Cherry Blossom season is by far the prettiest time of the year in Japan. As it happens in the beginning part of Spring, in Japan, mother nature shows us the beauty, for a brief time, both winter & spring does co-exist with one another. Catchin’ a glimpse of Mt. Fuji & the cherry blossoms is definitely a Kodak moment. This month’s Bugle cover is one of the many shots of that majestic mountain. If you are an enthusiastic photographer yearning to capture a shot like this, the MWR Outdoor Recreations has the tour for you. Check it out!

Tip of the Month Head Down • Eyes on the Ball Whack! Arghhh… Topped it again… I have to keep my head down! Technology and science through Video, Motion Analysis, Bio-Mechanics, etc has evolved and helped us learn a lot of new things about the golf swing and at the same debunked some old beliefs, for example the idea to keep your head down was considered timeless and classic, but today it is considered terrible advice, which you wouldn’t even consider telling your enemy, because there is no way you could despise someone that much. Keeping your head locked down puts too much pressure and tension in the neck, shoulders and arms, which restricts your turn, causes a chicken wing, limits weight transfer and promotes scooping, all of which restricts the speed and direction of your shot in a negative manner. In other words, if you want to hit it inconsistently, short and sideways, then continue working on keeping your head down! However, if you want to have a chance to hit it straight and far, try keeping your eye on the ball, which is actually great advice, but only if you actually allow your head to rotate during the impact zone and watch the ball fly, because then your body is releasing the built up energy and you get a wider arc and more accurate shots with greater distance and less dependence on smaller muscles will also help you become more consistent. If you look at slow motion video of professional golfers, it may appear that most players, but not Annika Sorenstam or David Duval, keep their head down during impact, so, you might be tempted to try to do the same, however please understand there is real danger in analyzing still images of a fast moving motion, which is why it is much better to look at moving images of what the head does prior, during and especially after impact and then you will realize there is actually quite a bit of movement, especially with the driver and if you then focus on the knees, hips and shoulders and how they rotate independently from each other, yet completely in sync, then you will start to learn the true “roll” of the head and how to swing freely. So, to summarize, the head is never completely still, instead it is fairly steady, while the torso, arms and lower body move in a synchronized manner underneath it. You could perhaps compare this to Irish dancers, who keep their head steady, while moving their feet in an incredible manner underneath it. The best way to practice keeping your eye on the ball is to simply watch the ball fly as soon as possible. It is absolutely ok to look up, as long as your head is rotating around the axis of your spine, as opposed to your head coming up, because your body is standing up, and there is one more benefit to keeping your eye on the ball that’s worth mentioning… It makes the game cheaper, because be honest now, how many times have you kept your head down and then had to ask your friend if they saw where your ball went, because you lost it? If you look at your ball fly, you’ll always be able to find it again and over a lifetime that could up to saving some big bucks. Good luck!

April is the Month of the Military Child Challenges and Rewards of being a Military Teen! You have never been to a foreign country and you just found out that you will be moving to Japan for your parents’ work. Excited? Nervous? Scared? Don’t worry, you are not the only one. “Initially my dad kept on joking with us – Hey, how would you feel if we moved to Japan? Of course, I hated the idea. I have never been a fan of change. I loved staying grounded in one place and with my friends because they were there for me since I was very young. When his (my dad’s) dream became a reality it kind of became my nightmare a little bit. The whole moving process was so horrible and I was so nervous,” Angelica Bowlin, Zama High School Senior. Does this sound familiar? Angelica didn’t know what to expect when coming to Camp Zama, especially since she moved in the middle of her junior year. But, the Youth Sponsorship program from the Student-To-Student club came as a blessing. “We visited the Zama High School and I didn’t know I was going to have a student to sponsor me the first couple of days of school. Bianca Draper was the perfect balance of niceness, shyness, everything. Of course, she knew where everything was. She basically made my nerves calm down which made me really, really welcome and warm inside and made me want to do exactly the same thing as her.” Angelica belongs to the Youth Sponsorship Club now which has about 30-40 members and they all paired with the incoming students to help them with the transition, show them where all the cool spots are and make them feel welcomed. Many of these students find their way to the Youth Center, which is available to students grades 7-12. Geralde Deguzman, Zama Middle School 7th grader comes to the Youth Center to do homework and relax in the music room after school. “There’s more research available here to do homework. The staff will help you here. One time I needed help and they were great. I even got the higher grade,” Geralde said. Of course, the free food always helps – “After school, we are all hungry and you just go to the kitchen here and eat. There are salads, fruit, muffins, milk, and chocolate milk and sometimes there are specialty things like lasagna.” Geralde also joined one of the recent Youth Center trips to Shigakogen. The trips are a way to learn about the culture and a way to enjoy and have fun while in Japan. “In the summertime we take them rafting and different locations around Japan. All the trips are open to the students grades 7-12. The trips are available to students at a minimal cost,” said Robert Chance, Youth Center Acting Director. Ryan Grubbs, Zama High School Junior student, says he didn’t used to go to Youth Centers at other military installations but the one at Camp Zama is much better because of the great staff that is relatable and always friendly. “When I first got here I knew a few kids from Virginia where I lived before and the first thing that they did was bring me to the Teen Center. This was everyone’s go-to spot,” Ryan said. He also volunteers and appreciates that there is volunteer information readily available at the Youth Center. Here, students can participate in many clubs including a Keystone Club, Cooking, Photography and Art Clubs. Through a community project oriented Keystone Club, students have an opportunity to travel all around Japan and the world, including Iwakuni, Hiroshima, Dallas and Morocco. Whatever interest you may have, the Youth Center probably has a club for it. It’s a great place to make friendships that will help with the challenge of the transition to the new community. Challenge accepted, challenge conquered!

Did you know you can use baby wipes to clean the interior of your vehicle? Of course one company may work better than another but either way this would still be cheaper than buying the “big name” companies that say theirs are the best for interiors. NOTE: For leather interior/seats you may want to try on a small area in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it does not damage the leather.
