It is a dramatic and heartfelt reenactment of a First World War experience that is told through Mary’s memories and dreams. Rebecca also plays Sergeant Gordon Muriel Flowerdew in a challenging dual role.

Mary’s Wedding is directed by Sandra McLay. A Founders Days dessert theatre will be held at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m.

It will be followed by a Sunday matinee performance on Aug. 17 beginning at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station by calling 780-672-3099, or at Candler Art Gallery.

The film Canadians at War will be shown prior to the play, along with a talk by Marion Bennett and a sing-along performance led by vocalist and pianist Michelle Peterson.

On behalf of the teachers, administrators, and support staff, we would like to welcome each and every student to Battle River School Division for the 2014-2015 school year.

Staff will continue to strive to achieve the vision: Every Student, Every Day, A Success by providing a holistic educational experience focused on the academic, character, and relationship development of each student. We are looking forward to working together with parents and the community this year to ensure students are well prepared for their future.

In addition, we’ve had a number of leadership changes and, as a result, are welcoming several new members to the BRSD Division and School Administration teams, as listed on this page.

2014-2015 promises to be an exciting time that will bring many rewards and successes for each student in Battle River School Division. Let’s get started!

Due to longer instructional days, most “Feeder Schools” have additional ‘feeder days’ on which students will not be in attendance. Holden, Ryley, Allan Johnstone and Cornerstone Christian School are operating with a four-day week. Principals at “Feeder Schools” and at the four-day week schools will likely distribute a slightly modified school year calendar for their students.

Learning Institute

OCTOBER

Schools, Division Office, and other worksites in Battle River School Division #31 will be closed on August 28, 2014 to permit all staff to participate in a Learning Institute. School sites will also be closed on August 29.

NEW REGISTRATIONS Students new to Battle River School Division #31 should register at the school they will be attending and provide a birth certificate when registering.

BUSING SERVICE

Students residing in the Beaver County, Camrose County and Flagstaff County Wards Students new to these wards should register for bus service by calling the Transportation Department at 780-672-6131, extension 5244, or 1-800-262-4869, extension 5244, well in advance of school opening so that efficient routes can be planned. Students who were transported to a Division-operated school by bus during the last school year will be included in our plans for the 2014-2015 school year. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the Director or Assistant Director of Transportation.

Students residing in the City of Camrose Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost; those students who were registered in a Battle River Regional Division school last year and were eligible for busing will be planned for again this year. Reminder: Bus passes will not be sent to schools, but must be picked up at the BRSD office. Students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus.

• Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $375.00 per student in grades 1 to 12, or $337.50 per ECS student. Registration for busing of non-eligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee. Reminder: Bus passes will not be sent to schools, but must be picked up at the BRSD office.

Students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus.

• Bus Passes are sold as a year pass; no half-passes or winter passes will be sold.

• We now accept cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard and Debit.

The first day of busing for City of Camrose Public Schools will be Tuesday, September 2, 2014.

Health Minister takes tour of St. Mary’s Hospital

Alberta Health Minister Fred Horne toured the Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose facility and met with the foundation board to share information on July 25.

Minister Horne viewed the visit as an opportunity to see first hand one of the best rural hospitals in the province.

“This is largely an update meeting for me. It has been a while since I have been in Wetaskiwin and Camrose to see what is happening,” said Horne. “Today we are meeting with foundation boards from both Wetaskiwin and Camrose. At the end of the day we are going to look at the emergency department here at St. Mary’s. The first meeting was to look at the work the foundation has been doing.”

The St. Mary’s Foundation Board is planning for upgrades to the emergency room in the future.

“You look at examples such as the CT scanner and leading edge services that have been made possible by the foundation. The latest project of interest is the renovation or upgrade of the emergency department,” said the minister. “We had a discussion on what some of the needs are there. If you are looking for an example of leading edge health care in a smaller centre in Alberta, Camrose is an excellent place to look.”

scanner has opened more doors for the rural hospital.

“The techniques they use here for dealing with strokes are the same as they use at the University of Calgary, which is the centre of excellence in Canada for stroke care, so local people here are able to get that equivalent care without going to Edmonton or Calgary for another waiting list,” Horne said. “It is critical from a patient point of view. It eliminates travel and delays in care. It is important in centres like Camrose that people have access to those same facilities and equipment.”

The other thing that really impressed Horne was the hospital’s reach into the community.

“The stroke rehabilitation unit allows the staff to go into people’s homes,” said Horne. “In other parts of Canada, you would have to

travel for that kind of service, or in some cases temporarily live where that service is provided.”

Alberta Health Services and hospital boards work together to bring care to patients throughout the province.

“They have a close relationship, even though it has changed a bit since regionalizing in the mid-90s. It comes down to the sense of determining the priorities in the area. The foundations work together and people understand that it is a cluster of services that make up the health system. It is not provided at the hospital the same way it was done 30 or 40 years ago,” said Horne. “It comes down to setting priorities not just for the hospital, but the broader community.”

The two sides also establish priorities for the future.

“It is a constructive rela-

tionship,” said the minister.

“They (foundation boards) are vital to the health care system. The resources provided by foundation boards is critical. They are full partners in the health care system.”

Alan Heyhurst, chair of the St. Mary’s Foundation Board, saw the value of meeting with the minister.

“We take suggestions from our staff and bring them to the board. They have told us that renovations to the emergency department is top priority, so are passing that on to the minister. We take staff requests seriously.

To have staff come to us and talk with us. We rely on the health professionals in the system to tell us what is really needed. If they said it is needed in our community then we want to contribute to that.”

The foundation board wants to support projects

that benefit the community and the staff.

“We talk about infrastructure, health and care.

We have a partnership with operations, funding and the community too,” said Alan.

“We have one goal and that is patient care. When you get a combination of leadership and a staff that gets really involved it comes together.

We get a lot of input from staff. We don’t just go ‘I think that is a good idea.’ There is a lot of information coming through before a project even starts to get off the ground.

The CT scanner is an example of what can be done.”

The province doesn’t make all of the decisions.

“This is staff led and there is more to it than bricks and mortar. Patient flow and how it is designed actually determines how good, or not so good the experience is for the patient,” said Minister Horne.

Time is now for rural transportation system

It’s time to establish a public transportation system for all Albertans.

That was the message the Association for Life-wide Living of Alberta (ALL) shared with Alberta Transportation Strategic Policy Branch executive director Ross Danyluk in a meeting at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station July 17.

ALL wants to see the provincial government establish a rural transportation network that applies what has been learned about regional collaboration in the library and watershed system to develop creative, flexible solutions and strategies to accommodate the needs of rural Albertans.

“A rural regional transportation system needs to include scheduled route service and specific destination service,” said ALL president Jane Ross.

ALL vice-president Ted Wigglesworth told Danyluk that a bus system for rural Alberta is not possible without public assistance.

He added that a mindset has developed in Alberta where people believe that

they need to own a vehicle in order to get anywhere.

“The way it is now communities need to find their own solutions.”

Ross said a clear statement from the government would make a tremendous difference in helping rural transportation systems receive the funding they need.

“The government needs to demonstrate more engagement before local governments will release more transportation funding.

“Money and in-kind services won’t be released until there is an indication of government support.”

ALL told Danyluk that a Battle River Bus pilot project it initiated in the spring of 2012 with the support of the Bashaw Bus Society and Camrose County has broken down a number of barriers by providing regular public transportation between Bashaw, Camrose and several small communities along Highway 21.

The bus leaves Bashaw at 8:30 a.m. and leaves Camrose at 3 p.m. The cost of a round trip is $10. The ultimate vision of the Battle River Bus is to build out a system that will connect

the entire region using existing assets and have the ability to expand based on researchbased needs.

“We see this as a demonstration project,” said Ross. “We are committed to achieving rural transportation in this region.”

A recently completed survey showed that 83 per cent of the 800 Battle River Bus riders who were polled believe the service is needed and that 61 per cent would use the service in the future.

Fifty-seven per cent said they had no other means of transportation, while 71 per cent said they used it to get to appointments with doctors and lawyers. Everyone agreed that $10 was a fair price.

The survey also asked Battle River area residents to share their thoughts on public transportation.

Fran Elliott noted that people who do not drive feel like second class citizens.

A Camrose County resident said she was able to get to Edmonton by ambulance but wasn’t able to get back home again.

ALL also shared with Danyluk information it had gathered from Habitat for Humanity which indicated

that the lack of affordable transportation in Camrose is hard on low income residents, and from Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger, who indicated that one of the most important things is transportation between the Edmonton International Airport and Augustana, particularly at the start of the year.

The dean further mentioned that students need a way to get from Camrose to Edmonton and a shuttle service that makes various stops in the community.

ALL began to recognize the need for rural transportation as far back as November, 2004, when it started working with residents of the Battle River region to address the needs of communities. It wasn’t long until the need for transportation became a priority.

“There was lots of talk about the need for rural transportation but little being done in terms of unified service,” said Ross in an article written by Thom Yee. In 2010, ALL found there were at least 17 small buses and vans in the region but that many of them were under-utilized, in part due

to lack of education about service availability, who could use them and problems in overall coordination.

It determined that by connecting the existing rural assets, there could be significant potential for servicing the entire region.

“There was a lot of talk about what was needed but people were unsure about how to proceed,” said Ross.

ALL member Bob Silverthorne told Danyluk one of the crucial areas in which help is needed is the development of rules and regulations regarding transportation services.

“We need the government to help us bring in standards in regards to driver training, licencing and maintenance,” said Silverthorne.

“There are a whole balliwack of things that need to be developed.”

ALL noted that Alberta is different than other provinces in that the population is widely spread out. Members feel the government is promoting more what is happening in urban centres and not paying enough attention to the needs of rural communities.

Barricade controversy

As a resident of the area where the barricades have been set up to reduce the traffic flow on 49 and 50 Avenues I am compelled to respond to the negative comments that are being brought forward. Words like protest and outrage have been used, which are quite harsh and frankly surprising for a community like Camrose which traditionally has been known for being a friendly and caring city. Is this what we have come to over a minor inconvenience like a barricade that was put into place by our city council to provide a calm and safe environment for the residents of our area?

I feel the need to remind those who are outraged and protesting that the streets in question were designated local traffic only prior to the barricades and that with a vehicle count of 1,800 daily – I can’t imagine these were all local residents going to and from their homes – many were disregarding the signs or looking for a shortcut. These streets were never intended to be major arteries for traffic like Grand Drive and 48 Ave. For someone to suggest that “disgruntled” residents would spend their time repeatedly travel-

ling over a traffic counter to inflate numbers – please know I believe we have better things to do with our time such as enjoying our newfound quality of life in our neighbourhood.

Furthermore, to have someone imply a threat to the residents and encourage individuals to create a new shortcut through the area just to prove a point is both concerning and disappointing. Is there no longer any respect for your community or neighbours? We do realize that some extra time is involved for commuting – it does affect us as well, but I will take a minor inconvenience in order to have a safe secure neighbourhood where my kids now feel comfortable enjoying a walk, playing on the driveway and riding their bikes. This is Camrose, not a major city like Edmonton. There is no need to rush.

Leave a few minutes earlier to get where you need to go.

Contradictions are interesting. To encourage people to take extra measures and time to cut through the neighborhood yet complain that they waited 10 minutes to make a turn does not make sense to me.

I have resided in Camrose for a number of years and have never encountered an area of the city that was so traffic congested that I had to wait that length of time – exception being of course a train or BVJ perhaps.

So as residents of the affected community we simply request that everyone who is concerned please take a moment and remember that consideration and respect of everyone is what makes Camrose a great place to live. Take the time to slow down. Enjoy the city for what it offers and remem-

Over the years I have found great difficulty with the Main Street in Camrose.

There are many problems with snow removal or lack of it, from the curbs along the street. My most recent complaint is that there are no handicapped parking spaces by the crosswalks. My husband must use a walker and it is virtually impossible for a person alone to get a walker onto a sidewalk. Have you ever tried to push a walker on the brick work at the edges of the sidewalks? That is another challenge. Given the recent experiences my husband and I have had on main street, we will be finding alternate places to do business or try to access services. Main Street in Camrose must be about the most un-user friendly street in Alberta.

Rohan Manaloor was thinking it was going to be a pretty normal summer filled with sports activities and down time until he received a call from Alberta Innovates: Health Solutions in June telling him he had been selected to be part of this year’s Heritage Youth Summer Program.

“It’s way better than what I had been planning,” said Manaloor, who saw his brother go through the program a few years ago.

The AIHealth Solutions Heritage Youth Summer Program offers high school students who have completed Grade 11 and received a good reference from a teacher to participate in health-related scientific research labs at either the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary or the University of Lethbridge.

“It’s a chance for them to experience for the first time what it is like to work in a lab and talk to professors who are doing research,” said Caitrin Armstrong, program assistant for the HYRS Edmonton program.

“It gives them an idea of what they can expect when they start participating in labs in university. As a result they have the confidence to be able to talk with the professors.”

Manaloor is spending a good portion of his day conducting research at the U of A with Dr. John Seubert in the area of cardiovascular disease.

“We’re studying the cells of rats with heart injuries and comparing them to the cells of humans to see if we can find any similarities,” he said.

“I spend a lot of time looking through a microscope.”

Manaloor also has the chance to hear presentations from professors at the university on science-related topics and how they got started with their science careers, tour different parts of the U of A campus, socialize with other high school students from across the province who share the same interests as himself, and learn about the scholarships available to assist with the cost of education.

Manaloor wrote an essay as part of his HYRS application form in which he explained to the selection committee that he wants to study cardiology at the U of A after he completes his Grade 12 year in the spring of 2015.

“They (the committee) want to know what your interests are so if they choose you they can put you in the right area,” he said. “I was one of 200 students who made application to get into the program and am one of 22 students who were accepted at the U of A.” AIHealth Solutions has been operating the HYRS program for the last fifteen years.

“We provide opportunities that support the training of future leaders in the health research and innovation environment, so that they can gain broad experience that will help them succeed in launching careers in academic, industry, government and elsewhere,” states the AIHealth Solutions website. “Our investment in the training of highly skilled people supports the development of a high-quality workforce that will lead the transformation of health and well-being through research and innovation.”

Armstrong noted while students are the ones who tend to benefit the most from HYSP it is also good for the researchers.

“Many of the researchers like Dr. Seubert have commented on how nice it is to get feedback from the students on what they are doing. They lose track sometimes of how innovative and neat and amazing their research is.”

A key responsibility of the HYRS student is to return to their high school in the fall and do a presentation to a Grade 11 science class on his or her experiences in the program.

Clarification

The July 29 Camrose Booster article, “Contingency enough to complete city hall” gave the wrong impression when it stated that the City of Camrose was able to achieve cost savings on the city hall by removing the elevator and doing away with the audio visual tender. Measures will streamline firearms licencing says Sorenson Kevin Sorenson, Minister of State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, welcomed the coming-intoforce of an expanded Order Declaring an Amnesty Period (2014).

This Order will ensure that law-abiding owners of CZ 858 or Swiss Arms family of rifles are now able to fully use their property, announced Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety

and Emergency Preparedness. When Parliament reconvenes in September, the Conservative Government will also table the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. The Bill will: merge the Possession Only License (POL) and the Possession and Acquisition License (PAL); restrict the ability of Chief Firearms Officers to make arbitrary decisions; create a grace period

at the end of the five-year licence to stop people from immediately becoming criminalized for paperwork errors; end needless paperwork around Authorizations to Transport by making them a condition of a license; require mandatory firearms safety courses for first-time gun owners; and strengthen firearms prohibitions for those who are convicted of domestic violence offences.

The amnesty for lawabiding owners of the CZ 858 or Swiss Arms family of rifles will expire on March 14, 2016.

The Order Declaring an Amnesty Period (2014) will allow owners of the impacted firearms to use their property. Intended amendments to the Firearms Act and Criminal Code would streamline licensing and eliminate red

tape for law-abiding firearms owners.

“These measures would streamline licensing and eliminate needless red tape for law-abiding gun owners.

It would also take steps to ensure that those convicted of domestic violence offences can be banned from owning firearms. Our government will continue to help keep the public safe, through common sense policies,” said Minister Sorenson.

Habitat presents keys to two new homes

“This is an amazing feeling,” said Mackenzie following a home dedication program at the home site (5202 and 5204-41 Street, Camrose). “It means so much. It means our family has stability and we don’t have to move again.”

Ken said the Habitatbuilt home represents a new beginning.

“It is ours. We are not throwing our money away anymore. It (their money) is working towards something.”

The two sides of a duplex are the 25th and 26th homes Habitat has built in Camrose as part of its mission to engage volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promote home ownership as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty.

“We had great support from local businesses and building trades,” said Habitat for Humanity Camrose executive director Cody McCarroll. “We also had countless volunteer hours supplied as well as individual donations.”

McCarroll said 80 new volunteers who have never worked with Habitat before were on this year’s build site.

“Many of them were corporate teams, so people coming in, donating a day of their time.”

Habitat for Humanity Camrose selects its partner families based on three criteria: need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay for the homes; and a willingness to partner.

“When we go to visit (the families) we look for unsafe unhealthy conditions, rent too high, overcrowding and the inability to pay for a conventional mortgage,” said Habitat family services committee member Leona Calhoun, adding that the homes are sold to the partner families at 100 per cent market value with no interest.

Habitat partner families must do 500 hours of sweat equity or volunteer labour as a form of down payment before they can move in.

build, they can volunteer at ReStore or they can volunteer at non profits, like churches,” said Calhoun. “If it is a couple family they each have to do 200 hours and then friends and families can help with 100. If they are single with children they do 200 and 300 can be done by friends and family.”

Homes must remain Habitat homes for twenty years.

“At any time if they want to move Habitat has the first right of refusal,” said Calhoun. “Then an appraisal is done and the family will get back its share of the investment. We have a particular format that is used.”

Westaskiwin-Camrose MLA Verlyn Olson noted that the work Habitat does is a wonderful example of building community.

He congratulated everyone who was involved in the build, from sponsors, suppliers and volunteers to the Habitat for Humanity organization.

“I turn on the news fairly often and you see people being driven from their homes or losing their homes and trying to get their children to a safe place, and it is heart wrenching to watch, but it really does make us all realize what a treasure it is to have a safe and a secure home,” said Olson. “I am sure nobody understands that better than the families that are going to be moving into these homes. It just makes one feel really warm and happy to know that we have a community that steps up and is willing to give of itself to build this.”

Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer said the assistance the City of Camrose provided to the Habitat build is on behalf of all the city’s residents.

Mayer also wished the families many years of happiness and enjoyment in their new homes.

“Hopefully this is the first day of the rest of your life in a new home that you can thoroughly enjoy,” he said.

ReStore manager Ed Turner, who gave the prayer of dedication, quoted the scripture “Unless the Lord builds the house those who build it labour in vain.”

“Many people have put work into these homes but it is God’s provision and God’s protection and God’s blessing that makes it all possible,” said Turner.

Courtney said that she and Ken realized that by renting they were just wasting money.

“We rented for four years.

“With this when we put money into the home it is actually going towards something.”

Mackenzie said her family has been looking to moving into the new home for a long time.

“We need something to call our own and not have to worry about moving because we make too much or too little or anything like that.”

Mackenzie said the family plans to continue to work with Habitat Camrose even after completing its volunteer hours.

“We are still looking and doing more volunteering with them and just helping them out whenever we can, especially next year with the new build. Why not? You know, give back to them like they gave to us.”

Canada’s natural berry: the goodness of the saskatoon

A saskatoon pie contest will be held at the Camrose Farmers’ Market this Saturday.

A local watershed group is doing its part to promote the delights of saskatoon berries with the fifth annual Saskatoon Pie Contest. The Battle River Watershed Alliance is a local environmental organization that works to promote the health of the

Battle River and its surrounding landscape. It has hosted this contest for the past four years, and it has been a huge hit for community members every year.

This year the pie contest will be held at the Camrose Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Aug. 9. Bakers can submit a pie between 9 and

10 a.m. for a chance to win either the judge’s prize or the people’s choice award.

Everyone is invited to come out at 11 a.m. to experience the goodness of the saskatoon for themselves.

“We love promoting the saskatoon because people associate it with this area. Our hope is that by putting on this contest, we encourage people to get out in their watershed, pick the berries and develop a closer connection to the land. You can’t care for a place that you don’t love. And who doesn’t love saskatoons?”

If you grew up in the prairies you likely have memories of heading out to the bush for an afternoon of saskatoon berry picking. Ice cream pails in hand, you’d wander out in your long sleeve shirts and pants, searching for the smooth, purple grapelike clusters and promptly popping a few handfuls in your mouth once you found them. Saskatoons are one of the little-known treasures in this region, better known in rural areas since they are predominantly uncultivated and not sold on a large scale. Many people have never had the pleasure of tasting its wild goodness, or staining their hands and mouth with its sweet juices. But it is a berry with deep historic roots, whose delights have been experienced through the generations.

In 1810, explorer David

Thompson wrote in his journal: “The berry grows abundantly on willow-like shrubs, is of the colour of deep blue, or black; the size of a full-grown pea, very sweet and nourishing, the favorite food of small birds, and the bears. They are very wholesome, and may safely be eaten as long as the appetite continues. The wood is of a fine size for arrows, and where this can be got, no other is employed; it is weighty, pliant, and non-elastic. As this berry is proceeded by a beautiful flower, and the berry is rich as a currant from Smyrna and keeps as well, it ought to be cultivated in Canada, and in England.”

Saskatoons are not only delicious; they are also very good for you.

Native Americans used the bush (which they called ‘Mis-sask-qua-too-mina’) for making pemmican as well as for medicinal purposes. They are extremely high in antioxidants and are also a great source of calcium, iron, and manganese. And they make a darn good pie!

“We’re challenging people to make a roadside sculpture of bales – round or square, large or small – that can be seen by the Prairie Fun Days route Aug. 23 and 24,” said Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park coordinator Nadine Matheson.

“They will be able to incorporate any kind of materials in their bales to make them interesting.

Entries in 2013 included a display featuring a pair of canoeists at Hay Lakes, a Groovy Hippy Hay Angel, and the old woman who lived in a shoe at the Meeting Creek Railway Station.

“There were a lot of positive comments about the creativity that was shown,” said Matheson.

Havin’ a Hay Day Contest winners will be determined by the number of votes that are cast at each of the Prairie Fun Days stops.

First prize is a $300 gift certificate from the sponsor, Peavey Mart.

The idea for the Prairie Fun Days Havin’ a Hay Day Contest came from the State of Montana.

“They have a huge one there every year,” said Havin’ a Hay Day Contest organizer Barb McDonald. “From what I hear it has become very popular.”

CAFCL re-districting tabled to tonight’s council meeting

Camrose City council has tabled until Aug. 5 a motion to give second reading to a bylaw that would re-district the greenspace behind the Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) from Park to Institutional.

“I would prefer not to make a decision just yet,” said councillor Kevin Hycha after council had a long discussion on the subject July 21. “We need to explore the different options that are available.”

CAFCL applied for the re-districting earlier this

year in order to build a 2,008 square foot barrierfree residence for residents leaving Michener Centre in Red Deer.

“We have received a grant of $330,000 from the government but we have to have it completed by March of 2015,” said CAFCL CEO Esther McDonald.

The proposed redistricting is being opposed by neighbouring residents who want the zoning to stay just the way it is.

Eleanor White, who lives at 11 Montclare Avenue, told council in a public hearing on the redistricting

that she and her husband purchased their property in 2007 because of the greenspace and mature trees behind their laneway.

“We were willing to pay a higher price for our modest bungalow to get this location.”

White said the greenspace in question was bigger than it was in the early 1960s.

“History tells me that Mr. Burgess bought some of that land and established his institution on it, which has now been taken over by the Association.

“They want to purchase

the rest of the greenspace behind the institution.”

White explained that when she thinks of the greenspace she thinks of the quality of life it brings to myself and others in the area.

“I am a conversationalist and I say leave it as it is,” she said. “If you read the letters that were written by the residents in our neighbourhood you will see that some of the words that are stated are that we appreciate the privilege of the proximity to the greenspace. We value the greenspace in our neighbourhood. This is a very appealing area of Camrose.”

White disagreed with the statements that have been made that the parks area is not well used.

“This summer and in previous summers there have always been gaggles of children playing in the area.”

CAFCL director Dave Kotyk told council that the Association that rather than pushing for a particular project or money the Association is looking at the proposed residence in terms of something that is needed for the community in the future.

Trumpeter swans safe Collaborative efforts have resulted in trumpeter swans being removed from Alberta’s threatened species list.

The trumpeter swan is now identified as a species of special concern. This means, while still vulnerable, it is not immediately in danger.

“I’m pleased the trumpeter swan can now be removed from the threatened species list,” said Robin Campbell, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. “This success is a testament to the hard work, careful planning and commitment of Albertans to preserve our province’s biodiversity.”

The County of Grande Prairie – home to a large, natural breeding ground for trumpeter swans – worked to ensure guidelines and land-use plans were followed to protect trumpeter swans and their nesting areas.

“We are thrilled to have assisted in helping this beautiful species rebound back to a rich and healthy population,” said Leanne Beaupre, reeve of County of Grande Prairie.

The changes to the at-risk species list are the result of science-based recommendations brought forward by Alberta’s Endangered Species Conservation Committee and its Scientific Subcommittee. As part of this work, four additional species were added to the threatened species list due to declining or small populations. These species are: Athabasca rainbow trout; bull trout, pygmy whitefish and western grebe.

“By recognizing that these species need special attention, we can take the necessary steps to ensure they remain a part of Alberta’s landscapes for many years to come,” said Ken Lemke, MLA for Stony Plain.

“What we are looking at this space for is to be able to deal with a particular need that we see in the community that we service,” said Kotyk. “We do have an abundance of greenspace (in Camrose) and a lack of space with which to deal with the severely handicapped.”

City councillor Max Lindstrand applauded the work that CAFCL is doing but questioned whether the residence being proposed could be

moved to a different part of the greenspace.

He said it might be more acceptable if it was in a different part of the triangle.

White expressed concern as to what the street address of the residence would be if it was allowed to go ahead, since the front door opens onto the parking lot.

She added that if it was built handivans would be using the lane.

McDonald noted that as the individuals from

Michener pass away the spaces in the residence would be made available to community members.

She added that CAFCL is trying to make the home blend into the neighbourhood as best it can so it doesn’t stick out as an institution.

Councillor Wayne Throndson questioned whether there is other land in the city that is available for such a residence.

“I have sympathy for the residents of neigh-

bourhood that surrounds the park area because of the greenspace,” he said.

“If this happened in our own back yards we would all be up in arms.

“I want to be able to support the association but I don’t think I can.”

Councillor Lindstrand questioned whether CAFCL would be able to access some of the land that will be available when the Stoney Creek Lodge property becomes available.

“There is a lot of land

there and that might be one conversation to have with Denis Beesley from The Bethany Group,” he said.

Councillors agreed they needed more time to consider all the options, whether they be moving the proposed residence to another part of the property or finding a different area altogether.

“I understand the timelines with Michener but I can’t make a decision tonight,” said councillor Hoveland.

The Ryley Rebels are the first team to qualify for the Powerline Baseball League final series.

Ryley swept the best of three semifinals with 4-2 and 5-1 victories. The Rebels defeated the Leduc Milleteers in the short series on July 29.

In the first game Corey Epp picked up the win on the mound and Tom Shulba recorded the save. Shawn Pilgaard earned the win with Shulba again finishing the game.

The Armena Royals and Holden Blue Jays split the first two games to force a third game. Holden won the first game 3-1 and Armena fought back with an 8-3 victory in the second match on July 29.

The Royals scored four runs in the second inning to break the second game wide open. Pitcher Lyndon Galvin earned the win on the mound. The first game had a pitching duel between Logan Skori of the Blue Jays and Ian Sherbaniuk of the Royals.

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler completely redefines the premium SUV, delivering an unprecedented combination of best-in-class fuel economy and driving range, available cleandiesel technology, a choice of leading powertrain options, legendary benchmark capability, world-class craftsmanship, premium on-road driving dynamics, and a host of advanced user-friendly technology and safety features.

“The industry’s most highly acclaimed SUV has been elevated to an even higher level,” said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Noel Skoglund. “Our customers will clearly find the new Jeep Grand Cherokee to be even more of a pleasure to drive – on any and all roads, on the most demanding trails, and in all weather conditions.

Jeep Grand Cherokee’s 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V-6 engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque while using just 11.2 litres per 100 km in the city and just 7.84 litres per 100 km on the highway. The engine’s block and bed plate is crafted from strong compacted graphite iron, which contributes to stiffness without penalizing performance.

Grand Cherokee’s standard 3.6 litre Pentastar V-6

uses just 9.41 litres per 100 km on the highway, a nine per cent jump from the previous model year. The engine generates 291 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Structural, intake and exhaust areas are designed to deliver low levels of overall noise and achieve specific sound quality goals that meet discerning customer requirements.

The 5.7 litre V-8 produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque, and boasts a towing capacity of 7,400 lbs.

VVT technology improves fuel economy in two ways: first it reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later. Second, it increases the expansion process of the combustion event.

This allows more work to be transferred to the crankshaft instead of being rejected out of the exhaust port as heat. VVT improves engine breathing, which further improves engine efficiency and power.

The 5.7-litre engine’s Fuel Saver Technology with cylinder de-activation seamlessly alternates between smooth, high-fuel-economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed, and V-8 mode when more power is in demand.

All three Jeep Grand Cherokee engines are now attached to Chrysler Group’s

new eight-speed automatic transmission, which provides better fuel economy, quicker acceleration and smoother shifting. Fully electronic, the eight-speed automatic features on-the-fly shift map changing, with manual shifting capability and Electronic Range Select using steeringwheel paddle controls. More than 40 individual shift maps for specific conditions optimize shift quality and shift points for fuel economy, performance and drivability.

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee features three available 4x4 systems.

Quadra-Trac I delivers fulltime four-wheel drive without any switches or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation of the vehicle over a variety of road conditions. This light-weight singlespeed case is both proven and efficient for enhanced fuel economy. Quadrac-Trac II’s two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and takes corrective action. The system also uses throttle anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before tire slippage occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100 per cent of available torque is instantly routed to

the axle with the most traction. Quadra-Drive II with a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD) delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction.

In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee rises above the road and rocks with the rugged Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Life system features five height settings for optimum ride performance.

Grand Cherokee’s classleading Selec-Terrain traction control system allows customers to choose the on- and off-road settings for optimum performance. Local athletes shine

Approximately 2,600 athletes and coaches from across the province competed in 15 different sports at the 2014 Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie, July 24 to 27.

Chad Sieben sure loves his silver collection.

The Camrose swimmer garnered six silver medals at the Games in the pool.

He placed second in the 200m backstroke in 2:31.73, 50m backstroke in 31.41, 100m freestyle in 59.51, 100m backstroke in 1:08.70, 200m freestyle in 2.12.61 and in the boys 14-15 age 4 x 50 medley relay in 2:05.11. He also came in fourth in the 50m freestyle event with a time of 28.08.

Tim MacKay of Camrose set a record in the U15 high jump with a 1.85m height to earn a gold medal. He also earned a bronze medal in the long jump event with a 5.28m distance and came in fifth in the boys’ relay event in 4:24.87.

Scott Kohlman picked up a gold and bronze medal in Airdrie. He won the U17 1,500m run with a time of 4:22.56. In the longer event, he placed third in the 3,000m in 9:38.64.

He also placed sixth in the 800m in 2:09.33 and medley relay event in 4:08.51.

Brennan Waldron of Bashaw was on the silver-winning lacrosse team.

Josh Watson of Rosalind and Griffin Lorenz of Camrose came home with bronze medals as the Zone 4 team finished in third place.

The baseball team just missed the medal round and ended up in fourth place. Devin Heck and Kyler Charchun of Camrose were on the team.

In girls’ soccer, Ebony Falk and Hailey McKechnie of Camrose, and Hope Maron of Bittern Lake helped the central zone place fifth.

On the boys’ side, Owen MacPherson and Winston Ross of Camrose also came in fifth place in soccer.

Taylor Schultz of Camrose and Halley Hay of Bawlf were on the female basketball club that placed sixth.

William Mcdonald of Bashaw and Jayden Neuman of Ryley were on the seventh place football squad.

MacKay seeks personal best at nationals

Tim MacKay of Camrose nailed another personal best height in high jump at the Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie July 24 to 27.

He set a Games record in the U15 high jump with a 1.85m leap to earn a gold medal. That mark also eclipsed the heights the U16 boys were reaching. MacKay earned a bronze medal in the long jump event with a 5.28m distance and came in fifth in the boys’ relay event with a time of 4:24.87.

The junior high student was using the track and field event as a stepping stone for the nationals in Langley, B.C. Aug. 15 and 16, but soon found out the competition was tougher than he faced at westerns.

“I met a lot of people at the Games, not just in track, but in other sports as well. It was a lot of fun,” said MacKay. “I received a bronze in long jump. It was a cold and windy day, so it wasn’t my best. Even the first place guy didn’t do that well, compared to levels we normally can jump at. Not the best day.”

Both the weather and MacKay improved the next day when high jumping began.

“I was able to hit my personal best at 1.85m to come out first there. Two people tied for second at 1.80m, so it

was good competition for me in front of a big crowd,” said MacKay, who had previously set his goal at jumping 1.80m earlier in the year. “I met one of the guys at the first track of the season in our zone, where he struggled. It was nice to see him come back and have a good day.”

Now that MacKay hit the magic mark he had his sights on, he wants to equal

or improve on that at nationals.

“I feel really good now.

I’m getting high enough to clear that height now and it has been a steady progression. I set goals in each meet and it has been working for me,” he added. “When I cleared 1.85m I knew that I just put myself at number one in Canada for my age.

I tried 1.90m, but I had the

adrenaline going and was tired of jumping at the same time. When I jumped I was surprised that I was very close. The bar was higher than me, so it was a whole new experience. I really think it is a possible goal over the next two weeks.”

The high jumper will be training and maintaining his routine until nationals arrive.

“I’m actually taking a couple days off to before going back in training to give my body and mind a rest,” said MacKay. At westerns, he also set his personal best, even though he wasn’t pushed as hard.

“It wasn’t as competitive as I thought it might be.

Yes, it had three provinces represented, but the stronger jumpers are from Alberta anyway. At westerns only one other guy jumped 1.80m, but at the Summer Games there were two others,” explained MacKay, who picked up the gold medal.

McKay said it is hard to tell what will happen at nationals.

“I’ve never gone before.

The second best jumper has hit 1.84, so I expect tough competition.

McKay will be representing Athletics Alberta in track and field at the Athletics Canada Legion National Championships.

Sea Serpents happy with their results

Camrose Sea Serpents Chad Sieben and Kristen Pylypow claimed their spots in the province’s swimming hierarchy at the Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie July 24 to 27.

Chad Sieben won silver medals in the 200m backstroke, the 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 14-15 age 4x50 medley relay.

He also placed fourth in the 50m freestyle.

Pylypow won gold in the 50m free, silver in the 100m free and bronze in a relay.

She also competed in the 50m back, 100m back, 50m fly and 400m free.

The only thing that would have pleased Sieben more about his performances was if the silver medals had been gold.

“I am pretty happy with my results,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting going in that I would get six silvers.”

Sieben was especially pleased with his performance in the 100m free.’

“All the races were memorable but the 100m free was the one that stood out the most,” he said. “I had never broken a minute in the race and I swam it at 59.51.”

Sieben’s results were made even more remarkable by the fact that he was competing against winter club swimmers who had posted

times good enough to get into nationals.

“In the past winter club athletes with ‘A’ times weren’t allowed to go to the Alberta Summer Games,” said Sieben. “That rule has been changed and now they are.”

Camrose Sea Serpents coach Shane Gau said Sieben’s accomplishments at the Summer Games simply added to what has already been an incredibly successful season.

“He is at the bottom of his age group (age fifteen in the 15-17 category) but that hasn’t hurt him at all.

“To be able to medal six

times at the Summer Games is amazing.”

Pylypow posted a time of 29.25 in the 50m free, breaking her previous best time of 29.25.

“Very few girls at the age of 15 ever swim below 30 seconds in the 50m free,” said Gau. “If they ever get below 30 seconds they are a very elite swimmer.”

Pylypow wasn’t sure what to expect before the start of provincials, even though she had competed in the 2012 provincials when they were held in Lethbridge.

“Going in I wasn’t ranked to medal; I wasn’t in the top three in my age group,” she

said. “I knew it was going to be a tough competition because I was going up against swimmers from the winter club.”

Typically, summer club swimmers like the Camrose Sea Serpents have a harder time qualifying for provincials than swimmers from winter clubs.

“The tryouts for the Games are usually at the start of the summer season (in May) and just at the end of the winter club season,” said Gau. “The winter club swimmers are at their peak and we are just beginning.

It’s too bad that the seasons don’t align a little bit better because I think that we would have some other kids from Camrose make it to Summer Games if they could have used the times they are posting now.”

Gau said that Kristen’s conditioning is a lot better now than it was at the start of the season.

“At the Summer Games she went from out of medal position to medalling in two of her events and improving in all the rest.”

Sieben started swimming at Killam when he was just four years of age. He has been with the Camrose Sea Serpents for the last eight years.

“He is one of the club’s leaders and hardest workers,” said Gau. Continued on page 32

Local teams enter baseball provincials

By Murray Green The Coronation Royals midget team captured the double-A Tier 3 provincials with a 9-8 victory over Red Deer in Barrhead on July 27.

Red Deer knocked off Bawlf 12-10 in the semifinals and Coronation beat the host squad. Bawlf beat South Jasper Place 6-4 in the consolation final to place third overall. Bawlf also doubled Coronation 8-4 and lost 9-2 to South Jasper

Place earlier in the provincials.

The bantam double-A Royals, coached by Daryl Zimmer, were in Stettler for the Tier 1 provincials Aug. 1 to 3.

The Jody Watson coached bantam Reds lost 5-4 to Olds in the consolation match. Camrose lost 10-6 to Sherwood Park and dropped a close 4-3 contest to St. Paul to miss the playoff round at provincials in Olds July 18 to 20.

The Heisler Cardinals

claimed the provincial title by defeating Lacombe 11-3 in the final match of the Tier 4 tournament in Elk Point on July 20. The Cardinals also beat Stony Plain, Elk Point and the same Lacombe team in the first round.

The peewee club is led by coach Bob Charchun.

Camrose was in the Tier 1 provincials in Grande Prairie Aug. 1 to 3.

The Heisler Cardinals were in the Tier 3 provincials in St. Albert July

25 to 27. No results were known at press time.

The mosquito Royals are coached by Ryan Popowich. They went to provincials in Okotoks Aug. 1 to 3.

The mosquito Reds are coached by Brian Hoglund.

They lost the final 18-8 to Stony Plain to earn silver medals. Camrose beat the Edmonton Angels 12-2, lost to Strathmore 14-2 and outscored Strathmore 24-20 in the semifinal to reach the medal game.

Single-A The Round Hill Eagles bantam team went to Beaumont for provincials July 25 to 27. No results are available.

In mosquito play, Sedgewick lost 16-9 to Slave Lake in the semifinals of the Tier 1 provincials in Olds. In round robin play they lost to the champion squad from Olds 9-4, won 20-15 over Beaumont and lost 15-14 to Devon.

This is the first year with the Camrose Sea Serpents for Pylypow, who made the decision to come over from Provost to avail herself of the greater experience of the coaches.

“I have stayed with the Gau’s quite a bit this summer but we also do quite a bit of driving,” said Pylypow.

Gau is impressed by the dedication to swimming that has been shown by Pylypow and her family.

“It is a huge commitment for the family to drive from and to Provost every day, sometimes twice a day,” he said. “It is that dedication that allows her the opportunity to push a little bit harder in achieving her goals.”

Sieben and Pylypow will be strong forces with which to contend at the regional competition at the Kinsmen Pool in Edmonton this weekend and the provincial competition at the same pool the week after.

“I just want to go in and do the best I can,” said Sieben.

“I am at the bottom of my age group so there isn’t really any pressure.”

Pylypow’s goal is to place in the top three provincials in both the 50m free and the 100m free.

“I think I have a good chance of doing that,” she said.

“Right now I am ranked in the top five in these two events.”

Axemen win two high scoring games

The Camrose Axemen continue to battle for second place in the North Central Alberta Baseball League (NCABL) as the season heads into the final two weeks.

Camrose beat the Edmonton Indians 8-5 at Harry Andreassen Field at Kin Park on July 29.

Brett Harke and Chance Wheatley led the Axemen

offence with two hits each as the team scored six runs in the third inning. Both of Harke’s hits were home runs as he collected three RBI’s on the night.

Joe Pasychynk pitched six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out four Edmonton batters. Ryan Mehler tossed the last inning to record the save.

Camrose defeated the

Sturgeon Paladins 11-7 in a wild contest, July 28. The Axemen scored five runs in the first inning and two more in the second. However, Sturgeon replied with two in the first and five in the fourth to erase that early lead. The difference in the game was the fifth inning, in which Camrose scored three more runs before shutting down the show horses. Sturgeon chalked

up five errors, which led to their downfall.

Four hitters paced the Axemen attack with two hits each: Steve Enright, Paul Ofrim, Ryan Petryshyn and Kris Kushnerick.

Camrose used four pitchers with Bryan Toles recording the win and Kyle Muzechka picking up the save. Craig Koughan and Corey Epp also made the trip to the hill for the Axemen.

Currently, the Axemen are in second place with a 13-5 record with two more games to play. The Edmonton Blackhawks are in first place.

The Axemen travel to St. Albert on Aug. 5 for a match against the Cardinals. Camrose also has two games to make-up with the Sturgeon Paladins and Edmonton Indians.

Jayla Kucy captured the Pacific Northwest area event of the Drive, Chip and Putt golf competition in Dupont, Washington, to qualify for the regional competition on Aug. 17.

About 120 junior golfers competed at the The Home Course as part of local qualifying for the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship. The top three scorers in each division advanced to the subregional qualifying at the golf club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey, Washington. From the subregional, competitors will advance to the regional and eventually to the national championship on April 5, 2015, at Augusta National Golf Club.

Jayla scored 102 points in the girls’ seven to nine age category and finished first with the next closest girl collecting 86 points. The Camrose nineyear-old hit three drives of 148, 133 and 145 yards to win the driving event.

“She did fantastic in putting (first) and chipping (second). I think she had the second overall high girl score from all girls aged seven to 11,” said proud dad Joe Kucy.

Jayla is one step closer to earning a trip to Augusta. Her two older brothers were close to advancing as well.

Devin scored 124 points to finish fifth overall out of 35 boys competing. The top three advance and Devin was 10 points away from the cut.

“It was roughly leaving his putt short by 12 inches and that would have been enough,” said Joe. “It was very close but he improved on his score from last year. Devin had to play up a class and played in the 12- and 13-year-old class even though he is 11, so he was the youngest in his group.”

He was tied for second in the chipping event.

Mason scored 133 points and also finished fifth overall out of 25 boys competing to miss the cut by three points.

“He needed a cleaner first drive and that would have done it for him. It was a huge improvement for him and he doubled his point total from last year. At any other location he would have made the cut, but this was the last site and the most competitive,” added Joe. Mason also had to play up a class and played in the 14- to 15-year-old class even though he is 13. He was the youngest in his group, but still was second in chipping and third in putting.

“It looks good for next year for the boys,” concluded Joe. The event was held at The Home Course near Seattle.

Jayla and Devin were in the U.S. Kids Worlds event in Pinehurst, North Carolina, July 31 and Aug. 1.

Camrose Sea Serpents dominated the pool at their “home” swim meet in Wetaskiwin July 26.

The local swim club’s final score of 877 was 374 greater than the 503 posted by the next closest club, Edmonton Huma, which sits third in the Alberta Summer Swimming Association’s overall standings.

“I think that is the most dominant we have ever been at our own swim meet,” said Camrose Sea Serpents coach Shane Gau. “We took a big chunk of swimmers and they all did incredibly well.”

In six and under, Alexandre Thain and Dexter Sharp won bronze medals, while Nate Ashton won a silver.

In eight and under, Bradley Rodin won a bronze medal.

In the nine and 10 category, Olivia Petersen and Kotaro Okada won bronze medals and Ainsley Burnett a gold.

In the 11 and 12 age category, Casara Holm and Callum Gau won gold medals, while Bennett Rolston won silver.

In the 13 and 14 category, Carter Rolston won silver.

In the 15 to 17 category, Kyle Sieben and Camryn Gau won silver medals and Kaylee Pylypow won gold.

In the 18 and over category, Mia Marcin won gold while Miranda Nash and Brenden Hilgartner took home silver.

The score would have been higher for the Sea Serpents if it had included the results of the senior swimmers and the two members of the club – Chad Sieben and Kristen Pylypow, who were attending the Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie.

The only disappointment for the Sea Serpents was not being able to hold the meet at the aquatic centre in Camrose.

“Our pool depth doesn’t meet regulations so we are not allowed to dive in off the side with the blocks,” said Gau. “Until we get that rectified we can’t have meets in our own pool.”

Camrose Sea Serpents president Brenda Holm served as the meet manager.

“She did an outstanding job making sure that everything was well organized,” said Gau. “All the different crews did a good job getting things going.”

The success of the “home” meet firmly established the Camrose Sea Serpents in fourth place in the Alberta Summer Swim Association standings with 314 points.

Former Trojan transforms into an X-Men

Former Camrose Composite High School Trojan football player Adam Kuntz is now a member of the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men team.

X-Men football head coach Gary Waterman welcomed linebacker Kuntz to Antigonish, Nova Scotia and the university on a recent trip to the Maritimes. Kuntz was also recruited by the U of A, Acadia and Saint Mary’s universities before he agreed to join the X-Men. “It was a huge decision.

When you see the scenery, the university, field and town, it immediately grabs you. The people are so supportive of the university and football. The town itself has about 7,000 people, but they average 12,000 for football games. The whole town shuts down for football. They love their football and that was part of the decision,” said Kuntz.

The U of A offer just wasn’t enough for Kuntz, even though he would have been playing with former Camrose teammates Tylor Henry and Colton Cardinal.

“The hardest part is letting go of your buddies,” he explained. “It wasn’t a guaranteed starting position, whereas out there (St. Francis Xavier University) I’m the guy they want to go with. They offered me a full maximum athletic scholarship without even negotiating. That was the selling point because I only have so many years (three) before my draft year. I want playing time to make a name for myself.”

The Nova Scotia university is committed to being a football powerhouse in Canada. They will start the season ranked 11th in Canada, but will likely move up once the season starts.

Coach Watermen confirmed that with a second wave of commitments to the football program for the 2014 season, which included 23 athletes.

“This second announcement of recruits (which included Kuntz) adds to

what we feel is an outstanding recruiting class,” said Coach Waterman. “Each of these individuals represents the type of student-athletes that we want associated with our program. I am excited to watch them grow and mature together as a group over the next several years.”

The 5’11”, 235 lb. Kuntz played three years of junior football with the Edmonton Huskies before making the jump to university.

The linebacker took a year of business at NAIT while playing junior. This scholarship allows Kuntz to complete his four-year business management and leadership degree and leaves an option for an additional year of studies and football if he so chooses.

“My goal is to get a degree and put myself in a position to play in the Canadian Football League. My dream has always been to play in the CFL and this scholarship helps me on my journey,” said Kuntz.

Four former CCHS Trojans have gone on to university football (Thomas Hilderman went to the University of Saskatchewan).

“It shows that it is tough to reach the CIS in football, but it also shows how good the minor football and the high school programs are,” said Kuntz. “It is making a mark for Camrose football.

It is hard to split from them, but now I get to make my own mark.”

The parade from St. Francis Xavier University to the CFL is a long one. Currently, six former X-Men are on rosters.

Recently drafted wide receiver Devon Bailey is on the active roster of the Edmonton Eskimos, as is fellow receiver Akeem Foster and linebacker Corbin Sharun. Cornerback Raye Hartmann, also a recent draft pick, is on the practice roster for the Eskimos, while linebacker Jonathan Hood is on the Toronto Argos and offensive lineman Steve Myddelton is on the roster of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Both Devon Bailey and Raye Hartmann were drafted in the CFL Draft this past May to the Eskimos. Bailey was selected sixth overall in the first round while Hartmann went 30th overall in the fourth round.

Cauchy Muamba, another former X-Men, was originally drafted in 2010 by BC, 34th overall. He spent three seasons with the Lions before playing in Winnipeg last year. The Bombers released him this past spring and he is now a free agent.

A second Muamba also has CFL and NFL ties.

Former 2011 first overall draft pick Henoc Muamba (brother to Cauchy) played three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, before being allowed to pursue NFL options with the Indianapolis Colts.

“I train four hours a day for four days, so 16 hours a week before the season starts. It is a sacrifice now; I don’t get to the lake, but it will be worth it in the end,” he added. “The big picture is to get a career in place

whether that is an education, or a chance to play in the CFL.” Kuntz received defensive player of the year for the Huskies last fall, along with 73 total tackles to finish first in the Prairie Football Conference division for total points for defensive players and finish first in Canada for tackles in the Canadian Junior Football League.

He was player of the week in Week 9 and the following is what the league had to say: “The Edmonton Huskies punched their ticket to the post season on Thanksgiving weekend after beating the Winnipeg Rifles in the season finale.

The Huskies defense held the Rifles to 29 points, led by the PFC Defensive Player of the Week, linebacker Adam Kuntz. The conference leading tackler added to his season totals with 10 solo tackles and two assists.”

The Huskies had a good season last year, but could be even better this year.

“I feel good that I left them in good hands,” said

Kuntz. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they win the league this year. Playing for the Huskies was a good transition for me. You need the game reps to improve. It was the best decision I ever made.”

The X-Men will open training camp in late August with their first Atlantic University Sport (AUS) regular season game scheduled for Sept. 5 at Saint Mary’s. The first home game is on Sept.

Mentorship program launched to support children More kids will benefit from caring adults with the launch of a recruitment campaign to help find a mentor for every child and youth in care in Alberta.

The #8000mentors campaign will attract more mentors, particularly from Aboriginal and ethno-cultural communities, who can share important cultural experiences and community connections with young people of similar backgrounds. #8000mentors will include print, radio and social media messages to create awareness of the need for mentors.

“Many children come in to our care without role

models in their lives,” said Manmeet S. Bhullar, Minister of Human Services. “Having just one positive, constant influence can mean the difference between a pathway of hope over a path of despair. By spending even an hour a week, you can be a hero to a child in need and change their life.”

In addition, $365,000 is provided to three community agencies in Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer to help attract, train and match mentors with children and youth in care.

“We are so grateful for the investment our government is making in mentoring for youth in care,” said

Traffic stop leads to arrest August 1

While on patrol police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle and located a male subject who was breaching his curfew conditions. Further investigation found that the female driver of the vehicle was in possession of marihuana and she was subsequently arrested. The male subject was transported to cells for a bail hearing to be conducted. The female was charged for Possession of a Controlled Substance as well as numerous traffic offences and released.

A Camrose woman was arrested and charged with breaching the alcohol provisions of her probation order. The female was released by a Justice of the Peace and is slated to appear in Provincial Court.

At 5:15 p.m. police were dispatched to the area of Enevold Drive and 63 Street as a vehicle had struck a parked car in the area, and then drove into someone’s yard. An investigation into the incident revealed that the 60-year-old male driver had experienced a medical episode while driving, and was subsequently taken to hospital where he was treated.
