SILVER PARTNERS

Dear Players and Sponsors, Thank you for joining us today in support of the golfing facilities and programs at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. It is only through the generous contributions of your time and financial support that we come together to enjoy a game of golf and provide support for the many needs of the course and clubhouse. I’ll invite you to join us in the near future to celebrate the “burning of the mortgage.” as we have paid the debt on the golf course. We are still about $2 million in debt for the Carol Johnson Clubhouse and use naming opportunities on the course and in the clubhouse to help raise funds to retire the debt. If you are interested in making a donation or taking advantage of a naming opportunity, contact Liz McFarlane, associate director for University Development, at 919.513.7506. The gift bag of items each golfer receives today represents a value of over $30 to show our appreciation. Enjoy the day! Sincerely,

Dan Adams, Ed. D. Associate Vice Chancellor, Campus Enterprises NC State University President, Centennial Development, LLC

GOLF COURSE DESIGN FEATURES The Lonnie Poole Golf Course was designed by Arnold Palmer and the design team at Arnold Palmer Design Company (including Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson, both NC State graduates) and is considered an outstanding public golf course in the Carolinas and a top collegiate golf course in the United States. The course has unique features that set it apart from other courses in the region. It represents the evolution in golf course architecture toward sustainability by fitting into and protecting the natural environment, leaning heavily on traditional Scottish designs while accommodating the natural landscape. The Design. The Arnold Palmer Design group used features in the existing landscape as the primary cues for their design. Located on 250 acres, the golf course routing is dictated by large elevation changes. It meanders around large buffer areas that were left in place to protect streams and wetlands that are in the Neuse River watershed. The buffers provide protected habitat for wildlife and native plant species.

The Grasses. The course has well-known turfgrass species at its heart: 419 bermudagrass on the fairways and an A1/A4 creeping bentgrass mix on the greens. The tee boxes are bermudagrass in full-sun exposure and zion or zorro zoysia grass in the shade. The bunkers are outlined with El Toro, zion or zorro zoysia grass to provide visual definition and low maintenance edges. The roughs are different...and a difficult place for errant shots. A mixture of four fine fescue species are in place throughout the golf course. Wild grasses, Little Bluestem and Broomsedge, have been transplanted into the fescue in localized pockets that will expand over time. The roughs will evolve into a mix of these cool- and warm-season grasses that are adapted to the North Carolina environment and will have low resource and maintenance requirements. The rough areas establish a color contrast with the turfgrasses on the fairways and tees. In summer months, the mature fescue in the rough are dominated by tans and browns compared to the vivid greens of bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. The reverse is true in winter, when roughs are green and dormant, bermudagrass and zoysiagrass will be tan. The Bunkers. One of the most distinct trademarks of the golf course is the bunker design, with their irregular shapes and jagged edges, as geometric shapes are rarely seen in natural landscapes. Islands and peninsulas with fine fescues intersect and blend with the roughs. Shots landing in sand provide easier recovery than in the thick fescue, which often will requires a drop and an extra stroke. The bunkers were completely replaced in 2014. Difficulty. This is an Audubon Signature golf course that is at the forefront of its time. Make no mistake, though, The Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State University is designed and built to be a championship golf course. Multiple tees allow anyone to enjoy the course, but every player will recognize the challenge it presents. Audubon Certification. In 2013, the course passed strict sustainability standards and became a certified Audubon International Signature Golf Sanctuary and member of the organization’s Signature Program. With this certification, our course represents the evolution in golf course architecture toward sustainability. It both fits into and protects the natural environment. The Arnold Palmer Design group used nature as its primary cue for the design of this 250-acre course; Raleigh’s large elevation changes dictate the course routing, which meanders around large buffer areas, left in place to protect natural streams and wetlands.
