Top Tips for Play on Holiday here are many stepping stones needed to create a new play space; with every one as important as the last.

T

In order to help both communities and the commercial leisure sector negotiate these sometimes slippery paths, the API has published a new document: Top Tips for Finding a Quality Play Provider. The document provides essential advice on planning spaces for play such as levels of usage and what age-range it should be designed for; and business concerns such as financial security and proof of experience in play. Such advice is particularly important for holiday centres which rely upon consistency and quality in their play spaces all year round. In order to cater to seasonal demand, playgrounds must be tough enough to withstand both the harsh weathers of long winters and the busy periods of almost continual use by children through long summer days. As stated above, the first step for many buyers will be to assess the play needs of their holiday park. The next is to establish the practicalities of your plan. Is there enough space for all the play equipment you’d like to install; do you know how it should all be placed and are your cost estimates realistic, including installation and maintenance? This is where API members can provide you with design and planning support. Many of our member companies employ skilled play professionals who can help you create inclusive designs and find funding solutions to meet your budget. P.T.O.

Record year for Polaris olaris Industries Inc. has reported a record fourth quarter and a record net income year of $227.6 million in 2011.

P

All product lines from the Minneapolis based company experienced increased sales and market share for the full year. International sales increased 43% in the fourth quarter and 39% for the full year despite a volatile European economic environment. Fourth quarter 2011 earnings per diluted share increased 15% to a record $0.90 with sales increasing 26% from the same period in 2010, to a record $782.0 million. Sales for the full year in 2011 totalled a record $2,656.9 million, an increase of 33 percent compared to sales of $1,991.1 million for the full year in 2010. “Our record fourth quarter results were a fitting ending to a year in which we generated record annual sales and earnings and significantly exceeded our initial expectations, stated Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chief Executive Officer, “our top and bottom-line expansion, and the momentum we are sustaining throughout our business, directly results from our focus on driving innovation, enhancing our product offering, reducing costs, and growth through new global markets and adjacencies. Specifically, during the year we furthered our leading market share position in off-road vehicles while continuing to gain market share in motorcycles and snowmobiles. Moreover, we introduced over 20 new vehicles, including award winning products like the RANGER RZR 570

value recreational off-road vehicle, the 800 Pro-RMK snowmobile, and the Victory Cross Country Tour motorcycle. Our operations team managed to meet the increased demand for these vehicles while bringing our new Monterrey manufacturing facility online on time and on budget, driving initial 2011 savings on plan with future projections in line with stated expectations. According to Scott Wine, the 2012 business outlook is equally good. Polaris anticipates further growth and market share gains in their core business, while maintaining focus on expanding gross and net margins and investments. The company also added to their small electric vehicle portfolio with the acquisition of Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) and Goupil Industrie SA, which expands their ability to compete in this fragmented, fast-growing $4 billion market. It all looks very promising, not just for the shareholders but equally for dealers and anyone involved in the sales process for Polaris products in the UK and Europe. Park News Not "Olympicphobia" is suspected as the reason for a sharp rise in bookings at a major holiday parks group. They're off! Londoners pick parks for Olympic escapes People planning to escape London during the 2012 Olympics have given a flying start to this year's holiday bookings at Park Holidays UK. The major southern-based parks group reports a sharp rise in January bookings compared with this time last year, and suspects that "Olympic-phobia" is partly responsible. "Everyone's looking forward to the games themselves, but not to the prospect of staying in the already congested capital during July and August," said Park Holidays UK director Tony Clish. "The high volume of London postcodes on our bookings suggest that many families are planning to swap the razzmatazz of the event for more relaxing surroundings. "Around eight million people live in London, and just a small percentage of those deciding to get away during the event will provide a big tourism boost to the regions," added Tony. The 25-strong parks group says 12

that bookings are up on all its holiday centres in southern England, Devon and Dorset - and that international visitors will swell numbers even further. The reason, Tony points out, is that Britain attracts more than 30 million holidaymakers from overseas every year - very few of whom will actually hold tickets for the Olympics. He believes that many, having seen reports about London being swamped with visitors during the games, will prefer to stay outside the capital but within travelling distance to it. "Even when our holiday parks are full to capacity, there's no sense of being amongst a crowd because our accommodation and facilities are spread over many green acres," said Tony. "That's why a park is a perfect escape from London, even if you are a resident in the city and just want to catch your breath for a while during the event," he suggests Park Holidays UK says it has decided not to raise its prices during the period of the 2012 London games - and is even offering early-booking discounts for the main summer weeks. Tony also emphasises that the group is not promoting itself as an Olympics-free zone:

"We will be going all-out to celebrate the event along with the rest of the country, and there will be wide-screen TVs in all our clubs so that no-one need miss the action," he said. "All our guests will be missing is London's crowds and inflated prices - while helping to spread the economic benefits of the Olympics to the regions," added Tony. The company's 2012 spring and summer holidays, and details of its early-bird discounts, are featured on Park Holidays UK's website at www.ParkHolidays.com

Candid cameras ready as park's wild guests check in A top Lakeland holiday park is planning to use its security camera system for a sneak survey of guests using its facilities during the winter months. Skelwith Fold Caravan Park in Ambleside, which closed for the season in November, believes the project will show a fascinating glimpse of the grounds' hidden wildlife. Red squirrels, badgers and red deer are among the indigenous animals which re-claim their right

tice Board to roam over the 130-acre park when its human guests depart. According to park director Henry Wild, they are encouraged out by Skelwith Fold's winter feeding programme which is based on eight dedicated feeding stations. Nuts, corn and grain are among the foods regularly replenished at the stations to sustain wildlife which normally hides deep in the park's broadleaf and pine woodlands. Now Henry hopes that the park's motion-activated CCTV cameras will capture the scenes he and his staff have often spotted of multiple species feeding together. The cameras will be trained on selected feeding stations which will transmit live footage to the reception building as well as recording the scenes both day and night. "It's an amazing spectacle to see a powerful stag alongside a group of diminutive red squirrels, and scores of birds of different types all in one spot," said Henry. "It's sometimes possible to glimpse our wildlife during the rest of the year, but the feeding programme shows just how rich and diverse our guest-list is during the winter!" he added. At holiday times, said Henry, Skelwith Fold regularly has upwards of one thousand people on the park - but this

figure drops to just half-a-dozen employees for three months every year. All staff are members of Skelwith Fold's conservation team which has helped the business achieve a number of prestigious environmental accolades over the years. These include the David Bellamy Conservation Award at its top gold level, and a letter of praise from Prince Charles for the its success in re-establishing colonies of red squirrels. Pictures from the nature watch will be posted on Skelwith Fold's website (www.skelwith.com), and Henry thinks that holiday guests will be surprised by what they see: "Within days of our closing each year, the animals begin to reassert their presence - and we turn from a busy holiday centre into a bustling wildlife park," said Henry. "It does give us plenty of extra mouths to feed, but the sight is a delight!" said Henry.

ngling still remains the biggest participative sport in the UK, with up to three million people regularly spending time by the water each year. It is also one of the best opportunities for parents (OK, Dad’s) to spend good quality time with their children in a healthy environment, where they can share their enthusiasm for a sport that captivates huge numbers of people every weekend.

A

With the pressures of modern life, increasing numbers of anglers are using their holidays as fishing time, either choosing destinations that provide specialist fishing lakes, or in the case of family holidays, a Holiday Park that has a lake which Dad can escape to for a few hours peace each day. For pretty modest sums, even small ponds can be made into an attraction that will help to attract and retain holiday park customers. In most situations, the simplest and quickest way to start a fishery is to stock with common and mirror carp. These fish are relatively cheap, you don’t need a huge number of them and they give by far the biggest fishing response per pound spent. They grow quickly and can be stocked at a size which is predator proof if birds are a problem. They don’t need a lot of looking after, the anglers throw lots of food in which keeps them happy for most of the year and a bucket of

food once a week when the weather is mild in the winter is sufficient to keep small ponds ticking over. Carp will live for a long time and anglers return the fish that they catch, so in most situations, stocking is a one time operation and the fish will grow and may even breed thus maintaining their numbers. Sport and Leisure Fisheries also supply tench, crucian carp and F1 hybrids – a type of carp that doesn’t grow very big, which is used in some specialist match fisheries. At the end of the day, our business is about putting smiles on the faces of anglers. If we can do that for your customers would that help to attract and retain customers at your site? If you think so, give us a call and we will be pleased to help put together the right plan for your lakes. Please call David Rance on 01952 585002 info@slf.uk.net www.slf.uk.ne

Liquid Pool Cover (LPC) is a totally flexible automatic cover that works by forming a transparent monomolecular layer on the surface of the water whenever it is not too disturbed. This layer significantly reduces evaporation, not only saving on water heating (over 70% of loss is due to evaporation), but far more importantly it can significantly reduce the cost of air heating and humidity control which generally represents over 75% of the total energy consumed. As with any cover, reduced evaporation means that when the pool is closed the air temperature can be set at a lower level and fresh air cut back to a minimum. Also any mechanical dehumidification will have less work to do. Contrary to a common misconception the water doesn’t have to be completely still for the LPC to work. It works to a greater or lesser degree depending on pool activity. An automatic dosing system ensures that the correct dose of Heatsavr is added at the same time each day.

A

24 Hour Cover One of the real performance benefits of the LPC is its 24 hour availability, whereas for most commercial pools a conventional cover can only be used when the pool is closed which for many may be a maximum of 8 hours at night. Admittedly when the water is particularly active the effect of an LPC will be minimal. BUT the pool water doesn’t have to be completely still for Heatsavr to have some effect - it works to a greater or lesser degree dependant on pool activity, so the majority of pools will still be gaining some daytime benefit particularly during quieter periods. The effect of this during opening hours should not be underestimated. For a typical leisure centre pool the cost of energy use relating to ventilation (fan power and heat loss) can account for over 60% of the total.

Pie Chart of Energy use Even though air temperature reduction may not be possible during the day, any

system incorporating humidity controlled variable fresh air should result in a reduction in ventilation heat loss and if also equipped with variable or two speed fans there should be additional savings in electrical consumption.

Level Deck Pools One myth that we are keen to dispel relates to the suitability of LPC’s for deck level pools. LPC’s work perfectly well on deck level pools as testified by a year long test carried out by a local authority. The Cusum gas analysis chart below clearly shows an immediate effect at the point of introducing the LPC in Nov 2008, with a continual downward trend thereafter. Indeed 80% 0f the commercial and Local Authority pools benefitting from LPC’s are of deck level design. More information about this is available on request.

Heatsavr has been the subject of numerous toxicology reports, all with favourable conclusions, the most recent of which is by KIWA, a European based but internationally recognised quality authority. http://www.1kiwa.com Safety benefits over conventional covers include manhandling issues, but probably the most significant is the avoidance of regular cleaning that is necessary with hard covers in order to prevent bacterial build which can easily occur in a rolled up cover.

Economics Requiring only a simple programmable dosing system the set up cost for LPC’s is low and whilst there is an ongoing cost of product this can be purchased as consumed and funded by savings. A conventional cover represents a significant capital expense which has to be amortized over its life, with regular maintenance and servicing being taken into consideration. Potential savings from a LPC should be between 4 and 6 times the cost of the product. LPC’s are recommended by many Carbon Trust Consultants and are included in the list of Salix Finance approved technologies.

Safety The LPC, Heatsavr, is a biodegradable liquid that is dosed into the pool at the rate of around 0.8 ml/m2/day. 90% of the liquid acts as a carrier for the active ingredient and this evaporates soon after dosing, leaving a typical concentration of around 50 parts per billion.

Heatsaver Ltd Tel: +44(0)1737 271879 Fax: +44(0)1737 219222 email: info@heatsaver.co.uk website: www.heatsaver.co.uk

Widely used, Liquid pool covers are now firmly established as a real and practical alternative to conventional pool covers and with swimming pools being one of the major energy consumers, LPC’s can go a long way to reducing wastage and provide a significant contribution towards Carbon Reduction Commitment. 22

WITH GEORDIE SHORE 31st January at 10pm on MTV (Sky channel 126, Virgin 311) n an effort to further raise the profile – and profitability! - of the “Glamping” market both for our own customers and the industry as a whole, we were delighted to reach agreement with MTV for them to have a Log Pod on the set of their highest ever rated UK show.

I

The show is watched by up to 1 million in the UK, and syndicated by MTV to hundreds of millions of viewers around the world. In addition, it receives a huge amount of media coverage in the tabloid press and lifestyle magazines. Geordie Shore is hardly a camping show – but will demonstrate that you can have warmth and luxury even in Newcastle, in the middle of winter! In these tough economic times, the show will also bring luxury camping to a whole new market of 25 – 35 year olds who would never have considered a camping break or holiday. In the two weeks since the first publicity photos were released by MTV, we have already seen a huge rise in the number of visitors to the network website at www.logpodholidays.co.uk and bookings taken by our client sites for both Log Pods and the new Gothic Pod.
