Teenager Alexandra Soanes faced life-changing news in 2011 when she was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Although faced with up to 10 finger pokes daily, constant blood sugar monitoring, a tremendous change in eating habits and four insulin injections a day, she refused to let her unwelcome disease keep her from being active. She also made a conscious decision to not allow the disease to rob her of quality of life or independence. Alexandra also began searching for ways to improve her own situation, including extensive research into acquiring a service dog with the assistance of the Lions Club of Canada. The remarkable animal she hopes to acquire in the near future is capable of detecting low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) quicker and more accurately than a high-tech glucose monitor! The ambitious Camrosian also made a pledge to help find a cure for diabetes. Over the past few months, with help from family, she has raised in excess of $12,200. This is the amount of money required for Alexandra and her mother Janet Hatch to compete in a 10 km. race in Reykjavik, Iceland this Saturday, August 23rd. The race is a fundraiser for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
