Our community has been the fortunate beneficiary of this creative fundraising endeavour with the club giving generously to the Christmas Cheer Fund, Silent Santa, the Rose City Handi-Van Society, Battle River Animal Protection Society, Centa Cam, The Camrose & District Food Bank breakfast program, and a number of other worthwhile causes. The success of the firewood program has led to the club evaluating the potential funding of new and exciting community initiatives in Camrose.

Council looking to resolve safety issues at daycare

Camrose City council will be meeting with representatives from Gardner Kids Campus Jan. 20 to discuss ways of improving the safety for parents and children who use the day care.

Council is hoping to find a way to move day care parking off the street to lessen the danger of kids running in front of traffic.

“I would really like to have more conversation or have administration up the conversation with Gardner in regards to whether a parking lot in the back that is used for staff parking can be a drop off zone,” said councillor Agnes Hoveland.

Gardner Kids College was required as part of its development permit to provide 17 off-street parking stalls within a distance of 150 metres to allow children to be safely loaded and unloaded from vehicles.

“We have had discussions with them and work is ongoing to meet the requirements of the development permit condition,” said director of engineering Jeremy Enarson.

“My understanding is that there are a couple of locations at which they are looking.”

Mayor Norm Mayer said some of the 17 stalls are behind the Kids Campus day care and the rest are over on 56 Street where Gardner College used to have its residences.

“The problem we have here is that parents are stopping in front of the facility and dropping children off on one side or the other. I have watched it a couple of times and that is what is happening. Especially in this cold weather, you have little toddlers bundled up and going across the street.”

City administration believes that most of the significant safety concerns associated with pedestrian conflicts on 47 Avenue in front of Kids Campus can be eliminated with sufficient off-street parking.

“There is essentially no safe way of loading or unloading the kids on the street when you have the on street parking option,” said Enarson.

Administration is not recommending the implementation of reduced speed limits on 47 Avenue, as it would likely result in similar requests being made from residents in other areas of the city.

“Administration is aware of more than 100 requests for reduced speed limits along many of our roadways in the city, with most of those requests coming from residents that have cited safety concerns as the reason for their requests,” said Enarson.

Councillor Throndson questioned whether it would be possible to force Gardner into compliance with the offstreet parking requirement by banning all parking on the street in front of the day care. The problem with that, said Enarson, is that if vehicles are prevented from parking in one area they will likely move a block further on and create parking problems somewhere else.

“You might end up receiving a lot of complaints saying as a result of you banning parking in front of that facility now I can never park in front of my own place,” said Enarson.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster City of Camrose economic development officer Ray Telford sang a different tune each lap, while joining the Camrose Women’s Shelter Walk A Mile event. About 58 walkers raised $35,000 in the annual event on Jan. 4.

Armena Athletic Association in running for $50,000

Armena Athletic Association is one of five community organizations in the running for a $50,000 prize in UFA’s Rural from the Roots Up Get ‘n’ Give Contest.

The winner will be announced in a special event at Foremost Jan. 15.

UFA’s Rural from the Roots Up Get ‘n’ Give Contest is awarding five prizes of $50,000 – a total of $250,000 – for projects that support and enrich rural communities.

The Hussar and District Hall Maintenance Society was the first winner of $50,000 in October.

Foremost Minor Hockey, Foremost Seniors and the Foremost legacy bridge

committee won $50,000 in October.

“The Village of Foremost demonstrated the difference $50,000 would make to them in a creative and funny poem crafted by local residents,” said Carol Reynolds, of AdFarm public relations. “The community will use the money to assist with the construction of a legacy bridge to commemorate the Forestburg Centennial, to complete renovations to the seniors centre and to finish several civic centre upgrades.”

The Armena Athletic Association would build an addition to the skating shack.

“Our addition would include an indoor washroom, storage room and a

kitchen,” said the Armena Athletic Association application. “Right now our busy rink only has an outhouse beside it. Everyone would be excited to have an indoor washroom, especially parents with young children.

The storage room would be used for a small tractor to clean the ice.”

While it is a small hamlet, the community of Armena is very active.

“Most nights the rink has people skating on it,” said the application. “Up to now, people have used their own equipment to clear the ice. The kitchen would be used for skating parties and winter activities. In the summer it will be used as a concession, for ball, soccer and

community picnics. Hired help as well as volunteers will construct the addition. The skating shack acts as a meeting place for young and old. The skating shack brings people together and keeps our community strong with the relationships that are developed there. Armena has a Dream is a project we have been working on for six years. We have raised $40,000 for our project. The UFA contest would make our dream real. Please consider our request.”

The Rural from the Roots Up Get ‘n’ Give Contest is open to any group that resides within 200 km of a UFA location in Alberta, Saskatchewan and

British Columbia, and has a project that will support or enrich their rural community and have a lasting impact. Application forms, which must be accompanied by a 500 word essay on the project, are available at all UFA Farm and Ranch Supply Stores and petroleum agencies. Projects that are not eligible are for-profit events, day care facilities, medical causes, religious or political projects or company events.

“The quality of the more than 275 applications is incredible to say the least and the bar has been raised by our latest group of entries,” said Bob Nelson, president and chief executive officer, UFA Cooperative Ltd.

Councillor Ray McIsaac said parents need to take more responsibility for the safety of their children and look for safe areas to unload and load their children.

Councillor Hoveland questioned whether it would be possible to put up signage explaining to drivers that there is a day care in the area. Councillor Throndson questioned whether the situation could be improved by having a crosswalk.

Enarson said the City pedestrian policy specifically states that when you start putting up signs where they are not warranted, you can create a sense of security for the pedestrian that it is safe for him or her to step out.

“I have seen it on many occasions, I am sure almost everybody has, where the person is blindly walking, whether they are talking on their cell phone or just engaged in a situation, head down, doing something else, and they come to an intersection and they step out without looking either way. I guess our concern with marking this now with a marked crosswalk is that it will further solidify the thought process within people that ‘I am at a crosswalk’ and give them a false sense of security.”

On Sunday, December 29, our Camrose Ski Club Vikings traveled to Red Deer to take part in a provincial cross-country ski training camp. This camp helped our Vikings to prepare to compete at the 2014 Alberta Winter Games in Canmore this February.

Ten Vikings skiers and biathletes trained alongside some of the best cross country skiers from across central Alberta. Four Vikings coaches – Mark Eggink, Jeff Humphrey, Graeme Thain and myself were involved as camp coaches. Other clubs from across Alberta were impressed with the growing presence of our Camrose club at Alberta events.

Athletes, coaches and parents were fortunate to be coached by two guest coaches at the camp. It is great to have role model student athletes take time to put something back into our sport.

Maja Zimmermann, who just graduated from the University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings crosscountry ski racing program in Camrose, lead our elite group of skiers. Maja was the second place overall champion at the 2013 Canadian Colleges and University Nordic National Championships.

She competed in the 2011 World University Games in Turkey. She is now competing for the Rocky Mountain Racers elite racing team based in Canmore.

Government encourages Albertans to get flu shot

Alberta Health officials are encouraging Albertans to get their annual immunization after a recent spike in the number of flu cases involving the H1N1 strain.

“I ask every Albertan who has not received a flu shot to get one,” said Health Minister Fred Horne in a statement Jan. 3. “Getting immunized protects you, your friends, family, co-workers and everyone you come into contact with.

That includes vulnerable Albertans for whom the flu can mean serious illness or even death.”

Alberta Health has confirmed that 251 Alber-

tans have been hospitalized due to H1N1 influenza, and that five have died after being admitted to ICU. “In some parts of the province, influenza is starting to clog emergency rooms, limit access to hospital beds, and put strain on other health care resources,” said Horne.

On Dec. 31, a ward at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton stopped accepting new patients because of three lab-confirmed flu cases.

Only one in five Albertans (21 per cent) and about half of health care workers (49 per cent) have received the flu shot this season,

rates that Horne feels are too low to adequately protect Albertans, their families and communities. As an additional measure, and to increase protection for patients and health care staff, Horne has directed Alberta Health Services to publish staff immunization rates achieved at individual health facilities.

The Alberta government has been making flu vaccines available free of charge since September, 2009, to all Albertans aged six months and over.

“You cannot get influenza disease from the vaccine because it is made from killed viruses,” states

the Alberta Health Services website. “In Canada, vaccines undergo rigorous testing and licensing procedures with the federal government. Every lot is tested for safety and quality. Side effects are continuously monitored.”

Vaccine protection develops by about two weeks after immunization and lasts less than a year.

Reactions that do occur are usually mild and over within 48 hours.

Influenza immunization has been shown to prevent illness in approximately 70 to 90 per cent of healthy children and adults. Some people who are

immunized might still get influenza, but they usually have milder symptoms and are less likely to have serious medical complications from the disease. Some people may get ill from a strain of influenza that was not covered by the vaccine.

The H1N1 virus caused 71 deaths around the world between the spring of 2009 and August, 2010, and resulted in the World Health Organization declaring a pandemic in June of 2009.

Working group addresses water, sanitation and hygiene challenges

University of Alberta Centre for Sustainable Communities director Lars K. Hallstrom was part of a United Nations Institute on Water, Environment and Health, the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research, McMaster University, and University of Waterloo-hosted working group in Hamilton Nov. 25 and 26 that concluded there is an urgent need to bring together the knowledge and skills of researchers, policy makers and practitioners to address the water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) challenges in all aspects of domestic and international development.

The group noted that, especially in rural, remote and otherwise marginalized communities worldwide, WaSH remains a daily challenge.

“These chronic societal and infrastructure problems are further amplified in emergency situation,” said Dr. Hallstrom. “Canada’s efforts for supplying clean water in parts of the Philippines or in Haiti in 2010 are good examples of emergency WaSH provisions but many long-term needs remain, especially in remote and Aboriginal communities here in Canada.”

The group will start immediately to identify experts who can assist health, education, development, and trade groups to invest in WaSH. “These experts can provide best evidence and practices, and raise awareness that it makes economic sense to promote WaSH at home and abroad,” said Dr. Hallstrom. “Illnesses and deaths related to a lack of WaSH resources have effects that go beyond the individual and family. There are social, policy and economic repercussions that are quite significant.”

The group urged all private, public and civil society sectors to make immediate and serious efforts to consider how to increase access to safe water and improve sanitation, and enhance hygiene practices, whether as part of health care provision or extending Canada’s business opportunities.

It also agreed to share both failures and successes in WaSH in the belief that there is much to be learned from both.

The Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities is a joint initiative of the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus, and the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences which strives to fill the gap for research and policy in rural areas by fostering constructive dialogue, promoting interdisciplinary and collaborative research, and developing partnerships between the University of Alberta and rural communities in Alberta and beyond.

“With booming economic conditions in some communities and long-term decline in others, the social and economic contexts of rural communities are increasingly complex,” states the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Communities website.

“Population aging, dispersed families and changing migration patterns have influenced social connections in rural communities, while technological and environmental change and resource management conflicts affect community vitality. While rural communities face diverse and unprecedented challenges, those challenges have not received the kind of prominent and sophisticated research and policy consideration as have the needs of major cities in recent years.”

Keep watch for counterfeit money

Camrose and area businesses should continue to be on high alert to the circulation of counterfeit currency.

Camrose Police Service crime prevention officer Matthew Wilton produced a Business Watch memo Dec. 18 with the warning that criminals will continue to counterfeit the older series of notes with magnetic stripes until they have been completely removed from circulation.

“The last series of notes is still in circulation because it will take some time before all these notes have rotated through the proper channels that have been designated to remove them,” explained Const. Wilton.

The Bank of Canada started circulating new $5 and $10 polymer notes with state-of-the-art security features in November after previous releases of the $20, $50 and $100.

“The new notes are suspected to be difficult for criminals to reproduce,” said Wilton, who has been supplied with kits detailing all of their features, including the frosted maple leaf window, large windows, and

metallic portrait and building, as well as a CD with additional information, an employee handbook and a plastic sleeve that assists in counterfeit detection. “Like the old ones, each denomination has the same security features.”

The unlawful reproduction of currency in Canada is more prevalent than one might think. In 2012, there were approximately 45,000 counterfeit notes the were passed across Canada, with over 30,000 of those notes being the $20 bill. The best test to use to help determine a note’s authenticity is to compare it to a genuine note and try to spot the differences.

If you are suspicious about money you are handling during a transaction, assess the situation to ensure that you are not at risk. Remember that your customer could be an innocent victim and may not realize that the note he or she has is suspicious. If safe to do so, politely refuse the money and explain that you suspect the note is counterfeit, ask the customer for another note (and check it, too), advise the customer to check the suspicious note with the police, and inform

police of a possible attempt to pass counterfeit money.

If you are suspicious about money in your till after a transaction, give it to police for examination.

Anyone who receives a suspected counterfeit note is required to contact police.

“If the money is deemed counterfeit then police will seize the note so it can be provided to the Bank of Canada to be officially tested,” said Wilton. “It is important for all counterfeit notes to be submitted to the Bank of Canada so that new counterfeit techniques can be determined and trends can be tracked. The Bank of Canada will not reimburse you for any seized counterfeit money so help protect your store by checking all bills during every transaction.”

Camrose Police Service has information kits on the new currency available for pick up at the police station (call the station first at 780-672-4444 so one can be set aside). The kits may also be delivered to your business.

“They are a great resource for businesses to use to educate their employees,” said Wilton.

Donations help Open Door clients have merry Christmas

The Camrose Open Door Association was able to use the donations it received before Christmas to deliver large hampers of food items to 14 clients in Camrose.

“All expressed their gratitude for receiving the items,” said Open Door executive director Randal Nickel in the Camrose Open Door Association’s Dec. 31 newsletter. “Our staff called one to let him know we were coming with a small hamper. When our staff arrived at his door he said, ‘that’s not a small hamper.’”

The Open Door also distributed more than 10 gift bags to young adults in the community, froze more than 40 turkey dinners for distribution to drop in clients and provided 15 tickets for a dinner at the Norsemen Inn on Christmas Day. Camrose Open Door provides housing and support to an average of six youth per night.

“This support can make a lifelong difference,” said Nickel. “Our staff work with each of these youth to support their goals and to connect with support networks. One father stopped me last week to thank the Open Door for helping his daughter turn her life around. Recently one young woman told our housing staff ‘I think you really care about me here.’

They had just celebrated her 18th birthday with a cake they had baked. Those little touches that many of us take for granted can make a huge difference for someone.”

Camrose Open Door has been earning the trust of the community and clients since its first day.

“One young woman turned to her friend and said “You can trust the Open Door with your life,’” states the Open Door website. “Another young man told us that, “The Open Door basically helped me survive my 16th summer.’”

Camrose Kodiaks open second half of season with back to back versus Okotoks

The Camrose Kodiaks opened the 2014 portion of the Alberta Junior Hockey League season with games against the Okotoks Oilers and Brooks Bandits on back-to-back nights in the EnCana Arena on Jan. 3 and 4.

The Kodiaks were six points out of second place in the southern division at

the holiday break after 40 games.

Connor Mailey leads the team in points with 32 and has 12 goals. Tanner MacMaster has 30 points and both Luc Vandale and Nelson Gadoury have 29 points each. Devin McDonald had a 2.42 goals against average, but Matt Zentner wasn’t far behind with a 2.76 average.

Camrose continues

with a home stand on Jan. 10 when the Whitecourt Wolverines stop in for a visit and the Bonnyville Pontiacs play a Sunday 2 p.m. game in Camrose on Jan. 12.

Jeppa Danielson

John Ottis Kvill John Ottis Kvill of New Norway was born on May 30, 1934 at Provost, AB. After a long battle with Alzhiemer’s, he passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, December 15, 2013.

John grew up on the family farm at Metiskow, AB. He received B. of Ed. and B. of Arts degrees from the U of A and taught school for many years.

John loved history and when the opportunity came to work on the Reynolds Alberta Museum project, he quickly changed jobs. He spent his retirement yeras living his dream of building model steam traction engines and maintaining the steam locomotive for Alberta Prairie in Stettler.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Caroline; children Katherine Nelson of New Norway, Melanie (Randy) Simmet of Camrose, Randy (Leigh) Kvill of New Norway and Sonja (Steve) Svihura of Camrose; grandchildren Lorie (Adam) Rea, Rachel and Hilton Simmet, Kesia and Jovan Kvill, Erynn, Nicholas and Kelsie Svihura; brother Reuben (Rose) of Grande Prairie and sisters Priscilla (Gil) Burkart of Wetaskiwin, Grace (Peter) Kulba of Vegreville, Sharon Kvill of Wetaskiwin and Donna (Merval) Skoglund of Camrose; and numerous nieces and nephews, many who thought of him as a grandpa.

John was predeceased by his parents Palmer and Florance Kvill; sister Palma Faith in infancy; and son-in-law Ralph Nelson.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, December 21 with Rev. Jeff Decelle officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Gideons or Alberta Alzheimer Society.

The family would like to thank Pastor Jeff, Bethesda Lutheran Church Women for the wonderful lunch, and New Norway Evangelical Free Church for the use of their facilities. February 18, 1923 – December 27, 2013 Jeppa Danielson of Camrose, AB, went home to glory on December 27, 2013 after succumbing to injuries suffered in a car accident. At the age of 90, Jeppa remained full of life. At the same time, he longed to be with his Savior and his wife, Alma, who predeceased him in 2007. We are comforted to know that Jeppa is rejoicing in his new citizenship in Heaven, experiencing the things that God has prepared for him. 1 Corinthians 2:9 says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard and no one’s heart has imagined all the things that God has prepared for those who love him.”

Jeppa (…a child of the King, a prayer warrior, a proud husband, father and grandfather, a leader, a friend, a carpenter, farmer, builder, inventor, steel worker, electrician, plumber, car restorer, toy maker, traveler, etc. … a dreamer, a schemer and a tease, an independent soul to whom the word “impossible” meant absolutely nothing…) will be missed greatly by his two daughters, Barb (Rick) Campbell of Parksville, BC and Shirley (Harold) Bakker of Whitecourt, AB and his grandchildren Chris, Sarah, Luke, Matthew and Mikayla.

Jeppa will also be missed by a multitude of extended family and friends.

Jeppa was the eighth of 15 children born to Kate and Hans Danielson at Riviere Qui Barre, AB. Jeppa moved to Camrose in 1955 and married Alma Butler of New Norway on June 8, 1960.

They farmed together south of Camrose until 1989 when they moved into Camrose.

Jeppa was known for his talent and creativity, generous spirit and “big hands”! With those hands, he built many things including antique cars, a 720 John Deere tractor and the Mirror Lake Express Train. Many people have been blessed by his abilities.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Century Meadows Baptist Church, Camrose. A time for public visitation will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2014 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Gideon’s Bible Society or to a missionary of your choice.

Holger “Hal” Kiertzner Sorensen November 7, 1927 – January 2, 2014 In loving memory of Hal Sorensen who passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the age of 86 years.

Hal was born on the family farm near Holden, AB and was the oldest of seven children born to Fred and Gerda Sorensen. In 1952, he married Irene Sollid of Bawlf and they raised two children, Laurie and Larry.

Hal began his sales career in the Bawlf Hardware and then worked for Builders’ Hardware in Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Stettler. In 1971, he moved back to Camrose to manage Merit Stores, and later went on to work at Lamb Ford Sales.

The family lost Irene in 1992 and Hal retired the same year. He met Delia in 1995 and they were married on March 9, 1996. They made Innisfail their home.

Throughout his life Hal enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking and spending quality time with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Delia; daughter Laurie (John) Stalenhoef; son Larry and daughter-in-law Kathy; four grandchildren Curtis (Jade), Amber, Derek (Haley), and Dayne (Stacey); three stepsons Jack (Jan) Doherty, Ron (Joanne) Doherty and Bob Doherty; stepdaughter Marie (Joe) Gillis; many step grandchildren; brothers Swen, Arnie (Alice), Harold and Edwin (Karen); sister Elsie (Murray) Sherwin; and brother-in-law Asger Nielsen.

Hal was predeceased by his first wife Irene; his sister Gladys; sister-in-law Fran; and stepdaughter Kathy Doherty.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. A private interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

Loretta attended Heisler School and later remained on the farm dedicating her life caring for her aging parents and invalid sister. Loretta was a farm girl at heart, tending a large garden, enjoying her flowers and farm animals. Her biggest enjoyment was family get-togethers and spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Left to cherish her memory are her brother Leander (Phyllis) of Daysland; sisters Rita Bendfeld of Camrose, Edna Hauser of Camrose; sister-in-law Nora Kroetsch of Heisler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Loretta was predeceased by her brothers John, Edward and Linus; sisters Ann VanSlyke and Irene Kroetsch; brothers-in-law Arnold Bendfeld, Ken Hauser and Clifford VanSlyke; and two nephews Richard and Alan Kroetsch.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014 from St. Martin Roman Catholic Church, Heisler with Rev. Leon Kler as celebrant. Interment followed in St. Martin Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Dolores Marie Meyer

Katie Matilda Blades (nee Luz) April 19, 1935 – January 1, 2014 Katie was born on the family farm southeast of Camrose on April 19, 1935 to Karl and Alma Luz. She was the third youngest of 12 children and was baptized into the Holy Christian Faith on March 10, 1937 at Grace Lutheran Church in Camrose.

She attended Daresbury Country School to grade 9, and grade 10 at Camrose High School. She completed high school by correspondence while she cared for her two younger sisters after the death of their mother.

Katie met the love of her life, Jack Blades, and in 1956 they were married at Grace Lutheran Church. It was in Camrose that they raised five children, Chris, Larry, Gary, Don and Lori. In 2009, after 53 years of marriage, Jack left to go to his heavenly home. Katie joined him the morning of January 1, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital.

May 28, 1943 – December 28, 2013 Dolores Marie Meyer was born to Josephine and Arthur Steil on May 28, 1943 in Galahad, AB. Dolores lived on her parents’ family farm and attended Round Head Creek School. She married Alvin Meyer on April 23, 1966. They purchased the family farm the next year and continued the mixed farming operation.Dolores developed a dedication for her greenhouse. This evolved into a business, which she was very dedicated to until her passing.

Her passion in life was enjoying the outdoors which included her hobbies such as gardening, camping, fishing, traveling and spending time with her family and friends, especially during the Christmas season.

Dolores is survived by her loving husband Alvin; her two sons Dennis (Sharon) and Dale (Veronica); three grandchildren Kyle, Shelby and Sadie; and her sister Diane Prescott (Arthur) of Winnipeg.

She was predeceased by her sister Sandra; her parents Josephine and Arthur; and stepmother Nadia (Condon).

Donald Mitchell Joseph Scabar Donald Mitchell Joseph Scabar of Camrose passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the age of 68 years.

Don was a longtime resident of Camrose where he owned and operated Pro-Lawn for many years. He was very well known in his community and admired by many.

He loved machining and fabricating scale engines in his spare time and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Left to cherish his memory are his three sons Rod (Michelle) of Calgary, Barry of Calgary and David (Leslie) also of Calgary.

Don is also survived by his six grandchildren Portia, Talia, Acacia, Michael, Sullivan and Dawson; his brother Arnold (Carol); and his two sisters Avis (Cecil) Huffman and Mary Lou Prusak. Don was predeceased by his parents Louis and Mary; two sisters Edith and Lorraine; and one granddaughter, Jorjia.

Camrose Chamber of Commerce members received a guided tour of the Chamber website at a recent meeting.

Chamber vice-president Tanya Fox said the website was updated because a lot of the members were unhappy with it.

The home page features a button near the top that allows members to log-in with their user name and password.

“If you are not sure or this is the first time hearing about it, you can call the Chamber at any time and they will be able to give you that information,” said Fox. Further down, the page has information about all the upcoming events in Camrose, links to the City of Camrose, City Center Camrose, Camrose County, and Alberta Chambers of Commerce, and information Chamber group insurance program.

“If you currently have insurance that maybe you are not happy with or you are a new business and are looking at potentially getting benefits, this is where you can go to have a representative come see you,” said Fox. “The rates are very competitive to Blue Cross, which a lot of people are using.”

A “Chamber” tab provides information about the executive, directors and tab and Chamber history, as well as a messages from the executive director and the president.

Information about the Chamber Member2Member program can be found under the membership tab.

“The membership committee is working very hard to revive this program,” said Fox. Each business has the opportunity to offer other Chamber members a special discount. So, as an example, Custom ‘n Classics. If you shop there and you are a Chamber member you can receive ten per cent off your

purchases. At Fox TaekwonDo you can receive 10 per cent off your monthly fees. Each business gets to choose what they want, and can make changes as many times as they want. It is a great tool to get new people into your business as well as do some extra promotion on the website.”

The community info tab provides information to members on facility rentals and retail and industrial spaces.

“We heard from a lot of people that it can be difficult to find lease space in Camrose when you are looking to move if you are not walking around and just seeing the signs,” said Fox. “This will be able to link you to all the available lease spaces, as well as their land auctions. It really is an area that is one stop shopping if you are looking at moving or starting new.”

The advocacy tab has a link to the Camrose Chamber of Commerce recommendation (accepted at both the Alberta Chambers AGM and Canadian Chambers of Commerce AGM) that the Government of Canada incorporate flexibilities into Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) systems to allow frontline CRA staff to manage communications between CRA streams on behalf of small business owners, and take initiative to resolve small issues in a timely fashion, maintaining with proper technical supervision a client-oriented, customerservice approach. The tab also has a link to a Camrose Chamber recommendation, accepted at the Alberta Chambers AGM, that the Government of Alberta create an education program aimed at protecting employers and employees from all forms of workplace harassment and bullying that threaten the physical or psychological wellbeing of any employee including unreasonable behaviour in the work environment that generally is persistent, and

that demeans, intimidates and humiliates employees, either as individuals or as a group.

The directory listings tab provides information about all Chamber members.

“The reason why this one was started was that a lot of our members wanted to have their information updated and we have a lot of home based businesses in Camrose that don’t necessarily have enough information to have their own website,” explained Fox. “What we were able to do was sort of create mini websites for all our businesses.

We also have a search directory so if you type in a key word, something that a business sells for example, it will bring up all the listings.”

The directory also includes Google maps that show where the businesses are located.

A premium membership plan gives Chamber members considerably more exposure, allowing them to provide more information about their business and upload files, pdfs and photos.

“If you have any videos or commercials you want your clients to be able to see you can put it up with a premium membership,” said Fox. “It is something that is really beneficial, especially if you don’t have enough content for a full website. It (the membership) also ups your rating on all of the search engines.”

All premium members show up in a scrolling list on the Camrose Chamber of Commerce home page.

Camrose Chamber of Commerce memberships are due in the month of January.

2014 Buick LaCrosse Refined look, enhanced safety

As driving conditions continue to be more perilous for motorists, car shoppers become increasingly aware of the need for a vehicle that has been well-rated to withstand the event of a crash.

While nobody ever wants to be involved in an accident, the reality of that possibility during times of decreased traction and visibility often puts buyers on the alert when it comes to safety ratings.

The 2014 Buick LaCrosse at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC has received the highest possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety as part of the Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

“Safety is one of the pillars of the Buick brand and our flagship continues to echo this essential element to our customers,” said Jeff Yanssens, chief engineer of the LaCrosse. “Not only do we offer advanced safety technologies in the 2014 LaCrosse but we designed and engineered the core of the car to perform well with respect to crash safety.”

LaCrosse offers one of the most comprehensive

collections of standard and available safety features in the segment.

A highly-intelligent allwheel-drive system helps maintain traction and avoid wheel spin. Combined with an electronic limited-slip differential, AWD helps maintain traction by sending power to the wheel with the most grip. In low traction situations, it can send up to 50 per cent of engine torque to either front wheel and up to 85 per cent to either rear wheel.

A safety alert seat provided seat vibration pules, indicating the direction of a potential crash threat.

Automatic collision preparation uses radar technology to detect a possible crash threat and alerts the driver.

If the system detects that the driver does not apply the brakes, this feature intervenes to automatically trigger the brakes in an effort to reduce crash damage.

Full-speed-range adaptive cruise control senses traffic in front of the LaCrosse to adjust vehicle speed, including bringing the vehicle to a complete stop and accelerating again upon driver request. Lane

departured warning uses a camera-based detection system to warn the driver of unsignalled lane changes.

The camera, mounted near the inside rearview mirror, identifies lane markings and provides alerts.

Lane change alert helps to inform the driver of fastapproaching vehicles in the next lane that are up to 70 metres behind the car.

Rear cross traffic alert can warn the driver of vehicles in traffic when backing out of a parking spot, including angled parking, with visual, audible or vibration alerts. A rear vision camera provides a view of the area behind the LaCrosse, shown on the display in the centre stack infotainment system.

Refined look

With dramatic re-shaping of the front and rear, Buick LaCrosse has a more refined look. It is an important and heartbreaking issue that merits public discussion and debate, which is why I welcome this report. The stories are a reminder that we need to do everything we can to protect Alberta’s children.

all serious injuries and deaths of children receiving services (whether they are in the province’s care or not) and can access all government information relating to the child in question.

We also established the Child and Family Services Council for Quality Assurance. The Council is made up of experts and advocates who are appointed by government but who work independently with Human Services to

identify effective practices and make recommendations to the Minister for improving and strengthening child intervention services.

In 2012, our government began reporting all deaths of children in care, regardless of their cause. This information is available in the Human Services Annual Report as well as the Child and Youth Advocate’s Annual Report.

In addition, every time a child in the care or custody

of Human Services dies, no matter the cause, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducts an investigation.

We know when it comes to protecting our children, we can always do better.

One death of a child in care is too many. We have been working hard to protect all of Alberta’s children, and we’re going to keep moving forward. That’s why I committed to publicly

tracking and reporting our progress toward meeting all recommendations that relate to children in care, whether they’re from the Child and Family Services Council for Quality Assurance, the Child Advocate or the Chief Medical Examiner It’s also why I have invited our opposition colleagues to join me in a ministerial roundtable to discuss critical questions raised about the

death of children in care in hopes of tabling a joint report in the legislature for debate.

I want Albertans to know how we’re doing and to have confidence that their child welfare system is protecting and nurturing Alberta’s most vulnerable children.

There is always more to do. And we’re going to keep making our system better for Alberta’s children, together.

By Murray Green Fourth year University of Alberta, Augustana Campus student Lee Danderfer has emerged as the leader of the Vikings’ men’s basketball team this season. But, it didn’t come without hard work.

“I grew up in Camrose in my early years (before his family moved to Grande Prairie) and I thought it would be cool to go to Augustana and play for the Vikings,” Lee said, as he reflected on his decision to return to the city in which he was born. “I came with a friend, who is now at Grant MacEwan, to an ID (identification) camp and we were both offered a spot, so we accepted.”

After 11 games this year, Danderfer was the top Viking and was third in the league with 198 points.

“Everyone told me that the first year is the hardest, and they weren’t kidding,” chuckled Lee. “In my first year I did a lot of sitting, watching and learning about the game. After the first year, coach came to me and said I am on the cusp of getting chopped off the roster. If I didn’t get it together, I might get cut. I really used that as motivation to improve and be better. I hit the weight room and became stronger and I actually made the starting team in my second year.”

The jump from high school to university is a big one.

“Everyone is a few inches taller and a little stronger. The game is a whole lot faster and you have to learn to adjust,” said Lee. “Especially for me, because I’m playing shooting guard and I’m only 5’10” or 5’11”.

I have to play against guys who are 10 to 15 pounds heavier than I am. You add that to the fact that the game is so much faster; it takes hard work to overcome the challenge. It takes a year to adjust to the pace.”

Lee has always set high expectations for himself.

“Right now I’m concerned about our team getting the wins and not any personal numbers. I want to be in the playoffs and challenge other teams for the championship,” he added. “I want the team to do well. I have confidence and I have a little cocky attitude that I can do what I want out there, but the team comes first.”

Lee’s role is to provide some offence.

“Our team doesn’t have a ton of scorers, so I am called upon to score points.

I’ve always been a shooter.

I’m on the scouting reports from other teams and they want to shut me down. I still need to get our team points, so it is a little pressure, but I like the challenge.”

The Vikings had a rough first half of the season where they lost a couple of games they should have won.

“If there ever was an opportunity for us, it is right now,” explained Lee. “We have seven straight home games to start the semester and the first four are against south teams.

They are two point games, so that is a possible eight points right off the bat. If we get those eight points, it puts us right in the run for the top five teams.”

The Vikings are in a position to control its own destiny.

“We want to become that run and gun, scrappy team. It doesn’t matter what the other team throws at us, we want to play our game,” added Lee. “We have our identity and we have to get back to that.

At our first practice back everyone seemed eager to get back at it and focus on what we need to do.”

Lee circled the Jan. 24 and 25 dates on his calendar because Grande Prairie is in Camrose.

“Josh Nichol (his teammate in high school) and I are looking forward to playing them since are from there. Josh’s dad coaches Grande Prairie, so it will be interesting.”

The top two leading scorers on the Vikings, Danderfer and Taylor Foreman, as well as Nichol, all plan to be back with the Vikings for a fifth year next season. Nichol played for three years in Grande Prairie before transferring to Augustana.

“We want to go as far as we can this year and gain some experience. With the three of us coming back for another year, it will be time for us to go for it all,” he said. “But, we have to take care of business this year first.”

Augustana is home on Jan. 10 against Lethbridge to start the second half of the season. The games begin at 6 and 8 p.m. St. Mary’s is here for games at 1 and 3 p.m. on Jan. 11.

The Vikings continue the home stand with Briercrest on Jan. 17, Medicine Hat on Jan. 18, two Grande Prairie games and then against Lakeland on Feb. 7.

Simple ways to alter dietary habits When it comes to physical health, many people are aware that making exercise a part of the daily routine is a good means to getting healthier. However, exercise is only one part of the process. Combining exercise with a healthy diet is the best way to achieve optimal physical health. But a healthy diet doesn’t have to mean a full dietary overhaul.

Rather, there are ways to alter dietary habits without having to sacrifice favorite foods.

Pan-fry or saute foods with a nonstick spray or low-calorie butter substitute. Bake or broil instead of frying. Replace sugar with

substitutes when sweetening foods and beverages.

Order from the light menus now offered at many restaurants, or purchase low-calorie or reduced-fat products at the grocery store.

Try a meal plan using “exchange lists” based on foods grouped together according to similar food values. Most exchange lists include several “free” foods: those lower than 20 calories per serving, such as many low-calorie, sugar-free foods and beverages.

Never skip meals. Eat three to six times a day in smaller portions to keep from getting hungry. Practice patience when eating.

You can also save and invest up to $5,500 per year in a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). You can take the money out whenever you desire, no tax is paid on that withdrawal, and whatever growth occurs within the account does so tax-free.

That means the TFSA can be a great supplement to your RRSP. The Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) allows you to save and benefit from tax-deferred growth until the accumulated amount is used for financing your children’s education.

Although you are not able to deduct your contributions from your income, the money you contribute can generate additional funds through the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), a program that adds government-sponsored contributions to your RESP. 3. Build an emergency fund – You should have some easily accessible cash kept aside specifically for emergencies. If something unforeseen happens, you want enough in your emergency fund to avoid relying on your credit cards for the necessities of life. And it’s just as important that you not tap into your retirement savings, or you could put your retirement plans in jeopardy. So you might find it’s a prudent goal in 2014 to get the equivalent of three to six months’ worth of living expenses into an emergency fund.

4. Cut your debts – It sounds simple, but it’s difficult to achieve. Remember that every dollar that doesn’t go toward a debt payment can be applied toward your retirement savings. So in 2014, you might want to commit to borrowing only when necessary, shopping around for competitive rates, paying off credit card balances every month, consolidating your investing or banking in one place, and generally looking for ways to cut whatever costs you can while living within your means.

Here’s one other commitment that might be the most valuable of all: If you don’t already have a financial advisor, make 2014 the year you get one. A qualified financial advisor can objectively evaluate your situation, suggest appropriate financial strategies for helping you achieve your longterm objectives, and maybe even help you stick to your financial New Year’s resolution.

Vikings host high school basketball tournament

By Murray Green The fourth annual Augustana Vikings high school basketball tournament was held from Jan. 2 to 4.

The highly successful tournament gives high school athletes the chance to participate in challenging games and a skill development camp, as well as watch university level basketball players in action.

“We’re happy to have four eager schools and the opportunity to work with them in our traditional tournament clinic each morning,” said Dave Drabiuk, Vikings men’s basketball coach.

The tournament was first designed to be held between Christmas and New Year, but the dates were changed for a variety of reasons.

“The students and coaches, both for high school and university, found it to be better for the programs if it was held after the holiday season,” explained Dave. “It is also better for Augustana to have the event when the university is fully open. Classes start on the Monday following the tournament, so we can bring our players back to help with the coaching instruction.

It also allows teams to have more of a holiday break.”

The successful format of combining games with skill development is a hit with the high school coaches and players.

“Augustana helped with coaching and helped run the tournament. It is good

This gave them the opportunity to learn those skills, as well as be able to give

something back,” said coach Dave. “It allowed Augustana coaches to give back without an ulterior motive. It is a chance for coaches and players to give back to the game that has given them so many opportunities.”

The player skill clinics helped the athletes prepare for the stretch run of the season. It is really popular with the high school coaches because it is a good time for development for the players.

Basketball skill clinics were held in the morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and the games started at 2 and 4 p.m.

Arch Bishop Jordan of Sherwood Park, Team Yukon, Westlock’s R.F. Staples and the Camrose Composite High School Trojans participated in three games in addition to the skills camp at Augustana.

“We are really happy to have CCHS in the tournament to give us that Camrose connection. Coach James Saby has been a big supporter of the tournament. We also like the way it expands to the next area like Sherwood Park. Team Yukon and Westlock also returned this year,” Dave said.

The tournament featured regular officials to give the players games they can build on as the season continues.

Augustana will be holding a spring all-star basketball series for girls and boys high school players in March.

Trojans use hoop camp to prepare for season

The Camrose Composite High School Trojans basketball team entered the fourth annual Vikings Invitational Basketball Tournament on Jan. 2 to 4 because they wanted to focus on two goals.

“This camp and tournament is good for us to get back into a rhythm and get the rust off,” said Jesse Kerr, captain of the Trojans. “The skill camp is good for us to learn more in all aspects of the game. The tournament is good for us to get back into the competitive mood.”

The Vikings showed they are serious about the sport they love.

“The Augustana players are all about basketball and we can learn from them,” said the Grade 12 CCHS student.

“They are determined to win and it is good to be around that atmosphere. It shows us what it takes to be a team.

You can tell they are close to each other and they know what it takes.”

CCHS only played one league game prior to the break.

“We lost to Notre Dame (Red Deer), but they are a good team. We only have two

returning players from last year, so we are a rebuilding team,” added Jesse. “This year we are looking for a lot of improving and learning.”

“I’m usually a quiet kind of a guy. But, I’m working on being more vocal and being a leader. I like the challenge

because it is important to learn leadership skills, not only for basketball, but for life skills as well.”

“All of the teams here are pretty good and even, so it pushed us to be better,” said Jesse. “There is always room for improvement.”

“It pushed us to improve, but at the same time all four teams worked together to improve as well. I would like to play basketball after high school, so I wanted to learn as much as I could from the university players.”

The tournament offered challenging games in a skill development camp and the high school athletes watched university level basketball players in action.

“We want to be competitive with any team in our league by the time zone play comes along,” Jesse said.

Both Ponoka and Wetaskiwin are expected to have good teams in the league, so CCHS will see plenty of competitive basketball this season.

Set real goals for this year It’s one thing to make New Year’s resolutions, but it’s an entirely different thing to follow through with them.

Breaking resolutions is almost as much a time-honored tradition as dreaming up what you hope to accomplish in the new year.

However, there are ways to hedge the odds in favor of keeping resolutions. Just follow these pointers: Set realistic goals: Realistic goals with firm deadlines are much easier to achieve than open-ended goals that are too lofty. If you want to lose weight, for example, aim for weekly goals that are manageable, such as a pound or two a week, instead of saying you want to lose 30 pounds in total. This way you can see success at regular intervals and keep up with the goal.

Make a plan: Once you come up with resolution goals, figure out the way to achieve them. If you resolve to quit smoking, maybe the plan involves visiting the doctor for a nicotine-replacement prescription, or finding a friend who will quit with you and provide moral support. Having a clear plan will enable you to work more readily toward the goal.

Minor hockey players receive good advice

Former Camrose Minor Hockey players shared their knowledge of the game after they left midgets.

The Camrose and District Athletic Club hosted its first Hot Stove event to highlight some of the local players that have gone on to pursue high level hockey options on Dec. 22.

Adam Johnson of the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings, Ryan Huolt of the Camrose Kodiaks, Courtney Vinet of Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh (NCAA) and Justin Kirkland of the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League talked with current minor hockey players and parents about the sport beyond the midget level.

“I sacrificed friendships when I moved to Fort McMurray to play junior hockey. I wouldn’t change it though because I have good friends there and here as well,” said Adam.

“You have to give up weekends with friends partying and focus totally on hockey and education,” added Ryan. “You lose your fun time, but it is definitely worth it.”

While hockey is important, education is the key.

“It’s tough, I’m not going to lie. I’m there to play hockey, but also get an education,” said Courtney. “It is important to make use of your time wisely. We miss a lot of school because of hockey, but the teachers are understanding.

You don’t want to fall behind though.”

Playing in a positive environment is key.

“Everyone wants to win and that is the goal for every season and you want to win a championship,” said Ryan.

“The other part of it is that you want to get an education through hockey.”

“Our goal is to win a championship again. I might try playing hockey in Europe, but my goals are shifting from hockey to education. I want to think about what is important in life, but at the same time play hockey for as long as I can,” he added.

“I want our team to win the league, but I also want to be seen for the upcoming draft,” said Justin.

“I too want to win a championship, but I want to finish my masters in business,” said Courtney. “After I graduate I still want to play hockey, but my focus will be on a career.”

Self motivation is a requirement to reach a higher level in hockey.

“You have to push yourself to get better. Don’t get caught up in rankings. You are the one that has to work hard to improve,” offered Justin.

Spike it

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Local volleyball teams entered the Spike It For Survivors and Rally To Remember tournament to help fight cancer.

The 11 teams raised $1,250 at CCHS and at Geo’s Sports Lounge.

“I agree with Justin.

You have to push yourself both on and off the ice. It is important to have a good attitude. Things may not always go your way, so stay positive and keep working hard,” said Courtney. “You have to be physically fit. I went into my freshman year thinking I was in pretty good shape.

It was a rude awakening and I learned from that. You have to be in top shape before camp starts.”

Moving away from home at an early age is a major adjustment.

“Living away from home in someone else’s basement is tough. I’m fortunate to have really good billets, who cook for me. I talk to my parents everyday, so it’s not too bad,” said Justin about life in Kelowna.

Adam played away first and returned home to suit up for the Vikings.

“Augustana wasn’t my first choice, but it was a good

choice,” he said. “I would have liked to play in the NCAA, but it just didn’t happen for me. To play in division three would have been really costly.

It made more sense for my family to play at Augustana and we won a championship in my first year, so it worked out.”

Ryan stayed close to home to play for the Kodiaks.

“It’s great to play in Camrose in front of your family and friends. It’s good to have local support. The disadvantage is you don’t get to experience living with billets.”

The event was held to give bantam and midget players an understanding of playing hockey at the next level.

“Each team has a different system and you have to keep an open mind. You want to be coachable and do what is asked of you. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask,” advised Justin.

“In midget I was called

upon to get points and on the Kodiaks I was asked to be the grinder, physical guy. You have to make adjustments and do what is best for the team,” added Ryan.

Finding the right team for you to play on is a personal choice.

“For me the WHL was the right fit. I’m happy with my coaches and my choice. I’ll see where it takes me,” said Justin.

Adam advised the minor hockey players to be humble and always be a good person.

“Always work hard, unless you’re Sydney Crosby, someone is always going to be better than you. Be a good person, work hard and hockey will have a place for you.”

Both Adam and Ryan said to focus more on hockey, fitness and nutrition at a younger age. Justin and Courtney advised to always be positive.

Portage provides the opposition in a game that was postponed due to bad weather last year. Action in the EnCana Arena begins at 7:30 p.m.

Scott Aucion leads the Vikings in scoring with eight goals and 11 assists in 17 games. Adam Johnson follows with 10 goals and seven assists. Matthew Foster, Dane Bonish and Kenny Bradley are also in the top 20 in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference scoring race.

Joel Danyluk is second in goals against with a 1.93 average. Andy Williams is

seventh with a 2.40 average.

Augustana travels to Briercrest for two games to officially start the second half of the season on Jan. 10 and 11. The next home game is on Jan. 17 against SAIT starting at 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball Keri Alcorn leads the women’s squad with 120 kills, while Kiera Lotoski has the most blocks with 32.

On the men’s side, Luke Ryan leads the team with 65 kills, while Jordan Gardiner has 23 blocks.

Augustana is away on Jan. 10 and home on Jan. 11 against SAIT to start the second half. The games begin at 6 for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.

Basketball The Augustana Vikings

men’s basketball team held a high school boy’s basketball tournament Jan. 2 to 5. The Vikings provided instruction in the morning as well as games in the afternoon. Augustana played an exhibition game against NAIT to wrap up the tournament.

Kelsey Lund leads Augustana and is fourth in the league with 168 points in 11 games. Lee Danderfer is the top Viking and third in the league with 198 points.

Augustana is home on Jan. 10 against Lethbridge to start the second half of the season. The games begin at 6 and 8 p.m. St. Mary’s is here for games at 1 and 3 p.m. on Jan. 11.
