Free-weight training can be an intimidating prospect to many gym-goers across all skill levels. With so many exercises, variations, and considerations, how does one know where to start? Sure, you can look up videos on YouTube, follow some fitness influencer on Instagram, or even ask someone you see at the gym, but then you find yourself presented with another problem–why am I doing this exercise? That’s when the PT program can step in and help. When faced with all of the questions that come with proper and consistent lifting, each of the nationally certified Personal Trainers on staff at the Student Recreation Center can offer support and knowledge to maximize the efficiency of your time spent working out. All trainers have spent countless hours researching different fields of exercise science to help anyone on their fitness journey, regardless of where they may be. So, what is it like to work with our trainers? While every trainer’s approach to fitness is unique, there are a number of key concepts that connect back to the Fitness Department’s main goal of establishing a rewarding fitness plan for each and every client we work with. First and foremost, trainers and clients work with each other to create realistic and attainable goals; while this might seem like an obvious step, the significance of visualizing attainable goals does a lot to help kickstart the positive mindset that is pivotal to progress. Once those goals are established, the trainer and client then go on to create a plan that incorporates all of the experiences, skills, and considerations that both trainer and client bring to each unique training package. It is here that each of the individual strengths of all of our trainers begin to reveal themselves. While each trainer is more than capable of creating and maintaining a plan that can accommodate any imaginable client, the true strength of the Fitness Department comes from the incredibly varied pool of knowledge that each trainer carries with them. Lessons learned from strength training, hypertrophy training, athletic conditioning, even bodybuilding; all the collective experience informs our trainers how to best create a plan that suits every client’s specific needs and goals. From this point on, all that’s left to do is the work itself. For an hour, the trainer’s full attention is dedicated to the client, helping with form, answering questions, and ensuring that progress is being made towards the aforementioned goals.

The best way to get started on your fitness journey with any one of the amazing trainers we have on staff is to fill out the Initial Consultation Request form located on the Personal Training section of the SRC website.
