2014 Term 4 13 October—17 December

2015 Term 1 3 February—2 April Term 2 20 April—3 July Term 3 20 July—25 September Term 4 12 October—18 December

“Fireworks and firework displays are not permitted on school sites. Letting off fireworks increases the risk of fire regardless of how professionally a display is managed. Fire damage can result in costly repairs and substantial disruption to the school and wider network.”

Pompeii II Little did we realise that our school site hosted quite so many pipes from another era! While excavating for the foundations of the new building many previously unknown pipes have been discovered. While these pipes have caused the need to make some minor changes to the foundation plans, it is, basically, business as usual and, in spite of the existence of the pipes and a very wet spell, the project is on time. The pipes may well have dated from the time when the school roll reached over 1,000 before the opening of Murrays Bay Intermediate School and Mairangi Bay. This was when the school went to year eight. In those days the whole southern boundary area of the school was crowded with prefabricated classrooms. The photo (above right) shows a concrete pump in action on Friday.

Board Seeks Property Adviser The Board is planning to undertake some significant property projects during the span of our strategic plan: 2014 - 2017. These projects include an extensive remodeling of the library/ICT area as well as an extension to the hall. We are seeking a parent of the school who is qualified and experienced in property matters to provide project advice, on a voluntary basis, to assist the Board to make the best possible decisions. Please note this is not a project management role but, rather, an advisory role to the Board. It is not anticipated the role would be onerous in terms of time. We are wishing to benefit from the knowledge of such an adviser in relation to the various property proposals the Board must work through. If you would like to discuss this role, please contact me via email in the first instance. Vicki Caisley - Chairperson Campbells Bay School Board of Trustees bot@campbellsbay.school.nz

Monday 17 to Friday 21 November is BOOK WEEK CBS Book Week will be starting Monday 17 November. Book Week will engage the children in a week long bonanza of activities around reading and our library. This year’s theme is ‘Out of This World’. We have eight award-winning New Zealand authors who will read to groups of children, including Brian Falkner and the 2014 NZ Post Award winning author Vasanti Unka. Children will also have the opportunity to attend creative writing workshops and poetry sessions. There will be fun events happening throughout the week ending in the grand finale with the Book Character Parade on Friday morning. Start planning the costumes now. A Book Fair will be held daily in the school library. We have partnered with Takapuna’s specialist children’s’ bookshop to offer the best selection of quality book titles and advice. The Book Fair will be open from 8.30am – 9.15am and 2.30pm – 3.15pm each day, with a late night 6.30 – 8.30pm on Wednesday. (Note: Our school library will directly benefit from the proceeds of the Book Fair.) Families are able to donate books to the school library if they wish. Children’s names will be recorded in the front of the books and children will be able to take them home and read them first. On Wednesday 19 November the morning is dedicated to grandparents. We look forward to seeing you all at book week and hope you enjoy the creativity it inspires.

A number of families missed out on ordering calendars, cards and diaries last term with our change to the Kindo online ordering system. This year ONLY we will be offering you a second chance to order these products. If your child was not at school from the 4 August you WILL NOT be able to order as they will not have completed any art work. If you are in any doubt ask their teacher or email jaynej@campbellsbay.school.nz BEFORE you order.

Calendars, Cards and Diaries Here is a great Christmas gift idea for friends and family. Your child’s artwork featured on a 2015 calendar, diary or pack of 8 blank cards. 

Calendars $12 are bound with wire and the artwork is laminated. They include the dates for the school terms and NZ public holidays.



Cards $12 are blank so they can be used for any occasion. Your child’s name is printed on the back of the card. All 8 high quality cards are printed with the same art design.



Diaries $15 have a hard cover and measure 148mmn by 210mm. View a week at a glance—each page displays the full week from Monday to Sunday. At the beginning of each month there is a monthly overview.

MKR Visits CBS Chef Aaron from MKR visited Rooms 33 and 34 and made jam and butter to demonstrate physical and chemical change as part of our inquiry. The children used their five senses to observe and communicate as scientists. Aaron brought with him other contestants from the MKR show and signed autographs for the many students.

Orders Orders can be made online using the Kindo system https://shop.tgcl.co.nz Orders need to be by Thursday 6 November. NO LATE ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED

Quiz and Auction Night 2014 Oh what a night! Well the quiz and the auction were lots of fun again this year. Well done to all the teams who came dressed to impress. A few stand outs on the night were the incredibly realistic made up Halloween team who won best dressed and the pink ladies and their t birds looked amazing. I believe some of those slick pants were from the wardrobe not the hire shop! The Melbourne cup table came dressed to impress and there was, as ever, a few Harry Potters, Mexicans and hula skirts around the room. An amazing team on the bar led by Jac and Chris Beasleigh kept everyone well lubricated. Don’t worry there were plenty of designated drivers throughout! The questions once again kept the teams thinking hard…desperation to Google throughout the room but holding back (mostly) thanks to Ann and Chris Davis once again for exercising our brains. Winners on the night were it’s ‘Lonely at the top’ with Board of Trustee members proving they are pretty switched on. A big thank you to everyone who donated to the gift baskets they looked amazing. The rooms winning the special mufti day were room 26 and room 9, closely followed by room 25 and room 10. Thanks to all of our community support. Parents got a well-deserved fun night out and the school raised a good amount of money towards those new fancy hand driers going into the toilets. We will update you with the final amount raised once a reconciliation is done! Thanks to everybody who supported the quiz night on Saturday. There was an amazing atmosphere in the hall and this was not an accident! Rather, it was the result of a great deal of planning and hard work. Members of Friends of Campbells Bay School did an amazing job to ensure the evening was a success for all those who attended. Of course, those who attended came to the party, literally, with some stunning outfits. We all left a little more knowledgeable than when we arrived and can confidently talk about the only country to host the summer Olympic Games without winning a gold medal as well as many other essential snippets of information.
