From the late 1890s to about 1905, vast numbers of Norwegian settlers were coming north to make their living off of the rich farmland of east central Alberta. The Alberta Norwegian Lutheran College Association founded Camrose Lutheran College, which opened in the fall of 1911. The goal – to provide youth with a liberal education in the arts and sciences while preserving Norwegian language and culture, and strengthening Christian belief. This weekend, the
Centenary celebration of U of A Augustana Campus
will take place.
The evolution of CLC to an undergraduate liberal arts and sciences college began under the capable direction of Chester Ronning back in the 1930s. However, with war and other obstacles impeding this pursuit, first year university courses were not offered until 1959! Second year courses followed ten years later and full degree-granting status was attained in 1984, under the college’s visionary presidency of K. Glen Johnson. Today, Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, under the exemplary guidance of the institution’s dean Dr. Roger Epp, now draws broadly on its “pioneer legacy” in enriching students’ lives and their learning. This weekend special events, parties and seminars will recognize its impressive 100 years of history in Camrose, Alberta.

City council agrees to recycling deal with Camrose County By Dan Jensen
Goodbye old friend Photo by Christopher Thrall Augustana's North Hall, formerly the West Hall dormitory, was torn down May 25, after nearly 60 years of service.
City council gave its approval last week (May 24) to an additional one-year pilot project agreement between the City of Camrose and Camrose County for the processing of recyclable materials at the Recycle with Centra Cam depot. The County has agreed to pay $44,000, or approximately 9.6 per cent of the total program costs. Councillor Gerry Galenza said he was pleased to see the County's willingness to share some of the costs. "At least they are able to pay something. "It shows that they are willing to partner with us." Camrose County contributed $44,000 towards the cost of the recycling depot in 2010. "That was found money for us in 2010," said Mark Barrett, director of infrastructure and engineering services. "The cost of running the facility was no different than what we had budgeted because before that they were using the facility at no cost at all." The County initially proposed a system of contribution to operational costs associated with the processing of recyclables on a per tonne basis. The County's wish this year is to determine if the recycling collection program is good value to County ratepayers and further, if a yearly lump sum payment may be more advantageous than a participation-based contribution. Councillor Brandon Blatz expressed concern that the recycling services cost-sharing agreement between the City and County has City taxpayers paying significantly more per capita for recycling than the residents of Camrose County. "Under this agreement," said Blatz in a written statement, "the City of Camrose agrees to 'provide service to the County on the same basis as the services provided to the residents of Camrose.' The service being provided is essentially to be equal, yet the financial impact to our respective residents is not."

Transportation department members Brenda Johnson and Yvette Doutre coordinated the collection, loading and delivery of donations on behalf of the school division. Submitted
Staff and families of Battle River School Division made contributions to a recent “stuff the bus” campaign, to deliver essential items to those from Slave Lake who have been relocated to emergency shelters and make-shift accommodation. Even though folks had only 48 hours notice of the plan, and the School Division adhered to the emergency shelter coordinator’s very specific list of items they would accept, they were still able to deliver a full load of items. In the end, members of the transportation department decided it was more practical to stuff a utility trailer than a bus, but none the less it was definitely stuffed with much-needed items such as blankets, pillows, bedding, toiletries and clothing. The School Division expressed appreciation for the contributions. “It’s truly inspiring how people and communities come together in times of need,” says superintendent of schools Dr. Larry Payne. “We sent out one e-mail inviting people to collect as many items as they could in about two days. We wanted to get those items to the people who needed them as quickly as possible.” “Special thanks to director of transportation Brenda Johnson and Yvette Doutre in the transportation department for their efforts in coordinating this project, as well as for loading and delivering the items.”
Funds approved for new Bawlf school By Dan Jensen
The community of Bawlf will be getting a new school. Education Minister Dave Hancock and Infrastructure Minister Ray Danyluk announced in Red Deer last Thursday provincial funding for the construction of a new school in Bawlf and 21 other communities across the province. The government will also be funding the modernization of 13 existing schools. Bawlf School principal Diane White said the announcement was reason for a community-wide celebration. "We have been waiting for this for a long time but the announcement itself definitely was a surprise for us." Bawlf School Council chair Karen Naslund said the new school is going to hugely impact the community itself in a very positive way." "We are definitely thrilled with the news." The school will be delivered as part of a design-build process, in which the Battle River School Division will produce only enough documents to describe the requirements of the building. The requirements and contract documents will then be tendered through the selection process. "The money for the school is going to be held by the province, and won't come to us at all," said Battle River School Division board chair Cheryl Smith. "There is no option for us to spend the money in any other way." Though details for the

school are still hazy, it is estimated that the building would be big enough to accommodate up to 400 students. "I think what we are seeing is that a lot of the new facilities are going to be pod-like in that they can be adapted based on enrolment," said Battle River School Division superintendent Dr. Larry Payne. "The permanency of the structure won't be like it used to be." The Bawlf school has many barriers to accessibility, obsolete mechanical and electrical systems, and, according to a government press release, poses significant safety hazards for the students. "There were times during this year that there was no heat going into the school," said Naslund. "Kids had to
wear their winter coats until maintenance could get out there and cobble something back together." White said Bawlf school is basically a sixty year old structure. "The division's maintenance department has done an exceptional job of keeping the exterior and parts you see every day looking phenomenal, but behind all that are sixty-year-old electrical systems and plumbing systems, and it is those pieces that really are in need of desperate replacement." Dr. Payne hopes the new school will be able to attract new residents to Bawlf and surrounding areas. "I think that will be one of the benefits of having the newer building," he said. Naslund said the new
school will have to be more handicapped accessible than the one now, as well as be able to accommodate future learning in terms of technology. She said the present school cannot accommodate the degree of technology that is coming and is even here right now. White said there are lots of things on a wish list but, for now, it is simply that – a wish list. "We are going to have to patiently wait and see what the proposal is that is going to be brought forward." Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach said the funding for modernization and construction of schools responds to concerns the government has been hearing for some time. "Our students are the future leaders of our province and deserve positive learning environments," he said. Education Minister Dave Hancock said the investment ensures that Alberta students have safe, caring, respectful and modern learning environments. "It is important that we continue to build positive atmospheres for learning which helps every child succeed and realize their potential." Minister of Infrastructure Ray Danyluk said Alberta Infrastructure will deliver high quality schools that are bright, welcoming spaces, equipped with the latest technology and designed to adapt to changing educational needs. "These will be buildings that work – for students, for teachers, and for the entire
community. We will move forward on these projects immediately and our goal is to open doors for students by 2014." Dr. Payne doesn't anticipate that the construction of a new school in Bawlf will cause very much, if any disruption in the current instruction of students. "We have a lot of land around the existing school and it will be easy to move students over when the new one has been completed," he said. The Battle River School Division has already received calls from area residents questioning the availability of funding to build new schools at a time when it is laying off or terminating staff. "It is important to understand that the funding for the new school is totally separate from our instructional dollars or the division's operating dollars," said Dr. Payne. Smith added that the announcement does not change the challenges that Battle River School Division is facing. "It doesn't impact our budget at all and it certainly doesn't impact the challenges around enrolment going down." All school divisions in Alberta received a 4.54 per cent funding increase from the provincial government this year, which was earmarked to cover a previously negotiated increase in teacher salaries. No other funding increases were received by Battle River, which means no other cost increases have been funded.

Bailey Theatre returns to past grandeur By Murray Green
Welcome back old friend! The next 100-year chapter of the Bailey Theatre was launched with a buzz of excitement of the vast possibilities of the building. People dressed in their finest to pay tribute to the grand re-opening of the historic Bailey Theatre and salute those who made it possible. The Main Street theatre is back and ready to bring out the best in entertainment, arts and culture for future generations. "Isn't this exciting," said emcee John Howard, as the crowd clapped as the evening began. "We are here tonight to celebrate and have a good time. It will give you a taste of what the Bailey Theatre is all about." The original David Theatre was opened on February 23, 1911. A year later it was sold to Stan Bailey and eventually renamed. Just over 100 years after the doors were first opened, a totally renovated modern theatre with old school charm was re-opened with a grand show. The sound was clear, the building shone with past glory and patrons recalled fond memories as the curtains were opened to another chapter on May 21. "We have to honour all those who started the process of restoring this beautiful building about eight years ago," said Bailey Theatre Society president Dan Olofson. "It showed us the benefits of carrying on the process. The early money we received was done by faith and that was valued the most." Then Frank MacInnis added $2.5 million and the federal and provincial governments chipped in to ensure the renovation process would carry through to the end. David Roth made sure of that. "We had some surprises during the renovations, like no foundation in some places," said Roth. "We have a lot of people to thank for making this night possible." He thanked Frank and Beverly MacInnis for their generosity. "I began to realize, we were building something much larger than ourselves and perhaps bigger than the Bailey itself," said Frank who is retired from a very successful construction business. "When I was first asked
to sponsor the Bailey Theatre, my first reaction was gratitude. It was a chance to give back in a personally gratifying way to a community that has given me so much. I've had such a happy and fulfilling career. Furthermore, it was a construction project, and I love construction projects and the optimistic people who build them." The project overcame some major obstacles. A lack of a foundation and pigeon manure were just two of them. "Optimism turns into determination when obstacles arose. Then we have more solutions and contributions," said Frank. "The rally of volunteers became the strength and foundation of this building when there was no foundation. It remains a source of strength and inspiration for me today. All those optimistic dreams and dogged determinations have turned into pride and excitement. It is not just a construction project, but a testament to local initiative. It shows what civic-minded people can do when they work together." Thank you for allowing us to be a part of that." The variety show thrilled the audience with four main acts. The classy Stringbeans Quartet led the show with popular tunes on classic instruments. The in-house About Time Productions theatre group shared their Spontaneous Sputterings with the crowd. The quick thinking young actors and actresses displayed their talents through an improvisation session. Czech-born pianist and comedian Martin Janovsky stole the show with his blend of tickling the ivories with precision along with his Eastern European and Canadian mix of comedy. A traditional African drumming and dance routine by Isokan Afrika tested the full range of sound in the newly renovated theatre. Before the show and during breaks, the theatre society paid tribute to the Frank MacInnis family and speeches were given by John Howard, Dan Olofson, David Roth, MacInnis, MP Kevin Sorsenson and MLA Verlyn Olson. The main room was renamed the Frank MacInnis and Family Auditorium and dedicated with a plaque.
The Stringbeans Quartet electrified the audience with versions of modern hits.
Frank and Beverly MacInnis unveil a plaque to honour past long-time employees.
Martin Janovsky thrilled those who attended the grand opening with his blend of great music and Czech-Canadian humour.

PEN POINTS by Berdie Fowler
Local economy strengthened by serving the needs of persons with disabilities Several weeks ago I had a brand new experience – one that I appreciated very, very much because it offered me a new avenue of independence. Although still in good health for my age, for some months I have not been able to go shopping alone. When in a very large store, the plan has been to find me a seat and whoever is with me will search for and bring items I need for my approval. Thus it was that, on a recent shopping excursion, I waited on a bench near the entrance of one of the largest stores in Camrose while my companion did the walking to find items on my shopping list and bring them to me for my approval. While I waited on the bench, I noticed another shopper enter the store, unplug an electric-powered scooter and ride into the large retail area. I later noticed another shopper return one, plug it back into the power outlet and leave with bags of merchandise. Well! If others could do it, why not I? When my companion returned with samples of items I might like, we decided that I would take the one scooter still available. I noted that it would go forward, backward, turn corners and speed was adjustable. Off the two of us went. I was pleased with my newly-found mobility, I felt more satisfied because I could then see complete selections rather than just samples brought to me, and guess what: I also did some impulse buying, picking up items not on my list but which I saw along the way which were both wants and needs. That store sold more goods that day because it provided an extra convenience for a disabled customer – and at no extra charge, which I thought was mighty fine, too! The inspiration for this column came from a news article in the May 24 issue of The Camrose Booster. It recorded comments of Camrosian Deborah Morgan, who has mobility challenges and retains much of her independence with a motorized scooter. While she appreciates the many conveniences and kindnesses of merchants and the local government, she draws attention to numerous barriers that still pose difficulties for handicapped persons – like steps up to curbs and into stores or office entrances, heavy doors, narrow aisles, dimly lit restaurants, untidy spaces littered with hazards for visually impaired persons. It is commonly believed that persons with physical disabilities spend less than others. That’s probably true. However, it is equally true that the amount they spend is increased in proportion to the safety and ease with which they are able to access shopping, entertainment and other services. Like Deborah Morgan, I appreciate very much the kindnesses and conveniences already available for persons with any kind of disability, whether physical, mental, visual or agerelated. I am grateful for compassionate community leaders who, throughout the vibrant history of Camrose, have attended to the needs of its vulnerable residents – persons disabled for whatever reason, including age. Serving those needs has provided one of our community’s largest and most consistent payrolls. It has done so in the past; it will continue to do so long into the future. It’s an industry on which we can and should continue to build.
Dear Editor, If taxpayers want to question MLAs, or Mr. Olson in particular regarding his statement (May, 3/11, Camrose Booster) “Show me a new school that is not full of children” and the budget deficit that he blames on “infrastructure that is being built” (contrary to others who proffer examples of excessive unjustifiable over-spending like two new museums for downtown Calgary and Edmonton), their questions will have to wait till October, because Legislature adjourned Dear Editor: May 12/11, three weeks early As I look around at the parof the June 2/11 date listed in ties which are available here in their Sessional Calendar (www. 2010) grid maps, and National Energy Board export permits clearly indicate. The recent WikiLeaks memos (Paul Cellucci, US ambassador to Canada, 2003; Smith, Alberta’s former Energy Minister), in addition to the CanadaNorthwest-California Transmission Options Study (May 2006) both further verify the export of electricity to the USA. Will Mr. Olson and his fellow PC cohorts, finally admit that the transmission line projects foisted on Albertans, at Albertan’s expense, are for export, and benefit only private utility companies? Or will he, like Energy Minister Liepert, upon being questioned after the leaks, still (Calgary Herald, May 17/11) insist it’s “ludicrous to think the transmission projects are for power export?” Since my earlier letter, Bill 10 was passed (23 to 8) with only 31 votes being cast by the 83 MLAs we elected to the House. A “quorum” in the House requires only 20 votes, less than ¼ of the possible votes (Standing Orders 5.1). Bill 10 now “binds” all Albertans (by leaving Bill 36, Section 15.1 unamended), and, contrary to Mr. Olson’s statements, still denies Albertans access to an independent hearing and access to the Courts. At the (May 20/11) AUC Process Meeting, despite repeated requests from farmers and lawyers to schedule the Hearings later (after harvest) to allow a proper defense against the proposed HVDC lines, ATCO urged AUC to move Hearing times up two to three weeks earlier to “mitigate [ATCO’s] construction costs.” Farmers and landowners left the session feeling affronted. Canadian Northern Society to host Prairie Fun Days in August By Dan Jensen
Watch model aircraft fly. Get lost in a corn maze. Hand crank ice cream. Visit a heritage home or 1883 church and cemetery. Hike amazing trails. You'll be able to do all those things and more during Canadian Northern Society's first-ever Prairie Fun Days August 20 and 21. "It's a collection of events and attractions throughout Camrose County that we have combined into a self-guided driving tour," said Canadian Northern Society spokesperson Barb McDonald. "You'll be able to start the tour anywhere you wish and take in as many as you wish from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour stops will include Alberta's Littlest Airport, the Camrose County Nature Conservation Centre, Meeting Creek Railway Station and Elevator, the Bashaw Fire Hall Museum, Ferintosh Manor Bed and Breakfast, St. Thomas Catholic Church, Verdun School, Hay Lakes Telegraph Park, Kingman Museum and Tea House, Jo Jo's Maze
Craze and 18-Hole Mini Golf, and Hampton School. "Jo Jo's Maze Craze will stay open Saturday evening for a campfire," said Ms. McDonald. "They're encouraging people to bring a flashlight so they can go through the maze at night." Those who decide to stop in Bashaw will be able to join the town's 100th birthday celebrations, or catch an old movie at the historic Majestic Theatre. Hay Lakes Telegraph Park will provide the opportunity to visit with interpreters of life in earlier days, try stooking a grain crop, see harvest machinery in action, fly kites, participate in crafts and visit the solar-powered Scouting cabin. In Meeting Creek, Harper's Bistro will be serving a buffet breakfast from 9:00 to 1:30 in the Community Centre. A descriptive brochure, complete with a map of Prairie Fun Days event locations, will be available at visitor information centres and from sponsors throughout central Alberta this summer.
Canadian Northern Society got the idea for Prairie Fun Days from Beaver County, which conducts a successful Beaver County Bounty event. "We thought it would be a good way to capture the imagination: to entice visitors from beyond our borders and encourage residents from the county and Camrose to holiday at home," said Ms. McDonald. "There are so many scenic places and historic attractions that people in this area still do not know about. We have heard so many people say that they have heard about a certain attraction but have never been there." Camrose County is in full support of Prairie Fun Days and has allocated funding to cover a certain portion of the related expenses. Funding is also being provided for the event by Tourism Alberta. Any questions about Prairie Fun Days and the self-guided driving tour may be directed to McDonald at 780-672-6431 or Janine Carroll at 780-6723099.

Ferintosh ready to party By Dan Jensen
They're getting out the party hats. The Village of Ferintosh is planning a full weekend of activities July 1 to 3 in celebration of its 100th anniversary. "Everybody is working hard towards the common goal of making this the biggest and best celebration in the last 100 years," explained Glenda Beagle, spokesperson for the Ferintosh Centennial Committee. The committee has been making plans for the celebration for the past three years. "We have a core of about 15 members but the number of volunteers who have been involved in helping us is much larger than that," said Beagle. "We estimate we will be using about 65 to 70 volunteers once the weekend arrives." Registrations will get underway at 4:00 p.m. on the 1st, followed by a hot dog supper courtesy of the Community Club at 5:00. Live entertainment under the big top tent will run from 7:00 to 8:00. Saturday's activities will begin with a firemen's pancake breakfast at 8:00, speeches from Camrose and District Horticultural Association members Margaret Wallace (left) and Darlene Brash trimmed rose bushes outside dignitaries at 9:30 and a parade the Bill Fowler Centre May 26. at 11:00. dogs, pie and ice cream cones. A silent auction will be held at the Rec Centre, with all proceeds going to support the centennial celebrations. A celebration supper will begin with light entertainment and cocktails at 5:00 and the meal itself at 6:00. An evening concert beginning at 8:30 will feature Jo Hikk, a group that has two videos on CMT and has released two albums. "We only have room for 450 for the supper and the concert, so the tickets will have to be purchased ahead of time," said Beagle. The party will wind down on Sunday with a non denominational church service at 10:30, followed by a pot luck lunch. The Friends of Little Beaver will be having a display from noon until 2:00. The Village of Ferintosh has received a grant of $44,000 for the centennial celebration from Heritage Canada's Building Communities through Arts and Heritage, money that has been put towards new street signs, a mural on the outside of the Rec Centre, and a bench that will be placed at the gates of the public park on main street in memory of Duane McKenna. "Duane spent all of his time in Ferintosh and was the village foreman," said McKenna. He always made sure that seniors were able to get out of their driveways after a snowfall, that the streets were plowed, and that the garbage was collected. He did so many little things that no one asked him to do, and made everyone feel welcome." The park bench will be dedicated immediately after the parade and handing out of birthday cake. The Ferintosh Centennial Committee is currently selling raffle tickets for a one-and-onehalf hour hot air balloon ride that will take place, weather permit-
ting, on the second day of the celebration. "The winner of the raffle will have the opportunity to see Ferintosh and area from a unique point of view," said Beagle. The present Ferintosh area was originally a noted meeting place for natives who named the area Amiskoogas Saskihigan, meaning little lake belonging to the beaver. During the 1880s, European fur traders hunted buffalo in the area and then travelled on to Winnipeg for the fur trade. In the 1890s ranchers established in the watershed area and, after the discovery of rich soil, settlers began cultivation in the early 1900s, thus creating the first economic activity. The first settlers arrived by rail from the Edmonton-Calgary railway that travelled through the Wetaskiwin area. The arrival of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway line in 1910 marked the year of settlers, homesteaders and grain farming. The Village of Ferintosh was first known as Lassen, after the first settlement of homesteaders in the area belonging to J.H. Lassen. The village was renamed Ferintosh by resident Dr. J.R. McLeod in 1910 (a member of the first Alberta legislature) due to the mail delivery confusion with a nearby town of a similar name. The centennial celebration is expected to attract nearly 1,000 visitors from across western Canada and parts of the United States. "We have one person who is coming all the way from Alabama after having read about the centennial on our website, and we have others from British Columbia and Saskatchewan who have expressed an interest," said Beagle. More information on the centennial celebrations, as well as tickets for the celebration supper, are available from Beagle at Marlin Travel, 780-6796811.
package and as a result were able to draw more rodeo fans," said Lee. The chair for the 2012 rodeo committee is Steve Kushnerick. "He and his committee will be working hard in June on getting things lined up for the next one," said Lee. Tickets for the 2012 Camrose Spring Classic will be released for pre-sale this December. The CRE hosts a pair of major events in April, the first being the Growing Rural Tourism Conference. "The one we just completed received great reviews and feedback from delegates and partners," said Wynn McLean. "We put together a very strong program." A special visitor at the conference was Premier Ed Stelmach. The Growing Rural Tourism Conference has become almost an iconic tourism event for people who are involved in the rural tourism industry or economic development. "It has become a must-attend event," said McLean. The 12th annual Growing Rural Tourism Conference will
be held at the CRE in April of 2012. The second major event in April is the Celebrating Women Conference. "We're going to start planning the 2012 conference in September," said CRE training and special projects manager and Celebrating Women's Conference event manager Jenn Filip. The Celebrating Women Conference this year was completely sold out. "We had people who, at the last minute, were wanting to get into the trade show," said Filip. One of the highlights of the conference was a fashion show featuring products from local businesses. "Each business donated an item for a raffle, the proceeds of which were donated to the a non profit organization in Camrose," said Filip. The Camrose Regional Exhibition operates approximately 360 days a year, welcoming between 250,000 and 350,000 guests. The total number of event days per year is 1,400, with 103 of those being devoted to agriculture and rural development.
CRE getting ready for another busy year By Dan Jensen
Camrose Regional Exhibition is setting its sights on another successful year. "We had a strong 2010-2011 event season, thanks in part to the generous support of community volunteers and are expecting a repeat of that in 2011-2012," said CRE general manager Wynn McLean last week. Camrose Regional Exhibition conducts six major events every year, each of which appeals to a different demographic. "We can't say one event is more popular than the others, they all do pretty well," said McLean. "They are all important and different." The next major event on CRE's schedule is the July 28, 29, 30 and 31 Big Valley Jamboree. The event is produced by Panhandle Productions, a company the CRE purchased in 2010. "Panhandle producer Larry Werner does a fantastic job every year of putting together a strong lineup of top notch country talent and this year is no different," said McLean. Anyone who is willing to help
CRE with 50/50 and Nevada ticket sales during the time of the Jamboree is encouraged to call 780-672-3648. In November, CRE will once again stage the Festival of Trees celebration, an event that it took over in 2010 after several years of successful operation by the Citizen Advocacy Society. "We learned a lot from last year and have been doing a lot of fine tuning to make it even better for 2011," said CRE's Marilyn Lee. "It's a great kick-off to the holiday season." CRE representatives will be out in the community in the next few weeks marketing the festival and providing partnership opportunities. The Festival of Trees will be followed by the 26th annual Canadian Bull Congress in January. "We've already started our planning for the event and expect that it will be another sell-out," said Lee. The Canadian Bull Congress will be sending three delegates to this summer's Royal Highland Show in Scotland.
"It's the most important agricultural show in Europe and it's a chance for us to market the Canadian Bull Congress and the Canadian beef industry," said Lee. The delegates are able to attend with the support of the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. The major event in February at the CRE is the Camrose Trade Show. "The trade show this past February was one of the better ones we have done," said Lee. "The exhibitors were pleased with what we put together for them and the attendance reflected a quality show." Planning for the 2012 Camrose Trade Show will begin in September. The fact that the Camrose Spring Classic Rodeo had a sell-out for its Saturday performance and near sell-outs for its Friday and Sunday performances this past March is an indicator of how popular it has become. "Rodeo committee chair Ken Hildebrandt and his committee did an excellent job of putting together a strong entertainment

Augustana centennial celebration June 3 to 5 From June 3 to 5, the University of Alberta's Camrose campus will host the biggest party of the last hundred years. Hundreds of alumni from Augustana Campus, Augustana University College and the Camrose Lutheran College will visit their alma mater for events, demonstrations and music all weekend, culminating in Sunday’s centenary convocation of the graduates of 2011. After the reception and family campfire on Friday night, Vikings Athletics alumni will enjoy a pub night. Saturday will be packed with open houses from campus departments, lectures, current faculty and student demonstrations, plus a largely locally-sourced barbecue and showcase stage with alumni and faculty bands performing. Centenary installations will be on display all weekend, including an exhibition of student artwork from the past 18 years. From a special choral reunion, several generations of Augustana choristers will perform together at Saturday’s banquet. The banquet will be followed by a lounge featuring legendary Canadian rockers 54-40. For event and registration information, visit www.augustana.ualberta.ca/homecoming/. St. Mary’s Hospital will have a new chapel by the fall of 2012. The overall structural design has been approved and work is now underway to develop the more detailed plans. Cherylyn Antymniuk, Executive Director for St. Mary’s Hospital, is pleased the project is finally coming to fruition. “When the hospital was first built in 1989, the chapel space was combined with a multi-purpose meeting room. Our hospital is a busy place and this meeting room is constantly booked so a quiet sacred space no longer exists in the facility, “she said. The need for a new chapel was identified over eight years ago, but circumstance and changes in the health care system prevented the hospital from moving ahead with the project. All approvals are now in place. The news of the chapel development is especially exciting for the community and donors who have been raising funds for the project. According to John Howard, chair of the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, when the hospital
began planning to redevelop the chapel in 2003, the Foundation made it their priority and have been raising money ever since. “The Camrose community, and the many people in the area who use St. Mary’s have been very generous and I am pleased that we are moving forward with the project.” In 2004, St. Mary’s Hospital contracted Rockliff Pierzchajlo Architects & Planners to provide preliminary design and cost estimates for a chapel addition to the hospital. The architectural firm has again been retained to design the chapel based on the original plans. The estimated cost of the chapel development is $640,000 and will be totally funded by the hospital foundation. “We have raised $340,000 in support of the chapel over the past eight years and we are committed to raising all funds necessary to complete the project,” said Howard. “This project is very important to the community of Camrose. St. Mary’s Hospital is such an asset to our city and we believe the chapel will benefit patients,
families and staff with a much needed space for reflection and prayer.” Covenant Health is committed to serving people of all faiths, cultures and circumstances through a holistic approach to care by healing the body, enriching the mind and nurturing the soul. Antymniuk noted that the new chapel and enhancing spiritual care services is a priority for St. Mary’s Hospital. “This project supports our mission and honours the legacy of the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul who founded St. Mary’s in 1924. It is also a testament to our Foundation and the Camrose community who continue to raise money for the new chapel at St. Mary’s. We are grateful for their ongoing support.” Antymniuk said the steering committee is currently consulting with stakeholders to determine a common vision for the use of the chapel that will best meet the needs of both the facility and the community now and into the future. Construction is slated to begin this fall.
Calendar tells stories of survival By Dan Jensen
When Jennifer Flint and Crystal Nahajowich decided last February to produce their Calendar for a Cure their first concern was whether they would be able to find enough survivors to highlight. Turns out they didn't have to worry. "In a matter of a few weeks we had 27 of the most amazing survivors," said Ms. Nahajowich. "I think we ended up with 31." The calendar was launched at a barbecue and silent auction May 1. As of May 17, the total amount raised for the Canadian Cancer Society through calendar sales, donations and auction items was just over $6,000. "The support has been amazing," said Ms. Nahajowich. "We have had people from New Zealand email asking us to send them a calendar." The calendar's stories include those of a 71-year-old widow whose life expectancy at the time of her cancer diagnosis in February of 2010 was eight to ten months, a 26-year-old woman who was just 18 when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a 30-year-old new mother who has been living with level 4 breast cancer, a young father who was told he

would be lucky to see his son's first birthday, brothers who were diagnosed nine years apart, and a teacher who has had many surgeries and been forced to overcome a variety of obstacles. There's Ms. Nahajowich's own recounting of her diagnosis with Lynch Syndrome and her subsequent commitment to do everything in her power to help find a cure, and the story of Colleen and Wes Kerr, who lost their first son, Bryce, to cancer in 2005 and are now watching and praying as their second son, Nolan, wages his own fight against a brain tumour. "Each and every one of the survivors has touched our hearts," said Ms. Nahajowich.
"They have the most amazing personalities, strength like we can only hope to have, and determination beyond anything we have ever seen. There were many smiles and a few tears, but best of all, a whole lot of hope in each and every one of the photo shoots." The cost of producing the calendar was supported by 30 local businesses. "We were trying to get a few sponsors to cover the printing costs. We had no idea we would sell out," said Ms. Nahajowich. "When we explained to people what the calendar was all about they jumped right on board. We cannot thank the community enough for its support. It makes us proud to call Camrose home."

Try not to get bitten this spring By Dan Jensen
Ah, the smells of spring – the blooming lilac bush, the fresh cut grass, the mosquito spray. It's hard to go anywhere these days without picking up on the scent of the latter, as Camrosians try to protect themselves from hordes of mosquitoes that are just waiting to draw their blood. It's reached the stage where stores are finding it hard to keep enough product on the shelves. Canadian Tire owner Dave Jewell hasn't seen anything like it. "This is the earliest we have ever had a run like this on mosquito products," said Jewell. "I just the other day ordered another $20,000 worth of product to keep up with the demand." Camrose Community Services parks director Chris Clarkson said the mosquito numbers are higher this year because of the increased snow melt. "We have a lot more areas covered with water than we have had in years past," he said. "When you get more water spreading out over certain areas you are going to get more mosquitoes." The areas that are the worst are usually in the parks, where there is tall grass and more standing water. It's not unusual for golfers to see clouds of them as they line up their shots. "I was at the golf course last weekend and the humming from the mosquitoes was like being underneath a power line," said Wynn McLean. The City of Camrose has not sprayed for mosquitoes since the mid 1990s, when it received a matching per capita

On the road … the automotive section of
Chevy Silverado HD Motortrend Truck of the Year
Pete Pastuck McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet By Dan Jensen
The Silverado HD delivers a hefty 11 per cent increase in highway fuel-efficiency (based on GM testing). At the same time, 0 to 96 km/h acceleration times have improved.
The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd. in Camrose represents nothing less than the reinvention of the heavy-duty pickup. "From new best-in-class power and hauling capabilities to an even stronger chassis and enhanced power control, the Silverado is setting a new benchmark in the industry," said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet dealer principal Will McClellan. "You can see why Motortrend magazine named it 2011 truck of the year." The Silverado heavy-duty lineup is broader than ever, with 11 2500HD models and eight single- and dual-rearwheel 3500HD models – including a new 3500 HD Crew Cab. The 2500HD and 3500HD models are distinguished by the power dome-style hood with a new louvred design, as well as a new grille and full-width chrome steel front bumper. A new lineup of 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheel/tire combinations is featured too.
Better control
gains associated with free-wheeling – without using locking hubs.
The added power and hauling capabilities of the 2011 Silverado HD are matched by beefed-up brake components and the latest in driver control technology. The front rotors are significantly larger – they are now a full 365 mm diameter. Control is now enhanced by the StabiliTrak system and Trailer Sway Control – standard on all single rear wheel 2500HD and 3500HD models. StabiliTrak compares your steering input with the truck's actual track, intervening automatically whenever it detects a loss of lateral traction (sideslip), understeer (plowing), or oversteer (fishtailing). It can return the truck to your intended driving line by incrementally applying an individual brake and, if necessary, by reducing engine torque. Hill Start Assist holds the truck stationery for about a second after you release the brake on a five per cent or greater incline, enabling you to begin to accelerate before the truck starts to roll backward.
The available re-engineered Duramax 6.6 litre V8 Turbo Diesel generates a colossal 397 horsepower and an earth-shaking 765 lb.-ft. of torque, outstripping all previous Chevrolet diesel trucks. As well as being the most powerful diesel engine Chevrolet has ever built, it is also the cleanest burning. This reflects Chevrolet's ongoing commitment to greener technologies across the lineup. Key to this improvement is selective catalytic reduction using Diesel Emissions Fluid downstream in the exhaust. It reduces the amount of harmful Nitrogen Oxide emissions by 63 per cent – representing the latest technology available. The standard Vortec 6.0 litre V8 engine is more capable than ever, with a fifth-wheel trailer towing rating of 6,668 kg – 13 per cent higher than before. The segment-exclusive Allison six-speed automatic transmission uses the same technology that is used in many medium-duty commercial truck applications, so it is engineered to take the abuse associated with enor4x4 Silverado HD's four-wheel-drive system uses an auto- mous loads. It is engineered exclusively for higher torque demands and has specific gear ratios to maximize the matic disconnect mechanism in the front axle to provide "shift-on-the-fly" convenience, as well as the fuel efficiency performance of the Duramax diesel.
While the heavy lifting associated with the engineering of the new Silverado HD concentrated on the features that increased capabilities, the quality of the driver experience wasn't overlooked. The moment you enter the LTZ, its heated, leather appointed front bucket seats with power 10-way seat adjusters – and Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity – make that clear. All Silverado HD models feature the added safety, security and convenience of OnStar with Turn-byTurn Navigation. The touch-screen of the DVD-based navigation system radio performs double duty – it also is used to display the available rearview camera system, which enables you to see obstacles behind you when in reverse. Silverado HD LT and LTZ models offer oversize storage areas for those riding in the front row. The LT's lockable underseat storage area also has a 12-volt electrical outlet. You can see the new Chevy Silverado HD at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 3850-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-7355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.
Stronger front suspension
The all-new frame provides a more rigid and durable platform for the truck, not only increasing strength but also ride quality. Large precision-forged control arms, in conjunction with the biggest steering gear ever in a Chevrolet HD make the front suspension capable of handling much greater loads. The dual front jounce bumpers provide two load transfer paths to handle those loads. In addition, the steering knuckle is taller and 66 per cent heavier. In fact, the front suspension is so strong that all 4x4 models can now be equipped with the available Snow Plow Prep Package. Even better, the torsion bar suspension ride height can be adjusted when you attach or remove the snow plow. A 20 per cent larger rear suspension helps handle bigger payloads. Wider leaf springs and an asymmetric design increase wind-up stiffness, to reduce axle-hop and to contribute to the higher Gross Axle Weight Ratings. New measures that help isolate and absorb bumps include redesigned hydraulic body mounts on Extended and Crew Cab models, larger engine and transmission mounts, a longer wheelbase and a wider track.

Johnson returns for university hockey
By Murray Green
Fort McMurrayOilBarons'former captain Adam Johnson of Hay Lakes has committed to playing hockey for the Augustana Vikings in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for the upcoming 201112 season. "His strong leadership skills on and off the ice made Adam a very important part of the Oil Barons’ success. Adam was a player who was very versatile and was able to play in all situations," said Oil Barons' coach and general manager Gord Thibodeau. During his three years in Fort McMurray, he played 191 regular season and playoff games where he collected 66 goals and added 91 assists. “His dedication to the team, both on and off the ice, is a coach’s dream, said Barons' coach Tom Keca. “His work ethic is contagious and he is respected not only by his teammates, but by his opponents as well. Johnson was awarded the 2011 Enerflex AJHL Scholarship. He was also a finalist for the most dedicated player award.
“We are very excited to have Adam join our hockey program, said Vikings' coach Blaine Gusdal. “He is a proven leader with great character and an abundance of playoff experience in the AJHL. Adam will be counted on in many facets of our game and I expect he will have a tremendous career as a Viking. Adam also played for the Camrose Midget Kodiaks. His high school principal described him as a top student and exemplary role model who achieved honours in academics. “These are examples of the attributes that Adam will bring to our program, added Gusdal. “I anticipate he will fit in very well with the group of Vikings we have assembled. Johnson is enrolled in business this fall and chose Augustana for many reasons. “First, it is close to home and I will have family and friends at every game. The fact I can get a U of A degree in a small school was a huge factor and when I was growing up in Camrose, the Vikings were role models to me and now I hope I can be the same to younger kids in Camrose.
Johnson, a former Camrose Minor Hockey player, finished his last junior year as the team captain and was the Oil Barons’ leading scorer. This season, he had 28 goals and 30 assists for 58 points.

Neil Osborne, Brad Merritt, Matt Johnson and Dave Genn make up 54-40. The band will be celebrating 30 years and a new CD release when they play at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on June 4. By Murray Green
Camrose music fans will have the opportunity to celebrate the legacy of one of Canada's all-time favourite bands. The band 54-40 kicks off its 30th anniversary tour on June 4 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. "Lots of things have changed over that time period, but not so much with us," said band leader Neil Osborne. "We added a new guitar player, Dave Genn, about nine years ago." Neil said the touring and creating albums hasn't gone stale. "We continue to play music, write songs and enjoy heading down the road. We feel lucky to be here and still doing what we love for so long. When we first started, there wasn't a lot of easy access to get your music out there. We did it on sheer determination and will. If you had an album, you were ahead of the pack." The band consists of Neil Osborne, Brad Merritt, Matt Johnson and Dave Genn. Inspired by the punk/new music scene of Vancouver, B.C., 54-40 first performed at the dawn of 1981. After 30 years, 16 releases and more than 2,000 performances, the secret to 54-40's longevity is their ability to redefine and reinvent themselves – taking longtime 54-40 fans on a thrill ride, and continually picking up new young fans along the way. "In the beginning, you had to cut your teeth on the road, which is a good way to do it. Unfortunately today, bands just can't get gigs because of less venues and it isn't as financially possible for some bands," Neil explained. "It is easy to make a CD now. You can do it in your own home. Playing live is good because you can get instant feedback from the public. That part is lacking these days for bands starting out." Neil likes the entire cycle of the music business. "You go out on the road and receive immediate feedback. You develop an emotional attachment to people and then write a song about it. You rehearse it, record it and then play it for people and again you receive that feedback. The bridge you build between the two is really one of the greatest feelings." In Camrose, 54-40 will be featuring an unbelievable catalogue of hit songs including "Baby Ran, She La, Casual Viewin' , One Gun, Ocean Pearl, Love You All, Music Man, I Go Blind, One Day In Your Life , Assoholic, Radio Luv Song , Baby Have Some Faith , Miss You , Blame Your Parents , Easy to Love, Crossing a Canyon, Since When, Nice to Luv You" and "Lies to Me."
The songs "I Go Blind", "Ocean Pearl" and "Casual Viewing" have been crowd favourites for years. "You see and feel the crowd light up with all three of those songs. You then feed off of the crowd's excitement and it makes playing even more exciting," said Neil. "That feeling doesn't grow old, no matter how many times we play it. We are not going to deny that experience to us or our fans." Most Albertans would list "I Go Blind" as their favourite 54-40 song. "Originally, we were writing another song and it sounded a bit the same. We then married the songs to give it a unique, but flowing arrangement to it." They will also perform some of their songs from a new CD, Lost in the City, that will be released in early June. Lost in the City was recorded throughout 2010 with long-time friend and producer Dave Oglivie. The band worked in a variety of studios, including Hipposonic (formerly Mushroom), 604 Studio, and the band’s own studio, Smiling Buddha Enjoyment Complex. The nine-song release features 54-40’s sonically pleasing melodies with captivating vocal arrangements in a collection delivered in the unmistakable 54-40 style. Guest appearances by Tom Hooper (Grapes of Wrath) round out the ensemble, and the band has never sounded better. “Lyrically, the concept was to take expressions from traditional blues songs and apply them to a 54-40 approach in the 2011 world. What’s so common today is the increasing pace of life and the pervading sense many of us have of being overwhelmed. Against this backdrop, Lost in the City was born,” said Neil. He collaborated with his youngest daughter Kandle Osborne on the photography and the album imagery, creating a back-story for each character about their association with the new band and how they made it “here” in 2011. “The characters in the cover shot look as though they’re waiting at a train station … with no other purpose than wondering, 'what’s next?' in the linear sequence of events that make up their lives.” For more of 54-40’s history or to listen go to www.5440.com and listen to the new songs. "Generally, we will keep "Love you All" as our last song of the night because it has a good message and it is a nice way to end the evening." The band may not play as much as they did when they were younger, but they still put on a show to remember.

Masterpiece of their own By Dan Jensen
While bakers and decorators were putting the finishing touches on the wedding cake for Prince William and Kate, The Art of Cake owners Gloria Bednarz and Guenter Hess were working on a masterpiece of their own. Their six-tiered vanilla pound wedding cake was the centrepiece of a Royal Wedding celebration held at the Chateau Louis Hotel in Edmonton April 29. "It took us 20 hours to complete," said Gloria. "We decorated it with sculpted white chocolate roses and we created a Westminster Abbey cake topper as well." The celebration at the Chateau Louis was held simultaneously with the royal wedding in London. "They had these great big TV screens so that everyone could watch the wedding as it unfolded," said Gloria. "We celebrated in grand style." The cake, though smaller than the one for the royal couple, had many of the same details. "We had to guess what the cake would look like and what the theme was because nobody was saying anything," said Gloria. "When we finally saw a picture of the royal cake we noticed that the roses and the colours we had chosen for ours were actually quite similar." Born into a large family in the Strome area, Gloria has been in the cake decorating business almost since graduating from high school in Daysland. According to her Facebook page, "she recognized talent in the kitchen at an early age and also learned the entertainment value of good food." The guiding principle she and her husband, Guenter follow in making specialized, made-to-order cakes, is that a cake has the power to transform a small get-together into an event worth calling home about. With more than 50 years of combined experience, Gloria and Guenther definitely know what they are doing. In addition to their medals and achievements, they have won the Nina Haggerty cake walk – a competition that connects Edmonton celebrities and cake designers – for the last three years in a row. "The cake walk is a great charitable event but it is great, too, because we get to showcase our talents and compete with the best cake decorators in Edmonton," said Gloria. The owners of The Art of Cake have seen interest in the cake business grow significantly over the last few years due in part to specialty channels like the Food Network. "People are looking now for something very specific for certain events, and they are more willing to foot the budget that is required to make these great custom cakes," said Gloria. "The cakes are very labour intensive and each one is a masterpiece of its own, because you never do the same one twice."
Miss Margie McCrea
Julia Karen Naslund
Miss Margie McCrea of Camrose passed away May 20, 2011, at the age of 94 years. She was predeceased by her brother Barney and her sisters Bertha Watt and Jeanie Sears. She leaves to mourn her sister Isabel (Babs) Paddon of Edmonton and her nieces and nephews. She was born December 15, 1916, and spent her life teaching high school sciences. A funeral service was held on Friday, May 27, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. from Camrose United Church with Rev. Dr. Alan Richards officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Camrose United Church or the charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be made at www.weberfuneralhome.ca.
Julia was born on October 4, 1925, in Bergsjo, Sweden. She passed away on May 18, 2011, in Red Deer, Alberta. Julia immigrated from Sweden in 1926 with her parents Anders and Christina Larson, and her eldest brother Lars. She had three more siblings born in Canada – Agnes, Norman and Norma. Through the years, her passion was cooking which she made her career. Julia used her skills when she had boarders in her own home, when she cooked in lumber camps, owned a cafe, worked at Alberta Department of Highways and, lastly, worked at Camrose Children’s Center. She always loved to entertain people in her own home. No matter what the circumstances, there was always a scrumptious meal on the table ... no one ever went hungry. Gardening, embroidery and cross stitch gave Julia many hours of enjoyment. However, family visits made her extremely happy. Her memory will be cherished by her remaining family which include three children Linda (Bill) House, Chilliwack, BC, Janet (Dallas) Berdahl, Benalto, AB, and Deb (Boyd) Wilson, Fort St. John, BC; seven grandchildren Kevin (Joann), Derek, Gavin (Christina), Kent, Harry (Bea), Jodi and Keri (Clinton); and six great-grandchildren Meghan, Austin, Evan, Aage, Haley and Mitchel; sister-in-law Doris Larson; as well as several nieces and nephews. Julia was predeceased by her parents; brothers Norman and Lars; sisters Agnes and Norma; and her husbands Walter Seefried and Stanley Naslund. Julia’s (Mom’s) passing has left a void in the hearts of many people. It is the hope of the family that her memories will help fill that void. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jacques Vaillancourt officiating. Inurnment followed in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or the charity of one’s choice. To send condolences, please visit www. burgarfuneralhome.com.

Camrose enjoys a classic weekend of fun
The Camrose Cruisers' annual Show 'N Shine was held on downtown streets on May 28 while the Camrose Airport was busy on May 29 with the Fly-in Breakfast. Clockwise from top left: Modified vehicles reflected a past time with plenty of shiny chrome. Camrose Fish and Game Association volunteers Norm Ma and Tracey Erickson cooked breakfast for hundreds of people inside an airport hangar. Old roadsters drew a crowd on 51 Street. Bob Bailey couldn't resist a peek inside the cockpit of an L-39 Alabatros, a 1984 Czechoslovakia-built jet trainer/fighter owned by Ed McDonald, from St. Albert and based at Josephburg, near Fort Saskatchewan. Some of the classic vehicles had some added muscle to make it thunder down the streets. Sylvester popped in for a view of Show 'N Shine competition. Photos by Dan Jensen and Murray Green.

For Want Ad service, please phone 780-672-3142 before six on Friday Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest Exaggerating your item’s fi ner points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Shock wins final league game By Murray Green
The Battle River Shock midget Tier 1 football team played one of their best halves in the last game of the regular season this spring. Battle River defeated the Millwoods Grizzlies 29-8 at Johnny Bright Park in Edmonton on May 14. "The Shock offense was led by Greg Fowler of Red Deer with two touchdown runs," said Kelly McCheyne of the Shock. "The defensive star was Jordan McNabb of Camrose with two interceptions, including a 19-yard return for a touchdown to complete the Shock scoring." The game was tied 8-8 at half time. Then it was all Battle River after that. The Shock took the lead early in the third quarter. The Grizzlies had tied the game on a 108-yard punt return, but it was all for naught because of a penalty. Paul Fuller of Wetaskiwin had a quarterback sack, Sheldon Wiebe of Lacombe and Brad Huhnold of Sylvan Lake had a fumble recovery to also help give the Shock the victory. Local players on the Tier 1 club include Jason Atherton, Daniel Christensen, Garcha, Jordan McNabb, Stephen Nesdoly and Skyler Rambeau.

County to purchase school site By Murray Green
Camrose County is going to purchase property in Armena to allow for building a playground for the community. Councillors have agreed to purchase two parcels of land totalling about nine acres at a regular meeting on May 10. The County will be purchasing the land from the Battle River School Division for a total cost of $112,000 (including GST) with funding to come from the debt retirement reserve account in the capital budget. The land sale also includes structures located on the property. The large parcel contains 8.1 acres of land that includes a bus garage, which is still in use. The other .9 acre in a second parcel is the actual site of the old school. The proposed playground would be built on the large parcel but not near the old school grounds or bus garage. "When I met with the Battle River School Division administration, I negotiated the 8.1 parcel," said Camrose County administrator Steve Gerlitz. Then the old school grounds portion of land came up. I offered $112,000 for both. This then gives us the option of turning it back into residential land, should Armena grow in the future." Currently, the school board has a bus garage they are still using. Camrose County agreed to lease back the garage for $1, but the Battle River School Division will be responsible for utilities, insurance, maintenance and other standard costs associated with its operation. The County added a provision that if the school division doesn't need the garage it could give it to the county. "This allows us to put the playground where the community wants it," said Gerlitz. "I went above the 8.1 acres we planned on, but I see this as an opportunity of purchasing the land for future development." Councillor Doug Lyseng had some concerns about the smaller property. "When the school was demolished, everything was pushed into the basement. The gym was in the basement, and everything, including old pianos, was pushed into the gym, crunched down, and soil was pushed on top of it. Is this going to cause a problem if we want to sell or reclaim the land?" Administrator Gerlitz indicated they could look at it at that time. "We could sell it on an as is basis. I think we should get the title to it anyway and when it comes time to do something, we take a look at it. It is something we have to be aware of in the future." Councillor Trevor Miller was concerned about environmental hazards. "I don't think it was a landfill," said Gerlitz. "We would have to get some testing done. We had the same situation in Round Hill with the elevator. We had an environmental assessment done and it was fine. It (school building) is not a big area." Council agreed to purchase both parcels of land from the school board.

Fankhanel tracks history with old map By Murray Green
Morris Fankhanel was always intrigued with his aunt's old map of Alberta. The 1913 version contained many of the new towns and hamlets that popped up after Alberta became a province. "We (he and his brothers) would crawl under a bed and look at this map and then put it away for a few months. Then we would look at it again," said Morris. Years passed from his childhood. Morris again found the map when his parents left the house to their children. The old map brought back a few memories and a dilemma of what to do with the relic. "It started out by trying to find out what was this map made. The map was a New Empire Series fifth edition map of Alberta and through my research I have determined it is from around 1912-13. It was held in care by my great aunt A.C. Essen (nee Johnson), who was a school teacher. I found it again in 1955 when my mom and dad bought the farm," explained Morris. "Then my dad passed away in 1977, my mom moved to the original Johnson homestead." Morris has three brothers and two sisters who he also considers as caretakers of the map. E.N. Moyer was the publisher of the map and George Philip was the creator. "I thought because it was a school map, there should be more knowledge about it. The U of A archives in Edmonton can't find a copy of the fifth edition. McMaster University said they have one in seven pieces. There must be more copies out there, but I haven't been able to find one nor have I heard of one," said Morris. The old map is on canvas and is still in very good condition. "It is a little yellow, like it was hung where some sunshine hit it." A small piece has flaked off, but Morris said he has that in a jar at home. His map reveals the various districts throughout the province. "I used the names on the map to compare it with other maps to determine the age of this one. That is how I narrowed it down to the 191214 time frame. My dad told me that the local area was known as the Evergreen District 427." The New Norway resident took the map to Edmonton to compare the changes in time. "When the archives didn't have a copy and didn't know
Morris Fankhanel points out where the Evergreen district was on an Alberta map, believed to be from about 1913.
much about it, I was even more intrigued about its history." He talked to retired University of Alberta librarian Ronald Whistance-Smith to find answers. "I rolled out the map on his kitchen table and then he disappeared," said Morris. "He came back with a stack of books and tried to come up with a date based on what names were on the map." Previously, Morris thought the map was made around 1912, but as they examined the Rocky Mountain House area, Ronald said it had to be later. He suggested 1913. "Then I was at a stalemate for 10 years. I then looked on the internet to restart my research, but haven't found a lot." Morris was told the third edition was printed in 1913, but he says it is more like 1912 because of the changes on his map. "Since the maps were printed in England, it could be a year by the time they arrived here. I've been thinking about the fourth edition. I'm pretty sure it stayed in England (the changes were made rapidly as
Alberta became a bustling place during that time frame). Maybe the maps were lost with the Titanic or maybe in the 1913 Edmonton McKinney building fire. We also had the beginning of a war going on, so that is why I think the fourth edition may not have been printed or that the fifth edition may not have a lot of copies. I can't be the only one interested in this. I hope some other people have some answers for me." Morris has displayed the map for the public on three occasions: the New Norway Homecoming, Duhamel-Camrose County luncheon and at the Meeting Creek Railway Station. "While I was at the train station, I came across a 1913 schedule of the trains and that it went to just north of Drumheller. I checked the places and proposed lines of the railway to compare it with my map. I'm thinking the railway may have been involved with the maps because it had where the railroad went and proposed railways. The owner of the Grand Trunk Railway died on the
Titanic so I often wonder if some maps were lost with him." This year, he wants to display it at Meeting Creek in June and at the Ferintosh Homecoming in July. "Everyone likes to observe the map. Most only spend a few minutes, some just take a glance at as just another map of Alberta. Then there are those who look more closely and the most common search is for the date of the map – where is it, why is there no date." Every district has its own story. The time before David Thompson in 1893, the year Alberta became a province in 1905, the period when the railroad arrived in 1910-11 and now his map from 1912-13. Each time period reflects a different version of an Alberta map. Another key for Morris in determining a dateline was the list of improved districts. "The list is dated as December 18, 1913. The Alberta Gazette doesn't list district 11. That is not on my map either. It was in the bottom left hand corner and is listed as forest reserve. Waterton Park is now listed
as improvement district No. 4. I don't think it was a district for very long. Later, in 1945, number 11 showed up on the east side of the province, which caused a lot of confusion. "The maps are exciting to view as every name presents an area still frozen in time. How quickly we forget that there were many triumphs and failures, each one creating its own frustrating struggle to survive another day. All of our changes have been by man. I am grateful that we have preserved what we have in the end accomplished." Morris has reached a point where he needs some help. "I think that the Mirror Lake Centre would be a good location to display the map in Camrose, as well as the Bill Fowler Centre, to have it shown and maybe jog someone's memory." For more information or if you can provide Morris Fankhanel with some history, contact him at Box 232, New Norway, AB, T0B 3L0, e-mail mofanknl.11@gmail.com or phone 780-855-2269.
County listens to water, health related issues By Murray Green
Camrose County council authorized administration to prepare a local improvement plan for the proposed Ohaton Regional Water Transmission Line Tie-ins and distribute it to all property owners who would potentially benefit. A uniform tax rate will be imposed on each parcel of land for the Ohaton line tieins and the uniform rate will be $5,000 for all 29 properties in the proposed area. The water issues were discussed at the May 14 regular meeting. "When you pay $5,000 for water and another $5,000 for sewer, that is still a very good deal. I paid $23,000 just for water and another $13,000 for sewer 10 years ago,"
said councillor Trevor Miller. "The problem is that not all 29 property owners may want to tie-in." Councillor Brian Austrom said he is not convinced that $5,000 is the right number. Ratepayers would have several years to pay the improvement tax. Councillors agreed that it needs to be stressed to all property owners that this is a one-time deal. Hooking up later may not be allowed or the cost would be far higher. Health clinic

Clinic funding shortfall. The clinic needed to raise $980,000 and has come up with about $600,000 so far. "I'm uncomfortable with this. If we give money here, we will have three more requests in the future," said councillor Trevor Miller. "I don't think we should just sweep the issue under the rug." He made a motion to discuss it during the budget talks. However, the motion was defeated. Council discussed adding it to the 2012 budget deliberations, but finally admitted it should fall to other levels of government. "This should fall under the provincial and federal levels of government and not on us," said councillor Vern Peterson.
"To step into the areas of provincial and federal jurisdictions would be mismanagement," said councillor Doug Lyseng. It was suggested, and passed, to write letters to the Alberta minister of health and MP Kevin Sorenson with copies to local MLA’s regarding the lack of funding provided to health services. Pelican Point
The county will be removing the west portion of the Pelican Point pier and putting it up for sale. Council directed administration to establish angle parking in the overflow camping area by erecting cement stoppers.
