Introduction We are delighted to share our overview of the many events and fairs taking place during The London Design Festival this year, which is now celebrating its 16th year.
Sustainability is a key theme this year across the Festival: Brixton’s re-using and upcycling projects and Skandium’s eco town house to name but a few.
This is also our first year working with 100% Design and we look forward to welcoming many of you to our preview on Wednesday morning when Thomas Heatherwick will be talking about his plans for Olympia.
Landmark projects which we are particularly looking forward to seeing are Kellenberger-White: Alphabet in Broadgate for a glorious explosion of colour and typography, and Time for Tea by Scholten & Baijings at Fortnum & Mason – we will certainly be stopping by for a relaxing daily tea ritual.
There are now eleven official Design Districts, all buzzing and densely packed with activity that can be easily explored on foot. New this year are West Kensington, Marylebone, Fitzrovia, Victoria and Regent Street & St James’s. It is always worth heading over to The V&A and this year sees its 10th anniversary of serving as the Festival’s hub. A highlight will be Pentagram’s collaboration with 14-18 NOW exploring the concept of camouflage known as ’dazzle’ pertinently linked to the centenary of First World War; whilst MultiPly, an interactive modular maze-like installation in The Sackler Courtyard, will be a standout exploration of sustainable domestic architecture. Michael Anastassiades’ ‘A Fountain for London’ is a superb legacy project aimed to reduce disposable plastic bottles.
As always key destinations to visit include London Design Fair in the east to Design Junction at South Bank; and in the west: Decorex at Syon Park (which is perfect for those of you arriving this weekend since it starts Sunday 16th) and Focus/18 at Chelsea Harbour. I personally cannot wait to visit Es Devlin’s lions in Trafalgar Square created in partnership with Google Arts & Culture. We will no doubt see many of you at events, opening and parties over the next ten days. Judy Dobias

OPENING EVENT:
STUDYING PUBLIC LIFE THROUGH DATA
MONDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER | 18.30—20.30 Join us for an evening talk celebrating the opening of our exhibition The Data and Life of Great Future Cities, which highlights the role of data mining in studying how people use and experience cities. Together with Fabio Duarte, Research Scientist, MIT Senseable City Lab, we’ll be exploring Urban Computing, an emerging field combining computer science and urban planning, through some of the projects featured in the exhibition.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: THE DATA AND LIFE OF GREAT FUTURE CITIES
FREE ADMISSION. 15TH SEPTEMBER 2018 — 26TH JANUARY 2019
Inspired by the book ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities’ by pioneering urbanist, activist and writer, Jane Jacobs, this exhibition highlights the potential for data mining to enhance our understanding of public spaces and how they’re used. Furthermore, the exhibition also puts the practice of city planning and building, and how we’ve sought to understand public life, into a historical context. Research by the MIT Senseable City Lab will be shown alongside other projects which explore how data could be the key to better urban design.
