End of Year Concert The end of year concert will be held, weather permitting, on the field starting at 5.30 pm on Tuesday 16 December. The junior classes (Years 0 - 2) will perform at 5.30pm followed by Years 3 - 6 who will commence their performance at approximately 6.00pm. Kapa haka will also perform. The concert is expected to be completed by about 6.30 - 6.40 pm. The concert provides the opportunity for our community to get together to enjoy singing and dance performed by the children in a picnic atmosphere on the field. There is no cost and you are welcome to bring along food and refreshments. For those of you who are new to the school, this is a fairly informal occasion although the children work hard to perform well given the challenges of singing outdoors. Should the weather not permit the concert to take place on Tuesday evening the postponement date is Wednesday 17 December at 11.00am. This will allow those of you who are coming to collect your children from school at 12.30pm to enjoy the concert. Fingers crossed for a warm, still and windless evening on 16 December. Hopefully, we will get rid of the foul weather by then!

“Not Self, but Service”

Staffing Notice Bruce Reid Bruce will be leaving us at the end of this year as he is moving with his family to Tauranga. Bruce, who arrived at Campbells Bay in 1995, has made a major contribution to many aspects of life at CBS during the years. His leadership with water wise and NSW competitions are two domains that readily come to mind. As well as his work out of the classroom, Bruce has provided a nurturing classroom environment for so many children during his years at CBS and he will be missed. As I know Bruce is a private person, I asked him to describe what his ideal farewell from CBS would look like. Please bear in mind it is his ideal and not ours! Bruce has made it very clear he would like no fuss; no special assemblies; no farewell events; basically, not very much at all. Bruce has consented, albeit with some reluctance, to have a book for parents to write farewell comments in. Accordingly, there will be a book in the office foyer for this purpose and you are most welcome to come in an write a message to Bruce. There will, of course, be a farewell to Bruce from his colleagues, some of whom he has worked with since his arrival at our school. Bruce has stated quite clearly that he would be uncomfortable with any other form of recognition of his time at CBS and we must respect that, with reluctance. I know there will be many people who will take the opportunity to write messages in the thank you/farewell book to Bruce that will be in the office foyer from next Monday morning. Thank you for respecting his wishes for a very quiet farewell from CBS. Bruce, as a teacher at CBS in 1997. Hasn’t changed a bit!

Waterwise News The Year 5 students had a huge week at Waterwise last week. The organisation had to take account of double and triple bookings with the interschool athletics and APPA Music Festival, but we seemed to be able to get everyone involved over the two day programme. During the orientation, children experience how to manage a capsize in very controlled conditions. To make this as safe as possible, we had instructors in the water, and everyone wore life jackets. Congratulations to everyone who 'stepped outside their comfort zone' and experienced the fun of Waterwise for the first time. Children who were unable to swim 25metres will get letters shortly recommending swimming lessons over the holidays. Thanks to all our wonderful parent helpers over the two days, and to our fantastic Year 6 coaches Rhys Pattimore, Cooper Heath, James Houliston and Dalton Silbiger. Special thanks to our wonderful Waterwise instructors who had a huge day, and did a superb job for our students. This week Rooms 7 and 8 will visit the Waterwise centre and see Waterwise in action. Rooms 9,10 and 30 will follow next week. This will set the Year 5 students up for success right from the start of their Year 6 programme.

Waterwise Regatta 2014 The Campbells Bay School Waterwise team participated in the annual regatta last week, sailing and kayaking in races with Milford Primary, Takapuna Primary and Forrest Hill Primary. Miniball Finals week What an amazing end to the miniball year. Out of 10 teams playing across the NSEC and YMCA leagues we had seven playing in top 4 play-offs. Two of our Year 3 teams battled it out against each other for 1st and 2nd place. The Spurs got the edge over the Celtics, winning 8-5 in a very exciting and tense game. The Spurs won in a lower league at the end of Semester 1 so were moved up to the next league and have gone on to win that - a great achievement! Our Year 4 Rockets won their game 21-6 to gain 3rd place - a huge improvement on 7th place at the end of Semester 1. The Year 4 CBS Heat had to be happy with 2nd place after losing their final by 1 point 8-9 in a thrilling game. At the YMCA our only Year 5 team, the Shooters, put on a great display of skills as they punished their opponents with a 25-2 win, earning them the trophy for their league. Lastly, but not least Friday night saw two of our Year 6 teams playing. The Knicks had to settle for 4th place, but the Breakers (pictured on the right) fought hard all game to steal the win by one basket 18-16 to win the First Grade. Thank you to Norman who has coached all of these kids throughout the year and to all our amazing parents who have helped along the way coaching, managing, scoring, transporting and cheering. Well done! You are all stars! Enjoy your well earned rest! “Not Self, but Service”

Athletics 2014 Congratulations to our wonderful CBS athletes who competed at the Sovereign Stadium against our four local cluster schools last week. It was the perfect day, staying dry but with cloud cover to stop everyone getting sunburnt. Campbells Bay accumulated a total of 40 certificates for placing in the top 3 in the variety of events taking place. This put the school in second place behind Sunnynook who won the trophy for the first time. Well done to everyone! Thank you to our amazing CBS staff who helped run the event – Mr Padgett, Miss Leydon, Mrs Maunder, Mrs Richardson and Mrs Leadbetter. Also thanks goes to our reserves who helped on the day.
