2016 Campaign Update
EVERY KID WITH CANCER NEEDS A PLACE AT CAMP.
FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER
YOU MADE IT POSSIBLE Thank you. Because of you, in just a few short months a newly expanded Ooch Muskoka welcomes Campers for a summer of fun – more room in a beautiful new Muskoka Lodge and dining hall for singing and friendship at mealtimes and more beds for more Campers sleepy from a day of challenges and excitement. Even more exciting is that not only will many more kids be coming to Camp, many of them will be experiencing the Magic of Ooch at overnight camp for the very first time. You made that possible by saying ‘No’ to ‘Can’t Go’ and ‘Yes’ to supporting our capital campaign so that more kids with and affected by childhood cancer have the chance to just be kids. Your investment in our capital campaign – the most ambitious in Ooch’s history – is making possible a much needed expansion; one that will give us the ability to serve 50 per cent more children. By 2021, Ooch Muskoka will welcome over 1,000 campers every year. Again, you have made that possible. The capital campaign goal is very much in sight – thanks to your generous support we’ve raised more than $31 million. In the coming months we’ll be sharing more details about the public phase of the campaign and all the exciting recognition and fund raising activities that are planned. Please enjoy the following report, designed to bring you up to date on campaign progress in 2016 and to provide highlights of the many positive impacts your donation is having. We hope you will take pride in knowing that your investment in Camp Oochigeas – an investment in kids with and affected by childhood cancer – will change lives today and tomorrow. More Ooch Muskoka, more kids experiencing the Magic of Ooch; more kids getting to just be kids. You made it all possible. With thanks,

A SPECIAL THANK YOU Thank you to Emmanuelle Gattuso We have a special friend in her! Emmanuelle Gattuso is one of Camp Ooch’s greatest friends and champions. Her commitment to Camp Ooch is unparalleled. Emmanuelle’s belief in and enthusiasm for our mission to help children brings other supporters into the Ooch family. And her remarkable generosity continually inspires others to give. Emmanuelle – along with the Slaight Family Foundation – has pledged the largest ever gift to Ooch in support of the capital campaign. Camp is about friendships, so it is no surprise that Emmanuelle was introduced to Ooch by a friend. On Emmanuelle’s first visit to Ooch Muskoka, her wonderful joie de vivre – that delights campers so much – had her dressed in costume by lunchtime, appearing as “Dr. Gattuso: discoverer of Pluto!” Subsequent visits to Ooch, and trips to the tickle trunk, have seen her entertain the kids as a judge from Chef’s Table, an Olympic hula hooper, and a visiting princess “from a land far away.” And when not having fun with the kids, you will find Emmanuelle leading tours of Camp, hosting events in her own home, as she tirelessly promotes Ooch to the world.
MP EMMANUELLE AT CA
We also want to extend special thanks to the Slaight Family Foundation and to Slaight Music, whose artists lead song writing workshops with campers, creating songs that have become a part of the Camp Songbook and are now embedded in our camp culture. The lasting legacy of Emmanuelle’s love of Camp Ooch will be the thousands of children who will experience the Magic of Camp Ooch for decades to come. As Emmanuelle says, “It’s about the kids.”

SLAIGHT MUS IC
AT CAMP
CAMPER STORY
“When you’ve faced worst the mons ters… that’s when you ne ed mu sic.”
Music plays a powerful role in creating what we call The Magic of Ooch as is felt with the enthusiastic singing that erupts anywhere Ooch Campers come together. Songs mark nearly every activity at Camp – we sing the “Siesta” song after lunch, and before bed we sing taps, “Camp is Nigh.” More formal (but equally fun) music programming includes creating songs, learning to sing and to play the ukulele. Among the musical highlights at Camp is the support given to Ooch by Slaight Music. Professional musicians from Slaight Music visit camp to lead song writing workshops, and delight the kids with a special concert, “Oochella,” at each session. The capital expansion at Ooch Muskoka will further boost music at Camp with the creation of a new Creative Arts & Music Centre. When the power of music and the Magic of Ooch come together, it has a special impact on our campers and families. Check out this note from the mom of a nine-year-old camper: may seem dramatic. But it is true. Music makes our son the captain of his own “ This ship - a ship of pain and sorrow, but a ship capable of navigating into happy peaceful waters. There are no words to reach him. There are no hugs or gentle caresses that soothe him, the way music can. He has learned to take the Magic of Camp Ooch with him everywhere he goes. He can re-ignite that magic wherever he is, whenever he needs it.
I have to say that when our son was diagnosed I felt all was lost. Really! The spark and joy that defined him, defines childhood, had been extinguished. Or so I thought. “Our son trusts Ooch , this safe place,
like no other place and takes the risks
necessary for grow th and development.”
The thing is, when you’ve been in the cancer world for seven years, and you’re only nine years old, well, there’s an awful lot that chemo and drugs, and doctors and nurses cannot fix. But music has kept him safe. Music has literally kept him here with us, and even better has given him a power over the demons. Music has breathed a life into him. It allows him to stare at the monsters and slowly one by one bring them all down to size. When he is sad, when he is angry, when he is frustrated, when he is lonely, when he is in pain, when he feels like giving up, when his pain is drowning him, music rescues him, soothes him, saves him.
