Thanks to the 'Not Self but Service' attitude of our community $2,697.20 was given to the Red Cross for their work to help the people of Vanuatu recover after the devastating cyclone. $1,004.20 was raised as part of the sausage sizzle at the end of the Shore to Shore, with MRE providing the bread, sausages and sauce, not to mention the cooks, at no cost meaning all money could go to the appeal. The balance of the money was raised as the result of the mufti day.

1974 - Part 9 When comparing schooling today with that of 40 years ago it is important to recognise that schooling does not exist in a bubble, removed from society as a whole. Education very much reflects the times. Hence, it is important to contextualise the mid to late seventies when I experienced my first years of teaching. This was the decade of ‘carless’ days where the government of the day permitted the use of each car for only six days a week and the selling of petrol was limited to five and a half days a week, although the scheme only lasted a year or so. This was the time when we had only two television channels, with colour only being available since November 1973. At this time, New Zealand had a highly regulated economy and while my remit is not to discuss economic matters the regulation of the economy was very much part of the educational domain. Regulations manifested themselves in various ways. For example, schools had very little say over the appointment of their principals and teachers. In essence, I think that as New Zealanders at this time we were largely accustomed to being told what to do and what was good for us. Quite rightly, schools are far more accountable to their communities than was the case 40 years ago. Today schools are governed by boards of trustees elected by parents. These boards have very substantial authority including the responsibility to hire staff. Part of the management of staff includes, amongst other things, the regular appraisal of staff against established criteria. Teaching is now much more transparent than it once was with regular formal discussions amongst teachers that analyse their teaching in terms of student performance with the objective to improve outcomes for students. This is as it should be. Expectations of the performance of schools have increased markedly in the past four decades, just as they have across many walks of our society. In terms of physical resources in 1974 the facsimile machine was not in use (at least in schools), mobile phones were unheard of, the Internet didn’t become commercially popular until the 1990s, Skype was a science fiction dream and slide projectors and 16 mm black and white films were central to the audio visual resources of the school. Electric typewriters in the school office were thought of as being ‘cutting edge’, while photocopiers did not exist at all in schools. Rather schools had methylated spirit laden ‘Banda Machines’ and ink infused Gestetner machines for printing. My recollection was that I managed to get as much fluid and ink on me as I did on the paper. We live in a far more interconnected world where we all have access to so much more information. It is, literally, at our finger tips. We are, I think, in comparison to 40 years ago, less likely to take things at face value. Rather we are likely to question what doesn’t sound right or fit well with us. In terms of education, this means that classroom teachers (and schools in general) are subject to greater scrutiny than was previously the case. This simply means we are evolving along with everybody else, as it should be.

Tree Work The holiday break provided a window of opportunity for some work to be carried out on trees on the school property. A number of trees had limbs either trimmed or removed as the limbs were in such a condition they posed a risk to the safety of those who might have been in the vicinity. Some tree surgery work was also carried out where there was evidence of disease. With such a large site and with so many trees (thankfully on both counts) there is always a need to monitor the health of our trees.
