INTRODUCTION
As we head towards NYCxDESIGN this year, there seems to be a real optimism. We have certainly noticed many more installations happening in the city, and a lot of international press and designers are planning to attend.
Key things of note this year include Sight Unseen's new OFFSITE fair, which will be held on two floors at 200 Lafayette in Soho and Wallpaper* Handmade making its New York debut with Jaguar. Located in the Meatpacking district, it will feature 40 specially commissioned designs, including Fiona BarrattCampbell, Todd Bracher, Paul Loebach, the Haas Brothers and Suzanne Tick.
Another destination of note is INTRO/NY which will be at 201 Mulberry Street, sponsored by designjunction. WantedDesign gets better and better and is now in its 4th year, located in the Terminal Stores on 11th Avenue. Don't miss out on Industry City in Brooklyn where WantedDesign has teamed up for an 11 day series of events and workshops.
ICFF will open on Saturday as usual at the Javits Convention Center. A special feature this year includes The Good Life - an exhibition and book by Jasper Morrison, working with Lars Muller publishers, that documents the ‘what and how’ of a particular way of seeing, from Morrison's perspective. We have included in this pack our Top Ten (non-Camron clients) as well as maps, restaurants and useful addresses.

NYCxDESIGN is New York City’s official citywide celebration of design. Spanning all disciplines of design, NYCxDESIGN creates a collaborative platform for cultural and commercial opportunities, elevates established and emerging design practices and increases awareness of and appreciation for design by all audiences. Hosted in the world’s design capital, NYCxDESIGN brings together all the disciplines of design, commerce, culture, education, and entertainment with a full, varied program, including exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, launches and open studios. Our inaugural celebration in 2013 featured 350 events by 183 organizers at 190 venues across all of the New York City and included topics from graphic design to architecture, technology and urban design to fashion and product design, interiors to landscape, furniture to design thinking, and more. French Design Connection is returning to the Chambers hotel for the second year and we are delighted that our friend Anne-France Berthelon has curated this with Anna Yudina. Organised by Francesco Pirrello, founder of globe trotting MEET MY PROJECT label, the exhibition is tailored for New York's design-savvy public. It will show a selection of smart, innovative, endearing, ironic and visually arresting objects.
This NYCxDESIGN – one of New York’s coolest design stores – The Future Perfect will be showcasing the Totem collection. Designed by Lindsey Adelman with glass by Nancy Callan, the light sculptures were created in an edition of three unique pieces.

This year at ICFF, Tom Dixon is showcasing their new furniture, lighting and accessories under the theme of the CLUB. The conventional Gentleman’s club is reworked into a contemporary version of the historic British members club
Fans of Jamie Gray have plenty to get excited about this year with his fifth Matter-Made collection debuting at ICFF (including pieces by Jamie himself!) and an exhibition in his Soho showroom by Bec Brittain x Hilda Hellstrom and new pieces by Karl Zahn.

5. Wallpaper* Handmade in New York with Jaguar Following its debut at Milan’s Salone del Mobile, Wallpaper* Handmade in New York has taken their inspiration from British car manufacturer Jaguar. Especially for ICFF,Wallpaper* have commissioned new work from local Brooklyn architects and Design Miami/2012 pavilion designers Snarkitecture. Location: May 16-31 . 6. Street Theater: Times Square Arts
Street Seats, a collection of abandoned chairs found in New York repaired and given a coat of taxi-cab yellow paint, is the basis of a new urban research project called Street Theater. The yellow chairs will be positioned in a plaza where you can sit and take in the spectacle of Times Square. Date: May 16. 11am – 7pm Location: Broadway and 42nd Street
8. The Dutch Masters & Aldo Bakker For his very first solo-exhibition, iconic Dutch designer Aldo Bakker chose to collaborate and present his work with Atelier Courbet in collaboration with master-craftsmen Jan Matthesius, Frank Ottink & Rutger Graas - masters in wood crafting, copper and silversmith and ceramics. 9. Vitsoe Fruit Stand with The Gourmand Vitsoe are joining forces with culinary magazine The Gourmand to recreate a neighbourhood fruit stand in their New York shop. Serving a selection of fruit tarts, teas and homemade sodas alongside back issues of the magazine and a limited edition recipe book; it will be the perfect haven away from the chaos of design week.

ICFF PRESS RELEASES British European Design Group Celebrates 20 Years at the ICFF WHITE PLAINS, NY, MAY 6, 2014 The British European Design Group (BEDG) will mark its 20th straight year of exhibiting at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). In 1994, with its first contingent on the show floor of New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, the BEDG announced its arrival as a force on the global design scene. In the two decades since, BEDG participants have won numerous ICFF Editors Awards. BEDG founder Karin-Beate Phillips says, “Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the BEDG at the ICFF is a very happy occasion. In the last two decades, the market for global design has grown exponentially. With our annual exhibit at the ICFF, we have played a significant role in extending the reach of international design across North America.” GLM senior vice president Kevin O’Keefe says, “In two decades of exhibiting at the ICFF, Karin-Beate Phillips and the participating companies of the BEDG contingent have been instrumental in cementing the ICFF’s position as North America’s primary event for global contemporary design. The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) announces the return of the Philippines Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), after 13-years. The CITEM contingent, Design Philippines, numbers 15 companies deep, guaranteeing the Philippines a significant presence on the floor of New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center during this year’s global market, May 17-20. Designed with a system of hanging metal frames, the CITEM exhibit will show the impressive wealth of products available from its participants. ICFF Power Range: Harmonic Convergence WHITE PLAINS, NY, MARCH 6, 2014 The 26th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), North America’s platform for global design, running May 17-20 at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, is recognized for the power range of products – from accessible to luxury. This year, with the U.S. luxury design market on the upsurge, the ICFF promises to welcome a tidal wave of pent-up market activity to the tune of 200 million USD in new orders*. Yes, it’s economics 101. Think supply and demand, and the timely convergence of exhibitors and attendees. Recent studies by Bain & Company and Ledbury Research indicate the U.S. luxury market is expanding at three times the pace of a stagnant Europe; that it has exceeded the growth rate in China and the Pacific Rim; and that it is expected to be the most important market for luxury for the next five years. With Credit Suisse proclaiming the U.S. is minting millionaires at practically the speed of light – the spawning grounds of 1.7 of the world’s 1.8 new 7-figure incomes over the past 12 months – who’s to argue? Alessi Research Lab
Alessi, founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi, has been able to develop a policy of design excellence which has made it one of the leading internationally renowned Italian Design Factories. It has reconciled its typically industrial needs with its tendency to consider itself as a ‘research laboratory in the field of the applied arts’. More The ‘ALESSI RESEARCH LAB – A selection of recent projects from young designers’ exhibition at WantedDesign 2014 will highlight some of the research and workshops that the company has conducted and developed in collaboration with several designers on an international basis. Each project on display will present a specific topic and the related research developed around it: from the innovation brought into the bar & wine typology by Giulio Iacchetti to the research in the working of metal wire by Pauline Deltour; from the digital design works of Tom Kovac, to the manufacturing of the stainless steel sheet through laser cut and folding shown through the designs by Abi Alice, to nature observation based design by Adam Cornish. Other topics are: a research on LED lighting by Giovanni Alessi Anghini, Gabriele Chiave and Frédéric Gooris; geometry and color explored by matali crasset; the re-interpretation of the historical typology of the wire basket by Pierre Charpin; irony and methaphor shown through a series of small functional objects, the Objets-Bijoux. On display also some of the most recent workshops: the Alessi Metal workshop with the Cranbrook Academy of Art, a workshop with the Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL) and #Concrete In Design, a collaboration with the Italian company Italcementi which shows the continuous interest of Alessi in experimenting also with new material like, in this case, concrete. All projects are presented through a series of selected materials (prototypes, sketches, molds, videos and other) in order to give the public a behind the scenes look of Alessi and their research.

INDUSTRY CITY, BROOKLYN PARTICIPANTS AT INDUSTRY CITY / DESIGN Sebastian Errazuriz presents The Giant Golden Piñata WantedDesign and Industry City invited Sebastian to create an installation piece that could be inaugurated for the opening of NYCxDesign. “I had just reached my first year of working at the new studio in Sunset Park and I wanted to create a piece that could be festive and be part of a celebration. Coming from South America I immediately remembered the classic birthday Piñatas filled with candy that the kids would hit blindfolded. It occurred to me that it would be amazing to build a giant piñata that could be hung between buildings and invite my colleagues and all the young designers to grab some sticks and have a go at it during the party*.” (*May 20th, starting 5pm) Chilean born, New York based artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz at only 28 years of age became the second living South American artist to have work auctioned at Sotheby’s Important Twentieth Century Design. He was selected one of the top emerging international designers by I.D magazine in 2007. He received the title of Chilean Designer of the Year in 2009. In 2011 he was selected for the Compasso d’ Oro.
François Chambard is the owner of UM Project, a Brooklyn-based furniture design company. UM stands for Users and Makers. Borrowing cues from industry and craft, UM Project’s work transcends the qualities of both the handmade and the mass-produced. Traditional techniques and archetypes are transformed for the modern eye and mind, with a special interest in material combination and connections. The Odd Harmonics collection combines different influences that yield a rich and colorful language: mid-century design, Bauhaus-Pop, Memphis, Steampunk. Like other creations by François Chambard, the success of the pieces relies on original design, impeccable execution, the use of rich and honest materials, as well as the emphasis on connections and details.

INDUSTRY CITY, BROOKLYN Wearing Cities by Simo Neri in collaboration with Jun Mizumachi (sound design), Eunhwa Kim (fashion design), Gabrielle Lubtchansky (video) Wearing Cities is a meditation on urban rhythms. Every city has a particular color palette, a unique, recognizable presence. Ordinary urban details that we take for granted enter our consciousness subliminally, and we try to make sense out of this chaos. Focusing on the cities I know best, I have selected features that evoke a sensory geography of place. By deconstructing these visual perceptions and recomposing them in sequential grids, I am declaring a personal “ownership” of these cities. I invited fellow artists ‒ a sound designer, a fashion designer, a videographer ‒ to join me in this project. Jun Mizumachi captures sounds from his environment, and then breaks them down digitally, creating original compositions that express the abstract moods of city life. Eunhwa Kim translates two-dimensional art into a living, three-dimensional, moving form that can be worn as a symbol of belonging. A special wearable theme, “Inside/Outside”, is worn by a random selection of city dwellers and presented in an original video by Gabrielle Lubtchansky.
The American Design Club is pleased to present Field Day—a communal and retail space inside Industry City, developed in collaboration with WantedDesign and launching during NYCxDESIGN, May 10th-20th. Part pop-up, part town hall Field Day aims to support New York’s design community by providing a space in Industry City to relax and learn as well as purchase items designed by America’s best and brightest.
