Re/Max hosts golf tournament to support Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation The Camrose Re/Max office encourages golfers to support a good cause this summer. Re/Max is hosting a Children’s Miracle Network event to raise money for the care of sick and injured children at Stollery Children’s Hospital. You can make a donation even if you don’t golf. A bounce castle and hot air balloon rides will be available for a donation to Children’s Miracle Network. The network aims to help as many children as possible so every dollar helps. Aidan has visited the Stollery Children’s Hospital twice. The first time was as a three-and-a-half year old with a fractured skull. She returned last November with blood on her brain and stayed at the hospital for two-and-a-half weeks before moving to the Glenrose. She had the privilege of attending Camp Everest this summer, a Stollery camp for neurosurgery patients, held at Camp He-Ho-Ha. Aidan reminds everyone to also attend Dairy Queen’s Miracle Treat Day on Thursday, August 14. Proceeds from every Blizzard sold will benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Paisley visits Camrose at next summer’s BVJ By Murray Green

The first act to be named for next year’s version of the Big Valley Jamboree was Brad Paisley. As soon as the performer’s name was announced, people began making plans for Aug. 2, 2015, the date of his concert as the headliner. Paisley has been in the spotlight for 15 years and has five platinum albums to his credit. Ticket renewals for 2015 will be available starting on Aug. 18; non-renewal tickets will be available on Nov. 1. Visit BigValleyJamboree. com or call 1-888-404-1234 for more details. Panhandle Productions producer Larry Werner said the competition for talented artists is increasing. “Country music is getting hotter and there is a change in the landscape,” indicated Werner. “There are more festivals coming on the market in both the United States and Canada, so we are probably going to see an increase in demand and there are only so many headliners out there. Our weekend is one of the busiest of the summer.” Werner is hoping that 22 years of history is Big Valley Jamboree’s advantage. “We have reputation on

our side and we are hoping that helps us. But, there is a bit of a change. The good deals are not there like they were a couple of years ago.” His United States talent buyer, Gil Cunningham, echoed his comments. “Headliners are always in demand. There are three new festivals on this weekend (Aug. 1 to 3) over the last few years that have cropped up,” said Cunningham, noting Washington, Oregon and Idaho. “They are going after headliners.” Canada also has three or four festivals on the same date. “Not only is it a challenge with other festivals, but there are also more country tours then there has ever been. Last year, there were 18 country tours and when I started there were none. Before it was the fair season, now the majority of them are touring,” explained Cunningham. “When a headliner goes on tour, they take one or two opening acts with them. They take acts that give them a chance to sell more tickets. That scoops up the really good support acts as well. That makes it even more competitive.” Panhandle purchased 65 acres to future camping that will be used next summer.

Camrose welcomes Snowbirds By Dan Jensen

Camrosians and Big Valley Jamboree-goers had the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with members of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds Aug. 1 to 3. “We had over 500 people come out to meet them at the Maple Split Ice Cream Social Friday night,” said Camrose Snowbirds organizing committee chair Jadene Mah. “It was great to see all the people who came out to see them and the jets. “All the Snowbirds commented over and over again how impressed they were to see so many kids.” The social was followed by a showing of Planes, a film produced by DisneyToon Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. “We had a few kids that showed up with their own cardboard airplane creations that were just fantastic,” said Mah. “It was a very unique opportunity and a huge hit with everyone who was there. “It spoke a lot about how ideal our Camrose airport is.” The Snowbirds signed more than 200 autographs on each of the three days they were here. They performed over Rudy Swanson Park starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday and over the Big Valley site starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Also on Sunday, they visited Big Valley Jamboree where they were introduced on the stage by emcee Danny Hooper and spent some time mingling with people in the audience. Mah said the success of the Snowbirds’ visit was due in large part to the dedicated Camrose volunteers. “There is a lot of work that goes into hosting the

Snowbirds and there are very few airports that the Snowbirds can fly into where the general public can get such a close view of the jets.” The Snowbirds presented their annual lithograph to Camrose Flying Club president Barry Graham. Mah said the Camrose Flying Club is definitely open to hosting the Snowbirds again in the future. “The volunteers found the work very enjoyable.” The Snowbirds aerobat-

ic team was formed in 1971 and received squadron status as 431 (Air Demonstration) Squadron in 1978. The top speed of the aircraft, with smoke tanks attached, is 412 knots (470 mph or 750 km/h). During a performance, the Snowbirds will fly at speeds ranging from 100 knots (115 mph or 185 km/h) to 320 knots (370 mph or 590 km/h). The team’s 2014 theme is To the Stars–Fueled by Legacy.

It is a tradition for the Snowbirds to shake hands with each other after every flight as a show of camaraderie.

Camrose Founders Days this weekend By Dan Jensen

Camrosians are being invited to celebrate their rich culture and heritage at the Founders Days Aug. 15 to 17. “This year we are going to be recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Camrose Normal School building as well as the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War,” said Founders Days organizer Janine Carroll. Friday

The weekend-long celebration will get underway at 10 a.m. Friday with a tea at Rosehaven, which began as Camrose Normal School in 1914 and played an important role in the Second World War. Cake will be served in the atrium cafeteria area (accessed via the Rosehaven Heritage Building main entrance on 53 Street), and tours of the courtyard gardens will be given by members of the Camrose Horticultural Club, which maintains the indoor garden on behalf of Rosehaven staff and residents. “People will be able to view historical information about the building, including original blueprints and old photographs, and learn more about the Bethany Group, the organization that currently occupies it,” said Carroll. A Messiah Church Hospitality tea will get underway at 11 a.m. and be followed by a Promenade on Main Street, starting from Candler Art Gallery. “Let yourself be thrown

back in time, dust off your bonnets and derbies, and join us for our retro walking parade,” said Carroll. “The half-way stop will be at the Messiah hospitality tea.” A Founders Days opening ceremony starting at 1 p.m. will honour the late Bill Fowler. The reception that follows at 2 p.m. will feature delectable Norwegian fare provided by the Lefse House, and provide information on the City of Camrose Historical Inventory Program. A one-and-one-half -hour

walking tour of the Old Sparling community will get underway at 3 p.m. “It will be led by Glenda Rott, in character as Signe Spokkeli Hills, first Camrose school teacher,” said Carroll. “She (Rott) will entertain with stories of classrooms long past.” A Camrose Valleyview Cemetery Graveyard Tour led by John Person at 7 p.m. will be followed at 8:30 p.m. by a Ghost Walk starting from the Rudy Swanson parking lot, directly east of

the Camrose Recreation Centre. Saturday

Camrose Heritage Railway Station will be the site of a Firebox Festival and Garden Party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “It will provide the opportunity to listen to Morley Riske and the Station Swing Band in the gazebo, enjoy a beverage and treat from the Station tea room, take a ride on the Mirror Lake Express and tour the grounds,” said Carroll. “Children will be

able to make crafts and greet Percy, Thomas, James and Emily as they run on the G-scale train track in the Garden Railway.” Camrose and District Centennial Museum will be the site of a Family Culture Craze from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring blacksmith demonstrations, the 1912 Case Steam Engine, old fashioned washing machine, weaving by the Camrose Craft Club, display by the Alberta Genealogy Club Camrose branch, and chili concession. Members of the museum board of directors will be giving personal tours. Local director Sandra McLay and a talented acting cast will be presenting the dessert theatre production Mary’s Wedding at the Bailey Theatre starting at 7 p.m. “Viewers will be able to relive the romance of Mary Chalmers and her “beau,” Charlie, a Canadian farmer’s son taken up in the great wave of patriotism and duty that marked the first years of the First World War,” said Carroll. Dessert will be served by Bernell Odegard, from The Lefse House. Sunday

Founders Days 2014 will come to an end with a Sunday matinee performance of Mary’s Wedding (minus the dessert) at 2 p.m. Tickets for both the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon performances are available from Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Candler Art Gallery.

Local efforts mark anniversaries of world wars By Janine Carroll

One hundred years ago this week a Camrose Canadian headline read “Austria-Hungary has declared war on Servia; other European nations may be drawn into big conflict.” We have the benefit of history to know what followed. We know that the next edition of the Camrose Canadian, Aug. 6, 1914, would carry headlines “Great Britain declared war on Germany last Tuesday evening.” Being a Dominion of Britain without any international standing, Canada was automatically at war when Britain declared it; however our Governor General made it clear when on Aug. 5, 1914, he declared war between Canada and Germany. We know now that this ‘conflict’ would become known as ‘The War to End All Wars’. The First World War was a war without parallel, surpassing anything the world had experienced up until then by its massive scale of destruction. Cana-

Rebecca Hohnsbein and Brian Dumont will be starring in Mary’s Wedding, a heartfelt re-enactment of the Canadian war-time experience, during this year’s Founders Days celebration.

dian communities would send over 625,000 men and a few thousand women to the front lines. Few Canadian families were unaffected and the home-front mobilized to support the troops.

“War gardens” became commonplace as the First World War continued, as Allied governments called on their citizens to grow as much as they could for their own consumption so farm and commercial produce could be sent to our troops overseas. By 1917, planting a War Garden was considered a national duty; the citizens of Canada’s cities and towns were very supportive. Urban parks were cultivated into vegetable gardens as were front lawns and even unused airplane landing strips. Little is known about our local war gardens during the First World War. Rural living and large lots may suggest that a common area may not have been required. By the Second World War, these gardens had become known as Victory Gardens. Once again the home front population stepped up to produce what was to be consumed locally so commercial production could be directed overseas. Three years into this second Great War food short-

ages were critical and it was even suggested that food would win the war. Canada and the United States were not only feeding their own population at home and all allied soldiers fighting in Europe, they were also feeding the population of our European Allies. During the Second World War the Camrose Victory Garden was located very close to the current location of the Camrose Railway Station. The row of trees to the west of the Station was the eastern border of the garden so it was where the laneway and row of houses are now. It is remembered as being very large, perhaps taking up that entire block. Garden plots were available for families to cultivate for their own needs, the size of the plot dependent upon the size of the family’s needs. Station agent Frank Bailey’s family (wife and two children) gardened at this community plot, the location making it very handy. Over the years the Sta-

tion has conducted a great deal of research into war gardens and in respect to the local war effort has re-created a Victory Garden. As a youngster, Stu Bailey had fond memories of the experience and shared with station staff. The Victory Garden is a wonderful addition to its historical garden collection. Members of the community are invited to take a stroll to enjoy its many multi-seasonal gardens. To mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War and 75th of the Second World War, the Camrose Railway Station has also produced a Canadian wartime play, Mary’s Wedding, to be performed at the Bailey Theatre during Founders Days. An evening performance will take place on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m., and a matinee performance on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Railway Station 780672-3099 and at Candler Art Gallery.

Police respond to collisions August 8

In the late afternoon hours, police responded to two motor vehicle collisions; one of which was on 48 Avenue near the Bill Fowler Centre, and the other was in the 5100 block of 53 Street. In both cases, violation tickets were issued to the offending drivers and no injuries were reported. Shortly after 9 p.m., police checked a male and female in a vehicle that was parked in the east end industrial area. Records checks determined that the 29-yearold male was breaching his bail conditions by having contact with the female. The male was arrested and brought before a Justice of the Peace on these matters.

I would like to thank the organizers of the Big Valley Parade for the hard work they do each year. I look forward to this, our only parade of the year. It was great to see so may children taking part. The bands were great. That’s a long walk carrying a heavy instrument and playing as they walked. Much appreciated.

What makes a parade so special to me is not the length of it or the number of entries. I applaud those who took the time to decorate to make theirs a quality entry. Whether you are in a car, truck, tractor, fire truck or other conveyance, dress them up! A few flowers, streamers, flags or whatever says you put some effort into advertising your business or club. Could it not be a requirement set out by the organizers that, if you are in the parade you must decorate? Gladys Kupka, Camrose Congratulations to the Sea Serpents

Congratulations to the Sea Serpents (Camrose’s competitive summer swim club) on the success of so many decades of competitive swimming. As a former member and one of the team’s many coaches from

years past, I was proud to see in the article that your numbers remain strong and that you are committed to the principles of swimming and representing Camrose positively, both in and out of the water, and that many of the coaches I knew when they were learning to swim are now long-time coaches of the team. What you may find interesting is that the celebratory number of the club’s history is probably a lot higher than the 40 years noted. In fact, Dr. Bernie Clark, who was my first swim coach, started the club something like 55 to 60 years ago. At that time the club was known as the Camrose Competitive Swim Team. In the early 1970s the club’s president at the time, Dr. Ken MacQuarrie, suggested to thew team and coaches that we might want to jazz up the

club’s name. We thought of the sea serpent, a legendary creature of the sea thought to resemble a snake or dragon. In order to make the sea serpent unique to Camrose, we changed the “sea” to “C” and formally changed the team’s name in 1974 to Camrose “C” Serpents. So while the team’s name “changed” in 1974, it was in fact a club for at least two decades prior to that change. I heartily congratulate the Sea Serpents, their coaches, parents and supporters on the momumental occasion you are celebrating, and wish each and every member continued success in the pool and in life. Thank you for creating the opportunity to reminisce about the joys of growing up in beautiful Camrose. Marlaine (Voytechek) Hagel, Thunder Bay, Ontario

Parkland Church annual service and picnic Aug. 17 By Dan Jensen

Parkland Evangelical Lutheran Church will be holding its annual service and picnic starting at 2 p.m. Aug. 17. “It’s something we do once a year,” explained Parkland Church historical committee member Murray Farness. “It’s a community gathering that has always been pretty well attended. We get some people coming from as far away as Calgary.” Rev. Bill Harder will be the presiding minister at the service, following which a plaque will be placed on a church wall in recognition of the late Bob Read, who contributed many hours towards the building’s restoration and its eventual designation in April, 2010, as a provincial historic resource. “Dad and Murray (Farness) were always doing something with the church,” said Read’s son, Brett. Parkland Church restoration efforts started in 2002 when $12,000 was spent on the repair of the church steeple, chimney and roof. The church was given a new coat of paint about seven years ago but is getting to the point where a new coat is needed fairly soon. “We are making people aware that it needs to be painted again but that probably won’t happen until next summer,” said Farness. Work this summer has included levelling and repairing some of the concrete markers in the graveyard. Read, who is also a member of the church historical committee, said it is important to keep on top of the repairs.

“You let a little weather seep in and what is a small expense now becomes a bigger expense later on,” said Read. The last regular worship service at Parkland Church was held in 1970. History

Parkland Evangelical Lutheran Church is a small rural church with a steeply pitched gable roof and Gothic windows that is located approximately 10 km east of Camrose on the correction line, Highway 26, and approximately eight km northeast of the hamlet of Ohaton. The front (north) elevation features a central porch and corner tower with a crenellated parapet. The rear (south) elevation has a shed-roofed porch and brick chimney. The church and its associated cemetery are situated on a small landscaped plot of land that is clearly demarcated from the neighbouring properties by lines of mature trees. The heritage value of the Parkland Evangelical Lutheran Church lies in its

identity as an excellent example of rural Lutheran church design in Alberta. “Starting in the 1890s the region around Ohaton attracted a number of Norwegian Lutheran settlers from Minnesota,” states the Canada’s Historic Places website. “After 1890 additional Norwegian Lutherans, this time from South Dakota, arrived in the area. In 1903, five families of the latter group organized themselves into the Parkland Lutheran Congregation and began to hold worship services in their homes and raise funds for the construction of a church. The congregation grew and, in 1913, it was officially incorporated as the Parkland Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation. The new congregation was accepted as a member of the Canadian District of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America, which is now part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. This synod followed a form of Lutheranism advocated by the Norwegian lay minister and reformer Hans Nielsen Hauge in the late 1700s and

early 1800s. Hauge believed that Lutheranism should focus on personal faith experiences, more informal worship services, and a greater role for lay ministry.” Services were conducted in the Norwegian language for the first eight years, and then, for a time, alternatively in English and Norwegian. As time went on and more settlers of various nationalities arrived, English was used more prominently. Rev. C.S. Vang was the first pastor and had the first confirmation class – Lauretta Brager, Stanley Fossen, Muriel Brager, Irene Brager and Josie Mellemberg. “He (Rev. Vang) and his wife started the first meetings of young people,” said a church history put together by Iona Brager. “It was the young people’s group which raised the money to purchase the organ, even before the church was built. The organ was kept at the home of Ray and Clara Brager and used during services there.” In 1930 the Parkland congregation formed a building committee and, using local labour, a basement was dug and a concrete foundation was poured. The first wedding in the church was that of Alfred Vikse and Gladys Brager on June 21, 1931. “The interior walls, still unfinished, were well adorned with wild roses,” said Brager. Delores (Olson) was the first person baptized in the church. Due largely to the Great Depression, construction progressed slowly over the next 16 years. The church was com-

pleted in 1946 and was officially dedicated that October. The officiating pastors were Rev. Mars Dale, president of the Lutheran Church of the Canada District, and Rev. A.M. Vinge. The design of Parkland Evangelical Lutheran Church reflects the sensibilities of pietistic Lutheranism. “These sensibilities are demonstrated by the overall simplicity of the church – its lack of decoration and ornamentation and the use of white paint throughout,” states Canada’s Historic Places. “The starkness of the interior is relieved only by the natural wood colours of the pews, the lectern, the baptismal font, and the altar. The two sacraments of the Lutheran faith – Eucharist and baptism – are embodied in the altar area and in the baptismal font. The altar itself is relatively undecorated and is situated lower to the ground and closer to the congregation than is generally found in Lutheran churches that do not follow Haugean principles. The painting of the “Light of the World” in the altarpiece shows Christ knocking at the door of the heart and is particularly expressive of the pietistic emphasis upon a deep, personal relationship to Jesus. A small choir loft located opposite the altar area embodies the distinctive importance of hymns in Lutheran worship services.” The dominant feature of the church is the corner bell tower with crenellated parapet and louvered ventilation openings.

Hot dogs and ice cream will be available. The Alberta Central Railway Museum is located south of Highway 13 near Wetaskiwin. Watch for signs on the highway. When Alberta Central Railway Museum pounded the last spike at its 10th birthday celebration in 2002, it completed a mile loop of track. Visitors can take a train ride on the restored 1926 firstclass observation-buffet-sleeper Mount Avalanche. In a vintage 1926 passenger coach, you will experience historic train travel, maybe for the first time, maybe as a way to bring back the sounds and

motion of train wheels on steel track from days gone by. Alberta Central Railway Museum, through its rail yard and exhibits, tells the story of the work of railroaders, the story of train travel in Canada, the impact of Canadian Pacific Railway on settlement, and the importance of railway to Western Canada into the age when steam was retired. Alberta Central Railway Museum is named after a historic railway which originally served Central Alberta until 1981 Phone 780-352-2257 or view www.abcentralrailway. com for more information.

Screen test returns to Camrose Aug. 20 By Dan Jensen Women will be able to keep on top of their breast health by visiting the Screen Test trailer in Camrose Aug. 20 and 21. Screen Test is an Alberta Health Services program that provides high quality mammography and breast health education to rural women. It has consistently exceeded international standards for the early detection of breast cancer. Screening mammograms are one of the most effective ways for women over 50 to find breast cancer early. “They can detect breast cancer when it is very small, two to three years before you or your physician can feel it,” states Screen Test. Statistics show that one in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. They also show that more than 75 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer are 50 years of age or older, and that having a mother, sister or a daughter diagnosed with breast cancer increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. Eighty per cent of women who develop breast cancer have no family history. A Breast Screening

Life Plan recommends that women younger than 40 get to know how their breasts look and feel and see their doctor regularly for a periodic health exam. The plan also recommends that women between the ages of 40 and 49 talk to their health care provider about their breast cancer risk and the risks and benefits of screening mammograms, get an annual physical breast exam from their health care provider, and check their breasts regularly for unusual changes. Women between the ages of 50 and 59 should get regular screening mammograms every two years, an annual physical breast exam from their health care provider, and check their breasts regularly for unusual changes. Women aged 70 and over should talk to their health care provider about continuing mammograms, get an annual physical breast exam from their health care provider, and check their breasts regularly for unusual changes. Screen Test appointments can be made by calling 1-800-667-0604 toll free.

So when the idea of giving $5,000 to the Reading University came up for discussion, members were in full agreement. “One of the main focuses of Rotary International is literacy,” explained Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak president John Stoddart. “There are a lot of problems around the world with literacy and a lot of help is needed, but we thought we should also support literacy in Camrose.” Stoddart is a big fan of the Reading University program, which is offered by the Battle River Community Foundation in conjunction with the Battle River School Division and the Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta. “I think it is really needed in the community,” said Stoddart. “It (the program) really helps young people at a time when they are getting used to reading and encourages them to read. “The benefits they receive stay with them the rest of their lives.” Battle River Community Foundation board chair Blain Fowler, who accepted the donation, thanked the members of the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak for their

farsightedness, remarking that Reading University is a game changing experience for students that provides lifelong benefits. He congratulated all the members of the club for being community builders. Reading University is a four-week summer program at Augustana and the Flagstaff Campus in Killam designed to broaden children’s basic literacy skills, provide a range of experiences that meet their different learning styles, and increase their engagement in learning by offering a program that is interesting, fun and educationally sound. Students from Grades 2 and 3 engage in a wide variety of activities that range from reading books to playing word games, engaging in computer-based activities,

creating and acting out skits, using recipes to prepare treats; attending live theatre, drawing pictures and writing captions, using maps and reading signs to plan routes for visits to museums or airports. All aspects of the day are included in the program, from bus transportation in the morning and evening to snacks, lunch and the cost of field trips. “The school division takes responsibility for designing the educational program, recruiting and paying the staff, providing transportation and inviting the appropriate children to participate,” said Fowler. “The Augustana Campus provides classroom space, nutritious meals and snacks for our students and provides us with lunchtime supervisors.”

BATTLE RIVER SCHOOL DIVISION #31 SCHOOL OPENING INFORMATION 2014-15 SCHOOL YEAR

Our Mission The Battle River School Division, in partnership with parents and the community, will ensure that each student acquires the necessary knowledge, skills, and core values to be a caring, productive member of our democratic society.

Division Senior Leadership Team Message

SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR

On behalf of the teachers, administrators, and support staff, we would like to welcome each and every student to Battle River School Division for the 2014-2015 school year. Staff will continue to strive to achieve the vision: Every Student, Every Day, A Success by providing a holistic educational experience focused on the academic, character, and relationship development of each student. We are looking forward to working together with parents and the community this year to ensure students are well prepared for their future. In addition, we’ve had a number of leadership changes and, as a result, are welcoming several new members to the BRSD Division and School Administration teams, as listed on this page. 2014-2015 promises to be an exciting time that will bring many rewards and successes for each student in Battle River School Division. Let’s get started!

Due to longer instructional days, most “Feeder Schools” have additional ‘feeder days’ on which students will not be in attendance. Holden, Ryley, Allan Johnstone and Cornerstone Christian School are operating with a four-day week. Principals at “Feeder Schools” and at the four-day week schools will likely distribute a slightly modified school year calendar for their students.

Learning Institute

OCTOBER

Schools, Division Office, and other worksites in Battle River School Division #31 will be closed on August 28, 2014 to permit all staff to participate in a Learning Institute. School sites will also be closed on August 29.

NEW REGISTRATIONS Students new to Battle River School Division #31 should register at the school they will be attending and provide a birth certificate when registering.

BUSING SERVICE

Students residing in the Beaver County, Camrose County and Flagstaff County Wards Students new to these wards should register for bus service by calling the Transportation Department at 780-672-6131, extension 5244, or 1-800-262-4869, extension 5244, well in advance of school opening so that efficient routes can be planned. Students who were transported to a Division-operated school by bus during the last school year will be included in our plans for the 2014-2015 school year. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the Director or Assistant Director of Transportation. Students residing in the City of Camrose Transportation will be provided for students within the City of Camrose on the following basis: • Eligible students (those who live further than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school), will be served first at no cost; those students who were registered in a Battle River Regional Division school last year and were eligible for busing will be planned for again this year. Reminder: Bus passes will not be sent to schools, but must be picked up at the BRSD office. Students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus. • Non-eligible students (those who live closer than 2.4 kilometers from their designated school) will be served next, on a first-come, first-served basis, for an annual fee of $375.00 per student in grades 1 to 12, or $337.50 per ECS student. Registration for busing of non-eligible students will be confirmed upon receipt of the applicable fee. Reminder: Bus passes will not be sent to schools, but must be picked up at the BRSD office. Students will be expected to produce their bus passes upon entering the bus. • Bus Passes are sold as a year pass; no half-passes or winter passes will be sold. • We now accept cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard and Debit. The first day of busing for City of Camrose Public Schools will be Tuesday, September 2, 2014. All Camrose students must pick up their bus passes between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. during the week of August 18 to 22, 2014 at the following address: 5402-48A Avenue, Camrose. Any questions regarding attendance areas and/or eligibility for busing should be directed to the Transportation Assistant.

Founders Days to honour Fowler By Dan Jensen

The Camrose Founders’ Days committee will honour the community-building work of the late William Frank (Bill) Fowler during a Founders Days opening ceremony in the Bailey Theatre this Friday. “William Frank Fowler was one local Second World War soldier who returned to Camrose to become a wellknown leader and businessman,” said Camrose Founders Days organizer Janine Carroll. “We also recognize the positive influence other Fowler family members have made on our early history and would like to bring attention also to William and Thomas Fowler, brothers who arrived in Camrose during the early settler years.” Born in 1917, Bill rose from humble beginnings, conquering hardship to serve his country and to become an inspirational community leader. At the age of 12, during the depression, he contributed to the income of his single parent home. His mother made artificial flowers, which Bill and his nineyear-old brother sold door to door in Camrose. “Live flowers were not readily available locally in this era and people wanted them to create centrepieces for dining room tables and home decor,” said Carroll.

Bill Fowler

“Funeral homes needed them for services.” Bill also delivered the Edmonton Journal and sold subscriptions to Camrosians door to door. “At the age of 12 he did not work to buy candy or anything for himself, but did so to put food on the table,” said Carroll. “He learned valuable lessons about himself at this very young age – he was actually pretty good at sales and had a great entrepreneurial spirit. He had a love for newspapers and an even greater love for family and community.” When war broke out Bill enlisted and went through initial training before moving on to elementary flight school, where he learned how to fly. Next he enrolled in Service Flying Training School, where he was taught how to fly in combat.

“He had a wife and children at this point, so it was deemed he would be more suitable to train other pilots than fly combat missions,” said Carroll. “As a result he attended ‘Instructor School.”’ In September, 1944, Bill was shipped to an Operational Training Unit in England, which was a division of the Allied Bomber Command. During the next six months at OTU he completed a conversion course on Wellington twin engine bombers and assigned a crew to fly operationally in the European Theatre. In the spring of 1945 as the war in European ended, he attended a Four Engine Heavy Bomber Conversion Course on Lancasters, which would have enabled him to continue to serve as a bomber pilot on aircraft designed to strike Japan. His next move would have been to somewhere in the Pacific, however the war ended quite suddenly in August after two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. He returned to Camrose in October of 1945. Bill became committed to many organizations over the next several decades. He helped establish the Camrose Flying Society and was involved in the development of the Camrose Airport. Orville Clarence Nelsen Orville Clarence Nelsen (born on July 15, 1921) passed away peacefully on August 6, 2014 in the Willow Cottage Bethany Meadows Residence at 93 years of age. He was loved, admired and cherished by his wife of 66 years Elsie Ellen Nelsen (nee Manyk); and his children Marlene Ellen Chan (nee Nelsen), widow of Terence Tai Wa Chan, and Wayne Orville Nelsen and his wife Charlene Ellen Nelsen (nee Miller); his grandchildren and their spouses: Owen and Neila Nelsen, Blair and Heidi Nelsen, and Theresa and Dean MacKenzie; his beloved greatgrandchildren (from oldest to youngest) Nolan, Cameron, Annika, George, Abigail and Kali; his sister June van der Velde; his brothers Gordon and Harvey; and his sister-in-law Ann, wife of his brother Allan; and his brother-in-law Garry Manyk. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Allan and Edward. His many friends and anyone who met him were honored by his loyalty, generosity, work ethic, compassion and unrelenting courage. Orville firmly believed that laughter was the best medicine. His zest for life, his faith, his optimism, his sense of humor and his recounting of endless stories, tales and jokes, often specific to his journey through life and demonstrating affection for the rural farm, animals and nature, have forever given us strength, guidance and pride in our Scandinavian heritage. Being a member of the church family was always important to him, but it wasn’t until 1984 that he and Elsie invited Jesus Christ into their lives and that made such a change. They became involved in Bible studies and joined a Gospel Motorcade, traveling to many parts of the province as a group. They were also involved in getting the Alpha Chapter of Campers for Christ started in Alberta. This was a most enjoyable time in their lives and they developed many lasting friendships. Orville was in charge of membership for about eight or nine years. Our loss is heartfelt. Orville left a formidable legacy through his passion for storytelling and his powers of observation that gave us insight on the world around us and the humanity of our day-to-day experience. A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Solid Rock Lutheran Church with Pastor Collin Hauch officiating. Interment took place at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Society of Camrose, Alberta Cancer Foundation or to the charity of one’s choice.

Allan Armin Hein August 20, 1935 – August 5, 2014 Allan Armin Hein of Hay Lakes passed away on Tuesday August 5, 2014 at the age of 78 years. Allan was born on August 20, 1935 to Adam and Hilda (nee Grams) Hein. He lived in a log house until his family built a new house. Allan will be forever remembered by Hertha, his loving wife of 53 years; daughter Carol (Darrel) Maier of Sherwood Park; grandchildren Melanie (Scott), Denver and Tracy; sisters Eileen, Ruth and Doreen; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. CAMROSE & DAYSLAND

Margaret Joneta Rolston Margaret (Sherbeck) Rolston was born on March 25, 1912 at home in the Vang district near Wetaskiwin, AB to parents, Carl and Mary Sherbeck. At the age of three, she and her family moved to Wisconsin where her mother Mary died shortly thereafter, leaving three small girls to be raised by their father. Several years later, the family moved back to the Vang district where Margaret attended grade school. She eventually obtained her University degree in Education which she put to good use, teaching for over 33 years, 17 of which were in the Camrose area. In 1935, Margaret married Clarence Kjorlien and they had two children, son Monrad and daughter Carol. She eventually found herself a single parent, but managed to provide a good and happy home where her children knew they were loved and well cared for. Above all, she set a good example by her own life and faith, teaching her children to know God and have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In May 1975, she married Ray Rolston of Edmonton. They enjoyed over 26 wonderful years together, appreciating retirement and travelling much of the world until Ray passed away in November 2001. Shortly thereafter, Margaret relocated back to Camrose where she could walk daily to visit her daughter Carol. Margaret is predeceased by her husband Ray Rolston, and son Monrad Kjorlien. She is survived by daughter Carol Pederson and family. At the age of 102, Granny (as she was affectionately known to many) passed away peacefully at her home in Bethany Meadows. She will be sadly missed by friends and family.

BVJ celebrates another sold out show

A lot of fun and a variety of country music was enjoyed at the Big Valley Jamboree. Photos clockwise from top left: Richard Sterban of the Oak Ridge Boys brought back 41 years of memories. Allison Robinson looked as pretty as a picture trying on a new cowboy hat. Zac Brown brought the crowd to its feet with southern sounds as Saturday came to a close. Demi Murphy, left, and Elise Darwish encouraged patrons like Marianne Froese to enter a draw for a trip to Chicago. Miranda Lambert entered the main stage in a big way as she wrapped up the action on Sunday evening. Motocross riders performed tricks and stunts as they provided some thrills between shows. Alannah Albach of Rimbey tried to stay on a mechanical bull for eight seconds. Photos by S and L Photography and Murray Green.

Meet a few of the women on the Management Team at the

Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino

The mission of the staff at The Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino is simple – to make every guest’s stay the very best experience it can be. They strive for you to have a positive interaction with every staff member you contact, from making your reservation, during your stay and to departure. Front Desk Manager Julie Harris knows what it takes to make her guests feel at home. Having been in the hospitality industry for seven years specializing in hospitality and tourism management, she understands Julie Harris, that first impressions are critical. All staff must be well Front Desk Manager trained, knowledgeable and respectful of guests; and staff must be problem solvers willing to go the extra mile. She notes, “There is such a great sense of satisfaction in hearing from guests that we have made their stay a wonderful experience.” In fact, the hotel has guest appreciation nights on Mondays and Wednesdays where the staff have a chance to personally get to know their guests. The 113 spotless guest rooms at the hotel are thanks to Housekeeping Managers Bevan Stevens and Tina Sroka. Along with their dedicated staff, these ladies make sure that your room is up to the highest of standards, (housekeeping staff use UV Wands and blacklight to check all guest rooms to make sure each room not only LOOKS clean, but IS clean), and guests have all of the amenities they need to make them feel at home. Notes Bevan, Bevan Stevens, “We believe in having a plan, teamwork and attention to Housekeeping Manager detail. Great communication with our guests is also key. If there’s something specific a guest needs, we will do our best to accommodate them.” Adds Tina, “We don’t want to just meet the high standards already set in place by Best Western International….we want to EXCEED them. One of my favorite comments from guests is that their room was so clean, they felt like they were the first people to stay in it!” With a host of amenities offered on site including the EATS Family Restaurant, Jokers Den Pub, casino, Inspirations Salon and Spa, fitness facility, pool, hot tub Tina Sroka, and waterslide, banquet facilities and a free hot buffet Housekeeping Manager breakfast offered with each room, there are numerous reasons for you or visiting friends and family to stay at this wonderful hotel. Guests love the Best Weatern Plus Camrose Resort Casino so much that they’re already booked for BVJ weekend next year!

Lauren Cleveland, Owner,

ONETOOTH Activewear

Sometimes you don’t really plan on a new career path….sometimes it finds you. This was how owner Lauren Cleveland opened her new business in downtown Camrose a mere nine months ago. “After having our second son, the idea of resuming my previous career in the city…the long commute, child care…and the juggling act that would entail with two young sons…simply did not appeal to me,” notes Lauren. “Some friends of mine had told me they were looking to purchase an existing One Tooth store in Edmonton – and it sparked my interest. I had shopped at One Tooth before, and had loved all the items I had purchased.” After researching the possibilities, it was decided – Lauren would be opening her own One Tooth store in Camrose. In November 2013 the doors opened, and Lauren couldn’t be happier with her new career path. “I honestly love coming to work now. It really doesn’t feel like a job to me, and it has been such a great choice for our family. We are bringing in new products all the time...high quality Canadian-made yoga, active and loungewear in plenty of bright colors and styles. Our products cater to men, women and children. Plus with exceptional products and prices, One Tooth Activewear is a fantastic value in an often overpriced industry.” And the response to the new store? “Our customers are wonderful,” says Lauren. “We have lots of returnees … and new faces that are still hearing about us. It’s been great!”

Colleen Labelle, Owner McSliquors

When Colleen Labelle bought the liquor store next to Monte Carlo Restaurant in November 2012 she saw only one thing: potential. She polished the floors, cleaned up the office, washed the walls and touched up the paint, put a new glass door on the walk-in cooler (coldest beer in town!) and tripled the inventory. Colleen knew Camrose from her days as a tobacco sales representative selling cigars to vendors. She liked it here, so when the opportunity came to buy an independent liquor store she couldn’t resist. Business is good and her goals include becoming the go-to store for specialty products like craft-brewed beer. She carries over 120 varieties of craft-brewed beer and will begin selling the European Craft Beer advent calendar in September. She and her friend Murray, who manages Signature Cigars and Tobacco for Colleen, play host to wine tastings, the next one coming Sunday, September 28. The next time you’re looking for a good drink, stop into McSliquors for friendly service and the coldest beer in town.

2015 Ford Super Duty Taking Ford Tough to new extremes

Matt McLeod By Dan Jensen

The new Super Duty at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose takes Built Ford Tough to new extremes. "It's setting the standard for other heavy-duty pickups to follow," said Lamb Ford sales manager Brett Read. Super Duty's engine and chassis upgrades together deliver best-inclass horsepower, torque and towing capacity. The second generation 6.7 litre Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel now boasts 440 horsepower, up from 400 horsepower, and 860 lb.-ft. of torque, up from 800 lb.-ft., across all Super Duty models from F-250 to F-450. The F-450 tops the F-Series Super Duty pickup truck lineup with maximum towing capacity increasing to a classleading 31,200 lbs., a gain of 6,500. The truck's gross combined weight rating increases to a class-leading 40,000 lbs., a gain of 7,000. F-350 increases maximum towing capacity as well to 26,500 lbs., from 23,200 and the gross combined weight rating goes up 5,000 to 35,000 lbs. "The improved ratings are a result of designing and engineering the truck as an integrated system,"

said Read. "The approach enabled Ford engineers to optimize performance across the full Super Duty lineup." Key innovations on the 6.7 litre Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel are its compacted graphite iron engine block and reverse-flow layout. This segment-exclusive design places the exhaust inside the engine's V-shape, with the air intake positioned on the outside, resulting in a variety of advances: shorter airflow from the exhaust system to the new, larger tubocharger sitting between the engine's cylinder banks improves turbo responsiveness – key to providing torque quickly to truck customers when they need it most; positioning the turbo inside the engine's valley helps isolate the engine's hottest temperatures, improving performance and efficiency while also reducing noise, vibration and harshness to improve driver comfort. Enhancements include a larger turbocharger for faster air displacement, resulting in more power. The engine block is made of compacted graphite iron, which is stronger yet lighter than cast iron, is more wear-

resistant and has enhanced sealing properties. "The designers of the original 6.7 litre Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel predicted that it would eventually need to be upgraded for higher output," said David Ives, Ford Power Stroke technical specialist. "They designed it in a way that made it easier to add a larger turbocharger, increasing airflow and creating more power for dramatically improved performance, yet we haven't lost any efficiency." New injector tips spray a finer mist of fuel into the cylinders, which provides a most complete burn and helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Other benefits include lower emissions and less fuel deposit buildup on the intake valves over time. The engine is mated to a TorqShift six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission featuring a high-strength sinter-metal carrier with patented Ford rocker one-way clutch. Rule the class The standard powerplant on F-250 and F-350 is a 6.2 litre two valve V8 that produces 385 hp and 405 lb.-ft. of torque. A castiron block features fourbolt main bearing caps, including two additional

cross bolts, while a high capacity, high efficiency fluid filter on the transmission extends fluid and filter change intervals up to 240,000 km. Chassis improvements The F-350 is available with a high capacity towing package that includes new front springs and a wide track axle, increasing the gross combined weight rating with the 6.7 litre Power Stroke engine from 31,900 to 35,000 lbs. Improvements to the F-450 that allow it to handle the increased tow rating include commercial grade wheels and tires, upgraded rear U-joints and suspension components, including new rearm leaf springs, front and rear stabilizer bars, and shocks. The steering system has stronger gears and linkages and the fifth-wheel/goosneck has an increased towing capacity. The brakes are larger brakes and feature new antilock brake calibration for enhanced performance. For an easier towing experience overall, Super Duty offers class-exclusive features like an in-bed, seven-pin connector and PowerScope trailer tow mirrors. There's even a factoryinstalled, integrated trailer

brake controller to balance the performance of the truck's and electric trailer brakes. And the LCD productivity screen offers a pre-towing checklist and recalls settings for different trailers. A stowable bed extender made of fibreglass-reinforced polypropylene lets you haul more with the tailgate down or secure smaller loads with it up. You can also equip your truck with an industrial grade Tough Bed factory installed sprayin bedliner. Interior storage Inside, lots of storage helps keep your gear secure, yet within easy reach. You'll find lockable under-seat storage in the centre of the 40/20/40 split front seat, and beneath the 60/40 split flip-up/fold-down rear bench seat on certain Crew Cab models. The flow through centre console is large enough to hold hanging files, and features a 110-volt power outlet and two 12-volt powerpoints. Voice-activated Ford SYNC delivers hands-free calls, music and more with simple voice commands. You can see the 2015 Ford Super Duty at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Bill married B.H. (Berdie) Anderson in 1940, a woman who would prove to have similar community dedication and business aptitude. Together they founded the Camrose Booster in 1952. Berdie was the first female chamber president in Alberta and only the second in all of Canada. She played a huge role in setting up the first Camrose daycare facility so that young moms could work. It was the only facility available in Alberta at the time outside of Edmonton and Calgary. She was a member of the Burgess School for the Mentally Retarded, the predecessor to Camrose Association for Community Living. Before marrying Bill, Berdie was offered a job in the office at Camrose Lutheran College. “She absolutely adored and greatly admired her boss, Mr. Chester Ronning,” said Carroll. Berdie was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2006 for her achievements and received an Honourary Doctorate of

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM

Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. The UDF program began August 7, 2014, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Robyn Knauft at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www. camrose.ca.

Get ‘n Give event at UFA By Dan Jensen

The winners in UFA Cooperative Limited’s first Get ‘n Give contest will have the chance to meet the communities that were responsible for them being chosen in a special 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. event at the UFA Camrose Farm and Ranch Supply Store this Thursday. They will also provide an update on how they have used the funds they received. The UFA Get ‘n Give contest awarded a total of $250,000 ($50,000 each) for projects which support rural sustainability to the Village of Hussar, Foremost Minor Hockey, Foremost Seniors and Foremost Legacy Bridge Committee (one combined submission), the Spruce View Ag Society, Hand Hills Community Club and Marwayne Fire and Rescue. The Armena Athletic Association was named as one of the top five semifinalists for the $50,000 in the third round of the contest after submitting an application telling how it would, if chosen, build an addition to the skating shack. “Our addition would include an indoor washroom, storage room and a kitchen,” said the Armena Athletic Association application. “Right now our busy rink only has an outhouse beside it. Everyone would be excited to have an indoor washroom, especially parents with young children. The storage room would be used for a small tractor to clean the ice.” The event will be a chance for interested communities to gather information about the 2014-15 Get ‘n Give contest which is open to any group or organization within 200 km of a UFA location in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia that has a project that will support or enrich their communities, whether it be a piece of emergency equipment, a foundation for a new riding arena, or the addition to an existing structure. Projects that are not eligible are for-profit events, daycare facilities, medical causes, religious or political projects and company events. A group must be at least three people from the community. Submissions that are not selected in the first round will be advanced through to following rounds throughout the duration of the contest. Submissions may be added to or edited as the contest proceeds. UFA judging is involved to choose the first of the five winners. For the remaining four winners, the judges will assess all entries based on the same criteria and will submit five semifinalists to the winning group. They will then choose the next project to win based on the same criteria as the UFA judges.

Fowler family story recalled at Founders Continued from page 31

They were too late to fight; the rebellion ended in 1885 just as they arrived. “Details are a little vague but at that time, William settled in the Duhamel area, which is just on the other side of the valley to the south of Camrose, while Thomas did some work at Fort Edmonton,” said Carroll. “Thomas was a blacksmith and William a harness-maker. These

would be Bill’s grandfather and great uncle (Thomas was the great uncle).” The two travelled back to Ontario briefly to be married, and then returned west again with their brides in 1905. The brothers moved to Camrose to set up business for themselves. Thomas formed a partnership with Almer Ofrim, who had also been in Camrose since pioneer days.
