GOING HIGHER TOGETHER

CAMP FIRE FIRST TEXAS 2021 ANNUAL REPORT

OUR NORTH STAR

In 2021, we engaged in thoughtful reflection about how to tell “one story” of all that we do at Camp Fire First Texas after over 100 years of service to our community. Throughout our history, we have continually responded to the needs of our five-county service jurisdiction by creating new programs, modifying existing ones or sunsetting those that no longer best serve the needs of children and youth or align with our mission. After engaging board members, staff, funders, community partners, and the youth, parents and educators we serve, we co-developed our mission, vision and values featured in this report.

To learn more about us, our footprint in the community and what differentiates our programs from others, please visit: CampFireFW.org/AboutUs.

The year also saw a reimagining of what was possible for our signature fundraiser, An Artist’s Christmas, by adding a keynote speaker, enabling us to implement the most successful event in its 36-year history! NFL Hall-of-Famer Emmitt Smith helped us welcome more than 400 guests by highlighting the importance of humility, perseverance and our common humanity in addressing the needs of our collective communities.

As we continue to navigate a post-pandemic world alongside our community partners, we will be prioritizing the areas of visibility, fundraising and impact across our organization. Please join us as we move into our bright future of ensuring all children and youth have what they need to succeed and thrive!

JAKE YARBROUGH Chairman of the Board

2021 was a year of reinventing and reintroducing Camp Fire programs and purpose to the community. While the pandemic continued throughout the year, this was a year to reemerge stronger with a united approach to go higher together –together with our organizational staff and volunteers, together with community partners, and together with families and youth.

DEFINING THE BRAND

Camp Fire First Texas leadership evaluated the “Who, Why and What” of organizational purpose and outcomes. This process clearly defined the organization’s north star which introduced a fresh, refined articulation of the mission, vision and values the organization has long put into action.

MISSION

Camp Fire First Texas invests in North Texas communities by providing out-of-school time and outdoor learning programs for children and youth while also offering workforce development programs for early childhood educators.

VISION

We envision a community in which every child has equitable access to the learning opportunities they need to succeed and thrive in a rapidly changing world.

RETURN OF IN-PERSON PROGRAMS AND QUALITY ASSESSMENTS

Camp Fire Programs returned cautiously, creatively, and safely.

Summer Day Camps in Parker County, Fort Worth, and at El Tesoro welcomed more than 3000 youth to immersive, in-person, comprehensive, and FUN summer day camps and out-of-school programs.

Thanks to the innovation demonstrated in 2020, more than 5000 Early Educators continued advancing their profession through new hybrid apprenticeship, mentoring, and online professional development options.

VALUES

INCLUSION

All are welcome at Camp Fire.

DATA-INFORMED

We collect and apply data to continually improve existing - and inspire new - programming.

GROWTH MINDSET

We believe the learning process is equally as important as the learning outcome and that talents can be improved over time.

COLLABORATION

We go higher together by partnering within the communities we serve.

HANDS-ON LEARNING

Learning from experience is a hallmark of all our programs.

WHOLE CHILD APPROACH

We recognize that social-emotional, physical, creative, and academic skills are all intertwined and equally important in learning.

Highlights and Celebrations

Camp Fire Early Education Conference went virtual with an immersive and interactive online conference that welcomed early childhood advocate and content creator, Rachel Giannini, as keynote. The two-day virtual conference kicked off with a screening of the documentary No Small Matter, which also features Giannini working in her classroom in 2015. The event also incorporated panel discussions to transform early education and traditional high-engagement learning tracks.

Lyn Lucas, Camp Fire SVP, was part of a historic day of testimony for a slate of bills centered on improving early education quality and access in Texas. She testified in support of HB619, which focuses on improving education and development of the teaching workforce with a primary pillar of the bill addressing the expansion of apprenticeships. The full testimony is available at CampFireFW.or/Blog

Camp Fire Teens in Action hosted a virtual Poetry Slam contest. Students took part in a two-day workshop on poetry and used the following weeks to work on their original pieces to present to a team of guest judges.

Camp Fire Early Education Apprenticeship program celebrated the first graduating class. The ceremony featured welcoming remarks from Julian Alvarez III, Commissioner Representing Labor, Texas Workforce Commission who recognized the important role of these trailblazing teachers. All of the apprentices from the inaugural class chose to continue their educational journey by attending college.

An Artists’ Christmas returned to an in-person event welcoming more than 470 attendees. The reimagined event featured emcee, Deborah Ferguson of NBC 5, who led guests through a high-energy evening punctuated by the first-ever event keynote delivered by Emmitt Smith, philanthropist, businessman, family man, Pro Football Hall of Famer, and three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys.

North Texans hopped on the bus during North Texas Giving Day by raising more the $30,000 to purchase a new bus ensuring Camp Fire youth have reliable transportation to access programs and countless learning experiences like college visits, career tours and community service opportunities.

Camp Fire First Texas was selected by Target as a fourth-quarter Giving Circle charity. As one of only 6 organizations, this opportunity shone a spotlight on the impact of the organization while yielding a donation in excess of $5000 thanks to the more than 15,000 votes received.

“Honor the Past and Envision the Future” community reception hosted friends and supporters of the organization who were finally able to recognize Ann Sheets for her 44 years of commitment. This event also recognized outstanding community members for their roles in supporting the advancement of Camp Fire’s mission.

Fall Camping Weekend returned in 2021 with a fresh format that, for the first time in over a decade, sold out the signature family and group camping event. What was new? A full cabin rental option and concierge activity schedule tailored for each cabin group.
