What is a “neutral” color? by Judy McLean

What is a “neutral” color? Most people would say that white, black and grey are neutral because they do not seem to have any identifiable colors in them. But in the realm of interior design and color coordination, a “neutral” color generally refers to the color which is most predominantly used in a color scheme. A neutral color, in this sense, usually implies that it is the “canvas” on which other coordinating colors are applied. Neutral colors can be light in tone or dark. Brown has been a “neutral” for many years because it provides a background for many earth tones (golds, greens, russets). But it is widely known that creams, beiges, taupes and browns can be pink, yellow, green or peach based. Where brown can be slightly more forgiving in nature, grey is not – possibly because the undertones of grey are not as easily recognized. There are blue-greys, green-greys, purple greys and brown-greys and they don’t play well together!

MoneySense ranks Camrose as one of the best Canadian cities in which to live By Dan Jensen

Camrose has been identified as the 19th best small-sized city and the 40th best city overall in MoneySense magazine’s annual Best Places to Live in Canada ranking. St. Albert came in as the number one city, followed by Calgary at number two. MoneySense ranked 201 communities according to 34 different factors, including total population, population growth from 2008 to 2013, rate of unemployment, average household and average discretionary income, average household net worth, average house prices, average years to buy a home, property tax, income tax, new cars, the percentage of residents who bike to work, precipitation and days of the year with above zero temperatures. “We’ve come up quite a bit from the rankings last year,” said City of Camrose economic development officer Ray Telford. “I know we were a lot lower than 40th overall the last time they did this.” Telford appreciates the fact that the ranking of communities was based on hard statistics. “Anyone who has been to Camrose knows that we have great trails and a very good life, but this ranking is based on statistics which are more concrete,” said Telford. The magazine notes that Camrose population has grown by 6.6 per cent over the past six years to 18,435, and that the property tax rate is a low 1.99 per cent. “Out of the 40 communities that were ranked we are in the top ten for lowest property tax rates,” said Telford. “Our average property taxes here are $1,600, which is pretty decent compared to the taxes you see in other communities.” The magazine also notes that 14 per cent of the cars in Camrose are new, that the city has two doctors per 1,000 people, and that the average household income is $79,369. “I thought our average income here was high, but when you look at other cities it is even more,” said Telford. The rate of unemployment was recorded as 5.9 per cent. “The unemployment rates ranged from 4.2 per cent all the way to 7.7 per cent. St. Albert had a lower unemployment rate than us (four per cent) but our five per cent is still good,” said Telford. “It means for the businesses that there are more people who are available to work.” The average house price was reported to be $233,456, while the average discretionary income for residents was listed at $42,082.78. Railway Station and Park seeking volunteers By Dan Jensen

The Canadian Heritage Railway Station and Park is seeking volunteers to assist with getting its gardens ready for the busy summer season. The station will be conducting a number of work bees this spring in which participants will be invited to explore their passion for gardening with other likeminded individuals while learning positive methodology from an experienced gardener. “They will be able to help plant our Victory Garden following the guidelines of companion planting to control pests and diseases and adopt a garden as their own” explained Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park volunteer curator Glenys Smith. The gardens at the station are patterned after the gardens of this area’s first pioneers. “Specifically, the north gardens are patterned after the historic Station Garden at Victoria Beach, Manitoba,” said station volunteer Eleanor White. “Our new

Victory Garden is patterned after the numerous Victory Gardens planted during the World Wars, when people were invited to grow as much as they could so more canned provisions could be sent to the soldiers. All gardens follow organic practices, whether flower or vegetable. All require maintenance and offer a wonderful learning environment.” The station is hoping to have all gardens in top shape for its annual Garden Tour and Victorian tea/luncheon, which will be held on Saturday, July 12. “It’s going to be a wonderful opportunity to view local gardens and gain ideas and inspiration for your own,” said Smith. “We’re going to be providing a map of the different gardens they can visit, all of which will be within or just outside of Camrose.” The tea that follows will have a Tuscan theme. The station is appealing to generous Camrose homeowners who are willing to display their gardens and is welcoming recommenda-

tions for any potential tour stops. “If someone you know has a nice garden we would appreciate receiving a phone call,” said Smith. The station is taking bookings for pre-school, ECS and Grade 4 educational programs it will be offering during the months of May and June. “We offer very active, hands-on programs that span the curriculum components in the language arts, social studies and science curriculums,” said White. The station will also be conducting two new programs for the fall of 2014. Seeds, Seeds, Seeds complements the Grade 4 science curriculum, while Fallen Leaves has been designed for the Grade 6 art and science curriculums. Classes that are interested in piloting the programs are encouraged to call the station at 780-672-3099 or email White at white.eleanor@gmail.com. The station is planning to offer an organic master gardener course in conjunc-

tion with Gaia College from January to March, 2015. “The course is geared to every adult gardener no matter what level of experience he or she may have,” said White, adding that most of the courses (with the exception of one Saturday practicum) will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. “It explores the basic principles and practices or organic methods.” Class sizes will be capped at 15 to keep the learning fun, interactive and personal. For registration to secure your spot, contact the station or White. Visitors to the station on May 31 will have the opportunity to purchase or swap some of the many plants that grow so abundantly in the gardens. Also available will be house plants and seasonal white elephant items. The station will partner with the Camrose Arts Society on June 24 to host a National Aboriginal Day celebration. An aboriginal group will be performing dances and telling stories in the morning and afternoon. Other events will

include a Children’s Train Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 26, a Tribute to Prairie Women on Aug. 2, and a Founders Days festival Aug. 16. The last day of the regular season will be Aug. 30. The Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park is committed to becoming a small part of the much larger movement of promoting the principles of permaculture that embrace organic gardening practices through education, modelling and special events. “We would love it if you just drop in to enjoy the gardens,” said White. “This is an area in our city to be enjoyed year long. Come and do your art work, meditate, practice your craft, participate in a retreat or hold a family event while opening yourself up to the positive energies generated in our gardens. We celebrate in your enjoyment.” The station is open throughout the summer (starting this year on May 17) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special desserts are served throughout July and August from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Special Resolution Motion is provided below: BE IT RESOLVED THAT Having been presented with the Amalgamation Agreement for the amalgamation of the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. and the Caisse Horizon Credit Union Ltd. and upon hearing the recommendation of the Board of Directors of the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. that it is in the best interest of the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. to enter into the Amalgamation Agreement and to continue operations as the amalgamated credit union*, the members approve the Amalgamation Agreement. Summary of the Amalgamation Agreement: The Amalgamation Agreement means and contains the terms and conditions upon which the Battle River Credit Union Ltd. (“Battle River”) will amalgamate their members and business with the Caisse Horizon Credit Union Ltd. (“Horizon”) in accordance with the Credit Union Act (Alberta).

The board of directors of both Battle River and Horizon have completed the necessary due diligence and they are recommending that the members of Battle River and Horizon approve the Amalgamation Agreement. The proposed new credit union will create a +$800 million credit union serving the needs of 23,000 members through seventeen full-service locations. The new credit union will operate under a new name that will be identified in March 2014 and will take effect May 1, 2014. The proposed merger has the unanimous support of the Boards of Directors of both Battle River and Horizon credit unions. The shared future vision is a credit union that is operationally competitive and differentiated through its service levels and support for community. The members of Battle River and Horizon will immediately benefit from a larger and more diverse credit union that is able to offer a broader range of products and services including access to specialized resources, wealth and advisory services and greater depth in the area of agricultural lending. Horizon’s staff and members will benefit from a larger and more robust management team that will provide executive leadership to the credit union’s various functions and business lines. The new credit union will have the capacity to increase its support for risk management and administrative functions to ensure that the assets of members are even better protected in the future than they are today. Finally, the merger will create new economies of scale that will drive enhanced profitability and the ability to invest in expanded services and/or returns for the members. The amalgamated credit union will have seventeen branches located throughout north central and north west Alberta, comprised of the current eleven Battle River branches and the current six Horizon branches (the “Amalco*”). Consistent with prudent business practices all business areas of Amalco will be assessed for viability on an ongoing basis. Should Amalco discover that any one business area is not contributing to the corporate goals and strategy, the Board may elect to discontinue this business area of the Amalco operations. The Amalgamation Agreement also includes the bylaws for the Amalco. The bylaws are available at your local branch. The board of directors of Battle River and Horizon have recommended the bylaws for the Amalco for member approval. The board of directors of the Amalco will continue to be elected from Battle River and Horizon service areas, and represent all regions. The Board will initially consist of 12 members. The Members of both Battle River and Horizon will become members of the Amalco with all of the rights and privileges they currently enjoy. The Amalco will continue to operate under the existing management structure. The head office for the Amalco will be located in Camrose, Alberta and the current CEO of Horizon will take on the position of Vice President North. Battle River is currently the highest ranking credit union in the province in terms of capital levels. Horizon has a strong foundation of loyal members and talented staff and the communities Horizon serves present growth opportunities for the future. Horizon lacks the economies of scale and resources that will be necessary to adequately invest in the future, given the increasingly competitive market. The combined assets of Battle River and Horizon will result in a $800 million credit union which will be the second highest ranked credit union in terms of capital levels, serving over 25,000 members. The transition cost to complete the amalgamation, including professional fees, amalgamation of internal systems, branding, signage, and related cost is estimated to be $1,000,000.00. Currently members of Battle River each hold one share at par value of $1 per share and Horizon members hold 25 shares at a par value of $1 per share. Following the amalgamation there will be a mandatory redemption of 24 shares for each Horizon member. The total cost of this redemption will be approximately $120,000.00. If approved by the members of both Horizon and Battle River the Amalgamation Agreement would take effect on May 1, 2014. A copy of the complete Amalgamation Agreement will be available at the Battle River Annual General Meeting and the Horizon Annual General Meeting. *The proposed name of the Amalco will be presented at the Annual General Meeting.

Warrant officer second-class Alex Hansen is sporting a new medal on his uniform. The six-year member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Camrose has been awarded the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s bronze medal for achievements in the primary areas of community service, skill development, physical recreation and adventurous journey. “In pursuing these activities, young people learn responsibility, acquire new skills, and increase their level of physical fitness,” said the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award website. “In achieving the goals they set for themselves, participants demonstrate their commitment, motivation, and personal development.” After paying an initial registration fee to join the program, Hansen set to work logging all of the activities required in order to be considered medal eligible. “He had to complete a log book as proof that he had fulfilled the requirements and have it signed by a member of the cadet program or someone else, such as a teacher, who was knowledgeable and experienced in that particular area,” explained Royal Canadian Air Cadets commanding officer Dan Fontaine. Hansen had free choice in the selection of the locally available options within the four sections. “The award concept is one of individual challenge,” said the website. “It presents to young people a balanced, non-competitive programme of voluntary activities which encourages personal development and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility to themselves, and service to the community. Reaching the bronze medal takes a minimum of six months. “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program is separate from the cadet program, so it is something that he had to totally coordinate himself,” said Fontaine. “The award is recognized by the cadet program so the medal that he has earned can be worn on his cadet uniform.” Hansen is a highly motivated to get the most out of the cadet program that he can. He is considered a subject matter expert who has been trained as an instructor in the areas of air crew survival, physical fitness and marksmanship (he will be teaching at a camp this summer), and has earned several other medals, including the Lord Strathcona Medal for Physical Fitness and Excellence, the Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence, and the Cadet Long Service Medal for four years as a cadet. “You just have to look at his uniform to see his achievements,” said Fontaine. Hansen, who is 17, is currently working on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award silver medal. He has until age 24 to reach the award’s gold level. The gold medal is presented by the Duke of Edinburgh himself or a member of the royal family during one of his or her visits to Canada. “Very few cadets pursue the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and those that do, some of them never finish,” said Fontaine. “It is not our job as cadet leaders to arrange the events for them – they have to do that themselves. They have to arrange them, complete them and log them and when they have done that submit the logs in the four different areas.”

Mr. Henrickson’s letter published in the Feb. 25 issue of The Camrose Booster shows an ignorance of history and a dependence on several false myths. A myth defined is an idea or story that is believed by many people that is not true. The myths that he claims are history and not based from a study of the past; instead, they are based on his definition of the past. My initial reaction to Mr. Hendrickson’s letter was anger due to the complete disdain and disrespect for the aboriginal peoples, their culture, language and contributions to the rich history of this great country. Firstly, the nomaic lifestyle of the aboriginal peoples was very purposeful. They followed their food sources and moved to different locations with the changing seasons; demarcated boundaries were simply not applicable. Secondly, residential schools are very much a physical link between the present and the past. My mother was a victim of the “education of the uneducated”, forced upon young children in residential schools. There is not enough room in this column to tell of the damage, both physical and

psychological, that many claim these victims should “get over.” It is a terrible thing to be made ashamed of your family, language, and your very existence. Finally, Mr. Hendrickson calls Maskwacis “Muskrat Cheese.” His dismissiveness is simply offensive. The community called Hobbema was named after a German landscape painter by a CPR official. Maskwacis is the Cree word for “Bear Hills” and that name reflects the pride the local people have in their aboriginal culture. Their cultural revival consists of life experiences of our ancestors, historical facts, not myths, related through story telling passed down through many generations. I am proudly a part of that cultural revival. As a tax-paying, gainfully employed citizen of Camrose, I respectfully disagree with the opinions expressed in Mr. Hendrickson’s letter. I wish to respond to the malicious and false accusations Sean Moore threw against me (March 11). He says I “implied that the residential school system was somehow beneficial and instrumental to uplifting generations of Aboriginal children,” and that “such a claim is simply preposterous.” I made no such claim; those are his words, not mine. Somehow beneficial? What is preposterous is the idea that the residential school system could have been in no way beneficial. He a school teacher has no idea how ensuring that youngsters attend school could have been beneficial? That some students were very abused in residential

schools certainly does not mean all would have been better off if they had never been there. He also refers to “the societal benefits that Mr. Hendrickson describes.” I described no societal benefits. The specific beneficiaries I did explicitly point to (not a vague “somehow”) were native leaders who got an education in such schools. I guess it is too politically incorrect (i.e. not left wing enough) to indicate even one possibly positive contribution of residential schools. He calls me racist when I question some of the stories concocted by activist Indians and professors, like a new name and meaning for “Camrose.” Such redefining of our places and their past deserves to be mocked, though of course one must be sure never to object in any way if it happens to be an Indian idea. Because to dare question anything that is Indian “Culture” is to be as he calls my letter “repugnant and mean-spirited,” and an occasion to smear me as “an up-to-date example” like unto the infamous neoNazi and Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel. He admits it is “my distaste for his opinion” that is the basis of his personal attack. What is truly racist and not merely a difference of opinion that one can throw that epithet at, is his and the good professor’s (whose garbage I was objecting to) seemingly overwhelming desire to keep viewing and treating people on the basis of their race. So long as race consciousness as demonstrated by Moore and Melancon dominates our educational institutions I predict there will be no definitive tranquility between those of different skin colors. Telford said he plans to use the rankings in City of Camrose marketing materials. “I will be definitely showing it to people who are thinking of setting up a business or moving into the city. We are trying to spread the message that Camrose is not just a good place for seniors but for families as well.” Nearly half of the top 40 communities on the Best Places to Live ranking were from west of Winnipeg. “It’s no fluke,” said Mark Brown, from MoneySense. “Consider what is happening in cities like Calgary. It was only a matter of time. After seeing them successfully carry off other major productions like The Sound of Music, The Music Man and Oliver, it seemed only natural that the Churchmice Players would someday choose to perform Fiddler on the Roof. The musical, based on the book by Joseph Stein, with music by Jerry Bock, will be staged at the Norsemen Inn from March 21 to April 5. Dinner theatre productions will be held March 21 and 22, March 28 and 29 and April 4 and 5. Doors will open at 6 followed by the dinner at 6:30 and the show at 7:30 p.m. Matinee shows will be held March 23 and 30. Doors will open at 1, with the show at 1:30 p.m. Fiddler on the Roof follows a Jewish family living near Kiev in the pre-revolutionary Russia of the Czars. The story centers on Tevye, the town’s milkman and father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while battling outside influences. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters – each one’s choice of husband moves further away from the customs of his faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. “It is a classic musical that is very relevant right

now with what is going on the Ukraine,” explained director Sylvia Lyon, who has been in charge of such other Churchmice Productions as Music Man, Oliver, Dracula, Miracle on 34th Street and Guys and Dolls. High in energy, Fiddler on the Roof includes a number of Russian-flavoured dance scenes. It also has some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear, including Sunrise Sunset – a song that is performed at many weddings – and the lively yet contemplative If I Were a Rich Man. The Churchmice Players started auditioning for Fiddler on the Roof last September, and began rehearsals in September. The 45-member cast of mainly adults (there are three or four children under the age of 10) is larger than usual for a Churchmice production. “There was a great deal of interest from the community and a lot of people came out to audition,” said Lyon. “Since this is community theatre we tried to get as many people involved as we could.” Brian Dumont plays the lead role of the father, Tevye, while Tanya Nease stars as the mother. “Brian is doing a wonderful job,” said Lyon. “He has an excellent voice and he has starred in a couple of other Churchmice productions.” Costumes for the musical have been designed by Kathy MacInnis. “Kathy has been doing the costumes for the last

four or five Churchmice productions and been doing an excellent job,” said Lyon. “Everything has been researching what the costumes should look like. We have tried our best to get the clothes that would suit that time and area. The comments we have received so far are that the costumes are very authentic.” Theo Thirsk is in charge of designing the set, which members of the cast will be painting this week. “One of the challenges we have as a theatre group is that we don’t have a place to build the set so it won’t be ready until the week before opening night,” said Lyon. “The drawback with that is that the cast doesn’t get a chance to work around it (set) very much.” A lt hou gh t he Churchmice Players conducted their Christmas play, A Christmas Story, at the Bailey Theatre, they have decided to conduct Fiddler on the Roof at the Norsemen Inn because of the larger stage and the solid past record it has of hosting successful dinner theatres. “The performing arts centre will have a stage suitable for us to host our larger productions, but it won’t be able to host dinner theatres,” said Lyon. You can raise money for a good cause while watching five great films during the Midnight Movie Marathon at Duggan Cinemas starting at about midnight on Saturday, March 29 and ending mid-morning on Sunday. Movie marathon participants will seek pledges from friends, family and businesses to raise funds for the Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF). â&#x20AC;&#x153;This helps us create more exposure for the BRCF. We want the youth and their parents to understand that the foundation helps a lot of organizations and people,â&#x20AC;? said Imogene Walsh BRCF director. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to spread the word that the BRCF is not just about Camrose, but that it has a far reaching effect in the surrounding area.â&#x20AC;? The BRCF supports and donates to many charities and projects beyond Camrose County. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are working with the Killam community to have youth groups become involved with the movie marathon,â&#x20AC;? said Imogene. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a great way for them to get involved and see the benefits of the funds going back into projects.â&#x20AC;? Kodiaks eliminated from playoffs in four games By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks were knocked out of the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs by a soaring Canmore Eagles squad on March 10. The two evenly-matched teams were only separated by a few breaks and a one-sided first period in the final game. The Eagles bombarded Camrose with five straight tallies in game four of the series to eliminate the bears. Simon Philp garnered a hat trick to lead Canmore to a 5-3 victory. The Kodiaks rallied late in the second and in the final frame to pull within two goals, but Canmore hung on to win the game and won the series 3-1. Braedon Salverda, Nelson Gadoury and Dallas Bergstrom scored for Camrose. Gadoury was named the star of the game and he helped set up Bergstrom’s marker. Devin McDonald and Matt Zentner shared the goaltending duties. McDonald stopped 16 of 19 and Zentner turned away four of six shots in the Camrose cage. In game three March 9, Camrose lost a tough 3-2 decision in overtime. Spencer Kryczka and Ryker Leer provided the offence, while McDoanld was solid in net with 32 saves on 35 shots. The Kodiaks edged Canmore 2-1 in the second game as Gadoury scored twice and McDonald stopped 20 of 21 shots fired in his direction on March 7. Canmore won the opening game 1-0, March 6. Bear facts

The Kodiaks will be losing Luc Vandale, Connor Maley, Ryan Huolt, Matt Waseylenko and Tanner Tyndall off the roster for next season because of age restrictions.

Vikings take on Trojans in ACAC semifinals By Murray Green In the semifinal series, SAIT broke the hearts of the Augustana Vikings by winning two straight 2-1 games. Both game winners were scored on the power play. Kenny Bradley netted both of the Augustana goals and goalie Andy Williams played well despite the losses. The Vikings may have played one more game then they wanted to in the first round, but the result was still positive as they advanced to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference semifinals in hockey. Augustana defeated Portage 8-3, lost 5-4 in overtime and won 6-5 in the first game to win the best-of-three series on home ice. Centre Kenny Bradley collected a hat trick to pace the Vikings’ attack in the final contest. Scott Aucion connected on two tallies and single markers were added by Mathew Foster, Godric Tham and Dane Bonish. “In a best of three series anything can happen. We wanted to jump on them early in the series on home ice and we did that. They always play hard at home, so we knew that we were in for a game,” explained Kenny Bradley. “We got an early lead and didn’t think they would come back, but they did. They earned those goals to come back in the game. We got into a little bit of a lull. It was a wake up call and I think that will help us in the long run for the playoffs.” Although goalie Joel

pressure in the third period and in overtime. “It’s nice to end the series like that to give us confidence for the next one,” he said. “We won’t change much playing against SAIT. We have four lines going hard and playing well and we want to keep that rolling.” SAIT has a strong goalie in former Camrose Kodiaks player Brayden Hopfe and a solid power play unit.

“We have to drive the net hard and not let their special teams determine the outcome. We have to stay away from the penalty box because their power play will be going,” Kenny said. In the past three years, Augustana won the first playoff series and SAIT came out on top last year. “We have a little bit of revenge going for us,” said Kenny. “We have a pretty good rivalry going. It’s going to be tight, especially in a short best of three series.” The Vikings refocused on defence. “We had a whole week to prepare for SAIT, so it gave us a chance to work on that and get healthy again,” said Kenny. All playoff series, including the finals, will be a best of three format. The regular season expanded when Red Deer entered the league, but the sacrifice was the shortening of each playoff series. The Augustana second round games were slated for March 14, 15 and 16. Basketball The Augustana Vikings’ silver medal winning women’s basketball team and the golden Grant MacEwan Griffins represented Alberta at nationals on March 12 to 15, in Champlain College StLambert, Longueuil, Quebec. The wild card Vikings drew the powerful and number one ranked Nomades de Montmorency in the second game on March 13.

Kiwanis Club names Marcinkowski this year’s Top Cop By Murray Green

The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club honoured Camrose Police Service staff sergeant Rick Marcinkowski with the Top Cop award at a Camrose Golf Course banquet on March 1. “We are here tonight to honour a police officer that has transcended the stereotypical cop and he has given back to the community in spades,” said Kiwanis governor Roy Bird. “Our Kiwanis motto of serving the children of the world could be adopted to this officer who serves the children of Camrose. I thank the Kiwanis for honouring someone who doesn’t always receive the honour they deserve for the extra hard work they put into the community where they work and play.” Staff sergeant Marcinkowski has served in the police department for 31 years and is a communityminded citizen. As well as being dedicated to his job he has served minor sports as a coach and mentor, chaired the Camrose Mixed Slow Pitch Association, been a member of the Camrose Minor Hockey board, and assisted with DARE fundraising. “Volunteering comes second nature to us,” said Camrose Police Chief Darrell Kambeitz. “We are extremely proud that Rick is part of our organization. He is evidence of our community involvement. He is what community involvement is all about. He didn’t volunteer because he is a policeman, he did it because that is who he is. It is part

It’s a great honour that we have you not only

I feel this applies to our police service as they volunteer. That has a positive lasting effect on our youth.” Back in 1993 three police officers decided to volunteer together to coach a hockey team.

“We made a decision to co-coach a peewee house league team. Our shift work prevented us from individually coaching separate teams, however, collectively, we could share the responsibilities to give back to the community because volunteers helped us,” said Rick. “The players often performed beyond our expectations of what we asked them to do. This special bond led to five straight league titles.” The coaches stressed a team concept that would be useful later in life. “I strongly believed that it would help in a teamwork related environment. We wanted to prepare them for life after hockey and that hard work would be an advantage,” said Rick. “The impact that the members can have on youth in the community is indescribable. Criticism of the curriculum doesn’t add up says Johnson By Jeff Johnson, Minister of Education

Recently, much has been made of the government’s efforts to ensure that Alberta’s curriculum is more responsive to the many different ways in which students learn. I feel parents deserve to hear directly from me about my ministry’s efforts to ensure the provincial curriculum enables Alberta’s students to successfully compete in a dynamic, highly competitive world. Along with being the minister, I’m also a father of three children in the education system, and I too have experienced some of the frustrations expressed by parents in recent weeks. This is why I believe it is important for me to set the record straight about the anticipated reforms. I understand why some parents would be concerned with the allegation that mastery of the “basics” –skills such as arithmetic and reading – will play a less important role in the new curriculum than it did before. If this were the case, I would be concerned as well. But

fortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. I wish to assure parents that these basic skills will serve as the foundation and starting point of every change made to the curriculum. What they won’t be is the end point. Through inquiry-based learning, we’ll build upon these basic, foundational skills while developing additional skills that the business community and parents tell us are so critical. The conventional method of teaching fundamentals, whereby students rely heavily on memorization, versus a more engaged, inquirybased method are not mutually exclusive approaches to education. In fact, I believe it is crucial that we develop a curriculum that uses the best of both methods. However, surviving on mere memorization alone is a thing of the past. The modern economy demands creativity and problem solving, the application of critical thinking and an ability to collaborate and communicate. These skills lie at the heart of Alberta’s curriculum redesign process. Top performing educa-

tion jurisdictions, like Alberta, have increased their focus on these 21st century skills. We can’t ignore that without strong abilities in these areas, our kids will be left behind. But we also can’t ignore the concerns of parents. This is why we are responding in a thoughtful and collaborative manner. The redesign process is being led by parents, employers, teachers, students and school authorities, all of whom will be working together over the next two years to develop a curriculum that successfully weaves new competencies in with core skills like numeracy and literacy. Doing so will help reinforce literacy and numeracy across all subjects and better focus a curriculum that has ballooned to approximately 1400 outcomes. Despite recent criticism, parents should know and take comfort in the fact that according to the most recent international tests our K-12 students remain at the top of international rankings. Alberta’s overall results are tremendous-

ly positive. Out of the 74 jurisdictions from around the world that took part in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey, Alberta ranked 11th in math, 5th in reading, and 4th in science. Notably, Alberta’s 15 year olds are actually outperforming Alberta’s adults in these OECD rankings. Our strength and performance internationally is due in part to Alberta’s willingness to continually adapt. This year is a great example. In response to years of consultation and research, we recently launched some groundbreaking initiatives under Premier Redford. The new Dual Crediting Program, for instance, better integrates K-12, post-secondary and industry credentialing. The High School Flexibility Program empowers teachers to customize learning to better address individual student need. Eliminating Provincial Achievement Tests and implementing a more robust standardized assessment at the start of the school year will provide parents and teachers with better information on how

to tailor each child’s education going forward and help them measure improvement throughout the year. Curriculum needs to evolve as well. The days of a small group of educators taking 10 years to review curriculum one subject at a time are long over. We need to be more nimble and create curriculum that is more in tune with the local community and economy. Our curriculum must allow for creativity and excellence in teaching to shine through. We must embrace the individuality of the learner and ensure subject experts are teaching our kids. In short, our curriculum must become more relevant. We’ve been asked to listen and that’s exactly what we’re doing. But the truth is that Alberta is at the top because we have not been afraid to take action. I won’t apologize for putting the success of our children first but I also commit to continue listening in order to get it right. At the end of the day we must ask ourselves, are we preparing our children for their future or for our past?

Students realize dreams with help of community By Murray Green

The University of Alberta, Augustana Campus celebrated the 41st anniversary of the Community Awards Program, on Feb. 26. It was launched in 1973 to assist in making post-secondary studies possible for students with limited resources and to attract students. “Last year Berdie Fowler of the Camrose Booster, who along with her husband Bill were instrumental in starting this program, missed the awards night for the first time. She passed away last fall and was all things Augustana. She will be missed,” said Bonita Anderson, director of development. “In keeping with Olympic thoughts, although we have been resilient the last four decades, our growth and success over the last several years has been guided by a winning coach in Bree Urkow (development assistant at Augustana).” Bree responded to her role on making the evening a success and compared it to family. “We gather here on this special night to thank our donors, recognize the hard work of our students and share in the accomplishments in many individuals coming together who believe in similar goals. We have all become part of the Augustana extended family, creating our own culture and community, and I think we can all agree it is a great place to be part of,” said Bree. “Even with the challenges that Augustana, and all of post-secondary education, have faced in the last 12 months. Cuts in our funding has been considerable and yet I am pleased to let you know that Augustana

There are a lot of communities and institutions who are, and would be, very envious of what we have here and I really want to acknowledge the people in the community who have embraced students and have provided them with the support for all of these years,”

said Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minster Verlyn Olson. “It speaks to the relationship we have. I know the students very much appreciate the support you have from people who don’t even know you. That is very powerful.” Dr. Cheryl Bartlett was the Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and guest speaker. She came to Camrose from Duchess to complete her final two years of high school and her first year of university. She developed a passion for biology. After graduation, she

began teaching at Cape Breton University. Both the undergraduate program and Cheryl’s related research activities adopted Two-Eyed Seeing as a guiding principle. She has give more than 200 formal presentations on integrative science and two-eyed seeing to local and international audiences. “This is a very special evening. Special because of the students, community, donors, parents and faculty. I would really like to say thank you to all of those professors here who are so very influential. I don’t there

This institution has always had a reputation of taking care of it’s students. I had a work bursary (in the kitchen) and I was very grateful of that bursary.” Going to Camrose Lutheran College (now University of Alberta, Augustana Campus) prepared her for the future. “I had the opportunity to share my thoughts on twoeyed seeing with students over the last couple of days. Two-eyed seeing is a phrase form First Nations elders that was introduced to me that means: learn to see from your one eye with the strengths or the best of the indigenous ways of knowing and learn to see with your other eye with the strengths or the best of the western or mainstream ways of knowing,” she explained. “Most importantly of all, learn to see with both of those eyes together. This two-eyed seeing shows us to work together and bring our strengths together, which I think is one of the most important messages that Canada needs to here these days,” said Dr. Bartlett. “I am privileged and honoured to work with elders. When I first started working with the elders, they said lets put the traditional understanding of the indigenous people beside what you would normally would teach in the curriculum for science students. Nothing prepared me for the learning cliff that I was facing Here I had to almost start all over again.”

Augustana’s spring production reflects on importance of home A review by Jen Lindstrand

It has been twenty years since she moved from her family farm into a one bedroom apartment in Houston. Carrie Watts spends her days and nights dreaming of returning to her hometown of Bountiful. Past attempts at making this dream come true have been thwarted by her adult son, Ludie, and his domineering wife, Jesse Mae, but finally luck is on her side, or the stars align, or as Carrie would say, God was with her that day, in order to successfully get a ticket and onto a bus for the ride home to Bountiful. This is the setting and story of Horton Foote’s “A Trip to Bountiful”, directed by Paul ‘Sparky’ Johnson. The tone of the evening was set for the audience as they walked in; a bluegrass version of “Amazing Grace” and a collection of other old standard hymns and gospel songs played in the warmly lit theatre. The director’s notes pay beau-

tiful tribute to the history of the Augustana Theatre Centre itself and, in doing so, called on the audience to reflect on their own histories with buildings and personally sacred places. A feeling of wistful nostalgia was present in the space before the curtain rose and was carried through wonderfully by the cast until the end of the play. At first glance, the set for the show was simple, yet sufficient. Bare, black walls and minimal furniture highlighted the attention to details true to the era (1940s), including an old radio, chest of drawers, and several “motion picture” magazines. During the first set change we realize that the “simple” set is more complex in its design and function. A chorus of four effectively transitioned us from place to place, singing (acapella) as the set is moved behind them. These beautifully sung hymns are weaved throughout the play, enriching certain scenes,

serving as memories; a vocal soundtrack created by Monica Littleton, Joelle Skinner, Ian Skinner, and Jonathan Skinner. Elysia Marchand plays the role of Carrie Watts. Marchand embodies the elderly woman in a subtle and authentic way, easily bringing the audience in on her dreams of returning home. As she reminisces, we see her eyes shine and long for that place that means so much to her. Watts’ son, Ludie, is played by Dan Shepherd who was perfectly suited for the role. With ease, Shepherd depicts a submissive and compliant husband who eventually stands more confidently, embracing his emotions and memories with his mother. A striking contrast to these two characters is the role of Jesse Mae, a rather unlikeable, bossy woman. Aleisha Sommer brings Jesse Mae to life by portraying the character’s demanding selfishness, yet also shows, at times, a softness when

revealing her own insecurities, and as we get momentary glimpses of tenderness towards her mother-in-law. Another standout character is the sweet and caring Thelma, played by Renee Crawley, who joins Carrie for part of her journey home. Crawley adds a delightful brightness and warmth to the play; the connection she and Marchand create between their two characters is effortless and sincere, sharing a genuine kindness and support for one another that the audience is pleased to see take place. As director, Paul Johnson, states in the program, “Theatre holds a mirror up to society and invites audiences to collectively explore the issues springing up from that reflection.” A rich piece of theatre will offer up several themes to its audience, and “Bountiful” certainly does this with addressing issues of growing older, past regrets, connection to and care of the

land, as well as the powerful importance of home. The entire company does a great job presenting these themes, particularly in the last few scenes. In a few emotional, yet understated lines, the characters move the mirror closer to the audience. When speaking to her son about leaving Bountiful, Carrie affirms that although they left their home, they can never lose what that place has given to them. We are encouraged to reflect on those places that have formed us, filled us, nourished us, and healed us. Through this piece of theatre, we are moved to celebrate those memories of important spaces and the meaning they have in our lives. “The Trip to Bountiful” is playing at the Augustana Theatre Centre from Thursday to Saturday, March 13 to 15 and 20 to 22. Doors open at 7 p.m. Show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.

Tips for yoga beginners Though it might once have been considered a trend, yoga has long since moved on from trendy territory to become a more widely accepted discipline that is practiced by millions for its positive impact on mental and physical health. Allan Douglas Throndson December 21, 1927 – March 10, 2014 Allan Douglas Throndson was born on December 21, 1927 to Anton and Mary Throndson, on the farm near Armena. He was baptized and confirmed at Fridhem Lutheran Church. Allan married Viola Rasmussen on August 4, 1954 and together they raised three children. Allan passed away peacefully on March 10, 2014 at the age of 86 years in St. Mary’s Hospital. Growing up on the farm, Allan liked to play hockey and ball. He also enjoyed trapping weasels and playing tricks on his mother. He built a cabin and his own house – skills he learned building outhouses for the neighbours. Allan taught school for 30 years. His first year teaching was at Round Hill, where he taught 41 students in grades 3, 4 and 5. He also taught at Ferintosh, numerous schools in Camrose, and ended up at Chester Ronning School. He quit teaching for nine years and worked for Imperial Oil. However, the love of the classroom never left him, so he went back to teaching. Allan loved teaching, especially when it came to correcting his grandchildren’s grammar! Allan and Viola loved to travel and enjoyed many trips within Canada as well as trips to other countries. After retirement, they bought a place in Arizona where they enjoyed visiting old and new friends. Allan’s failing health caused him to be on dialysis for the last six-and-a-half years. He faced this challenge with courage and dignity. Allan always appreciated the excellent care he received from the staff at the Dialysis Unit and often commented that the nurses there “...must be just like angels”. The family is also extremely grateful for the care and support that Allan received during this time from friends and family. Allan leaves behind his wife Viola; children Valerie (Dale) Sims, Wendy (Frank) Marshall and Wayne (Janice); eight grandchildren Jonathan, Lindsay (Jaime) Aicken, Stephanie Sims, Erin, Brent and Kathryn Marshall, and Greg and Kristina Throndson; two great-grandchildren Jens and Kai Aicken; brothers Lyle (Carol) and Gerald (Marilyn); Rasmussen families; and numerous relatives and friends. Allan was predeceased by his parents; an infant son and infant daughter; sister Ruby; brothers Raynold, Wesley and Stanley; and an infant brother. We give thanks to God for the life of Allan – the joy, laughter and love that he brought into our lives. Rest in God’s Peace. A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from Bethel Lutheran Church (4102-73 Street, Camrose) with Rev. Bonnie Arends officiating. Camrose Police Service will be raising awareness about proper use of debit and credit cards as part of March Fraud Prevention Month. “We are cautioning local businesses to be more diligent with credit card transactions after three individuals were caught defrauding several businesses,” said Const. Matthew Wilton, forensic identification specialist and crime prevention officer. “This is an easy scam because when the card doesn’t work they offer a 16 digit number that does go through. The suspects manually entered, or had store staff enter stolen credit card numbers. “The card could be stolen, or the employee could input different numbers when the customer isn’t watching,” said Wilton. “The suspects could just go to retail establishments where they know that the numbers will be punched in. This is one case that awareness can really prevent fraud. Any

be done by a bank teller. Ask your customer service representative for more details. It is usually a quick change. I was even told that you can change your pin number at the drive-thru machine or the deposit machine in the entry on your own with a bank employee.” This new innovation is good for changing your numbers fast. “If you think you have been scammed, or your card is lost, go to the machine right away and change numbers,” said Wilton. “Even if it is 11 p.m. you can drive to the bank and change your pin number. Inquire at your

bank if they have that technology. Just a reminder to keep your card secure, in a protective sleeve, or make sure it is always in your site.” The Camrose Police Service offer suggestions to avoid becoming a victim of a scam or fraud. Do not give out personal information, over the phone or otherwise, unless you were the one to initiate contact and it is an organization you trust. Ask for written information about the person, business or charity. Ask for identification and registered charity numbers. Confirm the validity of the information you are given

by looking up their phone number and website yourself rather than using the information they offer you. Do not send any money or pay a fee to claim a prize. Be suspicious if this is a today only offer. If it is truly a legitimate deal, it will be there tomorrow. The Camrose PCN announced its continued partnership with the Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition for another year with the Virtual Trek. The partnership began in 2013. The Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition is comprised of local community members representing various clubs, organizations, businesses, agencies and individuals whose collective efforts aim to achieve a healthier Camrose for all. This coalition is very excited to partner with the Camrose PCN’s “Goin’ for a Jaunt” virtual trek, as this initiative increases awareness and motivates others to be more physically active. For 2014, the coalition decided to offer support and resources to an identified community group/organization/school through its efforts in the virtual trek. Out of a draw of several community groups/organizations/schools, PACE Outreach School was selected. The students at PACE are very excited to take part in the trek and have been very diligent in tracking their activities so far. Throughout the Virtual Trek, which runs until April 18 the coalition will be providing weekly draw prizes for the students at PACE who are participating in the virtual trek. All of the draw prizes have a ‘healthy lifestyle’ theme and are intended to keep the students motivated to stay active and continue their success throughout the virtual trek. The coalition is also planning a lunch celebration for the PACE students at the end of the trek to celebrate their commitment to healthy living. “The PCN is very happy to once again partner with Camrose Healthy Lifestyle Coalition,” said Stacey Strilchuk, Camrose PCN executive director. “The Camrose PCN physicians recognize the importance of collaborating with community partners in a way that is meaningful and relevant to individuals in their journey towards health and well-being.” The Goin’ for a Jaunt Virtual Trek is open to everyone. The Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013 by presenting outstanding volunteer awards to Camrosians Nan Shute and Lyle Erga for the more than 20 years they have spent guiding and supporting the organization. The Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association was started in 1963 as a way to support the needs of its retired members, both socially and in day-to-day living. “ARTA became a voice to advocate for retired teachers to governments, as well as to other organizations across the country and locally,” said Erga. “Health issues were always foremost. From a model in Ontario a health insurance plan was developed. This plan has grown rapidly to provide many benefits, including excellent travel insurance. There are also house, car and life insurance plans available. The benefits are so efficient and advantageous that numerous non-teacher groups have been accommodated.” The ARTA currently has a membership that is approaching 14,000. Volunteers have worked hard over the years for benefits enjoyed by many. “Many excellent administrators have guided the vision from 1963,” said Erga.

Stasko shares importance of organ donation By Dan Jensen

Kathy Stasko offered a moving reminder of the importance of organ donation at the Kidney Foundation of Canada Camrose pioneer celebration dinner Feb. 19. The organs and tissues of Kathy’s youngest son, Kerry, were used to save or improve the lives of 40 people after he died from brain injury suffered on a drilling rig near Caroline at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary in July, 1997. Kerry and his brother were introduced to the subject of organ donation by his grandmother, who, before her death from cancer in 1996, sent them an article entitled Remember Me, in which the author gave instructions on what she wanted to be done with her body when she passed away. The author concluded by saying if they do all that she asked she will live forever. “We discussed at length what we might do if anything happened to one of us and we all signed our donor cards,” said Kathy. Shortly after Kerry’s death, the Stasko family received a letter from the coordinator from the human organ procurement and exchange program sharing how Kerry’s organs and tissues had been used. “It validated his decision totally,” said Kathy. “This information was shared at the celebration of life held to honour Kerry, providing comfort to both family and friends.” Kerry’s heart was transplanted into a 57-year-old man from the Edmonton area who, without the donation, would have succumbed to death himself. His liver was transplanted into a 40-year-old from the Edmonton area, while his pancreas was used for the pancreatic ilet program. His two kidneys were

transplanted into two Calgary residents, a 14-year-old and 40-year-old, enabling them to be free of dialysis that they were receiving three days a week. His lungs were transplanted into a 22-year-old father in Manitoba who, without them, would have succumbed to death. His bones were used to do bone grafting in the Calgary area, while his veins were preserved for those who needed coronary artery bypass grafting, as well as transplantation into the legs of individuals with poor

peripheral vascular circulation (they would have otherwise needed amputation). His knees and achilles tendons were saved for partial knee and achilles tendon transplants. The Staskos received a letter from the family of the 14-year-old who received one of Kerry’s kidneys, stating the blessing it was for her. “Everything from the start was such a big mountain for her to climb,” said the family. “As soon as she received her kidney donation she was up and about. Noth-

ing will ever bring your son back and the loss of a child is a tragic sorrow to you parents. We too came very close to this reality. I want the boy’s family to know how the life of a child was spared, to see how his life was renewed through hers, and for this we are very truly thankful.” The Staskos received regular updates from the heart recipient until he passed away after 5,958 days of new life. “We always celebrated his heart-a-versary but I know he cherished every one of those 5,958 days he got because of the transplant,” said the man’s daughter in a letter that let the Staskos know of his death. “In the last 16 years as I am sure you know from his letters, he retired, but not really, to his farm, with my mom. He walked me down the aisle. He was very proud when my sister graduated as a police officer. This past summer, my sister had a baby girl and he would make the 200 km round trip just for a cuddle. He treated my husband as the son he didn’t have. Most importantly, my mom was lucky enough to spend 45 years with a person she loved the most in this world. He was our biggest cheerleader in everything we did and spoiled us all rotten. We all thank you for this gift and send you our deepest sympathies for your loss.” Kathy encouraged everyone at the dinner who has been the recipient of a new kidney to drop a line to the donor’s family validating their decision. She also urged everyone to sign their donor card and discuss organ donation with other family members. “You don’t know when your what if will come,” she said.

Government makes it easier to donate organs The Redford government is making it easier for Albertans to register as organ donors, giving more hope to the hundreds in need of a life-changing transplant. Albertans will soon see wait times reduced for life-changing transplants with the proclamation of Bill 207, the Human Tissue and Organ Donation Amendment Act. The Act was originally introduced as a private member’s bill by MLA Len Webber. “Organ and tissue donation saves lives and we need to make sure Albertans know how important it is,” said Len Webber, MLA, Calgary-Foothills. “An online registry will make it easy for Albertans to provide their consent to donate, ensuring all Albertans who wish to donate make it known.”

The Act establishes a single agency to coordinate organ and tissue donations in Alberta, and creates a consent-to-donate registry. Albertans who are willing to donate their organs and/ or tissue will be able to do so either online or at their local registry when they go to renew their driver’s licence or other identification. “I want to thank MLA Len Webber for putting this vitally important legislation forward,” said Premier Alison Redford. “Our government is eager to do everything we can to reduce wait times for transplants and give Albertans in need access to the treatment that will save or drastically improve a life.” Minister of Health Fred Horne said the government wants to take aggressive action to increase tissue

and organ donation rates in Alberta. “By making it easier for Albertans to register their intent to donate and raise awareness of the need for donors, we can increase the number of organ donations in Alberta.” Up until the new Act was proclaimed, consent to donate needed to be provided in writing, dated, signed and witnessed, to be legally binding. Albertans could also sign the “Universal Donor Card” on the back of the government issued Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan card. Under the new Act, Albertans renewing their driver’s licences or other pieces of identification will be asked if they consent the donation of his or her tissue, organs or body. They then provide written consent, and the registry agent

transmits that information to the Alberta Organ and Tissue Donation Agency for inclusion in the online registry. The applicant will then receive a sticker that can be put on the driver’s licence or other identification to indicate they are a donor. Albertans will also be able to directly register online. “We are so pleased that the Government of Alberta listened to our concerns,” said Nancy MacDonald, Alberta Donates LIFE Coalition. “The sad fact is that many Albertans on organ donation wait lists die before a donor is found. This Bill will make a big difference in the lives of many Albertans waiting for transplants.” Alberta used to have 17 donors per one million of the population, but that has fallen over the past decade to less than 10. Ontario and

British Columbia both outperformed Alberta with a donor rate of 16.3 donors per million and 11.8 donors per million, respectively, in 2011. Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba have implemented online registries. While donor rates fluctuate, these provinces have successfully raised the public profile of the need to donate. The donation coordination agency is scheduled to be operational by 2015, with full IT system integration across the province within three to five years. Under the Building Alberta Plan, the government is investing in families and communities, living within its means, and opening new markets for Alberta’s resources to ensure it is able to fund the services that Albertans feel matter the most

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $1,000 to the Camrose Association for Community Living for the education of the community on brain prevention injuries. The grant was made possible by the Aspenes Family Fund for Brain Injury Prevention and the Foundation’s community funds. CAFCL works with adults who have acquired brain injuries severe head trauma – possibly through a skiing or vehicle accident or maybe a stroke. “Imagine the frustration of these individuals who can no longer do simple daily tasks as they have always achieved simply due to an injury to their brain,” said CAFCL executive director Esther McDonald. “We have trained staff who help people work through the skills they are re-building, but also the frustration that goes along with it.” The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Foundation are made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Some grant funding is also made available by generous donors who make annual gifts to the Battle River Community Foundation.
