2022 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

At Camp Fire First Texas, we know that having a “growth mindset” is essential for exploring and discovering your spark. We believe the learning process is equally as important as the learning outcome and that talents can be improved over time. Camp Fire First Texas embraced this growth mindset in 2022, with notable successes in each of our programmatic focus areas and throughout the organization.

Our focus areas of Early Education Workforce Development, Youth Development, and Outdoor Connection experienced significant growth, along with the development of new initiatives that will enable us to reach and impact more youth for years to come.

Within Early Education Workforce Development, the Early Education Apprenticeship Program (EEAP) expanded, with 20 apprentices graduating in August 2022 and approximately 70 apprentices enrolled for the 2022-23 program year. EEAP enables devoted early childhood educators to embark on supported career pathway opportunities and potentially earn post-secondary degrees and marketable certifications that increase their likelihood of staying in a work field that desperately needs their passion and expertise.

In Youth Development, our Teens in Action program grew by approximately 100%, with 194 students served during the 2021-22 program year. Students were able to get the most out of their spring and summer breaks by visiting colleges and universities and exploring a wide range of career options. They also learned through S.T.E.A.M. experiments and further increased their knowledge of healthy relationships and social responsibility to thrive in today’s world.

In the Outdoor world, the Texas Outdoor Education Center at Camp El Tesoro provided 33 school groups and more than 2,600 participants with hands-on, outdoor science opportunities. This allowed students to learn more about nature and bond with their classmates and educators in a unique (and fun!) setting. Thanks to the generous investment of the Leo Potishman Foundation, Lake Leo quickly became a favorite of Camp El Tesoro visitors, with a new fishing dock and a lake stocked with fish that provided fond and lasting memories for many. With all of the great news surrounding our programs, you should also be proud to know that Camp Fire First Texas met its 2022 budgeted financial goals. Our signature fundraiser events, El Tesoro de la Vida Benefit Dinner and An Artists’ Christmas, enjoyed continued success in their 34th and 38th years, respectively. Additionally, high demand for afterschool, summer day, and overnight camps, as well as successful grants and major gifts efforts, contributed to the sustained financial health of Camp Fire.

Thank you for partnering with Camp Fire to empower those we are entrusted to serve and those that fulfill our mission each day to have a “growth mindset.” As we continue to make bold strides to build up our next generation of leaders, we will continue to honor the legacy of many that have made Camp Fire First Texas the reputable community staple it has been for 108 years.

ERMA LEE

Camp Fire Board Member, An Artists’ Christmas Event Chair 2022

Serving as event chair for An Artists’ Christmas in 2022 was the perfect intersection between getting more involved with an event I have been passionate about for many years, working closely with the staff members behind the scenes, and having an opportunity to invite friends to experience Camp Fire First Texas. When I think about Camp Fire it ignites the kind of vibrancy, I chose in the event theme and colors. This signature fundraising event is where I gained my spark for Camp Fire, so it was a good feeling to imagine the spark that newcomers had and know the excitement of those who were returning as artists, guests, or sponsors.

I have ten siblings and I did not experience programs like Camp Fire offers, but two of my sisters did and they shared what they learned. Engaging in Camp Fire is my way of giving back what I learned from my sisters, and the two primary colors I selected for An Artists’ Christmas were to honor them. I continue to support Camp Fire First Texas as a board member and general volunteer because I know the impact the programs it offers can have on young people to succeed.

CHRISTINE PEOPLES

Camp Fire Staff, Customer Support Manager

In 2022 I led the realignment of our Outdoor and Youth Development department registration processes into an integrated Customer Support Team. This new team is now responsible for registration and new enrollment support, financial account management, and reporting for Camp Fire’s ten afterschool program sites, Teens in Action school year and summer programs, as well as Camp El Tesoro day and overnight camps, grief camp, and family weekends.

In January Camp Fire leadership agreed to pilot a staffing alignment that brought the newly created Customer Support Team under the Marketing Department to improve the registration experience of the families we serve. Now any parent contacting Camp Fire to register their child in a program has multiple staff that can make that process simple and seamless. This change in the way we support our families has decreased the response time to emails and phone calls and simplified the registration systems resulting in happier participants.

I love that my work impacts the lives of children in our community by connecting them with Camp Fire programs that provide learning opportunities, develop a sense of belonging, and help them thrive.

STEVE, NICHOLAS, & ERICA CONNOLLY

El Tesoro de la Vida grief camp volunteers

We have 29 combined years of volunteering for Camp Fire El Tesoro de la Vida grief camp as a family. I (Erica) started volunteering for Camp Fire in 2009, my dad Steve signed up in 2012, and my brother joined us in 2016. We join our campers in their activities, participate in group therapy, eat meals, live with them in cabins, and try to create a fun and memorable camp experience for them.

I was recruited first by camp director Denis Cranford. I was hesitant and almost didn’t go – I was only 18 years old and had never been a camp kid or experienced the death of loved one. But I showed up, stuck it out for the full week and at the end of camp declared that I would never have a job that wouldn’t let me come to camp. And I haven’t missed a year since.

Camp teaches me about resilience, gives me comfort in my own grief journeys, and centers my perspective and outlook for another year. I love the opportunity to pour into kids who have been through more than any child should have to experience. Camp is a magical place and I’m so thankful to be a part of it.

Steve

The best conversations for me are usually when we are hiking and we just talk about life. Oftentimes this is when the children open up about how they really feel about the loss of their loved one and how they try to cope with it. It’s good for me to see that they feel comfortable in sharing their very personal stories about their loss while we are out in nature.

Nicholas

Volunteering with my sister and dad at camp is a special experience. Until someone experiences camp, there are just no words that can adequately explain the magic of it all. Each year I am so proud to watch my dad and sister’s impact on all the kids throughout the week.

Program Highlights

EARLY EDUCATION WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

The Early Childhood Workforce Development team provided professional development courses for early childhood educators:

• 134 TEACHERS in our Child Development Associate class to earn a CDA credential

• 443 DIRECTORS earning an Administrator’s credential, obtaining training in Administration topics, or renewing their Administrator’s credential

• 779 TEACHERS obtaining training to enhance/ improve their classroom environment

OUTDOOR

Camp Fire El Tesoro de la Vida Benefit Dinner enjoyed its highest grossing (and netting!) year in the event’s history. With this great outpouring of support, 85% of El Tesoro de la Vida grief camp campers were able to attend on scholarship.

Camp El Tesoro’s Lake Leo received exciting updates with the addition of a floating fishing dock, and it was stocked with bluegill and bass thanks to The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth. Additional camp improvements included increased signage, upper pool renovation, director cabin remodel, and permanent lighting was added to the swinging bridge.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Provided afterschool programming for 14 elementary school aged sites within IDEA Charter schools, Fort Worth ISD, Fort Worth ISD’s Fort Worth Afterschool program, and Aledo ISD. The school year program served 528 unduplicated students.

HORIZON FOUNDATION gave a $25,000 grant for students to explore the natural world at the Texas Outdoor Education Center at Camp

DUGAS FAMILY FOUNDATION supported Camp Fire’s general operations with a $40,000 unrestricted contribution. This gift provided great flexibility in being able to promptly address organizational needs.
