Santa for Seniors Christmas charity Andrukow Group Solutions Incorporated (AGSI) will be encouraging people to give back in a different way this holiday season with the launch of AGSI’s Santa for Seniors Christmas charity. The charity looks to collect and distribute gifts and lifeessentials to senior citizens in need, or on fixed incomes, as they struggle to keep pace. In this, its first year, AGSI’s Santa for Seniors will focus on the communities of Camrose, Viking, Ryley, Mundare, and surrounding area, with AGSI locations in these centres, volunteers, and retail partners, including Peavey Mart (Camrose) and Crossroads IDA in Viking; and radio station 790 CFCW all contributing to turn this vision into reality. The program will run from now until Dec. 17. Here’s how to get involved: visit www. agsiag.com and click on the Santa for Seniors banner for a list of gift ideas; visit participating retail partners (above)
to find the ornaments and gift ideas in Camrose or Viking, or the AGSI location in that community; remove an ornament and purchase the gift idea labelled on the front; give the purchased gift to a store employee or drop at your local AGSI location; gifts will be delivered in packages to seniors in need in the aforementioned communities with personal Gift Giving Days scheduled for Dec. 22 and 23. Statistics Canada reported in its 2011 census that there are nearly five million seniors aged 65 and older living in Canada. Of them, 7.1 per cent lived in collective dwellings or special care facilities, with an overwhelming majority of those living alone. The purchase of gifts and essentials is just one element of this very special initiative,” says Greg Andrukow, Andrukow Group Solutions Inc. president and CEO. “It’s about giving back and assisting those in need, espe-
cially during the Christmas season. For us, the most special part here will be the interaction with seniors in need when we get to deliver the packages and spend a few minutes to say hello, and hopefully bring some joy to those who might be struggling, or alone during the holidays.” AGSI’s Santa for Seniors launched on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the AGSI Camrose location – eat of Camrose on Highway 13, and south one kilometre on Highway 56 (north side of the Highway – 101, 46272 Highway 56) with CFCW on location during the Drive Home with AJ Keller. AGSI has been serving clients in central Alberta for over 30 years 17 AGSI and partner locations, and an experienced staff of agronomic consultants, AGSI is living up to its promise of “Making agriculture, our clients and our people better, stronger and proud of their profession.

FOOT PROBLEMS? I can help!
Plantars Fasciitis Do you wake up in the morning and find that the first few steps you take are extremely painful on the bottom of your feet? Also marked by burning sensation in the base of the foot throughout the day, Plantars Fasciitis is one of our most limiting types of foot pain. Cause: Dropping of the foot arch causes pressure on the Plantar Fascial ligament on the base of the foot. The bone structures start to press in an abnormal fashion on the ligament causing the ligament to tear, either from the heel bone or the metatarsal joint heads. Prognosis: If it goes untreated for a long period of time, Plantars Fasciitis can become more painful when the body tries to protect itself by placing calcium deposits in the ligament tissue to repair the tears, causing you to have heel spurs. Treatment: Plantars Fasciitis can be treated successfully with the use of a properly fitted orthotic to support the heel and base of the foot. Very often icing and stretching exercises will be prescribed as well. If properly treated the symptoms and pain of Plantars Fasciitis should be gone in a few days. The tears take six to ten weeks to begin to heal, then the rest is up to your body, footwear, and diligence of caring for your feet. You are welcome to a free foot assessment at Total Orthotics to help you to determine the best course of action for your foot health.

KING OF THE SLOTS AT CAMROSE RESORT CASINO
Congratulations to Christopher Mackie of Sylvan Lake who won over $1.3 million on a Diamond Millions slot machine at the Best Western Plus Camrose Resort Casino on Nov. 8. Pictured from left to right are slots manager Nancy Kalaf, friend Elizabeth Duplessis, Mackie and general manager Dawn Anderson. In June 2012, a Diamond Millions provincial jackpot was also won at the Camrose Resort Casino with over $1.28 million being awarded.
By Dan Jensen The agriculture industry isn’t what many Canadians think. A Canadian Federation of Independent Business survey of 523 livestock, crop and fruit and vegetable producers shows that contrary to a December 2013 focus group study commissioned by the federal department’s department, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), agriculture is innovative and growing, that farmers are taking care of the environment, and that the predominant succession plan for primary producers is to pass the farm onto family members. Over half (51 per cent) of livestock, crop and fruits and vegetables producers who were surveyed indicated that they are planning to adopt new innovative technologies and practices within the next three years. One in four (25 per cent) said they plan to adopt valueadded initiatives, 22 per cent said they plan to diversify into other commodities, and 12 per cent said they are specializing their operations. “Given Canadians do not associate farming with innovations, it isn’t surprising that in the federal government’s study Canadians found it difficult to name specific innovations occurring in the sector,” states the CFIB, which comments on the survey results in a report entitled Realities of Business in Canada – A Sector of Innovation and Growth. “CFIB agribusiness members provide numerous examples of specific innovative practices they have introduced in their businesses, such as robotic dairy milking, GPS tracking systems and genomic testing for livestock.” Eighty one per cent of survey respondents indicated they use the internet for information, products or services, while 59 per cent said they use public sector risk management tools. Fifty two per cent said they utilize industry training for themselves and their employees, while 51 per cent said they utilize external consulting services. Over 44 per cent indicated they plan to expand the size of their operation over the next three years (compared to 40 per cent in 2011). “There are fewer agribusiness owners reporting they plan to maintain their current status – 30 per cent compared to 40 per cent in 2011, and only 10 per cent of farmers are planning to downsize their operation,” states the CFIB. Twenty one per cent said they are planning to hire more employees in the next three years, whereas only nine per cent said they plan to reduce the number of employees. “The agriculture industry employs more than two million people, which is equal to one in eight jobs in Canada,” states the CFIB. “With more farmers planning on hiring and looking to expand their businesses, it is clear this is a growing industry
– one that provides Canadians with job opportunities and an industry to be proud of.” Sixty three per cent of the farmers surveyed said they are investing in equipment, machinery or vehicles that are more energy efficient or environmentally friendly, while 61 per cent said they are improving their management of hazardous products. Sixty per cent said they are protecting water sources and waterways and 56 per cent said they are adopting energy conservation practices. Forty three per cent said they have preserved forests, trees, green spaces and pasture, while 34 per cent said they have reduced their use of fossil fuels. “We shifted our calving to late spring,” said one CFIB livestock and animal farm member. “It allows us to utilize stockpiled grass for winter feed source and sharply reduce our reliance on machinery and fossil fuels. It also virtually eliminates confined livestock and greatly improves the natural nutrient and water cycle in our grassland. The result has been a significant reduction in our inputs, both cash and unpaid labour.” Of farmers who are planning to transfer their business in the next three years, 83 per cent said they are planning to transfer it to a family member. Fifteen per cent who plan to transfer their business within the next three years indicated they will transfer the farm to a non-family member, while two per cent said they will transfer to their business to both a family member and non family member. Top priorities of farmers for government action include an increased focus on regulatory reform (72 per cent) and reducing the total tax burden (66 per cent). Almost half (44 per cent) of farmers say an increased focus on industry research, development and innovation would also improve their competitiveness. CFIB is encouraged that, given the misconceptions that many Canadians have about the agriculture industry in Canada, that the many governments and agricultural organizations are undertaking various education initiatives. “Certainly, understanding Canadians’ misconceptions about agriculture is an important first step toward narrowing the disconnect they have with the sector,” says CFIB. “(The survey) provides the farmer’s voice in this important dialogue and sets a number of the misconceptions straight. Farmers in Canada are looking to innovate and grow their business, are taking steps to protect the environment, and are planning to pass their business on to their family when they retire.”

Celebrating the holidays in Kamifurano, Japan Brenda Knull, BRSD teacher
Did you know that almost every month on the Japanese calendar includes a national holiday? November 3 is one of those days. It’s known as Culture Day and is intended to promote the arts, culture, and academic achievements. It’s a day to promote culture and the love of freedom and peace. On this holiday, schools and the government award selected persons for their special, cultural achievements. On Nov. 3, 1946, the present Constitution of Japan was officially announced. To celebrate this event, the date was made into a holiday to display the ideals of the Constitution. Kamifurano held culture-related festivities from November 1-3. Over these three days you could view art created by members of the community and you could watch different types of performances. This year, on Nov. 1, there was a yard sale/craft sale in the recreation centre. Some people sold handmade items and others sold gently used trinkets. It was a great place for me to buy some figurines of my favourite Japanese characters. Locally grown fresh
A Japanese woman serves tea during a ceremony in Kamifurano Nov. 3
produce and foods such as ramen and French fries were for sale. Later in the day there were a series of performances held over four hours. The acts featured school bands and community groups. On Nov. 3, a variety of activities took place
throughout the day. At the start of the day there was a ceremony for honoured scholars and artists. The honoured ranged from junior high school students to elderly citizens. This ceremony was formal and Tomio Mukaiyama, Kamifurano’s mayor, gave out some of the
awards. Other prominent people from the community gave out recognitions. The way that each award was presented followed the same format. It was interesting to observe something that seemed like a time-honoured tradition. There were some hands-on activities available to try. These included being part of a tea ceremony and writing Japanese characters (called kanji) through the art of calligraphy. I participated in both activities and they were challenging and exciting. I felt like I was experiencing some true Japanese culture. The afternoon featured performances by members of the community. These included people singing karaoke and singing traditional songs with vocal groups. There were several dance performances featuring traditional dance to more modern ballet. There were other performances such as people playing Japanese musical instruments and some people using Japanese swords. It was a weekend filled with an extravaganza of culture. It was a great way to see how much talent is in Kamifurano. December is marked with a national holiday of it’s own known as The
Emperor’s Birthday. It is currently celebrated on Dec. 23. Emperor Akihito was born on this date in 1933. The birthday of the current emperor is always a national holiday. If the emperor changes, the national holiday changes to the birthday date of the new emperor. Akihito is the 125th emperor of Japan and he came to the throne in 1989. Japan’s emperor is considered a symbol of the state and of unity of the people of Japan. The emperor doesn’t have political powers relating to the government. He is limited to symbolic roles. On Dec. 23, a public ceremony takes place at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. On this day the gates of the palace are opened to the public. This occasion, as well as January 2, is the only time of the year when the general public may enter the inner grounds of the Imperial Palace. As far as what happens on this day in Kamifurano it is still a mystery to me. This will be my first full December here and I’m eager to see what happens on a local level. I’ve been living here for well over a year now and there is always something new to discover.

Establish spending limits
As the cost of living continues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much more expensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overextend themselves financially come the holiday season. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercussions for the rest of the year. In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch themselves thin on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. One way to make shopping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dictate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys. It is important to exercise tact when approaching the subject of gift limits. Discuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reasonable amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a figure and then determine the average, using that figure as your spending limit. Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to afford their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and you’re spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly. When no such limit is established, you may go overboard to compensate, even if you cannot afford to do so. Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts.
Merry Christmas Fund supports less fortunate with hampers By Murray Green
The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund was launched in 1965 to supply food hampers to less fortunate families in the community. Some things have changed through the years, but the need to provide food support hasn’t. Last year, the Merry Christmas Fund supplied 266 food hampers by raising just under $28,000. “Our goal this year is a little more than last year. We are estimating the number of hampers to be more than 275 and our target goal is to raise $29,000 to cover the cost of the food,” said public relations chair Dale Debnam. “We are hoping people will donate earlier this year because we would like to pay
for the food on Dec. 17 when it is delivered. We would like to know if we can pay for the groceries.” Donations can be made at the Royal Bank and at the Camrose Fire Department. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund is a registered charity, so people will be mailed a tax receipt during the first two weeks in January. The hampers are delivered to homes on Saturday, Dec. 20, in the morning. “We need volunteer delivery people and we are asking for volunteers to be in pairs to carry the food. We meet at the current Fire Hall starting at 9 a.m. to start delivering hampers,” said Dale. Organizers ask that not ever yone arrive
r ight at that time b e c au se volu nt e er s need space to help people load. “Thanks to the help of the Camrose Post Off ice, Purolator and the Rose City handivan trucks and vans, we are usually done by noon. The K nights of Columbus also help us on that day,” said Dale. “We always need help unpacking the food on Wednesday, then sorting it and putting it into boxes on Thursday prior to the delivery. We need help on Dec. 17 and 18, as well as delivering the hampers.” Dale agreed it is a good outing for families who want to expose their children to a way of getting them into the Christmas spirit and helping others.” The food hampers
are intended to provide a good Christmas meal and food for an entire day. “If someone wants to have a hamper delivered to them or a family, they have to register at the Neighbor-Aid Center,” said Dale. The number at the centre is 780-679-3220. “ T he com mu n ity has suppor ted this project for many years and we are thankful for that,” added Dale. “ We are looking for the community to come through for us again to make Christmas a little brighter for everyone.” Volunteers also help deliver toys packaged by the Kinette Club. “Some hampers will also have toys to deliver at the same address. The Kinettes sort and package the toys, the
Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club picks them up and drops them off to us and we send them out with the food ha mpers,” expla ined Dale. “If volunteers have a small vehicle we give them hampers without a lot of toys and those who have a larger vehicle can take more.” Enerplus Corporation and the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion started the fundraising campaign by donating $1,500 and $1,000. Coen family receives award for contributions to pollinator protection and conservation By Dan Jensen
The Takota Coen family from Ferintosh has been named recipient of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) Farmer Rancher Award (Canada) for significant contributions to pollinator protection, conservation, and issue outreach. “The work they have done has resulted increased awareness of the importance of pollinators and pollination within the agricultural community,” said news release from The Pollinator Partnership, the largest organization in the world dedicated to the protection and protection of pollinators and their ecosystems. Micheal, Laura, and Takota Coen have been practicing true sustainable farming since the late 1980s. Their “forest farm” mimics the local Aspen Parkland Biome, allowing them to work with nature rather than against it. Just as their native northern prairie was once interspersed with groves of poplars and roamed by herds of bison, the Coens’ pastures, full of cattle, are being planted to groves of fruit, nut and timber trees. These diversified landscapes are ideal areas where local wildlife, most notably the vastly important pollinator community, thrives. Not only do pollinators gain from the increased habitat and forage but the Coens’ pastures, livestock, and edible tree crops function symbiotically to benefit all the individual elements. “Taking the leap into fully sustainable perennial based agriculture can be risky, and transforming a landscape is costly,” said the NAPPC release. “This is where the Coens have taken the initiative to develop a community supported agricultural (CSA) approach whereby members of the community pay forward into the sustainable model of farming that in turn will provide them with pollinated foods in the years to come. In effect, the Coens have created a microcosm of agricultural support driven directly by the community. In a landscape where government support for sustainable agriculture and pollinator conservation is limited, Grass Roots Family Farm has lived up to its name, taking local initiative in
developing a model where producer and consumers work together protect our food production resources.” By working with organizations like the Slow Food’s Edmonton the Coens hope to help their community cultivate a meaningful connection to the land. Helping urbanites understand the farmto-table connection is vital if sustainable agriculture is to take hold. “The Coens’ outreach to the community and their work using permaculture design and agroforestry techniques that accommodated pollinators stood out among a field of applicants that are working to help keep pollinator services resilient across Canada,” said the NAPPC. The Coens’ achievements were celebrated at a VIP reception launch the 14th annual meeting of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) at the USDA Whitten Patio in Washington D.C. on Oct. 21. They shared the evening spotlight with the 2014 US FarmerRancher award winner Sam and Heidi Heikes of the Heikes Family Farm (Vermillion, South Dakota), who have also made use of community support agriculture to educate the public about the importance of pollinators in agriculture and with Tri-National Pollinator Advocate Award Winners Sustainable.TO (Canada), The American Bee Project (USA), and Dr. Pablo F. Jaramillo (Mexico). “Without pollinators we would lose one third of our diet, nearly all of our high-nutrient food, most terrestrial ecosystems would collapse, important plant species that provide the raw materials for medicines would die out, and the biosphere would stop filtering air and freshwater for us and other wildlife,” says NAPPC. “Factors such as uncontrolled development, agricultural intensification, chemical misuse, and pathogen introduction are decimating their populations.” The Canadian Farmer-Rancher Pollinator Award is supported and sponsored by Pollinator Partnership, The Canadian Federation of Agriculture, and The Canadian Forage and Grasslands Association.

Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson met with students Oct. 27.
Minister Olson meets with students at Augustana Campus On Monday, Oct. 27, the Hon. Verlyn Olson, MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, visited Dr. Varghese Manaloor’s AUECO 346 Agricultural Economics classroom. Fourth year Bachelor of Management in Economics student, Sarah Warwick from Hanna, reports: Minister Verlyn Olson, MLA for the WetaskwinCamrose constituency, spoke in Augustana’s Agricultural Economics class on Monday, Oct. 27. Olson discussed his responsibility and involvement as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. He also spoke on the importance and challenges of Agriculture in Alberta’s economy. Olson outlined his primary responsibilities, which included the planning, organization and operations of 295 Agricultural Societies. His division of responsibility also includes the communication with approximately 70 Agricultural Service Boards. Areas of focus that Minister Olson mentioned included crops, business and economics, food safety, livestock, food processing, rural services and trade. Olson stated that agriculture is the second largest industry in Alberta, next to the Oil and Gas Industry. He emphasized the importance of renewable resources, and we must strive to keep it the “heart and soul” of Alberta. Some challenges that Alberta faces is finding ways to add value to our resources. As a province, we must build a more complex and sophisticated economy that will help support and conserve our natural resources. Another challenge that Olson mentioned the department faces are trade barriers. Currently, there are specific trade concerns focusing in areas of health and labelling. These emerging regulations seem to be a dominant theme, and will soon be addressed by the WTO (World Trade Organization). Grain transportation was another challenge that Olson mentioned. He indicated that the Canadian Transportation Act is aiming to come up with a collective vision at both the provincial and federal level for future transportation. Many factors are considered in such a huge project including aspects of infrastructure, environment, information, operations, management, safety, health, efficiency, energy,
land, work, service and accessibility. The last issue that Olson addressed included labour. Due to the high competition in the oil and gas sector, and limitations in the Agricultural sector, the provincial and federal government must come up with solutions to provide jobs for our citizens. Olson’s closing statement suggested the establishment and growth initiative for industry and business development in rural Alberta. He encouraged the empowerment of environmental entrepreneurship and developing value-added opportunities. Second year Economics student, Cassandra Olsen from Ferintosh, reports: Our AUECO 346 Agricultural Economics class was fortunate enough to be able to have the Honourable Verlyn Olson join the class on Monday, Oct. 27. It was a very positive experience to be able to have Minister Olson share his personal experiences in politics and agriculture, as well as being able to hear about some of the issues the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta is having in regards to Rural Alberta and how they intend to solve these difficulties. Minister Olson has lived in Camrose and the Wetaskiwin area his entire life and has very deeprooted connections with the community. He and his three children attended Augustana Campus for their education, and Minister Olson only had positive comments to share about the campus and its progress, saying that the decision to merge with the University of Alberta, he feels, was a very positive decision for growth and sustainability. Spending his first two years at university here on campus, as well as being a former Viking hockey player, the minister had some very interesting personal stories that were shared. Mr. Olson went on to share with us how he got his start into Alberta and Canadian politics, first practicing as a successful lawyer in the area for over thirty years, and then finally running for office in the 2000 election, where he lost to Kevin Sorenson. However, this did not hinder his drive to get involved and he ran again in the 2008 provincial elections, and was successfully appointed Minister of Justice for the province when Alison Redford ran for Premier. Continued on page 23

Minister Olson meets with students at Augustana Campus Continued from page 22
The minister mentioned that this was a comfortable fit for him, having practiced law for so many years, and stated that the switch to becoming Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development has been “very time consuming, but very rewarding.” Minister Olson prides himself on establishing good connections with community members and had experience dealing with rural issues before as a practicing lawyer with clients from rural settings. The minister then talked about the difference between being a “backbencher” in parliament, and now being a part of the provincial cabinet. As a “backbencher” he feels he had more time to spend with his individual constituents, whereas, now being in the cabinet, there are more people higher up in parliament to please and he is finding it more challenging to spend as much time in constituencies as he spends much more time on the road. Olson presented himself as a community builder and he takes great pride in being someone who sits down, and makes lasting connections with the people of his constituencies. The minister also discussed with us what was actually under his portfolio including his responsibility for over 295 agricultural societies, rural electrification associations and rural gas co-ops, and more than seventy agriculture service boards. On top of this, Minister Olson is responsible for looking at the agricultural commodity industry in Alberta, including the production of such commodities as high value crops like dill and mint, monitoring supply-managed industry (quota restrictions) as well as irrigation of such crops. Minister Olson also shared some of the issues that his department is concerned with and some insight as to how he and his department intend to tackle these issues. One of the issues discussed pertained to trade barriers, especially amongst Canada and the United States regarding the
mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL) restrictions put on Canadian meat products by the United States. It was beneficial to hear some of the underlying facts about this issue. He also went on to mention a little bit about the Farm Bill being used to categorize which meats must be separated and labeled. Mr. Olson also talked a bit about the issues regarding slow grain transportation and the battles with CN and CP to speed up transport and make it more accessible to all Albertan farmers. Lastly, Minister Olson touched upon the very important Alberta labour shortage issue, which is becoming more and more prominent in the agricultural sector due to increased interest in the oil and gas industry. T h roughout the entire presentation, there was never an ill word spoken about any other members of parliament. Mr. Olson spoke very kindly about the new Premier Jim Prentice, and also about the “wonderful staff ” Mr. Olson has the pleasure of working with. He stressed the importance of making strong connections with the community and all of his constituents in order to promote a healthy, continually developing rural Alberta. He also mentioned that he feels that more respect needs to be brought into politics so that issues may be solved in a positive manner, and colleagues should always show respect to one another in order to bond as allies. Olson por trayed himself as a man genuinely concerned and committed to helping his community and all those within it. He was very pleasant to listen and to talk to, as well as very approachable. It was a very positive experience to be able to attend his presentation, for it was very enlightening as to the ways our government works and how it solves our issues as constituents. It was nice to hear a new perspective on some of these concerns, as well as it was amusing and educational to hear his life ex per iences a nd anecdotal tidbits and the perspective they had to offer.
