French school prepares for fall start By Murray Green
Camrose will soon have an all-French school. The school will be opening in September with students from pre-school to Grade 6. Conseil scolaire CentreNord (Greater North Central Francophone Education Region No.2) has given local parents the green light for launching the elementary school. “I’m originally from Quebec, and my mother tongue is French. I want my children to learn both languages and to identify themselves with both cultures,” said organizer Malorie Aubé. “I want them to be 100 per cent anglophone and 100 per cent francophone and have the best of both. You always want the best for your children.” Conseil scolaire CentreNord is the largest francophone school district in Alberta with 2,500 students attending 14 francophone schools in Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Jasper, Legal, Red Deer, St. Albert and Wainwright. Camrose is now being added to the list with funding now in place. “We started discussions about a year ago to find out what we needed,” said Malorie. “My children took advantage of the French immersion program at Ecole Sifton School last year, but we moved out to the country and I have been home schooling them this year. I wanted to know the difference between French immersion and a francophone school. Camrose has the population and room in the community for both.” Fully funded by the Alberta Government, the francophone schools offer academic programs from kindergarten to Grade 12 in accordance with the curriculum set out by Alberta Education. “There are four school districts in Alberta. As rightholders, we have a right to have a school if the numbers warrant. The law says where the numbers are justified and

does not mention an exact number,” Malorie said. The schools offer free bus transportation within the designated zone, a full-time everyday kindergarten program, on-site preschool and the possibility of daycare/ after-school care in various schools. “We are going to start with pre-school to Grade 6 and work ourselves up by adding a grade every year. After a year, we hope to add Grade 7 so we can keep the students that started at our school,” said Malorie. French first language education is intended for children who are eligible under section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Studies and experience have shown that francophone schooling is the most effective way for a francophone child living in a minority setting to become highly proficient in French and in English. “We have about 30 students who have indicated they will register for our school and we haven’t spread
the word yet. We had to show the school board that we had support, so that’s why we know that we should at least start at 30 students. We haven’t even approached people in Wetaskiwin or surrounding communities. We have a radius of 50 kilometres to draw from. We could have 40 to 50 students the first year,” shared Malorie. “We are trying to be respectful of Sifton School and not jeopardize their program by drawing too many of their students. We are simply offering a choice.” Grade 3 students will start to receive English classes, as planned by the provincial curriculum, in an effort to give the children an opportunity to be proficient in Canada’s official languages. “Right now we have openings for a principal/ teacher, three teachers, a preschool leader and a secretary/ librarian, so six staff in total. We will provide new jobs and an investment into the community. We hope to attract families to Camrose so they don’t have to go to the big city
to receive francophone education,” added Malorie. Malorie formalized a request to open a francophone school in Camrose in the fall and the board approved the request later on. The minister of education has been informed of its intention to open a francophone elementary school in Camrose for the 2014-15 school year. Trustees adopted the new school’s catchment area, including surrounding communities and Wetaskiwin. The board is looking to lease the old Gardner College to set up the school. “The board of directors from the Open Door is working with us on the school project. There are some details to still work out, but we are confident the former Gardner College will be home of Ecole Francophone de Camrose by September,” said Malorie. “We have some other work to be done by the start of the school year, but since Gardner was zoned as a school, it shouldn’t be a problem with the City.”
The school is open to everyone. “It is open to all families, even though Article 23 gives the right to have a school for francophones in a minority setting.” There is also an aspect of the law developed to re-establish the francophone culture because French wasn’t in schools for many years and generations of francophones have been lost. “The school is open to families without francophone roots but they need to understand the governance of the school will be in French,” said Malorie. Research shows that students that learn in both French and English tend to perform better in tests. “Students will be fluent in both languages and they will be better prepared to function in all regions of our country,” said Malorie. “The May 2015 Francophone Games will be held in Camrose, so we will be helping for the event. Sifton, Charlie Killam and Camrose Composite High School will be hosting the Games in their gyms. We expect at least 200 students to come to our community for the event.” Malorie sees the fact the new school won’t have a gym as an advantage. “We can take advantage of the community facilities for our physical education time. We have wonderful sport programs such as skiing that we can be involved with,” she said. School board administration negotiated an agreement with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Schools for the purchase of all equipment (furniture, boards, operating systems, etc.) currently at Académie St.André Academy in Beaumont. Some of the purchased items will be used to establish the school in Camrose. For more information contact the school board atwww.en.centrenord.ab.ca, or phone Malorie at 780-7812744.

This past Sunday, May 25, I had the pleasure of reliving a very enjoyable Camrose event, the Fly-In Breakfast. Many years ago, when my children were quite young, we made this an annual event. My children looked forward to the fly-in for two reasons – the yummy pancakes and sausages, plus the chance to get close to different kinds of “flying machines”. Since my children have grown and have somewhat lost the sense of the magic of flight, I haven’t attended the fly-in for several years. Lucky for me, I am now partnered with a pilot, and this gave me a chance to visit the fly-in again. We were served the same yummy breakfast with enthusiastic efficiency by the volunteers from the Camrose Fish and Game Association. We were sufficiently full of fluffy pancakes, perfectly cooked eggs, and that smoky goodness of sausage and ham. We were fascinated by the number and variety of aircraft that visited our small airport. The difference for me this year was that because I am now part of the pilot community by association, I could appreciate details that I never noticed before. Big kudos to the Camrose Flying Club, which directed and escorted the various pilots and their aircraft, no matter the kind, safely to parking areas for us landlubbers to get a closer look. It was amazing to see the intricacy of how the volunteer ground crew managed what was potentially chaos into a wellorchestrated parade in and out of the airport. This was further complicated by the fact there were hundreds of touring pedestrians wandering the field. But between the skilled ground crew and the respect of the viewers, accidents were avoided. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to make this event continue in its fantastic tradition. We are lucky in Camrose to have such a lovely facility like our airport, a wonderful event like
the Fly-In Breakfast, and a wealth of great volunteers. Yours truly, Donna Hackborn and Marv Miniely Looking forward to new school
The Bawlf Educational Support Team (BEST) and the Bawlf School Council are thrilled as we look forward to the opening of a new school in Bawlf in the fall of 2014. With the opening of the new school comes a new environment for students, as well as the opportunity for community members to supplement the essential equipment that’s being provided. We have set a goal to provide the latest 21st century learning tools to the school in a multifunctional media format. Display panels will not only be used in the gym as a scoreboard but will be throughout the school displaying internal news, video steaming, emergency alerts and more. What this technology will do is limited only by the imaginations of our 400 students. It will provide a whole new realm of learning opportunities, while also being functional for school operations. Since the new school is in a different location we will also need to look at developing our outdoor space to increase recreational opportunities for our children. This will include upgrading playground areas, ball diamonds, track facilities and fields of play. We believe that this school will offer exceptional learning opportunities to our students at home in their rural community. In the weeks and months ahead you will hear about many projects that are taking place to help our students, parents and community raise funds for these important 21st century tools. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbours in helping bring our new school to life! Sincerely, Tammy Albers Bawlf Educational Support Team (BEST) Who will you choose?
It has been a few months since I have felt a need to write a letter to the editor. I could not help myself when I was reading this article which I found in The Edmonton Journal. According to this article, which was written by Karen Kleiss in the March 31/2014 edition, the ruling PC Party and the Wildrose Alliance Party both earned around three million dollars in 2013. Now, there is a huge difference between the two Parties. On one hand, the Tories
finished 2013 with $946,000 in debt while on the other hand, the Wildrose Alliance Party has $430,000 in net assets and no debt. The Wildrose Alliance opposition brought in $3.07 million in contributions, and finished the year with a $27,000 surplus. The Wildrose Alliance has no debt. In 2013, the Tories brought in just under three million dollars ($2.86 million) in total revenue and ran a $136,000 deficit. I have seen on facebook someone questioning whether the Wildrose Alliance should be elected in the 2016 election because they are too Conservative. I always thought that Alberta was considered Conservative. I have this one question to ask Albertans before the next election. When electing your next government, which party would you choose to run your finances of your province? Would you vote for one who runs its financial books in the red or the one that not only pays its bills, but can keep its financial books in the black? This is just something for all of you who plan on voting in the next election to think on. The choice is up to you. Time will tell what Albertans will chose for their future. Lorne W.P Vanderwoude, Camrose Litter Clean-Up
Thank you to the many neighbours who helped with our second annual Augustana Neighbourhood Litter Clean-Up May 22. While these efforts will benefit those of us who live in the area, we also hope visitors will receive an inviting impression, whether they are from out of town and considering attending Augustana, visiting the Railway Museum, checking out progress on the Camrose Performing Arts Centre, or just enjoying a drive or a stroll through the area. Thanks also to the residents of Bethany’s Brookside condos and the ways they contribute to the spirit of the neighbourhood. Beyond exchanging friendly sidewalk greetings while out walking, some “Brooksiders” regularly pick up litter while on foot. Recently, we learned about a newly arrived couple who noticed litter in the ravine between their Brookside complex and Augustana – and quietly went about cleaning it up. What great examples these folks are! Continued on page 9

Pederson named top first year teacher in zone By Murray Green
Battle River School Division teacher Nathan Pederson was named the top first year teacher in this zone and earned the Edwin Parr award in Lacombe on May 26. The Edwin Parr Award was created to pay homage to the long-time teacher and school trustee by the Alberta School Boards’ Association. The Chester Ronning School teacher was nominated by principal Dan Cole with the support of the staff, and passed on to the school board. The BRSD then selected Mr. Pederson to represent them at the zone level. “Three evaluators (former teachers and administration) from the Alberta School Boards’ Association Edwin Parr nomination committee came into my class to see me teach in person then interview me afterwards,” he explained. “Mr. Cole let me know they put my name forward and I was both surprised and excited for my recognition in my first year. I really appreciated the nomination.” Nominees were outstanding in several areas of their work with students. A written nomination was submitted and then candidates made a verbal presentation at the ASBA banquet. The BRSD board backed the nomination. “I heard the board was sending in my nomination and I was appreciative of what they had to say and that they went to the award ceremony to support me,” Mr. Pederson added.
Teacher Nathan Pederson earned the Edwin Parr Award.
“It was an honour just to be nominated. I listened to the other speeches from the candidates and I thought they were all good and I would want to be in their classroom. I thought ‘what a great group of teachers’ and I was glad to make it that far. When my named was called, I was surprised again. I was also very honoured and grateful to be named the Edwin Parr recipient.” Edwin Parr represented the high standards and expectations of Alberta Education that all teachers are striving to meet. “He represents Alberta’s long rich history in excellence of teaching and this special award is a way of keeping his importance
throughout Alberta Education alive. Edwin Parr was a great ambassador for young teachers and for excellence in teaching,” Mr. Pederson explained. “University professors would speak of his high honour and this award that we could aspire to, but I never considered this award to be attainable. I did recognize that there is a lot of responsibility and pressure in teaching, so I would have to work hard to have a good start in the profession.” The Grade 5/6 split class teacher was inspired by his own teachers growing up in the Bawlf School. “I was fortunate to have many strong teachers to provide me with an excellent example of what great teach-
ing looked like. They showed me what great teaching and learning looked like in a classroom. They created a lot of positive memories and experiences for the students in that school. If I had the opportunity to recreate that again I think it would be great. In high school I started to work towards my goal of becoming a teacher.” Mr. Pederson didn’t have any teachers in his family, so he looked to his own teachers for guidance. After completing four years at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus, he spent two years in an after degree program at Concordia University to become an elementary teacher. “Concordia University has a good reputation of preparing its students for life in the career of teaching. They did a good job of preparing me for my career,” he said. “I finished my practicum at Sparling School and then I sent out resumes. My first interview was at Chester Ronning School. I was able to commit to them early and have enjoyed my decision. I was very fortunate to be with Battle River School Division, where I was a former student.” Mr. Cole and his staff quickly made the first year teacher welcome. “I have really enjoyed my first year. The staff here at Chester Ronning have been wonderful and supportive to make it an easier transition. The transition from student to teacher is a steep learning curve and the
staff made it smooth for me. Right from day one I wanted to make the experience in the classroom a positive one. Teaching a split class makes you pay attention even more to careful planning and you have to be strategic in delivering the content in a seamless manner. It has been an extra challenge.” Mr. Pederson spends a lot of time outside of school hours preparing his lessons. “A lot of teachers put in extra time. I’m told it will always be busy, but it does get easier. I have enjoyed my involvement in extracurricular activities like coaching, camera club, and school plays because those activities give me an opportunity to get to know more students at school and help provide memorable experiences that are an important part of the school year for students.” He doesn’t know what grade he will teach next year, but he hopes it will be back at Chester Ronning in Grade 4 or 5. “I like the Grade 4 to 6 range, but as a young teacher you go where you are needed. I enjoy being an elementary teacher because I like the variety of subjects each day.” The award winner went against seven other Zone 4 school divisions, including Clearview (Stettler area), Wolf Creek (Ponoka area), Red Deer Public and Red Deer Catholic school divisions, Chinook’s Edge (Olds area), Wetaskiwin and Wild Rose (Drayton Valley/Rocky Mountain House).
Celebration of Japanese culture this Friday By Dan Jensen
Grades 5 to 9 students from Sifton, Sparling, Chester Ronning and Jack Stuart Schools will join the mayor, members of City council, the Battle River School Division acting superintendent and BRSD trustees in a Camrose Japan Friendship Society hosted celebration of Japanese culture at Charlie Killam School this Friday, June 6. A program starting at 1:30 p.m. will feature performances by Booming Tree and the Wakaba-Kai Japanese Dance Group, both from Edmonton. Booming Tree is a professional contemporary drum duo that performs Taiko, the art of Japanese drumming. “We play to celebrate the strength and power of the human form,” states the Booming Tree website. “The drums we play are mostly all hand-made, and come from Japan, as well as from great makers in the United States and abroad. We also build some of our own equipment, including our new four-foot wide drum head, one of the largest in Canada.” The Wakaba-Kai Japa-
nese Dance Group was established in 1977 under the umbrella of the Edmonton Japanese Community Association to promote the understanding and awareness of the Japanese heritage. Through practice, members learn not only dance itself but also traditional music, manners, customs of Japanese culture and exercise. Twilla MacLeod, from Booming Tree, will sing “Sakura”, a traditional Japanese folk song depicting spring, the season of cherry blossoms, while being accompanied by Gregory Shimizu on drums. After an intermission, Booming Tree will give one student from each school the opportunity to play the large Japanese drums. The program will conclude with all students being invited to participate in Tanko-Bushi (Coal Miner’s Dance). “The Wakaba-Kai Japanese Dance Group will be demonstrating the dance and then teaching it to students,” said Camrose Japan Friendship Society president Michiko Rasmussen.
The celebration will also feature displays of traditional Japanese arts and crafts, a Koto – a 13-string Japanese harp, origami, books highlighting various Japanese traditions, Kimono shoes, and items used in a Japanese tea ceremony. “We are going to have many tables set up that the students will be able to view,” said Rasmussen. “I will be doing a traditional flower arrangement called Ikebana.” The Camrose Japan Friendship Society organizes a celebration of Japanese culture every five years to reaffirm the agreement signed by mayors Rudy Swanson and Yuichi Sako on Sept. 5, 1985, that twinned the City of Camrose with the Town of Kamifurano, Japan. “The relationship and communications between the City and Town have been very good,” said a report prepared by Rasmussen and Camrose Japan Friendship Society secretary Thomas Midbo. “There were several times the students from the Camrose Composite High School visited the Town of
Kamifurano, as well as from the Town of Kamifurano to Camrose. There have been numerous tours back and forth. The groups have been in the average size of about 30 students. There are mostly home stays occurring for the delegates as arranged by the Camrose Japan Friendship Society.” In September, 2000, the Camrose Japan Friendship Society organized a Twinning Municipalities Association Conference. The Town of Kamifurano sent over a delegation of 12 members to attend the conference and celebrate the 15th anniversary of the twinning with Camrose. Six of the delegation members were traditional Japanese instrumentalists named KOTO, who graced the conference with a performance. In May 2001, the Camrose Japan Friendship Society established Kamifurano Park on the north side of Mirror Lake at the gazebo. In 2003, the Society assisted with fundraising for a clock tower, which was placed in front of City Hall in hopes of fostering a deep-
er relationship and stronger communication between Camrose and Kamifurano. The clock tower has four faces which display the time in both communities, and plays music every half hour. “There was an unveiling ceremony,” said the report. “Present at the ceremony in front of City Hall were Kamifurano mayor Ogishi, a teacher delegation, home stay students from Kamifurano, Camrose mayor Norman Mayer and many citizens of Camrose. At the ceremony a memorial plaque was displayed under the clock tower along with a large cake to share for everyone present.” On Aug. 4, 2010, the Camrose Japan Friendship Society organized a celebration to mark the 25th anniversary of the twinning agreement and invited a delegation of 30 people from the Town of Kamifurano to participate. VIP guests at the ceremony included representatives from General Japanese Consulate and members of the Alberta Government’s Legislative Assembly.

Rotary Rib Tickler By Dan Jensen
Laughter and great food will be on the menu when the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak holds its third annual Rib Tickler at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino Thursday, June 12. The evening will get underway with cocktails at 6, followed by dinner and entertainment. Dinner will consist of three different types of mouthwatering ribs. “The people there put on an incredible feast,” said Don Forestier, chair of the Rotary Club of Camrose Rib Tickler committee. Entertainment will be provided by Vancouver-based ventriloquist Damian James. “He performed at the Canadian Congress a few years ago and was an unbelievable hit,” said Forestier. “I have seen his videos on the internet and he is quite the guy.” The Rotary Club of Camrose is hoping that holding the Rib Tickler on a Thursday evening will result in a good turnout. “More people can attend when you hold it on a Thursday as opposed to a weekend, when everybody is off doing different things,” said Forestier. All proceeds from the Rib Tickler will be used to support local organizations and projects such as the Camrose and District Music Festival, Reading University, and the continuing education programs. “We raised about $10,000 last year and sold all our tickets, so this year we have increased the number of tickets that are available,” said Forestier. “The Rib Tickler is a great way to get out and have a good laugh, something that we all need every once in a while.” Tickets may be purchased from Forestier at 780-6797232 or Dave Horner at 780-679-0559 for $50 apiece or $400 for a table of eight.

Harrison finishes one shot back of tour winner By Murray Green
Andrew Chelack, 17, of Calgary, fired rounds of 77 and 69 for a total of 146 to win the Maple Leaf Junior Tour Bow Valley Credit Union Classic by one shot over Andrew Harrison, 17, of Camrose. Harrison shot rounds of 76 and 71 for a total of 147 over two days on May 24 and 25. Michael Harrison, 19, came in fourth with scores of 79 and 72 in the junior boys’ division. Chelack is now shortlisted for MJT Team Canada to the Srixon International Junior Classic in New South Wales, Australia, this October. Not only were the young golfers excited about the spectacular scenery, but some of the 100 young golfers experienced the drama of a 30-minute delay during round one when a grizzly bear walked onto a fairway after a group of girls had teed off. The next Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in Alberta is the Mountain View Classic at the Olds Central Highlands on June 21 and 22. The band Hotel California performed some of the best Eagles songs in a tribute at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino on May 16. The concert was well received by patrons as they recalled the hit songs.
Over the past couple of years the City of Camrose, with the help from Dillon Consulting Ltd., has been developing a Green Space Master Plan (GSMP) to guide the development and growth of Camrose’s Green Space System (including parks and trails) over the next 15 years. The first round of public engagement was held in November, 2011, and included a number of classroom
sessions, focus groups and a public information session. Since then, the master plan has been drafted, circulated within the city and to council, and has just been posted to the City website for public review. Now, we would like to present the draft master plan to all interested residents and stakeholders at the Stoney Creek Centre, 5320-39 Avenue, from 7 to 9 p.m. June 5. The presentation will run from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
Drop in for five or 50 minutes to learn about the planning process and tell us your thoughts on Camrose’s green spaces and the draft master plan. Refreshments will be available. The draft master plan is available on the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca. A GSMP questionnaire will be available at the session, and also electronically on the City website for those who are unable to attend.

Johnson to be inducted to Hall of Fame By Dan Jensen
LeRoy Johnson will be inducted to the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in the builders category at a Hockey Alberta gala at the Westin Hotel in Edmonton June 6. “I am honoured that others would think that I deserve this type of honour and recognition,” said Johnson. “I didn’t even know I was being considered.” Johnson was given the challenge of reviving the Camrose Lutheran College hockey program shortly after he was hired as principal of CLC’s high school in 1967. In 1967-68 the Vikings com-
peted in the Central Alberta Junior Hockey League against juvenile teams from Bentley, Lacombe and Ponoka. The following year the team switched to a more local league featuring midget and juvenile teams from Camrose and Wetaskiwin where it found its first major success, capturing a championship and winning a major Camrose hockey tournament. The next stop was the Central Alberta Jr. B. Hockey League, which the team joined in 1969. In 1972-73, with Johnson as general manager and Len Frankson (who was
Johnson had a major impact on the game By Dan Jensen and Murray Green
Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA and Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson doesn’t know of anyone more deserving of induction to the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame than LeRoy Johnson. “He has been a tremendous builder of hockey in the province,” said Olson, who put Johnson’s name forward for consideration. “I have always thought of him as a visionary because of the work he did with the Viking Cup tournament. He is a big idea guy and one of the people you need to stimulate creativity in a community. I think that is something he has done very well.” Olson said even though the Viking Cup hockey tournament is no longer operating, it is still fondly remembered by many hockey fans. “When I mention to people that I am from Camrose there is still a real high recognition of the Viking Cup.” Former Camrose Lutheran College Vikings coach Mike Johnston, who is now the coach and general manager of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League, agrees that Johnson has done a lot for hockey. “When I came to Camrose he had the Viking Cup going,” said Johnston. “He started it a couple of seasons before I arrived and it was one of the first international hockey tournaments around. Players from the Czech Republic and Russia were billeted in homes and it became a cultural exchange. We also had the opportunity to go to Europe and experience different cultures.” Johnston said Johnson has always had a knack for organizing big events and recruiting volunteers. “The Viking Cup became one of the biggest tournaments around. I give him a lot of credit for what he did for college and international hockey. He developed a hockey culture at the college-university.”

succeeded the next year by Joe Voytechek) as coach, the Vikings plunged into the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, playing against teams from SAIT, NAIT, Mount Royal College and Red Deer. The Vikings celebrated a national college championship in the spring of 1975 a short few months after returning from a 12-game exhibition swing through Sweden, Denmark and Norway over the Christmas break. According to Tom Gould, who was a member of the team, the Vikings proved to be remarkable ambassadors for Canadian hockey at a time when the Philadelphia Flyers, then named the Broad Street Bullies, had chartered a decidedly different reputation for the sport at the professional level. The Vikings were well received for their disciplined, but persistent style, and Johnson’s standing in international hockey circles was indelibly established. The idea of CLC and Camrose hosting an international tournament was raised a few years later during another Christmas tour when the team was on a train from Leningrad to Helsinki. “I suggested to someone that we should invite some of the teams we were playing against to come back to Canada for a tournament,” said Johnson. “We were one of a very few teams that was going to Europe to play hockey at the time and there weren’t many teams from Europe who were coming this way either. In many respects, the Vikings led the way in terms of Alberta’s involvement in international hockey.” In 1980, Johnson coordinated and founded the Viking Cup, a biennial international hockey tournament that ran

for 24 years as part of an ongoing exchange with European Ice Hockey Federations. “The first year was a huge success,” said Johnson of the Christmas/New Year’s event that featured teams from Finland and Sweden, as well as Red Deer College, Centennial College from Scarborough, Ontario, and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and Canadian Tier 2 champion Prince Albert Raiders. “We packed the Max McLean Arena.” The second tournament featured the national under 18 team from Czechoslovakia. “It was interesting negotiating with the Czech national team because the iron curtain was still there,” said Johnson. “I still remember trying to convince the communist officials to let the players be billeted in the homes of our Canadian host families.” The negotiations were repeated a few years later with the vice president of the Russian Ice Hockey Fed-
eration at the 1988 Canada Cup. “He was interested in sending a team to Camrose but balked at the idea when he was informed the Russian players would have to be billeted,” said Johnson. “I didn’t know what I was going to do so I turned to the fellow’s interpreter and said that the Czech team felt the same way the first time they came but now they wouldn’t have it any other way.” The reply he received was that if the Czechs can do it the Russians could as well. After confirming the Russian team, Johnson had to scramble to find another Canadian squad so the tournament could have two equal divisions of four. The solution came when he placed a call to Clare Drake, then coach of the University of Alberta Golden Bears. “It was late notice since the tournament was only a few months away but he (Drake) said yes,” said Johnson. Johnson induction to Hall of Fame Continued from page 18
With the Russians and the Czechs joining teams from the United States and Canada the Viking Cup became a true international tournament. “Confirming the Russians was a huge breakthrough for us, said Johnson. “It meant we had the top players in the world at that age level. Johnson continued as Viking Cup coordinator until 1998, when his son, Jeff, who is now minister of education for the Province of Alberta, assumed leadership. Along with his involvement in college and international hockey, Johnson was a founding member of the Camrose Sport Development Society, which established the Camrose Kodiaks. He was also an instrumental force in the realization of the Camrose Recreation Centre, which, in the short time it has been open, has hosted major hockey and curling events, including the Royal Bank Cup. “The initial idea was to just build on to the Max McLean Arena, said Johnson. “It was my view that we could do something bigger. As MLA for the constituency of Wetaskiwin-Camrose, Johnson brought the need for provincial assistance for the proposed facility to several cabinet ministers. He explained a new arena complex would not only serve the needs of the community but the needs of Augustana and the University of Alberta, which merged in 2004. “It became a true partnership when we received a $2.5 million grant from the University through the government, said Johnson. “Then we had the City, County, University and government all coming together. I think everyone in the community is pretty proud of what we have. Johnson is convinced the money from the provincial government would never have come if it wasn’t for Camrose and Augustana hosting the Viking Cup. “We needed a good facility here, not just for the Viking Cup but other things as well, he said. “I always felt that with the Viking Cup, the Vikings, the Camrose Kodiaks and other teams we were very unique. I don’t know what other centres there are that have what we do. Continued on page 26

2014 Ford Fiesta
Redefining the small car market
Jan Nowakowski By Dan Jensen
The 2014 Fiesta at Lamb Ford Sales Camrose is redefining the small car market. “Our customers want cars that are expressive and fun while offering classleading fuel economy and the Fieista delivers,” said Lamb Ford sales manager Brett Read. “It delivers all the excitement drivers are looking for in a small car.” EcoBoost The new 1.0 litre Eco Boost engine achieves 7.35 litres per 100 km in the city and 6.36 litres per 100 km on the highway, better than any of its rivals, making it the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid sub compact in North America. While the diminutive size of the 1.0 litre EcoBoost saves cash at the pumps, it doesn’t hold anything back on the road. At 123 horsepower for each litre of engine displacement, it delivers more power for its size than a Lamborghini Aventador (at 108 horsepower per litre). Fiesta’s 1.6 litre EcoBoost delivers a classleading 197 horsepower for potent acceleration and 202 lb.-ft. of torque available throughout the rpm range. An overboost feature can extend peak torque for up to 17 seconds at a time, and
a six-speed manual transmission lets you stick every shift. EcoBoost is fundamental to Ford’s strategy to provide technologically advanced, high output, sma l ler - d isplac ement powertrains that deliver uncompromised performance and fuel economy. EcoBoost engines deliver fuel economy gains of up to 20 per cent and reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 15 per cent, compared with larger, less-efficient engines. Ford’s leadership with EcoBoost has resulted in more than 125 patents on the technology. Cur-
rently, more than 500,000 vehicles have this engine and by 2013 more than 1.3 million will have EcoBoost. Attract more followers Drive by in a 2014 Fiesta and people will notice, thanks to the chromeaccented grille, sleekly tailored headlamps, a chiselled hood, a new spoiler on the rear hatch and sculpted tail lamps. Inside, new sport-bolstered front seats can be fitted with cloth or leather trim. Keep your smartphone close (and charging) in the full centre console with padded armrest. On Fiesta Titanium and ST, an
eight-speaker audio system from Sony rocks the house. In the back, a 60/40 split rear seat folds down, opening up additional room for gear. Pass-through access from the trunk increases versatility in sedan models. A new Sync with MyFord Touch system with 6.5-inch touch screen featuring enhanced voice control provides drivers more options than ever for directions, communication and entertainment functions. SYNC AppLink capabilities pioneered on the first Fiesta continue to allow access and control of Fordapproved smartphone apps through voice commands and other functions for drivers on the go, helping them keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Turn by turn directions remain part of the SYNC services. “This car was built for the digital generation,” said John Schneider, Ford chief engineer, Upperbody Electronics. “With Bluetooth connectivity and MP3 capabilities, tech-savvy people who use social media to be constantly connected with the world around them won’t be slowed down in this car.” Ford MyKey is a new feature for Fiesta. MyKey enables parents in particu-
lar to encourage safer driving and limit their teenagers’ exposure to risk at the wheel. The system allows owners to configure maximum speed and audio volume limits. It mutes audio until safety belts are fastened and ensures driver aids, safety systems and more vigorous alerts cannot be deactivated when used. Layer for protection Underneath the aerodynamic shape of Fiesta is a rigid safety cage. Highstrength and ultra-highstrength boron steel work with SPACE (Side Protection and Cabin Enhancement) architecture to help divert crash forces away from occupants. Next, seven standard airbags include front-seat side airbags and side curtains. Beyond that, Ford SYNC with 911 assist uses your phone to call 911 in the event of an airbag deployment or fuel pump shutoff, and can even give the operator an urgent message for you. Underpinning it all, AdvanceTrac ESC (electronic stability control) helps keep all four wheels firmly planted. You can see the 2014 Ford Fiesta at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Beaver Country Fire and Flagstaff Country EMS attended the scene. The 37-year-old male driver of the west-bound car and the 10-month-old male passenger, both from Wetaskiwin, were declared deceased at the scene. Brandon Liang from CCHS claims Skills Alberta gold medal in mechanics By Murray Green Camrose Composite High School Grade 12 student Brandon Liang earned the top spot in the auto mechanics field in the Skills Alberta competition at the Expo Centre in Edmonton May 14 and 15. Brandon will now represent Team Alberta at the Skills Canada national competition to be held in Toronto on June 5 and 6. “This is the Olympics for trades. First you go to a regional competition, then provincials and then nationals,” Brandon explained. “This was my second year at regionals at Lakeland College and I received a gold medal two years in a row. The judges scored you on every move you made. There were between 12 and 15 of us in automotive. Last year, it was like ‘how did I get first?’ This year, I knew what to expect. It wasn’t easier, but my nerves were a little calmer. It shows off my school and that it can teach me things I need to know. Teacher Kevin Nagy had taught me from Grade 10 on and got me on the path to becoming an auto technician. I really can’t put it into words how much he has done for me.” Brandon moved on to the provincials where the competition was even tougher. “Last year, I placed fifth and this year first. I tried my best last year and did okay. Over the last year my knowledge has increased because I was working in a
shop and received training both in school and at work,” shared Brandon. “You also start to relax with the judges scoring you.” The provincials were nine hours of competition, while the nationals will be 12 hours over two days. “We had to take apart the engine, measure pistons and put it back together. We also worked on brakes. I like to work on engines and brakes.” First and second place at provincials were very close in points. “Brandon is a great addition to Lamb Ford and he is a top quality person and worker. We also have to give credit to the Camrose Composite High School and the automotive program led by Mr. Kevin Nagy, as well as our Quick Lane lube department with Glenn Lyseng and his crew,” said Lamb Ford general manager Pat Quinlan, who visited the school to recruit a work experience student. “CCHS provides a good training environment to prepare students for the workplace.” Quick Lane manager Glenn Lyseng appreciates the effort Brandon brings to his department. “Right from the first day he walked in the door his attitude and the way he carries himself was good. He always finds something that needs to be done and I’ve never seen him sitting around doing nothing. He just does it and he gets it (work ethics) and he has been brought up right. I’m
really impressed with him and I’m looking forward to having him work full time,” said Glenn. “We are really happy with him joining our staff.” When Brandon is finished with his work experience program hours at the end of June he will then work full time at the car dealership to realize his dream. “I want to be an automotive service technician (mechanic) and apprentice through Lamb Ford and SAIT. I’ve always liked cars and trucks, so it is a good career choice for me,” said Brandon. “It is a good jump start for my career. It gives me more experience and hours by being involved in work experience before I move into full time.” Mechanics is a constant learning experience and Brandon enjoys that. “There is always something different to deal with every day. Since last June, every single day has been different,” explained Brandon. He has been working on oil changes, tires and brakes, but looks forward to when he can tackle engines and other tasks. “Sometimes I help out the journeymen when they need an extra hand. It is a good way to learn, by watching them and helping,” he said. Brandon will be in Toronto from June 3 to 7 and plans on attending a Toronto Blue Jays game, as well as some other sites.

Theodore Douglas Lavoie Ted was born October 28, 1956 in Camrose, AB to parents Douglas and Doris Lavoie. He passed away suddenly on Friday, May 23, 2014. He grew up in Camrose and remained there his entire life. Ted married Sandy Balcom on May 18, 1991. To this union were born two children, Matthew Peter James and Melissa Lee Lavoie. Ted was a man of many talents – as a young boy he played guitar, showcasing his talents in the family Christmas skits and, according to him, his “Awesome Band”. He also worked as a welder for Lanuk’s Welding, then worked at Stelco. Following his dad’s and Uncle Tubby’s footsteps, Ted’s passion was always truck driving; he hauled fuel for Esso for many years, then drove for Hi-Way 13 Transport. Ted loved anything automotive. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and his dogs. Ted also loved people. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, but was always late … Ted ran on “Ted Time”. He was a good cook, altering dishes to satisfy everyone’s taste buds (especially his daughter’s) and he made sure nobody ever left hungry. Ted had many friends, far and wide. No matter where he was, everybody knew him. He accepted people for who they were and was not judgmental. Ted always had time to stop and talk. People referred to him as “Teddy Bear”. For being a big man, he was very approachable and not intimidating. Some people said he would have made a great Santa. Ted always gave his kids what they wanted, but not always their version! He was a very kind and loving dad. In 2008, Ted became a grandfather for the first time when Rylee Jean was born. Like every other grandfather, he was over the moon. He always had nicknames for the kids (Buck, Princess, Peanut). Ted leaves to mourn his son Matthew (Brandi); his daughter Melissa (Nick); the love of his life Hunny (his dog); his grandchildren Rylee Jean, Wyatt Theodore and Kinslee Sheila; the mother of his children Sandy Balcom; his sister Terry Taylor; nieces Debbie and Darlene and nephew Wayne and their families; sister Trudy Metcalfe; nieces Tracy and Michelle and their families; and many other family and friends. Ted was predeceased by his parents Doug and Doris Lavoie; his adopted brother Terry Movold; Uncle Tubby (Doyle) Odegard; and brother-in-law Bev Taylor. “He will be truly missed and may he rest in peace.” A funeral service was held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Doug Dodds officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Lung Association. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Blaque back at Bailey By Lea Polny On June 14 the lights will be on and the crowd will be tearing up the dance floor to old favourites from the 60s and 70s. It’s the Godfrey Blaque
and White Dance Party, a Bailey Theatre fundraiser. “This is the start of our fundraising plans for 2014”, says Kimberly Hann, fundraising chair and vice-pres-

walkers’ Jamboree, Big Valley Jamboree and our second annual Harvest Fundraising Festival.” Back in 1968, any Camrose entertainment news would have included the name Godfrey Blaque, the
name chosen by a group of local musicians when they formed the band. They toured Alberta with a mix of rock, blues and country music, playing to an evergrowing group of fans. Continued on page 31
