Thursday’s parade will have lot of variety

You won’t want to miss a minute of this Thursday morning’s Camrose Chamber of Commerce BVJ Kick’n Country Parade.

“It’s going to have a lot of variety,” said Camrose Chamber of Commerce parade committee chair Greg Sharp.

“We have just over 80 entries now and more are coming in every day.”

The Camrose parade had 98 entries last year, including 16 mascots.

“It would be nice if we could get to that number again,” said Chamber executive director Sharon Anderson.

Pre-parade entertainment will be provided by the Camrose Spirals starting at 10 a.m.

The official parade marshals will be the Camrose Special Olympics athletes, who will be riding the Mirror Lake Express train.

Special parade dignitar-

ies will include Jim Prentice, a former Conservative MP who is now taking on Ric McIver and Thomas Lukaszuk for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson, Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith and Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer.

Musical entries will include the National Army Cadet Pipes and Drums from the Rocky Mountain National Army Cadet Summer Training Centre, the Clan McNaughton Pipe Band from Edmonton, and a Mas (short for masquerade) group from Cariwest, a lively three-day Caribbean Arts Festival that takes place annually in the heart of downtown Edmonton.

“We have a hard time attracting a lot of bands because our parade is so late in the summer,” said Anderson.

Other entries will

include the Wild West Willy, a 3,000 pound Brahma bull that will be ridden by the winner of this year’s Take No Bull contest put on by the Family Violence Action Society, entertainers from AboutTime Productions, the Hay Lakes Riders, Central Alberta Derby Association, Muskwachees Cadets, Edmonton Indy Raceway and the Battle River Shriners.

“It just wouldn’t be a parade without the Shriners and their miniature vehicles,” said Sharp.

The Camrose Chamber of Commerce will be awarding plaques for the best entries in the commercial, non commercial, decorated, visiting/community, antique and novelty categories.

“The judging will be done by members of the Rotary Club starting at 8:30 a.m.,” said Anderson.

The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. from the north end of Main Street and travel south until it reaches the

United Church, where it will take a left hand turn. It will then proceed north again on 48 Street, eventually ending at 51 Avenue.

A special viewing area will be set up at the United Church for seniors. Shut-ins and lodge residents will be able to watch the proceedings live by tuning into Channel 10.

Jackie Greening, manager of Edmonton operations for Newcap Radio and program director for CFCW, and CFCW broadcaster Pete Hicks will be providing parade commentary.

Information about submitting late parade entries may be obtained by contacting the Camrose Chamber of Commerce office at 780672-4217.

All entries, including the towing vehicle, must be decorated.

Successful summer The Mirror Lake Express train has had a successful

summer, winning first place at the Red Deer parade for civic entry, and second place in the Ponoka Stampede in the towns/cities/villages category.

It also received a special award at the Calgary Stampede parade for quality of build.

“It didn’t win anything at the K-Days Parade in Edmonton, but the people who were with it had a lot of fun,” said Anderson.

The train will be making an appearance at Dahlia’s 100th anniversary celebration on the August long weekend, after which it will head to Bruderheim for that community’s Ag Days, and to Stettler during the last weekend in August.

The final appearance of the year will be at the Camrose Kodiaks’ home openers in September.

The Mirror Lake Express will be providing rides at Mirror Lake Park from 1 to 8 p.m. on parade day.

Champions named in ‘Take No Bull’ campaign Children exposed to family violence and abuse will continue to have access to local counselling services due to fundraising efforts of several community members.

The second annual “Take No Bull” campaign run by Family Violence Action Society (FVAS) saw ten competitors raising pledge funds and vying for the honor of riding Braham-cross steer, Wild West Willie in the 2014 Camrose Chamber of Commerce Big Valley Jamboree Kick’n Country Parade. The campaign raised in excess of $7,200, somewhat short of a $10,000 goal, but up from $5,500 in 2013. Second time competitor and treasurer of FVAS, Lynne Kennedy, won top honors and the privilege of riding Wild West Willie by raising over $2,100. Kennedy also received a custom trophy buckle, sponsored in part by Lammles’ Western Wear and Tack to commemorate her win. In second place, Corry Peake, manager of Scotia Bank Camrose, raised $1,600 and earned the option of promoting Scotia Bank on Willie. Honorable mention goes to Jennifer Routhier, coowner of Stockmen’s Chophouse, for raising $839 for the cause.

In addition to the title of champion, competitors were eligible for a variety of other prizes. Sets of two tickets to Big Valley Jamboree, donated by Panhandle Productions, were awarded to fundraisers P.J. Stasko and Signi Bruner. Spring Classic 2015 Rodeo tickets, donated

by Camrose Regional Exhibition, were awarded to Corry Peake, Jennifer Routhier and Jan Stepan. Contestants raising a minimum of $250 are also eligible for group or individual photos with Wild

County Reeve Don Gregorwich rode Wild West Willie in the Camrose parade in 2013. Leading the way was Family Violence Action Society’s Sheralyn Dobos.

With a few donations still to come in, net proceeds from the event are expected to be about $6,800, which will provide approximately 15 children with counselling support. Children receiving services of FVAS most often have no other options to access this type of counselling, due to financial and other barriers.

“This community support is essential in maintaining the children’s counselling service,” notes Sheralyn Dobos, program director of FVAS. “Our grant funding doesn’t cover these services, so without the local community supporting us in this way, this free service

would not be available. We will continue to look for ways to make up the shortfall of $2,800 on this fundraiser, but as a last resort we may have to reduce service to children,” adds Dobos.

Children exposed to family violence can be traumatized in many ways, even though the abusive behaviour may not be directed toward them. Children need not even be in the same room with parents or adults during an abusive incident to be negatively affected.

They may become fearful and anxious, believing that the world is a dangerous place. A child may become aggressive, lashing out and bullying others, or instead become passive and withdrawn, believing that they

cannot change any part of their lives. Trouble learning is common for such children, because so much of their brain is busy dealing with stress of living in their abusive environment.

Exposure to family violence affects the development of children’s brains, which in turn affects physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development. Their ability to connect with other people and make friends is also affected, which has longterm implications for relationships they enter when they become adults. Children who continue to be exposed to family violence and abuse continue to be negatively affected in their development.

Last year, 27 children

who were exposed to family violence were supported in gaining confidence to express their feelings, deal with stress and manage their own anger and conflict with others in healthier ways. When children receive counselling at FVAS, parents are strongly encouraged to undertake their own learning and growing process to begin to address the root of the issue. Choices, a group for women impacted by family violence or abuse, and Changing Ways, a group for men are each 14-week programs that help adults begin to understand the dynamics of family violence.

Participants learn and practice valuable skills including understanding and coping with emotions and stress, taking responsibility for their own actions and communicating assertively, to name a few. An eight-week Anger Management class is also provided for adults with more generalized anger issues not related to domestic relationships, but that might affect them in work or social settings. All groups are provided without registration fees, and counselling is provided free of charge, though donations are welcomed.

Family Violence Action Society is a registered charity providing services to Camrose and area since 1996. It seeks to work in collaboration and partnership with others to reduce the occurrence and impact of violence in our community.

Railway Station honouring women who contributed to war effort

The Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will be recognizing the contributions made by prairie women to the First and Second World War efforts during a special event this Saturday.

“We thought it would be appropriate to focus this year and next on the on the women who played an important role in those conflicts,” said Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park director Glenys Smith. “This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and 2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the start of the Second World War.” The tribute event will include presentations by three speakers starting at 2 p.m.

Denise Dufresne and Rita Nyback will be recalling memories of their family’s involvement in the war.

“Rita’s father was killed in the Second World War when she was just a child,” said Smith. “She tells her experience of losing her father due to the war.”

Helen L. Fowlds Smith will be doing a first person monologue on the life of Helen L. Fowlds, who graduated as a nurse from Grace Hospital, Toronto just before the outbreak of the First World War and served in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force as part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps.

“As a registered nurse myself, I wanted to focus on the contributions made during the war by female medical personnel,” said Smith. “There isn’t a lot of information on that.”

Fowlds began her active service on wMarch 18, 1915 at Le Tréport and then was posted at Wimereux, near Boulogne-sur Mer, as a member of the No. 1 Canadian Stationary Hospital. From midAugust 1915 until late 1916 she was stationed on the island of Lemnos, Greece, during which time she kept an autograph book with notes from her friends.

Fowlds sailed from Lemnos on Jan. 31, 1916 and, after almost a month in Cairo, arrived in Salonica, Greece on March 3, 1916. In late September 1916, she asked for a transfer and was able to leave the camp at Salonica on Sept. 25, 1916. She spent some time in Malta before arriving in England on Oct. 20, 1916.

On Nov. 28, 1916, Fowlds was posted to a Canadian Red Cross Hospital at Bushey Park where she received notice in February, 1917 that she was to be awarded the Royal Red Cross (2nd class) in recognition of her valuable service in connection with the war.

On June 1, 1917 she reported for duty at the Canadian Convalescent Hospital at Clarence House where she stayed most of the summer.

Contingency enough to complete City Hall

Camrose City council is breathing a bit easier with the City Hall project.

City manager Damian Herle and city senior project manager, construction, Jocelyn Kew gave a report to city council July 21 showing that the approximately $200,000 ($228,258.47 as of June 16) still remaining in the City Hall contingency fund is more than enough to take the project to final completion in the early part of 2015.

Furniture An expense that will still have to be covered by the contingency is building furnishings, which Herle estimates will total around $100,000.

That’s substantially less than the $200,000 that the architect suggested, based on $500 for every employee.

“We believe we are in the ballpark with that ($100,000) number,” said Herle, adding that the City will be trying to bring over as much of the existing furniture as it can.

“As long as it looks good we will use it.” $1.3 million contingency The city began the City Hall project with a contingency of 10 per cent of the Bird management original contract of $13,447,740, or $1.3 million.

“We have issued 41 change orders to date at an additional cost of $444,869.12,” said Kew. “Approximately 33 per cent of the construction contingency has been used on the construction only change orders.”

Council was informed that while there were changes to City Hall that were not specifically approved by council, the same can be said

of other City construction projects.

“It is the norm that design changes need to be made on capital projects and these are part and parcel of construction management,” said Herle. On building (only) capital projects there have been numerous changes made to CPAC, the recreation centre, the fire hall, etc., that would fit into the same framework. The same comment applies to other capital projects other than facilities.”

Wellness room Herle addressed concerns of council about the wellness room for City staff in the northeast corner of the fourth floor, noting that it was always in the plans, along with the mechanical room, records storage areas, two washrooms, two showers, a janitor’s room and a large unfinished portion for future expansion.

“The wellness room will be completely empty,” said Herle. “If the City staff want to purchase equipment that will be their own initiative. It will not be furnished.”

Construction materials Kew diminished suggestions and rumours that the concrete in the new City Hall is of lower quality and that the City can expect problems with it in the future.

“We hit maximum strength with the concrete and it is very good,” she said, adding that the concrete tests have been documented and are available for public viewing.

“We are not seeing any early cracks.”

Cost savings Herle commended Kew for working to achieve cost savings on the new City Hall by removing the elevator ($36,000), doing away with the audio visual tender

($32,000), and negotiating lower architectural fees.

“Project management is important and everything is scrutinized,” said Herle.

Kew noted in her July 4 City Hall project status report that the overall project expenditures need to be monitored to ensure there are not project overruns.

“Additional project funds are not available for items not identified in the original budget and project costs,” she said. “Change orders are being reviewed in depth to ensure no new scope items

are being added. This is being reviewed each month with the City of Camrose finance department and the city manager.”

Mirror Lake Centre Councillor Max Lindstrand said the City needs to start talking about what it plans to do with the existing City Hall in the Mirror Lake Centre once it is no longer being used as a City Hall.

“I am reluctant to sink money into decommissioning it without knowing what we are going to do with it.”

The Camrose Axemen have emerged as one of the best teams in the North Central Alberta Baseball League (NCABL) over the last three years.

Camrose won the pennant during the regular season in 2012 and backed that up with a repeat in 2013.

Currently, the Axemen are in second place and are still in the hunt for the top spot. They would like nothing better then to have three straight regular season titles.

The success on the field brought the all-star game to Harry Andreassen Field in Kin Park on July 22.

“The North Central Alberta Baseball League has been going in team numbers.

We are 11 franchises and looking very strong in that regard. What is evident to me is that it is growing in quality, as many people are witnessing here. We are of a high quality of baseball that we feel the top half can compete with senior tripleA baseball in this country,” said Paul Riopel, commissioner of the league. “We

are launching, next year, a touring team that will play in several tournaments on weekends when the NCABL is open. We will pre-pick our tournaments. That would be not only in Alberta, but major centres in B.C.” The touring team will be showcasing the talent in the league to even attract top notch young players in the future.

“This allows players to expand beyond the NCABL, but still be a part of it,” explained Riopel.

The all-star game is for recognition of individuals who have demonstrated superior performance on the field this year.

“It is a way of showcasing the talent in our league and encouraging people to come out to discover what good baseball we have to watch locally. That is what we are hoping to achieve,” added Riopel.

“Camrose is fertile ground for sports. They have the Kodiaks and Vikings, and historically they had one of the best baseball teams in Alberta. We are hopeful to re-introduce baseball into

Dynamic duo offers super service

There have been plenty of famous duos over the years: Batman and Robin, Abbott and Costello, Chris and Geri, Sonny and Cher; really, too many to list here. What’s that you say? Who’s Chris and Geri?

Well, okay, so maybe they’re not famous around the world, but when it comes to providing excellent customer service at the Norsemen Inn, they’ve gained an outstanding reputation throughout central Alberta. They’re well known for being the go-to people if you’re planning a banquet, a social function, a business meeting or an informal come-and-go.

Thirteen years ago they began working together, managing the operations of Camrose’s original full-service hotel. But they didn’t start out in management roles; they earned them, working their separate ways up through the ranks. They’ve washed dishes, served in the restaurant, dining room, lounge and nightclub; they worked as night managers, each of them learning the skills to become managers.

Now, as they talk about their roles at the hotel, there’s a natural, easy friendliness between them gained over the years, over the hundreds of banquets they’ve coordinated, the staffing schedules, the training, the supervising,

and, of course, the thousands of conversations they’ve had with customers, some of whom come into the hotel three times a day.

Chris followed a similar path. She began working part-time in the nightclub while attending Augustana and liked the work so much, she decided she had found a career in hospitality.

Now they work in the same office at desks that face each other.

Sometimes they finish each other’s sentences.

Parliamentary Report Kevin Sorenson, MP, Crowfoot Standing Up for Israel Canada has always stood up for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Canada is always interested in doing what is right and just, regardless of whether it is popular, convenient or expedient.

Our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has been very clear when it comes to the current situation in Israel.

“The indiscriminate rocket attacks from Gaza on Israel are terrorist acts, for which there is no justification. Canada is unequivocally behind Israel. We support its right to defend itself, by itself, against these terror attacks, and urge Hamas to immediately cease their indiscriminate attacks on innocent Israeli civilians,” he says.

I’m saddened to think that human beings are being deliberately used as shields to further the work of terrorists in the region.

As your Member of Parliament, I believe that our Prime Minister has taken a principled position and is standing up for those suffering from aggression. Many of our local military veterans can share with you their personal experiences in this regard in places far away from our riding and our nation such as Korea, Cyprus, Bosnia, Kosovo, Croatia, Somalia, and Afghanistan, among others.

Prime Minister Harper is calling on other nations to do the right thing by standing with Israel in its time of need. He reminds us that the “failure by the international community to condemn these reprehensible actions would encourage these terrorists to continue their appalling actions. Canada calls on its allies and partners to recognize that these terrorist acts are unacceptable and that solidarity with Israel is the best way of stopping the conflict.

Canada reiterates its call for the Palestinian government to disarm Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups operating in Gaza, including the Iranian proxy, Palestinian Islamic Jihad.”

When there is a battle between democracy and terrorism, where innocent lives are at stake, we should be proud Canada is not afraid to take the principled moral high ground and stand up for what is right. We will continue to stand up for human rights and promote international security by standing with Israel. We will continue to ensure that freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law that define this country, are enjoyed in Israel and around the world.

Please remove the barricades We are retired and moved to Camrose four years ago and purchased a home in the West Grandview area. One of the main reasons that we chose this location was for the safe and convenient way to downtown Camrose on 50 Avenue and Grand Drive.

In April we received a letter from the City stating that 49 and 50 Avenues would be temporarily closed and later barricades were put up. Now we have to drive west and south and then east and north to go downtown, which doesn’t make much sense.

It was reported in a letter that over 1,800 vehicles a day used the old route to go to downtown Camrose. If this is true, then why should the business people in old Camrose, plus that many motorists suffer just to please a few residents? The figures just don’t add up, and to the city councillors of Camrose, please remove the barricades.

Vic and Madeline Luckwell, Camrose Helpful resources We are so blessed to have such an amazing library and staff as we do here in Camrose. As a mother of three young children, I am so thankful for all of the amazing resources and programs that the Camrose Public Library offers. My kids love our visits there, and it’s so much fun to peruse the shelves looking for materials that fit right into whatever topic is hot in their lives at the moment whether it be motorbikes, knights, or Where’s Waldo.

Over the last little while, though, I have been really disappointed to see the addition of multiple iPads in the Children and Youth area. Even before the addition of the iPads, I often noticed many young people spending their library visit playing online games, and not touching one book. Earlier today while visiting the library, of the seven or eight pre-teens there, every one of them was engrossed in some

type of video game, either on the library computers or one of the provided iPads.

According to Stats Canada, Canadian youth are spending an average of six hours in front of the screen every single day. I’m disappointed to see that our local library is a place where they can log even more screen time.

I think it’s wonderful that young people are coming to the library at all, but I would love to see a passion for books as the reason they are there.

I believe that technology is a vital part of the workings of a library and of accessing information and knowledge, and having computers for academic purposes is absolutely necessary. But to have the library technology be used by our youth to add to their screen time by playing car chases and online card games? I would like to see our youth taking in books about cars, play actual card games with friends, and use that technology to feed their minds in a productive way.

Should the library technology be available for games?

I, for one, would like to see it used as a tool for teaching and learning only.

Sarah Chetney, Camrose Roads for vehicles We live on 54 Ave. A very busy street. We do not complain because we know what roads are for. To drive vehicles on. We live in the back as the front deck is too noisy. That’s our problem.

We have solved it. Please reconsider the actions that have been taken in barricading these streets. I’m sure there are many people who take this route because it is a lot less stressful. I feel badly for the people who live in the next block who cannot access downtown without going up to 48 Ave or the longer route around by 54 Ave. Could that be the reason why we have experienced more traffic on 54 Ave.? Please put our request on record.

Neil Cunningham Keitha Cunningham, Camrose Plan for the future As a lifelong Camrose resident I read the Booster, and especially the Letters to the Editor, with great enthusiasm last night. Too often we are not interested in political issues and we end up with the government we deserve.

The road closure issue obviously has people talking. I agree that if we all pay taxes, we all deserve access to all the roads in town but there are a couple issues needing to be discussed here.

First off, closing off roads that have become

too busy for the residents of the area does not fix the problem, there is still the same amount of traffic on the roads, they just take other routes, maybe through someone else’s neighbourhood. Also, if Camrose had another option (a north ring road or a double lane south ring road) then maybe some traffic would be more efficiently diverted around the city. After the spending on such a swanky city hall, I doubt either of those ideas will see the light of day in the near future.

Another issue is that Camrose needs to start planning for future growth.

This city is no longer navigable in five minutes and we need to start looking at longer term solutions for traffic.

On the bright side, the articles about our enviable park system were bang on.

We are lucky to live with such a remarkable park system in our backyard!

It’s nice to see citizens voicing their concerns and hopefully the city is listening.

Bob Jonson, Camrose Costly message I was born and raised in the city of Camrose (the Rose City). I see that someone, or a group of people, on the public payroll at city hall had made the decision to change our city logo and slogan (the stage is set)).

After so many decades of promoting our city across the province and beyond as the Rose City, I question the logic of suddenly portraying our community so definitively in the direction of arts.

Additionally, I an deeply concerned at the cost of this initiative. Though I cannot seem to get an exact answer as to the total cost involved, when I start thinking of the ramifications of changing everything from expensive community signage, including our east and west end entrance signs to the city, vehicle decaling, letterheads, thousands of public figure business cards, to flashy tourism materials, or the staggering cost of the actual process itself, I quickly exceed a six-figure number.

And, that’s without knowing specifically how much we taxpayers may have paid for the consultants, artists and city manpower time involved in the process. Did the citizens get enough say in this decision? I think not. Was there a better way to spend a fair bit of taxpayer money? I think so. What a shame.

How far in advance should we book our school-break vacation?

A:

There is no concrete answer to this t question. On certain occasions we w have been asked to book one day or o one week before a school break and lucked out finding both suitable airfares l and accommodations at a destination of choice.

However, generally speaking this is the exception and you risk disappointment by leaving travel plans to the proverbial one-yard line. Travel demand is exceptionally high now and prudent travellers are snapping up choice hotels and flights to destinations that are typical favourites of school aged kids.

Even the Easter break period is filling fast to destinations like the Caribbean, Jamaica, Disney properties, Hawaii, etc.

Man charged with Possession A 31-year-old Camrose man was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance July 22 after police conducted a traffic stop early Tuesday morning. A subsequent investigation revealed that the male was in possession of quantities of crystal methamphetamine and cocaine.

A court date has been set for the male.

Police received a complaint from a homeowner in the area of 46 Avenue and 56 Street that sometime overnight his 1997 green Chevrolet Cavalier was stolen.

A complaint was received from a business owner in the east end that sometime overnight his fence compound was entered and several items were stolen.

A woman called police advising that her boyfriend was causing problems inside of the residence. Police attended and spoke with the 24-year-old man. The man was uncooperative and under the influence of alcohol. The man was arrested for Prevention of Breach of Peace.

Healthy, supportive relationships are a huge influence in assisting older adults to maintain their independence. To the extent a senior is able, having responsibility for day-to-day functions of his or her own life is a part of healthy aging, both physically and mentally. Family members who provide support and advice, where needed, can add to the length and quality of life experience of a senior, providing that the needs, wishes and best interests of the senior are the primary motivation.

Sometimes though, family involvement disguised as “help� can be to the older person’s harm. Canadian research suggests that between four per cent and ten per cent of seniors will experience some form of abuse at one point in their life. Elder abuse describes a systematic pattern of abusive behaviours within a relationship that is characterized by intimacy, dependency and/or trust. The abusive behaviors exist within a context where their purpose is to gain power, control and induce fear. Elder abuse can take many forms including

financial, verbal, emotional, physical, sexual, psychological, spiritual, economic, violation of rights and exploitation through neglect. Often, more than one type of abuse will occur at the same time.

Financial abuse is the most common type of elder abuse reported. It involves the misuse of a senior’s funds or property through fraud, trickery, theft or force. This type of abuse can include any of the following: stealing money or possessions, misusing bank or credit cards, misusing joint banking accounts, forging a signature on pension cheques or legal documents, misusing a power of attorney, selling or transferring a senior’s property against his or her wishes or best interests, failing to provide agreed upon services to a senior such as care giving, home or vehicle repair, or financial management, refusing to return borrowed money or property as agreed upon, or when requested by a senior or their agent, changing a senior’s will, trusts or inheritance for the abuser’s benefit.

The abuser in abusive situations is often a trusted person in a senior’s life, such as a spouse or partner, family member (often an adult child), caregiver or friend.

Often seniors who are victims of abuse are reluctant to speak out. They may be

more afraid of what will happen to them if they report the abuse, than of the abuse itself. Sometimes, seniors simply do not have the capacity to report abuse. In many cases, coercion or threats are used to intimidate a senior.

Camrose community is working together to offer a support group for older adults who are having difficulties with family relationships. “Relationships With Your Adult Children,� will begin in October 2014 through a partnership with Camrose Primary Care Network, Alberta Health Services Addiction and Mental Health, and Family Violence Action Society. The support group will run for two hours once per week for eight weeks. If you are concerned that you or another older adult might be in an unhealthy relationship with a family member, there are many local resources that can be helpful. You can call to enquire about the support group or any elder abuse concern, get a referral, or report a situation of concern.

Steve Andrew Howe Steve Andrew Howe of Camrose, AB was born at Lloydminster, AB on August 15, 1951; he passed away on July 21, 2014 at the age of 62 years.

Steve ran Starline Poultry Farms south of Calgary, AB in the Red Deer Lake area. He and his wife Deidra raised four children in the Millarville, AB area. Later, in the year 2007, they moved to Camrose, AB where he operated Rose City Dairy. Steve had a strong work ethic, and was passionate about his relationships with family and friends.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Deidra; children Joe (Heather), Patrick (Joanna), Roy (Ashley) and Tammy; as well as numerous extended family, relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose with Rev. Murray Cowan officiating. Inurnment will be held on a later date at Foam Lake, SK. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit, or directly to the charity of one’s choice.

August 12, 1924 – July 13, 2014 Reta Clare Larkin was born on August 12, 1924 in her family home in St. Peter’s Bay, Prince Edward Island. She passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital on July 13, 2014 at the age of 89.

Reta was raised in PEI with her five brothers and four sisters. At the age of 17, she moved to Montreal to nanny for a prestigious doctor and his wife. A year later, she decided to join the Navy. She was stationed in Halifax and there she met Don Kennedy. They were married four months later. Reta was discharged from the navy to attend to her ailing mother in PEI. Seven months later, in November 1945, she moved west to Kelsey.

Over the next decade, Reta and Don had five children. They lived in many different places and experienced many different things. Reta moved to Camrose in 1970 and worked at Rosehaven for 19 years. She retired in 1989 and moved to Wild Rose Villa.

Reta loved to sew and was very good at it. She made quite a few wedding dresses, bridesmaid gowns, flower girl dresses, graduation dresses, Barbie doll dresses and just about anything else you asked her to sew. She also loved going to bingo, reading, playing cards and visiting with her many friends.

Reta was very proud of her family. She was constantly bragging about one grandchild or another. Then she would move on to bragging about the great-grandchildren.

She leaves to mourn her children Doug (Loreen), Tom (Marie), Jo and Jennifer (Allan); son-in-law Lawrence Lee; 11 grandchildren Gerald (Siobhain), Patti, Travis (Sarah), Jill, Allison (Chris), Sara (Jerrit), Scott, Jon (Linsey), Michael, Doug (Rhonda) and Mia; eight great-grandchildren Marissa, Lachlan, Colby, Hayden, Avery, Maggie, Emma and Perry; sisters Theresa, Tilly and Edie; brother Ernie (Robin); and brother-in-law Allen (Donna).

Reta was predeceased by her daughter Colleen; son-in-law Fred; sister Stella; and brothers Frank, Freddie, Steven and Louie.

Margaret Stauffer Margaret Stauffer of Tofield, AB was born in Calgary on July 7, 1925 to Isabelle and Samuel Johnston. She passed away on July 21, 2014 at Tofield Health Center at the age of 89 years.

She is survived by her husband Wilfred; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2014 at Salem Mennonite Church south of Tofield.

Interment took place at the Salem Cemetery. Pastor Mark Loewen and Pastor Merlin Stauffer officiated.

Kenneth George Shute August 26, 1947 – July 20, 2014 Kenneth George Shute of Camrose passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the age of 66 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Angie; daughter Sonja (Jay Van Bavel) of New York City; two grandchildren Jack and Annie Van Bavel; two brothers Alex (Ann) Shute of Camrose, and Gerald (Marie) Shute of St. Albert; three sisters Shirley (Brian) Fairall of Camrose, Betty Marks of Camrose, and Sylvia Shute of Camrose; numerous nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.

Ken was born on August 26, 1947 in Camrose to George and Josephine Shute, and was raised on a family farm near Round Hill.

Ken began his education at Dinant, and later attended Round Hill School. Upon graduation from Round Hill School, Ken moved to Edmonton and completed a diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).

Shortly thereafter, Ken moved to Ottawa to pursue a position with Bell Northern and, as fate would have it, met his future wife Angie Geisler. Ken and Angie were married on December 14, 1971, and made the move back to Alberta in 1972. To their great joy, their daughter Sonja joined the family in 1978.

Upon returning to Alberta, Ken accepted a position with Alberta Government Telephones (later Telus) where he worked for over two decades. Throughout his life, Ken also worked on the family farm. He was, at heart, a farmer and joyfully spent much of his life on the farm surrounded by his brothers, sisters and extended family. Ken was also a very active member of the Round Hill Elks which includes some of his oldest and dearest friends.

Ken enjoyed curling, traveling, great music, Kurt Vonnegut and a mean game of crib. Ken greatly valued his relationships with his family and friends, and everyone loved Ken; he had a wonderful smile, loved to laugh and was always quick to crack a joke. Ken had a kind heart, a generous spirit and a passion for adventure; he will be dearly missed.

Ken was predeceased by his brothers Brian and Walter; sister Marion; and both parents George and Josephine.

A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2014 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating.

The family of Ken would like to say a special thank you to those involved in the service: Rev. Brian Hunter, the Round Hill Elks, Burgar Funeral Home, the Camrose Moose, and to all family and friends for their support.

Reginald Joseph Rehaume February 5, 1949 – July 18, 2014 It with great sadness we announce the passing of Reginald Joseph Rehaume on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the age of 65 in the city of Camrose, AB. Reg was born in Nakusp, BC where he resided until he was five years old. At that time, his family moved to the Camrose area where he grew up and attended school.

He met his wife Denise Shyba, and they were married on April 4, 1970 at the United Church. The happy couple welcomed their only son shortly after, followed by their only daughter in 1972. They were divorced after 17 years.

While residing in Camrose, Reg worked in the sheet metal industry for many years before retiring. His favorite activities included fishing, camping, woodworking, barbecues and coffee with friends, including his lifelong friend John. He was always supportive of his friends and family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and travelling to British Columbia and Arizona.

He is survived by his son Ronald; his daughter Rhonda; and two grandchildren Alexandria and Robert. He also leaves five sisters Donna (Mike), Carol (Bob), Joan (Gerald), Evelyn (Chris) and Fay; many special friends and family; and companion Alberta.

He was predeceased by his parents Leonard and Marie; and his brother Leonard (Eleanor).

A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014 with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Chance to meet Snowbirds

You’ve seen what they can do in the air.

Now you can see what they’re like on the ground.

Members of the RCAF Snowbirds team will be meeting with the public as part of their visit to Camrose.

A Snowbirds Maple Split Ice Cream Social will be held at the Camrose Airport starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1.

“It’s a chance to meet and greet the whole Snowbirds team and get your souvenirs autographed,” said organizer Jadene Mah. The “Maple Split” is a maneuver that is performed by the Snowbirds most significantly each Canada Day over Parliament Hill.

“The Snowbirds Maple Split Ice Cream Social seemed appropriate,” said Mah. Tickets for the ice cream social, which is supported by Wild Rose Co-op, are available starting this week from OleoO’s Ice Cream Castle.

The social will be followed at 9 p.m. by a Snowbirds presentation and a free outdoor “fly-in movie,” also at the airport. Kids of all ages are encouraged to fly their home built airplane creations into the airport for the chance to win prizes.

The Snowbirds will be performing their flat show over Rudy Swanson Park starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, and Big Valley Jamboree Sunday, Aug. 3. They will be signing autographs at the airport after each show.

“We don’t do aerobatic maneuvers during the flat show because it (the show) involves flying over people and buildings” said captain Greg Mendes, a 16-year veteran of the RCAF who joined the Snowbirds last fall. “It is a more restricted show that doesn’t fully showcase what the Snowbirds are capable of doing, but it is still exciting and beautiful.”

Viewers of the performance will also be able to listen to the chatter in the Snowbirds’ cockpits by tuning in to 98.1 CAM-FM. An aviation fair will be held at Hanger 14 at the Camrose airport from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1, 2 and 3.

Snowbirds’ Mendes living a dream

Canadian Snowbirds pilot Captain Greg Mendes is living out a dream.

“Being part of the Snowbirds is an amazing opportunity,” said Mendes, a 16 year veteran of the Royal Canadian Airforce who joined the iconic acrobatic flying team in the fall of 2013. “I love flying the (CT-114) Tutor jet.”

The Tutor jet, which at one time was the main training aircraft for the Canadian forces, is a 51-year-old Canadian tradition.

“I have always wanted to fly the Tutor,” said Mendes.

“It is a very robust and simple aircraft to fly. We call it a little Porsche because it is like a little sports car.”

Mendes is the Snowbirds’ 10th pilot, which means that he doesn’t actually get to perform in shows.

“I am actually the pilot on the ground who observes the pilots and what they are doing,” he said. “If there are any safety issues I need to speak up to our team lead, the number one pilot.”

He is also the team coordinator responsible for advance preparations.

Snowbirds are required to have 500 hours of training in an ejection seat aircraft before they can even apply for a spot on the team.

“They canvass in the fall for candidates to apply for the Snowbirds and then they usually take eight to 10 of them for tryouts in Moose Jaw during the February time frame,” said Mendes.

“Over a period of about three weeks they fly in Tutors with current team members who do the assessments. They are placed in different scenarios where they fly in formation with other team members, do 120 degree banks with up to three times the force of gravity, and rejoins, where they are moving extremely fast and have to do some aggressive maneuvering.”

Mendes said that while Snowbirds face risks when they are performing, that risk is mitigated through months of preparation.

“I am asked if the flying is dangerous and I say no, because there is no reckless activity going on here. Before we even get into an aircraft we have to go through numerous training and safety courses. Then, before we actually fly, we have a period of briefing that covers every-

thing from how the aircraft taxis to the manoeuvres we will be doing during the flight. Once we are finished we usually use a videotape to debrief and critique the flying, something that can take up to an hour and a half for a forty minute flight.”

Mendes said the current Snowbirds have a lot of trust in each other and are very focused on the task at hand.

“I don’t think the ones who do the flying in the shows are nervous at all.

They have been working together for eight months now doing the flight routine that they are doing right now and they know their skills and their weaknesses. They know every day the things that they have to work on.”

The show the Snowbirds will be performing over Camrose Aug. 2 and 3 is called a flat show which is characterized by wraps rather than any aerobatic maneuvering.

“We have four different

kinds of shows we do,” said Mendes. “There is a high show that has a lot of vertical maneuvers, including bursts, a low show, which we do when the cloud ceiling is below 1,500 feet and have a lot of lateral wraps, a nonaerobatic show, and a flat show. We don’t do aerobatic maneuvers in the flat show because it (the show) involves flying over people and buildings. It is a more restricted show that doesn’t fully showcase what the Snowbirds are capable of doing but it is still very exciting and beautiful.”

Mendes grew up in Calgary, but remembers coming to Camrose several times as a youngster for soccer and wrestling tournaments and the Big Valley Jamboree. He joined the Canadian Forces in 1998 after completing his studies at the University of Calgary and has been working as a pilot ever since.

“I did odd jobs while I was going to university like

construction and cooking but I never had a real career like this,” he said. “The Canadian military has been the major career for most of my life.”

The Snowbirds are just over half way through a busy season that has taken them as far east as Newfoundland and as far south as Missouri, and has included a performance in Ottawa on Canada Day. After leaving Camrose they will perform in White Rock and Abbotsford, B.C., Bromont, Quebec, Greenwood, Nova Scotia, Moncton, New Brunswick, and Brantford and Toronto, Ontario.

“It is going to be a busy second half of the season but the team is doing very well,” said Mendes.

Snowbirds team members are usually replaced every two years.

“It used to be a threeyear posting but they have moved it to two years,” said Mendes, “so every year half the team is replaced. We do have two individuals on the team however who have been on the team for four years and three years respectively, so there are times where the guys will stay an extra one or two years.”

Mendes said one of his favourite things to do while he is on tour is meeting with people in different communities.

“I often find that the smaller communities are the most interesting because you have more time to interact more intimately with the people than you do in the bigger cities. We are definitely looking forward to coming to Camrose and we think it is going to be a lot of fun.”

The Snowbirds aerobatic team was formed in 1971 and received squadron status as 431 (Air Demonstration) Squadron in 1978. The team carries on a tradition of excellence established by the aerobatic teams of the RCAF’s earliest days, including the Siskins, flying Siskin IIA biplanes as a three-ship formation between 1929 and 1932, the Golden Hawks, flying their seven gold painted F-86 Sabre jets from 1959 to 1963, and the Golden Centennaires, flying their nine Canadian-built CT-114 Tutor aircraft.

Camrose residents learn about watershed

Camrose residents were treated to a presentation on the Battle River watershed, followed by an interactive tour, led by Nathalie and Erin from the Battle River Watershed Alliance, July 24. We learned the history of

the watershed and the role the BRWA plays, and how water quantity and quality has changed over time.

The walking tour took us through the beautiful Stoney Creek valley where we identified various plants, and learned about the history of the land. This included the coal mine, the tannery,

and the native peoples who lived here. Nathalie and Erin also talked about the importance of skiing, and the early Scandinavian settlers. Lots of questions were asked, and we even came across some delicious Saskatoon berries.

This week, the CWSS will be hosting ‘Beavers

and You’, a presentation by Dr. Glynnis Hood. She will highlight the importance of beavers, how their populations have changed over time, and how beavers and people can live together in harmony. This event will take place on Thursday, July 31, at 7 p.m. in the Stoney Creek Centre.

The unthinkable has happened. Five teams tied for first place in the Powerline Baseball League.

With only four teams qualifying for playoffs, one of the first place teams would soon find itself out of the playoff picture despite having a 9-5 record.

Armena Royals, Leduc Milleteers, Ryley Rebels, Beaumont Angels and the Holden Blue Jays all had the identical record when the season concluded on July 21.

After the dust settled and the math was calculated, it was determined that Beaumont and Holden would play a one-game series to determine which club would advance to the semifinals to play the Armena Royals.

Holden emerged as 5-2 winners of that playoff match and now take on Armena on July 29, and 31 if needed.

The Blue Jays won the first game 3-1 on July 24.

In the other semifinals, Ryley doubled Leduc 4-2 on July 22 and 5-1 on July 24 to advance to the final. The two winners advance to the championship series that will be played in early August.

Pidherney’s Inc. will mobilize and begin rebuilding the road at the West end of the project and progressing to the East. TOILET REBATE PROGRAM The City of Camrose will once again be offering a rebate to those who replace any number of older, high volume toilets with newer, eligible lowflow models. The rebate will be $70 for one toilet; or, if multiple toilets are being replaced, participants will receive a 25% rebate for the cost of each additional toilet (up to a maximum of $50 per toilet). This program is offered to anyone with a water account with the City of Camrose including residents, businesses, and institutions who apply within the determined time frame.

The City of Camrose is offering this rebate to encourage water conservation. The toilet is one of the largest water consuming appliances, attributing to nearly 30% of total indoor water use in residential homes and up to 45% in some businesses or institutions.

Certain conditions will apply in order to qualify for this program.

The City of Camrose must receive: 1. A completed toilet rebate application form.

2. Original receipt of purchase of new, approved low-flow toilet(s). (Will be returned with rebate).

3. Pictures of the washroom, before and after installation.

4. Evidence that the old toilet was made non-functional.

Police investigate collision July 25

Shortly after 2 p.m. police responded to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of 47 Avenue and 39 Street. An investigation determined that an SUV travelling west on 47 Avenue failed to stop for a stop sign and collided with a pickup truck that was travelling south on 39 Street. There were no injuries as a result of the collision, and the driver of the SUV was issued a violation ticket.

A male reported that his vehicle had been entered while parked at the golf course in the late afternoon hours on July 24. Cash as well as three iPod devices were reported stolen from the vehicle.

July 24 A 19-year-old Edmonton woman was issued a Graduated Licence Suspension after police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in the area of 48 Avenue and Mount Pleasant Drive. The female was also charged with a liquor violation for having open liquor in her vehicle, and as well was charged with Possessing a Controlled Substance after police seized a small amount of marihuana from her vehicle.

Shortly after midnight, police stopped and checked a suspicious vehicle that was parked near the Camrose Composite High School. Police spoke with the occupants of the vehicle and gathered grounds to believe the subjects were in the possession of narcotics. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 26 grams of marijuana. A youth was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

War efforts of women to be honoured Continued from page 5

Following the signing of the Armistice, Fowlds returned to France in the winter of 1919, serving at Dax and Dunkirk, and travelling through Northern France en route to Germany. She also served in England for a time in the spring of 1919.

On May 23, 1919 she sailed for Canada on the S.S. Megantic and continued to serve in hospitals in Toronto. Her official end of service came with the General Demobilisation on Oct. 31, 1920.

Fowlds and her husband, Captain Gerald Marryat, settled at Ashfield House in Hastings, where she became a well-known historian and newspaper columnist. She passed away on June 16, 1965.

Smith has written a book about Fowlds with information from Trent University in Ontario.

“She had 200 letters that she had written home and her diaries were bequeathed to Trent University,” said Smith.

Displays The tribute event will also feature a displays by Shirley Stagg, whose father served as a medical officer during the Second World War, as well as by others whose parents or grandparents had some connection to the wars.

“We are going to have one showing the contributions to the war by the railways,” said Smith. “A lot of railway personnel built railways (using materials from disbandoned railways like Grand Trunk Pacific) which took troops and supplies to the front lines.”

There will also be time for those in attendance to share their own personal stories.

“We’re planning a good time of fellowship,” said Smith. “We’re encouraging people to dress in clothing that indicative of the First World War and Second World War eras.”

It’s lavender season in Japan

We are now in the midst of summer and all the wonders that come with it. It’s the time to eat as much fresh produce as possible. In this area, melons are a local specialty. Melons are what would commonly be referred to as cantaloupe. They can range in price from what someone would typically pay in Camrose all the way into the hundreds of dollars, and some have been sold in the thousands! You can even buy watermelons that are square and some that are black. The black (Densuke) watermelon melons originated in Hokkaido. The average selling price of one is generally around 25,000 yen ($250). I’ve found out that melons are so expensive because they are most commonly given to important people as gifts.

Some people describe them as having the perfect taste and look. Fruit is a common giftgiving item here and because of that it is desirable to only give the best.

Lavender is another local specialty and it’s a popular ice cream, called soft cream. Last year I was able to have an ice cream cone that was melon/ lavender swirl flavour. Delicious! You can see the purple flowers around town now.

Nearly every other street is lined with lavender. You can track the growth of the lavender online too so you know

the best time to visit. I have a great view of the lavender field that is in Kamifurano since it grows in a green space called Hinode Park. It’s located across a field from my house and I can easily see lavender as I cook and wash dishes. There is no shortage of lavender products for sale here as well.

Summer is a great time to enjoy festivals. You can eat, spend time with loved ones, sing karaoke, and watch performances and fireworks.

Another main attraction of a festival that takes place near the middle to end of July is a series of large paper lanterns.

I would say that they are what would be referred to as floats in a parade. Each lantern is constructed by the people of Kamifurano. They are covered with small paper squares and then are painted. Last July I arrived in Kamifurano just in time to attend their Sikisai festival.

My senses were on overload as I took it all in. The mountains, flowers, people, food – everything was new to me. A group that resembled the Power Rangers performed on a stage in the park as did a group of taiko drummers. The energy and strength that comes from those drums shake me to my core each time I hear them. I remember thinking that this new place seems exciting and the people were incredibly kind to me from the get-go. Last year the town mascot, named

Laveton, made its debut. It’s a giant pig that wears a lavender coloured top hat and overcoat.

Pork is another one of Kamifurano’s specialties. Laveton actually has a full profile complete with its birthday and hobbies. Last summer I was at the town train station when an elderly man approached me.

He gestured that he would like to take a picture of me with a wooden Laveton. These are some of the memories that I have from here that make me think: “did that really happen or was it a dream?”

And as I sit here adding my final touches to this article I realize that I have come full circle in this sister city overseas journey. Since I’ve been living in Kamifurano for almost 12 months I have been able to attend/participate in countless festivals and activities. I’ve accumulated memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. I have a good understanding of what to expect for the coming year. Of course there will be some surprises and more firsts along the way. For example, next month I plan to see some rice paddy art (tambo) for my first time. Tambo is an art form that originated in Japan. People plant rice of various colours and types to create giant pictures in a rice field. It looks remarkable!
