On page 4 of the newsletter is a registration form for parents to fill out to get their children an Auckland City Library card. Please fill this form out and return to school by Friday 27 February. Children will then be issued a library card. If children already have a Auckland City library card they will be asked to bring this along to school on the 16 and 30 March. On 16 March and 30 March the Library Bus will be parked out in the bus bay. Children will be invited up with their new library card to take some very cool library books home to read. They will then return their books to any of the North Shore Libraries. Please return registration forms to class teachers ASAP. Thanks, Joe Lanning

Lock Down Trial (known as 'the Stay Plan') The trial will be held on Friday 27 February starting at 10.15 am. As I have mentioned before, lock downs are a reality of our times. Hence, we need to be prepared. From observation, lock downs are not quite as easy as they may seem. The expectations are that all students and adults will sit on the floor, silent and as out of sight as possible from somebody looking in. As the school was not designed to be Fort Knox we have a challenge to secure all points of access to our extensive campus. The point of a trial is to identify areas of weakness with the intention being to remedy any weaknesses. The trial is also designed to ensure everybody is aware what is expected of them. While teachers will, as usual, work as sensitively as possible with their classes, it is a very unusual situation for us all to be in, namely, staying as out of sight as possible and in silence for, perhaps, a lengthy period of time. In the case of the trial it is likely to be for about ten minutes while we check the site. Teachers will be talking to their classes about the trial before Friday. Please feel free to do the same. As we do not wish to cause any undue anxiety, discussions prior to the actual trial should help to allay any worries. Note: The trial fire evacuation last week went well but improvements can be made in the domain of all children being silent, so they can clearly hear instructions from staff. We will be having a further fire evacuation trial later in the term. This will be non notified to add to the authenticity of the trial.

1974 - Part 3 Literacy has been a central part of our education system well before that advent of John McGowan in the classroom as a novice teacher. We have been blessed for as long as I can recall by outstanding publications produced under the auspices of the Department of Education (until 1989) and thereafter by the Ministry of Education. The School Journals and the Ready to Read series have been cornerstone publications of our literacy programmes. New Zealand has had a proud history in the teaching of reading, notwithstanding the debates that occur from time to time over the various methodologies used to help children to read. Having said this, my enduring memory of teaching reading in my early years as a teacher in junior classes was the relative lack of assessment tools compared with those available today. In fact, my most vivid recollection was that we used a word identification test called ‘a BURT’. While today BURT is still used as one guide for what are known at ‘Six Year Net’ assessments – basically assessing how students are performing in literacy at that age, it is by no means that only form of assessment used. Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) were available to us from year four onwards. You may remember them. They are still used in some schools today with the difference being the results are now often subject to much greater analysis than was the case in my early years of teaching. It was quite common for the PAT result to be used to help place a student in a group as a ‘one-off’ with little reference to an analysis of what the information collected from the test meant for the needs of each student. Today e-asTTle (on-line learning and assessment tool) provides teachers and school leaders with information that can be used to inform learning programmes and to apply teaching practice that maximises individual student learning. A number of you might be thinking of ‘running records’ that are now an essential assessment tool that provide a very helpful diagnosis of what a student can do and cannot do, thereby helping the teacher determine the next teaching/learning actions. These running records did not come into being (from the very best of my recollections) until the early 1980s in association with Dame Marie Clay’s acclaimed Reading Recovery Programme that was rolled out across the country. Now, of course, we have any number of assessment tools that are available to use to assist us with the teaching of reading so, using the jargon, we can triangulate information to come to an informed assessment, bearing in mind that teacher judgement should always be based on the analysis of multiple sources of reliable and valid information. Although we have come a long way since 1974 in better assessing student needs in reading, arguably, we now face greater challenges. More on that next time. “Not Self, but Service”

Handyman Wanted Wanted—a handyman to build some garden boxes. We are expanding the garden capacity for our Plant to Taste programme for Yr 3/4 children at CBS. Miniball
Teams were sent out to managers at the end of last week and everyone registered should now know which team they are in. Please do not ask to change teams. A lot of time and effort has gone into putting teams together and decisions are dictated by the number of children wanting to play. Please remember to attend your weekly practice. Games start in week 5 for Years 3 and 4 and in week 6 for Years 5 and 6.
Cricket
The Primary school tournament is next week. If your child has been selected for a school team they should bring a notice home today. Teams will also be posted on the school Google site.
Flippaball
Session in the school pool tomorrow after school for any registered beginner players who would like to practise their skills. Please ensure your child is picked up by 4.00pm from the pool area. Pool key holders - please note the pool will not be available until 4.00pm tomorrow due to this session.
Netball
Netball will be available to boys and girls from Years 3—6. Details will be on the school google site by the end of this week. Please check the google site for further details.
Shore to Shore
See pages 5 and 6 for all details on Shore to Shore. An activity that the school has participated in for many years. A great event for all to have fun.
Weetbix Tryathlon
CBS is once again sending a school team to the North Shore Weetbix Kids Tryathlon on Sunday 22 March. All details are available on the official Weetbix Kids Tryathlon website. Registrations and payments are to be made online on the official website. You’ll be asked to select a school team to link to and will be given the option to select CBS. If you have already registered your child but didn’t link them to the school team, please email me on kerim@campbellsbay.school.nz with their name and I can do that for you. Registrations close as soon as the event is full, so remember to register as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. Auckland Libraries Membership With the school library out of action for this term, we are excited to be partnering with Auckland Libraries to give every student a library card. Your child/ children can become a member for free. An Auckland Libraries card can be used in 55 libraries across Auckland and provides free access to a wide range of books, eBooks and educational databases. Some libraries offer homework help classes, and all libraries hold events, activities and programmes for school aged children during school holidays. The North Shore Libraries Mobile Bus will be visiting Campbells Bay School on the 16 and 30 March 2015. The children will be able to browse and issue books using their Auckland City library cards. Data required to complete the registration will be forwarded from the school to Auckland Libraries. Please contact your local library if you would like to check whether your child is already a member of Auckland Libraries. Please fill out the attached form, and return it to the school by Friday 27 March. This year Campbells Bay School will be participating in the Shore to Shore Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 29 of March, at 9.00am. The Shore to Shore Fun Run/Walk is a 5km, fun event for all ages run by Harbour Sport for all schools in the North Shore and Rodney districts. All schools that enter the Shore to Shore Fun Run/Walk are eligible to apply for funding from the Shore to Shore Trust. The more participants we have in the event from our school will impact on the amount of funding we may receive. The are two entry fees, the $7 fee is for participation in the Fun Run/Walk and the $12 fee also includes a timer for the competitive runners or those who like to keep their time. Also bus tokens are available on registration $3 each. We will still be having a sausage sizzle, however due to new online registrations it will be pay when you arrive at the finish line. More details closer to the event. This year all entries are made online at www.shoretoshore.co.nz this includes entry and bus tokens. Please make sure you register with Campbells Bay School team to be included in our end result. See website and attached flyer for more information.
