INTRODUCTION As many of you fly into Milan over the forthcoming week, we felt it opportune to provide you with an overview for 2013 so you can make the most of Salone this year. With so many design weeks taking place all over the world, why is it that we all get on planes and make the pilgrimage to Milan? Without question, the fact that 5,000 journalists are heading into the city is a reflection of the stature of this global design event. The challenge increasingly becomes one of a carefully planned itinerary - how to get into the design destinations, the Fiera, important showroom events, as well as lunches, dinners, parties and the Bar Basso moment. Since it is all about balance and planning, we hope that our transportation tips, restaurant hot spots and updated information will help influence those decisions. It helps that this year, unlike the last two, we will not experience torrential rain, and that the sun promises to shine for some of the week. At the back of this pack, you will also see that we have highlighted key press preview days so you can make the most of getting access as soon as possible. For those of you who spend on average two nights and three days in Milan, we would recommend at least one day at the Fiera (get there as the doors open) – and do not miss Euroluce which alternates with Eurocucina. Additionally while you are there, head to Jean Nouvel’s ‘Project: Office for Living’, as well as Salone Satellite ‘Craftsmanship & Design: together for Industry’. On another day we would suggest taking in the key design districts (these are listed in this pack) while the final day could be allocated to showrooms and installations such as Wallpaper*’s new Handmade at Leclettico, or Marcel Wander’s ambitious exhibition space at Tortona. Do jump on and off one of the buses (with Wi-Fi on board) that Fab.com is organizing on Wednesday and Thursday from MOST to either Ventura Lambrate or Tortona. We have also listed a multitude of apps which you will be able to download from this week. Complete with maps, floor plans and key highlights, these will transform your visit and help you navigate the city. You will also see that we have included some of our favourite places to meet (the new courtyard café at The Magna Pars in Tortona is a real find) – and also in this pack we have included restaurants that you might like to book before you leave. This year we have James Hart as our main concierge person in Milan, so should you have any questions during the week, email him at james.hart@camronpr.com. He can also ensure to direct any specific requests to our Camron team on the ground, in London and New York. We look forward to seeing you! Judy Dobias Managing Director

HOW TO GET TO THE FAIR GETTING AROUND With so many people heading to Milan airports, if you arrive at Linate from Tuesday onwards, you might want to book a car to collect you and our suggested company is AUTONOLO MILANO (www.autonolomilano.it) Please contact Carlo or Anna on +39 02 65 52 732 or +39 02 65 75 777 and do mention Camron if you book. You can also email the company at autonolomilano@autonolomilano.it. Arriving at Malpensa, take the train directly onto the city and then a taxi.
Additionally, you might want to book them for half a day to take you around the showrooms to maximise your time. Do not take a taxi to the Fiera – take the metro. In the evening, taxis are hard to find and they don’t stop if you wave them down, so have the number (02 8585, 02 6767, 02 5353, 02 8383 and 02 3100) handy.
REMEMBER- The meter will start running as soon as the driver gets the call!
MEETING POINTS If you want to meet people, there are several key places that we would suggest listed below. These are away from design destinations and are accessible.
Some of our recommendations include the following: if you are in Zona Tortona seek out the new hotel, Magna Pars (see p. 95) - it has a lovely courtyard cafe, a perfect lunch location and still a secret. Adjacent to Rossana Orlandi is the magical Pane e Acqua (see p. 95) - ideal for lunch, opens at 12.30. For a serious breakfast meeting or aperitivo, head to The Four Seasons or Park Hyatt. If the weather is good - nothing beats The Bulgari Hotel garden, especially for an indulgent breakfast meeting.
Since the weather forecast for next week looks promising, head to the gardens of The Bulgari Hotel. Additionally, we recommend the outside cafe at Corso Como (see p. 91).

The installation will be set out over a 1,200 m2 space inside the SaloneUfficio pavilions, illustrating several different scenarios that give full rein to the main strands of his vision of the workspace: mobility, conviviality, pleasure, fun, with offices opening onto both the inside and the outside of the building, a rejection of the cloned spaces, enclosed spaces and the serial repetitiveness that so often characterizes offices and their totalitarian nature. Location: Via Alemagna 6 Dates: April 6, 2013 - February 23, 2014 Opening Hours: 11am – 6pm

In this framework, the installation designed by Architect Citterio for B&B Italia pays homage to its founder, Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, who was the first to consider the application of polyurethane foam moulding technology to the furnishing sector, thus radically revolutionising the same.

One of the highlights during Salone, is to drop in at least twice to Spazio Rossana Orlandi – which is specially curated by Rossana. The showroom is divided into many tiny installations, as well as her showcase garden and cafe which comes into its own when the sun shines and you drop in for coffee or a homemade salad for lunch. The place is set in an abandoned Milan factory and at the very top, do not miss the store where you can also buy some very unusual things to take home with you. We often go to Pane e Aqua next door for lunch. There are familiar names who Rossana tracks – from Jaime Hayon, to Piet Hein Eek, and Nacho Carbonell. This year she is also curating another two exhibitions in the city which are not to miss, one at Museo Bagatti Valsecchi and another in the Zara flagship store in Corso Vittorio Emanuele. At Spazio Rossana Orlandi you will find Punkt, who Camron is representing for the first time, with a presentation of their ES 01 Extension Socket designed by Colombian designer Georges Moanack under the direction of Jasper Morrison. Additionally, you will discover Bokja, the Beirut-based studio there with their evocative Migration Collection – referencing stories of movement and change from all over the world.
Baroncelli will debut in Milan within the space with the launch of Innovo, a striking wall installation and collection of new lights. This is constructed with intricate care, the centrepiece uses a selection of wall lights as well as vintage chandelier remnants salvaged from Baroncelli’s workshop and store rooms in Murano. The international preview of the book 'co-evolution', highlighting the first 12 years of the careers of Kiki van Eijk and Joost van Bleiswijk, will take place in Milan during Salone del Mobile. Presented in a special setting with feminime and masculine metal designs at Spazio Rossana Orlandi, the book can be seen for the first time! Published by Lecturis, on the occasion of the overview exhibition ‘co-evolution’ of Kiki and Joost at the Noordbrabants Museum, the Netherlands, from May until August 2013. 24

Taste, touch, sight, sound and smell BE OPEN brings a sensory feast to MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2013 BE OPEN Installation: House of the Senses by Christophe Pillet, part of INTERNI‚s HYBRID ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN project Video installation by Studio Azzurro Università Statale di Milano, Cortile della Farmacia Zang Tumb Tumb, interactive experience by Sfelab Winners of the BE OPEN Competition for Young Talents in Interactive Design Università Statale di Milano, Cortile della Farmacia BE OPEN Talk: Senses and Tastes, moderated by Philippe Daverio Participants: Aldo Cibic, Davide Oldani, Christophe Pillet, Michelangelo Pistoletto, John Thackara Università Statale di Milano, Aula di Rappresentanza BE OPEN Food Theatre Food experience by Massimiliano Alajmo and I‚m a Kombo Installation by Patricia Urquiola Furniture by Moroso, textiles by Kvadrat Moroso Showroom
BE OPEN’S journey continues in Milan at Fuorisalone 2013. After the launch at last year‚s Milan Design Week, BE OPEN returns this year at Università Statale as co-producer of INTERNI‚s Hybrid Architecture & Design project, from 8-21 April, with an installation by Christophe Pillet in the University‚s Cortile della Farmacia, the BE OPEN Talk, a panel disucssion moderated by Philippe Daverio on the sensory future and the BE OPEN Food Theatre at the Moroso showroom, a unique food experience. These events are a part of an extensive programme to research design for the five senses through innovative projects that reach out to the sixth sense, or intuition. The Foundation is committed to developing this concept, finding ways of connecting with people‚s intuitive responses through inventive combinations of the sensory and the technological, to create the ultimate in multi-sensory experiences. “This is BE OPEN‚s second year at Milan‚s international Design Week, underlining its commitment to becoming a bridge between the great minds of our time˜ philosophers, sociologists, designers, architects, artists, publishers, writers, businessmen and opinion leaders˜ and the promising new minds of the next generation. (Elena Baturina, Founder of BE OPEN) BE OPEN’s installation at the University is a part of Interni Magazine’s Hybrid Architecture & Design project. BE OPEN‚s House of the Senses, an architectural installation by leading architect and designer Christophe Pillet, will be juxtaposed with Zang Tumb Tumb, a series of interactive design works by multidisciplinary practice Sfelab. Animating the XV century portico that surrounds the courtyard, Zang Tumb Tumb‚s technological interface will dialogue with Pillet‚s tactile, sensory work. Sfelab were the winners of the BE OPEN Design Competition, a platform for young talent.

The House of the Senses is a contemplative pavilion located in the centre of Cortile Farmacia and integrated with the existing geometry of the formal garden. "I wanted to give a pared down, almost simplistic vision of architecture,‰ says Pillet. „The outside is rather 'quaint' - a simple black wood box, covered in vegetation. Inside an eclectic, impressionistic collage of random video images loops in no particular order. The visitor can only have a visceral response to these very different experiences - a sensory overload". The three walls of the pavilion are screens for moving images created by Studio Azzurro. Floor and ceiling are made from a special reflective material that enhances the impressionist effect of the space, endlessly reflecting the images that are projected onto the walls. Six tall, slim trees rise through the roof and become the heart of the installation, bringing nature into contact with the screen technology. Visitors will be drawn by the pulse of films streamed onto the pavilion and by Sfelab‚s interactive performances in the surrounding colonnade, all geared towards investigating how technology can enhance sensual experience. Prominent creatives, sociologists and entrepreneurs, such as celebrated artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, inspirational designer Aldo Cibic, innovation guru John Thackara, star chef Davide Oldani and global architect / designer Christophe Pillet, will share their thoughts about the sensory future in the BE OPEN Talk Senses and Tastes - a panel discussion moderated by critic Philippe Daverio at the Aula di Rappresentanza at Statale University. The Fuorisalone will also be the setting for the launch of the BE OPEN Food Theatre at the Moroso showroom, a brand new element of the foundation‚s sensory programme. On 9 April, BE OPEN will host a unique event focusing on the sense of taste, with an innovative food experience at Moroso’s showroom in via Pontaccio. Using Kvadrat’s textiles and Moroso‚s furniture, celebrated designer Patricia Urquiola will create a Œstage‚ for Italian Massimiliano Alajmo, the world‚s youngest chef to be awarded 3 Michelin Stars and the Danish duo I‚m a Kombo. Massimiliano Alajmo‚s dinner Œperformance‚ will be inspired by the theme of colour and a different sense will be integrated in o each one of his dishes There will be a course that will allow the guests to perceive the sound of food; a course which is to be experienced wearing glasses with orange lenses and for the dessert, a scent reminiscent of childhood will be sprayed into the room. The huge table designed by Patricia Urquiola will be covered in plants in reference to the natural act of eating. I‚m A KOMBO‚s menu brings avant-garde Nordic cuisine together with traditional Italian food. Their cocktail will convey the sense of touch, referencing the platters that Urquiola is covering in Kvadrat‚s variously coloured and textured textiles. The menu has been designed to complement Uriquiola‚s installation, offering a welcoming space for guests.
This event is the precursor to BE OPEN‚s Paris-Dakar project, a series of concept restaurants that will be designed in collaboration with the most interesting creatives of our time, a journey where taste is brought into dialogue with the other senses and where different food cultures meet to create a unique experience. Paris-Dakar is one of BE OPEN‚S business development projects, where young and established creatives can develop innovative concepts and projects to improve our future.

Scuola Politecnica di DesignEvery project should have a call to action, catch waves of interest, find its own audience. Love, beauty, intelligence and craft skills are just some of the ingredients to start with. Sometimes you have to trigger a reaction and encourage people to engage in a longlasting dialogue with good design. This exhibition presents works from the students that attended SPD Master programmes in recent years. They belong to apparently distant universes from car design to editorial, from advertising to furniture design. They have all put forward the most distinctive sign of the school approach: its workshop practice, a format open to the relationship with professionals, companies and institutions and combined with insights into cross-cultural contexts and experimental attitudes. We are looking forward to seeing you at CALL TO ACTION.

MEET AND EAT BISTRO DA GIACOMO Bistro Da Giacomo offers a 7 day a week service from lunchtime to two in the morning, serving dishes mainly based on meat and game. This three room restaurant interconnected by beautiful arches and a gentleman’s club-style bookcase is a great stop after the theatre or a late work night. Since this is everyone's favourite - book before you leave for Milan. Location: Via Pasquale Sottocorno 6, Milan Contact: 02 7602 2653 www.giacomobistrot.com
CRACCO-PECK Perfect for a wind-down dinner at the end of the week, Michelin starred Cracco-Peck manages to combine both elegant dining and creative, out-the-box cusine. With dishes such as pasta with sea urchins and coffee on the menu, the best meals are often the ones that seem most bizarre. The interior is designed by architects Gian Maria and Roberto Beretta too, making the restaurant’s setting as stunning as the food. Location: Via Victor Hugo, 4 20123 Contact: +39 02 876774

TEN THINGS TO DO IN MILAN WHEN YOU WANT TO ESCAPE FROM DESIGN 1. SHOPPING IN MILAN A diversion while in Milan is to head to some of our favourite stores, including Corso Como, the emporium curated by Carla Sozzani. Do not miss Vittorio Radice's Design Supermarket in the lower floor of La Rinacente by the Duomo. In addition seek out the Fornasetti store at Corso G Matteotti 1A and don't leave without seeing Tom Ford's flagship store, Via Verri, 3. Do stop off at the Acqua di Parma Boutique - Via Gesu, 1 - a few minutes from The Four Seasons Hotel.
2. FIERA DI SENIGALLIA - SATURDAY MORNINGS Every Saturday morning, this flea market becomes a picturesque sight, full of noise, colour and style. At this market you can pick up art nouveau lamps, perfumed candles, comics, records - inspired by Indian, South American and African craftwork. Location: Strada Alzaia Naviglio Grande Hours: 9am - 7pm Saturdays Transport: Metro Porta
3. BAMBOO BAR - ARMANI HOTEL Go early in the week before it gets crowded to this rooftop bar, with the best views of Milan. The bar is on the 7th floor and once you are there, you will not want to leave. Cocktails are accompanied by an endless stream of antipasti. Location: Via Manzoni 31 Contact: +39 02 8883 8888 www.milan.armanihotels.com
4. PECK If you are near The Duomo, head towards Via Spadari and you will find Peck, a gastronomic institution hard to beat. It is also a perfect place to grab a cappuccino and plan your day. If you go there to purchase things to take home, our recommendation is parmigiano, choose from 50 types of pasta, fresh pesto, and grab some white truffle olive oil. TEN THINGS TO DO IN MILAN WHEN YOU WANT TO ESCAPE FROM DESIGN 5. PINACOTECA DI BRERA This jewel of a museum is right in the Brera district, and was originally a 14th-century monastery. Today, it houses one of the finest art collections in the world. We always ensure to detour during the week. Even in an hour you can make sure not to miss, Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio, The Dead Christ by Mantegna, The Marriage of the Virgin by Raphael and The Kiss by Francesco Hayez. Since it opens at 8.30am - it is the perfect way to start the day. Location: Via Pasquale Sottocorno 6 Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 8.30am - 7.15pm. Closed on Mondays Contact: 02 7602 2653
6. TEATRO ALLA SCALA La Scala is without question, the most prestigious opera house in the world. It is worth bearing in mind that the museum adjacent to the opera house is definitely worth a visit. We particularly like the costumes worn by Maria Callas. During the week of Salone highlights include Macbeth on Tuesday, the Filarmonica della Scala on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on Thursday the Mariinskij Theatre Orchestra of Saint Petersburg. Location: Largo Ghiringhelli 1, Piazza Scala www.teatroallascala.org
7. DUOMO ROOFTOP Milan's Cathedral has been a central part of the city's life since 1386. It is the world's largest Gothic cathedral, with 135 spires and 3,200 statues. Massive restoration over the past decade now leaves it in pristine condition. Do try and make it to the roof terraces while you are in Milan on a sunny day. There is an elevator for those who want to miss the 201 stairs. From the top, you get a different perspective of the architecture, spires and gargoyes.
8: SPA: LEPRI SPA By the end of the long week, a visit to the spa is likely to be exactly what you need. The Aveda-based Lepri spa is one of our favourites. Owned by Fabrizio Lepri, the backstage manager for all Tom Ford events and one of the city's most sought-after stylists, it’s a haven away from the chaos of design week. Location: Via Omenoni, 2 (Piazza Meda) 20121 Hours: Spa 10.30am-7.30pm Mon-Sat www.leprilss.it
