We are so very proud of each of you, the amazing things you have accomplished, your hard work, persistence and resilience, and to recognize you as CUSOM’s fifth class of osteopathic physicians! Most importantly, we are proud of who you are as caring, compassionate individuals with a genuine heart for serving others. As you celebrate your graduation, I hope you also take some time to reflect on your journey, what you have achieved, the lives you have touched, and how you have grown. I have a small collection of quotes I have kept over the years, and as I think about your class and your journey, one by Bernice Reagon comes to mind; it reads “Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.” And challenged you were. As students, you were at ground-zero of the SARS-CoV-2 global pandemic, the greatest public health disaster in over a hundred years. And yet, in the face of uncertainty as to the impact of the pandemic on your medical education, the safety of your family and friends, the stress of never-before-seen numbers of critically ill patients, shortage of PPE supplies, and concerns over your own health and safety, you all shined. You stepped up, overcame challenges, conquered fears, and you made such a difference in the lives of so many. And you grew in ways you never imagined and discovered strength and confidence you may not have recognized before. I have no doubt you all can face any challenge set before you!
We are so incredibly excited for each of you, for the amazing journey you have ahead, and for the special impact you are going to make on the health and well-being of your patients. Make sure to always carry with you a sense of gratitude, grace, patience, empathy, understanding and appreciation. One of the greatest gifts you can give others is your time and attention so when you are with patients, be present and truly listen to their stories and concerns. And always remember to have fun!! On behalf of all our staff and faculty, I want to thank you so much for the joy and special memories you have given us – you are a special class and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Remember that you will always be a member of the CUSOM family and that we will always be here for you! Please don’t forget to join the Alumni Association which will help provide an enduring connection to CUSOM and your fellow alumni and keep you abreast of exciting news, announcements, and alumni events. And remember, we would love for you to come back “home” after your residency! Once again, congratulations and best wishes!!

SGA PRESIDENT
ERIND MUCO Class of 2021 – What an honor it is to graduate alongside all of you. When I think back to July of 2017, sitting in Lecture Hall 201 for orientation, I never imagined that the strangers I was sitting next to would go on to become my lifelong friends. Medical school has been a tremendous privilege and challenge for all of us. Last-minute cramming for the quizzes every Friday, trying to survive neuro block, and even deciphering the brachial plexus in anatomy lab come to mind as some memorable challenges. Not to mention the climate change crisis in Lecture Hall 202. We have been through a lot and deserve to celebrate this monumental day with our loved ones. As we look forward to residency training, and beyond, I encourage you to be grateful for the opportunities we have in caring for patients, and to continue to nurture the drive and hunger for accomplishing great feats. I want to thank our fantastic professors, attendings, administrators, mentors, and school staff for their dedication to medical education. Without you, this would not be possible. Congratulations and thank you to the Class of 2021! Good luck with everything you hope to achieve! Erind Muco SGA President 12

CLASS PRESIDENT
DARA FAZELNIA Class of 2021 I imagine that when we all entered medical school 4 years ago, we anticipated the challenge. We were primed with analogies of firehoses because evidently the closest metaphor for a medical education is being blasted in the face with water. We certainly knew there would be difficult exams, 24-hour surgery call, and many opportunities for self-doubt, but even the most conspiratorial among us could not have predicted a global pandemic that would disrupt our training at the most critical point. Despite the unpredictability of virtual interviews and canceled away rotations we trailblazed onward into uncharted territory and will continue to do so for the rest of our careers. It seems there are two constant factors that have marked the past four years and may characterize the years ahead: that we are constantly faced with uncertainty, but that we have each other to help guide us through the fog. My friends and colleagues, I celebrate this day with you, proud of our individual accomplishments, while recognizing the strength we drew from each other along the way. As we look forward to our careers ahead of us, I encourage us all to look back on the people that helped us along the way. The classmates who laughed with us during latenight study sessions, the spouses/partners who listened to us vent after stressful days, the mentors who shared their wisdom with us. I hope during this graduation season that you are proud of the amazing journey you have taken. I wish you all the best as you continue your medical training. Despite the uncertainty that lies ahead, I hope you know that you have a cohort of classmates, colleagues and, friends beside you along the way. Dara Fazelnia Class President 14

H O N O RIN G T H E L I F E A N D L E GAC Y OF R A CHE L HE L E N S I LV E R The Rachel Helen Silver Scholarship was established to honor the life and legacy of Rachel Silver, a member of the Class of 2021, tragically lost in a car accident on July 2, 2018. The scholarship is awarded to a second-year osteopathic medical student at the end of his/her second year who has clearly demonstrated a willingness and a passion to give back to their academic community as well as their local, regional and even national/international communities. Recipients are nominated by their classmates in hopes that the selection process will encourage all students to do their best academically and to strive to be the very best person they can be in order to make this world a better place. Brittany Williams, Class of 2022, was selected in 2020 as the first recipient of the scholarship, and the Class of 2021chose to support the scholarship with their Class Gift. “Though I didn’t know Rachel, I am honored the committee saw my peer-written application as an embodiment of who Rachel was and the legacy she would have wanted to leave. I plan to continue to live my life in a way that, not only helps others, but also honors students Rachel Helen Silver (1992 - 2018) like Rachel who dedicated themselves to giving back to those around them,” Williams shared. “As future physicians, compassion is key. We all want to be able to make a difference in peoples’ lives, but that doesn’t mean we have to wait until we are physicians — we can do that each and every day with our family, friends and classmates because no one should ever have to go through difficult times alone.” 17

Be sure to open my emails, so I can take you to dinner!” We finally have permission to get back out on the road, so watch your email later this summer for alumni event invitations! I wish each of you the very best and look forward to following your careers. WORDS OF WISDOM If your program does not provide you with good coffee, make sure to get a costco membership and stock up on the good stuff. There will be days that are absolutely brutal, but that’s ok! Just look out for each other and never forget why you are putting yourself through this - for the patient. And when you have those inevitable lighter days, make sure to enjoy them by doing things that you like. Congrats Class of 2021! - Dr. Paul Pikman ‘18 Congratulations on your fantastic accomplishment! You have already overcome unforeseen obstacles to get to this point. I wish I could tell you that it gets easier from here on out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. But if you use the tools, knowledge, and skills you have developed in school, you will continue progressing through your career. Have confidence that because you got this far, you will turn future challenges into great achievements. Keep pushing yourselves to become not only better physicians, but better people, friends, sons/daughters/ brothers/sisters/parents. Try to enjoy this privilege you have earned. And during tougher times, remember the joy and relief you felt when you were first accepted to medical school. – Dr. Tom Soker ‘17 36

WELL WISHES To the Class of 2021: I wanted to give a hearty “Congratulations for a job well-done” to each and every one of you as you become doctors of osteopathic medicine! As have said to many of you before, going to medical school is tough enough, but doing so through this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic is truly extraordinary. You tackled a changed world of online learning, face masks, hand sanitizer, social distancing and virtual interviews to reach your goals and for that you should be very proud. You have been an amazing group of talented, dedicated students to work with. I wish you continued success as you enter your residencies and start your careers as practicing physicians. I know that wherever you go, you will bring great pride to CUSOM through your hard work, professionalism and humanity. Please also take of yourselves and keep in touch with your CUSOM family. All my best, Dr. Cappola
“Congratulations, Class of 2021!!! We are so incredibly proud of you and excited for your future. As you start your residency, remember this is your time to LEARN and GROW. Ask questions! Smart people ask questions and then...get smarter! Be confident in who you are. You are well-trained. You are accomplished. You are a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. You are a Campbell graduate. You are ready. And, YOU’VE TOTALLY GOT THIS!” Forever Your Cheerleader, Dr. Hinkelman Congratulations to the Class of 2021! May God abundantly bless you as you continue serving others by using the skills you have learned. Please know that I am still available if you have any point-of-care ultrasound questions. Happy Scanning! Dr. Cathy Daniels Director of Ultrasound Training “I know you have all heard it a million times...but you truly have trained in a very unparalleled and challenging time in history. You should be very proud of the success and resilience you have shown in the face of adversity and the global pandemic!
