Introduction Over the past nine years, CDW has grown to become the dynamic hive of creative activity that it is today. Each year new brands, showrooms, and local businesses join us to celebrate this area’s energy. Clerkenwell Design Week has come to represent so much more than a trade design event; it’s a place where locals and the design world unite in celebration of the area’s rich community. Our 10th anniversary show is bursting with exciting content; from talks and workshops, to new collections and collaborations from the 100+ resident showrooms. CDW Presents is our passion project, for which we partner with talented creatives to create ambitious public space installations. Over the years our exhibition hubs have expanded, and we now have seven venues spread across Clerkenwell. Design Fields, in Spa Fields, houses contemporary designs from international brands; the vaults of fabric nightclub host the best lighting, and the subterranean House of Detention showcases exciting new design talent. The Church, Crypt and Cloister garden at The Order of St John accommodate highly prestigious names in the luxury interiors world. You can discover more workplace design at Project which has expanded this year to encompass industry-leading brands, or find the perfect hardware in Element. Underneath St James’s Church, the British Collection celebrates homegrown talent and craftsmanship. The showroom programme offers almost 400 events, from talks and product launches to workshops and parties, while there’s also Conversations at Clerkenwell which brings together the who’s who of the design world for discussions. Our renowned Fringe programme includes everything from artistic installations to bike tours.

This year we are celebrating Clerkenwell Design Week’s tenth birthday and to mark this, visitors to Clerkenwell during CDW will notice that there are ten candle-like structures situated throughout the area as part of Decade, one of the CDW Presents installations. We have seen over the years how CDW has grown to become a key event on the global design calendar, with its mix of inspiring exhibitions, innovative site-specific installations, and international brands. Clerkenwell Design Week is the time that many companies choose to show their latest products and host events that celebrate the best designs, from furniture launches to panel discussions. Clerkenwell itself is home to over 100 showrooms, as well as a wealth of restaurants, cafes and bars. It’s an area that is particularly rich with history and heritage, much of which has inspired the CDW Presents Programme, including a Victorian prison and the remains of a 16th century priory, St John’s Arch. We’ve created this pack that we think will help you see what’s on offer with a interactive Google Map to help you plan your visit and make the most of CDW 2019. It provides useful information on navigating your visit with a list of top ten product launches, unmissable installations and press events taking place during the week. The seven exhibitions; Design Fields, Platform, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail and Light, all showcase the diversity of design on offer. Bloggers should enjoy the Arper Bloggers Lounge which will again be offering a quiet place to work and connect, as well as a programme of events with design influencers, while we hope to see many of you at the CDW Press Office situated in Bourne & Hollingsworth.

So join us in celebrating our 10th edition of Clerkenwell Design Week. You’ll find me there in the heart of it, raising a toast to EC1!

CDW Presents Every year Clerkenwell Design Week presents new design projects and street spectacles, commissioned specially for the festival and featured prominently around Clerkenwell. Inviting some of the leading pioneers in the creative industry, these projects aim to push the boundaries of design, in terms of concepts, process and material capabilities.

Decade To coincide with CDW’s 10th edition, CDW Presents Decade – a collection of 10, individually unique celebratory candle-like beacons, each designed by pioneers within the creative industry. Each installation will be placed at key locations throughout Clerkenwell, with a nod to the area as London’s creative heart and CDW as the UK’s leading independent design festival. Various locations around Clerkenwell

Once Upon A Time Once Upon A Time draws on the rich and sometimes dark historical tales of Clerkenwell, from wife sales to prison bombings. Working in collaboration with UAL Chelsea College of Arts, BA Graphic Design Communication students will interpret stories from six locations, which will be brought to life by a series of graphical installations during CDW’s 10th edition. Various locations around Clerkenwell

Scale Rule This year’s winning concept responded to the theme of history and heritage, by proposing a new structure that subtly draws on the historic form of the St John’s Gate arch, whilst bringing in materials and geometries that reference the design culture of Clerkenwell today. The concept plays with the idea of space and enclosure, by inserting a densely built timber structure within the void of the archway. St John’s Gate, EC1M 4BU

The ‘Be, Well’ Pavilion The ‘Be, Well’ Pavilion will take you on a journey where you connect with the materials and see them transform. The portico housing a new Clerkenwell Well where we invite you to pause, reflect and leave your thoughts about the show, issues impacting the sector and anything else you’d like to share.

St John’s Square, EC1M 4DS

Community in collaboration with STORE Community community pavilion, exhibits flags produced during a series of workshops attended by people living in the borough of Islington. The flags are made of recycled plastic flakes that the participants composed and then fixed together with a heat press. Visitors are invited to sit and enjoy the colourful bunting created from waste within Spa Fields during CDW. Spa Fields park, EC1R 0DF

Once Upon A Time - Historical Guided Walking Tours Discover Clerkenwell’s rich history on a free walking tour led by Lansdown’s London tour guide, Karen. Clocks and Crusaders, Gin and Jerusalem, Radicals and Criminals all feature in this 90 minute guided walk which explores the narrow streets of Clerkenwell. It also includes a visit to the well that gave Clerkenwell its name. Farringdon Station, Free but booking is essential bit.ly/CDW-Once-Upon-A-Time-Tour

Reflect Us Reflect Us is an opportunity to look deeply; externally and internally. We all have insecurities, passions, our sights set on something. We all have eyes, and yet how often do you look deeply into the eyes of a stranger? This impressive art installation is crafted from macro photographs of eyes of the homeless, and invites you to look at the majesty and fragility of the human condition. fabric nightclub, EC1M 6HJ

History of Clerkenwell Clerkenwell is an area of London that is rich in heritage, much of which is still visable today, from a Carthusian priory to a 16th century archway. Originally adopting its name from Clerks’ Well in Farringdon Lane, Clerkenwell has always been a centre for entertainment - the Middle Ages saw sacred plays performed by clerics in front of Clerks’ Well. The Well can still be visited today and is incorporated into a 1980s building named Well Court. The 17th century saw the area grow into a fashionable district, with notable residents including Oliver Cromwell. The Duke of Northumberland and other aristocrats flocked to the area, drawn by its theatres, tea gardens, and spas. Home to the famous ‘gin craze’, the 1700s saw the people of Clerkenwell distilling their own gin at home to avoid the alcohol tax put in place in free houses. The quality of gin was poor and would often be flavoured with turpentine. It was here that Alexander Gordon, the founder of Gordon’s Dry London Gin, opened his first distillery in 1769, followed

40

by other distilleries such as Tanqueray, Nicholson’s, Booth’s and Langdales’s, who clustered together to take advantage of Clerkenwell’s natural springs. Clerkenwell, the suburb beyond the confines of the London Wall, has had a colourful past with its infamous reputation for brothel-keeping, and was described in Sugden’s Topographical Dictionary as ‘the most disreputable street in London, a haunt of thieves and loose women’. It was also home to the Middlesex House of Detention, built on the site of two earlier prisons: the Clerkenwell Bridewell for convicted prisoners, and the New Prison for those awaiting trial. The Bridewell closed in 1794 and its functions were taken over by the Coldbath Fields Prison at Mount Pleasant. The New Prison was rebuilt in 1818 and in 1847, its name was changed to the House of Detention – a space not generally open to the public. This venue will host Clerkenwell Design Week’s Platform, a show that recognises some of the world’s most exciting up-andcoming design talent. Exploiting the venue’s atmospheric

architecture, Platform creates a stunning backdrop for a curated collection of international and cutting-edge design. The Industrial Revolution changed the area greatly. It became a centre for breweries, distilleries and the printing industry, gaining a reputation for creative and independent craft shops – which is largely what it is still known for now. After the Second World War, Clerkenwell suffered from industrial decline and many of its industries fell apart, though a general revival and gentrification process began in the 1980s. Today, Clerkenwell is home to more creative businesses, showrooms and architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, making it truly one of the most important design districts in the world. The fashionable North London hotspot is equipped with many delights: lively Exmouth Market, hip cafes, and indie boutiques, providing a bustling neighbourhood for its young professional residents.
