Fact sheet for NYCxDESIGN

INTRODUCTION This year’s three-week NYCxDESIGN marathon is clearly a testament to the ever-expanding design industry and community in New York, as well as the international interest that it continues to attract. In addition to the usual destinations, such as ICFF and Wanted Design (in Brooklyn and Manhattan again), the city of New York is more supportive than ever, with a new design pavilion right at the heart of it all, in Times Square. This year, Sight Unseen OFFSITE moves back downtown to 100 6th Avenue, with a highly focused program of 25 elevated individual presentations. Their Norway x New York collaboration returns for its second year, with 5 American and 5 Norwegian design studios, and a Sight Unseen-curated exhibition of 25 emerging designers will be a highlight. This year, they also introduce Sight Unseen Presents, an event series meant to increase the visibility of design with the activation of a dozen fashion and design shops and restaurants throughout the city from May 16-23. If you’re visiting from out of town, a trip out to Greenpoint is totally worth it for a visit to A/D/O, a 23,000 square foot design space that will launch their second programming season – Common Sense – this week. All together we’ll have 23 projects supported by our team in NY, four people in from London and four from our growing Los Angeles office. We’re excited for you to join us! Judy Dobias

NYCEDC Launches NYCxDESIGN 2017 Program includes hundreds of events throughout the City, 2nd annual NYCxDESIGN Awards, and a brand-new Design Pavilion in Times Square May 2017 – New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today launched the fifth installment of NYCxDESIGN, the City’s official celebration of global design. The expanded program includes hundreds of events taking place throughout the five boroughs from May 3 - 24, 2017. NYCxDESIGN focuses on the City’s cultural and commercial opportunities, elevates established and emerging design practices and increases local and international awareness of, and appreciation for, design. In partnership with the Public Art Fund (PAF), this year’s celebration kicked off with a press conference at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The event also featured the opening of Anish Kapoor’s installation, Descension, presented by PAF, as part of its 40th anniversary season. Event speakers included Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, Cindy Allen, Editorin-Chief, Interior Design magazine, Nicholas Baume, Public Art Fund Director and Chief Curator, internationally renowned artist Anish Kapoor, Eric Landau, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park and Edward Hogikyan, Senior Vice President of Marketing, NYCEDC. “New York is the global capital of design. NYCxDESIGN showcases our own homegrown talent, brings ideas, art and innovation from all over the world. With more exhibits and partners than ever, this year’s events are not to miss,” said Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen. Created in 2013 with the support of the New York City Council, NYCxDESIGN has grown in scope and popularity both locally and internationally. The event provides a unifying platform for New York City’s diverse design community and highlights their contributions to the city’s unique cultural fabric and economy while previewing the latest in global design. The New York City metro area is home to over 7,500 design firms and over 50,000 full-time designers. Having increased by over 30% in the last decade, design firms generate over $555 million annually in City tax revenue. In an effort to expand the global impact of NYCxDESIGN, the program has been represented at a number of international design weeks including Milan, Shanghai, Barcelona, and Tokyo. 8

DESIGN DISTRICTS ICFF Announces the 2017 Editors’ Awards Judging Committee Leading Design Industry Editors to Recognize the Best of Global Design on Day One (New York) – April 20, 2017 – ICFF®, North America’s largest and most prestigious series of design events for interiors in its 29th year, is proud to announce its 2017 ICFF Editors’ Awards judging committee; five leading design industry media who will scour the show floor and recognize the designers and products that showcase the best in global design at ICFF NYC. This year’s ICFF judging committee members are Annie Block of Interior Design, Gilda Bojardi of INTERNI, Dan Howarth of Dezeen, Sheila Kim of Architizer and Paul Makovsky of Metropolis. “Each Editors’ Award judge has a proven record of excellence in his or her coverage of and dedication to the global design industry. We are grateful for the time they will give to our ICFF exhibitors in selecting the best of global design as they deliberate and award those brands and designers pushing our industry forward,” said Kevin O’Keefe, ICFF event director. The judging committee will walk the show floor on day one of ICFF, Sunday, May 21, searching for the designers and products who exemplify the best of global design. Judges also create the award categories, recognizing products not just by type, but by style, application or theme. The entire judging process is done from the show floor, with no submission process, forcing a product to stand on its own and withstand critique from some of our industry’s most critical eyes.

Join Us for our 2017 Sight Unseen OFFSITE Show! Sight Unseen, the influential online magazine, is returning to New York Design Week with the fourth annual Sight Unseen OFFSITE fair, taking place at 100 Avenue of the Americas and running from May 19–22. The 2017 event will be even more focused than in past years on individ-ual presentations: Pared back to just 25 participants, each will have a larger exhibition space in which to show a collection of more elevated, high-end work. To complement these solo installations, Sight Unseen’s editors have chosen a select number of up-andcoming talents for a standalone group exhibition. Sight Unseen OFFSITE 2017 will include the following highlights: • The second edition of Norway x New York, a long-distance collaboration between 5 American and 5 Norwegian design studios, selected and paired by Sight Unseen: Moving Mountains + Runa Klock, Vonnegut/Kraft + Kneip, Jamie Wolfond + Sigve Knutson, Visibility + Noidoi, and Slash Objects + Thomas Jenkins. Sponsored by the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York. • A virtual-reality experience for which designer and art director Tom Hancocks will create eight rooms — viewable in 360-degree panoramas on VR headsets — that are designed around works offered by the online art purveyor Twyla, which sells exclusive limited editions by the world’s top artists. • Debut presentations by two brand-new emerging talents — Savannah-based Eny Lee Parker and Los Angeles–based Leah Ring of Another Human — presented in partnership with Levi’s Made & Crafted

DESIGN DISTRICTS • A group exhibition featuring new works by a dozen up-and-coming designers, hand-picked by Sight Unseen’s editors, including Ben Barber, Robert Sukrachand, Trey Jones, DAMM Design, Talbot & Yoon, and more • A site-specific interactive installation by Calico Wallpaper and The Principals, featuring a new collection of wallpaper inspired by the aura as a projection of energy • The debut of a new furniture collaboration between the Miamibased designers Jonathan Gonzalez and Deon Rubi • The debut of the first furniture collection by the noted New York interior design firm, and James Beard Award finalists, Home Studios • Additional presentations of new work by Elyse Graham, Ben & Aja Blanc, New Tendency, Guillermo Santoma, Fernando Mastrangelo Studio, Jean-Pascal Gauthier, BZippy & Co, Grain, Fort Makers, Slash Objects, Crosby Studios, Areti, Erich Ginder, Larry Parker, Simon Johns, and more • 2017 also marks the debut of Sight Unseen Presents, an event series meant to increase the visibility of New York Design Week by activating a dozen retail spaces and restaurants throughout the city with design content and programming. Sight Unseen will create its second-ever print magazine to document and promote the series. To view a full lineup for both events, visit offsite.sightunseen.com

www.offsite.sightunseen.com/sight-unseen-presents In conjunction with Sight Unseen OFFISTE, Sight Unseen is launching the first annual edition of Sight Unseen Presents, an event series meant to increase the visibility of New York Design Week by activating a dozen retail spaces and restaurants throughout the city with design content and programming running from May 16-23, 2017. The participants — whose projects and installations are featured in the pages of an accompanying magazine — occupy the increasingly intersecting worlds of fashion, food, and design, and represent the more holistic, inclusive attitude towards design that Sight Unseen has always championed. The following venues are taking place in the inaugural edition of Sight Unseen Presents: Anthom 25 Mercer Street, New York, NY 10013 May 15-31 Hours: Monday to Saturday 11am-7pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm Party: Thursday, May 18 (rsvp@shopanthom.com) Building on Justin Donnelly and Monling Lee’s background as architects, “Architecture Parlant” is a dialogue with classical architectural forms. In conjunction with a suite of dynamic lighting, the installation transforms historical shapes, surfaces, and textures into a changing landscape of color and figure. Canal Street Market 265 Canal Street New York, NY 10013 May 15-31 Hours: Monday to Wednesday 11am-7pm, Thursday to Saturday 11am-8pm, Sunday 11am-6pm A CHIAOZZA-curated show in CSM’s glass-enclosed exhibition space will include works by designers and artists, responding to the prompt: Piles, Stacks, Lumps and Mounds. “The impulse to build something can be inspired by the inevitability of a pile of laundry, the precision of a stack of stones on a trail, the flippancy of a lump of detritus on the subway platform, or the efficiency in a mound of dirt made from an anthill. Language would have us believe that formlessness has no character, is immature and unrefined, yet we see distinctive shapeliness and elegant gestures in a simple and considered mass.” In addition, Matter will curate Rest Stop, an interactive design lounge from May 1st to 31st featuring works by Objects of Common Interest, &tradition, Established & Sons, Matter Made and Calico Wallpaper x Ana Kras, presented by Extell’s One Manhattan Square. Coming Soon 37 Orchard Street New York, NY 10002 May 16-23 Hours: Monday to Friday 12pm-7:30pm, Saturday to Sunday 11am-7pm With Drunk Tank Pink, Coming Soon will try to redeem the color pink from its current “millennial” impression, and present the hue in all its historical and contemporary implications. A new light by The Principals, an installation by Grace Villamil, a rug by Cold Picnic, posters by Alex Proba, sculptures by CHIAOZZA, and various vintage finds that have been obsessively collected by Coming Soon will all feature in the exhibition. The show will also include a work by Gerardo Gonzalez, who will offer at his nearby restaurant Lalito an all pink-dish inspired by Luis Barragan. Creatures of Comfort 205 Mulberry Street, New York, NY 10012 May 16-23 Hours: Monday to Saturday 11am-7pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm An exhibition of furniture totems and lighting by Brendan Timmins, in light wood tones with pops of color, stripes, and details that coincide with Creatures of Comfort’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection.

DESIGN DISTRICTS Dimes 49 Canal Street, New York, NY 10002 Hours: Monday to Friday 8am-11pm, Saturday 9am-11pm, Sunday 9am-10pm The Dimes Peppermill is an homage to the artist Andre Cadere and his sticks, and its simplicity in form and color is a reflection of the Dimes spirit. The peppermill was designed by Dimes co-founder Sabrina DeSousa, hand-carved on a wood lathe in Pennsylvania, and hand-painted in Chinatown. Because they are handmade, no two peppermills will be the same, and variations in color will change with each piece. The new peppermills — along with a selection of vintage and new mills that inspired the project — will be on view at Dimes throughout the week, and a special, pepper-infused cocktail will be on the menu. Kasthall 200 Lexington Avenue #611, New York, NY 10016 At its Midtown showroom, Kasthall will feature styled vignettes, using rugs from its 2017 collection — including Harvest, a new rug made from leftover yarns in the Kasthall factory — alongside lighting and furniture by Areti. Lalito 104 Bayard Street, New York, NY 10013 Hours: Wednesday to Monday 11am-4pm and 6pm-12am, Tuesday 6pm-12am The Chinatown restaurant will feature an all-pink dish, inspired by the late architect Luis Barragan’s occasional requests for dinner in that particular hue. Mission Chinese Food 171 East Broadway, New York, NY 10002 May 15-23 Hours: Wednesday to Sunday 12pm-4pm, Sunday and Monday 5:30pm-11pm, Tuesday to Saturday 5:30pm-12am “Rear View” is a collaboration between Angela Dimayuga of Mission Chinese Food and the restaurant’s friends and neighbors, Felix Burrichter and Michael Bullock of PIN-UP magazine. For a limited time, the restaurant will showcase carefully selected reels showing views from famous high-rise buildings and restaurants — as well as other iconic sites — projected onto the blank walls of MCF’s subterranean bar. A bit of animation has been added to the images, in an ode to the animated waterfalls often featured on the walls of the trio’s favorite Asian eateries. Paintbox 17 Crosby Street, New York, NY 10013 Hours: Monday 3pm-9pm, Tuesday to Wednesday 11am-9pm, Thursday to Saturday 9am-9pm, Sunday 11am-8pm A special Sight Unseen manicure will be on offer, inspired by the California Light and Space art movement and the acrylic sculptures of legendary L.A. artist Vasa Mihich. Picture Room 117 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11201 May 19-June 15 Hours: Tuesday to Thursday 1pm-7pm, Friday to Saturday 11am-8pm, Sunday 11am-7pm Event date: Friday, May 19, 6pm-8pm (open to the public) At its brand-new home in Brooklyn Heights, Picture Room will present a series of ceramic and textile sculptural works that were featured in the performance Transparent Uploads by Hayden Dunham. Rachel Comey 95 Crosby Street, New York, NY 10012 May 16-23 Hours: Monday to Saturday 11am-7:30pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm Party: Wednesday, May 17, 7pm-9pm (open to the public) Rachel Comey and Areaware present Dazzled by Kanghee Kim. Kim’s installation uses a common household form, the drying rack, as a frame for display, pointing to the curious relationship shared by darkroom photography and handmade clothing — the need to hangdry. Using photographs shot on site at Rachel Comey in addition to images from her series, Street Errands, Kim has created a playful installation mirroring the interior architecture of Comey’s boutique. Kim is a Brooklyn-based photographer who uses collage and altered photography to create subtlety surreal scenes from everyday environments. She recently produced a conceptual puzzle called Puzzle In Puzzle made in collaboration with Areaware, using photography from her series, Mirrors. The Primary Essentials 372 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217 Hours: Sunday to Monday 12pm-6pm, Tuesday to Saturday 12pm-7pm Party: Thursday, May 18, 6-9PM (open to the public) Brooklyn ceramicist Natalie Weinberger has collaborated with a Berkshires woodworker named Peter Thorne to create Turned Tables, a new series of ceramic-topped tables on turned-wood legs. These tables, as well as a selection of new vessels by Weinberger, will debut at the Brooklyn design shop.

What began seven years ago as an effort to marry culture with entrepreneurship has since blossomed into a singular event where the world can experience the apex of modern International design in an all-encompassing event with true human scale. Far removed from the concept of a traditional trade show, WantedDesign offers an international crossroads free of frontiers. WantedDesign encourages elevated yet accessible discussions on design and serves as an ignition point for up and coming design studios and independent designers who wish to tell their story, build their brand and find their audience. This year WantedDesign Brooklyn aligned its dates with WantedDesign Manhattan to allow more visitors to visit both places. TRANSATLANTIC CREATIVE EXCHANGE An exhibition curated by Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat; founders of WantedDesign, presented in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy Transatlantic Creative Exchange is a cross-oceanic collaborative exhibition presented by WantedDesign in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, part of Oui Design program, sponsored by Institut Français-Paris, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, and the Florence Gould Foundation. The Transatlantic Creative Exchange is one of the major exhibits of Oui Design. This program, was initiated in 2016 by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy to share the French creativity and savoir-faire with the US and strengthen creative ties and collaboration in the various fields of design. The five participating French-American duos are selected based on overlapping interests, geographic diversity and desire to engage in creative collaboration. The goal of Transatlantic Creative Exchanges is to push both designer and manufacturer to shift paradigms, explore technique and innovate boldly as a unified transatlantic design team. Thanks to the project’s open philosophy of freedom of expression and virtually non-existent commercial guidelines; designers, artisans, fabricators and manufacturers are all free to collaborate, exchange and interweave their personal perspectives and experience into collaborative expressions of sublime design. Following a successful first edition in 2016, Transatlantic Creative Exchange returns to WantedDesign Brooklyn (May 17-23, 2017).

NYCXDESIGN INVITATIONS

Mad Maps Cody Hoyt May 11 – June 17, 2017 Opening Party on May 11th from 6–8pm Patrick Parrish Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new handbuilt ceramic vessels by Brooklyn artist Cody Hoyt. In Mad Maps, Hoyt charts out his own process of discovery and making, in which pattern counters chaos, and each elaborate stoneware vessel is the relic of a particular experience. Amid the fundamentally volatile medium of ceramics, Hoyt pursues order and meaning through geometric empiricism. Cody Hoyt began working with ceramics as a way to experiment with depth in his paintings. He now creates large, intricately-patterned stoneware vessels using his own hand-building and inlay techniques. Hoyt received his B.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2007. His work has been shown in New York Magazine, Dwell, Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, American Craft, Interview Magazine, Wallpaper, Juxtapoz, and the New York Times Magazine. Mad Maps is Cody Hoyt’s third solo exhibition with Patrick Parrish Gallery. He lives and works in Brooklyn. Please contact info@patrickparrish.com for more information.
