City looking at bringing back Snowbirds By Dan Jensen
The Canadian Forces Snowbirds could be returning to Camrose this summer. Camrose Flying Club representative Jadene Mah told Camrose City council last week that the club received an email from the Snowbirds at the end of January indicating a willingness to start talking about some firm dates for a Camrose appearance (around the time of Big Valley Jamboree in August). “They typically try to make their schedule a couple of years in advance, but due to some personnel changes with both One Canadian Air Division and the Department of National Defence they have been hesitant to complete their official schedule until they have had some discussions just surrounding their budget,” said Mah. “As far as we know we have been on their calendar for some time, but the way the process works is that they tell us to stand by and stand by until we finally get an email saying that you can pursue hosting us, along with the necessary checklists.” Camrose Flying Club is requesting that the City of Camrose pay $12,000 of the $74,000 estimated total cost of hosting the Snowbirds, as well as provide an assortment of in-kind services. “It (the cash investment) is essential because the Flying Club is a non-profit organization and the event is as much about hosting the Snowbirds as it is about
taking advantage of having an on-the-ground event in our community,” explained Mah. “We had an aviation fair component to the event the last time the team was in town.” In-kind services would involve the fire and police departments, as well as Camrose Public Works. “The fire department needs to be on standby for a portion of the snowbirds’ flying activities, and there is a small amount of traffic control required by the police department,” said Mah. The services of Camrose Public Works would be required to assist with the cost of sweeping the runway and the taxiways at the Camrose Airport before the arrival of the jets. Councillor Agnes Hoveland questioned where the City would get the money to host the performance. “We just finalized a budget,” said Hoveland, “and now we are being asked for an addition of $12,000.” Hoveland also asked whether the City has a policy that limits the number of add-ons to the budget in a single year. City manager Damian Herle said past contributions from the City for Snowbirds performances have come from the community assistance grant fund. “I don’t know the exact amount that council authorized in that grant fund,” said Herle, “but that would be a potential source of funding.” Continued on page 7

Residents ask council to address shortcutting problem By Dan Jensen
Residents in the West Grandview area are asking that the City of Camrose take action to reduce the amount of traffic in their neighbourhood. Forty-ninth Avenue Traffic Committee members Cliff Hoyme, Gary Gibeault, Dean Rostad and Geoff Fairless told City council in a written and verbal presentation Feb. 18 that they are concerned about the ever increasing “shortcutting” traffic volumes on 49 Avenue. “The traffic volumes on 49 Avenue between Grand Drive and 64 Street have increased significantly in excess of 1,600 vehicles per day,” said the committee. “Traffic volumes on both 49 Avenue and 50 Avenue between 64 Street and 66 Street have also grown to nearly 1,000 vehicles per day on both sections of road, i.e., virtually at the recognized maximum level. Traffic on
all of these road sections will continue to grow as west Camrose grows, and the status quo of the shortcutting traffic is allowed to persist.” The solution as the committee sees it is to prevent through traffic by building of cul-de-sacs on 49 Avenue and 50 Avenue immediately west of 64 Street, and on 64 Street at 50 Avenue, as well as to restrict through traffic on the lane west of 64 Street and south of 49 Avenue, with traffic turn areas and a gate for maintenance vehicles. “This option is eminently effective at reducing the shortcutting, through traffic component,” said the committee. “It is a permanent solution to an egregious traffic problem and shares the pain almost equally among the parties now suffering with the problem.” Hoyme, who has lived in the West Grandview area since 1996, told council that the area has changed consid-
erably since he and his wife, Dorothy, purchased their home there in 1996. “One of our main concerns (when buying the home) was traffic, which at that time was quiet and comparable to other residential areas – probably quieter than most,” said Hoyme. “It was so quiet, in fact, that we were reported to the police as a car loitering in the area. This morning, as I backed onto the street, I found myself backing onto a street that now carries in excess of 1,600 vehicles a day.” Hoyme noted that narrow residential streets such as the one on which he lives are not intended for heavy traffic. “Our street is no longer quiet and safe, and actually dangerous for residential living. This is not the kind of retirement home we bought into a few years ago.” Gibeault noted that the West Grandview subdivision, was developed over a 38 year period from 1952 to 1990 –
prior to the commercial and multi-family development between 66 and 68 Street. “The result of these major residential and commercial developments was a huge gain for the city in terms of employment and assessment, but came with an increase in traffic flows on the arterial roadways and through the West Grandview neighbourhood,” said Gibeault, adding that the subdivision has arterial roads surrounding it on three separate sides and that all residential lots are within 250 metres of an arterial road. The committee explained that the 1,600 plus vehicles per day on 49 Avenue between Grand Drive between 64 Street is 60 per cent in excess of the nationally, provincially and municipally recognized maximum. It also noted that the traffic on both 49 and 50 Avenues between 64 and 66 Streets has grown substantially since 2005 and is now
virtually at and above the maximum acceptable level for a local residential street. Fairless told council that preventing through traffic with the use of cul-de-sacs would mean that the residents of the area would have to take different routes to get to where they need to go. “The harm as we call it means that some people are going to have to drive further,” said Fairless. “Instead of going through the neighbourhood they will drive on the arterial road system. If I lived on the east end of the block and I wanted to go west I would first have to go to Grand Drive, then onto 48 Avenue (west) and then back into the area on 66 Street. Similarly, if I lived on the west side (of the subdivision) and wanted to go east, I would have to go to 66 Street, down 48 Avenue (east) and then continue on 48 Avenue or use Grand Drive.” Continued on page 11

Along with seeking the support of the City, the Camrose Flying Club plans to make application to the provincial government for $50,000 in CIP (Community Initiatives Program) funding, Camrose County for $500, Panhandle Productions for $905.31. The proposed contribution from corporate sponsors stands at $5,000. Council asked that City administration take a look at the proposal and make a recommendation on potential sources of funding by March 3 so that the Camrose Flying Club has enough time to make an application to the CIP program in the next quarter. “I would like to refer

this to administration to fill in some of the blanks,” said Mayor Norm Mayer. Councillor Wayne Throndson said it is a compliment to the City that the Canadian Forces would want to return to Camrose for the fourth time in the last eight years. “It is quite unusual for the Snowbirds to return to the same community this many times.” Mah said the Camrose Flying Club has made a name for itself with the Snowbirds for the type of welcome it provides. “Camrose provides the best hospitality. They (the Snowbirds) are aware of that and we are very proud of it. The Snowbirds have been required to cut a number of
their flying hours this year and while the majority of those hours have been in the United States they have been cutting the hours in Canada as well. The fact that we are still on their calendar is really good.” Camrose Flying Club president Barry Graham told council in a Feb. 13 letter that the visit by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds is a confident regional tourism initiative and economic development advantage for the City, region and community agencies. “The Snowbirds are a high profile example of the finest in professionalism, dedication and teamwork,” said Graham. “The team continues to inspire youth to work towards responsible futures via education.”

Everything is Awesome!
NINETY-NINE YEARS YOUNG
Photo by Rod Sitler Martha Sitler of rural Camrose celebrated her 99th birthday on Feb. 15. She enjoys excellent health, still lives in her own home, and is very active for her age. Every morning she jumps on her treadmill and goes for a three quarters of a kilometer walk. Last fall she dug the potatoes by herself. She is an inspiration to everyone who knows her. She is wearing an Oilers jersey she received for her birthday. She may set a record that Wayne Gretzky may find difficult to break.

The Lego Movie was number one at the box office this weekend and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews across the board. I went to see the film with my daughter and her friend and it was, in their words, “Awesome!” Greatly enjoyed by parents and children, the movie, at the most literal level, presents an argument for creativity and (literally) thinking outside the box. I love watching films in movie theatres filled with children because kids haven’t yet learned to filter their responses to what they are seeing on the screen. Whether it is the announcement that “I totally didn’t expect that to happen,” the cheers when the Millennium Falcon and Han Solo appear, kids jumping out of their seats in excitement, or all the kids singing along with the theme song, movie going with a young audience is a very different and enjoyable experience. At the same time, even when at a children’s movie, I can’t quite seem to remove my ‘political scientist’ hat. The Lego Movie, I have to admit, while enjoyable, left me a bit confused as to what the point really was because of the various inconsistencies in the political and social messages in the film. Warning: spoilers may follow. The theme song to the movie (which I have heard over and over after my daughter downloaded it from iTunes), features the refrain “Everything is awesome/ Everything is cool when you are part of a team/ Everything is awesome, when you’re living our dream.” The song clearly advocates teamwork and a positive attitude. Towards the end

of the film, the construction worker protagonist Emmet points out the reason that the master builders have failed is because they have not been working as a team. Yet, what actually happens is that Emmet saves the day largely by himself and the ‘Man’ is thwarted by the individual actions and creativity of individual Lego characters all doing their own thing. The call to creativity and thinking outside the Lego box are a bit ironic. After all, Lego is the company that mainly packages its pieces in kits with detailed instructions designed to make a specific creation that is often tied to a popular film series. This is a move away from the simple generic multi-piece kits that I remember from my childhood. In fact, today the creation of the most recent detailed Millennium Falcon requires precision, attention to detail, and over a thousand of individual and highly specific pieces and, most importantly, the ability to closely follow directions
— one of the social norms that the films purports to resist. After all, Emmet is so normal and unmemorable precisely because he always follows the rules. In the end, this blind acquiescence to rules is used as a foil to disguise revolutionary action. This brings us to the ‘Man’: Lord/President Business. Is Lego really trying to convince us that they represent a challenge to big business? This Danish family owned company makes profits in the range of three-quarters of a billion US dollars every year and has a net worth of almost $15 billion. Since the plastic brick’s introduction in 1963, they’ve established an Internet presence, launched video games, board games, books & magazines, helped develop six Lego theme parks and ten “discovery centers”, operate almost a 100 stores on three continents, license children’s clothing, and now venture into film and television. Lego is big business — perhaps even a big business aimed to corralling children’s creativity through instruction driven play – and this film is a giant commercial for their products. Now before you protest, let me say that I liked the movie and I love Lego. But, I also think that movies educate children about the ways in which the world and human relationships work, although different children will take away different messages. Some children will take the movie at face value, while others may interact with it differently, sort of like playing with Lego. However, even with this is mind, The Lego Movie provides a very confused manual for life.

Melanchcon of Augustana in “Second Thought” (Feb. 4) makes some questionable claims about the Camrose area. He states the community of Sparling was renamed Camrose “to avoid
confusion with other cities.” Although it was not a city until many decades after it was renamed. Then he claims: “And so today our friends and relatives think it must be beautiful to live in Canmore.” Maybe his friends and relatives can’t tell the difference between Camrose and Canmore; I’m sure mine can. (“More” can seem to be more; I like thee ‘Rose! Do they can more in Canmore?) He speaks of “the fiction that land was there for the taking for millions to start a new life.” But it was not a fiction, is not a fiction, since as he admits: “new lives, new communities, a new country: we established ourselves...” Then it becomes a little clearer that the supposed
fiction he is actually talking about is this area being “a blank slate, a new land,” when there had been Indians occasionally passing through a wilderness. He speaks of “Cree and Blackfoot nations in the general area surrounding what is now Camrose.” A tribe, a small group of people with no clearly demarcated boundary is not a nation any more than the Norwegian settlers of the area he first references were a nation. He claims “the Residential Schools have left a mark on the land: they are the physical link between our present and the times before the ‘settlement’ of this land.” In fact they are no physical link to the present since they mostly don’t exist; even the one in (this?)
area (Ermineskin) he notes has been replaced by a new school. And they only relate to the times before settlement in that they brought education to the uneducated. The schools were modeled on English boarding schools that groomed their ruling class, and in fact produced a generation of Native leaders. One of the myths spun recently by visiting Indians he tells us about is that “Camrose” is some other ridiculous name (not worth repeating!) that supposedly means “being part of a highway, a point through which various groups traveled through a territory they occupied by their movements rather than enclosing it by fences.” Sure, some Indians wandered by once
in a while and therefore it is their descendents’ land because they can make up such names and stories about how “sacred sites are still present all over this territory, and many people still visit them to pray and make offerings.” Huh? All over? I have lived in this area most of my life and fortunately have never heard of one such place. Unless you include Hobbema, which they now want to call something like “Muskrat Cheese.” Their “cultural revival” appears to consist mostly of constructing stories like the good professor encourages in order to get not only the current massive handouts but even more entitlements on the basis of race. “Things just don’t seem to last like they used to!” is a statement that is heard quite often. This is partly due to the fact that we have become a society that wants everything right now. Purchasing furniture of good quality and making a considerate choice of fabrics and style will result in furniture that will last and complement your decor for a long time. Here are some points to consider: • Frames of sofas and chairs should be constructed of kiln-dried hardwood or laminate with corner blocks and reinforced stress points. • Foam should be of high resiliency. Consider soy-based foam for the environment! • With the help of a knowledgeable salesperson, check the fabric content of the upholstery fabrics you are considering. (A textured polyester would be a better choice than a cotton if you have a young family.) • When purchasing dining room tables or occasional tables, consider solid wood construction from species that are indigenous to our area. Alberta is known for its very dry climate and it is not uncommon for imported furniture from other climates to crack. • Rustic finishes are very popular, giving a worn, treasured look to your decor. This finish also masks scratches of everyday wear and tear. • The finishing process on dining room tables should be hard and durable enough to withstand heat and stains. Resist the temptation to buy without careful consideration. The purchase of good furniture is an investment which can bring you pleasure for years on end! – Kyla Jonson

Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Verlyn Olson acknowledged the work of the directors of the Camrose Chamber of Commerce Feb. 5. “They have busy lives and many other things they could be doing,” said Olson, “so they deserve a pat on the back for being willing to support the Chamber like this.” Olson also commended the Chamber for the work that it is doing in promoting and helping business. “I do a lot of work in the area of rural development, and the way I see it, it is all about creating jobs in rural Alberta. Basically, that is what you are doing as well. If there are people with jobs, then there is a reason to have a school open or reason to have a hospital open and so on. It all fits together.”

The committee expressed doubts as to whether the improvements in the West Grandview area would create a precedent and result in residents in other parts of the city asking for the same consideration. “Our findings were that two short road sections (58 Street south of Mount Pleasant Drive and 63 Street north of Marler Drive) were designed and constructed to local road standards but are experiencing close to collector roadway traffic volumes,” said the committee. “These roadways could have been built to collector standards, however, in both cases, the areas served by these road sections are now fully developed and also constrained such that the observed volumes are unlikely to grow.

In addition, we observed no potential traffic operational problems whilst taking the counts, and we, therefore, concluded that no remedial measures are warranted in either case.” A survey conducted of property owners in the area in December indicated that 86 per cent of the 63 respondents were in favour of a plan that would bring in cul-desacs, that 14 per cent were opposed. Councillor Wayne Throndson concurred that the City of Camrose has a responsibility to do something since the problems the residents are experiencing with traffic is a result of the City’s dealings with development. “There must be something we can do to fix the problems of the residents,” said Throndson. “I can’t imagine 1,600 vehicles driv-
ing by my door per day. I get irritated when there are 20 vehicles that drive by.” Councillor Bill Sears suggested that the committee’s cul-de-sac recommendation be turned over to the City engineering department to be reviewed. “I would like to know what our people have to say about this if possible,” said Sears. Gibeault said the improvements could be worked into the plan to upgrade the streets in the subdivision in a couple of years’ time. “They (residents) would be willing to pay the cost of local improvements to the road, but would have a harder time to pay for the cost of the cul-de-sacs,” said Gibeault. “That is a problem that somebody else has created.”

Why choose luxury vinyl tile or luxury vinyl plank?
A.
You won’t believe it’s vinyl. Vinyl flooring has been around for generations. Today’s vinyl isn’t the faux flooring of yesteryear. Modern options are unique and trendy with finishes that closely resemble wood, tile and even stone. Cutting-edge technologies and digital designs make natural-looking textures and greater visual depth possible. Vinyl goes everywhere. Since vinyl replicates hardwood or tile, you can use it in so many ways throughout your home. From highmoisture spaces like bathrooms, to cozy family rooms where you want the look of hardwood. Comfortably superior. Today’s vinyl is available in sheets or as luxury vinyl tile. And whichever application works in your space, you’ll love the comfort it provides. Step across a vinyl floor in your stocking feet, and you’ll notice a more pliable feel to this surface that is relaxed and footfriendly. While there’s much to consider in creating the desired look, style and long-term performance of your floors, know that you’ll find beautiful flooring that’s made affordable at Wideman Carpet One. Why does European river cruising rank so highly with vacationers?
A:
River cruising has become one of today’s vacations of choice for countless seasoned travellers. Here are just some of the reasons: Low passenger count – typically river cruise ships hold about 130 people. Tourists really get to know fellow travellers on a river cruise. Appealing route – Your excursion will almost always go through the heart of a city. This is a wonderful way to experience the best of Europe. Enviable simplicity – On a river cruise you will usually unpack just one time. You will have more time to experience different cultures. Unique pricing structure – the rate you pay includes excursions! Novel dining option – One of the optional highlights of your river cruise will be to travel with your ship’s chef to pick out food directly from local markets. This is fascinating and enlightening. Variety – River cruises are also available in Asia and Africa. From personal experience, I know you will enjoy river cruising. Due to extreme popularity there is limited space left in the 2014 travel year. Get a jump on 2015 and talk to us about booking for a holiday memory you will cherish. Answer provided by:

Alberta Party leader Greg Clark listening to concerns By Murray Green
Greg Clark stopped in Camrose during a tour of the area to introduce himself to communities and listen to their concerns. He was named the leader of the Alberta Party last September. “I want to talk to as many people as I can. I think Alberta is an amazing place and that it can do almost anything. We are on the wrong track. The world around Alberta is changing faster than we are changing,” explained Clark. “One day we are going to wake up and ask where our prosperity went. We have amazing growth right now. Just look at Camrose and around the province. We grow by 100,000 people each year. But, the world is changing. If we don’t take steps now from a position of strength, there is a big risk that the world will pass us by. We have a double challenge of managing growth for today, but also looking down the road. We have to look not only how we can survive in that world, but how can we take advantages of those changes. We need to look at what we can do better than anyone else.” The Alberta Party leader is excited about those chal-
Greg Clark
lenges even though he believes the current government lacks vision. “That’s why I thought that I can make a difference in politics and with the Alberta Party. I don’t like the way the traditional parties operate. It’s all about power and from the top down. I like to remind everyone that the government works for us. The government ought to be afraid of the people. People shouldn’t be afraid of the government,” said Clark. The Alberta Party believes there should be more free votes in the legislature and that MLAs should have more power, and therefore be
more accountable to their constituents. While the current government has been in power for 42 years, Clark indicated that change has to be for the right reason. “Good ideas can come from anywhere. During the last campaign the Wildrose candidate answered a question before me. My answer was do what he said, because it was the right answer and a good idea. Why not work together? Our provincial leaders don’t reflect back to ourselves. As they move up they lose touch with their communities and its about winning the next election rather than what is best for the people of Alberta,” he added. “We firmly believe that MLAs should vote the way the most constituents would like, not what is best for the party.” One of members who ran in the last election, Tom Osborne, who is now on St. Albert City council, writes a weekly blog outlining the issues that were discussed at council and explains why he voted the way he did. “It is total transparency and that’s what we like,” said Clark. “Politics should be done in plain view of the public, that’s called democracy.”
Alberta is currently in debt for $7.8 billion, which the taxpayers in the province will have to pay off. It is increasing at an alarming rate. “The fact that we are in this position in the first place is the problem,” said Clark. “If you look back five years on one hand the government is predicting significant growth and a wonderful economy. Oil sands are going to grow and people are going to come flocking to this province. On the hand, during the recession in 2008 they should have started building infrastructure. I don’t have a problem with well-planned debt. Don’t come up with three different financial statements to confuse the public. If it is money we owe, then it is debt. They should be honest with that and not try to hide it. We all have mortgages, that is how we bought our houses.” Clark believes in living within our means and having a plan for paying debt. “The province receives a royalty from oil and gas each year and it should be reducing debt instead on banking on it every year for other projects. They have spent it like drunken sailors and assume it is going to be there every year,” Clark said. “For us in a household, if
we are lucky enough to get a bonus at the end of the year, we put it towards the mortgage. We should be putting our non-renewable resources funds into the Heritage Fund. Imagine what it would look like if we invested money from the last 15 years. We would have had $30 to $40 billion to do all sorts of interesting things. I hope we haven’t lost that opportunity.” The Alberta Party would look at ways to make resource money more stable. “If you fund health care, education, senior, or children’s programs based on yearly funding you get these big changes each year,” suggested Clark. “We need to be pro-active and plan ahead.” Clark believes the declining health care system and education process has the majority of Albertans concerned about the future. “I talked to someone in education and they said if you could give me $50 million I could do something with it. But, if you gave me $10 million a year for five years, I would definitely do something good with it,” he said. Continued on page 16

With the U.S. dollar now worth more, what’s your holiday recommendation for our future travels?
A:
You can never go wrong with a European E trip – and South America destinations are as hot as their d weather! w Everyone we send to Thailand, Vietnam, New Zealand or Australia wants Th il d Vi t to become a repeat visitor. But why not make this the year to really see Canada? It’s ironic that people from all over the world flock to Canada to see our world-class cities, three oceans and our spectacular outdoors, yet we, as tourists, typically feel the need to leave our own country. Our Maritimes are truly spectacular; Victoria, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City are among our must-see cities. Our Rocky Mountains are world renowned. And the true north is truly fabulous. We can counsel you on sites of which you may never have thought. We can arrange everything from train travel to day excursions. We can book your airfare and save you money on accommodations. We can help you plan that trip, no matter where your dreams take you – the great country of Canada, included! Answer provided by:

Q. A:
While an RRSP and TFSA both allow you to save money and reduce taxes now or in the future, each has unique features to consider when contributing and withdrawing money. The chief advantage to a Spousal Registered Retirement Savings Plan (Spousal RRSP) is to minimize taxes owing down the road when you each retire by splitting potential taxable income when you withdraw the money. Ideally, the smaller amounts withdrawn from each spouse’s registered savings vehicles will result in lower taxes compared with one large withdrawal each year from a single account. CRA allows you to contribute to your spouse’s RRSP, but those contributions count towards your annual contribution limit. The contributing spouse (you, for example) then deducts the contribution from your taxable income. There is no such thing as a spousal TFSA. Unlike a spousal RRSP, it is your spouse’s available TFSA contribution room that limits how much money they can contribute to the account. As with any TFSA contribution, there is no tax credit to be claimed by the contributor, but the money grows tax-free and can be withdrawn at any time, tax-exempt. Also, any money withdrawn from the TFSA can be contributed the following calendar year in addition to your allowable contribution limit, unlike an RRSP or spousal RRSP.
Q.
How common is hearing loss?
A:
Having a hearing loss today is not as uncommon as one may believe. u The following statistics from the Better Hearing Institute illustrate this gap B bbetween those with hearing losses and those who seek care. - 1 in 4 workers exposed to high levels of noise will develop a hearing loss - only 13% of general practitioners screen for hearing loss. - 3 in every 10 people over age 60 have a hearing loss - 1 in every 6 people between ages 41 to 59 has a hearing loss. - 1 in every 14 Generation X’ers (29-40) already has a hearing loss. - 1.4 million children (under 18) have hearing problems - Only 1 in 5 people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wear one. - 9 out of 10 hearing aid users report improvements in their quality of life. Clearly, these statistics are startling. This truly indicates that a lot of people are choosing to go without the benefits of solutions for their hearing loss. Most often, this can be due to confusion over what benefit hearing aids can provide and which type of hearing aid is best for a specific person’s loss. Call today for a consultation. Q. A:
Is it better to save money with a RRSP or a TFSA? Both are great to consider when thinking about saving but which one is better for you depends on your financial situation.
Here are a few things to consider: RRSPs defer the tax that you will pay. You don’t pay tax on the income in the year that you invest with an RRSP but you pay tax on the principal amount and the interest earned when you withdraw the funds. If you invest in RRSPs when you are in a higher marginal tax bracket than you plan to be when you withdraw them, you will pay less tax on that income earned. Also consider if you can take advantage of the first-time Home Buyers Plan and Lifelong Learning Plan which lets you withdraw RRSPs and pay them back over time, without paying tax in the year of withdrawal. TFSA don’t offer you any tax savings when you initially invest. When you withdraw money you don’t pay any tax on the interest earned or the initial amount invested. It is always beneficial to you to pay less tax but the TFSA is especially beneficial (compared to the RRSP) if you plan withdraw the funds in a year that you are in a high marginal tax bracket. I am worried about the sun damaging my furniture and floors, but I still want to enjoy my beautiful view. How should I dress my windows to solve both of these issues?
A:
Solar shades are an ideal choice for anyone wishing to maintain an exterior view while keeping heat out and coolness within. While maintaining your comfort, Solar shades block UV rays, protecting interiors from damage and minimizing TV and computer glare. Choose higher openness(7%-14%) fabrics for a better view to the outside, or lower openness(1%-5%) fabrics for better UV blockage. A solar shade is a convenient and easy-to-operate roller shade that is available in a broad selection of colors and valance or fascia styles. Many fabrics in the solar shade collection also coordinate with sliding panel fabrics to accommodate patio or garden doors. Use a versatile dual roller shade to have control over the amount of light entering your room and the degree of privacy. The innovative design pairs two fabrics from the solar and /roller shade collections. Either shade can be raised or lowered independently of the other to give you both privacy at night and a view during the day, while still keeping out UV rays and heat. Q. A:
Are there any natural remedies for bladder infections?
Urinary tract infections are a ccommon complaint and are the ssecond most common infection after rrespiratory infections. They occur commonly in women than in men. The much more co following are some alternative remedies that seem to have a proven track record. 1. Cranberry – Unsweetened juice has been used for more than a century as a home remedy to prevent and treat urinary tract infection. Cranberry capsules are also available. 2. Uva Ursi – another popular herbal supplement to treat symptoms of UTI 3. Cystitis Formula – a homeopathic remedy used to treat the infection and to improve overall health, averting further infections with well-known infection treating properties. Taken as drops. An infection can be limited to the bladder; however, if not treated promptly or completely, it can spread to the kidneys causing serious consequences. Alternative and conventional approaches do share one aspect of bladder infection treatment. They both promote self-help measures, such as drinking a lot of water and cranberry juice and maintaining good hygiene. It’s important to remember that while natural remedies can be effective, you should consult your health care professional regarding any concerns you have about medical conditions. Answer provided by:

Kidney Foundation pays tribute to pioneers By Dan Jensen
The Camrose and District Chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada paid tribute to late Ken Nyback Sr. and Wayne Gaalaas during a pioneer dinner at the Norsemen Inn Feb. 19. Nyback Sr. established the Camrose Kidney Machine Association in 1970 to raise funds to support the purchase of a home dialysis unit for Wayne Gaalaas, a Camrose businessman who was going to Edmonton several times a week in an old Volkswagen car for dialysis treatments which often lasted half a day. “I remember Ken coming into the kitchen one afternoon and he was very sad, wondering what he could do for this young man that he had met in the lumber yard,” said Ken’s wife, Rita. “He was told that if this young man had a home dialysis machine that everything would be fine for him.” Wayne knew the home dialysis machine would allow him to spend more time at home. “In those days after you got off work, you drove to Edmonton,” he said. “It took you an hour to drive there, then an hour to get the machine ready before the dialysis began, which usually took 12 hours two to three hours a week. After that you had to clean up the machine then take another hour to drive back home.” After going to the bank to get a loan for $7,000 to purchase the machine, Ken Sr., with the help of Wayne and others in the community set out on an ambitious fundraising campaign that included steak fries, barn dances and oyster suppers. “That is when all of you took part and helped raise the money for what was needed,” said Rita. “It was absolutely awesome to see what happened and what is happening today.” Judy Louis, one of the nine Nyback children, said Wayne was a living legend in her family. “My mom and dad had such a passion for this man.” Judy noted that while her father was a very humble man, it was very hard to get his trust. “For some reason, the man sitting over there (Wayne) touched my dad’s heart like no one else had. When he talked about Wayne the tone of his voice would change.” Judy remembers being involved in most of her father’s fundraising activities. “”My dad had nine kids and I swear he had nine kids so we could all work with him in the kidney fund and raise funds,” said Judy.
Camrose mayor Norm Mayer, left and Dr. Ray Ulan, right, a retired nephrologist, presented certificates of appreciation at a Kidney Foundation Camrose Pioneer Celebration Dinner Feb. 19 to Rita Nyback (second from left) and Wayne and Marlene Gaalaas for the work they have done in promoting the Kidney Foundation over the years. The dinner, which also included a live auction, raised a total of $16,630 for the Kidney Foundation.
“One of the first projects was going around selling trick or treat candy at Halloween. I remember my dad would keep taking us out until we sold them all and whatever we didn’t sell my mom would buy.”
“It was absolutely awesome to see what happened and what is happening today.” -Rita Nyback The fundraising campaign received the generous support of many service groups in the community – Lions, Rotary, Moose and Women of the Moose, Legion, Knights of the Columbus and Elks – as well as churches, employee associations and unions. “It was an example of what a community can do,” said Judy. Nyback’s son, Ken Nyback Jr., said his dad loved working with the Camrose Kidney Machine Association and, later, the Camrose and District Chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada – the first chapter in Alberta. “That was the most enjoyment my dad, working with the Kidney Foundation and Wayne,” said Ken Jr. “Wayne was a close friend and was an inspiration to all of us who are here.” Raising $7,000 to fund the purchase of the kidney machine was no easy task. “I will just say this:
back in those days I was making $225 a month and the machine was $7,000,” said Wayne. “That was a lot of money to be raised and it was unbelievable the way the money came in through the oyster suppers, the steak fries and the barn dances and whatever. It was pretty touching to see.” Wayne was trained in the use of the dialysis machine by Dr. Ray Ulan, who, as a resident physician at the University of Alberta Hospital in 1962, started the first patient in dialysis. “The first night I dialyzed at home it went not too bad, but the second night I was having so much trouble and it was at around 11:30 p.m. or 12 at night,” said Wayne. “I couldn’t get it working and I had some of the blood out of me, so finally we phoned Dr. Ulan. “Believe it or not he had a Volkswagen too and he drove all the way to Camrose and finally got the machine going. He left our home at 3 a.m. in the morning.” A Camrose nurse who worked with Gaalaas for many years while he was on home dialysis was Agnes Hoveland. “It was a pleasure to work with him right up until he received the (kidney) transplant on March 7, 1978,” said Agnes. “We had a routine where he was on dialysis three times a week for four hours. I would go over and often my girls would go with me. Marlene (Gaalaas) would keep an eye on them as they played with Jeff and Jill (the Gaalaas children) in the pool room or watched television.” Agnes said her daugh-
ters were not afraid of the dialysis process, and understood it as someone who needed to have the junk cleaned out of his blood just as they had to clean the junk out of their room. Agnes was impressed with the way the community came together to support Wayne. “We had 700 people at the first oyster dinner,” she recalled. “The hundreds of people who came from all over for the oyster dinners and later the pit barbecues were evidence of the excitement and the enthusiasm and the commitment of a caring community led by Ken and Rita. “They demonstrated and set an extraordinary example of what a community can accomplish.” Jill Gaalaas, daughter of Wayne, said the dialysis that her father had to do seemed to her and her brother as a normal process. “I did not fear or worry very much. My folks were always positive, especially my mom. It is through hindsight though, and especially reminiscing with my mom and dad, that I realize how lucky we were to have him home.” Some of the scariest times, said Jill, came when her father had to drive back from Edmonton in minus 40 degree temperatures after being hooked up to a dialysis machine for 12 hours. “Dad would be so exhausted sometimes that he would have to pull over to rest, and of course, back in those days, with no cell phones, he could not let mom know that he had to stop. She would call the hospital and they would tell her he left hours ago. Thankfully he always made it home.”
Jill said having the home dialysis machine gave her family more time together. “Whenever there were struggles or problems, the support from the doctors at the renal unit in Edmonton was just a phone call away.” Jill said there are no words to express her family’s gratitude to Ken Sr., his wife, Rita, and the countless people he inspired to raise the funds necessary to purchase the dialysis machine for her dad and those who were able to use the machine after him. LeRoy Johnson shared a funny story about the time Wayne came into the classroom at Camrose Lutheran College and told students in a light-hearted way about his experiences with kidney failure. He added that if laughter is the best medicine, Wayne has given as much medicine in this community as he has had. “You just mention his name to people and immediately a smile comes onto their face,” said LeRoy. “If you ask them what they are thinking, the stories start flowing and there are a lot of them.” Wayne expressed appreciation at the dinner to the Nyback family for the support they gave him and his wife, Marlene. “I can’t say enough about them and I could never thank Ken enough,” he said. “We became close friends and we spent a lot of time together over the years. He was a remarkable man and he has a remarkable family.” Wayne also expressed his appreciation to the community as a whole. “When I see a crowd like this it makes me realize I have a lot of friends.”

lem now, there is no planning in place. Our dropping math scores worry me a lot. We need to look at places in Canada that are doing well and see what they are doing.” Clark said front line health care workers do a really good job. “Overall in health care, we pay a lot for just a good service. But, why can’t we get the great service we pay for.” Clark pointed out that Alberta spends more per capita on health care then anywhere else in Canada, but that our outcomes are only middle of the pack. “We’re spending more, but not getting more,” said Clark. “Hospitals are very good at handling acute care. But, we have to handle chronic problems better.” Clark thinks the smaller communities will remain strong because everyone has a stronger sense of what a community needs. “People are people and it is about helping others. As a city person, I enjoy going into rural communities. The close-knit communities have something special and we need to keep that in place.”

Seussical the Musical starts this Friday By Dan Jensen
The last few weeks have been
amazing!
Stockmen’s Chophouse would like ke to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for your heartwarming support of our new restaurant, and to talk about what we do and what to look forward to in the near future. Firstly, our guiding philosophy is Quality over Quantity. Our ingredients are picked daily by our chef, many from local producers, and freshly prepared before each and every lunch and dinner seating. This allows us the flexibility to use unique, exciting ingredients that we can change on any day. As the seasons transition, so will our menu and the local producers we are able to buy from, and that is something we can all look forward to. Just around the corner we will also be introducing our Chef’s Table. If you’ve been in before, you would have noticed a small alcove with a table in it. This will open in the next few weeks and on Friday and Saturday nights, the menu will be a unique, five- to eight-course dinner with the fl exibility of having each course paired with wine. We will also customize menus if requested. This table will be available for groups of four and up to eight people. What a wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion, or just a fun Friday or Saturday night in Camrose! We currently have 21 tables and, with the high demand for a seat, we strongly encourage reservations. With that being said, we still do take walk-ins, but if you are certain of a day and time you would like to join us, a reservation is always best. Now that we have settled in, we will begin preparations for our Grand Opening. If you haven’t added us on Facebook, please do so, and keep an eye on our website for updates on the Grand Opening and other fun events we plan on having, such as wine-paired dinners and visits by winemakers from different parts of the world. Stockmen’s Chophouse is so excited to be part of the community, and can’t wait to share many days and nights with each of you. You’ve read the books and seen the stories adapted to television, but have never had the opportunity to see what they look like on the stage. Until now. About Time Productions will be presenting Seussical the Musical, a compilation of some of the best loved Dr. Seuss stories, at the Bailey Theatre Feb. 28 to March 2 and March 7 to 9. A sold-out dinner theatre performance will be held March 1. “The play is just a blast,” said Ethan Snowden, who has participated in two other About Time Productions shows. “I would have to say that getting the chance to play The Cat in the Hat has made this the best musical fun-wise in which I have ever been involved. The characters we have read about are just so fun to portray.” Seussical the Musical involves 31 cast members ranging in age eight to 18 who have been rehearsing three-and-one-half hours every Sunday since last September – some coming from as far away as Leduc, Millet, Wetaskiwin and Daysland. “It’s probably one of the best we have done so far,” said About Time Productions artistic director Cat h ie Joh nson. “We have some incredibly talented cast members who have placed highly in voice and musical theatre at provincial music festivals.” Seussical the Musical is bound to appeal to both adults and children alike.
“The adults will like it because of the memories it stirs and the children will like it because it will give them a chance to see characters like Cat in the Hat and Horton Hears a Who,” said Johnson. All of Dr. Seuss’s stories have some kind of meaning attached to them. Gertrude with the One Feather Tail, is Dr. Seuss’s way of saying you are beautiful how you are and don’t have to change the way you look. Horton Hears a Who carries the message that a person is a person no matter how small or large they are. “His stories are ones that can be enjoyed on many different levels,” explained Johnson. Seussical the Musical has enjoyed outstanding buy-in from the youth in the community. Students from Mr. Doig’s class at the Camrose Composite High School built the set, while 16-year-old Beyata Hackborn designed most of the costumes. “Everything has been pretty much done by children,” said Johnson, adding that the back stage is being run by children who are interested in learning that part of theatrical productions. “We (About Time Productions) try to do as much children-oriented stuff as we possibly can because that is what we are all about. It is exciting for me because we are using the talents of the younger generations, the kids who think they can’t do anything. Well, yes they can. We had kids build and paint the set and it is wonderful.”

Now one of the most performed shows in America, SEUSSICAL is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! The story centers – not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes “his kind and his powerful heart.” Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry. Seniors’ Chat Aging in Numbers – Aging in Place Submitted by Camrose Seniors’ Coalition
Between 2006 and 2011, the number of Canadian seniors increased by 14 per cent to nearly five million. In contrast, the rate of growth for people 15 to 64 grew by just under six per cent. As of 2011, close to 15 per cent of Canadians were 65 years of age or older, with many living well into their 80s, 90s and beyond. Closer to home, 11 per cent of Albertans are seniors and, of the 17,286 Camrosians recorded in the 2011 census, 19 per cent were 65 years of age or older – well above the provincial and national average. What does this mean? Going by numbers alone, ‘seniors’ is the fastest growing demographic. Locally, we have lots of older people. And, while the number of seniors continues to increase as baby boomers age, the number of elderly people is also increasing as more people are living longer. Aging in numbers.
Aging in place. How can the two go hand in hand? A Government of Alberta survey conducted towards the end of 2008 confirmed that 90 per cent of Albertans want to live independently in their own homes for most or even all of their senior years. For many, this is not an unrealistic goal. In fact, the 2011 census indicates that the vast majority of Camrose seniors are living independently in private households. Many seniors are healthy, social, mobile and well able to take care of themselves and contribute to their families and communities for years, even decades. How do seniors and their families determine if or when it is time to move into a care facility? How are needs assessed and placement decisions made? How are facilities integrated into the ‘aging in place’ continuum? And, once the needs are obvious and a move inevitable, where, among the various facilities in or around Camrose, is the best place for a senior to be? Anyone who is getting older or has an aging
loved one has likely thought about ‘aging in place’ and wondered exactly what is meant by that expression – as well as other expressions, like ‘designated supportive living’, ‘long-term care’, and ‘levels 3 and 4’. Many are confused about how things are paid for and, at least at the beginning of the process, lots of people aren’t really sure who makes decisions about services, placement, coverage, and so on. Is it the facility operator? Is it Alberta Health Services? Is it the senior and his or her family? These questions will be addressed at an information evening hosted by Camrose Seniors’ Coalition on Thursday, March 6, 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Camrose United Church. Panelists will include representatives from Alberta Health Services, The Bethany Group and Sunrise Village. A silver collection at the door will help cover costs incurred by the church. The March 6 event is part of an Elders in Care Conversation started last June by Camrose Seniors’ Coalition.

Stay on track Rebecca Nelson, financial advisor, Edward Jones
Living pay cheque to pay cheque? Unexpected expenses regularly throwing your retirement savings goals offtrack? This is a good time to schedule a financial planning checkup with a financial advisor. The key to staying on track for retirement is having a plan. And, contrary to what you may think, developing a pro-active plan is just as important (perhaps more) when money is tight than when it’s not. A good wealth-building plan is one that not only structures investments positioned for growth but also engages in sound financial planning that takes into account your current income and likely future needs. Whether you are just starting out in your career or nearing retirement age, a pro-active financial plan needs to be created, monitored and maintained to help you develop the consistency and discipline needed to achieve your financial goals. So, how can a plan get you back on-track? First, working with a professional financial advisor will enable you to assess where you are today, financially speaking. Many investors think they can do this on their own, but, unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Reviewing your current financial position with an advisor will help uncover any gaps and issues. Important questions include: What are my current assets, including my investments and home? How much do I owe? What are my current monthly expenses? How much am I saving each month? Next, your advisor and you will talk about your future financial needs, including how much money you may need in retirement. Your plan may also involve developing strategies to improve your savings outlook and uncover any untapped opportunities, such as: catching up on unused RRSP room, taking advantage of income splitting with a lowerearning spouse, maximizing TFSA contributions, moving non-registered investments to a TFSA, adjusting your asset allocation or investment mix in accordance with risk tolerance. Most importantly, remember that a financial advisor is there to help you, and not to judge what you have or haven’t accomplished financially. To create your own customized investment strategy, speak with a financial advisor and start taking some small steps to greater savings toward your retirement or other life goals.

Rate of inflation can have a major impact on your retirement savings plan By Cindy Cook, Financial Planner, Royal Mutual Funds
The inflation rate has been relatively low for the last two decades – averaging 2.4 per cent annually over the past 20 years – so it’s hard for most people to believe it will have any impact on their savings or long-term financial goals. But the truth is that it does. Even a low inflation rate can have a major financial impact over time. For example, with inflation at levels as low as two per cent, prices rise by almost 50 per cent every 20 years and double every 35 years. So if you’re 20 years away from retirement and you think you’ll need $40,000 a year to live comfortably, you’ll really need close to $60,000 in 2031. And that assumes inflation stays at its current low level and that there are no major changes to your lifestyle. The goods and services that you need now might be different from what you may need in the future
and these might also be affected differently by the rate of inflation. The bottom line is that the goods and services you enjoy today will cost more by the time you retire. And prices are likely to continue to increase over the course of your retirement. With life expectancies still rising and many people living 20 to 30 years or more in retirement, building the impact of inflation into your financial plan is more important than ever. The good news is that there are steps you can take today that can reduce or eliminate the negative impact that inflation can have on your spending power over time. There are several strategies that can help offset the impact that inflation can have on your buying power. And when these strategies are used together, your buffer against the impact of inflation grows even more.
Here are three strategies you may want to consider: Start with a plan. It may seem like simple advice, but saving without a plan is a bit like driving across the country without a map. You may start out in the right direction, but you could lose your way – or even give up in the process. When it comes to saving, start by using investment calculators and products. These are simple and highly effective ways to quantify how much you should save and the rate of return you will need to achieve your goals. Many investment calculators include inf lation rate assumptions that let you build the impact of inflation into your financial planning. Even better, a financial advisor can take your planning to a higher level by providing a big-picture look at your entire financial situation and helping you build the finan-
cial security you need in retirement. When you’re saving for a long-term goal such as retirement, it’s important to factor inflation into your investment decision making. While the safety of treasury bills, money market funds and other cash investments is appealing, they can do little to offset the impact of inflation. Inflation is approximated by monthly change in Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the 20-year period. The average real rate of return is calculated by subtracting the monthly change in CPI from the monthly nominal rate of return. The net amount is then annualized over the period. Prior to implementing any strategies contained in this article individuals should consult with a qualified tax advisor, accountant, legal professional or other professional to discuss implications specific to their situation.

William “Bill” Schwonik April 29, 1925 – February 17, 2014
William ‘Bill’ was born to Julius and Olga (nee Draves) Schwonik in Edmonton, AB. He was raised on a dairy farm and went to Grayson School in Edmonton. In his early years, he played the guitar in a band. Bill moved to Victoria, BC, where he worked on a tulip farm and delivered milk. He met Margaret Gill in Victoria and they were married on April 26, 1946. Bill and Margaret were blessed with three sons Gordon, John and Douglas, and three daughters Linda, Wendy and Kathie. Bill and Margaret made Wetaskiwin their home for over 55 years. Bill had many talents. He worked as a heavy duty mechanic (Merner Motors, R Angus, Sam Morrow and Denham Ford); built round grain bins; opened a service station with a partner in Leduc, AB; and built homes with Ben George for many years. Finally, Bill started his own company, Sharp-All-Service, out of his garage. Over the years, Bill met many people from all over who came to have saws, skates and knives sharpened. As a couple, Bill and Margaret enjoyed square dancing, and insisted all their children learn to dance. Some of Bill’s other hobbies included playing shuffleboard, bowling, bingo and horse racing. Bill loved horses so much that he and his two sons (Gordon and John) started Tywin Stables and had harness race horses. Even after Bill sold the horses, he still liked to follow horse racing. When Margaret was ill with Alzheimer’s, Bill became known at the long term unit as the flower man! For as long as any of the family can remember, Bill always bought flowers for Margaret. Bill will be missed dearly. Some of the family’s fondest memories are his sense of humour, his love of music and pride in his grandchildren. Bill enjoyed and rarely missed going to watch his grandchildren at ball games, hockey games, bowling matches, musical performances, graduations and weddings. Bill was 88 years young and is survived by his sister Freda; and his children Gordon, John (Jan), Linda (Gus), Wendy (Brian) and Kathie (Murray). Bill had seven grandchildren, Stacey (Craig), Greg, Heidi, Karl (Andrea), Brett (Candace), Derek (Jenna) and Jordy; three great-grandchildren Abram, Emily and Megan, and baby Green on the way; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his wife Margaret; infant son Douglas; parents Julius and Olga; four brothers; and two sisters. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ila Mae Lotzer
IN MEMORY
“OPPA” Wilhelm F. (Willy) Hercher April 7, 1922 – February 12, 2014
You brought music into our hearts. Willy passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 12, 2014. He was predeceased by his wife Alice; survived by his sister Lottie Rissler (Germany); and will be missed by his family: his son and daughter-in-law Dieter and Carmen Hercher and their three children Sean, Christa, and Kyle; in Edmonton by his daughter and son-in-law, Trixie and Les Garvey, their son Christopher, and their daughter and son-in-law Jessica and Scott (Davies). Great-grandchildren Senn and Ben will miss their Ur-Oppa very much. Oppa came to Canada in 1952 and truly made a wonderful life for himself, his wife and family. He made many happy memories of the outdoors, camping and life at the lake. He instilled the love of music through his accordion and will always be thought of fondly by many people singing songs around a campfire. Hard work, honesty and integrity are just a few words that describe this simple man whose photo smile charmed many people. Oppa did not want a funeral, but the family will be hosting a celebration of life for him and Alice in the summer. Friends will be contacted with details.
March 16, 1926 – February 17, 2014 Ila Mae (Nichols) Lotzer was born on March 16, 1926, the eldest child of Roy and Robina Nichols. She was raised on the farm near Rosalind. As a child, Ila’s chores included bringing in the cows from the pasture. When she was old enough, she learned to help milk the cows and take care of the chickens. The Nichols separated their milk and took their cream to Rosalind, where it was shipped by train to Camrose. On Friday nights, the cans were shipped back to Rosalind and it was a treat for the kids to go into Rosalind with their parents to meet the train. Friday nights were a time to socialize at MacDonald’s General Store or at the Benz Café. Ila married Elmer Lotzer on July 11, 1946. Her life as a farmer’s wife was similar to that of her life as a farmer’s daughter. While preparing for her marriage, Ila studied the Catholic faith with Monsignor Lyons, converted to the Catholic faith, embraced it completely and never looked back. Sharon was born in 1954, Diane in 1957 and Glenn in 1964. Ila planned for annual family vacations and worked tirelessly to get everything done by July so they could travel, sometimes as far as southern California, sometimes family camping or fishing trips. On February 5th, Ila’s doctor sadly informed her that she had a very aggressive liver cancer. She handled her final days with her usual grace and cheerfulness. She passed away at the age of 87 on February 17 in St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by her children. Ila was predeceased by her parents; husband Elmer; sister Connie Sheets; brother Delbert; and brother-in-law James Thirsk; and all of Elmer’s brothers and sisters. Left to cherish her memory are daughters Sharon (Kevin) Drader and Diane (Dennis) Lindroth of Sherwood Park; son Glenn; one sister Ellen Thirsk; sister-in-law Joyce Nichols; grandsons Chris (Holly) of Tangent, AB and Michael (Crystal) of Glendon, AB; granddaughters Karilynn (Mike) Rajotte of Edmonton and Marissa Lindroth of Sherwood Park; great-grandchildren Cole and Jax Drader of Tangent, Teagan Rajotte of Edmonton, Declan Drader of Glendon; step-great-granddaughter Hannah Rajotte of Calgary; as well as nieces, nephews, family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 24, 2014 from Our Lady of the Prairies Roman Catholic Church, Daysland with Rev. Leon Kler as celebrant. Interment has taken place in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Bawlf. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Bawlf, The Open Door, Camrose, or to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Hilda Emma Olsen September 21, 1929 – February 16, 2014 Hilda was born in Endiang, AB on September 21, 1929. She was the second of five children born to David and Johanna Esslinger. Her early memories were of farm life, hard work, walking to school and being very involved with church activities. Hilda accepted Jesus as her personal Saviour at a young age and, to her last day, desired to serve Him. She worked with her older sister in Edmonton, sending home her pay to assist her family. It was in Edmonton that she met the love of her life – her best friend Robert (Bob) Olsen. They were married on May 28, 1949 in Edmonton, AB. They had four daughters who loved farm life as much as they did. They lived in Ferintosh, AB; moved to Chico, California for a couple of years; returned to farm life in Camrose; and they retired to the City of Camrose in 1989. They loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, golfing and enjoying their ‘retirement’ with winter vacations in Mesa, Arizona. Hilda was a gifted seamstress, cook and hostess, decorated cakes professionally and enjoyed multiple crafts. They loved having their children and grandchildren enjoy the farm (skidooing, skating, hayrides, camping, ATVs and as many toys as Grandpa could buy!). Bob and Hilda worked together in prayer ministry for many years in Camrose, and had the joy of seeing many people healed (physically and spiritually), restored and made whole through the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. Mom continued to pray for many hours for whoever the Lord laid upon her heart – up to her last day here on earth. Hilda passed away peacefully February 16, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital. She is survived by her four daughters Geri (Don) Taylor, Betty (Bob) DuBois, Bev (Ed) Nordvall, LaVonna Smith (Doug MacKenzie); 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her brothers Dave (Doreen) Esslinger and Ed (Elenor) Esslinger; and her sister Freda Muth. She was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob) Olsen and sister Alma Sherman. A funeral service was held on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. from First Baptist Church (6406-44B Avenue, Camrose) with Rev. Frank Wilson and Rev. Rick Williams officiating. Interment has taken place Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Gideons International or the charity of one’s choice. When to Clean?
Why Clean?
• Regularly (every four to five years) • After renovations – Remodelling can create sanding dust that continues to circulate well after the job is complete • Before you have a new furnace installed • After purchasing a new or a new-to-you home • After you’ve had mice invade your home • More often if your family has allegies • More often if you have an active household • More often if you have pets in your home
Cleaning your furnace system controls dust and allergens in your home. Each time your furnace starts, contaminates are carried in the flow of the warm air through your home. The air is then recycled through the cold air returns. Symptoms of poor indoor air quality may include rashes, eye problems, headaches, dizziness, coughing, colds, breathing problems or fatigue.

Sifton playground finds new a home By Dan Jensen
Just because something no longer meets Canadian code doesn’t mean that it can’t still serve a good purpose. Rotarians Ron Grue and Kim Boyco will be attempting to prove that point over the next couple of weeks when they, along with Gord Schmidt, Kim’s mother and daughter, and a fellow Rotarian from Calgary, begin the process of installing playground equipment once used by the students at Sifton School in the community of Otoxha, Belize. The location will be at the school that Grue and other Rotarians built a year ago. “The playground has, I believe, a very important purpose,” said Grue. “The hope is that it will bring kids to the school and keep them involved.” After being dismantled piece by piece, the Sifton School playground equipment was painted and restored by the Emmanuel Foundation for International Community Development. “It was being shipped to Otoxha in containers, so hopefully it is all there when we arrive,” said Grue, who left last Thursday. Much of the initial work involved in installing the playground will consist of digging holes for the posts. “We are going to have to put in 50 posts so we will have to dig 50 holes, most likely by hand since there won’t be any machines,” said Grue. “Once that is done, we will have to cement all the poles into place. We are not sure whether we are going to use sand or wood shavings, because the sand is so expensive and the cost of transporting it is about $450 a load.” The Rotarians and their helpers will also be helping to set up a water wheel made by Schmidt at the community’s river, and installing a
$1,200 solar panel light that was donated by Bryan Beattie, from Blaze Plastics Ltd. “The idea of the wheel is to pump water from the river up into a holding tank,” said Grue. “The system is mechanical, with no power, and can be adjusted if the river levels rise or fall.” Once the water is in the tank, it will be sent to a station that can be used by the residents for showers, dishes and laundry. “Right now,” said Grue, “the old people have to walk into the river to bathe.” Grue feels that the new water station, once equipped with its solar-panelled light, will serve as a community gathering place. “It is going to be awesome; it will be the only light that the community has,” he said. The school in Otoxha was built by the Rotarians at a total cost of approximately $23,000, with $16,000 of that amount coming from the Rotary Club of Camrose. “It looked really good when it was finished,” said Grue, adding that the school was painted by a group of students from Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School after he left. “I put in a solar system when I was there, so when I go down again this time I will be taking along a couple of batteries that we hope will increase its capacity.” Grue will never forget the response he received from the students at the Otoxha School when he turned on the power there for the first time. “The school that they had was wired years before,” he said. “Everything was to the breaker panel, but it had never been connected to a power source. The kids thought it was really cool to have lights on in the school.” Grue was very impressed with the people of Otoxha, who, despite not having very much, were very friendly and open.
Some Like It Hot jazz concert held at CCHS By Murray Green
The Camrose Composite High School music department will be presenting its 24th annual Some Like It Hot music concert at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. You can enjoy hot chili and hot jazz music on the same evening with students providing the entertainment. The CCHS Jazz Ensemble, CCHS Jazz Combo and the vocal jazz group Chorazz will all be performing. A special tribute “In Our Hearts” arrangement of music by the Bailey family will honour former CCHS student P.J. Bailey.
Some Like It Hot was launched to feature the jazz component of the CCHS music program. Over the years it has grown and the funds raised go towards providing additional support for activities of the music program. The supper will be a smorgasbord of several types of chili, salads, buns, beverages and dessert. People are asked to bring their own dishes and cutlery for this environmentally-friendly event. Tickets are available from music students, at the CCHS office and a few limited ones at the door.
Rotarian Ron Grue, Bryan Beattie, from Blaze Plastics, and Gord Schmidt show the solar panel that will be installed in the community of Otoxha, Belize. Ron believes the panel could be the centerpiece of a community gathering place.

The word is getting out on the best kept secret in real estate. The Home Program offers free education about how to buy a house, and then it gives you money on top of it. The successful program is in its fourth year in Camrose of helping local people to learn about all of the aspects of purchasing a home. Realtor Glenda Rott, of Coldwell Banker Battle River Realty, is organizing the program that has already helped more than 60 residents. “We had about 28 people take the five-hour workshop last year and four people took advantage of the financial assistance,” she explained. “People don’t have to buy right away. I was told that someone just bought their first property after taking the program 10 years ago. The funds are held for them until they are ready to buy.” The Home Program helps buyers by providing them with all the information they need to make the right decision with buying a home. “The five hours of free education are worth the time, even if they don’t take advantage of the funds,” Glenda said. “This program is ideal for anyone who is thinking about purchasing a home in the future.” The workshops will be held at the Camrose Public Library on March 12 and 19 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Attendance at both sessions is required to be eligible for financial assistance. The program was originally developed to help low and moderate income buyers, but has expanded over the years to include anyone interested in purchasing their own home. “In the mortgage portion,” said Glenda, “the difference between open and closed, fixed versus variable, and whether to go with a bank or mortgage broker, are all explained.” Glenda will talk about finding the right home for you. “Buyers need to think about what suits their needs. The realtor part of the course will cover the differences between renting and buying, condos versus houses, and what is the best resale value,” Glenda said. “You want to shop in the right price range to make it comfortable for making payments.” Following the home inspection guidelines could save a lot of money alone. “The home inspector goes through everything to look for in the property, from shingles down to the base-

Augustana sports teams headed into playoff competition By Murray Green
The Grant MacEwan Griffins captured first place by defeating the Augustana Vikings women’s basketball team 71-44. Kelsey Lund netted 13 points in the loss. Augustana won the rematch 63-57 to close out the season in second place. Lund paced the Vikings’ attack with 33 points in the contest. Taryn Story added 11 points in support. The squad is waiting for the playoff qualifying results to decide which team they play in the championship tournament in Olds Feb. 28 to March 2. The men’s team lost both games to Grant MacEwan, 74-54 and 82-63. Lee Danderfer scored 16 points in the first game and Aikens Cole netted 20 in the rematch to lead the Vikings in scoring to close out the season. Curling
The ACAC provincials were played in Vermilion and hosted by Lakeland College Feb. 21 to 23. Augustana entered men’s and mixed teams. Last year the men’s team captured silver medals and the mixed team reaped the gold. Nationals for women’s and men’s teams will be in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, March 18 to 22. Volleyball
The Augustana Vikings men’s volleyball team has spent the last two weeks preparing for the Medicine Hat Rattlers in the Alberta College Athletic Conference playoffs. After a week of preparation in which they totally focused on the Rattlers, Augustana faced the snakes on Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. The 11-7 regular season men’s team finished in fifth place to earn a spot in the second round of playoffs. Hockey
The Augustana Vikings had the weekend off to prepare for Portage in a two-game series. Augustana closes out the regular season at home against Concordia on March 1. The first round of playoffs will begin on March 7 for the Vikings. The opponent has yet to be determined.

Kodiaks extend winning streak to four games By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks remain the hottest team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League by running their winning streak to four games with a 3-0 shut out of the Calgary Mustangs on Feb. 17. Camrose scored a goal in each period to give families a day to celebrate. Matt Waseylenko scored in the first, Luc Lemire added a single marker in the second and Braeden Salverda broke the horses by taking the game out of reach in the third. “We really played well the last two games, especially against Spruce Grove,” said Cam Gotaas of the Kodiaks. “We played a full 60 minutes in both games and we want to keep that going and gain momentum going into the playoffs. It was a special night (Joe Colborne sweater retirement and alumni coming back); it was great to give him a game like that.” The Kodiaks were the workhorses as they out shot the Mustangs 43-25. Devin McDonald earned the shut out with 25 saves. Calgary goalie Ravi Dattani made 40 of 43 saves as both goalies were named the stars of the game. The Spruce Grove Saints were hanging on to a 1-0 lead in the third period when the bears dug a little deeper. Scott Ferguson and Ryan Huolt scored

about a minute a part to lift Camrose to victory on Joe Colborne night in front of about 1,770 fans. Spruce Grove may have out shot the Kodiaks 38-28, but Camrose scored twice in the third on only six shots against the top team in the league. “They are a great and we have a lot of respect for them, but at the same
time we knew we could beat them,” said Cam. “It was a matter of believing in our systems. If we keep it going, it will mean nothing but good things for us. We want to keep the momentum going, that’s the goal.” McDonald turned away 37 of 38 shots to give the home team a chance to win the evenly played match, despite the shot count.
The Kodiaks worked hard for the two victories and at least one player was recognized for his efforts. Cam was selected as one of the finalists for the Don McNabb Memorial Trophy as the Most Dedicated Player in the league. “I approach each game as a new one and you have to prove yourself each time out there,” added Cam. “If
we work hard every day, execute our systems I think we should be good.” His hard work has caught on with his teammates. “It’s an honour to be nominated for an award. The other players nominated are very good players, so just to be nominated is an honour. I just thank my teammates and coaches because without them this nomination wouldn’t be possible,” said a humble Cam. “It means a lot and is a huge honour. I pride myself on working hard.” Cam wants to remain a hard working bear. “I want to come back next year and play here. You never know what the future has in store, but right now my goal is to come back,” he said. Cam was named a finalist along with Austin McDonald of Lloydminster, Joel Herbert of Whitecourt and Anthony Paskaruk of Brooks. Former Kodiaks coach Garry VanHereweghe was nominated as coach of the year with the Lloydminster Blazers. Bear facts
Camrose has two home games left in the regular season. They are on Feb. 23 against the Canucks at 2 p.m. then have a 7 p.m. start against their bear cousins, the Olds Grizzlys on Feb. 28. The playoffs begin in early March.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Chic Gamine will be launching a western Canadian tour just in time to perform at the Bailey Theatre in the Rose City Roots Music Society series on Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. This four girls and a guy ’60s group offers wall-of-sound harmonies similar to Motown music, but with a twist of English and French pop. The band rotates all four lead singers with the constant Montreal drummer and percussionist Sacha Daoud backing them up.
Chic Gamine was formed back in 2007 by three Winnipeg-based friends and former bandmates Ariane Jean, Andrina Turenne and Annick Bremault. They added a fourth singer, Winnipegger Alexa Dirks, and a male drummer to round out their sound. The Canadian harmonies began to show traces of Daoud’s Brazilian roots with the irresistible vocal hook of rhythm and blues. Continued on page 39

Jazz in Schools returns By Murray Green
Karl Schwonik’s popular Jazz in Schools program for 2014 will be making its debut at Chester Ronning School in Camrose 1 p.m. on March 3. “Our annual tour brings ‘Jazz Edutainment’ to thousands of rural students across Alberta,” said nationally acclaimed jazz musician Karl. “We want children to learn music, while having fun.” Instructors for the school program will be James Davis on trumpet, Chris Andrew on piano, Kodi Hutchinson on bass and Karl on drums. This year’s tour includes eight stops. The group will also be visiting the Allan Johnston School in Hardisty on March 5. “After this year we will have visited over 65 rural Alberta schools and given the presentation to well over 8,000 students. We call the presentation ‘edutainment’ and it is really set up to be a fun and interactive time for everyone in attendance,” said Karl, prior to leaving for Toronto on his eastern Canadian tour. “This year’s theme is teamwork. Our presentation will centre around teamwork as it pertains to music, jazz, problem solving and playing together as a band.” Karl talks about bringing solo sounds together to form a full band sound. His group, with regular band member Brent Mah on saxophone, is currently on a twoweek tour that includes stops in Halifax, Montreal, New York, Toronto, Seattle and Vancouver before launching the school program. Karl is the president and artistic director of the Wetaskiwin Jazz Society that conducts a music camp every summer. The sixth annual camp goes from July 6 to 11 in Wetaskiwin. The special guest artist this year is Juno-nominated vocalist Karin Plato from Vancouver. New this year will be an after-work singers workshop for adults. Juno winning Chic Gamine at Bailey Continued from page 32 Chic Gamine mixes these elements into a raw ’60s energy of music without a lot of noise from overpowering instruments. Give these girls simple instruments and they will let their strong vocals take over. They have turned the harmonies into a spot at the Olympics and some Juno awards. Chic Gamine found instant following when audiences went wild. Highlights include opening for Motown Great, Smokey Robinson, and playing in a lineup featuring the legendary Mavis Staples. The self-titled Canadi-
an debut went on to win a Juno award for Best Roots Album of 2009. Chic Gamine performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Also in 2010, they were rewarded with a second Juno nomination, also for Roots Album of the Year. The next year was spent touring intensely, playing United States and Canadian music festivals. Chic Gamine (which translates roughly as stylish mischievous young thing) will tease and tempt you with a fresh new sound. Tickets for the show will be available at the door.
