Camrosians shouldn’t be alarmed over the next little while if they see great streams of water coming from their nearby fire hydrant. Chances are it will be staff from Camrose Public Works cleaning the water mains as part of the

City’s Unidirectional Flushing Program. Unidirectional Flushing is a method of cleaning the water mains through a network of flushing sequences with the water being discharged from a fire hydrant. The benefits of the program include maintaining and potentially improving the water quality level in the water mains. Flushing can reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, improve colour and turbidity, control corrosion, and restore flow and pressures in the water distribution system. Flushing will generally occur from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for most areas. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration from the minerals and sediments that are being flushed out. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. Questions or concerns in regards to the unidirectional flushing program should be directed to the City of Camrose engineering department at 780-672-4428.

University of Alberta Augustana Campus vice dean Richard Johnson presented certificates of achievement to fifty-seven Grades 2 and 3 students at the commencement of the third Reading University program July 29. Johnson told the students they were a welcome addition to the Augustana campus for the last month. "You have brought a special kind of life to a place that can be pretty dead in the summer." Johnson congratulated the students on the work they have done at Reading University to become better readers. "You have come through a demanding course and you have improved your skills at one of the most important things that people do every day," he said. "Now not only will you find it easier to do your school work but I hope that you will find reading more fun. "I hope you will be able to lose yourself in a good book." Reading University is a summer literacy program designed to help young readers get the basics

they need in order to succeed at school and beyond. The program was open by special invitation to children who need extra time and support to increase their basic literacy skills. "One of the goals of the Battle River School Division is to have all students reading at their programmed level by the end of Grade 3, thus the Grades 2 and 3 students," said Reading University principal and Battle River School Division assistant superintendent Ray Bosh. "Reading University very much strengthens this goal." Reading University's themes for 2011 were supported by activities that included reading books, word games, acting out skits, research on computers, picture drawing, using maps and reading signs to plan routes for visits to museums or airports. The program was designed to be interesting, engaging and fun – to help children not only embrace their skills but also become more excited about learning. Reading University is offered by the Battle River Community Foundation as a community

leadership initiative in partnership with the Battle River School Division. Battle River Community Foundation provides fifty per cent of the funding in the form of flow-through grants from generous donors. "We feel this is a program that will have significant long term benefits for the community," said Battle River Community Foundation board chair Blain Fowler. The Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta provides space and meals for the students, while the Camrose Adult Learning Council and the Camrose Adult Read and Write Program offer advice to parents on how to help their children to continue to read at home. Bosh said the Reading University program would not have the profile it has without the support of Augustana. "It is one thing to have a reading program, but to have it in this setting really sets it apart. Both Bosh and Johnson said it would be nice to see the students at Augustana in ten years.

City of Camrose administration expresses concerns about budget By Dan Jensen

So much for the best laid plans. City of Camrose general manager, financial services Diane Urkow told City council July 26 that there is concern regarding the ability to operate within the 2011 budget. "As of June 30, expenses resulting from snow removal were significantly over budget," said Urkow. While the snow removal budget has been the major culprit, administration has also identified other variances between what was projected for costs and the actual figures. Engineering services has had to deal with mold remedial

costs of $45,000, planning and development permits for the first six months of 2011 were $7,267 versus the actual budget of $40,000, and revenue from Camrose Golf Course green fees is down because of the wet summer. On the other side, the revenues at the Edgeworth Centre were higher due to the hosting of the Scotties curling championship. City council has asked administration to prepare a report for its September 6 committee of the whole meeting with recommendations on how to reduce the deficit. "We need to see if there are projects that can be postponed

for a year," said Councillor John Howard. "I would hate to see us deplete our reserves." Council will wait until later in the year before making a decision on what to do with the deficit in the snow removal budget. Options that have been suggested by Engineering Services general manager Elvis Riou include coming up with funding from current operations or dipping into reserves. City council must approve any expenditures that are above budget by $50,000. The accumulated City of Camrose reserves are estimated at approximately $2.2 million.

Snowbirds perform over Camrose

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds put on a spectacular show over the Edgeworth Centre last Thursday. By Dan Jensen

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds made a good impression with their performance high over the Edgeworth Centre July 28. "We've heard nothing but good things," said Camrose Flying Club volunteer Jadene Mah. "A lot of the residences in the seniors homes got a really good view." The fifteen-minute show

included the famous Maple Leaf, in which the jets line up nine across before splitting off in different directions, and the Battle of Britain, a segment that is designed to show the different things the jets can do in a nonaerobatic format. Afterwards, Snowbirds' pilots signed autographs for ninety minutes at the Camrose Airport. "The feedback that we

received was very positive," said Chris Hope, who is in his second year as Snowbirds' lead pilot and his fifth year with the squadron, after flying in the number five position in 2003, 2004 and 2005. "People were quite enthusiastic and we had a lot of people come up to us wanting to talk." Hope said it is fun to see kids who watch the Snowbirds get enthused about aviation.

"I was about the age many of them are the first time I saw the Snowbirds and I remember saying to myself at the time that that is what I wanted to do, so to have the opportunity to potentially influence them is outstanding." The Snowbirds were the special guests of honour at a Kids' Picnic at the Camrose Airport July 29. "We had about 350 tickets

that were picked up from the Wild Rose Co-op," said Mah. "I don't think there were any that were left." Serving as Canadian ambassadors, the Snowbirds demonstrate the high level of professionalism, teamwork, excellence, discipline and dedication inherent in the women and men of the Air Force and the Canadian Forces.

Snowbirds' pilot Robert Chagnon living a dream By Dan Jensen

Canadian Forces Snowbird's pilot Robert Chagnon is living a dream. "To actually get the job as an advance and safety pilot with the Snowbirds was quite the thrill," said Chagnon, or "Shaggy" to his friends. After joining the Snowbirds last July, Chagnon, who is from Montreal, spent the winter getting familiar with what is expected of him during, before and after the team's performances. He joined the Snowbirds again for pre-season training this past March and has been with the team ever since. Chagnon is content with the fact that he isn't one of the nine pilots who performs the aerobatic maneuvres for which the Snowbirds are so well known. "I am 48 years old now and coming 49 in the new year and I just don't think I would be able to do it," he said. "It is really hard on the body to do the things that these younger guys do, and I am honest enough with myself to know that I am beyond that time. "The nerves are there, I just don't think the body would follow." The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are approximately half way through their 65 show schedule that has taken them as far east as Nova Scotia and as far west as Vancouver. In Ottawa on Canada Day, they performed their famous "Maple Leaf Split" in front of thousands of appreciative flag waving Canadians. "We're always amazed at the response we get from communities," said Snowbirds' pub-

Snowbirds pilot Robert Chagnon joined the team a year ago.

lic affairs officer Captain Marc Velasco. "It is challenging flying across Canada with the number of shows that we do but the response that we get from local folks when they come to see us is very energizing. "Everyone is very happy to see us and is very excited to watch our show. "We are honoured to be able to represent Canada and the Canadian Forces." While spectators in Camrose

didn't get to see the usual loops, rolls and upside down maneuvres that are part of the aerobatic shows, they were able to watch as the Snowbirds flew at high speeds in tight formation, with wings that were just a metre or two apart. "Sometimes, when you are performing directly over people's heads, you can't do the aerobatic shows," said Velasco. "We want to put first and foremost the safety of the spectators, the pilots and

the technicians on the ground, and ensure that we are doing everything within the regulations that are put before us." Along with their two performances in the sky, the Snowbirds took the time to meet with Camrose youth during a kids' picnic on Friday afternoon, as well as sign autographs for fans. "At pretty much every site we visit we get together with someone," said Velasco. "To the kids, specifically, we are proud to

present a message of inspiration. We want the kids to follow their dreams, just like we did when we were young and first saw the Snowbirds fly." The Snowbirds fly the Canadair CT-114 Tutor, a Canadianbuilt jet used by the Canadian Forces as its basic pilot training aircraft until 2000. The Tutor weighs approximately 7170 lbs (3260 kg) and is powered by a J-85 engine producing 2,700 pounds of thrust. Top speed of the aircraft, with smoke tanks attached, is 412 knots (470 mph or 750 km/h). Modifications that have been made for the Snowbirds include a smoke generating system, a unique paint scheme for added crowd appeal, and a highly tuned engine to enhance engine response in low level flying. "They were made with two seats so the instructor could demonstrate all the controls to his students," said Velasco. "The student would then be able to repeat everything afterwards while the instructor watched." Snowbirds' pilots are very well educated, with four years of university, followed by two or three years of pilot training. In order for them to be selected to the team they must have spent three to four years as a pilot in the military, either on helicopters, transport planes or jet fighters. "They need to have a certain amount of time under their belts before they can apply for our team," said Velasco. "We get many applications from throughout the country but only a few are brought in for a tryout."

By Murray Green

This June, Camrose County approved the development concept for the Round Hill Railway Development. The development includes three large concept lots. Council authorized administration to investigate green space options and come up with a final design concept. The final design concept would include lot sizing, municipal infrastructure and utility costs, and green space models. "Council can decide whether to go ahead or not," said administrator Steve Gerlitz. "We currently have $737,248 in the Future Municipal Reserve Account, of which $250,000 is dedicated to the Round Hill project. If we don't go ahead, we can continue to cut the grass as usual." It is recommended that some preliminary engineering be completed prior to the Final Design Engineering. In doing so, the county will have more opportunity to refine the site layouts (residential and commercial) and ultimately segue into detailed design. The preliminary engineering will include a service estimate of the residential block and the commercial lot. This will give the county some very good costing models to determine whether it is a viable venture without going to the large expense. The report will cost $27,000, with funding to come from the Future Municipal Reserve Account (Round Hill Development) in the 2011 budget. Councillor Doug Lyseng made the motion to start the design process, which was carried by council. Tree removal

The playground that will be built next year has run into a snag. The proposed site near the ball diamond has a high pressure gas line underneath it, and the county has decided to build the playground into a treed area. The new site is directly north of the picnic shelter. Camrose County has budgeted $60,000 to build a new playground in the hamlet of Armena. The total site will be approximately 25 meters by 30 meters, in order to allow enough room for the main structure, the spring mates and appropriately sized encroachment zones. Lyseng moved that council hire Cherdan Construction to remove the trees and stumps at the site of the new Armena playground at a cost of $9,875, with funding to come from the Recreation Reserve Account in the budget. All material will be hauled away.

Joanne Hildebrandt, Owner JoJos Maze Craze and 18 Hole Mini Golf

…a special summer feature In Camrose and area a signifi cant number of women hold positions of power and prestige. Many others own their own small businesses or are key players in their respective companies. The Camrose Booster is profi ling some of the best, the brightest and the most prominent women who work, employ and lead in the community of which we are all so proud. Watch for profi les in future issues of the home team paper! If you would like to be a part of our next women in business issue, please call The Booster, 780.672.3142 and ask for Mike, Jeff, Sue or Ron.

Joanne Hildebrant always knew that her ideal career would involve the outdoors, fresh air and plenty of exercise. Four years ago, when she and husband Ken moved to their new location just 10 min. outside of Camrose, they had the perfect space to implement their ideas – and JoJos Maze Craze was born! In short order, an eight-acre trivia corn maze was prepared. Next came a beautiful and challenging 18 hole mini golf course – complete with water and sand hazards! A petting zoo was also an absolute must for Joanne and husband Ken. “So many kids today don’t get any exposure to these kinds of animals,” she states. Certainly the menagerie of mini donkeys, goats, sheep, rabbits and peacocks always elicits huge smiles from the children who get to spend some time with them. This year, two new attractions were added. A 20’ giant infl atable slide and an inflatable bounce house provide lots of fun for kids and adults! Open from the May long weekend (the corn maze opens the August long weekend) until the first snowfall, Joanne is always adding new looks and ideas to her family friendly retreat. Picnic areas and fire pits are available. Har-Fest (third weekend of Sept.) is an annual celebration of the season and includes a farmers’ market and a whole day’s worth of fun activities. Visitors are also encouraged to pick their own pumpkins from the abundant pumpkin patch. Birthday parties, Scouts and Guides, family reunions, staff parties and school groups are always welcomed at JoJos. As Joanne points out, “Our goal was to have something fun and economical for families and groups of all ages, and I think we’ve accomplished that.”

Wow! In the last 13 years this company has come a long way and I have had the pleasure of being part of it for the past 6 years. We have grown as a company but more importantly we have grown to be a bigger part of our local community. Yes, I can tell you all the great services we provide like in-store repairs, on-site service, setting up servers and networks, maintenance contracts and installation of rural internet. We are a retail store as well and can provide our clients with all special order items. But what we want to do is thank all of our customers for believing in us because they are who made us successful. We appreciate everyone who shops locally to make our city a success and hopefully everyone is doing their part. The fun part of my job this last year has been volunteering for the RBC Cup Steering Committee. I worked in local sponsorship and promoting our retail community to the thousands of visitors that were here for the event. Thank you to those businesses that participated. I have also been fortunate to represent 2nd Floor Computers Inc. by presenting scholarships to deserving students, giving support to The Bailey Theater and offi ciating at the Women’s Provincial Curling. If we all give back to our community we will all benefit.

Hearing Sense

We rely on our sense of hearing to communicate on a daily basis, and if it is compromised in any way, so is our quality of life. Helen Keller may have said it best: “Loss of vision means losing contact with things, but loss of hearing means losing contact with people.” Statistics show that one in ten Canadians have some form of hearing loss and over 50% of people over 65 have some degree of hearing loss. Having owned and operated Hearing Sense since its inception and as a Hearing Aid Practitioner for the past thirty years, Brenda knows the importance of proper hearing. “To help someone hear better and improve their quality of life is challenging and extremely rewarding” says Brenda. “Total commitment to improving our clients’ hearing is our number one priority and it is very gratifying when someone recognizes our commitment and refers their family and friends to us.” If you think you have a hearing problem, Brenda invites you to make an appointment for a hearing evaluation and consultation. The evaluation will be done to find out what type and degree of hearing loss you may have and the consultation will give you information on possible solutions. There are a wide variety of hearing aids that are virtually unnoticeable in size including the soon-to-be-available Soundlens which is the WORLD’S first invisible-in- the-canal hearing aid. Hearing Sense has been a family owned and operated business for over 40 years. Brenda’s mother first opened the Red Deer location in 1968 and since then Brenda has added offices in Camrose and Wetaskiwin which are now being managed by her sister, Gina Shiels, also a Registered Hearing Aid Practitioner.

Susan Presetsky, Manager

Nutter’s Bulk & Natural Foods

Walking downtown, you may have noticed a new business on main street. This bright store-front/offi ce is the new home of the offi ces of “Refl exology by Diane” and “Camrose Ideal Weight Loss Center.” Diane Calahoo has been doing refl exology for over 10 years and was very aware of how her clients’ state of health aff ected their quality of life. When the opportunity to start Camrose Ideal Weight Loss Center came along, she and husband Chris didn’t hesitate. They combined both businesses under one roof and Diane couldn’t be happier. “I love what I do,” she simply states. “Seeing our clients making great health changes in their lives, reaching their goals and maintaining their new level of happiness is just wonderful.” Camrose Ideal Weight Loss Center is based on the principle of the Ideal Protein weight loss method which is a muscle sparing fat-targeting four-step protocol, helping clients reach their goal weight. Clients get weekly support sessions from their accredited Ideal Protein health care professional, and receive weight and measurement progress analysis as well as ongoing nutritional education. Diane also firmly believes in the age-old adage of practicing what you preach. Using the principles and supplements of her Weight Loss Center, she lost 47 lbs. and has maintained her ideal weight. “Our products have wonderful flavours and textures, and our clients (including myself) think they taste great!”

Walking into Nutter’s one of the friendly faces you’re sure to see is Susan Presetsky, manag er of the Camrose location for the past seven years. “Previously,” says Susan, “I worked at a Nutter’s store for many years and really enjoyed it, so when the opportunity arose to manage the Camrose store, I said yes!” And while there is still a perception that Nutter’s is strictly a bulk food company, Susan says, “It’s just not so. In the last five years, I have seen a defi nite shift away from the traditional Nutter’s products, especially candy.” She is quick to point out that while Nutter’s still carries baking items, “and, of course, nuts,” they also carry an extensive selection of vitamins and supplements as well as a wide variety of organic and gluten-free foods. She notes, “We are continuing to bring in items that are more natural and healthier including personal care and household products.” Susan believes Nutter’s has one of the b est vitamin and supplement selections in the Camrose area. “Our vitamin manager, Yvonne, is a fountain of knowledge, and will always take the time to listen to any health care questions you may have.” “Customer service is our #1 priority,” states Susan. “We provide ongoing training for our staff because more knowledge for them means better service for our customers. Our advantage over the big box stores is that we know many of our customers by name and will always take the time to listen to their concerns.”

Letters to the Editor Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 500 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Dear Editor:

Recently I had a GIC which matured. When re-investing it, I

had to take a three-year term to get a mere 2.15 per cent. At the same time I had a notice that the rent would be going up five per cent. Who is making the money? When some folks retire they have only the interest on their money to depend on. Now, how long will the interest (even on a large amount of money) pay the bills if everything goes up five per cent at a time? At such point you will be eating on your capital. When I was a financial planner with A.G.F. Mutual, several people were selling their farms and (as they said) were going to give the proceeds to their kids.

When I advised against such an arrangement they said, "Oh, our kids will look after us." Ha Ha! Don't kid yourself! If people do not use their heads, and look after themselves, no one else is going to do it for them. Look at the mess the entire world is in, just because they did not use their heads and look to the future. They ignored all the warning signs and kept on spending money that they did not have. Well, there is only one way for this to end, and it is happening now, before our very eyes. Mary E. Ringwall Warke, Camrose

Provincial government's land bills will hurt economy, says Edmonton lawyer lawyer Wilson. "It restricts a landowner's right to compensation and removes the landowner's access to the courts."

NEW BUSINESS IN CAMROSE

Mayor Marshall Chalmers (third from right) participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Hummingbird Lane Scrapbooking Supplies July 6. Holding the ribbon were owner Abby Hafso and her children, Rayna and Shelby (centre), City Center Camrose representative Dan Olofson (left), Chamber of Commerce vice president Dawn Anderson (second from right) and City of Camrose economic development assistant Val King.

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler

Blessed are the satisfied Blessed are those who are satisfied with what they have! Those were my thoughts when I overheard a conversation in the hall outside my room at Rosealta Lodge. A rustling of plastic bags, which I heard through my door which was slightly ajar, made me aware that a housekeeper was tending the waste container. Then I heard a lady’s voice ask, “Don’t you get tired of having your head in a garbage can?” “Oh no,” was the bright and lively reply. “I love my job. I just love my job,” she repeated with great emphasis on ‘love’. And then she added, “I’ll never retire,” with emphasis on ‘never’, explaining that “if I retired I’d never get a day off and I love my day off, too.” The genuine sincerity and cheerfulness in her voice plus the interesting and somewhat conflicting logic of her words, made me laugh. It was music to my ears to hear someone say, “I love my work,” (and incidentally, I hear that a lot where I live). It is obvious that there is a difference between working to live, and living to work. That’s why I thought: blessed are they who are satisfied with what they have. About the same time I read a totally unrelated story in the Edmonton Journal, (Wed., July 27, 2011). It was written by Elizabeth Payne about an elderly couple, who, one year ago, won a 6/49 lottery worth over $11 million. They were aged 75 and 78, and lived modestly in a 147-year-old house and drove a 13-yearold car. Winning wasn’t a big event beyond the local area but what the retired couple did with the $11 million became an international story because the world thought it so unusual. The couple gave away the entire winnings, to various charities, family and friends. They spent none of it on themselves, explaining simply that they were satisfied and contented with what they already had. With The Journal still in my hand, I thought about this philanthropic couple and sensed that giving so unselfishly had brought them a full measure of peace and happiness, the kind which no amount of money can buy. How blessed are those who are satisfied with what they have! How blessed are those who have discovered the quiet joy and satisfaction of giving!

The government's refusal to act upon calls to reverse its land bill package – known as Bills 19, 24, 36, and 50 – could spell the end of the Alberta economy as we know it. “Because the PC government is absolutely not listening to what thousands of Alberta ranchers and farmers are saying about the land bills it has passed, which is laws openly hostile toward property rights in the province, an extensive series of rallies and meetings are going to be held across Alberta this summer,” said Keith Wilson, a renowned Edmonton area lawyer and landowner representative who serves as the Alberta Policy Chair at CAEPLA. Mr. Wilson was a guest speaker at a Landowners Against Bills Society of Alberta meeting on July 26 at the Daysland Community Hall. "The province’s leading industrial and food processing associations are also on record saying that unless the government reconsiders its actions, as a direct result of just one of these bills, thousands of jobs will be lost and the province’s food processing industry will suffer major and permanent loss," said Mr. Wilson. "When the power bills start to triple in cost, most high volume users will move out of the province. Each time a business or individual jumps off the grid, the rest of the people will have to pick up the slack in costs. That means you and I will pay more." The Bills are without precedent in Canada, or even in the free societies of western democracies. “Bill 36 alone, gives politicians in the Cabinet Room the central planning powers to say what every piece of private property and Crown land in the province can and cannot be used for. The Bill gives Cabinet the power to override all local municipal governments when it comes to saying what a piece of land can and cannot be used for, or what its designated use will be. The Bill even gives Cabinet the power to unilaterally, and without cause, terminate or rescind legal agreements, leases and approvals held by property owners and Alberta businesses, and then

deny them access to the courts, legal procedures and fair compensation,” said Mr. Wilson. To put it in perspective, Bill 36 allows politicians to terminate or rescind grazing leases, water licenses, development contracts, oil leases, permits for dairy barns and feedlots. "Cabinet’s decisions trump every decision made by a local municipality and by every provincial regulatory body." Municipal governments such as the City of Camrose or Camrose County would have their funding stopped if they don't follow the dictatorship of Cabinet.

The Electric Statutes Amendment Act, Bill 50, allows all Albertans to pay companies (Altalink and ATCO) the full cost of building transmission lines and then gives them the lines to own. "The $16 billion cost is paid for by the users, meaning you and me. These lines are built on a cost plus nine per cent rate of return on investment basis. The company that builds them has no risk and has a guaranteed return on their investment," added Mr. Wilson. "The province's major industries have gone public, saying that this is a massive overbuild. Some companies will have no choice, but to relocate outside the province because the net effect will be to triple power rates." The government confirmed that it wants the new lines to export power at the cost of all Albertans. Bill 24

The Carbon Capture and Storage Statutes Amendment Act allows the government to pump CO 2 underground into the pore space. "The old landowner's rights says you own the land from the top soil to the centre of Bill 19 the Earth," explained Mr. Wil"Bill 19 is essentially a way son. "The government wants to for the government to work take away your land rights so around the Expropriation Act," said Mr. Wilson. "It gives cabinet it can own the pore space and store carbon. Bill 24 unilaterally the power to freeze a person's land for long periods of time, usu- takes ownership and gives it to the government. It contains legal ally about 20 years, but it can be wording that says no court can much longer, and it makes no requirement that the landowner find this taking to be an exprobe compensated. "When you sum up because no bank is going to it all up, the current provincial lend money in such a situation. government has abandoned the Bill 36 Premier hopeful Ted Morton fundamental principles of a modern democracy." led the charge in the Alberta He encourages all Albertans Land Stewardship Act, Bill 36. to be informed and learn the "It gives the Cabinet sitting in impacts from the Bills. Housing projects still on schedule By Dan Jensen

The new Wild Rose Affordable Housing development is getting closer to completion. "We're still aiming to have it finished by the end of this year," said Denis Beesley, chief executive officer of The Bethany Group, which will be managing the development. "If we can get over the hump now with the exterior work we will be in a good position to be able to continue with the drywall and the painting. "Once we get that done it is just a matter of finishing up the mechanical and the elevators." The development's exterior will be a combination of masonry and a cement-based Hardie siding. "The siding product that we are using is like vinyl but better quality and has a 25-year warranty," said Beesley. "We wanted to use materials that last a long time and require little maintenance, and felt that this Hardie siding fit the bill. "It has been our experience that vinyl siding doesn't hold up well in the long run on a high-use building." The Wild Rose Affordable Housing development (on the site of the former Wild Rose arena), will have four studio units, 25 one-bedroom units and 20 twobedroom units. Six of the units will be totally barrier-free. The estimated rent for a onebedroom unit, including heat and water will be $570 per month. "The rents will be governed by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and be at least ten per cent below the rent

The Bethany Group CEO Dennis Beesley (right) and housing and community services director Dave Buist look at plans for the Wild Rose Affordable Housing development.

that is charged elsewhere," said Beesley. "We wouldn't be able to increase them without the approval of the Ministry of Housing." The Bethany Group will be placing advertisements in the newspapers once it is ready to accept applications from those who fit under the maximum income guidelines. "The people who are accepted will be told far enough in advance that they will be able to give notice to their current landlords," said Beesley. "We are expecting all the units will be full from day one." The Wild Rose Affordable Housing development has a total cost of approximately $8 million, of which $5.6 million has been provided by the provincial

government through the City of Camrose. The mortgage will be paid by the Bethany Group at a fixed interest rate over a period of 25 years. "The fact that we were able to lock in the interest rate over that period of time will really help the project over the course of its lifetime," said Beesley. The end of 2011 is also being targeted by The Bethany Group for completion of the $18 million Brookside life lease development on the former Bethany Nursing Home site. "We already have about fifty of the seventy units that have been spoken for and expect that more will be sold once we are able to complete the paving of the parking lot and open up a show suite for viewing," said Beesley. "Up until now people have been buying on good faith, without actually being able to see the units. "We're very positive about the sales and are on track or further ahead of where we thought we would be at this time." The Bethany Group will be holding an open house for the Brookside development on the third floor of the Rosehaven building Aug. 19. Brookside will be The Bethany Group's third life lease building, after Lakeside Village and Hillside Village. "Lakeside was the first life lease building in Canada 20 years ago and we have a long history with life leases," said Beesley. "We hope to be able to use that as a model and provide more choice, which is what people seem to want."

City council has approved a Border Paving tender of $247,681 plus GST for the 2011 roadway construction program. Projects will include an asphalt paving overlay on the east bound lanes on 48 Avenue between 41 and 44 Streets (rail underpass), the reconstruction and paving of two lanes abutting 50 Street between 48A and 49 Avenues as a local improvement, and the reconstruction of the lane abutting the Wild Rose Affordable Housing development. Funding for the projects will be provided from the City of Camrose 2011 capital budget and provincial government grants. The budget for the 2011 roadway construction projects was $353,500.

Sorenson happy to see program renewed Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is pleased to see the Harper Government’s support for the renewal of the popular ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program, an initiative helping Canadians save on home improvements and energy costs while improving the environment. “Constituents across my riding have written me asking for the renewal of this program

so they can continue to make energy efficient upgrades to their home,” said Sorenson. “With this program, we are not only helping Canadians save money but also creating thousands of jobs.” From now to March 31, 2012, homeowners may be eligible to receive reimbursements of up to $5,000 to make their homes more energy-efficient. The program could help up to 250,000

Canadian homeowners improve their homes’ energy efficiency and generate as much as $4 billion in economic activity across Canada. Prior to Budget 2011, the Harper Government provided retrofit incentives to over half a million Canadians. Homeowners who participated in the program saved an average of 20 percent on their energy bills.

Central Agencies Home of the Week

Well kept home with great patio

Darrell Rosland By Murray Green

You'll be impressed with this well kept home. Don't worry about renovations, this home is movein ready. This dandy bungalow is close to downtown area and schools. It would make an excellent home for retirement or as a starter for a young couple. The front entry leads to a large and inviting living room with comfortable carpet flooring, which could easily be returned to the hardwood that lies underneath. The bright white family kitchen offers a cheery atmosphere and is loaded with plenty of cupboard space. It also contains a dining area. The large master bedroom features lots of closet space and room for your dresser set. A second bedroom and a main three- piece bathroom are also on the main floor. The developed basement has a large recreation room, ideal for relaxing in front of the television or playing games. Two bedrooms offer privacy for young teens and a three-piece bathroom with an

attractive shower is a nice addition. A cold room and storage space are available on the lower level. The back door leads to a huge wooden deck that is fantastic for summer barbecues or enjoying the sunshine. The mature backyard has a beautiful lawn, a large garden space and a double detached garage. The garden area features plenty of raspberry bushes and rhubarb. The garage is roomy enough for two vehicles plus storage space, which could easily be converted to a workbench area. This home has a maintenance free exterior and features upgrades such as newer windows, furnace, hot water tank and shingles. An open house will be held at this impressive 5321-52 Street home on Thursday, August 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. It is attractively priced to sell at $207,900. If you are unable to attend the open house, contact Darrell Rosland for a tour at: Central Agencies Inc. 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 or 780-679-2170 cell

City holding open house on Municipal Development Plan By Dan Jensen

City council wants to know what you think. Council will be inviting public comments on a draft of a City of Camrose Municipal Development Plan at Mirror Lake Centre Aug. 9. The draft was given first reading July 25. The City of Camrose 2011 Municipal Development Plan provides goals, objectives and high level policies to guide and coordinate future urban growth decisions.

(MSP) and the City of Camrose/ Camrose County Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP), both of which were approved by council in 2010, as well as the Downtown Action Plan that was approved in 2007. "The MSP is the footprint and the basis for this document," said Brenda Hisey, City of Camrose director of development and planning services. "All the goals and objectives from the MSP are in here." To ensure that the high quality of life is continued, the MDP suggests that the City should continue its efforts to facilitate availability and provision of the best possible health care services, educational opportunities, facilities for arts and entertainment, and excellent recreational venues. Sunset clause

The plan will have a sunset clause that requires it to be reviewed by Council before the end of five years. "The document could get lost if it is not calendarized for review," said Councillor John Howard. Every municipality in Alberta with a population over 3,500 is required to have a Municipal Development Plan. Second and third readings of the plan are scheduled for the August 22 meeting of council, following a public hearing.

Round Hill Ag Society making plans for Internet By Murray Green

The Round Hill Agricultural Society is stepping up to help bring Internet service to the area. Bernie Von Tettenborn of the agricultural society approached Camrose County about leasing a small amount of space by the fire hall so the community and surrounding area can receive Internet. Some of the area around the village has trouble receiving signals for phone and Internet service. "The $200 a month rent is bothering us because we are an agricultural society that serves

county residents. We receive $10 for each customer and it would take 20 people just to pay the rent. I would suggest a $25 or $50 amount," said Bernie. "Secondly, if the tower building can be built on the outside of the fire hall, then they don't need access to the inside of the building. They have talked about solar power at some time." Reeve Don Gregorwich explained to council that the planning commission would have to okay the tower. "The application would go in to the

municipal planning meeting on August 20 and then there is a time for an appeal hearing," said administrator Steve Gerlitz. "If there is no appeal, then we are looking at the end of September for construction. If someone appeals, it could be set back to the end of October." The Camrose County planning department received a development permit application from Nowfast Technologies Ltd. in July for the high speed Internet tower and supporting building. The tower materials

and equipment are ready to be installed By charging rent for the use of county land, council felt it was important to have a level playing field for landowners who are receiving payments for use of their land. "With the agreement, the agricultural society will own the equipment for 10 years, but we will not be responsible for maintenance," said Bernie. "The idea is to benefit the community and the agricultural society." Camrose County agreed to enter into an agreement with the Round Hill Agricultural

Society for the use of the Round Hill Fire Hall to erect a 66 foot high speed Internet tower and supporting equipment. It is subject, but not limited to: permission for access shall be given by the Round Hill fire chief prior to entering the building; a five-year term of agreement; rent of $200 month (utilities included) or if no utilities are required then $50 month rent to be charged; a liability insurance of $2,000,000 to be produced, and a successful development permit must accompany this agreement.

Rockets host U12 boys' soccer provincials By Murray Green

The Camrose Rockets U12 boys' soccer team is going to take on teams it has never played before. The undefeated Rockets played in a Tier 4 division during the regular season, but moved up a level to host the Tier 3 provincials at Rudy Swanson Park on August 5 to 7. "There was no Tier 3 division in our league, so we played at the Tier 4 level," explained Rob. "But, we did play a Tier 2 team from the Red DeerLacombe area and we beat them as well. At provincials, I have no idea what to expect." The Rockets started the year blasting their opposition. "The first few games we had were pretty easy, so our team was goal oriented. Then I had to make some corrections. Now, the whole team has bought into starting the plays with the back end," said Rob. "We want to work the ball forward. In the second half, our goals have been generated by spreading out the other team's defence and coming up through the middle." The coaching staff has been

fine tuning the passing game leading up to provincials. "We want to get away from the, "as soon as I get the ball I have to go down the field and score" mentality. We really have a good group of guys and each game two or three different players step up and have a great game. It is easier to coach when you don't have to rely on the same couple of players all of the time." The Rockets are in a tough division and it will likely take at least two wins in three games to advance them into the playoff round. "Our boys enjoy being undefeated and they want to stay that way. They are self motivated to work hard on the weekend," continued Rob. "The fact we didn't have to qualify to reach provincials or the fact we are hosting doesn't make a lot of difference. We are excited to host because we get to show off our great fields and we didn't have a lot of home games, five in total, so this is an opportunity for the boys to play in front of family and friends. Our fans can outnumber the opposition's and that is a bonus."

Members of the Camrose Rockets U12 boys' team include Shawn Morin, Davis Dewalt, Erik Pudlowski, Lewis Reynolds, Jonas Enns, Andrew Hohm, Kayda Livingstone, Eric McPhee, Dylan Boos, Shawn Dallyn, Justin Hoerchel, Dorien Sikstrom, James Davis and Ewan Schellenberg. Rob Boos is the coach of the Rockets, Chris Holm and Kevin Davis are the assistant coaches. Janine Pudlowski is the manager. Camrose plays Fort McMurray on Friday at 5 p.m. on Rudy Swanson Park 1 field. They take on Edmonton on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on RSP 1 and Camrose faces Calgary on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on RSP 2. Playoffs are on Sunday. Camrose is one of 16 teams entered in provincials. Teams include Sunny South, Lethbridge, three from Calgary, Camrose, Big Country, Foothills, two from Edmonton, Peace River, Fort McMurray, Battle River (North Central Alberta), Sherwood Park and one more late addition.

ELLIGOTT CONSTRUCTION LTD. James Davis, left, of the Camrose Rockets, gets into position to stop an opposing player at the Night Classic soccer tournament in Camrose. Both the Camrose Tier 3 U12 teams will be hosting provincials at Rudy Swanson Park on August 5 to 7.

Warriors U12 girls' excited to be at home By Murray Green

The Camrose Warriors U12 girls' soccer team is hosting the Tier 3 provincials at Rudy Swanson Park on August 5 to 7. The Warriors are ready for the challenge of entering provincials. "We had a good season in the CASA (Central Alberta Soccer Association) league this year," said coach Maryn Vermeer. "We haven't won a tournament yet, but we are still improving. The Night Classic was a very good experience for the girls and it was the first time for about half of them. They all had a lot of fun. We have about half first year players and half second year's." Gaining experience for the future is the ultimate goal for the team this season. "I have seen lots of improvement from the start of the year," said Maryn. "They are learning skills and have really come together as a team. The players are improving at the basic skills. Yes, you like to win, but in this age group it is more important to learn. They have to enjoy the

game and have fun and then the rest will come." He lists the eagerness and closeness of the girls as their strengths. "They are a really close bunch of players and get along so well and have fun together. They show commitment and rarely does anyone miss a practice or game," said Maryn. "On the field, I can't say yet. Maybe the strong point is our defence." Hosting the event will provide the players with plenty of experience for many years. "Hosting the event is an honour. We have to be thankful for the nice fields in Camrose. To host you have to have good fields and parents willing to do extra to put on the event," said Maryn. "We were the only team in our league to go, so we went automatically to provincials. We didn't have to fight to get there, but for the girls it will be a big experience. Now we will run into some stiff competition." Camrose will be hosting 25 teams in soccer – nine teams of girls. "Our first goal is to make the medal round, the top four teams.

Then we will see what we can do. Our team is young so again, this is more about learning and working towards winning in the future. Hosting will help us a little. The girls will play better when they sleep in their own beds rather than travel and have fewer distractions. "I really hope to keep this together because they will be good. This year the weather has caused some problems and it has shortened the season. We had to cancel some practices because it was raining or there was lightning." Since the regular season ended, the team has been scrambling to enter tournaments to stay sharp for provincials. "It has been a challenge. We will play in the Sherwood Park tournament on the long weekend to prepare us for the provincials." His daughter Demi is looking forward to provincials. "Going to provincials means your team is pretty good to get there," said Demi. "Hosting is also good because you don't have to travel. Hopefully we will have fans cheering for us." On the road … the automotive section of

Ford Super Duty Far more than the sum of its parts By Dan Jensen

The all-new Ford Super Duty endured more torture testing than any Ford truck before it – including 16 million cumulative kilometres on the most tested power stroke diesel engine ever. A world-class team put it through a groundbreaking battery of computer simulations, lab and real-world tests – running it for thousands of hours on end. In extreme conditions. All to confirm that this truck is far more than the sum of its parts. All new powertrains

The 2011 F-Series Super Duty boasts all-new powertrains, led by the Ford-designed, Ford engineered and Ford-built 6.7 litre Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine, which delivers best-in-class torque of 735 ft.-lb. (at 1,600 rpm) and best-in-class 390 horsepower (at 2,800 rpm) – 85 ft.-lb. and 40 horsepower more than the outgoing product. The new diesel does this with best-in-class fuel economy and biodiesel compatibility up to B20. The all-new 6.2 litre V-8 gasoline engine is also best in class with 385 horsepower and 405 ft.-lb. of torque – 85 more horsepower and 40 ft.-lb. more torque than the current 5.4 V-8 gas engine – combined with class-leading fuel economy and E85 compatibility. Each new engine is mated to the all-new 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission, which has been optimized for the increased torque of the new diesel engine and the higher speeds of the new gas engine. The new transmission features SelectShift Automatic capability, with segment-exclusive Live Drive Power Take Off (PTO) available for diesels. Towing

The 2011 Super Duty builds on its best-in-class towing and payload capability and also offers more towing options from inside the bed. New is the first-ever factory installed and warranted fifth wheel and gooseneck substructure directly attached to the frame. "Our system is factory-installed and comes with a limited warranty from Ford. The electrical connection is mounted in the side of the bed wall, providing a clean installation," said peter Frantzeskakis, vehicle engineer manager. Particularly noteworthy are productivity enhancements to the F-450 pickup to benefit the heaviest-duty trailer tow customers. Unneeded weight was shed, helping to improve fuel economy and top speed. Even with these changes, the F-450 Super Duty pickup maintains its class-leading gross combined weight rating of 33,000 pounds. Ford's lauded Trailer Sway Control (TSC) system joins the Super Duty lineup, giving those customers segment-first capability. TSC is integrated with AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, which now is standard on all single rear wheel configurations. The AdvanceTrac control module uses additional software to monitor the truck's motion when a trailer is attached. TSC can determine from the yaw motion of the truck if the trailer is swaying and take measures – such as applying precise braking or reducing engine torque – to help reduce the trailer sway. For further peace of mind, the available integrated

trailer brake controller, factory-installed and covered by a Ford limited warranty, offers smoother and safer operation due to its ability to interface with multiple vehicle systems. Normal braking is proportional to driver brake pressure for smooth brake stops at all speeds. If the vehicle's Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is engaged, the special trailer brake kicks in to minimize the potential for trailer wheel lockup. In Super Duty trucks with Trailer Brake Control towing trailers with electric brakes, the Ford system can, during a sway event, also apply brakes to the trailer to help stabilize it. Improved ride

In addition to the increased towing capability and improved fuel mileage enabled by the new powertrains, customers of the 2011 Super Duty also benefit from improved ride, handling and steering. The engineering team optimized the frame and suspension, particularly the leaf springs and spring rate, as well as adjusting the internal valving in all the shock absorbers to enable greater towing and payload capability with further ride refinement. The steering gear also is new. The 4x2 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty feature modified steering system geometry to take better advantage of the twin I-beam suspension, which combines the performance of an independent suspension with the durability of a beam axle suspension. Improved response, precision and better on-centre steering and control come from making the steering gear symmetric left to right.

Bold exterior

The new hood of the 2011 Super Duty, with its prominent inverted power dome, complements the new diesel and gasoline engines lurking beneath. "Super Duty" is stamped on the upper grille, with a large Ford oval proudly Jan Nowakowski gracing the front. Lamb Ford Sales Inside, customers will benefit from a new reconfigurable flow-through console that improves the functionality of the truck. Storage space is increased about 60 per cent and at least 70 different configurations are possible. A 12-volt powerpoint is available at the rear of the console and another is located inside the main bin, which is lockable. A 110-volt power inverter is standard with all console configurations. For many customers, the Super Duty cab also serves as a mobile office. Industry-exclusive Ford Work Solutions is part of available technology to help customers stay connected with their businesses from the job site and track tools. A new available 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen allows customers to take full advantage of the 2011 Super Duty's capabilities; an off-road message centre has been added as well. The five-way button on the steering wheel allows customers to navigate through various menu options – several relating to fuel economy and towing convenience – never before available on a Super Duty truck.

Happy Birthday Garret! from all us ‘Old Folks’

Last Tuesday the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society hosted the last event in its summer environmental education series. Guests were treated to presentation by beekeeper and educator Patty Milligan. She told everyone that there are many more types of bees than just honey bees and bumble bees and explained that there were too main types of bees: short-tongued and long- tongued. The shorttongued bees transported pollen and the long- tongued bees both transported pollen and drank the nectar from the flowers. Nectar is a very sugary liquid produced by flowers that honey bees then transport to the hive and through a preservation process similar to canning create honey. Patty not only talked about honey but also led everyone in a honey-tasting in which eight different honeys from around the world were sampled. Patty explained that because of the preservation process employed by the bees that when stored at room temperature honey will never spoil or go bad. More information on honey and on Patty can be found at www.lolacanola.com. The stewardship society would like to thank everyone who has attended our programs throughout the summer. As well we would like to say a huge thank you to the City of Camrose, Wal-mart, Sobeys, Safeway and M&M Meats for donating either time or supplies or both.

On the road … U16 girls' soccer team reap three golds

www.selmacsales.com CUB CADET QUALITY... ONCE AND FOR ALL!

Submitted

The Camrose U16 girls' Titans soccer team has been coming up gold this summer. Although this team has played together for several summers, every year comes with its challenges. Oddly enough this year the team has struggled to find a tournament that has a division in which to play. The Titans play in Edmonton Minor Soccer League Tier 2/3 division competing with teams twice a week May through July. The first tournament of the summer was the Night Classic hosted by Camrose. The Titan U16 girls took the gold while the U16 boys' Titans team and the U14 girls' team both captured silver. The Night Classic is always a fantastic tournament even if you sleep in our own bed! Titan girls participated in the Red Deer City July Classic soccer tournament. Camrose secured a 2-1 win in the opening game against the Red Deer Tier 1 U14 girls' team. Second game against Edmonton SW Sting was a convincing 7-1 victory for the Titans. The semifinal game against Saskatoon was a strong showing for Camrose where they wore down their opponents till the 2-0 final whistle. The final game against Red Deer United was a battle for both teams. Camrose scored with 15 minutes remaining in the second but not to be outdone Red Deer came back to score on a breakaway with five minutes left. The team goes to penalty kicks. The first five take their shot, but alas the teams are still tied. The next six shooters are in sudden death and all six get their turn at the goal. It came down to the goalkeeper on goal keeper as United goalkeeper challenged Titans' keeper. As the shot sailed over the cross bar the Titans screamed with excitement as they realized they had captured gold. “In all my years of playing and coaching I have never seen PKs go all 11 shooters. Never," said coach Paul Stone. “We are very proud of the team. They played their defensive style game and frustrated all the teams we faced." Spruce Grove tournament July 16 and 17 was the team’s last tournament before provincials. The Titans played West End Raiders and Spruce Grove Saints twice. After the four games Titans had beat West End Raiders twice with scores of 4-0 both games and they split the games with the Saints. The Titans took home gold with the better record with only two goals against. “Defensive ball control is how the Titans play the game and how they win tournaments,” said Paul. With provincials in August the team has a couple of weeks to continue to train and prepare to meet the top teams in the province. With this year’s provincials being held in Coaldale, the team will have to show up with their game faces on to come away with a successful season finale.

PHOTO CLASSIFIED ADS

A picture is worth 1,000 words!

For Want Ad service, please phone 780-672-3142 before six on Friday Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Augustana athletics summer camps set By Murray Green The summer isn't spent entirely on vacations for the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus coaches. The Vikings' coaches and athletes lead summer camps so younger athletes can become better players. "Vikings' sport camps bring great training opportunities to the Camrose area," said Greg Ryan, Director of Athletics. "For any age group athlete this type of training will help increase their level of coordination. Increased coordination is one of the most important types of training for young athletes. Athletes will receive camp gifts, which may include a T-shirt and/or a basketball. Augustana conducts a Boys’ Basketball Summer Camp, and there are day and evening sessions at JuniorSenior High Girls’ Basketball for ages 16 to 19. The boys' camp is held from August 15 to 18. The girls' camps take place from August 22 to 25. Junior high players are encouraged to take the day camp. A camp for players aged 16 to 21 goes August 12 to 14. A similar camp for volleyball (co-ed) skills is for ages 12 to 18. A Volleyblast camp is held from August 7 to 11. The camp gives athletes an opportunity to learn about jump

training, advanced team play and sharpening their skills. The camp will teach the finer points of how to maximize your ability at the position you play. Each camper receives a camp T-shirt. The camp runs from August 26 to 28. Register online for all Augustana camps at: www. vikings.augustana.ca . For Volleyblast registration, go to: www.volleyblast.com. For more information contact Cathy Davis at: 780- 679- 1195 or cdavis@augustana.ca . Vikings Golf Tournament The third annual Vikings Golf Tournament will be held on September 10. An 11 a.m. shotgun start begins the golfing and dinner and a silent auction will begin at 3 p.m. It is a four-person, Las Vegas-style scramble. Your registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, golf cart, tee gift, snacks and many opportunities to win prizes. Proceeds of the tournament will help endow the Brett Binder Athletic Scholarship for student-athletes at Augustana with superior academic standing, in memory of the 19-year-old teammate who died in 2007 after a two-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

where they can win cash awards for themselves and their school. “The students have incredible ideas on how to improve our local environment and we are committed to helping them make their ideas happen,” added Metheral. The key to the success of the CFW program relies in taking action after the contest. All students are encouraged to implement their idea. Agrium donates $20,000 to help students' ideas become reality.

Agrium’s Caring for our Watersheds (CFW) program is the proud recipient of a 2011 Alberta Emerald Award in the Education: Non-formal category. “The Emerald Award is like winning an Oscar for environmental stewardship in Alberta. It is a huge accomplishment to win this prestigious award and we are very honoured,” said Lindsey Metheral, Agrium program coordinator. “The Caring for our Watersheds program continues to grow, thanks to our community partners who are dedicated to mentoring the students on the state of their local watershed.” Empowering Students to Bring Their Ideas to Life

CFW was started in The Battle River Watershed, with Battle River Community Foundation being one of the first financial sponsors. It is a curriculum-based, environmental program for students across Alberta that empowers them to turn their ideas into realistic solutions. The program consists of a written proposal submitted by teams of students who have researched

Agrium president and chief executive officer Mike Wilson believes the Caring for our Watersheds program is beneficial not only to our environment but to the communities where it operates. "What better way to help grow the next generation but by engaging them and asking for help in seeking solutions in our communities," he said. This was the 20th year that the Emerald Awards have taken place.

Starting the August long weekend, the corn labyrinth is ready and so is the challenge at JoJo's Maze Craze. Finding your way around a corn maze can be fun for the whole family. "This year we are offering three different ways to help navigate your way through seven acres of winding paths and dead ends," said Joanne Hildebrandt, owner of JoJo's Maze Craze. "The design of a scarecrow was cut in about a month and a half ago. We didn't get any hail, but it is a little shorter than last year." Last year the corn hit 14 feet in some places. However, corn has been known to grow as much as six inches in a day with the right temperatures. "The majority is about six feet. We are excited about it. It is a trivia course where you have to answer questions to pick up clues. We are offering GPS systems this year, so that might be fun to try for a lot of people to find their way around. Whether you use your GPS to match with our coordinates, putting the map together or answering trivia, you are going to find

fun and fresh air all while getting lost," said Joanne. "One thing I'm still working on is finding different pieces of a puzzle." She is going to take an aerial picture this year to see how her design turned out. "Brett Young seed suppliers sponsored the corn this year and their name will be part of the maze as well." An 18 hole mini golf course was started last year and designed with all age groups in mind. "It appeals to all ages, with some easy and difficult holes. Set right next to the corn maze, with easy access, the ranch theme, beautiful landscaping and water feature make it not just a place to improve your handicap, but a place to relax and enjoy your day." This year, the maze has added two inflatables for even more fun. "We added a tiger bounce house and a 20-foot wave slide, which the children are just loving. Also, the UFA has helped us with Ken's Critters. We don't like to call it a petting zoo because not all of the animals are tame. We have a wide variety from Wally the wallaby to yaks."

JoJos has pumpkins growing for the annual Harv-Fest. "It is a celebration for the fall. I remember when I was young and we celebrated the end of the harvest season. We have one fee for all of the activities on the day. It was a huge success last year." This year, the event will take place on September 24. Joanne didn't keep track of visitors but estimated about 350 people went through the maze last year. "We can go until the frost and then you lose the leaves and the hidden trails. Then we just turn the children loose and then can run wherever they want," said Joanne. "I love the maze because it is fun, you have fresh air and it is something the whole family can do together." Joanne said that she comes up with the ideas and her husband Ken does all of the work to make it happen. To visit the corn maze take Highway 26 east of Camrose and follow the signs. Canadian government taking action to protect citizenship Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot

Our Conservative government is taking action to protect the integrity of Canadian Citizenship by revoking approximately 1,800 Citizenships from individuals who did not choose Canada as home but instead are using our country as a ‘pit-stop’ of convenience. We are pursuing those persons who have obtained their Canadian citizenship through fraudulent means. Canada is one of the most desirable destinations in the world for immigrants. Our peace-loving and law-abiding population has built a prosperous nation with many opportunities. As well, we enjoy health and social benefits at home and a passport that is welcomed virtually anywhere on earth. As such,

there are many nefarious people targeting our nation and looking to take advantage of our generosity and the innocent people genuinely trying to immigrate to Canada. We are a nation built on immigration and everyone who has worked hard to satisfy the requirements of immigrating to Canada is understandably very upset when they see the integrity of Canada’s Immigration system being compromised. Bogus asylum claimants, crooked immigration consultants, people smugglers, are examples of those abusing our citizenship program. Some of the 1,800 people targeted are believed to have used dishonest consultants who submitted fraudulent applications on behalf of people who already failed to meet the qualifications for citi-

Parliamentary Report zenship -- such as residency requirements. Canadian taxpayers are frustrated as well because many of these ‘bogus’ immigrants do not pay taxes in Canada. Once they receive their Canadian Citizenship, they continue to earn offshore many times the amount of money they would earn in Canada. As Citizens, they can periodically travel to Canada and use any of our programs and services while they pay no tax to Canada on their annual overseas earnings. They merely try to maintain a ‘paper presence’ in Canada

until they are really ready to live here sometime in the future. After a lengthy investigation, letters have been issued to these 1,800 Canadians telling them the federal government intends to revoke their citizenship. Individuals can challenge the decision in Federal Court but if they do not, Cabinet will move to void their passports and strip them of their citizenship. As well, those who have been involved in war crimes or crimes against humanity will find no haven on our shores. They will be located and they will face the consequences. We are publicizing the names and photos of specific individuals on the Canadian Border Services Agency’s Border Watch Line HYPERLINK "http://www. cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/wc-cg/menu-eng.

html" http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/ wc-cg/menu-eng.html. The Border Watch Line has tips pouring in with the help of the Canadian public. While no one should take action themselves if they identify any of the individuals listed on the website, information should be reported to the Canada Border Services Agency Border Watch Line at 1-888502-9060 or through the above website. With our government’s actions, Canada is sending a global message -- we will not allow fraudulent immigration to Canada. Our government received a strong mandate from Canadians to keep our streets and communities safe, and maintain the integrity of our immigration system, and we are following through on our commitment.

Alver Person William (Bill) Peter Gialet Sept. 25, 1924 - Jul. 26, 2011Feb. 21, 1934 - Jul. 27, 2011 Alver was the youngest of five children born to John and Amanda in the East Hay Lakes district (Lundemo). Alver was raised on the family farm and attended Brandland School. His most talked about activities during that time were baseball, pond hockey, Luther League, skiing, trapping weasels and rabbits. As a young man Alver joined the Canadian Army and served overseas during World War II. Upon returning home he was hospitalized for two years with Tuberculosis. His plans to farm were subsequently changed and instead he attended Camrose Lutheran College. It was there that he met his bride, Arlene Skaret. Alver’s long time profession as a Funeral Director created a life of service and passion for his community. Alver was an active member of Rotary Club, Canadian Bible Society, Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce, Messiah Lutheran Church, Bethany Board, Camrose Scout movement, and Camrose Ski Club. Along with woodworking, Alver’s favorite pastime was cross-country skiing and he competed in the Alberta Winter Games. Dad was very fond of his Swedish heritage and true to those customs, he was seldom seen drinking his coffee without a sugar lump. He also enjoyed eating pult, flatbread, lutefisk, lefse, and pickled herring. Alver and Arlene delighted in their many trips to Sweden visiting relatives and friends. In retirement they enjoyed many winters in Arizona, other travels, numerous picnics at the Person farm. Alver will always be remembered for his positive nature, compassion, humour, love for others, and faith in God. Alver is survived by his loving wife Arlene, daughter Kathy (Steve) Haugen and their children Hans, Luke, Anna, and son John (Carmen), several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Alver was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and one sister. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Norman Lentz officiating. Interment followed in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made to Augustana Chaplaincy Fund, Hastings Lake Lutheran Bible Camp, or a charity of choice. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, and grandfather Bill Gialet of Leduc on July 27, 2011 at the age of 77 years. He was born at Ferintosh, Alberta to parents Peter and Tatjana Gialet and was raised on a farm there. At the age of 16 in 1950, he joined the Imperial Bank of Canada in Ferintosh (later known as the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) and worked there until his transfer to Banff for two years, then to Edmonton for four years. On June 21, 1957 he married Ruby Winter of Bashaw, Alberta and several more transfers took them to Dawson Creek, BC, Calgary and back to Edmonton in 1971 where he served as manager of several branches. He left the bank in 1978 to pursue a career in real estate and served as manager for Block Bros. Realty for three years. In 1982 he joined Alberta Agricultural Development Corp. in Camrose (now AFSC) as assistant manager of Loan Administration and later as manager of account administration. He retired in 1998 after 16 years of service. He was a people person with a great sense of humor and his passion was dealing with the public. His plans for enjoying retirement and travelling were put on hold when in August, 2005 he was diagnosed with myelodysplasia (a blood condition) which required many blood transfusions. On July 30, 2007 he was diagnosed with menengioma (brain tumor); he had surgery November, 2007 and December, 2008, also radiation, to no avail. On Tuesday he suffered a seizure and passed away Wednesday morning July 27 at the Leduc Hospital. He leaves to mourn his wife Ruby of 54 years, sons Rob of Victoria, Rodney (Denise) of South Cooking Lake, and Joanne (Jim) Gallup of Leduc, 4 granddaughters Savanna and Sienna Gallup and Samantha and Nikki Gialet, brothers George of Rosehaven, Camrose and Fred of Bethany Care Center Camrose, nieces, nephews, many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and sister-in-law Velma Gialet. The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 5104 Ellerslie Rd. SW Edmonton (corner of 50 St. and Ellerslie Rd.) with Pastors Don Olson and Norm Lentz officiating. Internment will take place at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery east of Ponoka on Hwy 53. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery Fund or the charity of your choice. Condolences: www.serenity.ca

who passed away July 26, 2009 The Magic of Mom There is magic in a Mother’s touch And sunshine in her smile, The love she shared in all our lives Has made it all worthwhile. She shared her hope and courage When we looked into her eyes, Her laughter brought us endless joy And her work was warm and wise. The gentle touch of kindness We felt in her embrace We shall see the light from heaven When it shines upon her face. Asger, Annette, Bob, Brenda
