WE FEED THE PACK

Welcome to NC State. One of the most important parts of your experience here will be what you choose to eat, and we are excited to offer you award-winning options that are convenient, fresh, diverse and delicious. We have more than 40 dining locations across campus, all of which accept some form of your meal plan. From traditional dining halls to a mix of restaurants, cafés and convenience stores, our program is designed to meet the unique needs and tastes of our student body. Throughout the “Locations” section of this guide, look for icons that show you how to eat using your meal plan, as well as other forms of accepted payment. This book will serve as a guide to help you select your meal plan and familiarize you with our locations and offerings. Make your selection before you arrive on campus this fall by completing the form in the back of this book or by visiting dining.ncsu.edu. We also recommend you download NC State’s On Campus App to keep hours of operation and menu information at your fingertips.

DINING HALLS Our three all-you-care-to-eat dining hall locations are community hubs for students living on campus. With a single dining hall swipe, you can eat as much or as little as you like, meet for group projects over a cone of Howling Cow or hang out between classes with a cup of coffee in our lounge and entertainment space at Fountain. We also host themed lunches and dinners throughout the year with special menus to keep your taste buds satisfied.

ALLACCESS PASS

The Dining Hall, Flex and Flex Plus plans come with an all-access pass to our dining halls. With these plans, you can come and go when you’re hungry and enjoy a full meal or light snack as often as you like throughout the semester.

Our culinary team provides you with an extensive selection of homestyle entrées and sides, fresh salads and fruit, custom-made wraps, hot grill items and more. Menus change daily, and we offer weekly specials ranging from made-to-order sauté dishes to global favorites. On the go? Try Pack&Go! Our dining hall take-out program allows you to fill a reusable, recyclable container with your favorite menu items and take it with you. There’s no rush to return the container; bring it back to us when you’re finished, and we’ll hand you a clean one or a token for your next take-out meal.

HEALTH + WELLNESS We place a special emphasis on fresh foods and wellness to help you pursue a healthier lifestyle that can be embraced long after your time at NC State. This includes nutrition education, healthy food choices, effective and informative food labeling and wellness activities. Our nutrition team is here to make sure you have a fresh and healthy experience when you eat with the Pack. Receive nutrition updates, health and wellness tips, recipes, prizes and more by following @NCStateDining on Instagram and Twitter.

NUTRITION KIOSKS

Dining halls and many restaurants on campus provide nutrition kiosks. Here you can find calories and ingredient lists, sort current menus by specific allergens and easily find vegan and vegetarian options.

ON CAMPUS APP

The On Campus App is your guide to life on campus and also includes the hours of operation, menus and nutrition information for our NC State Dining locations. It’s a must-download as soon as you arrive on campus. It’s available on the App Store and Google Play.

SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS Many of our students have special dietary needs, such as allergies, intolerances and dietary preferences. Our team is dedicated to meeting those nutritional needs by providing nutrition resources, education and awareness across campus.

ALLERGIES + INTOLERANCES

NC State Dining is recognized nationally for our work to ensure students with food allergies and intolerances can confidently dine on campus. We mark the eight major food allergens (gluten/wheat, dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts and soy) in all of our dining locations. If you have food allergies or intolerances, view the Food Allergy Guide at go.ncsu.edu/allergy-guide, connect with the NC State safe eats allergy support group on Instagram @ncsu_safeeats and schedule a free consultation with our nutrition team at 919.515.5462 or wellfedwolfpack@ncsu.edu.

Fish + Shellfish

Gluten + Wheat

Peanuts + Tree Nuts

VEGAN + VEGETARIAN

We offer a wide array of tasty vegan and vegetarian options during every meal at the dining halls and at many of the campus restaurants. These options are marked with a vegan or vegetarian icon.

PORK-FREE DIET

For students following a pork-free diet, we identify recipes that contain any pork products and mark them with the pink pork icon. We also have dedicated redhandled pans at the dining halls that are used only for non-pork products to avoid cross contamination.

WOLF APPROVED

Choosing healthy food on campus is easier than ever. Look for the Wolf Approved paw print icon across campus to help you identify healthy menu items and snacks.

SUSTAINABILITY NC State Dining is proud to be a contributing partner in the effort to achieve the university’s overall sustainability goal to conserve energy, use resources wisely and reduce our carbon footprint. Check out a few of the ways we work to make going green part of being red.

COMPOSTING INITIATIVE

We began a composting initiative at our dining halls in August 2010 and at One Earth in Talley Student Union in 2014. The initiative became a reality when an audit by Waste Reduction and Recycling found that 70% of waste generated by Fountain Dining Hall was compostable. In 2018, Talley Student Union collected 100.57 tons of compost to send to the onsite compost facility that helps complete the loop of the food eaten on campus. The composting initiative has helped NC State decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills.

RECYCLED COOKING OIL

We work with GreaseCycle to collect and recycle oil waste from our dining locations (9742.5 gallons in 2019). The organic waste is converted into biodiesel fuel and composting soil. Not only is the oil being put to good use, but it is collected at no cost to us, saving thousands of dollars each year.

DINING HALL TAKE OUT

Pack&Go features a reusable and recyclable take out container that can be used in our dining halls in exchange for a meal credit. Since March 2009, this program has diverted more than 208,500 styrofoam to-go containers from the landfill.

16 | sustainability locations

AGROECOLOGY EDUCATION FARM This on-campus farm provides hands-on education regarding sustainable agriculture to students, staff, faculty and the community. One of the Agroecology Farm’s main goals is to produce fresh and healthy food items to be served at on-campus dining locations, extending sustainable agriculture education back to campus.

Through our partnership with the farm, NC State Dining has provided funding for a new post-harvest facility, as well as a hoop house, which extends the growing season and provides nearly year-round vegetable production. In 2019, the six-acre site produced 15,373 pounds of crops for the dining program. For more information and to see what’s growing on the farm, visit agroecologyfarm.ncsu.edu.

ON-CAMPUS PARTNERSHIPS

We have created several partnerships with student organizations and professors across campus, including the NC State Sustainability Stewards and Zero Waste Wolves, to align our sustainability goals and help us achieve them. Through a partnership with the Office of Sustainability, NC State Dining began reducing plastic waste by eliminating single-use plastic bags at the Atrium Food Court and C-Stores on campus. Reusable bags are now available for purchase at these locations, diverting more than 294,000 plastic bags from the landfill each year.

MY ROOTS ARE AT NC STATE

This program connects NC State Dining with North Carolina growers, manufacturers, processors and producers to increase our ability to purchase locally and highlight the wealth of products grown and produced in our state. It also gives us an opportunity to share stories of NC State alumni working for these companies and how their work positively supports our efforts to provide the best food possible for our students, faculty and staff.

PAYING WITH YOUR MEAL PLAN DINING HALL SWIPES DINING HALLS

Just one card swipe at our dining halls, and you can eat as much or as little as you like. No need to think about how much you are spending here! Enjoy a variety of entrées, sides, soups, salads, fruit and dessert, including Howling Cow soft-serve ice cream, all for one meal swipe.

MEAL CREDITS

RESTAURANTS, CAFÉS AND DINING HALL PACK&GO Meal credits enable you to purchase a meal totaling a specific amount at one of our restaurants or cafés. Meal credits can also be used to purchase a Pack&Go dining hall take out meal. Meal credits vary by location and meal period. If you stay under the rate being charged for that meal, you won’t owe anything more. If you choose to spend more, you can make up the difference with dining dollars or another form of accepted payment. Only one meal credit can be used per meal period, and there is a limit of two bottled beverages per meal credit transaction at restaurants and cafés. MEAL PERIODS We offer 35 meal periods throughout the week, and the meal plan week resets every Saturday morning. Use dining dollars to supplement your plan if you use more than the allotted meal swipes per meal period.

Dining dollars are flexible funds that supplement your meal plan. Use dining dollars to: » Cover the difference if you spend more than the allotted meal credit rate at a campus restaurant or café. » Buy extra meals or snacks if a meal has already been used during a meal period or if you run out of weekly meal credits. » Make purchases at our convenience stores and vending machines. Dining dollars roll over from fall to spring, and additional dining dollars can be purchased throughout the semester if you run out. Dining dollars are non-refundable and will expire at the end of the spring semester.

In addition to our meal plans, campus dining locations also accept All Campus, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. 19 | meal locations plans

HOW DO I CHOOSE A MEAL PLAN? STUDENTS LIVING ON CAMPUS: I LOVE VARIETY AND WANT TO EAT AT A VARIETY OF LOCATIONS ON CAMPUS. Consider the Flex or Flex Plus plan. These will give you flexibility between the dining halls and the restaurants in one convenient plan.

I PLAN TO EAT MOST OF MY MEALS AT THE DINING HALL. Consider for the Dining Hall plan. Plus, you’ll save a little money, too.

STUDENTS LIVING IN ON- OR OFF-CAMPUS APARTMENTS: I DON’T WANT TO COOK AND PLAN TO BE ON CAMPUS A LOT. The Flex plan best fits your needs. Use it for meals or snacks, and you can even grab a togo meal before heading back to your house or apartment.

I WANT TO EAT ON CAMPUS BUT NOT COMMIT TO A CERTAIN NUMBER PER WEEK. Consider the Block 170 or Commuter/ Apartment plan. The Block 170 averages out to 10 meals a week, and the Commuter plan will provide 5-7 depending on how you spend your funds.

STUDENTS LIVING IN GREEK HOUSING: I PLAN TO JOIN A FRATERNITY OR SORORITY THAT HAS A MEAL PLAN DURING MY FIRST YEAR.. If the chapter offers a meal plan that serves a minimum of 10 hot meals a week, then you may be exempt from a campus meal plan. That said, we recommend the Commuter/Apartment plan as a supplement when you are on campus. Visit our website for more information.

WORK WITH US Did you know? Students who work an average of 5 to 15 hours a week are more confident, possess better time management skills, and do better academically and socially. They also benefit from a higher level of independence and personal satisfaction that comes from earning their own paycheck. Join the NC State Dining team and learn skills such as teamwork, cash management, customer relations, cooking, management, leadership and more. We schedule around your classes because academics always come first. Earn between $8.75 and $13 an hour depending on your position and years of service, plus you may be eligible to receive one free meal with every shift worked! For a complete listing of positions and to learn about our culinary bootcamp opportunity, visit go.ncsu.edu/work-for-dining. Note: International students are limited to working a maximum of 20 hours per week.
