Hunter Hayes

Hunter Hayes was named best New Artist of 2012 Hunter Hayes will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 1. The Country Music Association’s choice as the best New Artist of 2012 earned his trophy because of his intense, single-minded dedication to his music. Hunter Hayes works at his craft virtually every waking hour. In his world, there are no days off. There are no hobbies or outside interests. Everything is focused on musical self-improvement. “With me, it’s always going to be music,” he states. “That’s the one thing I know. That is my thing. That is my place. I make music because it’s the only way I can breathe. This is how I want to spend the rest of my life.” His laser-like focus has resulted in an album that is the talk of the countrymusic community. He wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on Hunter Hayes. He co-pro-

duced it. He sings all the vocals, and he plays all of the 30-some instruments heard on the record. The barn-burning “Storm Warning” became the collection’s debut Gold Single. His gripping ballad “Wanted” soared to No. 1 and is quickly nearing Double Platinum status. Lilting, groove-soaked “Somebody’s Heartbreak” has become the album’s third major hit – becoming a Top 30 hit in only two weeks and was most added week of release. Whether mournful on a ballad like “Rainy Season” or passionately upbeat on a tempo tune such as “Love Makes Me,” his performances on Hunter Hayes are consistently engaging. The album’s textures range from the stately, thoughtful “Cry with You” to the upbeat yet philosophical “Faith to Fall Back On” or the sadly resigned “All You Ever.” Although Hunter Hayes is

only 21 years old, these are the songs of a proverbial “old soul.” Despite his youth, he already has a lifetime of musical experience. The Louisiana native began picking up various instruments when he was only two years old. At age four, he joined his first band. He took his accordion on stage and sang “Jambalaya” with Hank Williams Jr. that year, too. At age six, he was cast in the Robert Duvall film The Apostle. The actor gave Hayes his first guitar. Hunter recorded his first album when he was nine and his second at the age of 10. “Being an only child absolutely helped,” he says of his extraordinarily youthful development. “I credit a lot to that. It gave me more time to be alone and spend more time with the art. “I won’t say I grew up faster, but I definitely got into what I wanted to do

quicker because I had to. Music was all I had. And my parents did everything they could to support me. They learned a business they knew nothing about, just so that I could make music. I was surrounded by positive energy all the time.” Hunter Hayes spent his early teenage years playing shows and making two more albums. That is also when he began to develop as a songwriter. “At school, I was a quiet kid. I was really shy. My safe zone was music. In writing music, I had my friend, the one thing that would never let me down. Writing songs was like me keeping a journal. I really took it seriously when I realized how powerful of a tool it was and how much I needed it. “I spent a lot of time in my little studio that I built at our house. I spent so much time there that I neglected going out or hanging out.

I skipped all the parties. I skipped the prom every year because it always fell on a date when I had a gig to play. “I voluntarily skipped out on a lot. I was working on song demos. That was the one thing that was going really well. I was going to give every minute to it that I possibly could.” During his high-school years, his parents began taking him on trips to Nashville. Gradually, a team of supportive entertainmentindustry insiders began to form around the youngster in Music City. He found interest from a manager, a song publisher, a record label and a producer during those trips. When his mother found out about a correspondence course that her son could take to complete his senior year, the family moved to Nashville in 2008. Continued on page 4

Hunter Hayes feels blessed Continued from page 2

“I made a promise to myself that as soon as I finished that course, I was going to write at least a song a week,” Hayes recalls. “In fact, that first week, I wrote a song every day. As soon as I finished that course, I was in the song-publishing office at least once a week, writing with somebody.” Songs About Nothing, an independent record he played all the instruments on himself, was an example he used with Atlantic Records and producer Dann Huff that he could “do it all” on his debut major-label effort. “Songs About Nothing was kind of my sales pitch to say, ‘I know it’s a leap of faith, but this proves that it can be done. This proves that technologically, it’s possible. Time-wise, it’s feasible. And creatively, it might actually be a good idea.’ “I was asking a major label to give me a budget to make a record by myself, with Huff. Dann even took a little while to warm up to the idea. But to his credit, and to everyone’s credit, everybody was open-minded, positive about it and optimistic. I think everybody’s mind-set was, ‘Why not try it? Let’s see if it works.’ Since the release of Hunter Hayes, the singersongwriter has embarked on a blitzkrieg of television appearances. He has sung on The Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning

America, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Talk, E! News and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. One highlight was his appearance on the ABCTV special The CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock, performing “Wanted” surrounded by 50,000 fans. “It was nerve wracking, but when I was singing and the people around me were singing my song back to me, that was one of those moments. I was like, ‘This is, apparently, working.’ Then when ‘Wanted’ went to No. 1, that was another one. Getting announced as the opening act on the Carrie Underwood tour was definitely a big moment for me. Along the way, he also picked up a Teen Choice Award as the Male Country Artist of the Year, earned a No. 1 video with “Wanted,” won a BMI songwriting award for “Storm Warning” and was a nominee at both the Academy of Country Music Awards and the CMT Music Awards. “There’s an energy that happens live. That’s where I’m most myself. There is nothing as honest as my live performance. That is what I live for every day. “When I get on stage, that’s my home. That’s my element, and I’m not shy anymore. That’s where I’m comfortable. Getting to play live every night, that’s what I’ve always dreamed about. “I’m blessed beyond belief.”

Rucker takes a different approach Darius Rucker will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 2. “This time, I really wanted to do something different, says Darius Rucker. “I went straight from my first album into my second, and it really just picked up where the other one left off. So when we went into the studio on this one, we really wanted to take our time and not even start worrying about a record until we had songs that we felt were the right ones. And when I heard what would become the lead single, ‘True Believers’ played back, I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve never done anything like that before!’ “True Believers is a triumphant reflection of the rewards and challenges of sustaining a marriage – was the first song recorded for this project and became the first single and title track for Rucker’s third and most ambitious country studio

album. While his previous two albums topped the Billboard Country Album chart and produced five number one singles, on True Believers he opted to dig deeper, work with new collaborators, and create something more resonant both musically and emotionally. “I just started with a list of guys I wanted to write with, says Rucker. “The process doesn’t really change – you go off in a corner and write. And I’m very happy with what we got. Rucker, who first attained multi-platinum status as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Hootie & the Blowfish, wrote ten of the twelve tracks on True Believers – ranging from the feel-good sing-along “Radio to the sophisticated narrative of “Shine. He expresses special pride in the raw and realistic sentiments of songs like “Miss You and “I Will Love You Still.

“I don’t write a lot of break-up songs, he says, “but on that one, I think there’s a whole new freshness to the pain in my voice. The two songs Rucker didn’t have a hand in writing are both major events of their own. “Love Without You features Sheryl Crow, with whom Rucker had wanted to record ever since they sang together at a VH1 function almost twenty years ago. The singer is quick to give credit where it’s due for the fact that all of these elements hang together so cohesively on True Believers. For the third time, Frank Rogers served as producer for a Darius Rucker album, along with co-writing three songs. “Frank’s the guy, says Rucker. “He just gets what I want to do. He’s my George Martin - not to compare myself to the Beatles, but I want him to do everything I do.

Brody didn’t give up on his dream

Dean Brody will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 1. Without risk there’s no reward,” says Dean Brody. “It’s important to be fearless. You need to be persistent. You can’t give up.” Brody would know. If there’s one thing the Jaffray, BC born singer/songwriter has proven in his career, it’s that he’s not afraid to pull up stakes and risk everything to chase down his dreams. Fair to say that ethic is a good part of the inspiration behind the title to his new record, Trail In Life, the follow up to his 2009 self-titled debut, and first on Open Road Recordings. “My life’s been kind of a trail – it hasn’t been one spot for thirty years – it’s been a bunch of different places, different memories and different friends. It’s about time passing and reminiscing,” Brody says of the album. “Songs about driving, good old times, good old days and growing up.” But while Trail In Life may dwell on the good old times Brody remembers so fondly, his own trail in life and pursuit of a career in music has sometimes been a struggle – a ‘one step forward, two steps back’ story of perseverance, dedication and hope that, even if it’s not the focus of his latest batch of songs, lends depth to his music and lyrics. “We’ve moved so much and done so many crazy things,” Brody says, “but each leap of faith has been about the music, and they’ve all been big ones.” First there was the move to Tennessee in 2004 after landing a two-year deal with a Nashville based music publisher. Brody wrote plenty, and honed his craft relentlessly, but when the contract ran out he was forced to pack up and head home to Canada; taking shifts at the same sawmill he’d first worked at in high school, looking for permanent work as a miner and preparing to pack in his dreams for good. Instead, on the strength of an eleventh hour call from Nashville based producer and good friend, Matt Rovey and an offer of a deal with Broken Bow Records, Brody turned the car around and headed back to Nashville. That second attempt at a Nashville career paid off big time: His single, “Brothers”, made an impact at radio in both the US and Canada. And although a waterskiing accident on the Potomac River during his first radio tour required him to undergo extensive reconstructive surgery, Brody persevered. “Brothers” made the coveted top 30 in the US and had significant impact culminating in the surprise presentation and official certificate of appreciation from the US Army for his songs’ contribution to the Armed Forces.

Oak Ridge Boys return to Camrose By Murray Green

The boys are back by popular demand. “The Big Valley Jamboree is one of the best music festivals anywhere in the United States, or in Canada and around the world as far as that goes,” said Oak Ridge Boys bass singer Richard Sterban. “To be a part of that is a wonderful experience. To be invited back is the real compliment.” Sterban has lost track of how many times the Oak Ridge Boys have performed at the Jamboree. “That part of the country has the best country music fans of anywhere,” he said. “To be on stage and see the audience and a sea of people in large numbers is great. To be a part of that is very exciting for us. We are certainly excited to return once again. We have fond memories of the past. There is no question about that.” The Oak Ridge Boys were honoured with a 41 Million Album Sales Award during the groups 41st anniversary year in June. “That is since we have gone country,” said Sterban. “We sold quite a few gospel albums before that. We have been busy for 41 years and we are just releasing our first live album.” The achievement comes in wake of the group’s recent release of the new Boys Night Out CD that the Oak Ridge boys will share with Big Valley Jamboree fans on Saturday, Aug. 2 beginning at 5 p.m. It’s their firstever live country album, featuring all their iconic hits, including “Elvira,” “Y’all Come Back Saloon,” “American Made,” and “Thank God for Kids.” “It’s something that we have wanted to do for a long time. Our fans have been asking for one. They enjoy our studio projects, but they told us since we are so much more exciting live that we needed to try a live album,” said Sterban. “For one reason or another other opportunities presented themselves and we didn’t get to it. We always put the live project on the back burner. Last year we decided not to do that any longer. Duane, who co-produced our last few albums, finally took the bull by the horns and booked recording dates.” Instead of going from city to city to record shows, the Oak Ridge Boys played at the same venue to get the same sound and acoustics for each recording. “We recorded all 11 shows in the same place, in Laughlin, Nevada. It was at the Riverside Casino and Resort,” shared Sterban. “After we recorded the 11 shows, we mixed up the music for each show, so

we had a web of music to chose from. We selected the songs that were the best example of what the Oak Ridge Boys were about. We tweaked them a little bit but we were very careful not to over tweak it to keep it live. When we play in Camrose it will be songs from the live album, which is a greatest hits album. Camrose fans will be in for a treat.” The time-line for the live album wasn’t that important for Richard and the band because they were so busy. “The success has been so good that we may do another live album. We certainly recorded enough music to do it,” he added. The Oak Ridge Boys have launched the summer leg of their 2014 concert tour with nearly 150 shows across North America. The next project will be a gospel album. “After the summer tour and our stop in Camrose, about mid-August, we will begin work on a gospel release,” explained Sterban. “It will feature old familiar hymns that will be familiar to anyone who has been to church or Sunday school.” The Oak Ridge Boys offer a distinctive and recognizable sound. The fourpart harmonies and upbeat songs from the group have made dozens of country hits and a number one pop smash hit. Every time they step before an audience, the Oaks bring four decades of charted singles, and 50 years of tradition, to a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere. And each remains as enthusiastic about the process as they have ever been. Richard, lead singer Duane Allen, tenor Joe Bonsall and baritone William Lee Golden, comprise one of country’s truly legendary acts. Although music fans have picked “Elvira” as the clear cut choice as their favourite, Sterban has another favourite. “I would have to say “Thank God For Kids” is probably the most meaningful song we have done. We will be performing that song at the Big Valley Jamboree and it is on our live album. It is always an experience to hear William Lee Golden sing that song. It touches your heart. At this stage in our lives it is not only thank God for kids, but thank God for grandkids as well.” The group has scored 12 gold, three platinum, and one double platinum album, one double platinum single and had more than a dozen national number one singles and over 30 top 10 hits. Stuart returns to Jamboree

LANDSCAPE PRODUCTS All In-Stock

Marty Stuart will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 3. Marty Stuart is a five time Grammy winner, platinum recording artist, Grand Ole Opry star, country music archivist, Southern culture historian, photographer, musician, songwriter, television show host, charismatic force of nature, and country music fan. Since starting out singing gospel as a child, Stuart, 54, has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music with a missionary’s zeal. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the 1970s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band during the 1980s and a charttopping tenure as a solo artist in the 1990s. The turn of the century saw Stuart looking inward to make deeply felt records paying homage to his love of vintage gospel, his Native American passions, and as always, his core – foot-stompin’, tailshakin’, honky tonkin’, rockin’ hillbilly music. His latest musical oeuvre is ably supported by the coolest cats in Nashville – his backing band, The Fabulous Superlatives: guitarist Kenny Vaughan, drummer Harry Stinson, and bassist Paul Martin. Stuart’s zest for country music is also seen regularly on television.

Ell was a class valedictorian

Lindsay Ell will be performing at the Big Valley Jamboree kickoff party July 31. Lindsay Ell is a country music singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Calgary. She performed at the South by Southwest music festival, held in Austin, Texas, in March 2009, the welcome reception of the 2009 Juno Awards held in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was also a featured artist at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Lindsay started playing the piano at six, but then discovered her father’s collection of guitars scattered throughout the house. At eight, she switched instruments. “I fell in love with the guitar,” says Lindsay. “It’s a huge part of who I am.” Lindsay fell in love with the blues and started songwriting at age 10. She was valedictorian for her class in high school, from which she graduated a year early. She went on to study business at the University of Calgary, in addition to pursuing her music career. Randy Bachman discovered Lindsay when she was only 15 years old. Bachman described her as “the most talented and multi-faceted artist I’ve come across in many years”. Bachman co-wrote and produced her first album, Consider This. It was recorded at Bachman’s studio on Saltspring Island, and Ell herself co-wrote most of the 11 songs. On her 2009 album, Alone, she moved to a more acoustic sound compared to her debut. In addition to working with Bachman, Lindsay has collaborated with Danny Michel, Russell Broom, Bill Bell, and Damhnait Doyle. She has also shared the stage across North America with Suzie McNeil, Shawn Mullins, Serena Ryder, and blues pioneer Buddy Guy.

Chad Brownlee comes from a hockey background Chad Brownlee will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 2. From the time he was five years old, Chad Brownlee had dreams of one day becoming a professional hockey player. Growing up in Canada, he quickly developed a love for the game and in 2003, was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL entry draft. It would be difficult to describe Chad without mentioning his hockey background, as it has made him who he is today. It wasn’t until later in life that he realized another passion burning deep inside him – music. At 17, Chad was given his first guitar as a gift from his parents. Self taught, he quickly learned how to put strings into chords and chords into songs. Soon after, he was composing his own songs. Although he had no ambition to follow a career in music, he used it as a release from the game of hockey. With his sights still set on the NHL, Chad moved away to attend Minnesota State University where he was offered a full ride hock-

Chad Brownlee was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks.

ey scholarship. He made sure he packed his guitar. Throughout his years at Minnesota State, Chad excelled in both academics and athletics, while his passion for music continued to grow. In his fourth year at university he was selected as team captain by his teammates; a tes-

tament to the character and leadership qualities he possesses. A gritty stay at home defensemen, Chad was as reliable off the ice as he was on. That year, he was also nominated for the NCAA Hockey Humanitarian award for his song “The Hero I See”. It was writ-

ten in memory of a young boy who lost his battle to leukemia at the tender age of nine. The song went on to raise thousands of dollars for the Anthony Ford Foundation, which helps underprivileged kids who can’t afford to play hockey. It was Anthony’s last wish.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Minnesota State, Chad went on to the Vancouver Canucks training camp, where he would learn from the players he grew up idolizing. After a year of playing in the minor leagues and battling with injuries, the decision came to hang up the skates, like a hand pulling on his jersey saying, “Follow me.” It was something he had never imagined doing, but he was driven to pursue a career in music. Chad’s hard work and dedication towards hockey has prepared him for the rigors of his future musical endeavors. After his exit from professional hockey, Chad teamed up songwriter, guitar player and producer Mitch Merrett on a debut album which featured the single “The Best That I Can (Superhero).” His songs are honest and real, with clearly painted metaphors. He is an artist that is all about the music and has a passion to improve and evolve as a singer/songwriter. For Chad Brownlee, this is only the beginning.

Zac Brown Band known for entertaining Zac Brown Band will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 2. Zac Brown Band may have ten hit singles, two platinum-selling records and countless dedicated fans, but to hear its members talk they’re just getting warmed up. That’s right – after numerous nights in front of packed arenas and amphitheaters, things are just beginning to come together for this accomplished band of brothers, led by one of the most charismatic individuals ever to don a beanie and dominate radio. “I think that we’ve grown so much over the past few years as individual musicians and as a cohesive unit,” observes drummer Chris Fryar. “As a band we have really grown together. And we play really, really well together. That increasing level of maturity really shows up on ‘Uncaged.’” “We’re always trying to push the barrier of our musicianship and I’m proud to say that there is a little bit of something for everyone,” adds Brown. “It’s your basic country-Southern rock-bluegrass-reggae-jam record.” The addition of percussionist Daniel de los Reyes has helped the band move the groove along. His new band mates describe de los Reyes – known for performing and recording with Stevie Nicks, Sting, Peter Frampton and Earth, Wind & Fire, among others – as a consummate professional. “It was really great to have him along,” says guitarist/keyboardist Coy Bowles. “Danny’s not going to be playing timbales over a bluegrass song. So if he needs to play a shaker all the way through a song, that’s what he’ll do. He knows when to be aggressive and when to lay back. I think the album has a real cool dynamic because of his sensitivity to all that.” Brown has built a virtual southern Brill Building of songwriting talent.

Zac Brown Band delivers a show Continued from page 17

His Southern Ground banner flies over everything from metalworking to leather goods. In addition to housing offices and rehearsal space, the former industrial warehouse in Atlanta that serves as the company’s headquarters also features a full kitchen for “Chef Rusty” Hamlin and his crew, the better to power those muchtalked-about “Eat & Greets” that Brown, a former restaurant owner, hosts for lucky fans. The most farsighted plans reach beyond the warehouse, to a plot of land south of Atlanta where plans pro-

ceed for a nonprofit camp aimed to help kids overcoming behavioral and learning disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds. Simultaneously, Southern Ground has secured a studio in Nashville for future recording needs. At this point it’s safe to say that the Zac Brown Band is more than an act – it’s quickly becoming a way of life. So given all of the creative energy around it, new material has never been a problem for Zac Brown Band. The band was originally built on the songwriting partnership of Zac Brown and Wyatt Durette. Since then the brain trust has expanded

to encompass the artists on the label as well as members of the band. No matter how heavily the band is touring, something is always percolating. Asked whether the band still feels at home on country radio, bassist John Driskell Hopkins notes that country radio has grown and evolved just as the band has. “It’s southern radio to me, and I don’t think we’re doing anything southern people wouldn’t like.” In many ways Zac Brown Band is an unlikely success story. Bands who cover so much territory tend to become critic

Lonestar will be performing at the Big Valley Jamboree kickoff party July 31. A 20-year anniversary is cause for celebration, and Lonestar is marking this career milestone in more ways than one. Reunited with original lead singer Richie McDonald, the multi-platinum country music quartet is on an extensive anniversary tour that includes 90 dates scheduled in North America alone. “Twenty years ago, when we put this little band together to play in some bars and make a little money, I dreamed it pretty good,” admits keyboard player and songwriter Dean Sams. “But I never dreamed it quite this good.” Known for merging their country roots with strong melodies and rich vocals, Lonestar has amassed RIAA-certified sales in excess of ten million album units since its national launch in 1995 and achieved ten #1 country hits including “No News,” “Come Crying To Me,” and its crossover smash “Amazed” (which was also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first record since 1983’s “Islands in the Stream” to top both charts). The band’s awards include a 1999 ACM Single of The Year for “Amazed” (the song also won the Song of the Year award) and the 2001 CMA Vocal Group of the Year. But it isn’t hit records and trophies that have kept Lonestar going strong. All four members originally hail from blue collar households, and place a premium on the value of hard work. Originally formed in Nashville in 1992, Lonestar played over 500 shows before landing a recording contract. “We traveled for two and a half, maybe three years, just playing in bars,” Britt recalls. “We were starting from zero back then.” But all those gigs paid off. By the time they released their self-titled debut album in 1995, they already had an enthusiastic fan base. Their first single, “Tequila Talkin’,” went top 10 on the country charts. It’s follow-up did even better: “No News” would be the first of many #1 singles for Lonestar. Lonestar continued to ascend in the years that fol-

lowed. Their third album, 1999’s Lonely Grill, was certified multi-platinum in both the United States and Canada. In addition to “Amazed,” which was #1 with country audiences for eight weeks in a row, Lonely Grill yielded three more #1 country hits: “Smile,” “Tell Her,” and “What About Now.” The 2001 release I’m Already There topped the country album charts, as did the band’s 2003 retrospective From There To Here: The Greatest Hits, which produced yet another #1 single, “My Front Porch Looking In.” For all their record and ticket sales, the biggest accomplishment of the band’s storied career has been witnessing the impact of Lonestar songs in the lives of others. “Music is a very powerful tool and can help people going through both good and bad times,” observes McDonald. “When you can truly say that what you do can make a difference, that it really can impact somebody’s life in a positive way, that’s the greatest thing,” admits Sams. That timeless appeal transcends nationality, too. A recent string of European dates with Reba McEntire, Ricky Skaggs, and Little Big Town found Lonestar thrilling audiences in England, Ireland, Switzerland, and Germany. In a four-star review of their performance at Wembley Arena, UK daily The Guardian noted that Lonestar “got an even bigger welcome than McEntire,” and praised how “they reminded us of country’s greatest strength: picture-painting, story-based, tear-your-heart-out lyrics that are the most direct and lucid in popular music.” Lonestar is currently hard at work making a new, self-produced album. “It’s kind of a no-brainer for us to come along at this stage in our careers and say, ‘Yes, we can produce our own music.’ After all, nobody knows what Lonestar should sound like better than Lonestar,” says drummer Keech Rainwater. “I’m proud that as a band, collectively, we’re smart enough to know what we need to do and how to get it done.”

Alee a rising star

Alee will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 1. Alee brings her fresh up tempo style and sound to listeners across the world, redefining country music – and with a strong musical background, she has the goods to back it up. A singer-songwriter-musician-entertainer regarded for her musicianship, the strength of her original songs, and charismatic performance, Alee has the versatility of a veteran performer with the ability to take her songs from full band down to a simple acoustic performance, varying each show from the preceding one, in an essence described by her audiences as engaging, passionate and authentic. Her ability to entertain is reflected with performances and accolades which span festivals including Carlton Trail Jamboree, Westerner Days, Capital Ex, Canadian Finals Rodeo, while growing recognition to the East and south to Nashville. With experience and performances that have been garnering merit since 2005, she is well prepared for the leap further onto the country scene. Fresh out of the studio, Alee’s original, and first single, entitled “Real” released internationally hit #53 on the BDS charts, followed by “What’re We Waitin’ For?” debuting at #47 on the Mediabase chart. Alee started 2013 off with a bang with the release of “Don’t Say You Love Me” – which climbed the Canadian Country BDS and Mediabase radio charts to the Top 25 after only seven weeks.

Oak Ridge Boys happy to be returning to Camrose Continued from page 14

The Oak Ridge Boys are a tradition that extends back to the Second World War. The original group, based in Knoxville, Tennessee, began performing country and gospel music in nearby Oak Ridge and they called themselves the Oak Ridge Quartet. They began regular Grand Ole Opry appearances in the fall of 1945. By the late ‘60s, with more than 30 members having come and gone, they had a lineup that included Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, Noel Fox, and Willie Wynn. Among the Oaks’ many acquaintances in the gospel field were Bonsall, a former streetwise Philadelphia youth who embraced gospel music; and Sterban, who was singing in quartets along with backing up Elvis Presley. The four became friends, and when the Oaks needed a bass and tenor in 1972 and 1973, respectively, Sterban and Bonsall got the calls. For

a while, the group remained at the pinnacle of the gospel music circuit. It was there they refined the strengths that would soon make them an across-the-board attraction. The group then branched into country music. “Y’all Come Back Saloon,” was an instant hit on country charts. Their career has spanned not only decades, but also formats. In 1977, Paul Simon tapped the Oaks to sing backup for his hit “Slip Slidin’ Away.” The Oaks’ high-energy stage show remains the heart and soul of what they do, and they refine it several times a year, striving to keep it fresh well into the future. “We’ve experienced a lot of longevity,” adds Sterban. “I think the reason we have more than 150 shows a year is because we still love what we do. There is no mistake about that. It is not a difficult thing because as long as we have the desire, the longing to actually get up there and

do it, we will. We love to sing together and harmonize together. We enjoy being creative. It’s what our lives are all still about. We have no plans to retire.” In 2009, the group recorded a CD, The Boys Are Back prior to their last appearance in Camrose. It was a cross-over into the pop-rock sound that got the attention of a younger crowd. It proved the boys still could rock and entertain many age groups. “I think producer David Cobb took us down some roads we might not have traveled on our own,” said Sterban. “The music may be different, but he did not try to change us, he challenged us.” Besides the busy schedule of touring and recording albums, Sterban wrote his autobiography From Elvis to Elvira: My Life On Stage about a year ago. He talks about his life as a back up singer for Elvis Presley, as well as the Oak Ridge Boys.

“I’m going into my 42nd year with the Oak Ridge Boys, I started in 1972, but the two years prior to joining the band, I sang in a group called J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet,” explained Sterban. “I sang with Elvis, the king of rock and roll. Over the years people have asked me what was Elvis like. Tell me some Elvis stories. One day I got to thinking, I better start writing some of this down, so that is what I did. I didn’t actually write the book, I provided the stories and material.” Elvis historian Steven Robinson wrote the book from Sterban’s account on his life on the road with famous singer. “It took us a year to write it. I spent many hours talking with Steven and into his recorder about my experiences with Elvis. Once I got into the project, I realized there were more stories than just my time with Elvis. I was with

him for about a year and a half. My experiences are in the book, but there were more stories to tell, so I decided to talk about my decision to leave the king of rock and roll, and join the Oak Ridge Boys,” continued Sterban. “I wanted to go on to bigger and better things. One day I got a call from William Lee Golden and he told that the bass singer was leaving and they wanted me to join them. I didn’t hesitate because I was a fan of the Oak Ridge Boys. History has proven that I made a very wise decision.” The book is Sterban’s personal story. “I talk about my voice changing and how it changed my life. I’ve had a great life. I was able to sing with Elvis, the Oak Ridge Boys and do the things I love to do,” said Sterban. “I can speak for all of us, we are excited to come back to Camrose.”

Miranda Lambert returns to the Big Valley Jamboree to close out the weekend in Camrose.

Miranda Lambert will be performing on Big Valley Jamboree’s main stage August 3. “My songs talk about real things,” says Miranda Lambert. “Things that I’ve been through or I’ve witnessed through my friends and family – even my parents’ private investigation business. If I feel it, I can sing it and make anyone believe it.” Big talk from a smalltown Texas girl, but Lambert’s got the goods to back it up. The old-school passion and power of her 2005 debut Kerosene took it to the top of both the country charts and the critics’ polls. Now the two-time CMA Horizon Award nominee returns with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, on which she raises the stakes both musically and emotionally. “You can take each song on this album and compare it to the first record, and you can see that it’s an upgrade” says Lambert. “It shows two years of growth. I also let people in a lot more than I did on the last record – so I’m a little scared, but I’m proud.” One of the oldest clichés in the music business is that you have your whole life to write your first record – and then if it’s a hit, the second album is written on a schedule, while you’re busy promoting and touring. But with Crazy-Ex Girlfriend, Lambert proves that for a writer of her calibre, life on the road can actually add experience and perspective. “At this point, you write ‘em on the road or you can’t write at all,” says Lambert. “You work, you get tired, but you also grow up. I’m more mature. I learned a lot about people and about who to trust, and I go through things that other girls go through, and that’s the vulnerable side of the record.” Miranda Lambert first exploded onto the scene as a finalist in the 2003 season of the Nashville Star television series. She didn’t win – a result she has described as a blessing. “I was hoping not to win,” she once said. “The winner had to go in right after the contest and make a record in a couple of weeks, and I wasn’t ready.” Instead, she got the best of both worlds – Columbia Nashville, which had right of first refusal on the show’s performers – signed Lambert to a deal, but she had the time and opportunity to make the album that she really wanted to make. Kerosene debuted at number one on the country charts (only the sixth time a new artist entered in at the top), and went on to earn Lambert nominations for the CMA’s Horizon Award and the ACM’s Top New Female Vocalist Award. It also earned her a Grammy nomi-

nation. Kerosene garnered critical praise from countless outlets and was named one of the best albums of the year by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Blender Magazine, iTunes, Tennessean and many more. Most impressive, though, was the fact that Lambert, still a teenager, had written or co-written 11 of Kerosene’s twelve songs, which had the authentic feel of old-school, take-no-prisoners country music. The album marked the arrival of a major new songwriting talent. Extensive touring with George Strait and Keith Urban followed, raising her profile and sharpening her on-stage act. Her peers took notice. “There’s a girl named Miranda Lambert who is a great songwriter,” Michelle Branch (whose band, The Wreckers, was also a Horizon Award nominee) said. “We always watch her shows and go, ‘Oh, I wish I would’ve written that song.’” When it came time to start work on a new album, says Lambert, she quickly realized that she really wanted an extension of, rather than a different direction from, the debut. The songs on Crazy Ex Girlfriend reveal a blossoming songwriter whose gifts continue to expand, as well as a singer with impeccable taste in material. Lambert again wrote or co-wrote the bulk of the album’s songs – eight of the 11 tracks – but she also interprets the work of some of the world’s finest writers, including Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, and Carlene Carter. “In order for me to cut any song I didn’t write, I want to feel it more than I feel my own words,” she says. “It has to feel like it’s something I could have written.” Crazy Ex-Girlfriend presents Lambert as a woman you damn sure don’t want to do wrong. “We had started a song called ‘Favorite Ex-Girlfriend,’ which was kind of a sweet song,” she recalls. “And I said, you know, I hate this, it’s not me – I don’t do sweet songs.” With a quick change of a single word, an unforgettable new kind of anthem was born. “Everyone, especially the guys, will relate to it,” she says. “Whenever I play it and ask if there are any crazy ex-girlfriends out there, the girls all scream!” The results illustrate the depth of a genuine artist, and point to Miranda Lambert’s true potential as a career artist – the kind everyone thinks the music industry doesn’t make anymore. “Every song on this album is something I care about,” she says. “Something I want to get across to people and you can hear that in my singing.”
