WHAT’S IN THIS ISSUE FEATURES
Hi, I hope that you have all had a great summer and will have a chance to take a well earned rest.
Flooding – how to get prepared! Cash Free Holidays
But as you know, there is no rest for the wicked. No sooner does the park quieten down a bit, than you have to start thinking about next season and the changes and upgrades that you want to get finished over the winter. So in this issue we cover some park improvements including new ideas, new companies and new products that you might find useful.
Park Improvements API - High quality Play Areas Spatex Show Guide
However, before we think about next season we have to make sure that that we get through the winter safely. It may seem a long time ago that half the country was under water and we were moving fallen trees and repairing damaged buildings, but the weather is on the turn and forecaster are predicting rain and high winds as the trend for the next few months. To help you prepare we have a couple of great articles about what you can and should be doing in preparation for the winter. A good assessment of your park and plan of action should the worst happen is a great start. It also makes sense to get in touch with your insurance company and work with them now rather than wait until you ring them to make a claim. It’s not something we really want to think about but as weather conditions seem to get more extreme it makes a lot of sense to prepare properly. Hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to speaking with you or seeing you at the shows coming up over the next few months. All the best Nina

Get ahead of the competition…
…and attend SPATEX 2015 (Sunday February 1st to Tuesday 3rd) at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena. As the UK’s leading pool, spa and sauna Exhibition it’s a must attend event for any holiday park which is planning on adding, or currently has, wet leisure facilities.
I
f there is one single recreational facility that a customer consistently looks for in a holiday park it is a swimming pool. Invariably it is the focus for activities and the fun and sense of well being they offer is what holidays are made of. As competition amongst holiday parks increases it is essential to stay ahead of the game and keep abreast of developments in the water leisure world. Which is why the SPATEX Expo has established itself as a hot attraction for the holiday park owner and operator. Unique showcase Entering its 19th year and with well over a hundred exhibitors, SPATEX plays host to the UK’s largest annual display of wet leisure equipment. If it’s not at
4
SPATEX, it’s not worth seeing! For 2015, the Exhibition is expanding into halls one and two of Coventry’s Ricoh Arena Jaguar Exhibition Hall so there will be even more to see! Companies such as Golden Coast will be launching a stunning new Tylö Steam Room called the Panacea. Also taking a stand, is Certikin International, the UK’s largest supplier and manufacturer of wet leisure equipment. ‘Playing with water is a vital part of a child’s development,’ says Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson. ‘Although the primary aim of our play feature equipment is to allow kids to have fun in a safe environment it allows them, at the same time, to learn through play.’ Slides and play structures, in the shape of mermaids, giant taps and pirate ships, are just some of the fun play features that Certikin has to offer. All the interactive features are very easy to install. There’s no need for additional plumbing because most of the water features have built-in mechanical hand pumps that children operate manually.

Reduce your costs Although the dividends are rich, the maintenance of a water leisure facility can be a major expense. A visit to SPATEX will show you all the latest innovations in sustainable energy and good housekeeping. The pool industry is currently working hard on green issues and great strides are being made in renewable technology. Heat pumps have been an accepted technology for well over 20 years and new generation heat pumps, saving even more energy, are being developed all the time. The Government's target of 15 percent of energy to be derived from re-newables by 2020 assumes significant growth in the use of supporting technologies in order to meet this commitment. Aside from heat pumps and dehumidifiers, there are other ways to reduce energy consumption such as heat retention covers, enclosures, water circulating pumps, chemical dosing systems – all of which have seen huge energy saving advances in the last few years.

for fewer headaches
Lady’s Mile Holiday Park is a family run business, situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Devon and less than a mile from the ‘Blue Flag’ beaches of Dawlish Warren. It is one of two holiday parks run by the Jeffery family, who have welcomed guests for holidays in the West Country since 1958. This year, Lady’s Mile introduced the Embed cashless payment system to its park , into its two amusement arcades, the coin-op laundry, full service bar, restaurant and fish and chip shop and even a mobile tablet system which can take orders for refreshments from around the outdoor pool.
8
“The driver behind this project was the amusement arcade,” admits Jason Jeffery, one of the park’s owners. “We have always had a lot of kids who use the arcade – sometimes unattended – and we were constantly dealing with problems such as coin jams. Our engineer would spend five or six hours a day dealing with this in high season, it was a complete nightmare.” In March this year, Embed installed the system, which works using smart cards, which the guests swipe on attractive colour-display units that can be attached onto the machines at the point where the cash mechanism would normally be placed. The swipers feature full wireless connectivity making them easy and quick to install. The system also manages all the stock and inventory for the bar and restaurant as well as the redemption and merchandise for the amusement arcade.
www.HolidayParksManagement.com
When a guest checks into Lady’s Mile Holiday Park they can load value onto a card with cash or debit card providing a single card payment solution for the week or weekend. The Lady’s Mile Rechargeable Fun Card can be purchased and reloaded at any number of Point of Sale Stations and the Self Service Kiosk throughout the facility. “The installation of the Embed Card System was one of the most organized and professional jobs we have done in a long time. Not only did the team install the system but they coached us on some great options to enhance the guest service experience,” says Jason. Customers have taken to the new system, which is compulsory to use in the amusement arcade, but which currently co-exists alongside traditional payment methods around the rest of the park . “We have encouraged our guests to make use of the new system by offering them an extra pound to spend on the amusement machines for every ten pounds they load

onto the card,” says Jason. “We also offer a system where they get a discount off their next trip with us if they spend over a certain amount.” The holidaymakers appreciated not having to carry cash around with them all the time – or having to give it to the kids. They did not worry about losing the cards as they could register the cash they had loaded onto them and could get a replacement from reception. The staff have also taken to using the new system. “It just makes life so much easier for us,” says Shane, working behind the bar at Lady’s Mile. “When you have a queue of people waiting to be served, the last thing you need is to take a debit or credit card payment or to have to count out lots of change. This way, payments are made much more quickly and efficiently. There was hardly any training necessary for me to learn how to use the system, it is very self-explanatory.”
Shane
The card system has now been in place for one full summer season and Jason feels it has been worth the investment. “We didn’t have a single problem with the amusement arcade all summer. That headache has completely gone,” he says. “It was a significant investment at the time but it has definitely paid for itself and already I would say 98 per cent of the guests love it.” Less machine downtime, shorter queues and the ability to place and pay for orders while lounging by the pool have all increased sales at the park this summer. There is also anecdotal evidence that the smart cards have inspired more loyalty from customers who prefer to spend the money on their cards in the park rather than spending extra cash outside it. Jason Jeffery In September, Jason and the team kindly allowed Embed, the supplier of the system, to co-host a two-day event at the park with one of its partners Bandai Namco, manufacturer of amusement machines and supplier of prizes to the arcades. The event attracted around 30 park operators who went to see the system in action. Embed Systems are a total operating solution for any entertainment facility. Embed Systems allow for admissions control, machine monitoring, cashless operation of games and attractions, retail, food and beverage sales, loyalty systems, full prize redemption management, and integrated event scheduling – for more details visit the web site at www.embedcard.com. Since then technology has moved on and after some research and looking at other systems in use, I decided that the Semnox product was my preferred system,” said Norman Wallis, Owner, Southport Pleasureland. “Having been in test mode for six months and a further six in operational mode, we are very happy to be using this technology and the feedback from our customers has also been very positive. JJCA CA SSystems ystems – CCashless ashless sshould hould ccome ome w with ith aann iincentive ncentive The challenge with a holiday park is to keep people on site and maximise revenues. Loyalty schemes are an obvious step and Cashless is another possibility. With Cashless there is always a debate about whether the customers will accept it - the answer is they will if they either “have to use it” or there is an “incentive to use it”, with the second option being more preferable. The benefits of cashless are mainly for the site operator in terms of reduced cash handling, reduced cash shrinkage, less
maintenance around coin and note jams and the freeing up of the cash float in hoppers if applied to gaming machines as well as amusements. There are lots of systems that can cater for amusement machines, but few that can address gaming machines. Loyalty schemes are therefore the key to the success of any cashless installation by making it attractive to the customers. Extending the loyalty and cashless operation to the over 18 areas helps keep customers on the site. Systems such as the JCA

The Site Manager loyalty schemes offer maximum flexibility with “happy hour” extra rewards and full integration with redemption schemes. Ultimately the site has to make a considered judgement when it comes to cashless; the reasons for going cashless have to be clear and customer focused.

Make the Green Choice with Etesia Etesia UK is pleased to announce the appointment of Green Choice Limited, based in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, as their exclusive robotic mower dealer for East Anglia. The company will supply, service and install the complete range of ETMower robotic mowers as well as other Etesia models from the Green Technology™ range.
A new seamless SureSet pathway guides guests from the recently opened Azteca Hotel to the amazing AMAZU Treetop Adventure and new Temple Bar & Restaurant terrace. Another high profile installation for SureSet, the UK’s leading manufacturer and installer of high quality residential and commercial permeable resin bound paving. “This was a great project to work on, and a huge achievement for everyone involved. To develop the outside area of the new Hotel in such a short space of time with such fantastic results is amazing. For us it was less than two months from a phone call in May to installing the 291m² Barley Beach pathway in July. Despite the quick turnaround we maintained the high level of service people have come to expect from SureSet; several site visits were made to meet with the contractors, Gilbert-Ash, to discuss base build up, the capabilities of SureSet and the installation process.
Green Choice believes there is a ‘technology revolution’ underway in grounds care machinery and this new partnership underlines the company’s eco-friendly philosophy. Using lithium-ion batteries, the ETmower; a range of three robotic mowers that can maintain areas up to 20,000m², is a non-polluting alternative to the typical petrol or diesel powered mower. Robot mowers reduce the cost of grass maintenance considerably, not only in terms of labour and maintenance costs, but also by cutting energy bills and maintenance costs. “Green is the future – it’s quiet, it’s safe, has low or nil emissions and of course it’s much more cost-effective which is why we first started looking at the range of Etesia robot mowers. If you look at it, the figures do stack up. So from a commercial point of view, if it stacks up for us then it stacks up for everyone else and of course with the environmental benefits and noise benefits – it makes perfect sense,” said John McCallum, Director of Green Choice. Mulch mowing is 100% natural as it does away with the need to gather up, store and dispose of the grass clippings. It also fertilises the soil, helps the grass stand up to drought conditions and because the ETMower can make for an easier life for many groundscare professionals, John insists that it can enable them to concentrate on other areas of their work. “It’s just another great tool for any groundsman to use. It’s not to replace them; in fact the robot mower allows them to get on with all the important tasks such as soil analysis and scarification. You can leave more of the hard work, so to speak, to the machine!” he said.
Our Technical Team were also involved; testing the concrete additive to be used in the construction of the underlying base to make sure it was compatible with SureSet – we always go that extra mile for our customers!” said Hugh Haines, SureSet Business Development Coordinator Since SureSet was established in 1997 they have worked hard to maintain the highest quality of materials and workmanship, and have successfully established themselves as a brand synonymous with high standards and value for money. This is backed up by SureSet’s unique 15 year guarantee. Other satisfied SureSet customers include Aston Martin, Butlin’s and Manchester City Football Club.
John believes that their market will predominantly be sports grounds, organisations like the National Trust, schools, hospitals, and large domestic properties and although the robot mower is new to Green Choice, the grounds maintenance specialists have built up a good working relationship with Etesia over recent years. “We have been using Etesia machines for the last two or three years and we’ve had a great service from them. The back-up we receive is really good and we just like their style. We can trust them, we can work with them and so we thought that if we are going to partner with someone in the UK then we want to partner with someone we trust.” For further information visit www.etesia.co.uk.

Tempt Family Holidaymakers with High-Quality Play Areas
L
ooking to attract more families? A well-designed play area featuring high-quality equipment will deliver great value for years to come.
Play areas are designed for parks of all shapes and sizes with budgets to match. So whether you’re looking to create a brand new play area from scratch, update an existing play area or replace play equipment that has reached the end of its natural life, the Association of Play Industries (API) is here to help. API members are the UK‘s leading manufacturers, installers, designers and distributors of outdoor and indoor play equipment and safety surfacing. They operate to the highest standards, abide by a strict Professional Code of Conduct, and are credit-checked and monitored regularly for financial stability and security. Wherever you see the API ‘current member’ badge, you can expect expert advice, high-quality play equipment and high standards, based on many years’ experience working with holiday and caravan park operators across the UK. API member companies work closely with clients to provide recommendations on design, equipment, materials and safety surfacing that meet a brief and budget, and will explain inspection, maintenance and repair, which is essential for any play area. According to the API, key considerations to bear in mind when planning a play area are: Capacity: the number of children likely to be playing in a play area at any one time is key. Play equipment standards are based on minimum user numbers rather than a large number of children playing at the same time, so the design of your play area should be based on peak, high-season numbers. There is no set formula for this but an API member will factor this into the design. Surfacing: safety surfacing absorbs impact, protecting children against critical head injury if they fall while playing. API members advise on the best surfacing options. Location: consider the safety and accessibility of the proposed site for your play area. Think about how children will get to it and consider any traffic hazards, busy thoroughfares, blind spots, deep or lying water and overhead cables. Use fencing only if required for safety reasons, for instance, as additional security for a toddler play area. Comfort: plan to create a comfortable experience for children and families. Remember to include seating or picnic facilities, shade and shelter, and litter bins. Age-appropriate: make your play area as appealing as possible by providing a range of equipment to attract different age ranges. Separate toddler play areas from older children’s equipment to minimise the risk of accidents.
Risk: risk assessments needn’t restrict children’s enjoyment so consider installing equipment that provides a real sense of adventure.. Children enjoy a degree of risk when playing and actively benefit from it, so provide some challenging play equipment for added excitement and fun.
Before opening any new play area to the public, the API recommends that a Post-Installation Inspection takes place. This is undertaken by a registered, certificated Register of Play Inspectors International (RPII) inspector and is commissioned by the play company or park operator. Once this Inspection is completed and satisfactory, responsibility for safety passes to the park operator to put in place an inspection regime, as set out in BS EN 1176, the standard for play equipment. According to the RPII, best practice is to adopt a three-tier inspection regime incorporating RPII training for staff which covers: 1. Routine visual inspection Observation of the play space by a trained staff member looking for obvious hazards like missing or broken parts, broken glass or vandalism. This should take place weekly in low season and daily in high season. 2. Operational inspection A more detailed structural examination of wear, tear and stability of equipment by a trained staff member. This should take place every three months in low season and once a month in high season. 3. Annual main inspection An annual inspection by a qualified external RPII annual outdoor inspector to ensure compliance with standards and overall safety.
A well-designed, well-maintained, fun play area with top quality equipment will ensure that families return to your holiday or caravan park time after time. So for peace of mind, choose a respected, trustworthy API member company. For further information about the benefits of using an API member and how the API can help holiday park, caravan and campsite operators, contact: Deborah Holt, tel: 024 7641 4999 ext. 208, email api@api-play.org www.api-play.org

A Money Spinning Solution for Guests Dirty Laundry
A
ccording to a recent report by Barclays*, the UK’s hospitality and leisure sectors are set to see significant growth over the next few years. The report reveals annual expenditure from domestic tourists is expected to surge by 25% to over £108 billion by 2017, and indicates that many consumers will continue to opt to bypass overseas travel in favour of domestic locations. * Barclays report available from http://www.newsroom.barclays.com/Press-releases/Staycation-Nation-domestic-tourists-will-contribute-108-billion-to-the-UK-economy-by-2017-b69.aspx
With increasing numbers of tourists looking to choose a UK based holiday, sites with a clearly targeted strategy of both promotion and investment in facilities are set to benefit, so it’s key to understand the wants and needs of the customer base. Customers expect to find a similar standard of facilities on the site, as they’d have in their own home (if not better in many cases), and this includes the laundry facilities. Despite the fact your guests are there to 'get away from it all', many will still need to do their holiday laundry. For families that make up a large percentage of the staycation market, good laundry facilities are a must, as dirty laundry can quickly mount up, especially with exciting days spent exploring the great (and often mucky) outdoors! Providing easy to use, clean and attractive guest launderette facilities can be beneficial in a number of ways, not least because it can provide you with an additional source of revenue generation. Stackable washers and dryers enable you to put both a washer and dryer in a single machines footprint, so you may be surprised at how many machines you can fit into a relatively small space, maximising both your space and revenue generation. PHS Laundryserv, are one of the UK’s leading providers of commercial laundry equipment, and provide numerous holiday sites from Scotland to Cornwall with easy to use,
reliable washers and dryers backed up with a five star service. Victoria Davies, PHS Laundryserv Marketing Manager, explains “We provide a range of launderette options that are ideal for holiday parks – from coin operated machines to cashless laundry facilities that use tokens or smartcards.” “Unfortunately an all too common problem with coin operated launderettes is that they can become a magnet for theft related vandalism, especially as they are often located in nonstaffed, fairly out of the way areas. To overcome this, PHS Laundryserv provide a Smart Laundry System which removes the potential for theft by providing user financed washers and dryers, but without the need for money to collect in unsecure areas.” “The system utilises smart cards and non-laundry located pay stations and wireless technology. Customers purchase (or are provided with) a laundry card of which there are a number of options including reusable or disposable cards or fobs, which are then credited using a pay station. This can be located anywhere on site which is both accessible and secure, for example the site reception or shop, so removing the need for money to collect in the machines in the launderette. To use the launderette facilities, users simply scan their card at smart stations in the laundry, which debits the card and starts the laundry equipment.” continued

continued “This means there’s no money collecting in the laundrette, so site managers don’t have to worry about staff emptying money from the machines or carrying large, heavy amounts of coins around site. It also removes the hassle of customers needing change for the laundry and as the system is both secure against fraud and misuse and is easy to use, it’s a welcome solution from both the users and managers perspective” PHS Laundryserv provide the complete solution for your launderette facilities from guidance on the numbers and capacity of machines, through to installation and crucially - an ongoing maintenance support service from our team of inhouse engineers. We provide 24/7 customer support to all customers and a choice of support packages including a 7 day call out option. All equipment is available on either a purchase or service rental option, with the benefits of the latter including no initial capital outlay, as the cost is spread over the lifetime of the equipment. For one all-inclusive monthly payment, all servicing & repairs (including all parts & labour) are covered, providing you with peace of mind that there are no hidden costs. It also allows for ease of equipment upgrade should your requirements change in the future. So whatever the size of your launderette and whatever your budget, we’ve got a solution for your business. Rise in Demand for Relcross Waterless Urinals he waterless urinal is one of those rare products that save money and time while conserving natural resources.
and the same standard clean up associated with traditional urinals. No flush means no stuck or broken valves and since no hard water runs through the sewage lines they remain free of calcification.
Firstly, there is no flushing mechanism. This reduces the purchase price and also makes them cheaper to install. Secondly, no water means you save 100% in water charges and enjoy reduced sewage charges – both of which are on the rise. Thirdly, maintenance for a Relcross Waterless urinal amounts to periodic changing of the touch free waterless urinal cartridge
There are hygiene benefits too. Without flushing water, there are no bacteria spreading flush plumes. This means that the area around waterless urinals and the entire washroom is cleaner and more hygienic.

cartridge. The cartridge's airtight seal combined with the liquid sealant is estimated to be 500-times more effective than conventional P-traps. It’s hard to see why anyone would plan to install a system that requires a mains water feed and waste drain, with flushing mechanisms and controls just to use vast quantities of water that has to be paid for, when you can use a system that costs less to buy, only needs a waste drain and uses no water at all! Don’t lose weed control after the Indian Summer
T
his year we have been treated to an exceptional weather run, with in effect three Springs – with dry spells interspersed with periods of wet weather. The result has been exceptional growing conditions – not only for grass but also, unfortunately, for weeds.
As Local Authority budgets have been slashed, weed control budgets have been a target for cuts as it is often viewed as nonessential. However, the strong growth of weeds such as buddleia may eventually lead to even more costly damage to infrastructure. This year has put good weed control into sharp perspective and underlined the need for targeted pesticide applications as the preferred method to keep our country's hard surfaces in good condition and save large expenses in repairs to infrastructure.
Park operators must be careful not to miss the window for treating Japanese Knotweed, as it seems to be shutting down early. Any knotweed that requires treatment should be undertaken in the next couple of weeks, before the onset of winter frosts. There is bound to be a period of wet weather soon and this will bring the worm population to the top of our playing surfaces. What will remain unseen is the leatherjacket population that has undoubtedly been growing exponentially year on year. All the Complete Weed Control franchisees are able to undertake the above applications at a reasonable cost, taking all the Health and Safety worries away from customers. All empty containers would be taken away and a record of application left with clients. For more information, please contact Complete Weed Control’s National office on 01325 324 277 or visit www.completeweedcontrol.co.uk

THE NO. 1 STRATEGY FOR IMPROVING YOUR PARKS BOOKINGS Accepting bookings from guests using a mobile or tablet!
W
ith 44% of travellers researching and booking using a mobile (and 49% of people with 2 children) using tablets or mobiles, your park needs to be easy to book on a small screen. This should be the top action you should take to help your park get more bookings. So how can you make sure you meet your customer needs, and of course, your own at the same time. The answer is in two parts, your website and your booking system.
“Just making your website mobile enabled is not enough”
NEARLY 50% USE A MOBILE OR TABLET TO BOOK
It is important that you change your website to be mobile friendly and this is best done using a responsive design so that it is able to display properly on a range of screen sizes. Don’t underestimate how important this is and remember almost half of your audience is using a mobile or tablet.
YOUR ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM MUST BE RESPONSIVE AND FAST Your online booking engine must be responsive, so the booking can be completed easily and quickly. So assuming you are on-board with this, the next point to consider is what the consumer is looking for. Things have changed in recent times with people looking for deals first, then choosing the type of accommodation. An example of this is a ‘weekend saver break’ (the deal) followed by the the type of accommodation, standard or superior /large or small (the accommodation). When you think about it, this makes
sense, as people are thinking (searching) for a ‘weekend break’ not for a ‘double room’. Booking engines that can present deals, rather than rooms/pitches only, make it easier for people to find what they want. A really impressive example of this concept implemented in a hotel chain can be seen at www.heritagehotels.co.nz, just explore the booking process on their site.
A booking engine should have good promotions capability. Booking engines are often misunderstood when it comes to the difference a good one can make. The ability to use promotional codes, set up conditions around promotions, and feature ‘Hot Deals’ really means you can increase bookings. Add to this some clever use of packages and you can now promote your different rooms based on deals not just on a single price or room type. Connections to TripAdvisor and FaceBook are essential of course.
Channel Management If you were a hotel you would already be familiar with this term. Channels are routes you use to sell your park. Your website is a channel, a travel agent is a channel, PitchUp, Booking.com are channels. A successful marketing strategy will use several routes/channels but by having 28
www.HolidayParksManagement.com
several, it means you have to manage availability and rates across them. Done manually this is almost impossible to do efficiently and to get the best result. Typically parks will allocate lodges/pitches to a channel, but then what happens is the successful channel use their allocation and have zero availability, yet there are unsold lodges/pitches in other channels. So sales are lost until you manually intervene to reallocate. A channel manager is software service that does this for you saving you time and ensuring that as bookings come in, say from your website, availability is adjusted automatically in the other channels. If you need to change rates then you make the change in the channel manager and this is automatically updated to the connected channels. Historically parks have not had any channels that can be managed in this way but this is changing with the world’s biggest channel Booking.com now taking on parks with lodges,
chalets, statics and pods. PitchUp too generate a lot of bookings for parks. As a final thought in this article I should mention payment processing. The trend is for real time online payment – it’s how the internet generally works and how people expect to pay. It improves your cash flow as well as reducing the time to manual process payments. Of course you should only use a booking engine and channel manager that is PCI certified – if doesn’t have a certificate then walk away from it.

Padstow park will use award to boost needy families scheme
A
Padstow holiday park honoured in the 2014 Cornwall Tourism Awards says it will use the publicity to help spread awareness of its free holidays scheme for needy families. Mother Ivey's Bay Holiday Park, which scooped a Silver accolade in the November awards, hopes to encourage other holiday parks in the UK to adopt its charity project.
This year, business owner Patrick Langmaid offered free week-long stays in luxury caravan holiday homes to 14 families identified by supporting charities.
Now he hopes that his initiative will also be adopted by others among the UK's 3000-plus parks as part of a national effort to provide holidays to families in crisis.
It was the second year for the scheme which was started in 2013 with the help of TV presenter Fern Britton who visited Mother Ivey's Bay to help with its launch.
Mother Ivey's provides 230 caravan holiday homes, both privately owned and for hire, plus 120 pitches for touring guests, and a field which opens in summer for campers.
Patrick pledged to give away a week's holiday to a needy family for every hundred bookings his park takes, and says he has been delighted at the response.
Patrick, whose family has owned the business for over 25 years, today runs the beachside park with the help of his wife Margaret.
The Impactful Reception At Anytime Booking we work with many parks around the UK to streamline the check-in process; the diversity of reception facilities is fascinating. From offering innovative welcome packs, to uber-cool tent tags and basic self check-in systems (we’ve seen a piece of paper pegged to the gatepost with a highlighter pen!), there are so many different approaches to receiving guests. Stepping outside of the physical reception space, ‘Reception’ also comes to mean the feelings instilled in your guests when they find your website or listing; the involvement they have when they make their booking; the continuous communication they’ll have before they arrive. They like to feel the welcome, the warmth and the support from the start. Picture: Trewan Hall Park, Cornwall
T
here is a buzz in the air about the park reception. It is a changing and challenging environment. ‘Reception’ is no longer solely a physical space, it has stepped into the realms of the virtual. A park now begins to receive its guests long before they physically walk through its doors.
30
We would love to hear about your reception! ‘The Reception’ is also a hot topic at our Anytime Booking Conference on Thursday 5th February 2015. There are still delegate spaces for our free one-day event. Risk assessment
how to get prepared Who can forget the images of the floods at the beginning of this year? Villages stranded from the rest of the country, livestock being moved to safety and livelihoods and homes wrecked.
Get a flood plan Every park should have a flood plan that is known to all members of staff. This will outline the action that everyone will take if a flood situation should arise. There should be a trigger point at which time the flood plan is put into operation. Ensure that the park has some alarm equipment such as a bell, siren, or megaphones, instructions on how to operate it should be available and known to staff. Once you have completed your flood plan, the next step is to test it with staff. Carry out a simulated flooding event. This will test if communication links are set up and telephone numbers are correct. You could carry out this test when the site is closed to visitors.

Protecting your property The British Holiday & Homes Parks Association (BH&HPA) and National Caravan Council (NCC) have published ‘Guidelines of good practice for the transportation, movement, siting, de-siting and commissioning of single unit caravan holiday homes’. The guidelines provide essential advice for owners of caravans and holiday homes to help minimise damage. You can email info@thencc.org.uk to obtain a copy of the guide. Practical ways of minimising the impacts of flooding include raising static caravans using axle stands to a level of about half a meter above ground level. This will reduce the risk of floodwater reaching the underside of the floor. If floodwater reaches floor level or above, many insurance companies will not allow the caravan to be reoccupied and it will need to be replaced. Other considerations should include anchors or tethering as some caravans can float away in just two feet of water. It may also be practical to fit flotation devices to static caravans. The devices are attached to the bottom of the caravans and, once inflated, allow the caravan to be lifted during flooding and lowered as flood waters subside.

A Swimming pool is an expensive but valuable assets, it makes sense to enable them to be used earlier and later in the season or throughout the year. The fact that the “Great British Summer” has failed to make an appearance for the last few years makes putting them under cover them even more important. A pool is undoubtedly the campsites major attraction and is even more so if the pool is enclosed. When it comes to booking one of the questions most often asked of campsites is whether or not they have a covered pool.
