Where innovation meets inspiration - get inspired at Play & Attractions showcase at Leisure Industry Week (LIW) 2011 Bringing together over 9,000 senior buyers and decisionmakers from the UK visitor attractions industry each year, Leisure Industry Week (LIW) is the UK show for all stakeholders in the Play & Attractions and Leisure Facilities sectors. The Play Innovation Zone, which was launched last year with great success, is back to showcase suppliers of varying sizes who will show off their new products and latest innovations to visitors. The Theme Factory and Magical Fairy Land are also poised to provide plenty of inspirational content. The Magical Fairy Land is a purposebuilt fantastical live play feature that can be tailor made to suit a variety of attraction venues. It will also offer the opportunity to take advantage of marketer Russell Play’s wealth of industry

knowledge in terms of creativity and design within a live play environment. The brand new Theme Factory will help attractions build upon their current offer through the development of compelling and exciting new experiences. Creatively reinventing existing attractions space to drive increased revenue spend is imperative in the current economic climate and will be a key focus at LIW 2011. Experts from across the sector will be on hand to provide practical guidance and advice to organisations which are working hard to create original attractions destinations despite the recent dip in the economy. The Leisure Facilities sector will also be catered for with brand new energy saving presentations and exhibitors contributing to the show this year to include BRE and powerPerfector. In addition to these features, the Outdoor Demo Area and Attractions Industry Party are both back by popular demand.

An exciting development for LIW 2011 is he introduction of BRE, INFO, who are exhibiting for the

first time. In ‘Energy management – producing an efficient culture’, Dr Andy Lewry will present a step by step approach to energy management. He will cover how sources of data such as energy audits, EPSd/DECs and M&T can underpin energy management and the difference between asset and operational performance. During this talk, Andy will also introduce the new energy management standard IOS 50001, explaining how this can contribute to an auditable approach to the implementation of an energy management programme. LIW will have more than 150 hours of valuable seminar content in the new Education Village, combining

the latest in innovation and expert opinion from Cartoon Network, Vision XS and DP Associates. Turner Media Innovations and Cartoon Network will feature here with two seminars focusing on the influence children have on the activities and attractions families choose, and a discussion on the growing success and popularity of licensed attractions, drawing on their experience from the Ben 10 Rollercoaster and Cartoon Network street at Drayton Manor. DP Associates will present a session evaluating the option of

adding a secondary indoor element to seasonal outdoor attractions venues to enable them to operate all year round. The National Farm Attractions Network (NFAN) is also set to present a rural and countryside attractions seminar programme. The speakers and topics for this will be announced very soon. Play & Attractions and Leisure Facilities are just two of the seven sectors within LIW, a visitor badge provides access to a whole range of complimentary products and services to help improve attractions facilities and

drive secondary spend. It is recommended that visitors take some time to explore the entire show in order to discover the varied crossover opportunities which exist between the sectors. Registration is open at www.liw.co.uk so sign up now to avoid the onsite registration fee.

Opening dates, hours and web address: LIW 2011 takes place from 20 – 22 September at Birmingham NEC.

Opening times: Tuesday 20 Sept 10:00 – 17.00; Wednesday 21 Sept 10:00 – 17:00; Thursday 22 Sept 10:00 – 16:00

ith all of the tasks that are on your to-do lists for the successful management of your sites, it is important not to miss the value and responsibilities that come with a children's playground. Children love to play on and around their playgrounds, and this makes it all the more important that they are managed effectively. Care will need to be taken to ensure that faults are correctly identified and prioritised.

W

This is where an independent annual inspection comes to the fore. RoSPA undertake thousands of annual inspections every year. Within these it identifies the faults that actually cause accidents, and provides a means of prioritising the faults so that the most important or cost effective ones are dealt with first. The risk ratings within the

inspection reports give an indication of where limited resources should be allocated. By focusing on what needs to be done you will be helping to keep your playground as safe as it needs to be, whilst perhaps spending a little money now to save a lot more in the future. And with no commercial interest in the outcome of the inspection you can be sure that we all have the best interests of children at heart. ‘Build It And They Will Come!’… Providing That YOU Make Their Visit FUN! s a result of many owners of seaside resorts, holiday parks, piers and arcades converting their businesses into Family Entertainment Centre’s, in order to supply the high-spending family ‘Staycation’ business, World of Rides have solved their problem of how to replace the declining incomes of many of their traditional slot machines.

A

Coin-operated battery rides have become the most popular and profitable choice that have re-filled that void, due to their high earnings… and the fastest payback period (R.O.I.) in the entire children’s ride sector. New models such as the Formula One VMAX Racing Car, Super Bike Trike, Space Car, Beach Buggy and Bumper Space Cars have all emerged with more dynamic looks, both inside and out for 2011… and new battery technology means that larger capacity batteries now last throughout the day… and can be recharged overnight in-situ!

A whole host of new design innovations have gone into each model, some of them evident at a glance, others out of sight, such as direct-drive motors, and all models are now only manufactured with twin-seats, and a chassis that is strong enough to carry either two children or a… ‘Parent & Child’! The huge popularity and profitability of these pollution-free battery go-karts and trikes generate such high levels of family-spend, that they have now become an essential source of income to an ever growing number of operators during these difficult financial times, particularly amongst those with seasonal holiday sites. Battery rides always enjoy constant multi-use by the children, so their income levels are not dependant upon footfall alone, and neither are they weather dependant, as they can also be safely operated either indoors or outdoors… on any hard, level surface. The Bumper Space Cars and Quadbikes in particular can now also be used to regenerate the declining incomes of both synthetic and real ice rinks… as well as roller-skate rinks! As a result of the success of using World of Rides battery rides during 2010, many of the U.K.’s leading independent and multiple operators are already adding more Go-Karts, Bumper Cars and Bumper Boats to their parks and indoor FEC's for 2011… all with their own themed tracks and pools, in order to enhance the experience for their FUN seeking visitors… without any more worry about the U.K. weather! All their new products will be on show at both the Leisure Industry Exhibition (LIW) at the NEC in Birmingham on 20-22 September, and the Euro Attractions Show (EAS) at Olympia in London on 27-29 September 2011.

Park News Not Park peaks in Lake District tourism awards Visitors to Park Cliffe in Windermere this summer may well be greeted by even broader smiles than usual - for the business has just been named as Cumbria's top spot for park holidaymakers. The family-owned enterprise has beaten over 100 other holiday parks in the Lake District to take the Holiday Park of the Year accolade in the 2011 Cumbria Tourism Awards. Announced in July, it means that Park Cliffe will now go on to represent Cumbria in the national "Enjoy England Awards" early next year. For Susan and Derek Dickson, the award crowns their fourth year as owners of the business which they took over from Susan's parents in 2007. Since then, the couple have invested much time and energy into creating a first-class holiday experience for guests at the 25acre park above the eastern shores of Windermere. As well luxury holiday homes to hire and own, Park Cliffe provides panoramic pitches for the owners of touring caravans, motorhomes and tents, and also provides camping pods. Facilities include a newly refurbished restaurant specialising in Cumbria cuisine, luxury shower facilities with private bathrooms, and children's play area. However, said Susan, what made the Cumbria Tourism award particularly satisfying to win was the emphasis put by judges on 10

the quality of service provided by staff. When it was "mystery shopped" as part of the judging process, said Susan, the park's team earned glowing commendations for friendliness, caring attitude, and desire to help guests. Not that Park Cliffe is any stranger to appearing in the awards limelight. It has previously been named by the AA as the best place in North West England to pitch a tent - and frequently appears in magazine polls of readers' favourite parks. Park Cliffe is also a favourite of TV botanist David Bellamy who this year presented it with his prestigious Gold Conservation Award for protecting the natural environment. More information about the park can be found at www.parkcliffe.co.uk

Open proves Olympics have staying power for parks

three of which are close to the St George's Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent, where this year's Open was staged. He reports that all 450 touring caravan, motorhome and camping pitches were booked solid during the tournament which ran from 14-17 July. An estimated 200,000 people attended the Open this year - but that figure is likely to be greatly exceeded by national and overseas visitors to the Olympic Games in 2012. "I have no doubt that many of our visitors during the Open will have had their first taste of Keat Farm's holiday parks, and this was a fantastic chance to show them what we offer. "Many, I am certain, will be back and a similar opportunity awaits all parks next year, especially as there is bound to be great pressure on accommodation across much of Southern England.

Holiday parks should be limbering up now for next year's Olympics if they want to share in the extra revenue which could be generated by the games.

"The Olympics could provide our whole industry with a tremendous boost, and introduce many younger people especially to the benefits of our product.

That's the view of SE England parks group owner Malcolm Kent who says that this July's British Open Golf Championships showed the pulling power of major sporting events.

"I'd urge all parks to put themselves in the running now by flagging up their facilities to Olympic visitors," said Malcolm who is a former Chairman of both the NCC and BH&HPA.

Malcolm's business, Keat Farm, owns nine parks in the region,

He does, however, caution local businesses against trying to

tice Board profiteer from increased demand - and says that Keat Farm kept its tariffs pegged to normal rates during the Open. "Not all of our visitors were here because of the tournament, and our decision to maintain normal charges was to encourage as many people as possible to make return visits," added Malcolm. PR consultant Jon Boston on 01768 895225

Parks prove a cool decision for Brits abroad Expats feeling the heat - on their happiness and their health - are helping to swell caravan holiday home sales in England, according to a major holiday parks group. Park Holidays UK says that an increasing number of buyers are couples living abroad who have decided that a low-cost base in Britain makes for an ideal lifestyle combination. It provides an escape from soaring summer temperatures in mainland Europe, gives access to NHS treatment in the UK, and helps maintain closer links with family and friends. Now the company, which owns 22 coastal parks in Southern England, is responding to demand by holding a series of "welcome home" seminars in Mediterranean resorts. The first, in Punta Prima on the Costa Blanca last Friday (17 June), drew a large audience of

expats keen to discover how a UK caravan holiday home could give them the best of both worlds. According to Park Holidays UK director Tony Clish, many people say they find that the dream of living abroad can have occasional nightmarish moments, especially in summer: "Relentless heat doesn't suit everyone, and especially some more elderly people who find themselves forced to spend large amounts of time indoors in order to stay comfortable," he said. "A second home in the UK means that they can enjoy less ferocious summers in a more gentle environment, but still benefit from southern Europe's warmer springs and autumns," added Tony. Health issues, he reports, are also behind the boom in expat holiday home sales: "Those with medical conditions often say they find it easier to talk with a British doctor when they need help, and prefer to receive treatment in a more familiar environment. "A base in Britain means they can register with a local GP practice, and return visits can be made for regular check-ups, or at short notice if there is an emergency," Tony points out. But one of the most compelling reasons often given by buyers, he said, is that they miss regular contact with friends and family -

and especially fast-growing grandchildren. Modern two and three bedroom caravan holiday homes at Park Holidays UK, says Tony, start from as little as ÂŁ10,000 complete. However, he states, it's not just the low initial outlay which makes the case so convincingly for such properties. Each home comes fully equipped and furnished, and there is no council tax to pay. Neither will there be any of the high and often unexpected maintenance bills which come brick-built properties, and no gardening to attend to or to pay someone else to maintain. There is also the opportunity for expat owners to earn a second income by sub-letting the home during the weeks when they are abroad, with all arrangements taken care of by Park Holidays UK. "Cutting yourself off entirely from Britain to live abroad is a drastic step - but we are offering an affordable exit route whenever the need for a cooling off period arises!" said Tony. More information about the group's parks is available from www.ParkHolidaysUK.com 11

Kawasaki’s Successful Return to Demopark 2011 awasaki returned to the Demopark Show in Eisenach, Germany, for the first time in ten years to showcase their FJ-D and TJ53E Engines which have just come on to the market.

K

Demopark, the largest European open air show dedicated to the turfcare and grounds-care industries attracted 35,000 visitors across the three day event and Horst Britze, Kawasaki’s OEM Regional Sales Manager, commented “It was good to be back at Demopark, it was the perfect platform to demonstrate our new Engines to the European market. The FJ180D received a lot of interest from distributors, dealers and OEMs because of the new technology we’ve developed to achieve the lowest vibration levels for this Engine class.” The air cooled 4-stroke horizontal shaft FJ-D series have been designed to give the best performance even

in the most demanding conditions. The FJ180D offers a maximum torque of 11.7Nm at 2800rpm and the FJ220D has a maximum torque of 14.0Nm at 2800rpm, both are fitted with an internally vented carburetor for clean air flow which enhances performance and durability. The TJ53E Engine also attracted attention as it easily meets all EU, USA and Japan emission regulations without the need for a catalytic converter. The lightweight and compact Engine has a dry weight of 4.5kg but is still designed for exceptional performance with a maximum torque of 3.0Nm at 5000rpm. 13

In an exciting launch at Saltex, the ATT Infinipower HybridTM will be revealed, pairing the TMSystem with an all new hybrid petrol/electric pedestrian traction unit. Incorporating a 1.5Kw generator coupled to a Honda GX120 engine the traction unit delivers a continuous 48v supply to both the traction drive and cutting cylinders’ DC Brushless motors. The Infinipower HybridTM is the “best in class” hybrid mower and is capable of powering all of the cassettes currently available from the TMSystem. The ATT range is just part of a comprehensive line up of market leading turf machinery brands on offer from the Grass Group. Renovating and improving sportsturf to the highest standards can be achieved with the Dairon Overseeder which rejuvenates the existing soil and turf with scarifying blades before precision seeding and firming the seedbed with its rear roller. From the same stable the Rotadairon ED130 is a unique two in one tool which can be used to dethatch, or with its pto disconnected, as a spiker to aerate and improve drainage. An optional collector makes for a tidy finish. The Progressive mower range has proved highly successful to maintain large turf areas with an exceptional finish, from high presentation parks and open spaces with the TDR Roller Mower to the contour-following Proflex 120, which produces superb results on golf fairways. From clearing up leaves to pulling out thatch and debris, Trilo has the answer with its range of scarifiers, scarifier collectors and vacuum sweepers. Using a vacuum head or high capacity wander hose, the Trilo sweepers offer massive capacity to cope with the biggest leaf and litter workloads this autumn. Packed with innovative products, the Grass Group’s stand XCXX is a must-see at Saltex.

John Deere shows new mowers at IOG SALTEX 2011 John Deere’s new walk-behind greens mower and wide area front rotary mower will both be featured on the company’s stand at IOG SALTEX 2011 in September (stand no. T42). The SL Series PrecisionCut walk-behind greens mowers have been designed to deliver a top quality finish on golf courses, tennis courts, cricket squares, bowling greens and other fine turf areas. The mowers feature low noise and vibration levels, a powerful 4hp petrol engine and easy bedknife-to-reel adjustment. The 180SL, 220SL and 260SL replace the previous C Series models, and feature a standard 11 blade, 127mm (5in) diameter reel with true cutting widths of 46, 56 and 66cm (18, 22 and 26in) respectively. The mowers employ a fixed-head version of the patented SpeedLink technology now incorporated on the cutting units of all John Deere PrecisionCut machines. This innovative design allows height of cut adjustments to be made much more quickly and easily, from just one side of the mower. In addition, a new patented front roller bracket makes it equally simple to change the front roller when required. An exciting, innovative play area will provide your youngest of visitors with a fun, safe and social space to make friends and release all their energy! There are, however, points to consider when purchasing play equipment for public use. All kit needs to be fully accredited for purpose, and long guarantees are key. For a sustainable play space metal items are a durable choice. They are more hard wearing than wooden constructions, able to cope better with misuse and require less maintenance. They can also blend well into any surrounding, with many items designed to appear transparent, able to fit in to a rural setting.

Safety is vital, and surfacing is an essential component in any play area. This addition needn’t be expensive, nor an eyesore. There are many options available. Loose bark is a natural, aesthetically pleasing cushion fall, and sand can be used as both safety surfacing and as added play value. Rubber grass mat can also be installed, in such a way that grass grows through the surfacing, creating a natural, seamless appearance under the play equipment. Regular maintenance should also be considered, for the longevity of your equipment and the safety of the children. Many play companies offer a maintenance service, saving

Charterhouse to wow Saltex with stunning launches Stand Number - U22

The renowned Verti-Drain decompactor range will be enhanced with the addition of the new 1513 model, a very fast, lightweight machine which can work to 150mm (6in) deep. Working width is 1.3m the 1513 is belt driven from each side and can be pto powered from a 20hp plus tractor or driven by the new Redexim Carrier, a multi-function tool carrier designed to carry a variety of hard working implements.

(48in) working width for increased productivity, and depending on ground conditions can work to 40mm (1.6in). Purchasers of the Turf Tidy 3000 may wonder how they ever managed without it. This machine can dethatch, flail cut and sweep, using a fully floating cutting head that follows ground contours and a unique turbo fan ensuring clean and even pick-up. Working width of 1.8m (70in) offers a high work rate without demanding a large tractor, while the large hopper has hydraulic tipping to 2.17m (85in). While these new machines may well steal the show, there are plenty of other highlights on Charterhouse’s stand U22, from overseeders to rejuvenate hard working turf to the most advanced range of synthetic turf maintenance equipment on the market today.

New ride-on sits alongside tractors from TYM Stand Number - DAA41B Powered by its own 35hp Briggs and Stratton engine driving via a hydrostatic transmission, the Redexim Carrier can adapt a range of Charterhouse tractor-powered implements for high output pedestrian use, working where a light footprint is needed or access is limited.

A new name and new mower concept will make its debut at Saltex with the launch of the Richmond Wisconsin 3600 ride on mower. Richmonds Groundcare is a sister company of TYM Tractors UK and is renowned for offering top quality turfcare and forestry equipment solutions.

Demonstrating the incredible versatility of the Verti-Drain design, the Charterhouse display will include the latest 2220, which offers high workrates with its fast working speed and 2m width, and the 2216 which can decompact to 23cm (9in) for the ultimate in deep aeration and shattering throughout the sub-surface layer. Both machines will also accept a 1 inch diameter tine.

The Richmond Wisconsin 3600 is truly a ride-on for all seasons – an enclosed tunnel between the wheels directs clippings from the steel rotary deck straight into the collector, giving superb results without blocking in long and wet grass. Implements such as brushes and snow blades can be run from a hydraulic power pack, extending the use of the power unit right through the year.

Encouraging healthy turf growth by verticutting is a highly effective technique, and the Verti-Cut 1200 increases the range of power unit options open to the greenkeeper. It can be equipped with a powerful and reliable 5.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine for towing behind a utility vehicle or powered from a tractor PTO. The Verti-Cut 1200 offers a 1.2m

Flagship of the TYM tractors range and cutting a real dash on the company’s Saltex stand, the 100hp T1003 has the muscle to tackle tasks from gang mowing to hedge and verge trimming and handling the meatiest aerator or decompacter. It’s the ideal high power tractor for racecourses, local authorities or contractors, offering straightforward

operation and maintenance coupled with ‘big tractor’ comfort and styling. TYM offers a tractor for every groundcare need. For loading duties and trailer work or to drive a big mower and cover the acres in parks or open spaces, the 58hp T603 offers plenty of power. Yet it is easy to manoeuvre around the yard or when loading materials, featuring a 24x24 speed powershuttle transmission. With its spacious cab, the T603 really is a year round tractor, offering creature comforts including heating/ air conditioning and a radio. Compact tractors also offer a generous specification: the 43hp T433 has an all weather cab, 12x12 synchro shuttle transmission and independent 540rpm pto. A great all rounder with its optional loader and backhoe, the T433 is also light enough to use on golf greens, and offers 1300kg of lift capacity to easily handle renovation and maintenance implements. With its 35hp Mitsubishi engine, the T353 is a reliable power unit, with independent PTO and a choice of 12x12 synchro shuttle or three-range hydrostatic transmission for maximum versatility. Compact and easy to use, the T353 has a generous 1200kg lift capacity. The T273 is an ideal lightweight tractor to use on golf greens, or as a workhorse in restricted areas and in nurseries, offering 27hp to operate the optional backhoe and QuickDetach front loader. The mid-PTO unit makes it easy to power additional implements such as the mid-mount mower, while two-speed hydrostatic transmission makes for easy operation. At Saltex TYM Tractors and Richmond Groundcare will display the power to meet a wide range of groundcare needs.
