Bulbs, purchased in the memory of a loved one, will be offered Saturdays, December 14 and 21 at the Duggan Mall by caring volunteers. Tax receipts can be issued by the non-profit society for donations of $10 or greater. A similar long-standing project in Camrose several years ago illuminated a large tree in front of St. Mary’s Hospital. With the higher visibility location, Hospice Society members are crossing their fingers, hoping at least $3,000 will be realized in this year’s endeavour. Money raised will help provide home-like hospice settings which are used in conjunction with compassionate care of the dying. Funds will also assist in supporting loved ones at their time of greatest need. For more details see the article on page 4 of this edition of The Booster.

City goes over budget for snow removal By Dan Jensen

City council has authorized the use of funds from the general operating surplus to pay for snow removal costs from now until the end of the year. The City of Camrose has already spent its entire 2013 snow removal budget of $625,870. City general manager of infrastructure and planning Wayne Franklin told council Dec. 2 that even if the city receives normal snowfall for the remainder of the fiscal year, a snow removal budget over expenditure of $200,000 can be

expected at normal service levels. He also noted that if current weather trends continue, an over expenditure of in excess of $275,000 can be expected to achieve normal service levels. The City of Camrose initiates snow plowing operations as soon as is warranted at the direction of either the director of public works or his delegate. Main routes (48 Avenue, Highways 13, 26, 833 and 53 Street/Parkview Drive from 48 Avenue to Camrose Drive), Camrose Drive, City Center Camrose and the Camrose Airport receive

top priority, followed by arterial and collector roads leading to 48 Avenue and the city centre commercial areas, and finally, residential roads and lanes. Snow clearing starts in different residential areas on a rotating basis throughout the winter so no one area consistently receives a higher priority. The practice is predicated to a large extent by wind direction and drifting conditions. Franklin said he believes the City of Camrose is providing a level of service that it can justify. “We are keeping our streets passable and safe.

Our major thoroughfares, our arterials and collectors, receive a very high level of service. The practice, when feasible is to get down to bare pavement.” Mayor Norm Mayer said he looks at snow removal as one of the services the City of Camrose needs to continue to provide. “Everybody knows we have a snow problem and it is not just us. I think we have an obligation to the citizens to provide decent roads to travel on and that means removing snow.” Year to date the city has received 175.9 centimetres of snow. Historically,

the five-year average has been 129.2 centimetres of snow for the entire winter season. In the event there are not enough funds in the general operating surplus account to cover all snow removal costs from now to the end of the year, the City will take the funds from the accumulated surplus, or failing that, the stabilization account. Options that were not considered by council to be acceptable were the elimination of the hiring of private equipment, the elimination of overtime for public works staff, and not clearing residential streets.

Benefit for Justice raises just over $39,000 By Dan Jensen

Justice Wollman and her family have experienced a tremendous outpouring of community support over the last few months. “The things that people have done for us have been just fantastic,” said Justice’s mother, April. “I am so glad that we are living in this community. We wouldn’t have been able to receive this support anywhere else.” Justin, the father of Justice, said the support has come from not just friends and family but businesses as well. “I have never seen anything like it,” he said. An eight-year-old Grade 4 student at Sifton School, Justice has been undergoing treatment for a brain tumour at the Stollery Hospital in Edmonton since August of this year. In January, she and her entire family will be travelling to Jacksonville, Florida for special radiation therapy that is not yet available in Canada. “They are faced with many expenses at this time, including high travel and medication costs,” said family friend Kelly Reinprecht. “Right now they are travelling to the city (Edmonton) every 21 days for stays at

Justice Wollman (second from right), her parents, April and Justin, and her siblings, during the special Justice’s Benefit dinner and auction that was held at the Camrose Elks’ Hall Nov. 23.

the Stollery plus more procedures in between.” The Wollmans have been the beneficiaries of several donations and fundraisers, the most recent being the special Justice’s Benefit dinner and auction at the Camrose Elks Hall Nov. 23 that raised just over $39,000.

“We had about 100 silent auction items and about a dozen live auction items that were donated by friends and businesses throughout the community,” said benefit organizer Kelly Reinprecht. “It was amazing and it exceeded all our expectations.” The money that is raised

in the community will help the Wollmans stay together in their difficult times. “They won’t have to worry about where the money is going to come from or the fact that Justin will be off work for two months,” said Reinprecht. “They will be able to concentrate on what is really important. The

treatment plan is supposed to be about a year, but really it could be as long as two years.” Anyone who wishes to help the Wollmans with a donation is encouraged to call Justice’s aunt, Mallory Koch, by phone at 780-781-0224, or by email at mallory.85@ hotmail.com.

Hospice Society launches Lights to Remember campaign By Dan Jensen

The Hospice Society of Camrose and District is offering a unique way for you to remember that special loved one who has passed on. Hospice Society members will be at the Camrose Farmers’ Market this Saturday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 21, taking donations for sparkling bulbs it will be placing on a tree immediately east of the Bill Fowler Centre on 48 Avenue in the inaugural Lights to Remember campaign. “Each of the bulbs will represent a loved one,”

explained Hospice Society of Camrose and District Lights to Remember Campaign chair Pam Cummer. Those who make donations will be able to write the name of their loved one and/or a special message in a journal. They will also be able to write the name on a large canvass. Both the journal and the canvass will be displayed between the Farmers’ Markets in the St. Mary’s Hospital chapel. The Hospice Society has not set a specific price for the bulbs. “We are happy to accept

whatever donation people are willing to make,” said Cummer. “What we have said is that we will give out a tax receipt for any donation of $10 or more.” The Hospice Society has had good success since starting the campaign at the Farmers’ Market this past Saturday (Dec. 7). Canadian Tire in Camrose has graciously agreed to donate the Christmas lights, D2 Electric has agreed to place the lights on the tree using a bucket truck, and The Windwood Group has made a couple of eyecatching signs.

The Lights of Camrose campaign is hoping to raise at least $3,000 that will be put towards the development of hospice activities and the training of volunteers. “Our Society has trained palliative care volunteers to work in our community and hopefully soon they will be working in St. Mary’s Hospital, the Bethany sites, and maybe someday in individuals’ homes,” said Cummer. The Society’s longterm goal is to have a free-standing hospice building.

The Lights of Christmas campaign is slightly different from the Tree of Lights Campaign that was operated a few years ago by the now defunct Camrose and District Palliative Council. “We thought it was something we should resume and change up a bit with another tree in a different location and a different name,” said Cummer. An official tree lighting ceremony will be held towards the end of December. Lights will be displayed until Jan. 8 (after Ukrainian Christmas).

Snow Angels pack shovels By Murray Green

Snow Angels in Camrose carry shovels with them as they travel throughout the city. If you happen to catch one in action, you will notice they shovel snow a lot like hockey players swinging their sticks as they skate down the ice. That is because many of them are members of the Camrose Kodiaks hockey club. Over the past few years, on residential streets, people have seen someone shoveling their walks and driveways or they look out the window and wonder who shovelled the snow. “Some have come out and asked is this a paid service? The boys tell them, we are doing it because we want to help,” said Kodiaks coach and general manager, Boris Rybalka. The Kodiak players pop up around the City of Camrose when you least expect it and shovel your walk.

“They have been out this winter already trying to help out and shovel sidewalks and driveways,” added Boris. Peavey Mart is a huge community supporter and when manager Scott Schneider was approached about helping with some shovels he didn’t hesitate to come aboard. Players Dallas Bergstrom, Spencer Kryczka, Braeden Salverda, Luc Lemire, Brett Njaa, Matt Waseylenko and Nick Harder recently received shovels from Peavey Mart. “Peavey Mart is part of this great community and we are glad to be part of the Snow Angels Shovelling crew. It is great to see the Kodiaks out helping people when the snow hits,” said Scott. “We would like to thank Peavey Mart for donating the shovels that the boys use. They are true community supporters,” added Boris.

Battle River Credit Union has set a new record by allocating 30 per cent of its 2013 profits to common share accounts. “This is the most we have given back in our 63 year history,” said BRCU chief executive officer Steve Friend. “We are not aware of any other credit union in Canada with a payout this significant. Our average allocation over the past 10 years has been around 25 per cent.” The individual allocation totals varied according to how much business each member conducted with BRCU during the course of the year. A homeowner, for example, who paid $12,000 on a $300,000 mortgage (four per cent) would have received an allocation of $3,600. A farmer who paid 5.5 per cent interest ($37,675) on a farm machinery loan totalling $685,000 would have received a payback of $11,302. “We have some people who received rewards worth $50,000,” said Friend. The success BRCU experienced in 2013 can be attributed to wise decision making by the board of directors, strong management and the loyal support of members. “It all works together,” said Friend. “When members deal with us it allows us to make money, which, in the end can be given back to them. From the management perspective we have done a good job of controlling expenses and we are continually promoting our loans.” BRCU has been described by one of its members as the little giant. “We are still a small credit union and a small player compared to the big

banks but we can do things that the big banks cannot,” said Friend. “Because we are small we can move quickly and are able to offer more personalized service. It works for us and it is paying off big time.” BRCU offers a full slate of financial services, including loans, lines of credits and mortgages, GICs, RRSPs, on-line banking and farm financial services. Deposits are 100 per cent guaranteed by the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation. “People enjoy the wide range of services and have bought into our profit sharing concept,” said Friend. “They know that our profits are not going back to the shareholders in eastern Canada or whatever but to the local people right here.” BRCU has a different philosophy than many other credit unions in that it leaves the decisions on which causes to support up to the members. “Other credit unions pick the social conscience for their members and decide what they are going to support, whether it be the environment or something else,” said Friend. “The difference with us is that while we, too, have a social conscience and do many things with different charity groups, we try to put as much money back into the members’ pockets as we can and let them choose the organizations they want to support. We are not going to dictate that maybe the environment is more important when there are groups out there saying it is more important to feed the poor. We put as much back in their pockets as we can and let them make the decision.”

City council has approved the inclusion of a 48 Avenue bridge replacement project in the 2014 capital budget. “Inspections of the 48 Avenue bridge across Mirror Lake have indicated that the condition of the bridge is poor and that the structure needs to be replaced in the short term,” said a report presented to council by director of engineering Jeremy Enarson Dec. 2. “The consultant’s report from 2010 identified that the facility should be replaced within the next five years.” The City of Camrose expects that bridge construction will extend through the 2014 and 2015 construction seasons. “Winter construction is preferred in order to minimize the risk of environmental contamination due to working in the wetter summer season,” said Enarson. The Alberta Municipal Infrastructure program will pay $1.34 million of the project’s $2.8 million price tag. “Administration is proposing to use the full $1.34 million allocation of unspent AMIP funds on the 2014 component of this project,” said Enarson. “The remaining funds for the 2014 work is proposed to come from the 2014 municipal levy ($50,000) as well as accumulated basic capital grant funding. Financing for the 2015 component is not being requested at this time, although administration is planning to use a combination of municipal levy and basic capital grant funding for that work.” The bridge will be designed and constructed to accommodate capacity improvements in the City’s transportation master plan. “The project will address capacity and operational

issues along 48 Avenue between 53 Street and 50 Street by looking at the need/ benefit of adding a dedicated right turn lane at 50 Street for westbound to southbound turning traffic, as well as the possible reconfiguration of the intersection and/or removal of lights at 51 Street to reduce congestion near 50 Street,” said Enarson. Trunk sewer

Council also added to the capital budget the replacement and/or twinning of the existing sanitary trunk sewer pipe that runs through Jubilee Park, between 44 and 47 Avenue. “The condition of the existing sewer is fair (not poor, but not good),” said Enarson. “Additionally, the existing pipe is undersized for the current needs as evidenced by the number of recorded instances after rainfall events where the existing sewer line would surcharge to the surface, resulting in diluted sewage flowing across the grass in Jubilee Park and into Camrose Creek.” The project is expected to receive major funding from the Federal Gas Tax Fund. “As of the end of 2013, administration estimates that the City will have an accumulated balance of unspent FGTF of $1.42 million,” said Enarson. “As administration has learned that the FGTF program will continue for the next five plus years, the City is expected to receive approximately $921,000 in new FGTF funding for the next five years.” Administration is currently proposing to use $1.85 million for the project in 2014, which will incorporate all of the accumulated funding up to the end of 2013 as well as a portion of the 2014 allocation.

New playground Submitted

As part of the City of Camrose’s annual maintenance program, the play structure at Jubilee Park was identified for replacement due to its location and high usage. The original play structure had three slide elements that were becoming worn and unsafe and subsequently played a role in its replacement.

The total budget for the project was $130,000, with $95,000 allocated for the supply and installation of the playground equipment and the balance for materials (pea gravel, wood bordering, weeping tile and ground cloth), contract services (to remove the existing play structures, site preparation, spreading of pea gravel, and landscap-

ing), and the purchase of sod. The playground area was closed to public use after the September long weekend to begin the removal of the existing play structure and prepare the subsurface for the installation of the new playground.

The overall size of the existing area was extended an additional 30 feet to allow room for the new and improved playground. Installation began during the last week of September, and then the City staff returned to install the wooden border and ground

cloth. A local landscape contractor was hired to supply/place the pea gravel material and complete the landscaping. Finally, on Oct. 21, Parks staff placed new sod around the playground area to allow for the official opening on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Amazing Invention in Heating

Today’s economical alternative to ugly, inefficient space heaters

Models available with or without built-in thermostat

Warm a 10’ x 12’ (120 sq. ft.) room with only 400 watts. • Great for bedrooms, offices, kitchens, family rooms, etc • Efficient - Uses 73% less electricity than other room heaters • Economical - Save up to 50% or more on your total heating costs. • ECO-heaters are wall-mounted electric convection space heaters that use less than 1/3 of the energy typical space heaters use • An environmentally-responsible alternative to 1,500 watt space heaters • ECO-heaters are less than 24” square, and are mounted 3/4” off the wall to create a convection heat channel • The air between the wall and the panel is heated and rises, drawing cool air from the floor, thus silently circulating warm air throughout the room. ECO-heaters are easy to install. • Can be painted to match any décor, and plug into a standard outlet.

Students from across the region converged at Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School to join with teachers, administrators, parents, and Alberta Health Services (AHS) and other health professionals for a Healthy Active School Symposium Nov. 29. The event was designed to engage communities in building healthy, active schools and was hosted by Ever Active Schools (EAS), in partnership with AHS, the Be Fit For Life Centre, the Alberta Healthy School Community Wellness Fund and APPLE Schools. The healthy day engaged students and empowered leadership. Symposium participants joined in the activities, viewed presentations, shared ideas and networked with other school communities to set healthy goals, strategies and outcomes for the school year. Communities host such events throughout the province every fall. AHS has been a partner in the healthy events since 2005, working with hundreds of community and school partners to raise the profile of school health and build strong student leadership. Ever Active Schools assists Alberta schools in addressing and creating healthy, active school communities. Ever Active Schools receives core funding from Alberta Health, Education, and Tourism, Parks and Recreation.

See Amid the Winter Snow concert this Friday Submitted by the Central Alberta Homeschool Choir

Amid the winter snow, the laughter of young people can be heard. They rush inside to meet with their gifted choir director, Debbie Zepick, for another Friday morning rehearsal. The concert is approaching quickly and practices are brimming with the enthusiasm of youth. These singers are part of something very special. This is not just a Christmas concert. The young people in this choir are sharing their musical talent to help children in need. On Friday, December 13, at 7:30 p.m., over 200 young people from the Central Alberta Homeschool Choir and the Rosedale Valley Strings Orchestra together with songwriter Debbie Zepick will share an evening of joyous Christmas music with the people of Camrose. The See Amid the Winter Snow concert will be held at the Calvary Pentecostal Church (formerly the Extra Foods building) on 48th Street in downtown Camrose. Everyone is invited to come. Be inspired by beautiful music and be filled with Christmas hope There is no charge for the concert but a free will offering will be taken to support the Christian Life Orphanage in Mwanza, Tanzania, Africa. The concert will be a musical delight but the truly inspiring part of this story is the African children whose lives are being changed by the sound of hope. The relationship between the Central Alberta Homeschool Choir, the Rosedale Valley Strings, and the Christian Life Orphanage in Mwanza, Tanzania began in

The Central Alberta Homeschool Choir and Rosedale Valley Strings Orchestra will be performing at Calvary Pentecostal Church this Friday evening.

2009 when one of our former members, Daniel Zepick, met them in Tanzania. Patrick and Beatrice Mwafute welcomed orphans off the street into their home as a place of refuge, guidance and hope. Their situation was dire. See Amid the Winter’s Snow concerts that December raised enough money to support them for the year and continued to do so in 2010 as well. In April of 2011, four members of the group visited the orphanage and discovered that 34 boys were crowded into a regular three bedroom house with no area for play or study. Colden Palo was one of the choir members who travelled to Mwanza. “Meeting Patrick, Beatrice and the boys was incredible,” says Colden. “They were so friendly and joyful, despite the fact that

they do not have an easy life. I got to see and experience their story of hope and transformation. The first night we were there, the boys put on a play of their life story. The police would kick them if they found them in the streets. Nowhere was safe for them. They had a rough time until they met Patrick and Beatrice Mwafute, who basically rescued them.” The dream was born to not only provide monthly support, but to help the orphanage purchase land and to build a suitable facility. Land was purchased in 2012 and on November 30, 2013, the boys moved into their new home on six beautiful acres outside Mwanza. Donations from last year’s concerts series exceeded $30,000 for the project. Every dollar was used for essential supplies and to

build a simple dwelling for 60 children. This project is helping to change not only the lives of the children in Africa, but also the lives of people here. “I felt selfish when I came home to my first world excesses,” Colden explains. “It is embarrassing that we have so much extravagance when others who really deserve it have nothing. The people we met in Mwanza do such great things with so little. Beatrice and Patrick show such passion and courage in what they do. Getting to know the boys made me want to help them even more.” This enthusiasm is contagious. “The passion that these students have for music and for helping others across the world is so compelling,” says Debbie Zepick, their director. “They sing their hearts out

knowing now they can make a difference.” The goal this year is to supply the basic needs of the Christian Life Orphanage, enable the property to be fenced securely, and initiate sustainable food production. The hope is to facilitate sponsorship for each of the boys. Plans are underway for another trip to Tanzania. “We are so excited about going back and taking some of the older members of the choir along to meet the boys and share music and fun together,” says Debbie. See Amid the Winter’s Snow concerts will also be performed on Saturday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Red Deer, (New Life Christian Reformed Church: 20 Kelloway Crescent) and on Sunday, December 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the Stettler (Performing Arts Centre: 5411 50 Ave).

Council reduces speed limit on Camrose Drive By Dan Jensen

Camrose City passed an amendment to the City of Camrose Traffic Bylaw Dec. 2 that will reduce the speed on Camrose Drive at 50 Street from 80 to 60 km per hour. Councillor Wayne Throndson expressed the belief that a speed limit of 80 km at the Camrose Drive/50 Street intersection is just too fast. “If vehicles are coming from the east and west at 80 km, somebody is going to get tattooed,” said Throndson. “It is bad enough at 60 km per hour.” Councillor Kevin Hycha said he is in favour of lowering the speed limit if it ends up saving a life. “I am not an expert and I am not here to say that I am, I just don’t want to overlook common sense with maybe a little too much analytical information.” City general manager of

infrastructure and planning Wayne Franklin shared the opinion that the reduction in the speed limit is not necessary, or appropriate. “The history of accidents at this location is fairly low and wouldn’t justify the reduction in speed,” said Franklin. “Administration can’t guarantee that maintaining the existing higher speed limit on Camrose Drive will result in no collisions, however information from organizations such as the Transportation Association of Canada indicates that the likelihood of traffic collisions is actually reduced when a roadway’s speed limit is appropriately posted.” Franklin illustrated his point by sharing an example. “If you are sitting at the stop sign at 50 Street and you want to turn onto Camrose Drive, if it (speed

limit) is posted at 60 km per hour, you reasonably expect that the vehicle you see coming is going at 60 km hour. But if the design speed does not justify that, a high percentage of traffic will be travelling faster than that and you base your decision on an incorrect assumption. That is just one of the mechanisms why we don’t recommend reducing the speed artificially.” With the exception of the intersection of 68 Street, Camrose Drive was designed to safely accommodate vehicles travelling between 90 and 100 km per hour. A study completed by Al Terra Engineering in 2005 indicated that the 85 per cent of drivers on Camrose Drive were travelling at 86 km per hour between Parkview Drive and 68 Street, and 94 km per hour between Camrose Creek and 50 Street. Anoth-

er study, conducted by the City of Camrose in 2013, showed that the typical travel speed of motorists are aligned with the current speed limit of 80 km per hour. Based on the current measured daily traffic volumes and the average total collision rates for the last 20 years, the collision rate for the 50 Street Camrose Drive intersection is calculated to be 1.48 collisions per million vehicles. Franklin said that reductions in the speed limit would reduce the benefits of Camrose Drive as a bypass route. “This in turn will lead to additional truck and nonlocal traffic being routed through the City along 48 Avenue, rather than along Camrose Drive. “There is limited ability for the City to economically increase capacity along 48 Avenue.

Any restrictions to the flow of traffic along Camrose Drive must be considered in relation to the desire to direct truck and through traffic away from 48 Avenue.” Councillors Ages Hoveland and Bill Sears agreed that the speed limit should not be changed. “When this first came up I wanted to consider the reduction, but now I have to oppose the motion and follow the recommendation of the experts,” said Hoveland. Councillor Sears said it is important that council listen to what administration is saying. “I have to speak against it (the amendment).” Administration recommended that some public advertising of the bylaw occur in order to provide adequate notice of the change to the travelling public.

Medical students enjoy visit to St. Mary’s Hospital By Murray Green

Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan and the Camrose and Area Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee hosted a Skills Day for first and second year medical students who are attending the University of Alberta Nov. 30. The students (16 nursing, seven physio and 37 medical) worked at the STARS mobile simulation unit, heart and stroke rehab, suturing, insertions/catheterization and obstetric stations prior to taking a tour of Camrose and enjoying an evening of dancing and a home-cooked meal in Round Hill. The skills stations were run simultaneously, so students could rotate through every 30 minutes. The skills day, which began in 2004, is seen by both the participants and the communities that co-host them as an opportunity for students to practice realworld medical scenarios. By having the chance to meet and interact with community members, these medical students – many of whom are from urban areas – experience first-hand the benefits of living and working in a rural community. Camrose jumped at the opportunity to host the event. “Since this is my hometown, it was my job to con-

vince everyone to come here and learn about the city and learn clinic skills as well. It is great interaction for the students and they can see what it is like in a rural setting. Several students already said to me that they were surprised that Camrose was so big and that the hospital is so big (76 beds),” said Jolene Johnston, a second year medical student at the University of Alberta. Jolene grew up in Camrose and enrolled at Augustana in her first year before transferring. “St. Mary’s is a large enough hospital that they offer a wide variety of surgeries and opportunities that can be lost in the big cities,” she said. The students learned hands-on medical skills. “A lot of these students have grown up in downtown, big cities and have never ever been inside a rural facility before. And they have no idea what kind of medicine, nursing or rehabilitation they can practice here,” explained Rosemary Burness, medical student initiatives coordinator, Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan. “Some students started three months ago and have been learning out of books. This is a great opportunity to learn skills with the support of members of the hospital staff in Camrose.

Camrose physician Dr. Donna Morrow demonstrates how to clear airways to medical, nursing and physio students Colin Siu and Sheila Wang at one of the five learning stations.

Most of them wouldn’t consider a rural community if they didn’t receive this chance to participate in the skills day.” Both the students and administrators were impressed with Camrose.

“I’ve been to a lot of these and Camrose has put on the best day and spread for these students that I have seen,” said Rosemary. “I don’t know if I’ve seen this much staff participation before. It is quite amazing. Medical students have this fear of working alone in a rural community. Camrose has shown how everyone helps each other and there is always support around them. Those fears have disappeared today.” The Skills Day is a way of recruiting health care workers to rural communities. “We have a hard time

attracting enough doctors so patients frequent the emergency room rather than having a family doctor who’s looking after all of their needs,” said Cherylyn Antymniuk, executive director of Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose. Cherylyn has practiced in both rural and urban areas and says she far prefers rural health care. “There isn’t that hierarchy. It’s more whenever anything needs to get done, everybody rolls up their sleeves and you get it done,” she explained. Continued on page 26

Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital executive director Cherylyn Antymniuk and Dr. Wouter Hugo explain the process of examining an expecting mother when she starts to go into labour. About 60 students were in Camrose to learn, tour the city and relax in Round Hill.

Occupational therapist student Natalie Wills experiences how patients learn to walk after an injury, while student Irum Rizwan, St. Mary’s Hospital rehab manager Dana Norton and student Ryan Schaub observe during the skills day in Camrose.

University medical student Safia Marani receives some advice on suturing from Dr. Amber Jorgenson. The students practiced on pigs legs at the hospital.

Grannies express gratitude Since their beginnings in January 2010, the Camrose Grateful Grannies have sent $72,950 to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

The Grateful Grannies are a group of grandmother and “grand-others” from Camrose and area who are committed to supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. This Canadian organization raises funds to assist the Africa grandmothers as they care for a generation of orphaned grandchildren and others affected by

HIV/AIDS. The Grateful Grannies currently consists of over 90 members. New members are always welcome. During the 2012-2013 year, the Camrose Group raised almost $20,000 in events and donations. The beautiful AIDS Angels and cards made by a dedicated group of crafty volunteers raised $2,200 this year alone! The Grannies big-

gest fundraising event is the National Walk, “Stride to Turn the Tide”, occurring each June. On February 14 you find Grannies and University of Alberta students selling delicious cookies in the Forum at Augustana Faculty. The always fun and interesting Christmas Market at the historic Bailey Theatre in downtown Camrose

occurred on Sunday, December 1. Individuals and small groups have taken on the challenge of personal fundraisers. This year’s very successful events included jewellery sales, a prairie foods dinner party, stargazing, a fabric sale, and a garden party. In addition to fundraising and communicating about the work of the

Olson. She commented, “It is quite daunting to think of filling Agnes’ shoes as she has provided such tremendous leadership since the inception of the Grateful Grannies. I am delighted that she will continue to serve on the steering committee and know that she is very committed to the organization. I,

too, have been part of the Grateful Grannies since the beginning and the more that I learn about the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the more impressed I am. I am also inspired by the creativity and hard work of our local members and am amazed at the amount of money that we have been able to send to the SLF

in just over three years. Mostly, I am motivated by our African sisters who are holding their communities together as they step up to raise the millions of children who have been orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. It is a privilege to be working in solidarity with them and with the grandmothers

and grand-others from across Canada.” The Grateful Grannies are able to give presentations to organizations interested in learning more about the campaign and how you can get involved. For more information about the Grateful Grannies, contact Mardell Olson at 780 672 8057.

Schaffter appointed

TD Canada Trust

Jacqueline Schaffter, Q.C., has been appointed to Alberta’s Edmonton Region Provincial Court. Schaffter was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1980 after obtaining her Law degree at the University of Alberta in 1979. She worked in Camrose until 2001, focusing on the areas of family law, personal injury and wills and estates. She then began working with the Family Law Office in Edmonton, a program of Legal Aid Alberta that provides comprehensive family law services to individuals

Schaffter continued to work for this program until 2007, when she became the president and CEO of Legal Aid Alberta. “Ms. Schaffter’s work with Legal Aid Alberta shows she is dedicated to ensuring all Albertans have access to the justice services they need,” said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “I am delighted to appoint someone to the bench who is so committed to helping Albertans.”

Bailey needs board members By Dan Jensen

The Bailey Theatre Society will be looking to add more board members at its annual general meeting in January. “We need as many people as we can get to supply manpower and input on our future direction,” said Bailey Theatre Society corporate treasurer Bill Walker. Bailey Theatre Society president Judy McLean said the board needs people who are interested and committed to making the Bailey as vibrant as it can be. “We need people who have creative ideas for fundraising or who are interested in policy making, or finances.” Walker knows from his previous involvement with organizations in Montreal, Edmonton, Ottawa, Edmonton and Bonnyville that it is tough sometimes to get people to come forward to serve on a board and actively help with what needs to be done. “We need people who will do more than listen, we need people who will be

proactive when it comes to running the organization,” said Walker, adding that the ideal board member is someone who has passion and commitment. “We would love to get someone who is passionate about the arts, passionate about running a historic theatre. It can be a difficult environment sometimes because a almost all performing arts theatres in Alberta need outside support. They just simply cannot be self supporting because they don’t generate enough cash. We need people who can tolerate that environment and keep a positive approach.” McLean said the only way the Bailey Theatre Society can survive is by having a creative and optimistic approach. “That is what the arts is all about. We as a board work as a big family. We have good fun and good laughs and it is a good atmosphere to be in.” Bailey Theatre conducted interviews last week with a person it is hoping

will accept the position of manager and help steer a straight course for the theatre in the coming months. “It would be wonderful to have someone who has been in the theatre business for a long time,” said McLean, adding that the Bailey has been without a manager since September. “The person we are looking at would create a season of entertainment and events. The way it is now we have been taking things as they come along because we have not had the management to give us budgets and plans for longevity. We have some exciting new events coming up in the new year, including the Nordlys Film Festival in April, but we need to add a lot more depth to the whole season.” Anyone who is interested in obtaining more information about serving on the board is encouraged to contact McLean or Walker, or call the Bailey Theatre box office at 780-672-5510.

STARS paramedic instructor David Allison describes emergency procedures to University of Alberta students Julie Rudkowski and Lara Sreibers in the STARS mobile unit that was temporarily beside Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose. Continued from page 18 set up a practice, they defi-

“Everyone here looks after each other. If a machine goes down, we have a plan in place, so patient care is not interrupted. When I came here, I thought ‘what a gem.’ I couldn’t believe the number of programs and services that are offered here. St. Mary’s Hospital is the best place to work in Western Canada. We all have a common goal of helping patients the best we can with the resources we have. We just need to get that message across to medical students.” The federal government is trying to encourage health care professionals to practice in rural areas by forgiving student loans for family doctors and nurses who work in rural or remote communities. The program started in April and more than 1,100 people have already taken advantage of it. “I think the main benefit is the continuity of care,” Jolene said. “In a rural centre you’re doing more of everything and that is attractive to several students. A lot of students are looking at Camrose in different ways. Even if they don’t choose Camrose to

nitely have the city on the radar for practicums and shadowing.” Primary Care Network executive director Stacey Strilchuk indicated that the day was very important to introduce the students to the community. “It is a good networking tool for the recruitment of future medical doctors and nurses. The medical community will talk about their experiences in Camrose and we want to make sure they go away with positive things to say about our community. We want them back after they graduate,” said Stacey. “It gives Camrose an opportunity to pat itself on the back. It shows we have acute care, primary care and medical clinics to celebrate. The real key to this day is showing the human touch we have. The students build relationships with our staff and now we are not just a web page, but real people who are ready to help them. It takes a lot of hard work to organize a day like this, but it happens because of the partnerships we have. There are nothing but positives coming out of this day.”

Bullying. That’s not the Alberta way.

Premier Alison Redford

Stop Bill 46 In 1977, Premier Peter Lougheed promised that in all future contract negotiations, provincial employees would have the right to binding arbitration in lieu of the right to strike. Now, Premier Alison Redford has rammed through Bill 46, which goes back on that promise and takes the right to arbitration away from 22,000 front-line government employees. Redford’s Bill 46 gives government the power to freeze wages, with no independent arbitrator determining what is fair and justified. That’s not negotiating, that’s bullying. And bullying is not the Alberta way. The Alberta way has always been to keep your promises and respect the rights of others.

Sometimes you just don’t take no for an answer

By Adele Miller “There’s no way I’m going square dancing” said my husband. We had just been posted to Germany for a four-year stint and one of the community activities listed in the welcome package was square dancing. I really wanted to learn. I loved to dance, however my husband had always been uncomfortable on the dance floor. Our first week in Germany I met another mother at the park. Our children were the same age so we hit it off right away. She had just been posted as well, and we got to talking about the activities the families would be taking part in. She and her husband were joining the square dance club the following evening and said that beginner lessons were starting then. I decided then and there that my husband was going to do something he didn’t want to do. Thirty years later we’re still dancing. Square dancing was then, and still is, the best thing for our marriage. It is the one activity we do together, and no matter what life throws our way, we can guarantee some good laughs and wonderful fun on the dance floor. It has given us the common goal and challenge to work together and care about each other, both on the dance floor and in the many other areas of our lives. Our marriage has always been happiest when we are part of the square dancing community. We danced in many European countries while in Germany for the four years, and when we returned to Canada we continued, and have danced in three provinces. Every club we join or visit has greeted us with wonderful welcomes and good times. Like many of the other clubs we have known in the past, the Rose City Square Dance Club has provided us a new square dance home and we’re grateful for the welcome and friendship they so openly give. So my suggestion to you out there looking for something to do together and that comes with a guarantee of a fun time, step out of your comfort zone a bit and give us a try. We would love to share he fun and friendship that is world-known by all square dancers. And if it takes a bit of ear pulling, so be it.

Dianne Katherine Sieben Dianne Katherine Sieben of Camrose passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013 at the age of 67 years. Dianne Katherine Keller was born to Adam and Emily Keller on January 18, 1946 in Provost, AB. She was a vibrant young girl, raised in the Compeer area, along with her 11 siblings. She quickly became a young woman and found the man of her dreams, Joseph Lawrence Sieben of Provost, whom she married on July 28, 1965. They started their family almost immediately, giving life to two wonderful baby boys; Grant on October 21, 1966 and Todd on August 14, 1970. Although Dianne and Joe loved their lives in Provost, they spent the last 18 years of happiness in Camrose. Dianne was an energetic person, full of passion for life. A woman with many talents, she thrived at whatever challenge she faced. She was a selfless person who gave openly and graciously whenever there was someone hurting or in need. She was the loudest cheerleader during all the sporting events she so willingly attended, and missed very few road trips to the various sporting venues. She was her grandchildren’s biggest advocate. Dianne left this world so suddenly. She leaves to cherish her memory, Joe, her husband of 48 years; her son Grant and his three children Michael, Emily and Hannah; her son Todd and daughter-inlaw Tammy and their two children Kyle and Chad; her sisters Julie, Loyola and Lee; and her brothers Ed, Wilf, Myrell, Lorne, Ron, Pat and Manny. She will be welcomed in Heaven by her parents Emily and Adam; and her youngest sister Mary. Dianne will always be loved and will be missed by so many. Family and friends were her greatest passion, and she was very fortunate to have so many. A prayer vigil was held on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Mass of the Resurrection was held on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church (5010-48A Ave, Camrose) with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. Inurnment followed in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Kidsport Camrose (kidsportcamrose@cable-lynx.net) or the charity of one’s choice. Salomon “Sal” Joseph Sieben January 10, 1944 – December 3, 2013 Salomon “Sal” Sieben of Camrose passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the age of 69 years. My dad was born on January 10, 1944 in Cosine, SK to John and Mary. He was raised in Provost with his eight siblings. In 1965, he married my mom Clara from Bodo. Together, they moved from Provost to Killam where my dad had a barber shop and cut meat in the Strome Co-op. Then they moved to Edmonton where Dad cut meat for Canada Safeway. In 1975, I was born and four years later Dad was transferred to Camrose as meat manager for Safeway until 1992. In that same year, Dad moved from Safeway to United Food and Commercial Workers as a union rep commuting to Edmonton for 10 years. My dad enjoyed life a lot. He loved all sports – mostly a good game of hockey – an old ’80s Oilers game. I remember MANY Saturday nights, my mom ready to go dancing and Dad creeping slower and slower to the door to go so he could catch every possible minute of the game, hoping Mom would change her mind to leave later. Dad also did Kodiaks security with his brother Joe until he moved into Bethany Care. Dad enjoyed a good crib or buck card game, local dances and many polka fests over the years. One of his favorite summer holidays was going with good friends to Kimberley, BC for the Accordionfest. Dad was known for his dancing. My dad will always be remembered as a man who loved to have fun and have a good laugh. There wasn’t a time when he didn’t have a joke to share. Dad also had a real love of music. I remember many nights sitting in the basement, just my dad and I, singing The Gambler and Wasn’t that a Party? together while he played his guitar. Dad was also extremely handy and was able to fix nearly anything. I still remember my Grandma Ries always depending on my dad to fix things for her. Grandma would have her little list and would say, “I knew Sal could fix it.” Spending countless hours beside my dad growing up, I learned a lot of these traits. I learnt, most importantly, to never give up. This is something I will ALWAYS treasure as a gift from my dad. My dad was such a family man. The relationship Mom and Dad shared and our family life was a blessing. One of Dad’s greatest loves was his granddaughter Trysta. He had many plans to spoil his little girl, which he did, until his disease made it more difficult. Many special memories were made during the many visits Trysta had with her Papa. She cared for him right up to the end, even on his last day, making sure he was comfortable. Dad was an amazing husband, dad, papa, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends. Until I see you again, I know you are in Heaven with Kelly looking down on your girls. You earned eternal rest. I love you, Dad. Sal leaves to mourn his wife Clara; daughter Sheena; granddaughter Trysta; brothers Joe, John (Linda) Sieben, Dan (Donna) Sieben; sisters Dorothy (Wilf) Keller, Marie (Peter) Stang and Loretta (Fred) Weinkauf; brothers-in-law Grant Bowick and Larry (Robbie) Ries; sister-in-law Frieda Morrow; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary; his son-in-law Kelly Anderson; sisters Cathy Bowick and Josephine (Warren) Rufor; in-laws Alois and Annie Ries; and brother-in-law Ron Morrow. A Prayer Vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, 2013 from Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2013 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. Sal will be laid to rest beside his son-in-law Kelly Anderson in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Sherwood Park. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Louise Jensen Care Centre, Alzheimer Society or to the charity of one’s choice. To send condolences please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Gladys Merle (nee Wig) Rude Gladys Merle Wig, the youngest of four, was born on October 25, 1929 in Shaunavon, SK to Helma and Edward Wig. She attended Brownville School near her farm home and graduated from LCBI, Outlook, SK in 1948. After training in Moose Jaw, she worked as a nurse in Eastend, Frontier and LCBI. Gladys was baptized, confirmed and married at White Valley Lutheran Church near Eastend, SK. She married Milton Rude, a Lutheran pastor on August 19, 1954. Gladys and Milton lived in Grande Prairie, Calgary, Vernon, Medicine Hat and Ryley. In 1993, they retired in Camrose. Gladys lived her last couple of years in Deer Meadows and Louise Jensen care homes with Milton. She died peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Louise Jensen Care Centre, surrounded in her last days by all of her family. Gladys was active in parish activities, ELW, choir, handbells, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, musicals, Bible studies, Mission Group and quilting. She never returned to nursing, but ran a much-sought-after daycare in her homes. Vacations included church and family camping, and visiting relatives, usually on their farms. They visited Brian in El Salvador, their homeland of Norway, eastern Canada and the Holy Land, and took in many church and mission conventions and ELW conferences. She also enjoyed a lifelong connection with her nursing classmates. In her early days, she took part in ball games and track events. Later, she enjoyed skating, cross-country skiing, biking and much walking. Interests included photography, sewing, canvassing by foot and by phone, her computer, researching family history and learning Norwegian at Augustana University College. Her grandchildren were deeply loved, and she took great interest in all their activities, babysitting often. Guests were always welcome in her home for coffee or for overnight stays. Her home was a hub of activity, and a center of love. We were blessed to have her in our lives. We love her and shall truly miss her. Most important to Gladys was her deep faith in God which was evident in how she lived her life with a response of love, service and example to everyone with whom she came in contact. Life became more difficult in her last years, but family and friends were welcome around her and she loved us well to the end. Our dad was an amazing example of love and devotion, holding her hand for hours each day. Now we leave Gladys in God’s hands, knowing she is safely “Home”. Gladys is predeceased by her mother Helma; father Edward; brothers Orville and Don (Janet); sister Eleanor (Bob Hunter); brother-in-law Desmond Lien; and sisters-in-law Viola Lien and Helga Rude. She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Milton; children Marlys (Len Sorenson) of Camrose, Brian of El Salvador, Gail (Phil Berg) of Eckville, and Laverne (Lisa) of Calgary; grandchildren Amy (Jeremiah Overland), Jesse, Kara (fiancé Nathan Pederson) Sorenson, Joel, Kirsten, Emma and Tova Berg, and Hannah, Mikaela and Natalie Rude; and her soon-to-beborn first great-grandchild; four siblings-in-law Shirley Wig, Stanley Rude and Alvin and Alice Rude; and numerous nieces and nephews. We extend thanks to the dedicated staff at St. Mary’s Hospital who took care of her on numerous occasions, and to those at Louise Jensen who lovingly cared for her in her last years and days. Sincere thanks to all who participated in the service celebrating her life, brought food to our home, assisted our family in numerous ways, and uplifted Mom and us in prayer. It has all meant so much, and we thank God for you. A service of celebration for her life was held on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor David Eriksson, Bishop Larry Kochendorfer and Bev Swanson officiating. Interment took place at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorials can be made to Messiah Lutheran Church (In Mission With El Salvador), Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute, Outlook, SK, or Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute, Camrose, AB.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $1,609 to Ecole Sifton School Playground Replacement Project. The grant is from income from the Paul and Millicent Bethge Fund, which was established to support parks and park facilities in Camrose. The grant was for picnic tables and benches on the school grounds. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects such as this in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Some grant funding is also made available by generous donors who make annual gifts to the Battle River Community Foundation. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted nearly $2,000,000 to support important local initiatives and organizations.

2014 Ford Fusion Groundbreaking design, jaw breaking fuel economy

Dan Madison By Dan Jensen

The 2014 Ford Fusion at Lamb Ford Sales offers everything you could want in a midsize car and more. “It has a groundbreaking design, jaw-dropping fuel economy and technologies that will result in better and safer drivers,” said Lamb Ford Sales sales manager Brett Read. Fusion is available in S, SE, Hybrid S, Hybrid SE, Titanium, Hybrid Titanium, Energi SE and Energi Titanium models. The available Active Grille Shutters21 are designed to help reduce air resistance and increase fuel efficiency. When closed, they help to reduce the aerodynamic drag on the vehicle caused by air traveling through the engine compartment. Aerodynamic design

If you were to view a vehicle in a wind tunnel, you would see air getting trapped beneath it, creating drag. To help reduce this drag in the Fusion the underbody is shielded to minimize drag. Performance

There are three EcoBoost® turbocharged, directinjection powerplants from which to choose. With robust low-end torque and virtually no turbo lag, EcoBoost® technology squeezes maximum power from each drop

of fuel. Along with impressive efficiency. The available 2.0 litre EcoBoost® engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission featuring paddle shifters and 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque The available1.6 litre EcoBoost® engine is mated to 6-speed manual transmission with 182 horsepower. • The Available 1.5L EcoBoost engine mated to a 6-speed SelectShift® Automatic transmission that achieves up to 5.3L/100km hwy (53 mpg). The Fusion Hybrid maximizes performance. Powered by a state–of-art lithium-ion battery, it can travel gas-free in all-electric mode at speeds of up to 100 km/h. When more power is required, the gas engine can kick in to power the battery or enhance performance. As if that’s not enough, the regenerative braking system captures over 90 per cent of the brake energy, and uses it to help recharge the batter and maximize your distance. The transition is seamless. The Fusion Hybrid also features visual aids to help you drive more efficiently. The SmartGauge® cluster with EcoGuide uses dual LCD screens on either side of the centre-mounted speedometer. Watch the display grow leaves as your short-term

driving efficiency increases. As your long-term driving becomes more efficient, vines and more leaves are displayed. Included with the Fusion Hybrid is the energy flow monitor. It lets you track the powertrain’s operation — hybrid drive, electric drive, gas engine plus instant and average fuel economy. The Fusion Energi is designed to be efficient, thanks to combining a Lithium-Ion battery and electric motor with a gasoline engine. The Lithium-Ion battery provides enough power to operate in all-electric mode for short commutes. Thanks to plug-in capability, you can charge the battery using a 120-volt outlet. Or you can use an available 240-volt outlet, upgraded with electric vehicle supply equipment. To lessen any concern you may have about driving range, when the battery is depleted or more power is required, the vehicle functions as a traditional gas-electric hybrid. The Fusion Energi also features a Regenerative Braking System, allowing it to capture over 90 per cent of the brake energy and store it for later use. The innovative SmartGauge® EcoGuide gauge cluster in the Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi Plug-In Hybrid provides real-time

information to help you optimize efficiency. SmartGauge® uses dual LCD screens on either side of the centre-mounted speedometer. Watch the display grow leaves as your short-term driving efficiency increases. As your long-term driving becomes more efficient, vines and more leaves are displayed. A tutorial built into the display lets you choose one of four data screens for the level of information you want – Inform, Enlighten, Engage or Empower – and explains your options within each. Steering wheelmounted controls make it all easy. All levels can indicate instant fuel economy, fuel economy history, odometer, engine coolant temperature, plus trip data including fuel economy and kilometres to empty. Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) automatically adjusts to deliver precise feel and control at higher speeds, and the right level of assistance at slower speeds. EPAS features Pull-Drift Compensation control and active nibble control. Pull-Drift Compensation detects road conditions – such as a crowned road surface or crosswinds – and adjusts the EPAS to compensate. The active nibble control feature uses the EPAS motor to reduce

unwanted vibrations in the steering wheel. The result is a comfortable driving experience with responsive steering. Available Intelligent AWD uses sensors to constantly monitor traction. It balances torque between the front and rear wheels to enhance handling and maximize traction, when wheel slip is detected. Intelligent AWD maximizes your traction in all road conditions. Interior

The Fusion was designed to deliver on every drive. Soft-touch surfaces greet you at every point of indulgence, including the available the leatherwrapped steering wheel, shift knob and leathertrimmed seats. The SE and SE Hybrid feature a cloth, 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar and a manual passenger seat. The SE Luxury/SE Luxury Hybrid feature a leathertrimmed, heated, 10-way power driver’s seat with three memory settings, power lumbar and twoway power passenger seat with power recline. You can see the 2014 Ford Fusion at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

The Augustana Vikings earned a split against the Red Deer Kings in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference hockey action Nov. 29 and 30. Red Deer pulled out a 2-1 victory in overtime in the first meeting. Matt Foster netted the lone marker for the Vikings with help from Craig Cornelsen. Goalie Joel Danyluk made numerous good saves to hold Augustana in the contest. He stopped 30 of 32 shots. The Vikings recorded 34 shots on the Red Deer net. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Enjoy a country Christmas concert at Bailey Theatre By Murray Green

Talented local artists will be sharing their music with a holiday concert called A Down Home Country Christmas at the Bailey Theatre on Wednesday, Dec. 11 starting at 7 p.m. Canadian Country Music Association award winner Lisa Hewitt, Camerata, local singer Myra Marshall, and two-time North American fiddle champion Tyler Vollrath will perform with Bev Munro handling the emcee duties. “This is a special one night only concert that will be a rare musical treat for everyone,” said Tyler. “To have multiple award winners on the same stage for a Christmas concert will be a highlight for both the musicians and fans.” The concert is an exciting venture for Tyler. “It is my hope that this will become an annual event and that area residents will look forward to it through the year. Each year, I’d like to expand, making the show bigger and better. I would like the community to get behind us to make this show a success.” A Down Home Country Christmas will be an incred-

ible evening showcasing some of Canada’s top award winning musical talent from yesterday and today, as well as a local rising star in a one-nightonly performance that will musically prepare your heart to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Tyler is a Bawlf resident who will feature a Christmas concert that will have the same Opry setting, with a yuletide flare. “I want to focus on creating a down home old fashioned, classic country Christmas atmosphere, along with some intimate performances by featured guests that will leave audiences reminded that the warmth and joy of Christmas brings us closer to each other,” explained Tyler. “I’m setting a goal to raise monetary funds, so that we can purchase gifts for the Christmas hampers that are distributed by our local food banks, and present a cheque to the local youth shelter, The Open Door..” The Bailey Theatre doors will open at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. concert on Dec. 11. Tickets are available at the Bailey Theatre Box Office.
