Hot off the heels of the Sochi Olympics, but on a much smaller scale,

Special Olympics Camrose athletes are pumped! They’re ready to challenge for fun – and compete for bronze, silver and gold medals. Camrose-based athletes will compete (or have already competed) this winter in 5-pin bowling, swimming, and basketball. This summer our local athletes will face fellow competitors in softball. Canada Safeway, as usual, has willingly stepped up to provide assistance to the Special Olympics program. Special Olympics athletes and others will be at the Camrose Safeway, (and Safeway stores throughout the province) March 15 and 16 to raise awareness of their sports program. Stop by the table and fill your heart with joy as you hear and witness Special Olympics athletes talk about their favourite sporting activities and memories from competition.

Alberta government pushes for better rail service for producers By Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development

It has been a challenging few months for Alberta’s agriculture community. At a time when we should be reaping the rewards of one of the best crops in recent memory, it has been a struggle just to get our products to market. Elevators and farmyard bins across this province are filled to the rafters. Meanwhile, ships are lined up at west coast ports, waiting for railcars to bring enough grain to fill empty cargo holds. Verlyn Olson Canada’s railway network is a federal responsibility. Alberta is fully supportive of the federal government introducing legislative changes that would make the system more accountable through direct and immediate penalties for whichever part of the system is responsible for the backlog, including inadequate rail service. While this year’s bumper harvest was exceptional, it has exposed some weaknesses in Canada’s grain-handling transportation system that must be fixed. One of the major flaws is the uneven distribution of financial accountability within the current system. Unlike producers and grain companies, railways don’t face immediate penalties when they fail to meet their graindelivery commitments. That needs to change. The vast majority of grain elevators are served by only one railway. This monopoly means there is no competitive incentive for the rail companies to improve service. We are also encouraging producers facing cash-flow challenges to access programs, like the federal Advance Payment Program and AgriInvest, to help address expenses while they are waiting for their grain to get to market. We know there are a lot of contributing factors to the current transportation backlog, which is affecting our agriculture sector. There is a lot of coffee shop talk about these issues being caused by the movement of oil and the Canadian Wheat Board transition, when in fact oil is moved at a significantly smaller percentage in comparison to grain, and there were complaints about rail service when the single desk marketing monopoly was in place as evidenced by the last Rail Freight Service Review that started in 2008. It should also be noted that other commodities, such as lumber and oil, are suffering from the same problems. This isn’t just an agricultural issue. While work is underway by the western Canadian provinces, the federal government and industry to develop longterm strategies to improve the movement of goods, legislating greater financial accountability in the rail system is one meaningful change that will yield more immediate results. Market access is a top priority for Alberta. Our reputation as a world-class supplier of food, energy and other exports is at risk if we are unable to meet the needs of our customers in a timely fashion. It is imperative that appropriate steps are taken to improve the efficiency of our rail transportation network. The status quo is not an option.

Brent Gotaas, right, was the first winner of the 2014 Rotary Cares raffle. Presenting Brent with a cheque for $1,000 was Rotarian Keith Carlson, who sold the winning ticket. Brent’s ticket goes back into the barrel for the remaining monthly draws. The Rotary Club of Camrose will soon be selling tickets for its Black Tie Gala fundraiser, set for May 3. Watch for more details.

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Trip expenses I saw an online article written by Bill Graveland in the The Canadian Press. The headline of the article read something like this. “Alison Redford apologizes for Mandela trip cost – but still won’t pay it back.” My first reaction to this headline was, “You got to be kidding!” The reason why I said that was because of what she said to the media after a school funding announcement in Calgary to reporters. “From my perspective this was a trip that was part of the Canadian delegation. It was business of the government of Alberta and I attended on that basis. I certainly take responsibility for the processes within place and I do apologize for that.” She also said that, “Mistakes were made. I accept responsibility for that and I apologize.” According to the article, the premier and her aide took a provincial government plane to Ottawa at a cost of $15,000 to catch a free flight with Harper to South Africa. Then after that she and an aide flew home early on a commercial flight at a cost of $10,000 each to attend the swearing-in of her new cabinet. The article also stated that opposition leaders have noted that Nova Scotia premier Stephen McNeil billed their taxpayers less than $1,000 to go to the funeral. This action seems to me that this premier does not care about the amount of tax dollars that she spends for her own convenience. Now, this might be my own opinion, and I might be alone in thinking this but here it goes. If I were the premier, and I said that I took responsibility for spending an unacceptable amount of taxpayer’s money, it would make sense that at least the majority of the money should be paid back. The swearing-in of the new cabinet could have waited. It was not a life and death situation. It was more

convenience. If Nova Scotia’s premier could do it for under $1,000 then our premier could have done the same trip for the same amount of money. It seems to me that taxpayers should not have to be punished for their government’s mistakes. I do wonder if those were real mistakes or just another Redford cover up? When the next election comes around; I do wonder if the average voter will decide to put Redford back in or they will show her the door? The choice is up to the voters. I know what I will do. I do wonder what your choice will be? Only time will tell. Lorne W.P Vandewoude Camrose Bailey needs support I am very sorry and concerned to read about the Bailey Theatre’s problems with funding. It is important for a vibrant community. It is still relatively recent since the restoration and reopening of the theatre and things in the arts can take a while to get sustainable. I live in Edmonton and have traveled several times to a concert at the Bailey, even coming early for dinner and staying overnight in a hotel. This wonderful theatre is a big draw for the community and needs support. Janice Manuel Edmonton Music festival Music festivals across Canada offer many opportunities for young performers. I am writing to encourage the people of Camrose to support our local festival coming up in March. The Camrose and District Music Festival has had a major influence on my life since I was eight years old. As someone who loves to perform, the festival has provided me with a great opportunity to perform at a young age. I have been performing as a vocal soloist in numerous categories, band participant, and choral member for eight years. Participating in the festival has given me a number of opportunities over the years and has resulted in improved performances and personal growth. Performing, in front of an adjudicator you have never met, challenges you to deliver the best performance you can. Every year, I look forward to the learning opportunities festival provides me. The festival adjudicators are very talented in their fields and have a lot of advice they are willing to share. I use the recommendations and knowledge the adjudi-

cator gives me to improve my current selections. My music teachers also take the recommendations from festival and help me (us) apply them in the future. Many times, the adjudicator has provided a mini-workshop during the adjudication process to make sure I (we) understand what he /she is saying. Taking constructive criticism is often difficult. We are so caught up in “being the best,” that it can be challenging to be told that you may not be. I have learned to appreciate the good and bad of adjudication. Although it makes me smile when I hear I (we) did something right, it’s also nice to know how I (we) can do better. I have been fortunate to be nominated to the Provincial Music Festival through the adjudicators at my local festival. Attending provincials is a great honor. It is a privilege to represent Camrose and watch performers from all over Alberta. The adjudicators at provincials are amazing and come from places like New York and Toronto. I have also been fortunate to be the recipient of Camrose Music Festival scholarships. The scholarships have helped me to attend music camps and increase my lessons. The festival is a very rewarding and exciting week. Please come out and support the performers this year! Everybody has worked really hard to ensure you will see his or her best performance. The festival runs March 24-28, 2014 with the Grand Concert on March 29. You can see performances in vocal solos, musical theater, choral, band, instrumental, piano, dance, and speech arts. Watch the papers for venues and schedules! The festival happens because of donations and volunteers. On behalf of festival participants, I thank you! Your generosity and support of festival has had a profound impact on my life. If you are interested in volunteering or donating to the festival, please contact Cathy Kennedy at 780-6790122 for more information. Thank-you, Gracie Yelland Music Festival participant

Enright duo lost by one in doubles provincial curling bonspiel By Murray Green The local curling doubles team of Adam Enright and Whitney Eckstrand reached the sixth game before being eliminated in the Alberta Mixed Doubles Provincials hosted by the Rose City Curling Club in Camrose from Feb. 14 to 17. Enright and Eckstrand were knocked out 8-7 by the Flory-Brown team which lost to the champion Makichuk-Leach team in the final. The Enright-Eckstrand team beat Cornish-Stroeder 9-5, lost 8-5 to Tim Krassman and Vicki Sjolie, beat Goertzen-Kolody 8-7, defeated Keith-Keith 10-3 and dropped their opening game 7-6 to Ludwar-Kuny. Parents want to take another look at the approach taken with education By Murray Green Alberta’s standing in education among developed countries is steadily falling. Calmar mother Dr. Nhung Tran Davies started an Alberta math petition, that is gaining momentum throughout the Camrose region, to improve Alberta’s math curriculum. She has about 5,000 on-line signatures. The mother of three started the petition at www.change.org asking education minister Jeff Johnson, a former Camrose resident, for curriculum changes for the next school term. “The number of signatures from around the province is growing daily. It is a deeply troubling reflection of the poor state of the new math curriculum,” said Dr. TranDavies. “We hope that the minister will demonstrate the leadership necessary to re-orient the curriculum away from the use of multiple convoluted strategies. The petitioners want to refocus students on mastering fundamental, core math skills such

as memorizing the time tables, doing vertical addition/subtractions, and long division.” At the end of January Tran-Davies and other representatives of the petitioners met with deputy minister Greg Bass and the Alberta Education math team to discuss the concerns. Former minister of education Dave Hancock launched a steering committee that produced Inspiring Education, A dialogue with Alberta. The committee appointed MLAs, a lawyer, a special needs teacher, a doctor, a physics teacher, an economist and a president from an arts college. But no mathematicians were appointed to the committee. In a follow up letter, Bass committed Alberta Education to sending a clarification to parents, teachers and administrators for the 2014-15 school year, but offered no substantive change. He insisted that immediate changes to the new math curriculum were not necessary. However, 5,000 petitioners believe

otherwise. Alberta has dropped 30 points in the international math exam results and sits 100 points below the top country. “As people describe their own or their family’s struggles with the new curriculum a few common themes are clear. Students are frustrated by confusing and poorly thought out curriculum materials, and have developed an aversion to math,” she said about the comments received online. “Parents are enduring financial hardship to pay for tutoring to provide math basics that used to be provided in schools. Educators are concerned that their students are not well-served by new math and find in upper grades that students simply don’t have the basic skills to do higher math.” Under the new math program children are discouraged from memorizing the times tables, and are required to learn multiple invented strategies (one of which is guessing) for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, rather than the stan-

dard, traditional operations used and recognized around the world as the most efficient and effective approach. Students are also encouraged to use calculators at an early age, for any math operations involving more than two digits. Manitoba reintroduced basic math skills last year in response to similar concerns from parents and educators. Further information can be obtained at www.wisemath.org. “People who want to sign the petition can go to www.change.org and search for Alberta mathematics,” said Dr. Tran Davies. “This story comes from a person who signed the petition. At the meeting, a parent/substitute teacher gave an example of a problem that stayed on the table for 30 minutes because the children were expected to provide four different solutions to this problem, rather then one simple answer. The question was: there are 72 balloons and nine clowns. How many balloons would each clown receive?”

Dr. Tran Davies had a similar experience at home. “I was stunned when I sat down with my 13- year-old daughter and asked her to solve a problem with 84 cows eating a third of a bale of hay each. How many bales of hay would the farmer need? She started drawing pictures of 84 cows,” she said. Inspiring Education believes that the educated Albertan of 2030 should demonstrate, or be able to know how to learn, think critically, identify and solve problems, manage information, innovate, create opportunities, apply multiple literacies, demonstrate good communication, demonstrate global understanding, and identify and apply career and life skills. The almost 5,000 Albertans who have already signed Nhung’s petition, however, maintain that Alberta Education must insist that our students, the Albertans of 2030, must also have mastered core math skills in order to equip them for success in everyday life.

Augustana mixed curling team collects silver medals in finals By Murray Green

The ACAC provincials were played in Vermilion and hosted by Lakeland College on Feb. 21 to 23. Augustana mixed team came within one point of defending their gold medals from last year. Despite winning four games and losing one game by a single point, the Vikings had to settle for silver medals. Augustana defeated Lakeland, Olds and NAIT in the opening round. In the battle to advance to the final, the Vikings doubled Olds 6-3. In the rematch for gold medals, Olds edged Augustana 6-5. “The mixed team played solid all the way through provincials. At the start of the season they were a team in progress,” said coach Roger Galenza. “The team was 5-5 heading into the weekend and then sweep the round robin at provincials. They improved a lot and were within one shot, the last shot, of a gold medal. With four medals in four years, it was very positive for Augustana curling.” In the men’s competition, Augustana ended up in a three way tie for second after the opening round. After the math was done, the Vikings were placed in the fourth seed and lost 7-3 to Grant MacEwan to send them to the bronze medal side. In a rematch, MacEwan again won 6-4 to shut the Vikings out of the medal round. “The top three teams were very strong. We were there also. In the first game we beat Portage, who ended up earning the gold medal,” said Roger. “In the bronze match they played well, but again the other team won it on the last shot.” Men’s team second Wyatt Warawa was named to the ACAC all-conference curling team. Despite Augustana winning the silver medals, the Vikings were shut out of the mixed all-conference list. The women’s team ended up at provincials as well. “It all started in the first bonspiel here when we lost the plant. We ended up not playing a team. When we went

to the regionals the Portage ladies dropped out and it was an unbalanced schedule. We played Grande Prairie in a tie-breaker and we were out. Meantime, Grande Prairie was suspended for using an unregistered player, so they had to forfeit all of their wins,” explained Roger. “We were given the win in the tie-breaker, but it didn’t matter because it was like the game didn’t take place. Now NAIT, Red Deer and us were at 6-4 and a tie-breaker situation occurred again. Both Red Deer and Augustana appealed the decision and asked for a five team playoff.” The Vikings lost three games by one point and another by two points to be eliminated. The NAIT game went into an extra end. “I was glad the girls got to go because it was a valuable learning experience. All four will be back next year, so this team will be stronger next season.” Volleyball

The Augustana Vikings men’s volleyball team knocked off the Medicine Hat Rattlers in the first round of the playoffs. Augustana finished the regular season as the fifth ranked team in the province. They moved up a spot by beating the Rattlers in four games. Luke Ryan garnered 11 kills and Thomas Regier came up with 21 digs to lead the Vikings. The prize for winning the first round match was a date with the top ranked Red Deer Kings. Ryan added five kills and Regier counted four digs as the defending champions won in three games to send the Vikings to the bronze medal match. SAIT maintained their third spot by grabbing the bronze medals. Ryan earned nine kills and 14 digs in the loss. Both Ryan and Cole McCartney were named to the second team all-conference squad. Catherine Laskosky of the women’s team also was selected to the second team all-conference team.

Percentage marks kept for high school grades By Murray Green

The voices of the students in the Battle River School Division (BRSD) have finally been heard. For about three years students and parents have been concerned about the implementation of Administrative Procedure 360 (AP360) at several high schools in the region. Another large contingent of students and parents approached the board two weeks ago in a last ditch effort to deter the board from eliminating percentage marks. Students feared losing spots in colleges and university because they wouldn’t have had a clear mark during the registration process. Trustee Tracey Boast Radley sided with the overwhelming concerns expressed when she made the motion at the board meeting on Feb. 27. “I move that the board directs the superintendent to make recommendations by March 20, to address the assessment issues identified by students, community and staff. In doing so, the superintendent shall give consideration to the feasibility of eliminating the requirement for alpha grades at the high school level and ensure students are provided with numeric marks on a con-

sistent basis. The superintendent’s recommendations shall address any action the board should take immediately and also any proposed longer term solutions.” The motion stops the advancement and further implementation of AP360 at the high school level. The system will be used from kindergarten to Grade 9 only. “We met after the student presentation and drafted motions from the policy committee to address the concerns because we don’t want the communities to be upset. We understand their frustrations. We are dealing with the motions and the acting superintendent will be bringing back recommendations at the March 20 meeting,” said BRSD chair Kendall Severson. “It’s exciting (to listen to the students) because that is part of the education minister’s engaging communities. This is showing community engagement as far as I’m concerned.” However, it took some time for the board to respond to the concerns. “Trustees knew when they signed up for the election that this was going to be on the agenda,” said Severson. “We are hearing student’s concerns about gaining entrance to university and receiving Ruther-

ford scholarships. The last motion indicates that we are going to take a step back from implementation at the high school level. We want to work with parents and students to move forward. I want to know if the students know what they are supposed to know in the elementary grades. As far as I know this system (AP360) is used up to the junior high level in other school regions, but not at the high school level.” Severson said they are working towards the Inspiring Education model. “We are looking at 21st century learning and things are changing all of the time. We are trying to make sure we are on par with the minister. Unfortunately, this (AP360) has become a distraction to

School and the Grade 9 students will move back to the Camrose Composite High School in a realignment process the board is undertaking this year. “CCHS has so much to offer to Grade 9 students, it’s amazing,” said Lorrie Sitler, deputy chair of the BRSD board of trustees at

the Feb. 27 meeting. “If we are going to move the Grade 6 classes to Charlie Killam then we should look at having an open house for those students who are going to be moving.” She backed the motion of moving both the Grade 9 students to the high school in Camrose to receive full advantage of the facility,

Kendall Severson

all of the good things that are happening in the schools.” Wildrose education critic Bruce McAllister applauded the BRSD for reversing its decision with regard to highschool student assessment and is urging the PC government to steer clear of ineffective assessment models as they revisit curriculums. “We applaud elected officials of the BRSD for listening to students, parents and teachers and reversing the changes to the student assessment structure,” McAllister said. “After immense pressure, the school board is putting a halt to numeric grade system and returning to percentage grades in high schools. This decision only came about because students and parents would not accept these provincially pushed changes to the assessment model.” Under the recent assess-

ment model students would receive a mark of beginning, developing, achieving or excelling. A student who received a mark between zero and 49 per cent would be at the ‘beginning’ level. A student who scored between 50 and 66 per cent would be at the ‘developing’ level, ‘achieving’ would be between 67 and 83 per cent and ‘excelling’ from 84 to 100 per cent. Students, parents and teachers had voiced concerns about the assessment changes. “It is no secret that the Alberta government is pushing radical changes to curriculum and assessment practices in Alberta,” McAllister added. “We don’t need the provincial government pushing curriculum and assessment models that parents, teachers and students do not want.”

Students wanted to know percentages to pursue higher education opportunities.

BRSD trustees realign students to fill classrooms By Murray Green

The Battle River School Division will be moving grades around to different schools to make better use of all the space and to meet the demands of population growth. Starting next fall all of the Grade 6 classes will be taught at the Charlie Killam

and the motion to bring all the Grade 6 students to one school. Trustees talked about having a transition year, but Tracey Boast Radley said it would be best for the students and parents if it was done right away. “I don’t want to keep changing,” she said.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

First Camrose Girls Guides leader Julia Bessette and the rest of the leaders and girl guides presented Camrose Women’s Shelter Society outreach coordinator Anita Wishart (right side of quilt) with a quilt made by all of the girls to celebrate the 100th anniversary of girl guiding. The leaders taught the girls how to quilt last fall. The leaders are Julia Bessette, Alicia Maedel, Bekki Bootsman and Karen Koehli-Kozak. The girl guides are Taryn Beattie, Sammantha Bell, Kaylee Booth, Kathleen Clark, Elizabeth Donahue, Emily Donahue, Grace Ginther, Trinity Grant, Grace Hurlbert, Brogan Kelly, Caris Kelly, Ashley Keown, Gloria Lindberg, Delaney Lorente, Taryn Maschke, Hailley Miller, Abby Padilla, Malia Patullo, Allyson Sharp and Annika Tigchelaar. Missing is Drew Biletski, Sydney Friesen, Alana Moores and Kaitlyn Rose.

The board discussed the idea of having a separate bell system for the Grade 9 students and the rest of the high school. “The wings at CCHS are too large to separate the students. If I was the administrator I would want to incorporate the students with the rest of the high school as soon as possible, so the students don’t feel segregated,” deputy superintendent Rick Jarrett said. “It’s important that all students are integrated so they feel part of the school,” added Sitler. An open house at the CCHS for current Grade 8 students was also discussed. Chair Kendall Severson had some reservations of 610 Charlie Killam School students using one gym. Currently some students go to Sifton School for gym class. The realignment process was passed with only one trustee opposed. Moving the Grade 6 students without sending the Grade 9 students to the high school was an option the trustees didn’t want to see happen. Over the last few years, BRSD has experienced changes in numbers because the City of Camrose has had more younger students than older students enrolled in local schools. Some schools are crowded, while and others are not as neighborhoods grow and change.

Life can change your tax situation For some Canadians, the year 2013 was a time of big changes. They may have gotten married or welcomed a new baby. Or perhaps one of their parents needed a fulltime caregiver. If you experienced a life change last year, taxes are probably the last thing on your mind but all of these situations can impact your return. Most Canadians have their tax deductions collected by their employer. Employers calculate the amount of deductions based on the information provided by an employee on a TD1 Form. It is quite common for employees to fill out only one TD1 Form and never update it when their tax situation changes. It is important to remember changes in your life impact how much tax is withheld. Although it is always nice to get a tax refund, it is even better not to pay the money to the government in the first place. If you get married or have children, your situation has changed. You should ask your payroll or human resources department for a new TD1 Form. The updated information should be used to recal-

culate the amount of tax withheld. Or if you are eligible for a new tax credit, you could also need to fill out a new TD1 Form. It can make a difference. For example, the Child Tax Credit is based on $2,234 for each child born in 1995 or later. If you qualify for the benefit, filling out a revised TD1 may result in slightly less tax being withheld by your employer. Have you had any life changes in the last few months? Are you a single parent with a child who turned 18 last year? Did you get married? Is your spouse earning significantly more income this year? Did your spouse quit a job to stay at home with the children? Are you caring for an elderly parent? It could be a good time to consult a tax professional to make sure you have the right amount of tax being withheld. A tax professional at H&R Block can talk about other credits and deductions that may affect you. To find the office nearest you, visit www.hrblock.ca or call us at 1-800-561-2154.

Goalie McDonald named AJHL player of the week By Murray Green Camrose Kodiaks goalie Devin McDonald was selected as the Alberta Junior Hockey League player of the week after a 4-0 shut out over the Calgary Canucks on Feb. 23 and a 3-0 shut out against the Calgary Mustangs on Feb. 17. Devin stopped all 29 shots he faced against the Canucks to keep the Kodiaks ahead of the Canmore Eagles in the standings. “It was pretty cool (to be named player of the week), but over all the team kept the opposing players to the outside and they let me do my job. They made my life a little easier because when you can see the puck you have a better chance of stopping it,” said Devin. “I can’t take credit for the shut outs because it is a team game and in both games it was a strong team defence that was played. I did whatever I could to help the team win. The important thing is we got four points in those two games.” The goalie is in a groove as the playoffs approach. “You get into a rhythm and the puck goes to where you want it to and the rebounds are good,” explained Devin. “You seem to see through

screens well and the rebounds are popping off of you and you have a little luck going for you too.”

Camrose will be in a battle with Canmore for the home advantage in the playoffs that will likely see the

two clubs matched against each other. “I just want to keep it going, but I try not to over think the situation. I’m pretty superstitious, so what ever is working it what I go with,” joked Devin. “Those games are over now and don’t mean anything. The rest of the season and playoffs is what matters now. We’re looking for that championship and I want to keep calm.” Staying focused on the prize is what the Kodiaks are working on. “If we play solid defensively we do well. If we get iffy calls go against us, we have to focus and not take penalties,” he added. “We can’t control what the refs are going to call, so we play well and do what we have to do. We have good penalty killing units so that helps as well.” Devin likes to play in the EnCana Arena. “Home ice is huge. We are on a good roll at home and Canmore is good at home as well, so having home ice becomes important if it reaches to a fifth game. We are confident at home with a good fan base.” Brett Njaa scored the game winner eight minutes into the game. In the second, Riley Griffith and Cam Gotaas garnered the tallies.

Jody Sick scored on a power play opportunity in the third to complete the scoring. Game star Dallas Bergstrom picked up two assists in the contest. Camrose fired 42 shots at the Canucks including 20 in the second frame. The Kodiaks met a determined Brooks Bandits club on Feb. 21. Brooks won 4-1 to clinch first place in the south division that also secured home advantage in the playoffs. Nick Harder netted an unassisted marker in the first period, but it didn’t hold up as the Bandits raided the Kodiaks’ net and blasted netminder Matt Zentner with 33 shots. The loss snapped the Kodiaks previous four game winning streak. Bear facts The playoffs begin March 6 and 7 for the Kodiaks at home. Camrose received home advantage over the Canmore Eagles in the first round. The Kodiaks will play away on March 9 and 10. The fifth game, if needed, is slated for March 12 at the EnCana Arena. All games will have a 7 p.m. start.

The folk, gospel and blues entertainer Steve Palmer will be performing at the Camrose United Church on March 8. He likes to share his stories from travelling around the world along with his music.

Folk singing Palmer returns

5210-51 Avenue, Camrose

Steven Palmer was raised on gospel, country and the blues. The old time influences on a young prairie picker with a love of Doc Watson made him a good fit for psychedelic folk-rock touring bands and playing support for most of the big name artists during the 1960s British invasion. The folk musician is coming back for a concert at Camrose United Church on Saturday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. Palmer became a guitaristfor-hire in country bands working the rural Alberta bar scene. He started using his voice only in the ’80s, when he’d picked some west-coast time to study music a bit more formally. But it wasn’t until he returned home to care for his mother that he found personal respite and freedom in becoming a solo performer. Now based in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, he travels a troubadour circuit around Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. Forty years as a traveling musician is a lot of road, and Palmer is still playing. Grown enough to sing about life and simple pleasures with all the unhurried authority of a quiet and simple folk-singing roadsurvivor. Sometimes compared to Hoyt Axton, Leonard Cohen, or John Prine, the echoes of Doc Watson remain clear on his three albums. Palmer entertains with his superb guitar playing, enjoys singing with the crowd and shares funny stories that will put you on the edge of your seat. The entertainer gives a percentage of receipts to the church to help local communities throughout his travels. Tickets are available at the United Church office on 482950 Street and at the door.

Community band performs at Augustana Submitted

The Camrose Community Band won the Lions Rose Bowl award at the 2012 Camrose and District Music Festival.

On Sunday, March 9, the Camrose and District Community Band, under the direction of Tom Spila, will perform a concert at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus in Camrose. The concert, held in the Faith and Life Chapel, begins at 2 p.m. and there will be a silver collection at the door. The Band will perform a variety of selections, from standard concert band literature and marches to jazz and movie themes. The Camrose and District Community Band was formed in 1983. It was started by a group of 26 interested local musicians, under the guidance of Mr. Spila, for the purpose of providing a recreational adult band for the community. Camrose has always been an active area musically, going back to the days of the Rose City Band in the 1960s. The formation of the Camrose and District Community Band allowed former Rose City Band members, former school players and interested beginners to join in an enjoyable evening of music every week, and to acquire and improve skills many thought were long gone. The focus of the band is educational, but the group also provides a wonderful social outlet: members thrive musically and make new acquaintances at the same time. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 and in fact, has ranged from 18 to over 90 years. The business of the band is handled by an elected executive with help from various committees. The band’s repertoire consists of a wide variety of styles. Performances include local trades shows and events, public concerts and festivals. Membership has grown to over 60 and includes people from all walks of life. For many years now Augustana students with past band experience have been able to join in the band as full members while receiving university credit for their work. This year’s concert program will feature several of them performing in a clarinet ensemble. The group rehearses Tuesday evenings at the Camrose Composite High School and is directed by Mr. Spila with assistance from Robert (Bob) Bailey, R.J. (Bob) Wilson and Norman Skretting. The season runs from late September to early June. The band welcomes all newcomers so if you are interested, come out to the concert and feel free to talk to members of the band, the director, or his assistants. Call 780-672-1051 for further information.

Mowat climbs Empire State Building to fight cancer By Murray Green

Camrose area runner Cathy Mowat and her sister Lori Hansen reached the top of the New York Empire State Building. They participated in the 37th annual Run Up on Feb. 5 in New York City in memory of their dad Neil Hansen and to raise money for Multiple Myeloma (cancer) Research Foundation, (MMRF). “The support of the community through phone calls, emails and donations was overwhelming,” said Cathy. “Thanks to the support of family, friends and our community, my sister Lori and I raised $6,845 for multiple myeloma cancer research. It was amazing to be part of this event and to run in memory of our dad Neil.” Not only did the sisters complete the climb, but they attended a special show. “We went to the LIVE with Kelly and Michael show the day following the race because I found out about the race when I saw Kelly Ripa participate in it last year. I was chosen to be the Go Go Trivia dancer and I also got to meet the guest that day, which was George Clooney. I was living the dream.” More than 400 athletes from around the world charged to the top of New York’s most iconic building in the 37th Run-Up. The event gave these runners a gut-busting, lung-searing workout on a day when yet another snowfall blanketed NYC and thwarted the routines of many. Though the weather also put the kibosh on the traditional outdoor finish on the observation deck, spirits remained sky-high on the 86th floor, 1,576 steps above the start in the building’s stunning Art Deco lobby. Finishers celebrated with cheers, hugs and highfives as they basked in their accomplishments nearly a quarter-mile above the Midtown Manhattan streets. This year’s Run-Up included 183 runners who raised funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) and 59 members of Team for Kids (TFK) who ran in support of NYRR youth programs. Cathy and Lori were part of the MMRF team. It included six people who have multiple myeloma, and they raised more than $800,000 for research and treatment to extend the lives of multiple

and incurable disease called amyloidosis. As this was such a rare disease there were few case studies for comparison,” shared Cathy. Through Cathy’s and the group’s efforts they now have more funds for research.

By Murray Green The Augustana Vikings women’s basketball team beat the SAIT Trojans 71-66 in the first round of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships in Olds on Feb. 28 to March 2. Taryn Story led the charge with 19 points and Sydney Purdy chipped in with 14 in the huge game for the Vikings. Augustana made the final four and then beat NAIT in the second round contest of the championships. In the final match, the Vikings lost to Grant MacEwan. Both Kari Kubinec and Taryn Story made the second all-conference team in the north. Hockey The Augustana Vikings grabbed four points from Portage in a two-game series on Feb. 21 and 22. Augustana won 4-2 and 5-1. “We didn’t win in a while because of the break in the schedule, but they were two of our better

games because we had all four lines going, said Scott Aucion. “It was a total team effort and everyone bought into playing hard. We know we can play like that. We outshot them by quite a bit and that was one of our goals going into the series. We want a total team effort and high intensity before we hit playoffs. A lot of players recorded a single point. “It’s very important to get everyone’s confidence higher and that they know they are capable of getting it done, added Scott. “For who are not having as good of a year, it’s good for them to get back the confidence. The Vikings were still seeking third place as the teams finalize playoff match-ups. “We could be playing Concordia or Portage in the first round. Portage is playing Red Deer and we need them to beat them. It doesn’t matter who we face, but MacEwan has had our number this year

so avoiding them would be nice, shared Scott. “We want to keep the good habits going into the playoffs. Scott is in second place in the career scoring list with 176 points over his fiveyear tenure on the Vikings. His total was prior to the final regular season series against the Concordia Thunder. “I didn’t expect it (scoring) when I first came here, but I have played with some pretty good teammates over the last few years. It doesn’t mean a lot, but it is kind of cool knowing I have played with some special players, said Scott. “I avoided injury for the most part, only some minor injuries. Gus (coach Blaine Gusdal) has given lots of playing time and I’ve been fortunate. The Vikings passed Red Deer in the standings and now host Portge in the playoffs. Home games in Camrose will be on March 5 and 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Schoenberg and modern music The work of a triad of early 20th century Austrian composers – Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern – forever changed our musical landscape. Schoenberg, the central figure of this group, is still widely regarded as the “boogeyman of modern music, even though he has been dead for over 60 years; his harshly dissonant, atonal music is considered by some to be the death knell of traditional classical music. It is also the case, however, that Schoenberg was among the most influential composers, theorists and teachers of the last century, and even though he was a “modernist, he also insisted that he was a “conservative revolutionary, and that modern music, to be truly meaningful, must strive to say new things while remaining connected to and rooted in the past. This year marks the 140th birthday of Schoenberg. Born in Vienna in 1874, Schoenberg came of age in Europe’s musical city – the home of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms and Mahler, among many others – during a turbulent period of crisis and change. The turn of the century heralded the twilight of the Hapsburg Empire and was marked by political instability, religious and ethnic tension, and a generalized anxiety about the future. As a consequence, it was also a time of radical artistic and intellectual activity. Schoenberg’s Vienna was also Freud’s Vienna, and the city’s slow-boiling psycho-social unrest made a lasting mark on its culture. Traditional and convention were suddenly at odds with the new rebellious, secessionist attitudes of Schoenberg’s generation, and this clash of values gave rise to new art that was intensely personal and relentlessly, unflinchingly

expressive of the darker sides of human nature. In music, the sound-world of Mozart operas and Strauss waltzes gave way to shockingly new music that seemed to abandon the most basic laws of composition—key, chords, melody, harmony—in favor of an intuitive approach

Second Thought

By Alex Carpenter Music, Department of Fine Arts and Humanities Augustana Faculty University of Alberta

that sought to investigate and express the disturbing realties of the traumatized modern psyche. In Vienna in the early decades of the 20th century, the atonal music of the Second Viennese School composers sparked riots in the concert halls, and Schoenberg and his followers were derided in the press for creating music that was “hideous and “cacophonous: music without “joy or light. For these composers, however, atonal music was simply the next step on an evolutionary path. The music of the 19th century had become increasingly rich in its harmonic language, so much so that the bonds of tonality – the relationships that place notes and chords into a functional and perceivable hierar-

chy – were already profoundly weakened before Schoenberg and his school came along: atonality was the next logical step. For these composers, modern, atonal music was simply the natural consequence of what had been put into motion long ago by the great composers of the past. Today, I continue to be struck by this music. To my ears, it is not radical; rather, what is shocking about it is the fact that it still sounds so fresh, that its combinations of colours and pitches still sound new, that a century later it can still challenge our senses and provoke and stimulate our imaginations. I rank Schoenberg, Berg and Webern among the cultural heroes of the past century: they remained utterly faithful to the beauty and value of the great masterpieces of the past as they struggled to craft a meaningful modern language for music. During the week of March 17 to 21, Augustana will host a series of public events devoted to exploring and celebrating the legacy of the pivotal Second Viennese School through a range of activities, including: a film night featuring Alban Berg’s sex and murder-fuelled opera Lulu, with an introductory lecture by Dr. Christina Gier, assistant professor of music on our North Campus, a performance of short student compositions in the style of the Second Viennese School; a mini-symposium on the legacy of Schoenberg and his followers, featuring a keynote talk by musicologist Dr. Achilles Ziakris, an expert on the diffusion of Schoenberg’s ideas in post-war Europe; and a lecture-recital presentation on Schoenberg’s songs featuring Professor Deen Larsen, artistic director of the Schubert Institute near Vienna. All are welcome to attend.

February 16, 1961 – March 8, 2013 It’s been one year ago when I lay there beside you; Could you feel me there? My arms were wrapped around you, and I was stroking your hair. I was talking about all the good times; For me they were every single day. I wanted you to feel love and comfort, and happy in some way. I watched every breath; And prayed that each one wasn’t your last. The time we got to share together; Went by too quick … too fast. I wanted you to wake up; Please, Alan, open your eyes. Tell me this is a nightmare, and not our goodbyes. As your last breath grew closer; We lay there peacefully together. My heart continually breaking, because I wanted you forever. Then there it was, your final breath of air. I didn’t want to believe it; This is so cruel and not fair. I held your beautiful face, and prayed you’d breathe again. I wasn’t ready for you to go; I couldn’t admit that this was the end. But then I realized that you were now in peace; And not suffering anymore. You were beginning the life of an angel; And your body would no longer be sore. I held you close and squeezed you tight, And tried to say goodbye. I’ve lost my husband and my number one best friend; All my heart could do is cry. I slowly got up; I wanted so much to stay. I leaned over and gave you one more kiss; It was so hard to walk away. Alan, you are my entire world, and I miss you so very much. I wish I could feel your loveable cuddle, and your soft gentle touch. But for now I have to wait until we meet again. You will always be in my heart and thoughts, My dear husband and best friend. Always and forever, our hearts will always touch. Always and forever, we love you so much. Remembered always, Roxanne, Travis and Brooke

Jeep Cherokee

Mike Cuthbert By Dan Jensen

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler meets every road and trail with a strength of character that delivers ultimate all-weather conditions. "It's engineered to excel on any terrain with sophisticated, efficient skill," said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Noel Skoglund. Traction system Jeep Cherokee was able to earn the trail rated badge by successfully passing tests for traction (maintaining controlled forward motion on snowy back roads), articulation (when one or more wheels are elevated the Jeep 4x4 system helps the other wheels maintain ground clearance longer), maneuverability, ground clearance, and water fording. A Jeep Selec-Train traction system with up to five sure-footed modes: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and available Rock. Snow adjusts for ultimate performance over ice-covered roads by maximizing vehicle stability and minimizing oversteer. Major systems auto-engaged and managed in this mode include antilock brakes and traction control. Sand/Mud maximixes low-speed traction by allowing additional wheel slip via specifically tuned chassis controls, differential and transmission ratios

that are geared to successfully tackle snow and mud. Sport is the mode for those who feel like having a little more fun on winding country roads. Rock (available) delivers trail-rated 4WD Low capability thanks to its rear-differential locking element. This permits serious off-road maneuvering, allowing you to crawl over rugged terrain at appropriately safe speeds. Efficient and powerful Jeep Cherokee's classexclusive nine-speed automatic transmission is all about driving comfort, refinement, and efficiency. Shift modes are determined by intelligent software that monitors engine torque as well as kick-down, acceleration and road grade changes. The 2.4 litre Tigershark Multiar I-4 engine delivers impressive fuel economy – as low as 6.4 litres per 100 km highway – and arrives as standard issue in the allnew 2014 Cherokee. From its fully isolated aluminum head cover with an integrated oil separation system to its high-pressure, die-cast aluminum block, the new Tigershark engine was engineered to deliver a quiet and refined ride. Plus, for those with dreams of heading for aggressive off-road destinations, it takes its 184

horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque and crushes it down to a boulder-pounding crawl ratio of 56:1 when paired with the Jeep Active Drive Lock 4WD system on the Trail Rated Cherokee Trailhawk. The 3.2 litre Pentastar VVT engine is engineered for those who require efficient performance combined with strong muscle. Demanding drivers will appreciate its 271 hp, 239 lb.-ft. of torque and fuel efficiency as low as 7.0 litres per 100 km. Towing capacity for Jeep Cherokee with the 2.4 and 3.2 litre engines is 907 kg. The towing capacity for the 3.2 litre engine with the Trailer Tow Group is 2,041 kg. Interior Every sculpted inch of the all-new Jeep Cherokee interior has been thoughtfully designed to offer versatile convenience and absolute beauty. Choose from five luxurious interiors offered in sumptuous Nappa leather-faced trim or premium cloth. Soft-touch surfaces are always within reach, adding even more to Cherokee's upscale appeal. Options abound, including heated and ventilated front seating for added warmth and cooling, and a heated steering wheel for welcome relief in the cold of winter.

Choose from the available Cold Weather Group that packages chill-ending features together for one-stop shopping. When the temp takes a dive you'll stay safe and warm with the Cold Weather Group and its bundle of nicely packaged features. The remote start lets you preheat or precool the cabin. The windshield wiper de-icer helps maintain a clear view of the road ahead. The heated leatherwrapped steering wheel and heated front seats work to take the chill away, and all-weather floor mats offer protection from slushy footwear. Heated outside mirrors are also included. Convenience meets utility with a centre console that bears two cup holders that accept 355-ml cans and 1.5 litre bottles. Front-seat passengers access a side-saddle console cubby that can hold books and tablets. When the entire rear bench seat is folded you have a nearly flat surface and approximately 1,554 litres of room. Cherokee can easily be configured to your liking, allowing you to haul luggage, boxes, golf clubs, ski equipment and so much more. An optional wireless charging pad is concealed within the centre console. Nearby, an integrated

phone docking station and USB, SD auxiliary input and power port outlets give Cherokee the tech-savvy leading edge. With the award-winning and intuitive UConnect multimedia centre, you're always connected, informed and entertained. You can also use your voice to control nearly every feature hands free with the latest available voice recognition technology. Safety A vehicle-wide network of safety sensors helps maintain vehicle control, providing instant aid should they detect you are veering off your intended path. The Rain Brake Support system automatically helps maintain optimal braking by keeping brake rotors dry in wet conditions. Forward collision warning with mitigation features radar sensors which detect when Cherokee may be approaching another vehicle too rapidly and send an audible and visual alert to the driver, along with a brake jerk, if the driver does not react in time. You can see the new Jeep Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 east, Camrose. Phone 780672-2476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

THE ADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL. T:7.5”

In extremely cold weather, synthetic oil is simply better. Originally engineered for military applications, the controlled chemistry and purity of synthetic oil means that it protects your engine the best, when you need it most. Even at incredibly low temperatures, synthetic oil remains viscous, allowing it to immediately flow to and protect the critical components of your engine during the harshness of those cold weather starts. Ask your service advisor about upgrading to Pennzoil® synthetic oil motor oil today...

Oil & Filter Change Changing your vehicle’s oil and filter at regular intervals isn’t just a good idea – it’s a vital part of keeping your vehicle’s engine running properly. Engine oil protects your engine’s moving parts against wear and corrosion; but even the highest quality oils break down over time. Filters too have a limited life expectancy and once fully obstructed they lose their ability to filter contaminants from your engine oil. This combination of degraded, contaminated engine oil and an obstructed filter can directly damage the very components they were originally engineered to protect.

Rogers retires from McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet By Murray Green

After more than 28 years of dedicated service, Virginia Rogers is retiring as controller at the McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GM dealership. Virginia started at the local dealership in March 1986 in the accounting department where she manually reconciled the books. Since then the company has changed ownership three times and her work load has shifted between manual accounting to learning accounting programs and computer technician. “The first dealership was Barnes Chevrolet and the owner was Greg Barnes, in 1988 he sold the dealership to Bob Bell and I worked for him until the time that Will McClellan purchased the business,” she explained. “In 1986, I was hired to check the accounting records, as the previous accountant had quit and there was a lapsed time with no accountant in place. So my job was to bring everything back up to date and balance all the records,” she added. “I continued on in the accounting capacity. All the cheques were written manually and we had to enter all items in the computer and backup the system every day. The service repair orders had to be posted manually and also warranty claims to General Motors were posted onto a separate computer

37 YEARS for transmission. It was my first experience with accounting systems on computers.” When Bob Bell purchased the dealership, he switched to a new system called ADP. “It was a totally new learning experience for me. At that time I flew to Vancouver for a weekend workshop to learn the system. At this time accounting entries were entered directly into the computer. The ADP system eliminated much of the manual posting. Computers didn’t exactly ease the work load for Virginia. “It cut down on the manual work, but I don’t think it cut down on the actual work,” joked Virginia. “We still had a lot of reports to run, backup systems and train other people to learn the system. When I think back, we have come a long ways. Now-a-days computers are more self sufficient, reliable and backs up the information automatically. Continued on page 32

Telford designated as Certified Economic Developer By Dan Jensen

City of Camrose economic development officer Ray Telford has been granted the Certified Economic Developer designation by the Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC). “I was calling it my Christmas present,” said Telford, who is now able to put the letters EC.D. behind his name. Telford successfully completed EDAC’s stringent training program and both written and oral examinations. “The training takes a few years to do,” he said. “I did a full week of courses

offered by the University of Waterloo at the University of Alberta for a couple of years, as well as a few courses offered through the University of Calgary and the Economic Development Association of Alberta.” In September and December he wrote a pair of exams, one five hours in length and the other three hours. Telford said the training provided a lot of information about economic development that he did not previously know. “I learned a lot about the global economy and how that affects municipalities.

I also learned a lot about finance, planning, marketing and communications. Two of the big aspects of economic development are communication and marketing and trying to make sure what you are doing will promote the city and bring about growth.” Telford will need to obtain certification again in three years’ time. “EDAC designation along with a requirement of re-certification every three years will establish and maintain a uniform and professional basis for all Canadians employed in this field and will generate

support from industry and governments,” said EDAC chief executive officer Penny Gardiner. Telford has been the economic development officer for the City of Camrose since 2011. He was economic development officer and communications officer for the town of Drumheller for 12 years, before which he spent 26 years in broadcasting. He started his working career as an 18-year-old radio announcer in Edson before working his way up to the position of general manager of Energy 98 in Fort St. John and Q91 in Red Deer.

Telford is pleased with the way that businesses in Camrose are expanding. “In the next year or so there will be about 200 new positions opening up in the Camrose area, seventy five to eighty per cent of which are due to existing businesses that are expanding their operations,” he said. “The fact that they are offering employment means that we can expect more people to move to Camrose.” Telford is one of just 25 economic development officers in Alberta who have ECAD’s Certified Economic Developer designation.

City Center embarks on social media plan By Dan Jensen

City Center Camrose has embarked on a social media plan designed to engage followers on Facebook and attract others to its website. “We want to provide information about the goings on in City Center and throughout the city,” said City Center Camrose board member and Bra Necessities owner Kim Turre. City Center Camrose hopes the new plan will generate awareness and excitement about what the city has to offer, particularly in the downtown area. “We feel that events hosted throughout the city are beneficial to City Center Camrose,” said Turre. “We are looking forward to playing a more active roll in supporting all types of happenings.” City Cent er Camrose is encouraging organizations and businesses to email details of upcoming events, sales and/or promotions they are hosting in their business, and other occasions they would like City Center Camrose to share and promote to camroses@ telusplanet.net. Ample notice should be given so page administrators can upload and schedule the content well in advance. “We look forward to increasing City Center Camrose followers and helping promote all things Camrose,” said Turre.

RIBBON CUTTING FOR NEW CAMROSE BUSINESS

Camrose mayor Norm Mayer cut a ribbon Feb. 11 to officially open the Camrose Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic at #1040, 6708-48 Avenue. Helping him perform the duties were, left to right, physiotherapists Chris Zarski and Gord Nadeau, a skeleton and City of Camrose economic development officer Ray Telford.

Police issue credit card fraud warning By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Police Service is cautioning local businesses to be more diligent with credit card transactions after three individuals were caught defrauding several businesses recently. “The frauds all involved credit card transactions where the suspects manually entered or had store staff manually enter stolen credit card numbers,” said Const. Matthew Wilton, forensic identification specialist/crime prevention officer with the Camrose Police Service in a press release. “We warn that any form of manual entry into a point of sale terminal should be considered extremely suspicious and are recommending that businesses not allow any transaction to be completed this way.” On Feb. 13, three males aged 18, 19 and 31 were arrested and charged with numerous offences involving credit card frauds at various business locations in

Camrose. The police investigation into these criminal allegations determined that the alleged offenders attended several businesses and acquired large amounts of merchandise. The accused would first present a dummy credit card for payment; upon the credit card being swiped the transaction would not be authorized by the point of sale terminal. The accused would then manually input a credit card number which allowed the point of sale terminal to approve the purchase. This same process was completed at a total of four different local businesses with total losses estimated to be approximately $3000.00 in merchandise and/or services. Police were able to recover a large quantity of the merchandise which included cartons of cigarettes, large amounts of alcohol, and prepaid credit cards. The three males were charged with a total of 37 Criminal Code offences consisting of: Pos-

sessing and Using Unauthorized Credit Card data, Theft Under $5000 and Possessing Property obtained by Crime. All three males appeared before the court on Feb. 19. “Businesses should be aware of this type of scam,” said Const. Wilton. “It is fairly low tech because the criminals are not using electronically altered cards but, rather they are using memorized stolen credit card numbers. This is not a legitimate way for a transaction to be completed and it may be against a business’s point of sale terminal rules which could make the business liable for any losses. Police would like to once again remind businesses to ensure that their store staff are diligent and watching out for these type of scams as they are quite obvious to spot.” This is not the first time that this type of credit card fraud has been committed in Camrose. In 2013 Police

investigated several different occurrences involving different suspects who all utilized this same fraudulent method. After each of those occurrences police made various attempts to warn and educate the business sector of Camrose about this specific trend in credit card fraud. “Anyone who believes that this scam is occurring should contact police immediately so attempts can be made to intercept the suspect(s),” said Const. Wilton. “In most cases it appears that these types of crimes are conducted by multiple suspects, one to commit the fraud and the other(s) to act as a distraction.” Businesses that require any further information or have additional questions about these scams are encouraged to contact the Camrose Police Service Crime Prevention Unit at 780-672-4444.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Rogers retires after 28 years with dealership Continued from page 29

Information can be found on the internet and it can be integrated with computers. Her role over the past three decades has evolved around accounting, computer technician and controller of the dealership. If anyone had a computer problem she was there to help them out as well as performing her other duties. Besides the change in vehicles, she also noticed the business has grown over the years. “When I first started we had maybe 12 employees on staff, now we have 40. When Norsemen Pontiac GMC was sold to McClellan Wheaton, all of the staff came to work for us. It increased our staff, so it meant more computers and more training time for me to teach others,” she continued. “One of my other jobs was to be the IT person, so that kept me busy as well. It meant setting up computers and added trouble shooting,” she said. Computers have improved the accuracy and efficiency in the accounting part of the dealership. I enjoyed being the controller and part of the administration team of the dealership. Virginia considers the staff and customers as her friends and thus treated them as such. “People are awesome. They bring a lot into the dealership and I like to get to know them. “Every day is different. Each day I plan what I have

to do, I may get started, but may not finish because something else needs to be done,” she said. “All customers that come in are different and you have to treat them differently, as individuals. It’s been challenging and exciting. That’s why I have been here so long.” Virginia retired as a full time employee at the end of February, but she has agreed to come back one day a week to help with training of Jarren Schultz to take over her position. “I haven’t finished training yet. This is not the type of job that you learn in one day or one month. Each day is different and it takes a while to fully understand everything. “I’m going to be available if Jarren needs my help. I appreciate working here and Will is awesome to work for. He is young and has some exciting ideas and that is good for all the staff.” Less work translates into more weaving, quilting, traveling, golfing and hanging out with her husband Don and their family. “I would also like thank everybody for all their kind wishes, flowers and gifts. I will miss my job, fellow employees and employer, but it is time to relax and enjoy this new phase of my life,” concluded Virginia.

World Day of Prayer honours women of Egypt By Murray Green

The women of Egypt are inviting people from around the world to join them in the World Day of Prayer celebration using the theme, Streams in the Desert. Each year the World Day of Prayer service offers curiosity, challenges, inspiration and encouragement as people learn about a focus country. The Camrose Church of God will be hosting a World Day of Prayer service on March 7 at 1:30 p.m. Through the voices of urban and rural, young and old, Egyptian women will introduce their country on a human scale. They will reveal Egypt as they live and see it with one foot firmly planted in the past and the other teetering on the cusp of modernization as they search for the next step. The service offers you the opportunity to learn more about the culture and heritage of Egypt. Christians in more than 170 countries around the world and 2,000 communities across Canada will gather on World Day of Prayer to pray and act in solidarity with the people of Egypt. World Prayer Day started in 1920 and became the international World Day of Prayer in 1922. Christians around the world began celebrating this event on the first Friday of March. For more information on the local event contact Karen at 780-672-4643.

Distracted driving still a concern

Distracted driving was the focus for traffic safety partners during the month of February. Police in Alberta are seeing more and more crashes resulting from distracted driving, and despite the best efforts of the government, enforcement and traffic safety partners, it appears the trend is growing. During February, Alberta’s Integrated Traffic Services, made up of Alberta Traffic Sheriffs and RCMP Traffic members focused their efforts on enforcing distracted driving laws on provincial highways in order to get the message out: distracted driving can cost you more than a data package. It can result in fines or worse – it can result in a serious or fatal collision. Even with all this information going out, some drivers are still not getting the message.
