Caution signs given green light at Kids Campus By Murray Green
The City of Camrose will be adding two new signs near the Gardner College Kids Campus along 47 Avenue in an attempt to slow traffic. City infrastructure and planning manager Wayne Franklin told City council March 3 that the caution signs will have an advisory tab with the words “When Children are Present.”
“We did some research on what signage would be acceptable. We found no appropriate sign,” explained F ra nk lin. “We came up with a caution sign, which is a standard construction sign. We found an additional tab ‘When Children are Present’ and put the two of them together. “The only difference
Life-like Appearance Before
would be that the sign would be yellow instead of construction orange.” The caution sign would be on top and the tab would be below to conform with standard signage. “The approximate cost of the erection of these
signs would be about $1,000,” said Franklin, who added that the City can’t use a symbol of a child in motion because that is for playgrounds and it would be confusing. Councillor Agnes

Hoveland questioned whether it would be possible to just put the words children present on top instead of the bottom. “The reason I’m saying that is because children are present on and off all day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.” Franklin explained the standard sign usage around the province is to have the caution on top and then qualify the meaning below. “That is the standard. We caution council to use as close to the standard signage practices as possible. If we don’t, we are treading on dangerous ground.” Franklin indicated that the location doesn’t have enough foot traffic to warrant crosswalk signage. “We encourage parents to drop of children on the proper side of the street to avoid children having to cross the street.” Hoveland encouraged the parents and the day care to use caution when loading and unloading children. Gardner Kids Campus was required to provide 17 parking stalls within 150 metres as part of its development permit.

City backs bid for Snowbirds By Murray Green
Camrose City council agreed to support the Camrose Flying Club in its bid to have the Canadian Forces Snowbirds fly over the city during the Big Valley Jamboree this summer. Councillor Wayne Throndson moved that the City provide $6,000 in Community Assistance Grant funding and $6,100 in additional in-kind manpower support. Protective Services manager Kim Isaak explained to council that the in-kind allocation is the same amount as the costs for the 2011 show that required 136 man hours and 60 hours of dedicated vehicle time. Flying club representative Jadene Mah had originally asked for $12,000, the same amount that was given in 2009. However, council also received a request for funding from the Canada Cup of Curling event. The Community Assistance Grant has $30,000 in the account. “With all respect to the Snowbirds and how important it is, I don’t think this is a City responsibility. I think it a responsibility of Big Valley and CRE (Camrose Regional Exhibition), said councillor Bill Sears. “In the past, Panhandle Productions has been great to work with us and helps us with federal grants through the military and we haven’t been as cash poor with this event. They have been instrumental in lending inkind services to the event and to access grant funding,” said Mah. “We thought about bringing this to council first and then see what we can do with sponsorships and some of Panhandle’s partners. The City is our first stop because the cash is leverage when asking for sponsors. If we don’t have the City support, the Snowbirds’ manual won’t allow us to proceed anyway.” The Snowbirds want to do a fly by during the Big Valley Jamboree because of the large crowds. Councillor Max Lindstrand asked about how much the curling was asking for ($35,000) and agreed with councillor Agnes Hoveland that it is a drain on the account so early in the year. Mayor Norm Mayer asked councillors if they would be comfortable with $6,000, down from $6,500 last time and $6,100 inkind services, which led to Throndson’s motion. “If we don’t get a grant then it puts the onus on volunteers to get the extra money somewhere else,” added Mah. Aleisha Sommer and Elysia Marchand practice their roles for the production of The Trip to Bountiful, which will be performed at the Augustana Theatre Centre starting this week.
Augustana ready for spring production By Dan Jensen
Augustana students are putting the finishing touches on their production of Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful. The Trip to Bountiful is a gentle and contemplative story set in the 1940s of an elderly woman’s (Carrie Watts) return to the small town along of Gulf Coast of Texas where she grew up before the Depression. “She longs to get back there but she has to live with her son in Houston,” said Augustana drama professor and play director Paul Johnson. Carrie starts her journey when she boards a bus that no longer stops in Bountiful, knowing that once she is let off at the nearest town she will still be faced with a 12-mile walk. Along the way she befriends a young woman, Thelma, who is going back home to live with her parents because her husband has been sent overseas. Although she is eventually tracked down by her son, Carrie receives the help of the local sheriff, Richard Bradford, who offers to drive her out to what remains of Bountiful, where the few remaining houses are derelict. “The play ends with Carrie returning to Bountiful knowing she is going to have to leave again and go back to Houston,” said Johnson. The Trip to Bountiful differs from a lot of the oth-
er kinds of plays put on by Augustana. “It is very much like (Anton) Chekhov and (Harold) Pinter plays in that it is really weighted on character and character pieces,” said Johnson. “Although there is action in the play you really look at the psychology of these characters and get a feel for their plight.” The Augustana production of The Trip to Bountiful will be backstopped by a gospel quartet that will be singing hymns during the many scene changes. “What struck me when I was reading the Broadway production reviews is that there were a lot of hymns being sung in the production,” said Johnson. “They (reviewers) talked about how the audience, when the hymns started, would just sing along.” Johnson feels The Trip to Bountiful will appeal to Camrosians with strong Norwegian roots in a way similar to another Augustana production, I Remember Mama. “People came out to I Remember Mama because it was something that was part of their heritage and it was what they grew up with. I think it will be the same with this one with these hymns if we can get the audience to know that is what we are doing here. Appropriate in this old church, too, that was once Camrose Lutheran Church and then became a performing arts centre and
is now a small theatre where we do plays.” Cast members for The Trip to Bountiful are first to fourth year students from a variety of different faculties. “As with all our major productions we open it up to all students, not just the ones in drama,” said Johnson. Scene changes in The Trip to Bountiful are made difficult by the limited amount of space in the theatre for the storage of props. “We have built the set to come out so that we would have some storage space behind the wall, so that made the stage much more shallow,” said Johnson. “That allows us to move, we think, in a very efficient way because there are five different settings: the apartment, the Houston bus depot, the Harrison bus depot, the bus, and then Bountiful itself.” Lighting for the play has been designed by the technical director of the Camrose Performing Arts Centre. The messages contained within The Trip to Bountiful are just as relevant today as when it was written. “It deals with issues that any aging population will deal with children having to figure out what to do with aging parents or single parents if one parent is left,” said Johnson. “I think that is an issue that is going to be with us for a long time, especially as my generation, you know the 60-year-olds now, are aging.”
The play also has a message about the importance of protecting the environment. “She (Carrie) talks in the play about why did they ever call this place Bountiful because the soil is just worn out,” said Johnson. “What they (former residents) did was plant cash crops, cotton, sugar cane, and they just took whatever they could out of the land until it couldn’t produce anymore. She talks about how it has all gone back to forest now and that eventually some people will come and chop down all the trees and plant their crops and wear the land out again.” The Trip to Bountiful has been staged numerous times. “There was another production of the show on Broadway last year to celebrate the 60th anniversary that featured an all AfricanAmerican cast,” said Johnson. A film version of The Trip to Bountiful in 1985 starred Geraldine Page, who won an Oscar for Best Actress. “She (Page) thanked Foote when he gave her the script,” said Johnson. “She came to his apartment to pick up the script and she said ‘thank you for my Christmas present.’ She knew it was a performance that she could excel in.” Performances of The Trip to Bountiful will be held in the Augustana Theatre Centre starting at 7:30 p.m. March 13 to 15 and March 20 to 22.

NOTICE OF BATTLE RIVER CREDIT UNION
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Wednesday, March 26, 2014 – 7:00 p.m. Norsemen Inn, Camrose The Members will consider the passing of a Special Resolution. The Special Resolution Motion is provided below: BE IT RESOLVED THAT Having been presented with the Amalgamation Agreement for the amalgamation of the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. and the Caisse Horizon Credit Union Ltd. and upon hearing the recommendation of the Board of Directors of the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. that it is in the best interest of the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. to enter into the Amalgamation Agreement and to continue operations as the amalgamated credit union*, the members approve the Amalgamation Agreement. Summary of the Amalgamation Agreement: The Amalgamation Agreement means and contains the terms and conditions upon which the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. (“Battle River”) will amalgamate their members and business with the Caisse Horizon Credit Union Ltd. (“Horizon”) in accordance with the Credit Union Act (Alberta). The board of directors of both Battle River and Horizon have completed the necessary due diligence and they are recommending that the members of Battle River and Horizon approve the Amalgamation Agreement. The proposed new credit union will create a +$800 million credit union serving the needs of 23,000 members through seventeen full-service locations. The new credit union will operate under a new name that will be identified in March 2014 and will take effect May 1, 2014. The proposed merger has the unanimous support of the Boards of Directors of both Battle River and Horizon credit unions. The shared future vision is a credit union that is operationally competitive and differentiated through its service levels and support for community. The members of Battle River and Horizon will immediately benefit from a larger and more diverse credit union that is able to offer a broader range of products and services including access to specialized resources, wealth and advisory services and greater depth in the area of agricultural lending. Horizon’s staff and members will benefit from a larger and more robust management team that will provide executive leadership to the credit union’s various functions and business lines. BRCF presents grant to Seniors Information Society
The amalgamated credit union will have seventeen branches located throughout north central and north west Alberta, comprised of the current eleven Battle River branches and the current six Horizon branches (the “Amalco*”). Consistent with prudent business practices all business areas of Amalco will be assessed for viability on an ongoing basis. Should Amalco discover that any one business area is not contributing to the corporate goals and strategy, the Board may elect to discontinue this business area of the Amalco operations. The Amalgamation Agreement also includes the bylaws for the Amalco. The bylaws are available at your local branch. The board of directors of Battle River and Horizon have recommended the bylaws for the Amalco for member approval. The board of directors of the Amalco will continue to be elected from Battle River and Horizon service areas, and represent all regions. The Board will initially consist of 12 members. The Members of both Battle River and Horizon will become members of the Amalco with all of the rights and privileges they currently enjoy. The Amalco will continue to operate under the existing management structure. The head office for the Amalco will be located in Camrose, Alberta and the current CEO of Horizon will take on the position of Vice President North. Battle River is currently the highest ranking credit union in the province in terms of capital levels. Horizon has a strong foundation of loyal members and talented staff and the communities Horizon serves present growth opportunities for the future. Horizon lacks the economies of scale and resources that will be necessary to adequately invest in the future, given the increasingly competitive market. The combined assets of Battle River and Horizon will result in a $800 million credit union which will be the second highest ranked credit union in terms of capital levels, serving over 25,000 members. The transition cost to complete the amalgamation, including professional fees, amalgamation of internal systems, branding, signage, and related cost is estimated to be $1,000,000.00. Currently members of Battle River each hold one share at par value of $1 per share and Horizon members hold 25 shares at a par value of $1 per share. Following the amalgamation there will be a mandatory redemption of 24 shares for each Horizon member. The total cost of this redemption will be approximately $120,000.00. If approved by the members of both Horizon and Battle River the Amalgamation Agreement would take effect on May 1, 2014. A copy of the complete Amalgamation Agreement will be available at the Battle River Annual General Meeting and the Horizon Annual General Meeting. *The proposed name of the Amalco will be presented at the Annual General Meeting.
Members, please join us as we present the incredible results of the past year! Door prizes and reception will follow the meeting. Hope to see you there!

Battle River Community Foundation board member Brandon Kroeger presented a cheque for $1,000 to Donna Coombs, executive director of the Camrose and District Seniors Information Society.
The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $1,000 to the Camrose and District Seniors Information Society. The grant is to assist the Society with offering presentations on issues of importance to seniors and with providing assistance to seniors making applications for program assistance. In both cases, the Battle River Community Foundation grant will help get the Seniors Information Society sessions into lodges where seniors reside. Funding for this grant came from the John and Nancy Howard Fund, a number of emerging funds and the Foundation’s Community Fund. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $2,250,000 to support important local initiatives and organizations such as the Camrose and District Seniors Information Society.

BRONZE MEDALLIST HAS FOND MEMORIES
Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson, right, who is MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose, had the opportunity to pose for a photo with Olympic bronze medallist Olli Jokinen in Winnipeg after the conclusion of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Jokinen said he has great memories of the Viking Cup and told Olson to say hello to everyone in Camrose.
Community stakeholders to help shape the future The Government of Alberta will examine new ways to leverage current programs and services for continued growth and a strong rural economy. An MLA task force will help engage key community stakeholders as part of the creation of a Rural Economic Development Action Plan – a blueprint for future rural sustainability and success. “With an economic footprint estimated at more than $77 billion each year, rural Alberta is an important economic driver and a critical component of the Building Alberta Plan,” said Verlyn Olson, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. “Through the Action Plan, we will build on the success of our rural communities by embracing new ideas, creating linkages between existing resources and organizations, increasing Alberta’s rural economic development infrastructure capacity, and ultimately growing our provincial economy.” Targeted stakeholder roundtable discussions will be held in March and April to discuss priorities, identify opportunities for growth and job creation, and look for ways to better coordinate current programs and services to enhance rural economic development. The discussions will focus on five key themes: industry and business development; financial and capital access; workforce development; regional coordination; and rural economic infrastructure capacity. “The Rural Economic Development Action Plan will help enhance economic growth in rural Alberta by working together with stakeholders to build a strong rural economy that benefits all Albertans,” said Hector Goudreau, MLA for Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley, chair of rural caucus and MLA task force member. “With smart planning and effective programs and services, we can help our rural communities become even more vibrant.” Along with Minister Olson and MLA Goudreau, the task force will include Jacquie Fenske, MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville; Ken Lemke, MLA for Stony Plain; and Bridget Pastoor, MLA for Lethbridge-East.
Humans have always burned carbon, whether in the form of wood, coal, natural gas, or oil. Our human population has grown from one billion in 1800 to over seven billion today largely because we learned how to extract and burn vast quantities of carbon, especially in the form of oil. Oil is the basis of our modern civilization, and it’s doubtful we could sustain global industrialization and transportation without it. Without oil, we would not have the plastics and pharmaceuticals that undergird modern medicine, the ability to refine steel and other metals, and energy to develop and apply the fertilizers and pesticides needed to feed our growing population. We have become a species almost entirely dependent on carbon combustion, and are now scrambling to sustain ourselves as supplies dwindle and demand grows. Yet now an immense, unanticipated, problem has arisen to our atmosphere and all living things on the planet. Burning carbon, no matter the kind, releases gases, which, depending on the life form encountering them, may have good or bad effects. For example, plants use carbon dioxide in photosynthesis to produce sugars and oxygen, which we need. However, in large amounts, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are deadly to us. The majority of gases from combustion (from industrialization or volcanic eruptions) are absorbed by plants, lakes, rivers, and oceans, but the life-sustaining balance between gases emitted and gases absorbed has been altered. Since the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s, scientists have known that greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap heat in our atmosphere. Without these gases, our planet’s temperature would be about -18° C, which is approximately 33° C colder than present. Even though nitrogen and oxygen make up the majority of the earth’s atmosphere, carbon dioxide, along with methane and nitrous oxides, are the key gases that trap heat, as do our lakes and oceans.
Second Thought
Glen Hvenegaard, Environmental Science, and Jack Waschenfelder, Religious Studies, Augustana Campus, University of Alberta
Such heat absorption makes life possible on our planet. On the basis of analyses of air bubbles trapped in glacial ice, we know that in previous eras, when the amounts of carbon dioxide were high, our planet was very warm, and when the amounts were low, we were in an ice age. However, the last ice age, in which glaciers covered about 30 per cent of the planet, occurred in a global climate about 5° C colder than today. Given current rates of greenhouse gas emissions, scientists predict that our temperature in 2100 will be 2 to 3° C higher than in 2000. These temperature changes will be most evident in continental polar zones. These increases will significantly contribute to higher sea levels, more intense storms, receding glaciers, reduced sea ice coverage, and changes in precipitation and ecosystem patterns. Undoubtedly, this will affect our livelihoods connected to agriculture, forestry, fishing, tourism, or health. Some regions may benefit economically, but most will suffer. These changes are not still to come; they are happening right now, as the first wave of climate change refugees flee from lowelevation island nations in the south Pacific that are inundated from rising sea levels. Sadly, most of the effects will be felt by developing countries
that are poorly equipped to adapt. How do people react to these sobering predictions? In Canada, 80 per cent of people believe the science of climate change, and 65 per cent expect the government to play a role. In the USA, these numbers drop to 58 per cent and 43 per cent, respectively. Our specific reactions can vary considerably. According to a different survey, 18 per cent of Americans are alarmed about climate change, while 33 per cent are concerned, 19 per cent are cautious, 12 per cent are disengaged, 11 per cent are doubtful, and seven per cent are dismissive. Regardless of what most people think, 97 per cent of papers written by atmospheric scientists agree that humans are causing global climate change. These authors are the people who are scientifically trained to measure, explain, and predict our past, present, and future climates. How will we respond, as societies and as individuals, to this growing evidence of human-caused climate change? Most of us earnestly wish, despite the overwhelming evidence, that climate change was not happening, or that scientists will discover some fanciful technological solution to reverse these changes. However, the truth is getting more difficult to ignore and technological solutions often have other unintended, negative effects. The sooner we accept humanity’s significant role in climate change, the sooner we can take steps to reverse the trends. These efforts will have to take place on a multitude of scales and levels, but must include a significant and coordinated international response to be effective. Please join Dr. Hvenegaard and Dr. Waschenfelder for a “Lunch and Learn” discussion of this issue on Tuesday, March 18, noon to 1 p.m. in the Dr. Roger Epp Conference Room, Augustana Campus Forum $5 Admission: Lunch included for those who register email olafson@ualberta.ca or call 780-679-1626.

I was enjoying read-
ing your Valentine’s Super Booster, when on page 21 I was assaulted by the advertisement for Bra Necessities, which showed a very revealing picture of a women. As a young women myself, I see no reason whatsoever why feminine body parts have to be published in a community newspaper, most especially one that is for families. Our culture today already has an obsession with sex, which has resulted in the rapid demoralization of my generation and that of my parents. I believe that pub-
lishing advertisements such as the one mentioned above only increases the rate at which we decline in morality; however, I also believe that a publication such as yours has the potential to positively impact a large number of people for the better. My hope is that you will consider forming stricter guidelines regarding advertisements, especially those that have to do with women’s apparel. Thank you for taking the time to address my concerns. I do enjoy reading
your newspaper, and would be disappointed if I have to end up throwing away the newly-received publications for lack of modesty. Rebecca Jacobson Bashaw Bailey Theatre
I am writing about the Bailey Theatre and all of the controversy over the Bailey. It is sad that it has come to choosing what is right for the Bailey. When they first talked of redoing the theatre a lot of people, myself included,
thought it would become a dinner theatre with live performances (something like the Mayfield in Edmonton), but on a smaller scale. We thought since they put in the kitchen and storage for groceries that’s the way they were going. As this is supposed to be a seniors community and a lot of people don’t get to Edmonton, we thought we could see some performances here, which would have been just great. Continued on page 15

Kevin believes the performing arts centre will be another one of the city’s unique facilities. “Not only is this going to help people who live in our community but it is going to be a big draw for our community,” said Kevin. “It will bring a lot of people through the community.” Ally, who along with her and Kevin’s two daughters danced with the Camrose Academy of Dance and served on the academy’s board for 15 years, has first hand insight into how much the performing arts centre is needed. “To have a facility like this in our own backyard is wonderful because we had to travel so much with the dance academy,” said Ally. “There was no place in town that had a stage or a facility that would accommodate the number of dancers in the group dances.” Kevin feels that tying the performing arts centre into the Augustana campus of the University of Alberta is a great idea. “Not only is it a beautiful location to have the facility but I think something like this is going to probably help draw some extra enrolment here as well, which I know the dean is always looking for,” said Kevin. “As a com-

munity we would like to see this university continue to grow.” Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger, who accepted the gift from the Gurrs along with Camrose mayor Norm Mayer, said the performing arts centre fundraising campaign is starting to close in on its $5 million goal. “We are well past the $3 million mark in fundraising overall and are pushing toward a successful conclusion.” Berger said it is grati-
fying to see the Camrose business community coming together to support the arts centre. “They are setting wonderful examples, and the fact that Kevin and Ally and others are stepping up bodes well for the future.” Mayer Mayer said the gift from the Gurrs shows they appreciate the community and are doing what they can to make it better. He feels more people will be stepping forward with support once they are
able to receive a closer look at what the centre will have to offer. “It is a state-of-the art facility that will bring entertainment to Camrose that we don’t have at this stage because of the sizes and capacity, so we will wind up benefitting from that,” said Mayer. “It will also bring a bigger enrolment to the university, which we are very pleased about.” The performing arts centre project is being driven by the University
of Alberta and the City of Camrose, with support from Camrose County as well as the provincial and federal governments. Its construction meets international sustainability standards and its photovoltaic array – one of the biggest in Canada – will capture 142 kilowatts of solar energy to feed back into the Augustana power grid.
Council approves Main Street coordinator subsidy By Dan Jensen
City council has agreed to pay $10,000 to the coordinator of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation’s Main Street program in Camrose as a salary top up and fund an additional $14,750 in main street coordinator office/travel expenses. Existing residual funds from projects that did not materialize in the previous Main Street program will fund $24,000 of the coordinator’s salary. The Alberta Historical Resources Foundation granted Camrose membership in the Alberta Main Street Program in a meeting at Rocky Mountain House last September on the condition that the City employ a part-time or full-time main street coordinator. Also at the meeting, the Foundation approved the re-allocation of $74,360 for key projects proposed by City Center Camrose, including the rendering of some of the buildings on main street to show businesses the potential presentation of their building, the implementation of a pro-
gram that would reimburse half of the design/rendering costs as well as half of the cost of paint and labour for individual building owners so that they will upgrade the presentation of their building, the design of brackets for blade signs and banner poles, the creation of a City Center Camrose brand, and further renovations. “The rendering of the buildings would enable us to show the business or property owner how the front of their building would look with a variety of paint jobs,” said Audrey Pfannmuller in a presentation to City council a year ago when she was the City Center Camrose president. “Implementing a reimbursement program that would subsidize business or building owners half of paint and labour would encourage their participation in contributing to the beautification of the whole downtown, further making it a great place to do business.” The City of Camrose was the primary applicant for Main Street program membership, while City Center Camrose
was the sponsoring organization. Camrose thrived as a Alberta Historical Resources Foundation Main Street program community from 2000 to 2008, during which time 16 downtown buildings were rehabilitated or restored. Work completed by the program from 2007-08 resulted in the creation of 41 jobs, 23 business openings, two building rehabilitation projects and the expenditure of 120 volunteer hours. Alberta Historical Resources Foundation municipal heritage services manager Matthew Francis told council in a verbal presentation Feb. 3 that the Main Street Program is designed to help conserve the historic main streets all across Alberta. “The Alberta Main Street Program is a network of communities that have tremendous historic commercial districts, as well as an opportunity to share information and best practices,” said Francis. “Certainly the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation was
pleased to welcome Camrose back into the program this past fall.” Members of the Alberta Main Street program are eligible to apply for project based grants around four points: organization, marketing, design and economic development. “We do support project based grants around those four categories and $10,000 matching is available in each of those categories each year,” said Francis. “Camrose could apply to access any of those to assist with projects you may have in the historic commercial area.” One of the pre-requisites for Camrose coming into the program again said Francis was the completion of a heritage inventory. “Camrose did request to use $60,000 in funds that were remaining from the Alberta Main Street funds granted by the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation for that inventory, which was completed in 2010,” said Francis. “That information is available in planning and development, and provides
information on all of the historic resources that were identified, a number of them being in the historic main street area. This provides a rich set of administration for administration and council for making decisions in the future.” Francis believes that Camrose has a significant collection of historic buildings. “Of all the Main Street communities across Alberta,” he said, “I think Camrose is one of the most unique in presenting some of those traditional building types that we see all across the province.” Francis said it is important to understand that the greatest way to conserve historic places is for them to have a use. “We are not in the business of freeze-drying the past, we are interested in having living historic places that are dynamic, conserving the heritage values of the community while at the same time adapting to the needs of the present.”

Letters to the Editor Continued from page 8
I feel the City has made the right decision not to pay the debt down as the Bailey hasn’t proved they can help doing it up to now and in the end the taxpayers would be stuck with helping out and our taxes are high enough in Camrose. There are a lot of people that are not well off and just making ends meet and are living from day to day. I also think the web poll was in poor taste as it should have been done before the City made their decision, and also everyone doesn’t have a computer to vote in the web poll in which, I for one, couldn’t vote. If the Bailey hadn’t went as a non-profit society things might have worked a little differently if they had joined with the performing arts centre and made up two performing arts centres and would have two different venues. Like I said, it is a sad situation either way you look at it, but I think the City did the right thing by not paying for the Bailey with everything else being developed at this time. Margaret Sydora, Camrose Racism runs deep
After reading Douglas Hendrickson’s repugnant and mean-spirited letter to the editor on Feb. 25 I struggled to find some redeeming qualities in what he wrote. His letter both mocked the language and cultural history of the Indigenous peoples of this region as well as implied that the residential school system was somehow beneficial and instrumental to uplifting generations of Aboriginal children. Given that the federal government settled the largest class action lawsuit in the history of our country for damages caused by the residential school system and that our prime minister has formally apologized for its brutal legacy, such a claim is simply preposterous. Despite my distaste for his opinion, there are still several important issues this letter helps to highlight. First, it points to the need for greater awareness and understanding of the enduring effects and trauma of residential schools in the general Canadian public. Thankfully on this front, such a letter could not have been more fortuitously timed. From March 27-30, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada (http://www.trc. ca) will be holding its Alberta National Event in Edmonton intended to promote healing and reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples by supporting greater understanding of the long term impacts of residential schools. I would encourage anyone who has questions about residential
schools to attend this event to hear first-hand from survivors who attended these schools and decide for themselves if the system produced the societal benefits that Mr. Hendrickson describes. The other positive outcome of this letter was educational in nature. I regularly teach about the characteristics of prejudice and discrimination and I have often found some of the Canadian examples in textbooks I use to be somewhat dated. Many of my students, for example, have difficulty relating to cases like Ernst Zündel because they weren’t even born when these events occurred. I’d like to thank Mr. Hendrickson for providing me with an up-to-date example illustrating that racism and prejudice still run quite deep within certain segments of the Alberta populace. Sean Moore, Camrose Let’s learn about true reconciliation
Recently I’ve been inspired by many, varied events held in Camrose, such as attending lectures in Jérôme Melançon’s Politics of Dissent class, watching the film Gently Whispering the Circle Back, listening to elders Vincent Steinhauer and Charles Wood speak at the Nordlys Festival, and most recently Dr. Cheryl Bartlett’s talk at Augustana on “Two-Eyed seeing as a guiding principle for transcultural and transdisciplinary science education.” These opportunities indicate an exciting trend which I hope continues to help us build better relationships with neighbours from all cultural traditions, be they Indigenous, from European settlers or new comers from all parts of the world. Perhaps we are seeing the beginnings of an Anishinaabe prophecy that declares “now is the time for Aboriginal peoples and settler communities to come together and build the ‘8th Fire’ of justice and harmony.” We need to get past 500 years of harmful colonial policies, Indian residential school abuses, conflicts, and denial in order to learn a history of Canada from all sides as it has rarely been taught before. I wonder if we need to heed Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words spoken during the American civil rights’ movement: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Let’s challenge prejudices, stereotypes, and misunderstandings that arise out of sketchy history lessons, or the simple fact that many Canadians say they have never met an Aboriginal person. When to Clean?
Why Clean?
• Regularly (every four to five years) • After renovations – Remodelling can create sanding dust that continues to circulate well after the job is complete • Before you have a new furnace installed • After purchasing a new or a new-to-you home • After you’ve had mice invade your home • More often if your family has allegies • More often if you have an active household • More often if you have pets in your home
Cleaning your furnace system controls dust and allergens in your home. Each time your furnace starts, contaminates are carried in the flow of the warm air through your home. The air is then recycled through the cold air returns. Symptoms of poor indoor air quality may include rashes, eye problems, headaches, dizziness, coughing, colds, breathing problems or fatigue.

As former PM Paul Martin points out “Canada… cannot afford to waste a single talent and Aboriginal Canadians are not only the fastest growing (population segment), they are the youngest members of our society.” We are all treaty people, bound by the Crown, and Canadian obligations to honour agreements made with First Peoples to share this land in peace, friendship, and mutual respect. It is in this spirit that PM Harper gave the federal government’s apology in 2008, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was set up to document the abuses in residential schools. As Jack Layton remarked at the time of the apology in the House, “Reconciliation must be built through positive steps that show respect and restore trust. The apology must not be an end. It must be a beginning.” March offers many more local opportunities to learn together as I am discovering. Many churches are preparing to bear witness at Edmonton’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) National Event being held March 27 to 30 at the Shaw Conference Centre. Augustana is organizing a TRC Live-Streaming and Teach-In at U of A, Augustana Campus, Friday, March 28. Bethel Lutheran is holding a series of four adult forums during Sunday mornings starting March 9 and two evening events, March 16 and 30. Our Lady of Mt. Pleasant High School will be offering an afternoon workshop for students, with some sessions open to the public, Monday March 24. It may take many generations to achieve, but when we have true reconciliation, we will all be better for it. Ellen Parker, Camrose

Watching movies supports your community projects By Murray Green
Guest Artists ~ Dr. Roger Admiral, Piano~ Olav Traa, French Horn
Now you can tell your mom or spouse that sitting around watching movies instead of cleaning helps your community. You can raise money for a good cause while watching five great films during the Midnight Movie Marathon at Duggan Cinemas starting at about midnight on Saturday, March 29 and ending mid-morning on Sunday. Movie marathon participants will seek pledges from friends, family and businesses to raise funds for the Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF). “This helps us create more exposure for the BRCF. We want the youth and their parents to understand that the foundation helps a lot of organizations and people, said Imogene Walsh BRCF director. “We want to spread the word that the BRCF is not just about Camrose, but that it has a far reaching effect in the surrounding area. The BRCF supports and donates to many charities and projects beyond Camrose County. “We are working with the Killam community to have youth groups become involved with the movie marathon, said Imogene. “This is a great way for them to get involved
and see the benefits of the funds going back into projects. Augustana students and the Camrose Boys and Girls Club are going to be participating in the event again. “The Boys and Girls Club is going to be making their van available for pick ups. They are willing to stop at Augustana and pick up students at the university as well, explained Imogene. “The Midnight Movie Marathon promotion was started in Camrose as an opportunity for Magic Lantern Theatres to give something back to the community as well, said Shelly Kucway, manager of Duggan Cinemas in Camrose, prior to last year’s event. “This is a great way to give to one organization that in turn helps out a variety of groups in the area. We supply the films and drinks, so all of the pledges that come in can go to charity through the Battle River Community Foundation. Our concession will also be open for snacks because people are not allowed to bring food into the theatre. This is the third charity Midnight Movie Marathon for Camrose. “Each year, we want to have more participants so more funds are raised because
people want to help out the entire community, added Shelly. “People love to come to the cinemas and bring their pillows and blankets. Shelly said helping the communities that have cinemas is the goal of Magic lantern Theatres. “We want the community to benefit and this is one way of doing that. We cover the costs of the entire operation, the movies, the staffing and the promotions, so that 100 per cent of the money raised can go towards charity, explained Shelly. The movie marathon has caught on in the rest of Canada. The movies shown in Camrose will be Enders Game, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs2, Jack Ryan, Gravity and Catching Fire. Participants must be 14 years of age or older and register prior to the marathon from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. on March 29. For more information call Duggan Cinemas at 780-6082148. Stop by the theatre box office, The Camrose Booster or the Battle River Community Foundation to pick up pledge forms, or visit www.Magic LanternTheatres.ca to download your own forms.

Spring Thaw The importance and beauty of water cannot be denied. As crucial as water is to mankind, its power to devastate and destroy is equally true. In 2013 the power of Mother Nature and significant natural “water” events provided our land-locked province of Alberta with challenges as well as opportunities which highlight the dual nature of our most precious natural resource. In celebration of water in its many manifestations and in tribute to those affected by these events, Mannskor will dive into an eclectic pool of repertoire drawn from art, folk, and gospel traditions inspired by the universal element of water at its upcoming spring concert. A splash of music will be added to celebrate both the Ides of March and St. Patrick’s Day. Along with special guest artists Dr. Roger Admiral (piano) and Olav Traa (French horn), as well as presentations by the Battle River Watershed Alliance and Ducks Unlimited Canada, the concert takes place on Sunday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Augustana Campus chapel. Through diverse repertoire drawn from the bountiful male choral tradition, choristers from Mannskor are led to improve vocal technique and choral musicianship skills. Mannskor serves to build strong relationships between Augustana students, staff, faculty, and members of the University and Camrose communities. This choral ensemble is directed by Dr. Ardelle Ries. For further information regarding the concert, contact the Augustana Fine Arts Office at 780-679-1532.

Soapstone carving classes offered at Arts Centre By Murray Green
Beautiful soapstone carving can be created by artists without a lot of experience. Canadian carver Jayson Ambrose is offering four different classes on how to turning a piece of rock into a creation that you would be proud to display in your home. “I use different types of stones from all over the world. The stones come from China and Brazil and are in various colours. The rocks come in raw from and then I cut them into squares. I make a template and draw the figure onto the stone,” explained Jayson. “I draw the picture on the stone and then use various types of saws to start forming the shape. Then I use several files and various types of sandpaper to form the carving into the shape I want it,” he added. “Once you have used a file, you have to sand off the file marks. Soapstone is a soft stone, so most of your time is spent sanding it into shape. Finally, I use a wet sandpaper to shine it. I also just use my hands because the natural oils in your hands is what makes them shiny,” said Jayson. “I have doing this since elementary school. We went to a museum in Winnipeg on a school trip – that’s where I’m originally from – and they gave us some soapstone to play with and I’ve liked it ever since.” Jayson’s first carvings were not made in stone. “I started carving my dad’s soap from his soap-on-a- rope and he didn’t appreciate that too much because the soap would fall off the rope,” he said with a laugh. “Then they got me some soapstone and I have been carving it ever since.” Stones have caught his eye since he was little. “The neatest part in seeing the stone in rough is that you don’t know the colour of it until you carve it. It is hidden in nature, which I find so fascinating. The colour is already there, you just have to bring it out,” he explained. “I like to create things from my childhood memories. Right now I’m working on a series of owls that remind me of my grandmother. I’m dedicating the series to all grandmothers.” Jayson’s father often took him camping because they lived in the city. Variety night attracts top acts to the
Sponsored by
Bailey Theatre By Murray Green
The Bailey Cabaret Variety Night is packed with some of the hottest acts in the entertainment business. The opening show will feature emcee Tim Koslo, Front Porch Roots Revue and special guest Joe Nolan on Friday, March 14. “The Bailey is going to present three cabaret/variety night shows over the next couple of months,” said Peter North, programming consultant for the Bailey Theatre. “We feel that a night of music combined with comedy will be a perfect fit for our venue and hopefully provide something for everyone.” Emcee Tim Koslo will warm up the crowd with laughter along with one of his comedian friends. “The Bailey Theatre is a gem and it is not only a great entertainment venue, but a very historical one at that. I’ve been doing standup comedy for almost 29 years and performing anywhere is a great thing,” joked Tim. “To be performing in Camrose and in a theatre like that with the performers of the magnitude of those I will be introducing, well, it doesn’t get much better than this.” Tim will be starting off with his off-the-wall standup comedy and talking about upcoming acts. “What I have gold (jokes that are a hit with the audience) stay in the act and I just add or take away a little bit from each show. I bring back material and mix it with new stuff and keep improving the routine,” he added. “You never give up the gold.” Tim doesn’t pick on people, but does like audience participation. “Sometimes I turn myself into a character that is a burnt out intellectual to the power of 10 where substance abuse has created

Augustana women’s hoops team is off to nationals By Murray Green
The Augustana Vikings silver medal winning women’s basketball team will join the golden Grant MacEwan Griffins as the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference representatives at nationals in St-Lambert, Longueuil, Quebec, March 12 to 15. The wild card Vikings will draw the powerful and number one ranked Nomades de Montmorency in the second game on March 13. MacEwan faces Quest Kermodes in the opening contest. Augustana will play the winner or loser of that match in their next game of the championships. The Griffins beat Augustana in the ACAC final 74-65 with both teams knowing they would be earning a berth at nationals. Kari Kubinec led all scorers in the game with 23 points. Kelsey Lund added 15 more in support on offence. Augustana defeated SAIT 71-66 with Taryn Story scoring 19 points, and edged NAIT 71-69 as Lund led the way with 16 points to help the Vikings reach the medal contest. Hockey The Augustana Vikings earned four points for the second consecutive weekend to slip into third place in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. Augustana wanted Portage to steal a game from Red Deer, while the Vikings beat Concordia 4-2 in both games. Portage, the team the Vikings are facing in the first round of the playoffs, knocked off Red Deer 5-2 in the last game of the regular season on March 1. In the playoffs, Augustana edged Portage 6-5 in a high scoring opening game. Mathew Foster took charge of the offence for the Vikings by scoring a hat trick, while both Adam Johnson and Dane Bonish chipped in with three assists each. Harrison Tribble, Scott Aucoin and Jeff Lorenz notched single markers to round out the scoring for the Vikings. Goalie Joel Danyluk stopped 28 of 33 shots while his teammates also recorded 33 shots at the other end. All playoff series, including the finals, will be a best of three format. The regular season expanded when Red Deer entered the league, but the sacrifice was the shortening of each playoff series. Augustana’s first round games were slated for March 5, 7 and 8.

Kodiaks gain home ice advantage over Eagles By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks lost the advantage they worked so hard to receive when they lost a heartbreaking 1-0 decision in the opening game of their series with the Canmore Eagles. It was a goaltender’s duo between rookie goalie of the year Ryan Ferguson, of the Eagles, and the Kodiaks’ Devin McDonald, who was recently named Alberta Junior Hockey League player of the week, at the EnCana Arena on March 6. Ferguson made 25 saves for the shutout win, including 11 in the middle frame when the Kodiaks pushed hard. McDonald made 26 saves in the loss. Both were named the stars of the game. Camrose ran into a little penalty trouble and the Eagles connected on a first period power play opportunity, That was all they needed in the evenly played match. The Kodiaks dropped the series opening game for the fourth year in a row, but that hasn’t stopped them from rebounding in the second game. Camrose edged the Olds Grizzlys 3-2 on Feb. 28 to gain home ice in the first series of the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs. The victory gave the
out 5-0 by Drumheller in a game that didn’t mean anything in the standings. However, the lack of scoring in 10 power play opportunities had the bears working on the power play system in practices. In the last three games of the season, the Kodiaks were zero for 26 on the power play. Bear facts

Kodiaks one more point than Canmore to place fourth in the southern division. Olds scored first, but the Kodiaks garnered three goals in just over a minute in the second to take the
lead. They hung on in the third frame after the Grizzlys scored. Devin McDonald stopped 19 of 21 shots he faced to launch the Kodiaks ahead of the Eagles in the
standings. The Grizzlys were content on forming a steady parade to the penalty box because Camrose went scoreless in nine man-advantage opportunities. The Kodiaks were shut
If the CamroseCanmore series goes the full five games, the final game will be at the EnCana Arena on March 12 at 7 p.m. Olds played Okotoks and Drumheller took on the Calgary Mustangs in the other series. Brooks received a first round bye for finishing first in the south. Fresh off the excitement of CBC’s Hockey Day In Canada, Lloydminster is working to land its next great event: the 2016 RBC Cup National Junior A Championship. Lloydminster’s official bid to host the event was submitted in mid-January to Hockey Canada and the CJHL by the Bobcats in partnership with the Lloydminster Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Hockey Alberta, and the local RBC branch.

Disability may qualify Stress Free Tax Preparation for income tax relief and Bookkeeping Canadians living with disabilities are eligible for a number of tax breaks designed to compensate for the extra expenses incurred. Even if you haven’t claimed your disability in the past, you may want to check if you qualify this year. The guidelines have recently been modified to include more Canadians. What does ‘disabled’ mean? A disability is a severe impairment which makes it extremely difficult or time-consuming for you to carry out basic activities of daily living, even if you are undergoing therapy and using appropriate devices and medications. The impairment must last or be expected to last 12 months and severely restrict your ability to see, walk, speak, hear or perform personal care activities or seriously affect your mental capacity to manage your personal affairs. The definition also allows for the cumulative effect of multiple impairments that individually would not be severe enough to qualify. For example, a taxpayer with multiple sclerosis who constantly experiences fatigue, depressed mood and balance problems will probably now qualify. Additional modifications also make it easier for sufferers of Type 1 juvenile diabetes to claim the disability credit. Generally, diabetics only qualify if their condition requires “life-sustaining therapy for at least three times a week for a total of at least 14 hours. In the past, taxpayers who controlled their condition with a syringe generally did not qualify under this provision. This is because Canada Revenue Agency took into account only the time administering the insulin when determining if the 14-hour requirement was met. However, the government has added the monitoring of blood sugar levels and dosage requirements to the types of activities that constitute therapy. As a result, more diabetics should now qualify. But before you start adding up your expenses, you must first file Form
T2201 – the Disability Tax Credit Certificate – with your return. The form has to be completed by a doctor, optometrist, audiologist, occupational therapist, psychologist, physiotherapist or speech language pathologist and is used by the CRA to determine if your disability meets the prescribed requirements. What credits are available? For 2013, the basic federal disability claim is $7,697, which translates into a federal tax credit of $1,155. The provincial tax savings vary depending on where you are living. Because it is a non-refundable credit, it only works to reduce your tax payable – it is not refunded if you don’t have any tax owing. If you don’t use the entire credit, you may be able to transfer it to someone else, such as a spouse or parent. For disabled children under 18, there is also a $4,490 supplement, which will increase the maximum federal claim to $12,187. However, this amount is reduced by child care expenses and attendant care expenses in excess of $2,630 that were claimed for the child. Disabled children can also qualify for the $500 Children’s Fitness Credit, including an additional $500 tax credit for any additional equipment that needs to be purchased to participate in an activity. There are cases when taxpayers support a relative who does not meet the strict definition of “disabled, but is still dependant by reason of an infirmity. If the dependant lives with you and has net income of less than $21,854, you may be able to claim a caregiver amount of up to $6,530 for a potential federal tax break of $680. If the dependant does not live with you, you may still be able to claim an amount for infirm dependants if his or her net income is less than $13,078. However, in both cases, the dependant must be at least 18 at the end of the year. Each province also has its own disability and caregiver credits. Be sure to check the provincial credits available to you. Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB) The 2007 Federal Bud-
get introduced the WITB designed to help lowerincome Canadians transition into the workforce. In most provinces, the WITB disability supplement will be equal to 25 percent of earned income in excess of $1,150, up to a maximum of $495. The amount will be reduced for single taxpayers with no dependants with a net income in excess of $17,827 and for families with a net family income in excess of $27,489. Different calculations apply in Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec and Nunavut. Additional expenses In some cases, an attendant is required to help care for the disabled person. The cost of attendant care can be claimed as a medical expense. However, if the attendant care cost exceeds $10,000, you cannot claim both the expenses and the disability amount – you have to decide which credit results in the most tax savings. If you incur disabilityrelated expenses in order to work or go to school, you may also be able to claim a deduction for them. For example, if you require a teletypewriter to make and receive phone calls, you may be able to deduct the cost. If you need an attendant to work or go to school, it will also be more beneficial to claim the cost under this provision instead of as a medical expense. Check the government’s guidelines on these deductions to make sure yours qualify. A tax professional at H&R Block can talk about other credits and deductions that may affect you. James “Jim” Aloysius O’Riordan July 21, 1926 – March 4, 2014 James (Jim) Aloysius O’Riordan was the seventh of ten children born to Mary Agnes Shea and Fredrick Alexander O’Riordan. Born on July 21, 1926 in Camrose, AB, Jim grew up in a loving and hardworking family with many neighbours who became lifelong friends – Eldon Hoover and family, Bill Glatiotis and family, and Lloyd Reed and family. Jim is remembered by neighbours, family and friends as a quiet, generous and kind gentleman … slow to anger and quick to laugh, and always willing to help a neighbour, stranger, family or friend in need. Jim led a life characterized by hard work, love for his family and a deep Catholic faith. His many kind deeds were done “behind the scenes” without his seeking attention or acclaim for his generosity, thoughtfulness and help. He is the unsung hero in many people’s lives. Throughout his life, Jim was a dedicated son to his parents; a supportive brother to his siblings; a loving husband to his wife; attentive father to his children; loving grandfather to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a fun-loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. Bev and Jim are well known to the community as a loving couple, enjoying each other’s company while attending church, family gatherings, morning coffees and other community outings. Neighbours will miss his jaunty hellos, joking ways and ongoing practical help (as he was fondly known as “Mr. Fix It”). The regular coffee gang will miss his hearty greetings, thoughtful “giving up his seat” and reputation for pouring the second cuppa coffee. Jim would frequently say, “There were no better folks than the ones who came for morning coffee” and “They would do anything for you”. Jim is predeceased by his parents Mary Agnes and Fredrick Alexander; his infant sister Rita; and brothers Robert Donald (RD), John Patrick (JP), Fredrick Joseph (Bitz), Thomas Gerald and Paul Shea. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife Beverley Hall; daughters Teresa Lynn (Ruth Laseur) and Lori Ann (Paul Krueger); and his sisters Anna Mary Margaret McGuiness, Marie Patricia McKinnon and Mary Aileen O’Riordan. He has left a legacy of kindness and compassion to his eleven grandchildren Mitchell James Krueger, Kyle Edmond Zerbin, Kenton James Zerbin, Ryan Alexander Zerbin, Clayton Hall Zerbin, Jennifer Delaine Zerbin, Melody Lang, Elizabeth Lahl, Tasha Marie Roberts, Tammy Colucci and Michelle Leah Pleich; 12 great-grandchildren including Josiah Parker Zerbin; and a great-great-grandchild. The family extends their deep appreciation to the volunteers of the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. This journey would have been much more difficult to travel without the needed comfort, gentle companionship and authentic connection that you provided. To those palliative care staff at St. Mary’s Hospital who provided Jim and family with sensitive care, compassion and professional courtesy, we truly thank you. The painful struggle was made easier with your help. A prayer vigil was held on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. from the Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. Interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The Hospice Society of Camrose & District. The 2014 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose is proof that you can make a good thing better. "The addition of SYNC and a rearview mirror a standard equipment builds on what was already a pretty impressive package and makes it stand out as one of the best small crossovers," said Lamb Ford sales manager Brett Read. Smart utility Ford calls the Escape the "smarter utility vehicle" because it offers the strengths that customers value – fuel economy, versatility and new technology. "Ford understands that more people every year are looking at vehicles like Escape and we want to give them even more reasons to buy," said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development. Eco Boost Ford Escape's EcoBoost technology combines twin independent variable camshaft timing, turbocharging and direct injection to let you get plenty of power out of every drop of fuel. The 1.6 litre EcoBoost four-cylinder uses just 9.1 litres per 100 km in the City and 6.0 litres per 100 km on the highway. The 2.0 litre EcoBoost
four cylinder uses just 9.5 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.7 litres per 100 km on the highway while delivering 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. "The Escape with the 2.0 litre engine can easily tow up to 1,588 kg when properly equipped," said Read. Ford Escape's standard engine is a 2.5 litre with 168 horsepower and 170 lb.ft. of torque. All three engines are mated to a six-speed Select Shift Automatic transmission with Sport mode. The Ford Escape makes itself more aerodynamic and fuel efficient with its class-exclusive active grille shutters. "When closed they help to reduce the drag caused by air travelling through the engine compartment," said Read. Torque Vectoring Control seamlessly enhances hold on the road while electric power-assisted steering enables pull-drift compensation to help correct for road irregularities and improve overall steering feel. Spacious The Ford Escape features generous hip, second row leg and rear cargo room. Heated front seats are standard on SE and
Titanium for extra comfort when the temperatures drop. A variety of environmentally-friendly materials are used throughout, including recycled plastic bottles that go into the carpeting. Scrap cotton from jeans, sweaters, T-shirts and the like are used in the sound absorption material. Plus, the vehicle itself is over 85 per cent recyclable after it has been driven its last kilometre. Escape offers up to 1,920 litres of cargo space and a class-exclusive handsfree liftgate. Simply move your foot under the rear bumper in a gentle kicking motion while the intelligent Access key fob stays tucked away in your pocket or purse. Sensors detect your leg and the motion, triggering the liftgate to open. The same action triggers it to close. Keep connected No more searching for your phone. No device in your ear. Once paired, voice-activated Ford Sync recognizes your phone and automatically transfers your contacts to support voice calling. It also plays music from your phone, MP3, USB or iPod. Just touch a button on the steering wheel and say things like "Call: John at work," or "Play playlist: roadtrip."
SYNC also includes 911 assist with GPS location reporting. SYNC with MyFord Touch includes a LCD touch screen, a LCD screen in the gauge cluster, five-way controls on the steering wheel, and a media hub with dual USB ports. Upgrade to the Navigation System for interactive maps you can zoom and scroll – complete with 3D landmarks. Choose Eco Route on the voiceguided turn-by-turn directions for a recommendation on the most fuel efficient way to travel. With Sirius XM Satellite Radio you can listen to your favourites all across Canada. Your six-month prepaid subscription gets you the best in audio entertainment, including 100 per cent commercial-free music from every genre, world-class news, sports, comedy and entertainment. Intelligent 4WD Escape with Intelligent 4WD is always ready for adventure. Assessing conditions about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye, the system readjusts as needed to deliver the right blend of handling and traction at all times. It is beneficial in all weather conditions, and provides excellent off-road traction. Plus, it has already
proven itself in challenging test environments around the globe. Escape's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert is designed to scan for vehicles approaching from either side as you slowly back out of a parking spot or driveway. If any are detected, the system alerts you with a chime, a message centre warning, and an amber light in the corresponding sideview mirror. While you're driving, BLIS uses the same amber lights to alert you if traffic is detected in your blind spots. Curve Control can help slow the Escape by as much as 16 km/h in approximately one second. Curve Control is effective on dry or wet pavement and is particularly useful on highway off ramps. Trailer Sway Control monitors the motion of the vehicle and detects trailer sway. If needed, it reduces engine speed and selectively applies the brakes to help you maintain control of both the vehicle and the trailer. You can see the 2014 Ford Escape at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Children’s Centre working hard for air conditioning By Murray Green
We Do Preventative Maintenance.
Each spring and summer students and staff at the Camrose Children’s Centre suffer through hot weather without a place to cool down. Day care and out of school program director Joanie Ewasko has launched a drive to raise funds to purchase an air conditioning unit to make the centre comfortable during the warmer weather that may be arriving soon. “We have been operating as a not for profit society since 1968. That is a lot of families that have come through the door. They have used the day care, day home program, out of school care and our ECS program, said Joanie. “This is not a new building, so it gets very warm and with the activity of these children, it gets to be too much. What we have been doing in the past is using small portable air conditioning units in each of the rooms. After an inspection of the units last year, all but one of them were cleared for use. “They are past their prime and were getting to a dangerous point. We were running the risk of them smoking and potentially causing a fire, explained Joanie. “The cost of replacing those units is about $2,000 to $3,000 each, but it doesn’t make sense to run these inefficient smaller units that jack up our utility costs and they don’t do much anyway. They make it a little cooler in one room, but it doesn’t help us in the office area or the gym. Installing a large air con-
ditioning unit would be more economical in the long run. “We started to look at fundraising and what it would cost to install a unit, said Joanie. “We are looking at a minimum of $24,000 and that is our goal. We are a little better than half in achieving that goal, but we are also running out of time. We have reached out to businesses for donations and are coming up with discount cards that can be sold, probably at the end of March. The Camrose Children’s Centre is hoping to have a unit installed in late spring. The board would like the funds in place before proceeding with the installation to ensure the costs are covered. “Lots of children have come through these doors and lots more will continue to do so because we have such a comprehensive program in one building, added Joanie. “We are hoping the community will see the same need that we do. The building is licenced for more than 100 children at a time. “We also have about 10 day homes that operate in the community, said Joanie. “In the summer, the numbers drop to about 60 to 70, but with the children running around it does get hot in here. Contact the Children’s Centre at 780-672-0131 for more information on how you can help them reach their goal.

The latest and greatest innovations, designs, consumer products and services will be on display when the Camrose Regional Trade Show is held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition this weekend. “We’re going to have many new and exciting home based, local and national exhibitors,” said CRE major events and international agriculture marketing manager Marilyn Lee. “There should be something for everyone.” While the CRE was still taking applications for trade show spaces as of last Thursday, it expects to have a full room by the time the event gets underway. “We have a lot of exhibitors coming from Edmonton and surrounding areas,” said Lee. The sizes of the displays at the show will be as varied as the exhibitors and their products. “The booths aren’t all going to be 10 by 10 feet,” said CRE chief executive officer Tom Gerling. “We have some exhibitors that will be taking up 2,000 and 600 square feet of space.” Fleetwood Towing from Camrose will be sponsoring an appearance by Jamie Davis, from Discovery’s Hit TV Show Highway Thru Hell. Davis, who runs the Hope-based heavy-rescue towing business at the heart of the series, will be signing autographs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 15. “It’s starting to be pretty common for trade shows to bring in celebrity types to add more excitement to the event,” said Lee. The always popular Thistle Hill Petting Zoo will be sponsored by OPT Waste Removal from Camrose. CRE will be giving away gift baskets filled with items that have been purchased from trade show exhibitors. “We’re going to be holding a draw every day,” said Lee. The Camrose Trade Show floor layout has not changed much over the last few years. “With the exception of some of the larger exhibitors everything is pretty much the same as it was last year with the aisles and the islands,” said Lee. Camrose Trade Show hours of operation are 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $5 for anyone over 12 years of age. Those who are under 12 are admitted free as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Camrose Special Olympic athletes on team Alberta include, back row from left to right, Jessica Enns, Nicole Wegren, Anthony Lechman, James McGillivary and Les Knudsen. Front row from left to right, Marianne Collinge, Brad Lyseng and coach Ginger Matthews. Missing is Chris Sutter. The games will be held on July 8 to 12 in Vancouver and Richmond.
By Murray Green Eight athletes and a coach from Camrose Special Olympics will be competing for Team Alberta at the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver, B.C. from July 8 to 12. Swimmer Marianne Collinge will be joined by bowlers Jessica Enns, Les Knudsen, Anthony Lechman, Brad Lyseng, James McGillivary, Chris Sutter and Nicole Wegren, as well as bowling associate coach Ginger Matthews. “As a member of the Team Alberta training squad, the athletes have committed hard work, effort and commitment to their preparation and training for the national Games,” said coach Ginger. All athletes and coaches have to log training journals to track progress. “The journals empower the athletes and coaches to track and improve eating habits as well as exercise and sports routines on a daily basis,” said Matthews. To qualify for the Games the athletes not only had to perform well at the Spring Games last April in Red Deer, but they had to have participated in the sport for at least two years, shown sportsmanship and been a good ambassador for Special Olympics. “We have seen weight loss, increase in water intake, better eating habits and a better training routine since then,” said coach Ginger. “The bowlers have improved their bowling averages and improved skill development.” The bowling coach didn’t want it to be a one-way street. “I decided to complete a virtual walk to the University of British Columbia, which is 1,356 kilometres,” said Ginger. “I wanted to participate with them and I’m down to my last 397 km.” The local Olympians will be filling an athlete sponsorship booklet as a way to engage their friends, family, employers and support groups and to inform them of their athletic commitment to Team Alberta. Once a supporter agrees to purchase a coupon, the athlete will sign it as a pledge to train. Each coupon is considered a donation and any donation of $10 or more will be eligible for a tax receipt.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

You might want to think twice about the items you are dropping off at Centra Cam’s Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot. “Although the majority of the donations we receive are useful and very much appreciated, we do receive donations that are unsafe to our staff and ask that people be more aware and cautious about what they are bringing,” said ECFD staff member Jessie White. The ECFD has been receiving more household garbage since the City of Camrose reduced the bag limits for garbage pickup. “Bags of household garbage pose a significant biological hazard to our staff,” said White. “Too often we have bags that include knives, broken glass and needles. If our staff don’t know what is inside a bag when they rip into it they could seriously cut themselves.” The ECFD recommends that people make use of the recycling depot for all their recyclables and, if the donations have been sitting in storage for a period of time, that they be checked for mouse droppings – the cause of several cases of the hanta virus in central Alberta. Items that are not accepted at the ECFD are metal or large desks, hidea-beds, bunk beds and water beds, bath rings/ seats, sinks, and toilets, drop side cribs, stained or ripped furniture, console televisions, anything that needs to be wired, anything that is in need of repair, car seats that have been in any kind of a collision or are expired, large appliances, blinds with cords, organs and record players, water coolers and stained/ripped mattresses. “Just last week we received two washers, two dryers and a couple of stoves that the staff here have to load onto a truck and take to the dump,” said White. “It takes a lot of time and money for us to go to the dump all the time.”
The ECFD takes donations at its back door from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday. “We would like people to come with their donations when we are open in order to avoid vandalism,” said White. “We’ve run into a few situations where we have found people rummaging through the donations that have been dropped off when no one else is around.” As well as supplying clothing and furniture to 150 families per month on a referral-only basis, the ECFD is a training facility that helps Centra Cam clients develop and maintain employment skills. The community service is non-funded, and therefore relies on donations, financial gifts and small service fees in order to remain in operation. A $4 service donation is requested from those community members who are receiving donations. “Even though the items we provide to families are all obtained through community donations we still need funds to operate and to cover the overhead cost,” states the ECFD website. “We try to raise operational funds by selling the non-emergency items we receive, such as books, sports equipment and other miscellaneous items at our Outlet Store. We also sell rags, which are cut from unusable clothing. In order to continue to operate we need the support of corporate sponsors, foundations and monetary donations from the communities that access the facility.” Over the past years the ECFD has provided services to more than 13,000 needy families and individuals who have experienced a natural disaster or turmoil in their lives through fire, tornado, marriage breakdown, abuse, addictions or unsupported disabilities. The families and individuals may have limited or no income. The Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot is located at 4918-46 Street, Camrose.
