Laurel is a stay-athome mother of three young children as well as an assignment writer for The Camrose Booster.

A fourth generation Camrosian who returned to Camrose six years ago to start a family, she lives in a straw bale home built by her husband. Her grandparents purchased the family farm in 1928 and she feels a deep connection to the land.

Laurel was raised in Camrose and graduated from Camrose Composite High School before moving to southern Alberta to earn a journalism degree at Mount Royal College. She has worked as the editor of the Nanton News and as a reporter and photographer for the Okotoks Western Wheel. Her column Laurel Land in Nanton featured stories about her outdoor and other adventures.

Eager to see more of the world, Laurel and her husband sold their home in Okotoks, put all of their belongings into storage and set out travelling! They spent five months driving to Labrador and back in a blue camper van, then backpacked throughout Australia and Southeast Asia for six months before moving back “home” and setting down roots.

Homespun will have topics ranging from stories of her travels (always have a camera along in case you see a monkey riding on top of a dog), life lessons she’s learned, the struggle to survive (and enjoy) the chaos of raising young children, the experiments and adventures of gardening (what on earth do I use all of these zucchinis for?) and everything in between.

City goes over budget for snow removal

The City of Camrose received some relief with snow removal costs in the months of November and December.

“In November, I had estimated an over expenditure of $300,000 for the year depending on weather,” explained City infrastructure and planning general manager Wayne Franklin in a presentation to Camrose City council Jan. 5. “Mother Nature was fairly kind to us and our best estimate is an over expenditure at year-end of $143,000.

The City of Camrose had budgeted $703,139 for snow removal in 2014. As of Nov. 1 approximately $670,000 of that amount had already been spent.

The over-expenditure will be funded from the City of Camrose or surplus.

“We will evaluate that when we get the final figures,” said Mayor Norm Mayer.

The City of Camrose initiates snow plowing operations as soon as is warranted at the direction of either the director of public works or his delegate. Main routes (48 Avenue, Highways 13, 26, 833 and 53 Street/Parkview Drive from 48 Avenue to Camrose Drive), Camrose Drive, City Center Camrose and the Camrose Airport receive top priority, followed by arterial and collector roads leading to 48 Avenue and the central commercial areas, and finally, residential roads and lanes.

Snow clearing starts in different residential areas on a rotating basis throughout the winter so no one area consistently receives a higher priority. The practice is predicated to a large extent by wind direction and drifting conditions.

Don’t make it worse says Eggen

NDP MLA David Eggen landed into the provincial government last week, saying that planned cuts to public services will only worsen an existing situation and hurt Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Either Jim Prentice and the PCs are blind or they choose not to see what is really going on in our province,” said Eggen. “Public services are already under incredible stress and we haven’t even felt the impact of low oil prices at the ground level. Prentice’s push to cut services is not only responsible, it is naive and it’s Alberta’s most vulnerable families who will feel it the most.”

A report by the Edmonton Social Planning Council showed that one in eight Edmontonians are living in poverty, a number that has gone up since 2006, and that 19.5 per cent of the working people in Edmonton are earning less than $15 per hour.

Hawkins seeks council experience

Russell Hawkins is seeking a seat on the City of Camrose council to gain valuable experience prior to running for the position of mayor in the next election.

“I was narrowly defeated in the last election for mayor, so when this opportunity came up I thought about getting a seat at the table, or quit saying I want to be the mayor in the future,” said Russell.

“The experience would benefit me because I am going to run for mayor in the next election. I went into this (running for mayor) with no experience at all as far as how the meetings are run and knowing the inner workings of council.

By being on council and not at the head of the table, I can learn how it all runs, see the inner workings and get to know the City administration. When the next election comes around, it is a step up opposed to walking in blind.”

Russell owns Camrose Energy, a fast growing businesses within the city.

“I’m old enough to have some business experience, but not old enough to think the way I do things is the only way they should be done,” he said. “I still look

at young people and think I can learn something from them, instead of looking at them and thinking they should do what I tell them to do. I am open-minded and bring that to council.

I’ll look at all ideas and then figure which is the best one, as opposed going into meetings thinking this is the way it should be done.”

Russell’s goal is to find the best solutions for the city. “That solution may not be the one I thought it was,” he said. “I want to be a team player. I’m not going in saying this is what the City has to do. I want what is best for the majority of people in Camrose.”

The candidate thought about one of his favourite quotes. “We can’t solve the problems of the future with the thinking of the past. Just because we have always done something this way doesn’t mean it is the way we should do it now,” he added. “When I built houses, with each one I tried to build it better than the last. Sometimes people tell me it is too expensive and they have never done it. I like to think outside the box and make things better.”

The provincial threat of reducing funding because of falling oil prices could mean less funding in the future for municipalities.

“Oil prices have fallen and gone up before. There might be a project that has to wait a little longer until the funding is available.

It is not like it has to wait indefinitely. Camrose is in a unique economic position because we are not dependant on oil. We are in an agricultural area and people are still going to need to eat.”

Russell believes that less funding will be an inconvenience, rather than a hardship.

“Council has to look

at what is most important and make hard decisions.

However, we have a new canola crushing plant going in. That gives us lots of opportunity to bring in value added products and make use of the by-product and canola oil. That can be shipped away, or we can make use of it right here.

I can’t even imagine the opportunities that come with a new plant here. I’m optimistic.”

New agricultural opportunities are right at our back door, he suggested.

“I think the current council has a lot of diversity and is doing a good job on keeping the finances on track. The city is in good shape. I want to help council continue in that direction and gain experience.”

Three Camrose residents are vying for one seat on council. Ina Nielsen, Dave Ofrim and Russell Hawkins all agreed to let their name stand on Nomination Day on Jan. 13.

Camrose residents will be voting on Feb. 10 (along with advance polls) to determine who will fill the seat on council. The councilor position became vacant with the passing of Ray McIsaac.

Grateful Grannies celebrate anniversary and milestone

A small group of grandmothers and grand“others” gathered in January 2010 in Armena to discuss if they should form a group to support the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, an initiative of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The campaign raises awareness and funds for African grandmothers who are the primary caregivers for a large number of children left orphaned and vulnerable by HIV/ AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. That evening, the answer was a resounding “Yes!” and the Grateful Grannies had their start.

This group is one of more than 240 dynamic and responsive grandmother groups which have formed across Canada. From that beginning, the Grateful Grannies have had much success. Mardell Olson, current chair of the group said, “I doubt that any of us in attendance in 2010 would have predicted that within five short years we would have attracted over 100 members. Together with the wonderful support from our communities, our members have raised well over $100,000. We think this success deserves a celebration!”

Anniversary Celebration will be held at the Chapel at the Augustana Faith and Life Centre from 2 to 4 pm on Sunday, Jan. 25.

The afternoon program will include the showing of a new film, a question and answer session, and some time to socialize over hot cider and cookies and to reflect on past successes.

The celebration will feature a screening of the new Stephen Lewis Foundation film entitled, “African Grandmothers Tribunal: Seeking Justice at the Frontlines of the AIDS Crisis.” Laurie Moffit Barr,

a member of the celebration planning committee said, “The 40 minute documentary highlights the HIV/AIDS crisis from the African grandmothers’ perspectives. This moving film is sure to stir the audience’s emotions about the on- going HIV/ AIDS epidemic in Africa.”

The film demonstrates the urgent need to provide better protection for the human rights of African grandmothers. These grandmothers are the primary caregivers for a large number of orphaned children, but their abil-

ity to care for these children, and for themselves, is greatly compromised by the effects of gender and age-based discrimination. They are subject to high rates of violence, an epidemic of property grabbing, extreme poverty, and woefully inadequate healthcare.

Following the film, there will be a question and answer with a representative from the Stephen Lewis Foundation who will have an in-depth knowledge of the work of the projects, as well as knowledge

of the themes presented in the documentary.

The Grateful Grannies will recognize the multitude of members and people in Camrose and area for their support in reaching the amazing fundraising milestone of $100,000. Supporters have purchased AIDS Angels, cards, Valentine’s cookies, attended the Grateful Grannies Christmas Markets and “Granny Glam” sales, donated to fabric sales, participated in annual walks, attended annual gatherings and encouraged the work of the Grateful Grannies.

Everyone is welcome to come to the celebration on Sunday, Jan. 25. Mardell Olson said, “We will recognize our members and communities for their great support and hope you will accept our invitation to help us raise the next $100,000. Battle River Community Foundation director David Ofrim presented a cheque to Susan Campbell and Clay Creasy, both of whom are Grade 9 to 12 teachers at Hughenden School.

The Battle River Community Foundation has made a grant to the Hughenden School from the David Creasy Memorial Fund.

The David Creasy Memorial Fund was created in 2007 as a donor advised fund. Each year, the fund donor provides the Foundation with a recommendation

for distribution of grants from the fund. The Foundation board then considers the recommendations.

This year, grants from the David Creasy memorial Fund were given to the Hughenen, Amisk and Brownfield Schools and the Hardisty General Hospital Guild.

River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

The new curb bulb-outs on Grand Park Crescent have achieved their desired effect.

City director of engineering Jeremy Enarson told Camrose City council in a Jan. 5 report that the bulbs have helped to reduce relative traffic volumes on the road by 12 per cent from what they were last July to less than 600 vehicles per day.

“Administration has concluded that the curb bulb-outs installed by the City were effective at reducing traffic along Grand Park Crescent,” said Enarson.

“The City will be able to confirm this conclusion by analyzing the results of traffic flows completed in future years as part of its regular traffic counting program.”

Curb bulb-outs prove to be a success in Grand Park Crescent

installed the bulb-outs as part of the summer reconstruction of Grand Park Crescent after area residents expressed concern about the amount of non-local traffic moving through the area.

Margaret Rathnavalu told council July 21 that Grand Park Crescent is approaching the acceptable maximum vehicles for a local residential street and that traffic has become an increasingly present concern for residents.

“It seems appropriate to propose a one-way street now as it would be a proactive measure and comes at a time when major renovations to our street are being completed,” said Rathnavalu. “The City’s decision will influence the type of growth that the city is facing and the value of retaining quiet residential areas.”

Administration feels

that converting Grand Park Crescent into a one-way street would cause a reduction in convenience to residents, in particular to those without rear lane access to their properties.

“In some cases a simple return trip may be increased by as much as one km (the distance to drive around the block bounded by Grand Park Crescent, 48 Avenue and Grand Drive),” said Enarson.

Administration also feels that the conversion of Grand Park Crescent into a one-way roadway may actually lead to increased vehicle speeds through the area and cause additional delays at either the intersection of Grand Park Crescent and 48 Avenue, or at the intersection of Grand Park Crescent and Grand Drive.

“By restricting the flow of traffic to only one direction the middle section of the roadway would no longer be shared by opposing vehicles, result-

ing in a travel lane width that is comparable to what the City uses on its major collector and arterial roads. Traffic planners and engineers commonly recommend that one-way streets be converted into two-way streets as one option to reduce vehicle speeds along roadways.

The bulb-outs were financed 100 per cent

by Grand Park Crescent properties located between 48 B Avenue and Grand Drive.

“The incremental cost of the four bulb-out locations (two at either

The City of Camrose has an ongoing traffic counting program, which gathers information from a variety of key locations around the city. Whereas some of the busier locations in the city are

counted on an annual basis (such as along 48 Avenue), other locations such as Grand Drive and Grand Park Crescent are counted on a bi-annual basis.

The majority of intersections within the city are not included in the ongoing traffic counting program due to the relative lack of traffic on the adjacent roadways.

by Bonnie Hutchinson Take two steps and call me in the morning Scene: A cold Friday morning at 5:42 a.m., Lions Bay, B.C. So here I am, standing outside in pitch dark, at the top of a steep driveway. The icy rain makes the driveway slippery so I’m opting to take the stairs along the side, hoping my feet will be able to feel the edge of each

step.

I am carrying a large garbage can in front of me.

Though I can’t see it in the dark, I know the driveway has a sharp U-turn in the middle. I don’t know if the stairs continue on past the driveway’s sharp U-turn and down to the road far below.

I peer over the side. Pitch black. I can’t see the driveway or the road far below, just blackness.

Did I mention I have never fully overcome my childhood fear of the dark? As an adult, I can reason myself out of terror, slow down my pounding heart and dissolve the anxiety knot in my stomach, but when I’m in darkness, I almost never quite get past uneasiness.

I have looked everywhere and tried all the light switches in the house and garage, but I cannot find a way to light up the driveway.

So. Decision.

I can continue on in the dark, try to feel my way to the bottom of the driveway, place the garbage can by the curb for pick-up and climb back up the steep driveway to the house. Or I can wait a couple of hours until daylight and possibly miss the garbage truck.

The instructions from the home’s owner are clear.

Garbage containers are to be placed by the curb on the road far below on Friday morning, sometime after 5 a.m.

Do not leave garbage outdoors on the evening before pick-up because of the wild life.

As a diligent short-term tenant, here for a six-day private writing retreat, I want to do the right thing.

Again I peer over the side into the blackness. After a long while, I think maybe I can sort of see a hint of the shape of the driveway.

I decide to take the first step. I slide one foot forward to the edge of the step and let my heel feel its way to the step below. While I’m still holding the garbage can, my other foot slides to the edge and steps down too.

I pause to balance. Again peer over the edge. Still just as black. Slide a foot forward again, find the second step and follow with the other foot. Scary, but so far so good. I wonder how many other steps it will take.

Again, I slide a foot forward, find the edge, and let my heel find its way to the third step. As my other foot slides forward and over the edge, I am flooded with light.

Wow! The light is coming from my left – apparently from a floodlight that is sensitive to motion. I can now see to the bottom of the driveway.

I am so glad I decided to take a few steps.

The incident becomes my metaphor of the day.

In times of confusion or turmoil, when we don’t know what’s ahead and maybe don’t even know where we are, we can take one step – whatever step is in front of us.

And then another. And trust that – suddenly or gradually – we will see light.

Lost gift card On Friday or Saturday, someone who attended Walmart here in town had purchased a gift card for someone. It was likely a gift for someone special. Despite a 500 year truce this is the renewal of a 1,400 year old war. A war that the Jihadists will lose.

The only voice of reason is that of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi who, in a speech given Dec. 28, called on Muslim leaders to fight against extremism. “Is it possible that 1.6 billion people [Muslims] should want to kill the rest of the world’s inhabitants – that is seven billion – so that they themselves may live? Impossible! […] I say and repeat, again, that we are in need of a religious revolution. You imams are responsible before Allah.

The entire world is waiting on you. The entire world is waiting for your word … because the Islamic world is being torn, it is being destroyed, it is being lost.

And it is being lost by our own hands.”

President el-Sisi, former Director of Military Intelligence, former Commander in Chief and former Minister of Defence and Military Production, knows better than most that the radicals are kicking a sleeping lion.

The lion may be weak and sick but when it wakes up it will crush the mythical Caliphate with one paw.

Our sickness is the leftist reporters, politicians, and intellectuals who spend their time tearing down the institutions which made

Western Civilization. The magazine which so enraged the Jihadists, Charlie Hebdo, is part of the problem.

They were nothing less than nihilistic anarchists, believing in nothing, trashing everything. They blaspheme because, for the nihilist, nothing is sacred, not even the free speech they debased with their depraved cartoons.

And our ‘brave’ Western elites? Those ‘paragons of virtue’ who defend every depravity and defame the true and good? They carry signs saying “Jes suis Charlie” and caution us not to overreact. Well, in that sense they are Charlie, vipers, warmed by very bosom they bite. Like the anti-police protestors in LA who called 911 for help, they seek safety in the arms of the civilization they destroy.

I think Malcolm Muggeridge said it best: “Thus did Western Man decide to abolish himself, […] blowing the trumpet that brought the walls of his own city tumbling down, and having convinced himself that he was too numerous, labored with pill and scalpel and syringe to make himself fewer. Until at last, having educated himself into imbecility, and polluted and drugged himself into stupefaction, he keeled over – a weary, battered old brontosaurus – and became extinct.”

The only one exercising courage and free speech is President el-Sisi, and, if we do not support him, he will probably pay for it with his life.

R&D Hot Tubs brings home major awards

R&D Hot Tubs received two early Christmas presents at Hydropool’s 35th world conference in Toronto Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.

The Russ and Doneal Greipl-owned business at 3843F-44 Avenue, Camrose, was named winner of Hydropool’s Platinum award for excellence in marketing, sales and customer service, as well as the Gary Thibert award for highest percentage sales increase over the previous year, growth in the ability to excel in any circumstance, store presentation, sales training and customer service.

“It was the second year in a row that we won both awards,” said Doneal.

R&D was one of 22 Hydropool dealerships out of 250 across North America that were nominated for the Platinum award and one of 10 nominated for the Gary Thibert award.

“The Gary Thibert award was shared by us and another dealership in Ontario,” said Doneal. “It was the first time there had ever been a tie in all the

years they have presented the award.”

The awards say a lot about how R&D stacks up against other Hydropool dealers, many of which are in cities much larger than Camrose.

“It takes a lot of hard work to receive something like this,” said Doneal. “You have to maintain strong service levels and keep the store at the level that Hydropool wants it to be. We receive visits three or four times by our regional district manager and twice a year by the Canadian manager, who handles all the Hydropool dealers across the country, so they do check in on us.”

The Griepls were quick to credit the work of a strong and dedicated staff for R&D’s success.

“Our two full-time service techs and our one part-time front end girl had a lot to do with us winning the awards because we can’t do it all ourselves,” said Doneal.

“We depend on our staff to uphold the level of service that we want.”

BRSD confirms Rita Marler as new Superintendent Battle River School Division is pleased to announce the selection of Mrs. Rita Marler as superintendent of schools.

Mrs. Marler has a long history with BRSD, having served 25 years as a teacher and school administrator prior to taking on the role of division principal in March of 2014 and assuming the duties of deputy superintendent/acting superintendent last September.

“Rita is well known and respected throughout Battle River,” says Kendall Severson, chair of the BRSD board of trustees. “We believe that Rita’s experience, her focus on relationships, and her collaborative nature will be great assets as we work together to meet student needs.

“It was important to the board that we receive the input of staff, parents and the community as we went

through the recruitment process for our new superintendent of schools. That feedback was exceptionally valuable in guiding our decision-making.”

Mrs. Marler has a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. She is excited about leading Battle River into the future by blending the division’s past work with the vision of Inspiring Education to ensure there is high quality teaching and

learning in place to meet the diverse needs of students.

“I believe Battle River School Division provides excellent opportunities for students in our rural setting.

New Superintendent of Schools will focus on building strong relationships Feels government needs to take a different approach when it comes to funding rural schools

Battle River School Division superintendent Rita Marler will be working to strengthen relationships in 2015.

“It is no secret (student) assessment was an issue here and that people were starting to disconnect because of that,” said Marler. “We weren’t really melding as a cohesive group of students, parents, teachers, employees and communities. We want to get that back to where we are all focused on doing the best thing for the students.”

Marler and BRSD board of trustees chair Kendall Severson, along with BRSD’s zone four partners, had the opportunity to meet with the education minister Feb. 5 to discuss the need for sustained and predictable provincial funding over the next three or more years, as well as the high cost of transporting rural students to school and back home again. They noted that the disappearance of the fuel subsidy has created major problems in BRSD, where the school buses – which operate on diesel fuel (50 cents per litre more than gasoline) have to travel 2.1 million km in the course of the school year.

“It is difficult to find ways to reduce our transportation costs,” said Marler. “The cost of fuel is horrendous.”

While she is encouraged by the fact that the enrollment in BRSD schools is increasing at the lower kindergarten

and Grade 1 and 2 levels after years of decline, Marler feels that the government needs to change the way it funds rural schools as opposed to urban ones, so that it is not based simply on student population.

“We would really like the government to look at funding rural school boards based on need rather than student numbers,” she said, adding that a motion to change the way rural schools are funded was defeated by the urban school boards at a meeting of the Alberta School Boards Association in November. “If they (government) really want the rural boards to provide the quality of education that other students in the province receive then they need to start looking at doing things differently.”

Marler said the BRSD is close to being able to call for tenders for the replacement of the nearly 100-year-old school at Bashaw.

“There is a little discrepancy right now between what the project is looking like it is going to cost as opposed to what was first budgeted, so we are trying to work that out.”

Marler commended the Bashaw community for working hard to raise funds to increase the size of the school’s gymnasium.

“We only get a certain size per room, as mandated by infrastructure and Alberta Education, and we can only adjust those room sizes by 10 per cent,” she said. “Adding 10 per cent to the gymnasium will not make it viable for a rural setting because of the many things that go on there. She and her husband Dan have two teenage daughters who are students at Bawlf School.

Mrs. Marler commenced her new role effective January 1, 2015.

Marler said the BRSD will be meeting in the near future with Augustana administration to update the existing Memorandum of Understanding, under which they have agreed to work together to serve all students – whether they be in elementary, junior high school, high school or university – through things like practicum placements, reading programs, research projects, science and career fairs or Reading University.

“We want to make sure that we are covering all the areas that we can and are able to enhance the things that we already do, like offering a diploma prep course.

They (Augustana) are very cognizant of the need to work with us carefully so that they don’t overstep what we do and that we can work together. They are wanting to create a

welcoming environment for the entire community not just for the students who are there. They want to make everyone feel like they are welcome on campus.”

Marler believes the students in BRSD are more than holding their ow n w it h students from other parts of the province when it comes to academic achievements.

“We have always been successful in terms of provincial standards, but there is always room for improvement and that is our goal,” she said. “We will continue to monitor how we do and implement strateg ies and prog rams that help our students because that is why we are here. In my mind we don’t intend to add a whole bunch of initiatives. We want to focus on teaching them and achieving the best standards we can.”

The talents of Charlie Killam students will be on display at the school’s first Fine Arts Soiree tomorrow night (Jan. 21).

“It’s going to be an opportunity to showcase the different fine arts in which our students are involved,” explained Charlie Killam vice-principal Laura Swanson.

“We’re going to have band ensemble performances, a few drama skits and a display of art work.”

A silent auction of student stained art pieces will help raise money for the Grade 6 ranch camp.

The soiree will get underway at 7 p.m. with 15 to 20 minutes of drama productions

by Grade 7 students.

“The drama teacher is going to be directing different groups each with about four or five students, some of whom have never before performed in front of an audience,” said Swanson.

A 30-minute break that follows will provide the opportunity to view the art work by more than 200 students from Grades 6 to 8, enjoy coffee and desserts courtesy of the Lefse House and listen to music by the band ensembles that will be set up in different parts of the gymnasium.

The final 15 to 20 minutes will again be devoted to drama.

Charlie Killam School is proud of the abilities of all its arts students.

“We have some very amazing and creative individuals,” said Swanson. We wanted to showcase all the arts programs here at the school.”

Twenty-ninth Canadian Bull Congress this weekend

By Dan Jensen The 29th annual Canadian Bull Congress at Camrose Regional Exhibition is only days away.

“We’re going to have another full house with around 250 livestock exhibitors and product and servicerelated businesses coming from as far away as Saskatchewan and Manitoba,” said Canadian Bull Congress committee chair Dave Vikse.

The Canadian Bull Congress is regarded by many Canadian cattle producers as one of the must-attend events of the year.

“If you are a cattle producer and you want to see the best genetics in Canada then the congress is the place to be,” said Vikse. “You’re going to have the chance to see cattle that won at the big shows earlier this year, as well as meet with several breeders in the area.”

New event A new event at this year’s Canadian Bull Congress will be the Mature Bull Show on Jan. 24.

“It is going to be pretty cool to see the great big monster bulls that are six to ten years or age or more walking around in the show ring,” said Vikse. “Normally bulls that are three years of age or older never get the chance to be shown, which to me is too bad.”

The Herd Bull Walk, Single Purebred Heifer, 4-H Heifer Project, 4-H Showmanship Class and Celebrity Sponsor shows will get underway at 1 p.m. on Jan. 23.

“The Celebrity Sponsor show is something we started last year as a way of recognizing the sponsors,” explained Vikse. “We gave people like Mayor Norm Mayer, County Reeve Don Gregorwich and Jackie Rae

The Ranchers’ Choice Single Bull Show will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 24, followed at 2 p.m. by the Pen of Three, Senior Bull and Mature Bull shows.

The shows are a good opportunity for producers to let others know what they have.

“If potential buyers see something they like they will be able to hunt up the person who is showing that animal or attend his or her private sale,” said Vikse. “A lot of people go to the farms to look at the different herds once the Canadian Bull Congress is over.”

The Canadian Bull Congress has never had anyone win the $10,000 Triple Crown Award, which goes to an exhibitor whohas the Grand Champion in Ranchers’ Choice, Pen of Three Bulls and Single Purebred Heifer shows and/or Senior Bull and/or Mature Bull.

“There are five ways you can win it,” said Vikse. “People like myself have come close but have never actually won it.”

The Canadian Bull Congress Bullnanza will offer the chance to win a bull valued at $7,500 (no cash-inlieu option).

Breakfasts Camrose County will be sponsoring an exhibitor’s breakfast from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Jan. 23, while the City of Camrose will be sponsoring a commercial cattleman’s breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Jan. 24.

“We are seeing a lot of demand for our cattle right now,” said Vikse. “I like to compare the cattle we have in Western Canada to the Canadian hockey teams. If you are a Canadian cattle

producer you are at the top of the game.”

The Canadian Bull Congress hosted inbound missions of producers and stakeholders from Ireland and Denmark in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

“As a result, a renewed and strengthened interest has been made in Alberta/Canadian cattle and this has resulted in the purchase of Alberta/ Canadian genetics,” says the Canadian Bull Congress website. “The goal of the Canadian Bull Congress is continued participation in both inbound and outbound internationally marketing opportunities.”

Education program The pre-congress School

Education program on Jan. 21 is expected to draw more than 660 children from 16 Camrose and area schools, up from approximately 300 a year ago.

“The program allows the kids, who have never been close to a farm animal, to see what agriculture is like,” said Vikse. “It has proven to be so popular that some people are talking about doing a similar show for adults.”

The annual 4-H program on Jan. 24 will provide instruction on judging beef heifers, the relationship of form to function in different species and animal welfare.

School education program enjoys solid growth

Battle River School Division Grade 3 and 4 students will receive a crash course on agriculture at the Canadian Bull Congress school education program this Wednesday.

“We going to have a lot of interactive and informative presentations that should make for a fun and interesting day and help them (students) understand the connections between the city and the farm,” explained Camrose Regional Exhibition general manager Chuck Erman.

Students will have the chance to view the calf birthing process, talk with veterinarians about animal health issues, bid and catch bids in a simulated auction, brand animals with hands that have been dipped in coloured paint, learn about pipelines, have fun petting the animals

“We have a computerized holstein that we bought from a U.S. company that tells the students if they are milking properly,” said Erman. “It is neat because they are actually able to fill up a cannister.”

Students will also have the chance to visit with members of the Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame, who will show them some of the specialized riggings they use for riding bulls, as well as saddles that are used in saddle bronc competitions.

“They rodeo people are

going to talk about what it is like to be on the rodeo circuit and how they are able to balance rodeo with their day to day life on the farm,” said Erman. “They are going to add a lot of history and perspective because a lot of the rodeo people in Alberta are ranchers and farmers.”

Alberta Pork, Alberta Milk and Alberta Chicken will present the students with bags of information containing information from different producers and agriculture-related businesses, while the Battle River Rural Crime Watch program will be showing off its new Facebook site.

The school education program will have more than double the number of participants in 2015 that it had a year ago.

“We have 660 students, chaperones and other attendees from compared to just

over 300 a year ago,” said Erman. “Battle River School Division did quite a bit of the work in getting the word out to the different schools because they saw in the past how much fun the students were having and how much they were learning. Students actually get to see where their food comes from and that animals sometimes get sick, just like we do.”

Camrose Regional Exhibition and the Canadian Bull Congress plan to expand the educational program into a two-day event featuring even more agriculture producers in 2016.

“We are going to give the schools the option of which day they want to attend, whether it be Tuesday or Wednesday,” said Erman, “and then open it to the general public in the evening. We don’t want anybody to not have the experience.”

Jimmy The Janitor

Comedian Jimmy The Janitor will be cleaning up the laughter at the Canadian Bull Congress during the Taste of Beef Banquet on Friday, Jan. 23.

Jimmy is a stand-up comedy character created by broadcaster Sandy Gillis in 1987. He is the best of Maritime Canadian Comedy, rolled up into a colourful character. He has been called the Dean of Dust, the Squire of the Squeegee, the CEO of CLR, but mostly he’s been called to entertain audiences across Canada and the United States.

Gillis, or Jimmy if you prefer, is from Cape Breton.

After 25 years in broadcasting he retired as partner and an operating director of the Maritime Broadcasting System to pursue his “funny business” as comedian Jimmy the Janitor.

The jovial janitor has a successful nationally syndicated radio show, many comedy appearances on CBC Radio-TV and the Comedy Network, is a founding member of Late Night Live, the Hub Cap Comedy Review, has one movie under his belt, was a principal player in the television series Daring and Grace and performs at various conferences and theatres.

Jimmy the Janitor now has 10 comedy CD’s with more on the way. His daily morning show comedy feature called Jimmy Live is heard in over 65 radio markets every day, from Cape Breton to Yellowknife.

Currently Sandy owns GO Radio, a radio commercial production house and GO 4 Laughs, a comedy company that directs the comedic life of Jimmy the Janitor and the syndicated radio show called Jimmy the Janitor Live.

Jimmy’s brand of good clean Maritime fun is welcomed by audiences from all walks of life and demographics. His live performances touch on the personalities and funny situations in the Maritimes and are shows he claims he can bring his parents to.

Vikings drop two straight to SAIT Trojans

The first place SAIT Trojans in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference handed the Augustana Vikings 1-0 and 5-3 losses on Jan. 9 and 10.

Augustana played a solid game in Camrose, but SAIT kept pace with them and scored once on goalie Joel Danyluk during a power play to make the difference and earn the two points. Danyluk stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced.

In Calgary, the SAIT offence heated up with three goals in the middle frame to record the victory. Scott Swiston scored twice and assisted on Corey Kosloski’s tally. He was the best Augustana player on the ice.

Goalie Danyluk turned away 27 out of 32 shots, while the Vikings fired 33 at the SAIT cage.

The Vikings host the Portage Voyageurs on Jan. 24 at the EnCana Arena starting at 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball Concordia Thunder will provide the first home opposition in the second half on Jan. 23 with women’s action beginning at 6 p.m. and the men’s contest serving at 8 p.m.

The ACAC men’s championships will be held in Camrose on Feb. 26 to 28.

Basketball The basketball teams are home against the Concordia Thunder on Jan. 24 at 6 and 8 p.m. at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus Gym. Curling The winter regional is slated for Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 and is hosted by MacEwan University in Edmonton for women’s, men’s and mixed curling.

A second curling regional will be held at the Rose City Curing Club in Camrose from Feb. 6 to 8. The fall regional in Red Deer was postponed due to poor road conditions.

Biathlon The Vikings will be hosting a Calforex Cup meet at the Camrose Biathlon Range on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.

Cross-country skiing An Alberta Cup Race will be held at the Stoney Creek Centre on Feb. 7 and 8. The annual Ole Uffda Loppet is scheduled for Feb. 21.

Alexander John Staldeker April 9, 1928 - January 12, 2015 Alex Staldeker was born on April 9, 1928 in Major, SK. Dad passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 12, 2015.

He moved to Macklin, SK when he was seven years old where he farmed with his family. In 1939, the family moved to North Battleford to continue farming. While living in North Battleford, Dad and his brother Joe were instructed to clean/clear up the land. Dad and Joe thought it would be quicker and easier if they burned it. The fire took off and came very close to the mental hospital – thankfully the fire burned itself out prior to a major catastrophe (nearby farmers were not too impressed with these two).

In 1945, the family moved to Rosalind, AB to continue farming.

In 1949, Dad relocated to Toronto, ON to take a course in radio and TV arts. The college closed and Dad had to quit. There, he worked at a bakery while in school.

Dad then moved back to Alberta and settled in Camrose. He worked at Schnell and Barrie for a while in Camrose. This is where he found the love of his life, Joyce Kupec – his future wife. They married in 1954 and, over the course of their 60-year marriage, they raised four sons – Chris, Brian, Tim, and Rob. Dad worked in the automotive industry with various companies until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed bowling, cards, puzzles, collecting coins, making things with wood, and making farm machinery (from memory). His hands were always busy doing something. Dad liked a challenge and it seemed there was nothing he couldn’t fix.

He loved his family and grandkids dearly, and will be sadly missed.

A Prayer Vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015 from Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2015 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. A private interment has taken place at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose.

Bo Ludvig Arvidsson Bo Ludvig Arvidsson was born in Skanor, Sweden on April 4, 1936 to Arvid and Lilly Larsson, the oldest of five children. He attended agricultural college and began farming in 1964. He was a successful farmer and businessman in Smaland and in Oland, Sweden. It was here that he started his first family and his oldest three children were born.

In 1977, Bo immigrated to Canada, settling in the Camrose area where he was embraced by the local Swedish and farming communities. In 1994, Bo married Gwen Stuckey and added four more children to his family. Bo’s love of farming has been passed along to the next generation.

Bo remained close to his family in Sweden. He had the capacity for deep and lasting friendships and made many friends throughout Canada and the United States.

Bo passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at the age of 78 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Gwen; his children and grandchildren Christina (Alan) Arvidsson-Kupchenko and daughters Jenna, Jodie and Amy of Two Hills; Per (Maureen Grundberg) and sons Erik and Andrew of Camrose; Evva Kadioglu and son Ozgur of Kalmar, Sweden; JoAnn and BJ of Camrose; stepsons Kyle Stuckey of Ohaton and Christopher (Katrina) Stuckey of Camrose; his brothers Bert (Majborg) and Jan (Brita); and sisters Gun (Wollmar) Einald and Ulla Eidstedt and numerous nieces and nephews, all of Sweden. Bo was predeceased by his parents and brothers-in-law Arnold Eidstedt of Sweden and Sheldon Stuckey of Camrose.

Special thanks go to the dedicated and caring staff at Memory Lane, Sunrise Village, St. Mary’s Hospital and especially Louise Jensen Care Centre for the attention Bo received during his last years and for their caring support of family.

A Funeral Service was held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 from Camrose Church of God with Rev. Brian Krushel officiating. Interment has taken place in the Parkland Cemetery.

Judging workshop teaches youth decision making

With an impressive increase of 30 participants when the event began in the early 1990s to 240 this year, the 4-H Club’s upcoming judging workshop will help youth learn to make decisions in all aspects of their lives.

Members from 40 clubs across Alberta will take part in the workshop at the Canadian Bull Congress at the CRE on Jan. 24. Over 50 volunteers will help with the event, where participants learn how to decide which traits are most important in different species and then to judge the animals.

Charlie Gould, a workshop organizer and Canadian Bull Congress committee member, said they thought it was an event that would die out after a few years, but instead it’s only been growing.

“It’s a great program. We’ve had positive response and feedback,” Gould said.

and Bawlf, will speak to the senior group of participants about the draft horse division.

A former member of the Bawlf 4-H Club, Gordeyko has worked with Clydesdale horses for over 40 years and will also speak about the Percheron, Belgian and Shire breeds.

“I’ll explain to them the basics of overall balance, conformation, the importance of good feet and legs,” Gordeyko said. “It’s to inform these young people what we’re looking for in a draft horse because a lot of them haven’t been exposed to them.”

He noted that draft

horses were previously used in fields and producers looked for a thick, short animal with strong pulling power.

Today, these horses are used as a hobby animal to show or to breed.

The workshop participants will be divided into junior, intermediate and senior. The junior group, with over 100 participants between the ages of nine and 11, will receive a basic introduction to judging animals and learn how to prioritize and organize.

They will work through seven stations and judge animals such as guinea pigs, hedgehogs, budgies and a heifer calf.

Gould said they will learn which trait is the most important to watch for in different animals and that the skills they learn can translate to other reallife decisions such as choosing which blue jeans to purchase.

The intermediate group, with over 70 participants between the ages of 12 and 14, learn the form and function of various species of animals. They will learn why dairy and beef cat-

tle are built how they are and similarities.

Participants will also be expected to explain their reasons orally.

The senior group, with over 60 participants between the ages of 15 and 20, will perform a hands on judging of three species. This year those species will be light horse, heavy draft horse and beef heifer. The participants will be taken to a riding arena and will inspect four animals of each species.

Gould said that the experience will be an asset especially to members intending to continue in the livestock industry.

“They need to practice picking what kind of animal to raise,” Gould said, adding that the workshop also prepares members for a 4-H career or events such as multi-species judging competitions, Denver Stock Show and Montana Agribition.

Club members can also take part in the third annual Scavenger Hunt in the display area in the afternoon on Jan. 24.

Showmanship class added to 4-H Heifer Show

A Showmanship Class will be included for the first time this year in the 4-H Heifer Show at the Canadian Bull Congress in Camrose.

All participants in the Heifer Show will be entered into the category automatically and judged throughout the show, held on Friday, Jan. 23, at the CRE. “Showmanship is a very important thing in the 4-H competitions,” said Charlie Gould, a Canadian Bull Congress committee member.

“Most shows across Canada in the junior program have a Showmanship Class and so we thought it was something we should add.”

A panel of three will watch for eye contact with the judges, how participants handle their showstick and show courtesy to the other members.

“I think the kids are excited about it because showmanship is a big thing,” Gould said. “It encourages the kids to sharpen up on their showmanship.”

The prizes for the new category are hoodies as well as $100 for first place and $50 for second place.

The annual Heifer Show will provide exposure for club members as well as valuable life skills such as problemsolving, time management and public speaking.

The participants, ages nine to 20 years old, will each compete with a one-year-old heifer ranging in size from 700 to 900 pounds. The heifers will be judged on their potential of becoming a milk producer and breeding cow, as well as the frame of the animal, correctness in structure, legs and feet.

About 25 club members will take part this year. The Heifer Show will be a warm up for Club Achievement Days in the spring, as well as the Provincial Heifer Show in the summer. Many members will go on to compete at vari-

ous breed association summer shows.

“It’s to give the young members an opportunity to display their 4-H projects,” Gould said. “They’re the future cattle producers of our industry.”

Bashaw 4-H Club member Colin Fankhanel, 15, was named the reserve champion in 2012 and will compete in the event for the third time this year.

“Every year you learn something different in terms of showing, how to show the animal properly and showmanship,” Fankhanel said.

Fankhanel chose the heifer Corner Coulee Elisa Mae from over 10 heifers, and said he looked for good body shape, hair and genetics.

He said that the key to success at the Heifer Show is having a heifer with the right body size as well as proper clipping. The heifers must be washed and given water and a hay and grain mix before the show.

He said that the addition of the Showmanship Class will benefit participants.

“It’s something that the kids will learn off of and maybe lead to more people want-

ing to enter the show with the extra class,” Fankhanel said.

He added that his goal is to stay working on his family farm south of Ferintosh and that these shows are important for learning how to handle cattle.

“You improve every time.

From when we started to how they look now, they’ve really improved and in the future I think we’ll have even better animals to offer,” Fankhanel said.

The club member with the top heifer will receive a prize of $300, and the reserve prize is $100.

Protect yourself adequately from the elements with warm clothing rather than relying on the heater.

For non-garaged vehicles, be prepared with window scrapers that work, brushes and spray de-icer. When necessary, clear snow and scrape/ de-ice windows before starting. Then start the engine and immediately blast the defroster. In most cases, you’ll be ready to go in 30 seconds.

Remember safety first.

Lower your cost with a less toxic alternative to commercial spray de-icer. Make your own solution in a spray bottle mixing one part water to two parts rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) along with a few drops of dish detergent.

Diesel engines Heavy-duty diesel (commercial trucks and buses; school buses) should not be treated much differently. Diesel engine manufacturers in general recommend no more than three to five minutes of idle time. But there are idling reduction alternatives to consider. Use electric engine heaters (such as block heaters) to minimize idling time during warm-up, especially in cold weather.

Install a small generator or auxiliary power unit (APU) specifically designed for a truck that provides heat, air conditioning and/or electrical power, while the vehicle is not in motion. These devices are a better, more efficient alternative to idling as they use substantially less fuel and emit less pollution.

Depending on fuel cost and the amount of time spent idling, the payback on these devices can be six months to a year or more.

Turn off your vehicle when not in use. Any more than 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than is required to restart the engine. However, the break-even time to offset any potential incremental maintenance costs to the starter or battery is 30 seconds. So, as a guideline, if you’re stopped out of traffic for more than 30 seconds turn off the engine.

Engine manufacturers also recommend shutting down and restarting at least several times a day rather than continuous idling to save fuel and engine wear. Generally, fuel consumption during engine start-up or restarting of medium- and heavy-duty engines is equivalent to about 30 seconds of idling.

Woman hides her identity from police January 15

Police were advised that a female was intoxicated and laying in a snow bank along 48 Avenue in Camrose.

The female was located and she provided her name but could not identify where she resided. She was arrested for public intoxication and a search subsequent to arrest located an identification that revealed her true identity.

It was discovered that the female had lied about her name.

Further investigation revealed that the she had just left a licensed premise after she had assaulted her boyfriend. Further checks revealed that she was on release for drug charges with strict conditions. The female was charged with

obstructing a police officer, assault, public intoxication and six counts of breaching her release documents.

January 14

Police conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot of a west end business and immediately noted an odour of cannabis marihuana inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle located a minute amount and the driver was issued a 24-hour suspension as he was under the influence of cannabis while driving.

While on patrol two males were viewed fighting on a sidewalk in the west end of Camrose. Both subjects were heavily intoxicated and were issued $500 tickets for fighting in public contrary to the City of Camrose bylaw.

Celebrate Family Literacy Day at the library

Family Literacy Day will be celebrated across Canada on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Camrose Family Literacy, will join the public library and Early Childhood Development coalition in hosting a family activity night from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“It will be an hour of literacy rich, fun and family activities followed by a performance from the group Wonderstuff. A snack and social time will complete the evening,” said Lynne Hartwick, of Camrose Family Literacy. “This event is always a lot of fun and is a good opportunity to promote family interaction and healthy child development, especially in regards to the acquisition of important literacy skills.

Bring your families and there is no cost to participate.”

Research shows that reading to your children is hugely impactful in their development, especially in the early years. Parents are often a child’s first teacher, but if you get an older sibling involved in reading to younger ones, the result can be profound – for everyone involved. And, as a parent, you get to enjoy watching your children bond over books.

There are many great benefits to sibling reading time. For the older sibling it provides a chance to be a positive role model, it builds self-confidence, it can be an opportunity for added responsibility, it gives an extra practice reading and it builds vocabulary.
