If you’re already dreaming of a white Christmas, why not inject a bit of colour with John Deere’s latest seasonal collection.

New for 2013 are a set of three soft toys – a reindeer, a cow and a penguin, each wearing a John Deere branded scarf and a Santa hat, and measuring around 10cm high – plus a 40cm high felt Christmas stocking. This is decorated with a festive print on one side and fitted with a long hanging loop to make it easy for Santa to fill. These join John Deere’s coveted advent calendar, featuring shiny machinery against a Jack Frost style background on the front and a selection of Christmas themed milk chocolate shapes inside. So make sure you have a merry little Christmas and order now, while stocks last, from participating John Deere dealers – look out for the special gift displays at local dealerships throughout the UK and Ireland, or order selected items online in due course at www.JohnDeere.co.uk Recommended UK retail list prices (including VAT) are: advent calendar £4.36; soft toys £4.99 each; and Christmas stocking £3.49. The equivalent euro prices for Irish customers (also including VAT) are advent calendar €5.13; soft toys €5.85 each; and Christmas stocking €4.11. 3

What is Legionella? • Legionella is a rod-shaped bacterium which belongs to the genus L.pneumophilia • Around 50 species of Legionella have been identified with L.pneumophilia responsible for approx 90% of cases • It is naturally occurring in soil and water environments • At low temperatures (under 20oC) the bacteria survive but do not multiply, over 60oC the bacteria die • The bacteria multiply rapidly in nutritious environments created by biofilm and sediment Legionella bacteria can only infect your body through inhalation of contaminated water droplets.

Legionella bacteria flourish under certain conditions: • Temperature between 20-50oC with optimum growth occurring at a temperature of 37oC • Little or no water movement as stagnant water provides an excellent breeding ground for the bacteria • Water systems which enhance the spread of bacteria through producing aerosols/ water vapour which can then be inhaled

High risk systems which produce water vapour/ aerosols include: • Showers taps and baths (especially spray taps) • Cooling towers • Air conditioning units • Hot tubs/ Jacuzzis Origins of Legionnaires' Disease Infection by Legionella bacteria causes Legionnaires’ Disease which is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and typically affects men more than women. It is not contagious but it can be fatal. The disease was first identified in 1976 after an outbreak at the convention of the American legion in Philadelphia where over 220 people were infected resulting in 34 deaths. Since then, numbers of cases have slowly risen with latest figures showing 200-250 reported cases of Legionnaires’ disease each year in the UK. The risk of contracting the disease from a contaminated water source is minimised by following the Approved Code of Practice by the HSE (ACoP L8).

Who is at risk? Everyone is susceptible to infection, but there are those who are at higher risk: • Those over 45 years of age • Smokers and heavy drinkers • The elderly and infirm • Those suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease • Those with impaired immune systems e.g. transplant patients

Fatality Rate Infection can be fatal in approximately 20% of reported cases. This rate can be higher in a more susceptible population. 4

A milder form of the disease known as Pontiac fever or Lochgoilhead fever can be contracted by those who have healthier immune systems. These symptoms are typically flu-like and are usually less severe. Your Legal Duties As a person who is responsible for water systems you have certain duties under Health and Safety law. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) and Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR) all cite the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice L8 as the recommended guidelines for the management of risk of exposure to Legionella. Your Legal Duties and Obligations Whenever water is stored or used in a way that may create a reasonable foreseeable risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria, there is a statutory responsibility which must be upheld. If you are... ...an employer or a person responsible for managed premises; for example a building with hot/cold water services or wet cooling systems... ...then you have certain duties to carry out under Health and Safety legislation.

The Five Principles ACoP L8 stipulates that the person responsible for your water systems must follow these five basic principles: • Identify and assess sources of risk • Prepare a written scheme for controlling the risk • Implement, manage and monitor precautions • Keep records of precautions • Appoint a person to be managerially responsible The control of legionella bacteria in water systems http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/l8.htm

The Legals The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) and Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR) state that there are guidelines which must be followed to protect employees and the public from the risks associated with Legionella. SPATEX is the hot ticket for 2014!

k, so Coventry in February is not everyone’s idea of a holiday but for those in the holiday parks business, it’s the only place to be! SPATEX 2014 at the Ricoh Arena is the pool and spa Industry’s one-stop shop Exhibition and a must-attend event for anyone involved in wet leisure.

O

Today’s holiday-maker is becoming more discerning and wet leisure is an important and often integral part of holiday park provision. By attending SPATEX 2014 you can find ways of satisfying, and potentially surpassing, your customers’ expectations, becoming more environmentally friendly and saving valuable time and money on running costs. A host of innovative new products; leading industry experts offering free, impartial advice and technical ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) Workshops, plus the best networking opportunities in the Industry – are just some of the ingredients that make the SPATEX Exhibition un-missable and why it is now entering its 18th year.

Shop window With over 100 Exhibitors displaying everything from wet and dry safety flooring, water play features, pool enclosures to energy saving chemical control and heating and ventilation units, SPATEX 2014 is the go-to Exhibition for anyone that is running and operating a holiday pool or facility. A vast proportion of the many innovative new products launched at SPATEX each year are geared towards commercial operators. There’s a well known saying in the Industry: “If it’s not at SPATEX, then you probably don’t need it” and this year perhaps more than ever, never has a truer word been said!

More than just an Exhibition Aside from being a great showcase, SPATEX is well known for attracting the Industry’s experts and its excellent ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) Workshops give the

Show an important technical and educational element which set it apart from other Exhibitions. Due to their popularity, we have increased the number of Workshop sessions to 25 over the three days of the Show, of which 20 feature brand new topics. These are diverse in content and range from the new electrical requirements for pools, spas and saunas to the different types of insurance a pool company should consider. All delegates attending the Workshops receive a Certificate of Attendance. The line-up of experts is impressive with a roll call of many of the Industry’s most distinguished names. Following her talk at SPATEX 2013 to a packed audience, the Head of the National Cryptosporidium Reference Unit in Swansea, Prof. Rachel Chalmers is returning for a second year to give a presentation on how to reduce the risks of Cryptosporidium. With outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis regularly linked to swimming pools, the prevention of the infection and detection of the contamination, which can potentially affect all swimming pools, is of major concern to all pool operators. What makes Cryptosporidium control problematical is that it is resistant to normal chlorine levels used for pool disinfection.

Another high profile speaker who is making a welcome return is health and training consultant Allen J Wilson FISPE, who is the author of the ISRM publication ‘The Survivors Guide to Plant Services’ and the ‘ISPAL Swimming Pool Plant Manual’. Much in demand, Allen’s latest book: Wilson’s Essential Pool & Spa Plant handbook has gone into its fourth edition. His training consultancy, Studies in Work cites numerous local authorities, national health and fitness clubs, hotels, holiday parks, schools, colleges and universities as its clients.

Leisure Operator’s Day Tuesday February 4th is Leisure Operators’ Day when the workshops will be aimed specifically at pool operators and managers and an absolute must-attend for anyone who owns or operates a holiday park with wet leisure facilities. Please note, however, that there will also be a number of sessions on the Sunday and Monday aimed at this sector too. The different aspects of water treatment, including testing and pool water management, is just one of the many topics that will be aired. For the full SPATEX/ISPE Workshop programme please visit www.spatex.co.uk

Added value 2014 sees a further increase in its impressive list of working partners and collaborations. For instance, last year an exclusive partnership was formed with the STA, one of the world’s largest swim teaching and lifesaving organisations, and they will once again be taking a stand. The STA delivers high quality training across four key business areas - Swimming Teaching, Lifesaving, First Aid and Leisure Management. Theo Millward, STA’s Operations Director said: “Following the successful launch of our pool plant qualifications at SPATEX 2013, STA’s Pool Plant experts will be at the 2014 show promoting the importance of training and how they have been proactively working with environmental health officers on a pilot project in Wales, which sees a new approach to auditing a pools operation and the possession of pool water qualifications; an approach that may shortly be rolled out across the UK.”

The place to network Rest assured business and

networking won’t end when the Exhibition closes. SPATEX has struck a number of deals with hotels both in an around the Ricoh Arena so why not make a night of it – please visit www.spatex.co.uk The Ricoh Arena offers some great networking facilities which SPATEX has capitalised on to organise some great social events. All visitors are warmly invited on Monday February 3rd to The SPATEX Casino Experience – a networking night to remember in the Ricoh’s GCasino (the largest and most luxurious in the UK). A bar, live entertainment, a la carte or buffet menus and, of course, all the fun of the casino will be at your disposal to make it a not-to-be missed social event.

unparalleled convenience and easy access. The train journey from Birmingham International airport to Coventry station takes 15 minutes with trains every 10 minutes and the Ricoh Arena is only 90 minutes away from Heathrow Airport. At the Ricoh you will find 2000 free on site car parking spaces.

Experience counts We have been running a successful show for 18 consecutive years, with all profit donated back to the industry. We know the industry inside and out and the industry knows us and, in these challenging economic times, that counts for everything. If you attend one Exhibition in 2014, make sure it is SPATEX!

wimming pools are expensive and valuable assets, it makes sense to enable them to be used earlier and later in the season or throughout the year.

S

The fact that the “Great British Summer” has failed to make an appearance for the last few years makes putting them under cover them even more important. A pool is undoubtedly the campsites major attraction and is even more so if the pool is enclosed. When it comes to booking one of the questions most often asked of campsites is whether or not they have a covered pool. For camping enthusiasts who are naturally more inclined to put up with the vagaries of the weather, it’s reassuring to choose an establishment with a covered pool. It means guaranteed swimming

whatever the weather. It’s even more important for families, for whom it’s essential to have activities to keep the children occupied. A pool enclosure is also a strong argument in favour of offseason holidays. For any holiday park or campsite, a covered pool is a major source of attracting new customers and encouraging them to return in future years. With an enclosure an average 20% + increase in the occupancy rate was recorded by a French campsite survey. Lower financial investment less than 20% of a brick and mortar building Very importantly a pool building will- Take control of the weather – wind, rain and cold. - Ensure no cancellations due to bad weather. - Guarantee your daily timetable. - Provide safety. Access to the pool is controlled. It is inaccessible outside of opening and supervision times. - Reduce costs of heating, Even on dull days solar gain through the roof will provide free heat to the interior. - Reduce costs of cleaning, chemical usage and general maintenance

Although Arch enclosures supplies enclosures from 5m wide we are known for our larger enclosures up to 25m wide

(16ft – 82ft) and any length. To accommodate these larger widths we have five different structural arch designs. A great feature of an Arch enclosure is the special side panel between the arches which are sliding windows. These windows give you three opening and ventilation options; fully open 2m x 2m, half open 2m x 1m or a ventilation slot (in the middle) of 10cm x 2m wide. The windows are made up in two sections. This allows the top half to be opened separately to assist ventilation whilst keeping the lower half in situ to ensure small children and pets are kept away from the water. When both sections of the side panels are opened up, they slide open to a height of 2 meters, allowing easy access to the surrounding areas. The factory 10 year guarantee underpins its reliability and resistance to external constraints (wind, snow...). www.archenclosures.co.uk estellemichaels@gmail.com 01444 411 411

What is the link between sales, performance and information technology?

Séverine Obertelli, Head of Sales and Marketing for Maxxton UK explains how choosing the right software for your organization can be the more substantial improvement. I: Lets talk about Maxxton…. S: Maxxton has been in the holiday parks industry for 18 years and is now the leader in the Benelux area. Our CEO started Maxxton as consultants for holiday parks because of the extensive sector knowledge. Our customer base varies from single small-sized holiday parks to large international holiday park chains. Our system; Newyse ERP, is very stable and deals with hundreds of bookings per day serving customers with up to 600.000 bookings per year. We have just opened our new office in Birmingham and are very excited about what we can offer the UK holiday parks market. I: So, what are the main challenges of holiday parks organizations in the UK? S: The utility costs increase has obliged parks and campsites to find cost efficiencies and constant improvements on-site. Also, the UK holiday market is even more seasonal than Europe and depends not only on the main school holiday periods but also on the famously known British weather. We notice that, especially outside school holidays, the capacity is not being used fully due to incapable systems. As it is now, a large number of holiday parks are highly dependent on OTA’s (online tour operators) to fill their parks which brings along massive costs. When we talk about digital media,it is also hard to keep up and take advantage of the digital and social media opportunities to directly engage with customers, missing important direct sales. Campsites still rely heavily on call centres as online booking facilities are limited and systems are often not able to deal with guest preferences and specific requests.

I: What exactly do you think is the solution? Why is technology so key? s: I think a fully integrated solution, flexible and with low investment, is the solution. It needs to provide e-commerce and your supplier needs to work with you like a real partner, as Maxxton does. Newyse ERP, our solution, is used on a pay per performance basis, has integrated e-commerce and real-time booking. You can book a single unit, based on specific requirements, unique pictures, all in one database, online and offline. This makes efficiency and customer friendliness go hand in hand. You can keep ahead of your competition and meet your ever changing customers’ expectations.

I: Many suppliers out there claim to have the best technology… What differentiates you from the others? S: I would say, ask our customers! We offer a true new technology concept which is implemented since 18 years and has proven to be very successful for our customers. We work as a true IT partner for our customers. Since we started working, we did not have one single customer leaving us. With Newyse, we are able to offer our customers a solution that keeps them ahead of the crowd. Thus we are very confident about our software. Please get in touch for a trial of Newyse ERP and you will notice the difference.. If you are interested, please contact our UK office on 0121 222 5125 or email europe@maxxton.com 11

‘FAMILY FUN’ is here to stay… and BATTERY RIDES are leading the way! he ever increasing numbers of leading leisure operators installing indoor battery rides tracks from World of Rides, has confirmed their absolute belief that the despite the continuing financial recession… ‘Family Fun’ is here to stay!

T

‘Families who play together…stay together’ was more than proven by the large number of owners and operators of Holiday Parks who moved their pollution-free World of Rides battery rides indoors during all the wet weather of 2012, and the early part of 2013, and as a result they were rewarded with continued high earnings throughout! These were the same owners and operators who had also bought their battery rides to put ‘All The Fun of The Fair’ back into their businesses, in order to keep their holiday makers and visitors returning for more again and again… despite the very inclement UK weather!

WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND... AGAIN AND AGAIN...

World of Rides coin-operated and pollution-free ‘Parent & Child’ range of junior and adult battery rides are now established as the most popular and profitable choice that have re-filled the void of needing more family attractions, that can be played together, due to their constant high earnings… and the fastest return on investment in the entire pay-toplay children’s ride sector… although they can also be run on Free-Play for parties and promotions at the flick of a switch! ...our business is child’s play!

FLUENT IN FAMILY FUN SINCE 1969

New models, including the upgraded Formula One racing teams, and MOTO GP trikes, Off-Road Jeeps and the larger sized Quad Bikes, as well as their exciting Soft-Impact Bumper Cars and Bumper Boats have already emerged as top earners for 2013… with forward placed orders already outstripping those of last year! With both of this year’s FORMULA ONE and MOTO GP racing seasons now in full swing, and with all-major TV

channel’s coverage of both racing series, this has ensured that millions of younger children and their families continue to follow their favorite young drivers and riders on a daily basis… with the kind of total adoration normally reserved for leading film and music stars! In addition, the larger capacity drybatteries now last throughout a full working day, instead of needing to be changed every four hours… and they can also be safely recharged in-situ overnight without them ever needing to be removed from the rides… using their plug-in fully automatic battery chargers supplied with every ride! The new slot together portable track barriers means that a 6m x 12m track can installed either indoors or outdoors in under four hours! Battery rides always enjoy constant multi-use by children and their families, so their income levels are never dependant upon footfall alone, and neither are they weather dependant, as they can also be safely operated either indoors or outdoors… on any hard level surface, in order to keep visitors returning again and again for more! All their new rides can be seen in action on their website… www.worldofrides.com … or at the EAG Internationl 2014 at Excel London Stand Number 135. 13

EAG International 2014 21-23rd

Could these dates be a game-changer for your b

oliday parks operators will need no reminding that there are many facets to their businesses. In addition to the basics of property and facilities management, the modern operator will have to contend with, to mention but a few, attractions and entertainment, amusements, F&B and retail. To stay ahead of the market we all need to keep ourselves informed of the products and services available to us; no easy task!

H

Some of us may visit one or two exhibitions a year, be they national or local but in truth, we are time-poor and need to be sure about the relevance of any show before investing time and money in attending. This year the Holiday Parks Management team took a stand at EAG International, taking place at London’s ExCel, with a view to meeting visitors and seeking out innovations and new products for our sector. The show is aimed at coin-op, amusements and the smaller end of the visitor attractions market and is now in its fifth year, building upon the 70 year tradition of an amusements show held in London during the third week of January. In common with the industry in general, the show’s base is broadening as operators strive to add more value to their facilities, catering to the ever-increasing expectations of visitors.

What is different about EAG International? The first think most visitors say about EAG International is that it’s a very friendly show which has a different feel from many of the expos backed by huge media corporations. EAG International attracts around 5,400 visitors, so it’s not small, and counts both global and local players amongst its exhibitors.

The real difference is that EAG International is put on for the amusements and attractions industry by the amusements and attractions industry, with visitors and exhibitors able to influence the show’s management and directions –there are no remote shareholders to please. EAG International is owned by trade association BACTA, the voice of the British Amusement Industry. Representing all Divisions from large manufacturers through to small seaside arcades, BACTA is focused on improving the image of the industry, encouraging good practice, and creating an optimal trading environment. In 2012, the show’s base was widened considerably when it attracted the support of BALPPA (British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions). BALPPA is a non-profitmaking Trade Association representing the interests of owners, managers, suppliers and developers in the commercial leisure parks, piers, zoos and static attractions sector. A visitor to the show will quickly see the influence of this wider leisure community, both in the products shown by exhibitors and in the seminars and events surrounding the show.

What you will see EAG International features products from over 180 represented manufacturers. Because several of the larger stands are occupied by Distributors, it’s possible to see and compare the latest games and products from several manufacturers, side by side, in the same place.

Coin-Op EAG International will feature products for the most discriminating arcade and venue operator. From the simplest gumball machine, right through to sophisticated sit-in video games, laser attractions and motion capture experiences, there are products for every venue, age group and budget. Large established manufacturers will feature alongside newer entrants with equally innovative products. Expect to see the latest in kiddie rides, cranes, pushers, video games, juke boxes and the latest AWPs incorporating the newly introduced stakes and prizes. 14

d January –

business?

With EAG International being the centre of the UK coin-op industry for three days, visiting operators needing advice or assistance will have a wealth of knowledge available to them, be it from manufacturers, distributors or other industry experts. Also on display will be coin handling technology and management systems, as well as parts and support services to satisfy even the most demanding operator.

Redemption EAG international will feature the very latest in redemption technology, along with a vast range of plush and other prizes, both licensed and unlicensed, from the industry’s leading producers. You can be sure that the very latest ranges in this trend conscious sector will all be there.

Outdoor and indoor active play For holiday parks diversifying into adventure, high energy and active play, EAG International is the place to find climbing walls, high ropes courses and zip lines, along with the health and safety advice and expertise forming such an essential part of these attractions. With the UK’s climate, indoor activities are incredibly important, so whether you’re researching pool tables, air hockey, go carts or mini cars, the country’s premier suppliers will be on hand to discuss product ranges and financial operating models.

visitors.

Meet the experts EAG International will be running free master classes throughout the show on topical issues such as the Triennial Review. Those seeking professional advice will also find industry specialists in insurance and asset finance amongst the exhibitors, plus the BACTA and BALPPA teams will be on hand to give guidance and direct operators to the appropriate resource, be it for training, health and safety, lobbying or legal advice.

Getting to ExCel EAG International takes place at the award-winning ExCel London, situated in London’s docklands. At first sight, the sheer size of the venue may be daunting but it’s well laid out and boasts fantastic facilities including restaurants, bars, fast food facilities and on-site hotels. For those travelling by road, ExCel is close to London’s M25 orbital motorway. The venue has plenty of parking at a reasonable price and within yards of the exhibition floor. Excel is outside the Congestion Charging Zone.

Those intending to travel by rail will be well catered for. Excel is served by three stations on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) which, in turn, connects to the Jubilee Line on the London Underground.

Registering for EAG International Free registration for EAG International is available at the show’s website www.eagexpo.com The website has details of exhibiting companies and is regularly updated with details of events at and around the show. For those considering an overnight stay or perhaps extending their stay to enjoy all that London has to offer, the show’s hotel partner Event Express may also be contacted via EAG International’s website.

Any Questions? EAG International is a very personal and friendly show with a high level of personal service. If you’re considering visiting and have any queries, feel free to contact Organiser Karen Cooke on 01582 767254.

Too numerous to mention As EAG international has grown, so has the number of exhibitors from other fields that are targeting our industry with customised products and services. At EAG international it’s possible to find everything from wristbands to stunning bespoke carpets and tailored music rental packages; the choice is almost endless. Everything, in fact, to make the difference between a good and a great experience for holiday park 15

Park News Stonehenge camping park scoops top green accolade

tonehenge Campsite, where summer solstice festivals and pagan weddings are among the attractions, is one of Southern England's greenest places to stay says botanist David Bellamy.

S

The camping park, which also provides "glamping pods", has scooped a top gold accolade in the David Bellamy Conservation Awards to add to its ever-growing list of honours.

Professor Bellamy also praised the campsite's near self-sufficiency in non-polluting energy, thanks to a discreet bank of high-efficiency PV solar panels installed in a nearby field.

Stonehenge Campsite encourages guests to join its recycling efforts, and shielded illumination on the park reduces light pollution and allows visitors to enjoy the spectacular night skies. It is open all year, and in summer provides up to 35 pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes. There are also two luxurious "glamping pods" to hire which are proving extremely popular.

The award, said Professor Bellamy, was very well deserved thanks to the "fantastic achievements" of business owner William Grant whose family has farmed in Wiltshire for over a century.

Stonehenge Campsite, said William, attracts guests from all over the world, especially during the annual summer solstice festival in June.

A raft of different conservation initiatives, he commented, is making the park as welcoming to wildlife as it is to those coming to view the world-famous stones.

Two pagan weddings have already been held on the park, and others booked and planned.

Located in Berwick St James, two miles west of the new £28 million Stonehenge visitor centre, the park opened five years ago on part of a nine-acre smallholding of naturally screened pastureland. From the outset, William (53) - who is the third generation of his family to farm in Wiltshire - was determined to run the campsite in an eco-friendly and sustainable way. A recent report by assessors from David Bellamy's Conservation Foundation, which administers the award scheme, said the park was a haven for many different types of fauna and flora. More than 5000 indigenous hedges, trees and shrubs have been planted, it said, and provide invaluable habitats and breeding and feeding resources for birds and other wildlife. Bird boxes around the grounds also attract a wide range of species, and high nectar-bearing flowers draw both common and lessfamiliar butterflies to their blooms.

"We were really amazed to achieve the top gold-level award from David Bellamy after only three years, and it's great to know he is fully supporting our work," said William. "For over a hundred years my family has farmed this area through three generations, and it is a very special part of England both to us and to many other people. "I believe it's right that nature should be fully respected and not compromised by man's presence. "I hope we are showing that tourism enterprises such as ours can work in harmony with the natural world whilst bringing significant economic benefits to rural regions," added William. Park Holidays UK acquired by Caledonia Investments Plc aledonia Investments Plc has acquired a majority stake in Park Holidays UK which owns and operates 21 freehold and two leasehold holiday parks in the South of England.

C

The transaction values Park Holidays UK at £172 million, and the company will now benefit from a £10m acquisition and capital expenditure fund which has been put in place to assist future expansion. Park Holidays UK has been run by its current management team since 2006 when the business was acquired from its founders through a management buy-in backed by private equity firm Graphite Capital. Since then, Park Holidays UK has grown to become Britain's fourth largest operator of caravan holiday parks. The change of ownership will allow Park Holidays UK to strengthen the business through internal investment, and grow its portfolio of parks through careful acquisition within the UK. 16

The company's current portfolio comprises a mix of high quality holiday parks, each with its own unique character and identity. This variety will ensure that Park Holidays UK is not restricted by the style or size of targeted park businesses in its acquisition planning. Jeff Sills, Chief Executive Officer of Park Holidays UK, commented: "Caledonia is acquiring a leading participant in the UK holiday market with excellent growth prospects. Caledonia's forward-looking investment model will ensure that we can continue to enhance and expand our park portfolio, and I look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with them. I would also like to thank Graphite Capital which has provided Park Holidays UK with the support and encouragement which has enabled us to develop the business to where it is today." Commenting on the acquisition, Duncan Johnson, Caledonia’s Head of Unquoted Investments, said: "We are delighted to be supporting Jeff Sills and his team in the next stage of Park Holidays UK’s development. The new capital structure will ensure that Park Holidays UK can continue to enhance its existing parks throughout the South of England, and allow Jeff and his team to build the business through targeted acquisitions."

Park Improvements How To get New Business Online - Website Marketing Basics veryone has a website these days: But how many of them really work and produce income and results?

E

It’s all too easy to have a website built and then expect to get new business. But there is so much competition out there how do you get your website seen? Then once people visit it how do you attract them s clients? The website itself is just part of this puzzle. There are a few basic steps that lead to a new client: 1. People who are interested in what you offer visit your website (targeted traffic) 2. Your website is simple to use and navigate 3. You capture peoples information whilst they are at your website 4. You follow up with quality messages 5. You offer them great service and they spread the word

Targeted Traffic Website traffic is easy. I can get thousands of visitors to any website with ease. However getting targeted traffic is harder. It takes time and effort. And targeted traffic is the key to success. A website is like a shop window. If you had a shop in your local high street for your business would it work? Chances are no. There may be thousands of people passing by but how many are interested in what you offer – at that time? Your website needs to be visible to people at the exact moment when they are looking for an offer like yours. So if you sell holiday lodges in North Wales you need people to find you when they are looking for a holiday lodge in Wales. This means you need to be on the front page of the search results when people put in the relevant terms. But not everyone can be on the front page – there are only 10 spots. Luckily there are other ways to get hot leads. These involve social media, PR, articles, blogs and other forms of inbound marketing. You may have noticed, as many of our clients have, a fall off in the returns from print advertising. It’s been in decline for years. I remember when I could put an advert in the Mail on Sunday or the News of the World and the phone would ring all day and Monday. Happy days; but they are no more. 80% of people research purchases online before actually buying. So if you place an advert in the paper people may like the idea: They will visit your website or make an enquiry: But they will also research online your competition. So you need to have a strong

presence and reputation online to still stand a chance at this new business. At the end of the day a combined approach is what is needed.

Data Capture Once you get people to your website you need to capture their data. Simple data catchment forms can have a huge effect. Most people will only visit your website once. So while they are there get their email and name. Then you can send them emails and engage with them. In this way you build your reputation and give people reasons to make their purchase from you and not your competition. Social media now offers your brand the chance to engage with prospects and customers. You can offer them great service and value. And in this way you will be the natural choice when it comes time for their next booking or purchase.

Constant Marketing Leads to Success Marketing now must be a constant stream of actions and engagement. In this way your business will be the first choice when it comes time to book. Best of all social media allows your audience to recommend you to their network, thus your offer spreads organically. Personal recommendation is more powerful now than ever before. Reputation is key to this and businesses need to have a plan to manage this online. CR4L charges on results: If we don’t get you new business you don’t pay. The use of widely different standards and specifications when installing Adult Outdoor Fitness Equipment is causing confusion in the marketplace, according to the Association of Play Industries While some clients and suppliers are using the German (DIN 79000) or French national standards (XP S 52-904), others are using the UK BS EN1176 Playground Equipment standard which relates only to children’s play equipment or the BS EN957 Stationary Training Equipment standard which applies to indoor gym equipment. Meanwhile, the PAS888 Publicly accessible outdoor exercise equipment specification was published in May 2013, which is not a national standard and has been commercially sponsored. Adult Outdoor Fitness Equipment is designed to provide a free access facility offering the benefits of Cardio Vascular and repetitive exercise patterns. It offers many advantages to local communities, helps promote healthy living and provides a gateway for wider fitness activities. The equipment is intended for people aged 14+ with an overall height of 1.4m and over and is not designed, intentioned or proportioned for children. Work is underway to develop a new European standard for general safety requirements for the manufacture, installation, inspection and maintenance of permanently installed, freely accessible outdoor fitness equipment. It is hoped that the new standard (EN 16630) will be published in 2014 and will address any remaining confusion. Until EN16630 is available, the API advises those planning to install Outdoor Adult Gym Equipment to use the existing German or French national standards. The German and French national standards clearly distinguish Outdoor Fitness Equipment from Children’s Play Equipment, provide a clear route towards both compliance with a recognised safety standard and the forthcoming European Standard, are already used by the RPII for inspection purposes and allow greater alignment with the new European standard once published. They also provide clear distinction in scope on recommended adult age and height range and address health and user hazards.

When positioning Adult Outdoor Fitness Equipment, the API advises specifiers and suppliers to undertake a rigorous Risk: Benefit assessment as some items pose a higher risk than others, for instance, those with moving parts. It then recommends the completion of assessments of the proximity of unsupervised children’s play equipment, the age range suitability of other facilities or equipment close by, the suitability of the surface onto which the products will be installed and the need for screening or other separation to reduce inducement to children. Finally, it advises that equipment is clear and permanently marked as not suitable for children’s play and with instructions for use. API Chair Michael Hoenigmann says: “Adult Outdoor Fitness Equipment provides clear health and well-being benefits to users and is a growing trend in public leisure spaces where local authorities are looking to encourage participation in active outdoor physical activity. There has until now been some uncertainty around standards but the API’s new guidance provides much-needed clarity. We look forward to the introduction of EN 16630, the new European standard, as soon as possible.” Download the new API guidance leaflet on installing Adult Outdoor Fitness Equipment For further information about the Association of Play Industries, its members and how the API can help plan a play project. contact: Deborah Holt, API Association Manager Tel: 024 7641 4999 email api@api-play.org http://www.api-play.org 19

Park Improvements The Ultimate Solar Case Study

A true story of how one business owner dropped his yearly electricity bill from £22,284 to £4203 A precis of a report issued by Rob Williams of Trawsdir Park Barmouth to Adam Beckett of Leisure Park Energy.

Why choose to install renewable energy technology? Looking back 10 years at what we were paying for our utility costs - to what they are today shows a large percentage increase to us all. Looking forward 10 years in the future, there is no reason to see this changing. In terms of costs, the system was roughly £66,000. We were fortunate that at the time in 2011/2012 we could claim 100% Capital Allowance which has now fallen to 20%. I do believe that this has now changed, but in my opinion, even though the feed in tariff has dropped from 39.5p to 21p, I would do it again, bearing in mind the cost of the panels have come down too.

Annual costs Before installing the system in late October 2011, we were paying £1857 per month to Scottish Power. We reviewed these figures with Scottish Power in August and agreed on a figure of £1005. So the immediate saving was £852 per month.

Summary

These figures go to prove that the solar PV is definitely working for us. In addition to this, we also made a conscious effort of changing all the light bulbs for low energy LED's where possible, and looking at all our electrical equipment to run as efficiently as they could. Also, all our Seasonal Tourers were fitted with meters and the savings here are plain to see. (People did not leave Halogen Heaters on in awning when they went out as they now pay for their own electric)

Funding/Investment We did not receive any funding, or indeed find any suitable sources. Predicted return on investment on the figures above is approximately 4 years.

Solutions Whilst funding is a hurdle, Leisure Park Energy is making every measure available to access alternative energy. For more information contact Adam Beckett on 08000836698 or visit http://leisureparkenergy.com

The initial estimate we received from Arizon Energy for the system was 18,000kwh per year. As from the 1st January 2012 - 6th December 2012, we have produced 19,400kwh, and this is in what may be one of the worst years weather wise. This equates in money terms to £7566 in feed in tariff. On top of this, 50% of this figure which is 9700 X 3% has an extra £291 in export tariff. The annual saving from Scottish Power is £10224, adding to that the feed in tariff of £7566, and export tariff of £291 equates to a total difference of £18,081. 2011 Scottish Power bills £22,284 - 2012 Scottish Power bills £12,060. Our actual annual cost now is £4203. All our renewable heat incentive payments and feed in tariffs are all index linked so these figures will change for the better each year.

Tees Valley couple named as role models for green tourism

Birds, including kingfishers, are also drawn to the park's two private fishing lakes which also act as a magnet for a wide variety of aquatic species including fresh water mussels and dragonflies. The park's woodland areas and ancient hedges - plus a conservation buffer zone around the grounds additionally provide a vast range of habitats for animals such as deer and badgers.

couple who have just scooped a top environmental accolade for their Tees Valley holiday park in NE England are "green tourism role models" according to botanist David Bellamy.

A

Husband-and-wife team Chris and Helen Brown of Drovers Way Holiday Caravan Park in the village of Elton have achieved the prestigious David Bellamy Conservation at its top gold level. The ten-acre park is one which Professor Bellamy has watched closely after accepting an invitation to declare it officially open three years ago. Based on a farm which has been in Chris Brown's family since 1952, the couple declared from the outset their intentions to run the business on sustainable lines. It brought them the David Bellamy award in the first and second year, and now they have achieved a hat trick by securing the honour for the third year in succession. The accolade is presented to businesses making exceptional efforts to protect and enhance the natural world, and is based on an audit by Professor Bellamy's Conservation Foundation. The report found that a raft of initiatives by Chris and Helen was ensuring that wildlife in the grounds were being made just as welcome as human guests.

Guests can enjoy spotting wildlife from a willow-dome bird hide, and there is also a nature trail with interpretation boards to help identify both animals and plants. Flora includes the park's proliferation of wild flowers with high pollen-bearing blooms which attract a wide range of butterflies, including both common and less familiar types. The park will eventually provide almost 70 luxury holiday homes for private owners, and has already attracted buyers from the north and south of Britain, as well as overseas. Helen Brown said that she and Chris were delighted to have been considered worthy of the top gold David Bellamy award for three years in succession: "The family farm on which we are based has always been managed with careful consideration given to the natural environment, and our park is an extension of these practices," she said. "I hope the award will go some way to benefiting other local tourism providers by throwing the national spotlight on the what a wonderful place Tees Valley is for a holiday," added Helen.

More information about the park is available at www.droversway.com

The rich bird life at Drovers Way is supported by the siting of many bird boxes and the planting of hundreds of indigenous trees and shrubs which provide nesting habitats and food resources. Recently, the British Trust for Ornithology began a bird ringing project at the park which will help track the movements of species such as swallows, woodpeckers and owls. 23

New utility tractors from John Deere

ohn Deere’s new 4M and 5E Series line-up of smaller utility tractors from 49 to 95hp is aimed at a wide range of professional customers, including greenkeepers and groundsmen, local authorities, landscapers and contractors.

and 5095E 95hp tractors feature Stage III B diesel-only PowerTechE 4.5-litre engines. The existing 5E Series threecylinder models from 55 to 75hp continue to be powered by Stage III A engines.

The newly designed 4M Series consists of the 49hp 4049M and 66hp 4066M models, which have been designed to combine high levels of comfort with low operating costs. They are versatile mid-specification tractors for applications where a narrow, low-profile compact tractor is needed.

Equipped with a spacious cab or easy-to-access open operator station, the three-cylinder 5E tractors are now also available with a 12x12-speed power reverser in addition to the existing 9x3 synchronised transmission. The 12 speeds between 1.2 and 24mph (2 and 38kph) offer a wider selection of gears for each application and can reduce fuel consumption while driving at lower engine revs on the road.

J

Powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, both models can be equipped with a highly efficient and easy-to-use hydrostatic transmission with exclusive TwinTouch pedals, or a 12x12-speed mechanical transmission. The latter features an electrically engaged power reverser to enable simple changes of direction at the press of a button. As a result, the easier and faster shifting helps to save fuel and reduce costs. The ergonomic flat-floor open station operator platform is easy to access and also features a foldable ROPS, which allows the tractor to be parked in a normal garage. An independent pto sets the 4M Series tractors apart from similar competitive products and can be engaged on the go without stopping or pressing the clutch pedal, for extra versatility and operator comfort during pto operations.

The cab features a tiltable and telescopic steering wheel for improved accessibility and driving comfort, a tilting passenger seat with optional safety belt and an onboard computer on the power reverser models to control driving speed and engine rpm. Transmission options on the new four-cylinder 5E Series models include the 12x12-speed power reverser transmission for speeds up to 22mph (35kph), or a 24x12-speed power reverser HiLo transmission for a maximum speed of 25mph (40kph). These larger 5E Series tractor models are fitted with a spacious TechCentre cab similar to the established 5M Series, which includes a mechanically suspended seat, fingertip MFWD engagement and a fixed windscreen with good visibility to front implements. A premium air suspended seat and a passenger seat with seat belt are optionally available.

Turning St Neots Red

Both these new 4M Series tractors have a maximum lift capacity of 1400kg, enabling the operation of a wide range of implements, including an optional, easy to attach John Deere front loader. In addition to the 4M Series, the new larger four-cylinder 5085E 85hp

St Neots Town Council Invests In Toro

ince Kevin Matthews arrived at St Neots Town Council five years ago as operations manager he has had one aim in mind: to turn the existing fleet of machinery Toro red.

S

“When I arrived at St Neots Town Council it was immediately obvious that the machines being used weren’t the best for the job,” he says. “There had been no clear strategy in place when making machinery purchases up to that point and as a result the kit was wrong for the job intended.” “I’ve been ‘making-do’ by increasing cutting frequencies with the machines we have, while waiting for the budget to start building a proper fleet of machines. I was confident that Toro was the

best way forward in terms of quality of cut and build quality. “For effective grounds maintenance it’s imperative to consider the machine in relation to the type of grass being cut and the desired finish. You want the best possible cut for the best possible cost. The Toro CT2120 delivers just that. It is the first capital piece of equipment we’ve had since 2007 and the start of my dream Toro fleet!” The CT2120 was chosen by Kevin for its ability to produce a fine cut

and will be used for cutting village greens and lawn cemeteries. “The CT2120 is lightweight and easy to manoeuvre around smaller spots and has a lovely fine cut for high visibility spots. The fact that it’s lightweight and compact means it can be easily moved between sites on a trailer drawn by one of our vans, too,” he says.

“It’s absolutely brilliant to have a decent bit of kit at last. It’s not only made a difference to the results we produce, but it’s also made the grounds team’s job that much more enjoyable.” Going forward Kevin has a threeyear plan that will see all old machinery replaced - with Toro of course!
