INTRODUCTION This year is the 55th year of Salone del Mobile.Milano and from all accounts, we anticipate a vintage year. The fair, which opens on Tuesday 12th, will feature 300,000 exhibitors and collateral events dedicated to technology in the kitchen and bathroom. One not to be missed is SaloneSatellite, in Hall 13 and 15, which has the exciting theme of ‘new materials, new design.’ This year’s Triennale will feature a new exhibition, ‘STANZE (Rooms) Novel Living Concepts,’ which is curated by Beppe Finessi. It showcases interior architecture as interpreted by 11 leading architects who have taken on the most meaningful and profound issues of contemporary society including contributions from Alessandro Mendini, Fabio Novembre and Elisabetta Terragni to name a few. In our Milan pack we have included highlight destinations during the week. There are some unusual offerings you might like to take up, from a NIKE fitness run in collaboration with Monocle at 7:15AM Tuesday and Thursday at the NIKE Space, 15 Via Orobia. To follow, grab an early morning flat white and homemade bread at Makers & Bakers, a unique space curated by Ambra Medda in collaboration with Airbnb with 25 designers inspired by sharing around a communal table. Tom Dixon continues the theme at his restaurant inspired by the elements, Fire, Water, Earth and Air at Via Enrico Besana with Ceaserstone and four working kitchens. Finally, end the day at the Hem Ice Cream Social with a stracciatella cone inspired by Max Lamb’s latest stools for Hem, at Via Barese 12. For those of you who have not had the opportunity of visiting The Prada Foundation (open: 10AM 9PM, closed Tuesdays, location: Largo Isarco 2), don’t miss it since it opened after Salone last year. With only a few days to go, the weather will be a mix of sunshine and showers. We look forward to seeing all of you soon and hope you have an inspiring week in Milan. Judy Dobias Managing Director

USING UBER IN MILAN We have been told by our friends from Milan that Uber drivers have asked passengers to sit in the front seat, so it looks less like a taxi. This is to avoid taxi driver protests against Uber drivers.
GETTING AROUND With so many people heading to Milan airports, if you arrive at Linate from Tuesday onwards, you might want to book a car to collect you and our suggested company is AUTONOLO MILANO (www.autonolomilano.it) Please contact Carlo or Anna on +39 02 65 52 732 or +39 02 65 75 777 and do mention Camron if you book. You can also email the company at autonolomilano@autonolomilano.it. Arriving at Malpensa, take the train directly into the city and then a taxi. Additionally, you might want to book them for half a day to take you around the showrooms to maximise your time. Do not take a taxi to the Fiera – take the metro. In the evening, taxis are hard to find and they don’t stop if you wave them down, so have the numbers +39 02 8585, +39 02 6767, +39 02 5353, +39 02 8383 and +39 02 3100) handy. REMEMBER - The meter will start running as soon as the driver gets the call!
MEETING POINTS If you want to meet people, there are several key places that we would suggest listed below. These are away from design destinations and are accessible. Some of our recommendations include: The new Prada Foundation Cafe: Bar Luce (Largo Isarco 2) and one of Milan’s oldest and finest pastry shops, Pasticceria Marchesi (Via Monte Napoleone 9). For a serious breakfast meeting or aperitivo, head to The Four Seasons or Park Hyatt. For central Milan, the best meeting point is Café Peck, via Victor Hugo 4 and is very close to the Duomo. Adjacent to Rossana Orlandi is the magical Marta (formally known as Pane e Acqua) - ideal for lunch, opens at 11AM.

Showcasing a range of extremely high quality products and services, the Salone del Mobile.Milano is yet again the must-see sectoral appointment with the very latest products and solutions, reaffirming Milan’s role as the capital of design. A great business opportunity that – last year alone – generated revenue worth 221 million euros. This year is completely sold out yet again, with 207,000 m2 of net exhibition space and 2,310 exhibitors (30% of them foreign companies), 650 of them SaloneSatellite designers, reaffirming its position as the leading forum for ideas, creativity, innovation and technology for businesses, operators and visitors, showcasing the latest home living styles through advanced design trends. President Roberto Snaidero had this to say: “The 55th edition will be a huge international draw, with 70% of the operators coming from over 160 countries and a wide range of top commercial offerings from the very best companies on the Italian and foreign markets, combined with culture and product culture through our collateral events. Internationalisation and innovation are the key drivers of this important edition. In particular, companies taking part in the Salone affirm that 63% of revenue is generated by exports, while 67% of them have made substantial investments in innovating machinery, equipment and software; research and development, especially within the companies themselves, and in the design of new products.” “The Salone del Mobile is one of Italy’s most important appointments. A showcase of what the entire home furnishing chain has to offer international markets in terms of product quality and innovation”, said Deputy Minister of Economic Development Carlo Calenda. “This is why the Salone was immediately incorporated into the Italian Trade Agency ICE trade fair enhancement plan, and its contributions will continue into the future. The furniture sector is showing signs of recovery, with exports looking likely to rise by around 6% in 2015. There are positive signals from the domestic market too, thanks also in part to the government’s ongoing interest over the last few years. The latest stability law confirmed its commitments, with the renewal of the tax bonus for new furniture and extended benefits for young couples. As well as supporting domestic demand, the ministry and ICE have set up promotional plans to promote our top products abroad, thanks to funds made available under the Extraordinary Plan for Made in Italy.” “The 55th edition of the Salone del Mobile occurs during a special year for our city. ‘Design after Design’, the International Exhibition of the Triennale di Milano, back after a twenty-year lull, will open just a few days earlier. This means that we are gearing up for an extraordinary Design Spring, with a combination of events in which we believe and which will bring Milan to the forefront of international attention yet again. The Salone del Mobile, along with the FuoriSalone, will enliven the streets and squares of the city, involving hundreds of thousands of fans, tourists, professionals and designers, making the week of the 12th to 17th April a great party for all”, said Milan Mayor Giuliano Pisapia.

The theme of the Brera Design District 2016 edition is “Designing is Listening”. As in the previous years the theme generates from a debate with an artist. If in the last edition Patrick Tuttofuoco – through a reflection on identity – was the one who led us to outline the theme “Project Shape Identity”, this year the work of Chiara Luzzana and the debate with Paolo Ferrarini allowed us to identify the act of listening as a metaphor, the founding principle of a design and creative project. The theme “Designing is Listening” starts from the awareness that the rigour of music composition and that of design thinking are particularly close to each other. Like music, design starts from listening: listening to functions, materials, objects and spaces. Active listening means interpretation of the world and not merely data collection. Listening to things does not only lead to learning, but also to transformation and then to a natural evolution that guides us towards innovation. “Designing is Listening” also highlights the didactic and educational power of good design. While it is true that a good teacher is someone able to imagine what a person could become even before it happens, a good designer (of any field) can see how the world will be through his work. Thanks to that, research and listening are deeply interconnected.
DESIGN DISTRICTS: BRERA DESIGN DISTRICT 2016 In this perspective, the Lezioni di Design 2016 award (Design lectures award) has been given to Giorgia Lupi, Italian information designer who has been working in New York for many years. Founder of Accurat, Giorgia represents the new generation of designers going beyond the traditional concept of product design focusing on “intangible” issues and giving shape to information and turning it into a story. Through data listening, i.e. data research and analysis, Giorgia Lupi is able to design a view and a vision at the same time. The Brera Design District will also include the exhibition “Dear Data” highlighting the most artistic side of the work of Giorgia Lupi. Dear Data is a “data designing” analogue project in the form of postcards that Giorgia sent her friend Stefanie Posavec (also information designer) for an entire year – one every week – and viceversa. The data listened to and designed during this period were taken from their daily life: how much it had rained, the number and type of phone calls they had received, their food preferences, their networks of friends or the pace of their productivity. Every postcard, sent via ordinary mail, was an experiment of “slow” data transmission – definitely not a mainstream one – that eventually reached its destination.
CLUBHOUSE BRERA FOR MILAN DESIGN WEEK Clubhouse Brera will also be one of the reference sites of the Design Week and the Fuorisalone, as it is perfectly situated into the Brera Design District, thanks to a partnership with them. Geometric shapes, asymmetry, colourfulness and, in particular, unusual colour combinations. These are the characteristics of the Memphis Group, an Italian design and architecture group who had their debut at the Salone del Mobile in 1981. Although the movement only lasted a relatively short time, Memphis left a lasting impact. The forms, use of certain materials and typically Memphis colours have returned to Ventura Lambrate 2016. Within the theme ‘Memphisism’ designers adapt and reinterpret the style and introduce new colours, geometries or patterns to create contemporary designs. Let’s meet the ‘Memphisism’ designers of Ventura Lambrate 2016.

Fabio Novembre’s Intro: Intro is an abstract uterus, an egg-shaped alcove that literally swallows the visitor, to then return them back to the world, reborn and more aware. Fabio Novembre worked on the idea of a bedroom, integrating it into the most perfect and ancestral shape: the egg. The anthropomorphic shapes, a distinguishing marker in the designs of Fabio Novembre, are also found outside the room, where two feminine figures guard the entrance to the space.

Natuzzi immediately accepted the invitation to be a partner in this dreamy, visionary installation. In the words of Pasquale Jr. Natuzzi, Communication and Creative Director of the brand: “Fabio’s project captured my attention immediately. His strong, decisive style had an intense impact on me. Intro represents a virtuosity which allows us to impart on visitors the know-how and craftsmanship that has always distinguished the company”. In fact, Natuzzi will produce the entire installation using, above all, the materials which are used to produce sofas like wood, to create the base of the installation and leather, the main character in this creation. Intro is a complex puzzle of different material, all assembled by hand: thermoformed acrylic panels covering a wooden nesting, giving life to an sloping spherical structure composed of 12 elements.
OTHER EXHIBITIONS: XXI TRIENNALE DI MILANO
WOMEN IN ITALIAN DESIGN (NINTH EDITION) 2 APR 2016 - 19 FEB 2017 In it’s ninth edition at the Triennale Design Museum, this year’s exhibition has been curated by Silvana Annicchiarico and designed by Margherita Palli. The exhibit addresses Italian design in the light of one of the most delicate and most difficult issues. Pondering the question of ‘Design after Design, this exhibit wonders if the new female protagonist is among the main performers as their work can be often characterised as “less assertive, less authoritarian, more spontaneous, more dynamic.”
NEO PREHISTORY - 100 VERBS 2 APRIL TO 12 SEPTEMBER 2016 The exhibition runs through the long road that connects the tools of ancient pre-history to the modern nanotechnologies. It reviews the history of mankind from a general point of view, attempts to ascertain on what basis humanity functions on and ultimately expresses the message of design and its overall importance.
THE MULTICULTURAL METROPOLIS 2 APRIL TO 12 SEPTEMBER 2016 The coexistence of racial and cultural minorities in multi-ethnic societies is often interpreted as a happy circle, characterized by mutual tolerance that would allow each of these to retain their memories and their ancient customs. In fact, this archipelago of ethnic groups is routinely crossed by invasive flows of international product categories, spread by the globalization of markets, in which the memories, the traditions and the faces disappear
BRILLIANT! 2 APR - 12 SET 2016 Containing over 50 Italian jewels, this exhibition showcases the work of masters and skilled artisans. The jewels represent an expression of the high manufacturing capability of the best industrial production, combined with a mix of art, design, fashion and new technologies. The selected jewels are emblematic of the future scenarios of the Italian jewel, defined by: Mirabile Factory, Beauty Daily, Avant Craft, Valuable Technologies and Creativity Collective. The protagonist is the necklace, the most representative jewel of Italian goldsmith.

DA NOI IN
FONDERIE MILANESI
Located in the chic, smart and refined Magna Pars Hotel, Da Noi In features the cuisine of chef Fulvio Siccardi. Homely design items such as old books, two fireplaces and a garden add a warm touch to the modern ambiance.
This rustic restaurant has great atmosphere, offering a relaxing alternative to the buzzing Milanese streets. Our idea of the perfect stop for an aperitivo.

MAIDO (NEW)
LANGOSTERIA 10
Milan’s first Okonomiyaki street food restaurant has opened on via Savona. Their Japanese pancakes offer an oriental alternative to those in need of a culinary switch up.
You’ll find everything from platters to carpaccio, tartare to pasta to fish-centric entrée plates. The sea urchin pasta, when available, is outstanding. Oyster lovers will enjoy the thorough, mostly French, selection.
