INTRODUCTION NEW YORK 2015 New York during ICFF and off-site districts and destinations has never been better. Additionally, the fact that dates this year coincide with Frieze make things even more interesting - reinforced by visits to the new Whitney Museum. In this pack, following on from what we produced with our Milan Pack last month, you will see that we have produced a map and provided background on the key destinations of note - from Sight Unseen OFFSITE to BKLYN Designs. There are major new showrooms of note, from Bisazza’s stunning new space with a roof garden by the Highline to Moooi, who are a welcome addition and debut next weekend. Dezeen also will launch in New York next week; we have tracked their success and believe this will be really positive for the design community. We wish Marcus and his team success. After Milan in April, we are delighted to see that Kartell is bringing Sottsass to New York, Artemide will showcase Les Danseuses from Atelier Oi and Bisazza’s debut in the new space will showcase their latest line of Contemporary Cement Tiles. We are also pleased that MoMA will champion London - with Tech City London - an unmissable showcase of talent from the UK. Our Camron New York clients have all exceeded expectations and we have listed these in our Pack. Looking forward to seeing you in New York next month.

The fair will run from May 13 through 17, 2015 at its new location, Skylight Clarkson Sq in West Soho, as part of NYCxDESIGN, and will showcase established and emerging artists and designers from New York, Copenhagen, Milan, Paris, and many other creative capitals. Among the notable names to be featured at the 2015 fair are Nordic modernist Kaare Klint (Modernity, Stockholm), dynamic German newcomer Valentin Loellmann (Galerie Gosserez, Paris), and revered California enamelist June Schwarcz (De Vera, New York). Collective Design is committed to presenting a carefully curated selection of works that speak to creative ingenuity and aesthetic quality across material, style, and technique. Among the notable projects to be featured at this year’s fair are a handcrafted, organic lighting element by Israeli artist Ayala Serfaty (Maison Gerard, New York); ornate mirrors inspired by Lolita from Beth Katleman (Todd Merrill Studio Contemporary, New York); and bronze sculptural forms by fashion designer Rogan Gregory (R & Company, New York). Collective Design is also pleased to announce a collaboration with Sight Unseen OFFSITE for the 2015 fair. Organized by Monica Khemsurov and Jill Singer, editors of the influential online magazine Sight Unseen, OFFSITE is an annual curated exhibition that showcases the most directional, cutting-edge ideas in contemporary furniture design. Sight Unseen OFFSITE focuses on the best independent design studios and the brightest American talents, and is among New York design week’s must-see destinations. Collective Design will present a Sight Unseen OFFSITE satellite show at Skylight Clarkson Sq, which will highlight the work of several up-and-coming designers. The collaboration underscores Collective Design’s commitment to showcasing the full spectrum of design talent from the start of the 20th century to today, providing audiences with the opportunity to experience the latest in design innovation from the next big names in the field. “The presentations at this year’s fair are the most diverse and compelling in our young history. COLLECTIVE DESIGN location at Skylight Clarkson Sq to our open plan and multiple installations, our vision is to create a unique experience for every visitor that will inspire them to engage with and invest in the incredible objects on view.” Additional exhibitors participating in Collective Design’s 2015 fair include: Twenty First Gallery (New York); Etage Projects (Copenhagen); Fuglen (Oslo); ADN Galería (Mexico City); Galerie Negropontes (Paris); Gallery BAC (New York); Gallery Loupe (Montclair, NJ); Garrido Gallery (Madrid); J. Lohmann Gallery (New York); kinder MODERN (New York); Ornamentum (Hudson, NY); Patrick Parrish (New York); ProjectB (Milan); Sienna Patti (Dalton, MA); Vance Trimble (New York); and Wexler Gallery (Philadelphia). A comprehensive list of exhibitors follows. Several internationally acclaimed designers and brands are organizing special installations to be featured in this year’s fair. Among the highlights are: •

Jonathan Nesci – With Present Perimeter, Nesci has developed a designframework that combines equal numbers of hexagons, halfhexagons, rhombuses, and triangles. The rigorous method will result in the creation of a series of mirrors produced specifically for Collective Design’s fair and in conjunction with a parallel solo exhibition at Patrick Parrish, New York.

Dana Barnes – Following her 2013 installation for Collective Design—SWASH, a series of suspended woven-fiber seats—Dana Barnes will return to the 2015 edition of the fair with new work that continues her explorations of textural compositions, infusing innovative materials into sculptural forms.

Design da Gema – Brazilian artist and designer David Elia, founder of Design da Gema studio, will create a special installation for the fair’s café inspired by his surroundings in modern-day Brazil. The presentation will use furniture design to explore the epidemic of violent crime occurring within the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Collective Design also remains dedicated to revealing the creative process, as well as the material culture, of design. For this year’s fair the American Design Club, which promotes the efforts of young American designers worldwide, has been invited to present the work of two contemporary designers who will produce work onsite, allowing visitors to engage in the making of design. •

Liz Collins – The New York-based artist and fashion and textile designer will create a woven tapestry installation that places art and applied design in conversation with each other. This performance installation invites audiences into the process, and will be created live during the run of the fair.

InSek/ Ashira Israel – The Brooklyn-based studio InSek will present an installation by Ashira Israel that explores the intersection of architecture, art, and design. The presentation will encompass two spaces: a lab-like environment and a larger space that functions as a type of archaeological site.

Each year, Collective Design’s Focus presentation features influential design from a particular country or region. In 2015 the special presentation will highlight the enduring impact of Italian design on artists and designers from across the globe, and will feature objects from Memphis-Post Design Gallery (Milan), Donzella (New York), Nicholas Kilner (New York), and Glass Past (New York). Stefano Tonchi, editor-in-chief of W magazine, will curate the Collective Focus: Italy exhibition. Tonchi will collaborate on the installation, contribute a curatorial statement to the 2015 fair guide, and participate in Collective Conversations, a series of panel discussions in which design leaders share their insights on the field.

CAMRON CLIENTS IN NEW YORK ARTEMIDE PRESENTS LES DANSEUSES FROM ATELIER OI Artemide, a member of the Soho Design District, will present Les Danseuses from Atelier Oi, an installation of lights that whirl and shape waves reminiscent of a flamenco gown. Les danseuses, meaning the dancers, are based on spinning textile circles. The lights move according to their own pace, a phenomenon partly accounted for by the Coriolis forces, the same forces that govern the physics of hurricanes. These inertial forces are perpendicular to the direction followed by a body moving in space, which rotates uniformly in turn, as seen by an observer that shares the same reference point. Les danseuses are coordinated with a computer program to achieve a real choreography. Cocktail: Saturday, May 16, 2015, 6:00 – 9:00 PM (press preview 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM) 16

CAMRON CLIENTS IN NEW YORK OLSON KUNDIG: THE TOM KUNDIG COLLECTION AT ICFF First launched in 2012 by Olson Kundig, The Tom Kundig Collection is a steel accessories line focused on intimately-scaled hardware components. Each piece celebrates the moments when people touch the buildings and spaces they inhabit. The Kundig-designed collection consists of unique cut-and-folded steel products ranging from cabinet and door pulls to rollers and tables. Each piece is fabricated by 12th Avenue Iron, then finished and waxed, revealing the subtle marks of its making. The focus of the collection stems from Kundig’s well-known interest in the ways people interact with their environment. In Kundig’s architecture, the simple act of opening a door becomes a ballet between user and structure. 16

The Herman Miller Collection and Geiger invite you to experience the sensual minimalism of the iconic New York designer Ward Bennett through an environment designed by Various Projects. A self-educated polymath, Bennett drew inspiration from a range of eras and disciplines. Before making a name for himself in furniture and interior design in the 1960s and ‘70s, he interacted with masters like Brancusi, Giacometti, and Le Corbusier, and shared a studio with sculptor Louise Nevelson. His own sculpture was exhibited at the Whitney’s Annual Exhibition of 1950, and in 1960, the Museum of Modern Art mounted a one-man show of his jewelry designs. Whether designing office furniture for Brickel Associates, glassware for Tiffany & Co., or his celebrated rooftop apartment on Central Park West, Bennett distinguished himself with a refined minimalist approach and masterful appropriation of materials. Conceived by Various Projects, and installed at the 38 Orchard Street location of Project No. 8, Ward Bennett: Making Sense offers visitors an opportunity to discover Bennett’s designs in a wholly new light. Uniquely crafted archival furniture pieces featuring exceptional, contemporary materials accompany a range of vintage objects and reading material selected by Various Projects. Echoing Bennett’s desire to create furniture and spaces that could be lived in and on, this is an environment to engage the senses and fully experience the quality and craft of a master designer. INVITATIONS: SHOWROOMS AND INSTALLATIONS Irish Design 2015 Inaugural Exhibition at NYCxDesign Liminal – Irish design at the threshold 15th – 18th May 2015, WantedDesign Irish design is represented for the first time at WantedDesign in NYC as part of the evolving flagship design exhibition for Irish Design 2015. Liminal – Irish design at the threshold features over 20 designers, architects, companies and studios involved in collaborations across disciplines, as part of ID2015, a year long initiative backed by the Irish government promoting and celebrating Irish design in Ireland and internationally. With a breadth of disciplines ranging from the tech start-ups of Dublin’s silicon docks, through to architectural innovation and woven textile manufacture, Ireland today tells a fascinating story of design on the edge and design between the boundaries. Presenting a pivotal chapter in Irish design, Liminal explores, identifies and showcases Irish creativity, and how designers, companies and studios are moving across the disciplinary boundaries and the limits of what design was, into what design can become. Taking the theme of liminality, which refers to spaces that lie between the known and the unknown, this exhibition explores the craft of collaboration and presents the exploratory journeys undertaken by designers. Moving through a series of design venues that started in Milan, and now presented in New York, then Dublin and Eindhoven, the exhibition demonstrates Irish design excellence across disciplines and considers the possibilities for the future. Highlights of the Irish Design 2015 exhibition at WantedDesign include ceramicist Andrew Ludick working with contemporary rug designer Ceadogán Rugs in transforming the intricate nuances of Ludick’s small scale ceramic pieces into dynamic textiles with a strong graphic signature. Peter Sheehan and Cathal Loughnane are exhibiting the History Chair, a fully resolved fusion of function, emotion, technology, human connection and mastery of materials. Also showing is the furniture of Claire Anne O’Brien, drawing on Ireland’s material heritage and traditional techniques to make playful investigations into structure and form using the unique properties of knit. A collaboration with Seed Labs Inc. and Design Partners has developed an innovative new technology that will revolutionize how we interact with our living and workspaces. http://www.wanteddesignnyc.com/exhibitor/exhibitors-wd-2015/irish-design-2015 Notes to editors: Images available to download: http://bit.ly/LiminalNYC Exhibitor Talk: “Design Threshold” 4.30 – 5.30pm, Sunday 17th May This talk will feature representatives from Design Partners, Perch and Rothschild & Bickers, moderated by Paul Makovsky. Liminal Curators: Louise Allen – Head of International Programmes, Irish Design 2015 Alex Milton – Programme Director, Irish Design 2015 Angela O’Kelly - Head of Design for Body and Environment, National College of Art & Design (NCAD), Dublin About Irish Design 2015: Irish Design 2015 (ID2015) is a year-long initiative backed by the Irish government exploring, promoting and celebrating Irish design throughout Ireland and internationally in order to drive job creation, grow exports and increase competitiveness. The programme for the year includes presenting the work of Irish designers at high profile events in design capitals including London, Paris, Eindhoven, Milan, New York, Chicago and Hong Kong/Shenzhen.
