Olson announces he will seek Wetaskiwin-Camrose nomination By Dan Jensen

Verlyn Olson will be seeking nomination as the PC representative for the Wetaskiwin-Camrose constituency Feb. 21. “I had been thinking about whether or not I should give it another go, and the Christmas break was a chance for me to discuss it with my family, as well as my friends and supporters,” said Olson. “It is not an easy decision because it is a big price for family to pay. I am not home very much, but my family has been great.” Olson has been elected to the legislature on two different occasions, the second time on April 23, 2012. He served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General in his first term, and will be completing his third year as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development this May. “I am very excited about Premier Jim Prentice and the things we are working on and I am very excited about my job in agriculture,” said Olson. “I have no guarantees that I will remain as agriculture minister because there is no job security with any cabinet position, but I just decided this is

something I wanted to stick with for a while.” The WetaskiwinCamrose PC Constituency Association is one of 35 associations that have been asked by Premier Prentice to have their nomination process completed before the end of February. “The approach of the Party is to be ready whenever it decides to go to election,” said Olson. “We do have provision for an election period, which is still a little bit more than a year away, but with all the changes that have been happening they just want to make sure they have this piece of it completed.” Olson said his job as agriculture minister has allowed him to be part of an exciting global and science based industry. “It is essential for everyone because when you look at it, eating is not going out of style,” he said. “There are huge opportunities for Alberta to do more in terms of trade, and in my mandate from the premier, one of my number one duties is to create more market access for agricultural products. I believe there are huge opportunities in agri-

culture to build markets and diversify.” Olson and his staff are in constant contact with Federal Agriculture Minister Ritz regarding what can be done about the United States’ Country of Origin Labelling (COOL), which has been ruled against by the World Trade Organization on three different occasions. “The one ray of light with that may be the mid-term elections in the United States,” he said. “Congress is now dominated by Republicans, who are more sympathetic to Canada and Mexico’s complaints about protectionism that is evident in COOL. We are thinking there may be some fresh eyes taking a look at this, so we are going to be gearing up.” Olson said the federal and provincial governments do not want to get into a situation where they are retaliating against the United States’ for COOL, but are getting closer and closer to the point where they have no choice. “I remember about a year ago when a media person asked Minister Ritz whether getting into

a battle with the United States would be a case of David taking on Goliath. Minister Ritz told him that if he read his bible he would see that David won. We have won three times at the World Trade Organization, so we feel we are on the right path. We just need to keep the pressure on.” Along with his ministerial duties, Olson has (at various times) s e r ve d as deput y house leader, deputy chair on the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons w ith Disabilities, chair of the F i rst Nations, Métis a nd I nu it Work forc e Pla n n i ng Com m itt ee, a member of the Cabinet Policy Committee on P ublic Health a nd Sa fet y a nd a member of t he Sta nd i ng Com m itt ees on P ub lic Accou nts, P r ivate Bills a nd Health. Prior to being elected, Olson was a partner with the law firm A nd rea ssen Olson Borth, where his practice focused primarily on real estate, wills, estates, counselling small businesses, and assisting farmers, families, seniors and dependent adults.

Library makes changes By Dan Jensen

Camrose Public Library will be implementing major reductions in services in an attempt to make up for a 2015 funding shortfall. CPL board members have voted to close the library’s doors on five Saturdays in 2015 and reducing the budget for books, movies and other materials by $27,000. “The board felt it was important that the library staff not carry the burden by having their wages or hours reduced,” said a Camrose Public Library issued press release. Board members also made the hard decision to increase the cost of library cards for County residents from $12 to $25. “”Fees are a huge barrier to the public enjoying library services,” said CPL board chair Elizabeth Luck, adding that more and more libraries are offering free cards. “If County residents are concerned about the increased price of library memberships, we encourage them to contact their councillor so the library can be accessible for all.”

Financial picture looking better for Bailey Theatre By Dan Jensen

Bailey Theatre Society president David Francoeur was brimming with optimism at the society’s annual general meeting Jan. 27. “We are continuing to free up McInnis money by the execution of limited indemnity agreements by generous members of our community and our Burn the Mortgage campaign is underway,” said Francoeur. “Our hope is to see our mortgage gone within the next few years.” The Society is presently paying $3,000 a month on a mortgage that has a balance of approximately $442,000. The original mortgage started at $600,000. Bailey supporters who want to help reduce the mortgage can do so by making a donation to the Cares program at ATB, which supplements donations by 15 per cent up to $1,000. “The program essentially turns a $5,000 donation into $5,750,” said Bailey Theatre Society secretary David Roth. “The money that is donated goes directly towards the mortgage. The one stipulation is that you have to make the donation online using a credit card.”

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Bailey Buckaroos play at the theatre on a monthly basis.

Francoeur said the society has acknowledged the fact that the City, which provided $1,000,000 in municipal sustainable initiative funding for capital, is not going to give money for operating expenses. “We are going to continue to look long term as to how it can consistently secure enough funding to keep the Bailey operating over the forthcoming years.” Bailey Theatre Society

treasurer Jeremy Mouat noted that the society is getting its financial house in order and, in the last fiscal year, was able to record revenues over expenditures totalling $26,509. “We are getting more successful with the performances that happen in this space and we have reestablished the Bailey as a unique venue at the north end of Main Street, but it is very difficult to imagine

over the long haul that performances will pay the bills,” he said. “We have a lot of bills, we have salaries to meet and we rely on fundraising. That is how we keep the show on the road.” Mouat said the Bailey Theatre Society has been fortunate to have financial assistance from Frank McInnis and the McInnis Family Foundation.

“He (McInnis) generally played a critical role in seeing the theatre reopen and has been matching funds, matching particular donations over the past several years, which has allowed us to continue operations.” Mouat said the society is going to have to work hard to raise the profile of the Bailey in order to compete with other entertainment venues in the city. “The casino, the performing arts centre on the Augustana campus and various bars are putting on shows. Sometimes they compete directly on the night of shows we have.” Bailey Theatre general manager Doug Roper explained the theatre has booked acts that will touch on various parts of the population, including Will the Circle Be Unbroken – the Songs and Stories As Told by John McEuen and John Carter Cash on Feb. 18, and the Celtic Tenors in March, and is planning a stage show authorized by Dan Akroyd and John Belushi’s wife featuring The Blues Brothers.

Police still looking for armed robber By Dan Jensen

Police services are still on the lookout for a man they believe to be responsible for armed robberies committed in Camrose, Red Deer and Edmonton. The Camrose robbery occurred at approximately 12:22 p.m. on Jan. 17 when a lone man walked into the Alberta Treasury Branch at 7300-48 Avenue and demanded money from a employee while displaying a handgun. The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of cash, fled the business through the front doors,

and proceeded in an unknown direction. No one involved in the incident was physically harmed. The robbery in Edmonton occurred at around 12:20 p.m. on Jan. 2 near 42 Avenue and Calgary Trail. Edmonton Police Service reported the suspect produced a firearm, demanded cash from two tank tellers and, once he received it, fled the scene. The robbery in Red Deer occurred at an ATB in the Bower Place Shopping Centre. As with the others, the suspect demanded money from a cashier while displaying a gun.

The suspect is described as a caucasian male approximately five feet six to five feet eight in height, wearing a plaid, red, grey and brown hooded sweater with the hood pulled over his head, blue jeans, globes, glasses and a dark covering over his face. Wilson supports Show Us Your Heart fundraiser By Murray Green This Valentine’s Day Global Pet Foods is asking Camrose to spread the love to the Battle River Animal Protection Society (BRAPS) during the ninth annual Show Us Your Heart fundraiser. Pet parents are invited to visit Global Pet Foods Camrose (5706-48th Avenue) knowing that 100 per cent of the funds raised will go directly to BRAPS to help cover the costs of medical bills of rescued animals. Since 2007, BRAPS has been advocating for animals in need – protecting them from neglect, abuse and abandonment. That’s why Global Pet Foods Camrose has developed a long-standing relationship with the shelter and continually raises money through Show Us Your Heart. Last year Global Pet Foods Camrose raised over $3,300 for the organization. From now until Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) the group is asking Canadian pet parents to donate as little as $1 at their local Global Pet Foods store during the annual Show Us Your Heart campaign. Global Pet Foods Camrose store owner Chris Zamora supports BRAPS because it is a non-profit organization operated solely by volun-

teers and only funded by public donations. BRAPS advocates for animals in the Battle River area by protecting them from neglect, abuse and abandonment. Global Pets in Camrose has been supporting the society for the last seven years. For more info on BRAPS visit www.braps.ca. However, Chris is willing to go one step further. “A $5 donation for a paper heart will earn you 10 bonus Air Miles. For every $10 donation at the Camrose store, we will give you a $10 gift card to be used on your next purchase,” said Chris. “Our store is doing this over and above other stores because we want to support BRAPS. All proceeds will go directly to BRAPS and all the funds stays locally.” BRAPS will also hold an adoption day at the store on Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “The animals are all spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ready for adoption,” said BRAPS vicepresident Monica Rusnak. “If someone wants to adopt a cat they can contact us at braps@hotmail.ca, phone 780-6785713 or 780-679-5607.” The ‘Dragon with a Heart,’ W. Brett Wilson and his poodle, J. Cash, will join forces with Global Pet Foods and Natural

Balance to spread love to homeless pets. “Family and pets have always been a big part of my life,” said Wilson. “Animals don’t have anyone to speak for them, so we have to step up. Show Us Your Heart is a great opportunity for J. Cash and I to put our faces forward to help animals in need.” To show your heart to homeless pets and the volunteers that support them, visit any Global Pet Foods store and Natural Balance will match the first dollar of every donation made in-store. Donations can also be made online by visiting globalpetfoods.com. All proceeds will be donated to local pet shelters and groups. “Show Us Your Heart is a true grassroots success story,” said Jim Walker, president of Global Pet Foods. “Small donations add up and make a big difference to smaller community-based groups who can use the funds to cover expenses for veterinarian care, buy food or just keep the lights on.” To reward customers for donating, Global Pet Foods is hosting their annual “Show Us Your Pet” contest. Fans are invited to share a picture of their pet for the chance to win great prizes. To learn more visit Facebook.com/globalpetfoods.

Team Koe enjoys teaching youngsters curling skills By Murray Green

More than 50 local junior curlers enjoyed an afternoon of skill instruction from Canadian champions Team Koe at the Rose City Curling Club on Feb. 2. Skip Kevin Koe, third Marc Kennedy, second Brent Laing and lead Ben Hebert were hosted by sponsors Meridian Manufacturing, which gave young curlers a chance to view their gold medals, receive autographs and prizes, as well as learn the game from professionals. Team Koe members are champions in the Brier, World and Olympic competitions and are based out of Calgary. “Meridian Manufacturing is proud to sponsor the first Meridian Team Koe Curling Clinic in Camrose. This is part of our commitment to serve local communities, its youth and the great sport of curling,” said Glenn Friesen, senior vicepresident sales and marketing of Meridian Manufacturing. “It’s a lot of fun. We were all junior curlers a long time ago and it’s fun to see how they have come along. Hopefully, we were able to pass on some knowledge and more importantly, just to have some fun with them,” said Kevin, who is no stranger to Camrose after Brier and Canada Cup appearances. “It was a great day and I’m glad Meridian was able to organize it and put this event on.” His team was excited about the turnout for the clinic.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Meridian Manufacturing employee and Rose City Curling Club president Neil Bratrud, left, junior curlers Scott Gilroy and Gavin Skaret, and skip Kevin Koe share some fun instruction at a clinic on Feb. 2.

“There are tons of children here and this is great to see. I wasn’t quite sure how high the level of curling would be with the juniors, but to come out and see 50 to 60 out having a blast and they are all great little curlers. It’s awesome,” shared Kevin. With the average age of curlers creeping higher, the challenge to find more youth involved in the sport has increased across the country. “When you watch seven

year olds with awesome deliveries, it is good to see and to see it I think the sport will be fine in the future. Hopefully, they stick to it,” Kevin added, as he tried to capture the excitement for his own team. “It’s exciting to meet everyone throughout the day. We (Team Koe) curl because it is fun and it rubs off on others.” Kevin didn’t recall an event like this when he was growing up in the sport. “I wish we could do more

of it and we’re thankful we were able to do it today,” he added. “It’s nice to be able to pass on some knowledge. We have all been successful curlers and teammates and hopefully the juniors can take a little something from this day, a tip or two, and put it to good use.” Team Koe is happy to have the backing of Meridian. “Meridian has been awesome to work with and when you see events like this they organize, it’s an example of how they sup-

port the community and youth,” said Kevin. “We are fortunate to be associated with a great company with good employees.” Camrose has been good to many curlers. “We have had some success in Camrose, so we are always glad to come back here,” Kevin concluded. Meridian finished the event by presenting prizes to several youth and providing pizza to both curlers and parents at the curling club.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson

What is your love language? What’s your love language? This is one of my favourite issues of the Camrose Booster. I love reading the little one-inch valentines. Several of them are to or from my relatives or other people I know, so that makes it even more fun. Reading the valentines reminds me of a book that’s made me much more conscious of how I express and receive love. Maybe you’ve heard of the book too. It’s called The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate by Gary Chapman. Chapman says there are five “love languages,” or ways of expressing and receiving love: Words of affirmation - saying kind things to one another; expressing appreciation; being a cheerleader. Acts of service - doing kind and thoughtful things to make another person’s life easier, or so the person feels pampered and appreciated. Quality time together - creating time and space to pay attention to one another. Touch - loving physical contact such as hugs, making love, reassuring touches and holding hands. In our electronic age, people at a distance can reach out and “touch” one another with notes, phone calls, Skype and social media. Gifts - tiny or expensive, sentimental or practical; we vary in how important gifts are to us, and the kind of gifts that best express love to us. Chapman says we do not necessarily send and receive messages of love in the same style. To use myself as an example, I often say affirming things. Without even thinking about it, speaking words of love comes naturally. On the other hand, I am especially moved when someone does an act of kindness for me. So “words of affirmation” is my natural love language to express love, and “acts of service” is a love language I can receive and understand. We each have different natural styles of expressing and receiving love. If the “expressing” and “receiving” styles are different from our own, we may not be able to recognize the love that is being sent to us, and others may not recognize the acts of love we send to them. Sometimes people who deeply love each other don’t feel it, because their styles of expressing and receiving love are not complementary. Chapman’s book is written for couples, but it can also apply to every relationship in our lives –with friends, relatives, co-workers, customers, neighbours and the rest of humanity that shares space on the planet. What is your most natural way to express love? And what is your favorite way to receive expressions of love? In this Valentine week, those could be fun questions to explore with people you treasure. You might also experiment with expressing love in ways that are unusual for you – and watching for ways that others express their affection for you that you might not appreciate because it’s not your natural “receiving” style. Happy Almost-Valentine’s Day! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com.

Our provincial revenue rollercoaster, fueled inconsistently by fluctuating oil royalties, has plunged to a low level again. But this time it seems to have created more budget angst than ever for our provincial government and for all Albertans, angst that pleads for a long-term solution. So what’s to be done? The foundation of a longterm progressive and humane solution must be a substantial revenue stream more consistent than that of oil royalties. The consequence for the government and for all Albertans is unpleasant but unavoid-

able: higher provincial taxes including personal taxes. The most equitable way of implementing higher personal taxes would be to reintroduce a graduated tax scale where the tax rate would increase in several steps according to income, with the rates on the scale high enough to generate significantly more tax income than what is now generated. But that would be clearly unpalatable to Premier Prentice and to his caucus. Still there is an alternative that should be acceptable to our provincial government. The Alberta flat tax structure includes a substantial personal exemption of almost $18,000 that provides a modest measure of graduation. So why not retain a flat tax structure but, to increase revenue, increase the flat tax rate significantly from its current 10 per cent to perhaps as high as 15 per cent? However, to shield those of low or modest income, and to apply a more significant graduation to all personal taxes, also increase the personal exemption substantially

from its current $18.000 to perhaps as high as $25.000. The actual rate of increase and actual personal deduction should be set based on calculations demonstrating personal tax and revenue implications. There is another potential source of significant extra revenue: a provincial sales tax (PST). That appears to have been dismissed by our government and by most Albertans. But it should not be rejected out of hand. A modest PST of two or three per cent, administered efficiently alongside the GST, would generate a couple of billion dollars in revenue annually and would be better than a reduction in important services. It is time for we Albertans to finally abandon the paralyzing assumption that, favoured by God or the universe with abundant oil, we are exempt from the need for tax structures that other provinces have found necessary to fund consistently important services and infrastructure. Battle River Community Foundation ambassador By Reesor presented a cheque for $1,500 CAFCL director Michelle Colombijn.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $1,500 to The Camrose Association for Community Living (CAFCL) to support the Teaching Independence and Parenting Support program (TIPS) and the Parent Child Assistance Program (PCAP). The grant is from income from the Arie and Leny Vanderjagt Fund and the Community Fund.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have cre-

ated endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $2,900,000 to support important facilities and programs such as those offered by the Camrose Association for Community Living.

Nordlys lights up dark winter days with annual festival By Laurel Nadon

The Nordlys Film and Arts Festival is set to break up the dark days of winter with a weekend full of live music, special guests and films. The popular event will be held at the Bailey Theatre from Feb. 13 to 15, kicking off with A Spotlight on Randall Okita and Trevor Anderson on Friday night. The tradition of black and white attire for opening night, formal or fun, will continue. Mardell Olson, a festival board member, said tuxedos and top hats, as well as black t-shirts and jeans, can be expected. “We’ve got a really strong line-up of great shows. We’re very excited about our concert Saturday night as well as our local musicians who perform between films in the lobby,” Olson said. She noted that last year the festival came close to selling out for at least one of the films and the board is making plans for handling potential sell outs. Last year, 139 weekend passes were sold and 334 people attended various parts of the weekend, with those numbers expected to be surpassed in 2015. Olson said that it’s an honour to have Okita and Anderson at the festival and that it will be interesting to hear what they have to say to the audience and each other. “It makes the experience so rich when you can watch their work and ask

questions directly to the filmmakers and hear them speak about their art form,” Olson said. Anderson, a filmmaker based in Edmonton, will show his short film The Little Deputy. The film recently premiered in Park City, Utah at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in January as one of 60 short films selected from 8,061 submissions. “I saw a lot of inspiring films and met some terrific filmmakers,” Anderson said. “Our film was very well-received. It’s nice to be able to come home and let my own friends and neighbours see it.” Anderson will also be showing The Man That Got Away, a musical with six original songs about his great uncle’s life. “I like to start with a true story and jump off from that into a cinematic fantasy,” Anderson said. He noted that he met Okita about five years ago on the festival circuit and finds his films to be imaginative and visual. “I’ve been an admirer of his. I’m very honoured to get to show my films alongside his,” Anderson said. “I always like to see filmmakers present their work. It allows you into a behind the scenes world.” Okita is a Toronto-based filmmaker whose most recent film, The Weatherman and the Shadowboxer, won the Best Canadian Short Film Award at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

This year’s community partner for the local festival is Habitat for Humanity, and the organization has produced a two minute film of its own with local filmmaker Alison Bortolon, which will be shown before the first feature film. “It gave us a chance to encapsulate what Habitat is all about in an interesting and engaging way,” said executive director Cody McCarroll. The film features a partner family as well as a staff member, with Habitat portrayed as a knight in shining armour defeating a fearsome dragon called poverty with affordable home ownership. “We are hoping to raise awareness of the issue of poverty and lack of affordable housing in Camrose,” McCarroll said. “We want to inspire people to get involved with Habitat either by volunteering or donating.” Habitat will run the coat check where donations can be made. Eight films, plus the films shown by Okita and Anderson, will be featured throughout the weekend. The drama Wadjda is the first film directed by a woman in Saudi Arabia and is the story of a girl determined to fight for her dreams. All of the films are recent with the exception of the 1951 French film Diary of a Country Priest. Other films are the comedy The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out Of

A Spotlight on Randall Okita, left, and Trevor Anderson will kick off the Nordlys Film & Arts Festival at the Bailey Theatre, running Feb. 13 to 15.

the Window and Disappeared; the drama Gabrielle about a young woman gaining independence; the romance/drama The Lunchbox about a woman’s desperate attempt to add some spice to her marriage; the drama/fantasy Only Lovers Left Alive about two sensitive vampires; the documentary North of the Sun about embracing adventures; and the drama The Hunt, a depiction of how a lie becomes the truth. Anyone who views at least seven of the films can be a Nordlys critic and take part in the Pretty Hill Award which wraps up the festival. There is also a casual vote after each film. Olson said this is a unique discussion starter and one of her favourite parts of the weekend.

“It shows that one film will speak to someone in a totally different way than it will speak to someone else.” Nordlys, which means Northern Lights in Norwegian, began as the Pretty Hill Film Festival which took place for ten years at the Olson family home near Armena. As the festival outgrew the basement and garage, it has evolved into the Nordlys Film & Arts Festival. “It’s like watching a dear child grow up and thrive,” Olson said. “It’s an absolute thrill to look back.” Tickets are available for this year’s event in person at the Bailey Theatre, Candler Art Gallery and Augustana Alumni Office. Online purchases are available at www.nordlysfestival.com

Mandolin Orange and local performers to set Nordlys stage By Laurel Nadon

A line-up of local talent as well as a duo from North Carolina are set to create a lively, intimate atmosphere at this year’s Nordlys Film and Arts Festival at the Bailey Theatre from Feb. 13 to 15. Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin, the duo behind Mandolin Orange, will bring their country-folk sound to the stage for a Saturday evening concert. “It’s their lyrics that really draw you in. They tell intricate stories about life and love and loss,” said Sarah Skinner, music coordinator for the Nordlys. “Those lyrics and stories are told through Emily and Andrew’s beautiful harmonies, accompanied by a very rich texture of mandolin, violin and guitar.” Marlin and Frantz have been combining folk, bluegrass and gospel melodies since meeting at a local jam in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2009. On Mandolin Orange’s third release, This Side Of Jordan, there’s a Lightnin’ Hopkins lyric, “If fate’s an old woodpecker then I’m an old chunk of wood.” “I love the imagery that creates,” Marlin said.

Photo submitted Mandolin Orange, a North Carolina duo, will perform country-folk tunes during the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival at the Bailey Theatre, running Feb. 13 to 15. Local musicians will also perform in the lobby between films.

“You just picture death as this woodpecker that lands on your shoulder and starts chipping away at you until there’s finally nothing left.” Marlin had a near fatal accident around the time the duo’s acclaimed Haste Make/ Hard Hearted Stranger was released in 2011. This Side Of Jordan is full of honest tales of love and loss during that healing process.

Skinner first heard the pair at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival in August, which she attends each year with her family. “Usually every year I discover a new group,” Skinner said. “I love the sound of male and female voices singing together in harmony. They both have a wonderful sense of humour, very laidback and personable.”

She added that Mandolin Orange’s sound is conducive to this kind of venue. “The Bailey Theatre is a very personable and intimate setting and Andrew and Emily are so suited to that atmosphere,” Skinner said. The music kicks off on Friday night with the Wetaskiwin High School’s Shades of Blue jazz combo.

Mardell Olson, a festival board member, noted that the five-member combo includes teacher Sandra Hall. “People who have heard them are raving about this little jazz combo,” Olson said. Go Sun Go with Leslie Lindballe and Jordan Leden will perform country folk tunes on Friday evening. On Saturday in the lobby between films, five members of The Wetaskiwin Strings will show their classical side. On Sunday, guitarist Stephen Olson will share his unique fingerpicking style and the Skinner family, comprised of Sarah, two of her brothers and sister-in-law, will perform Indie folk and rock tunes. “It’s an opportunity to showcase some of the amazing talent we have in Camrose and surrounding areas,” Skinner said. “It’s always great to have the opportunity to listen to live music.” She said that having these wonderful musicians perform will create an intimate atmosphere where people can be nearby, listening to the music and discussing the films they’ve just viewed.

Saving for retirement From CIBC

Investing for your retirement helps to ensure you’ll have the savings and income you need to live comfortably, travel or pursue whatever new dreams you choose once you leave the workforce. There are many different ways to save for your retirement. Because of its tax benefits, a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is the preferred way to invest for many Canadians. However, non-registered investments and Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) offer opportunities to save beyond your allowable RRSP contribution limit. The maximum amount you can contribute to an RRSP annually is 18 per cent of your prior year’s qualifying earnings (up to an annual limit of $24,270 for the 2014 tax year), less any applicable pension adjustment, plus any unused RRSP contribution room from prior years and any pension adjustment reversal. An advisor can help you determine how much you’ll need. It’s a matter of establishing the total income you’ll require in retirement, estimating your annual expenses and considering other circumstances. RRSPs are held inside a plan registered with the government. Funds contributed to an RRSP are deductible from your taxable income within certain limits. All registered investments grow tax-deferred and funds may be invested in various investment products. Non-registered investments offer a way to save beyond the limited allowable amount you can invest in your RRSP or TFSA. Income earned from non-registered investments is taxable in the year it is earned. An RRSP lets you put your money into your retirement plan, and save on taxes, too. Simply put, an RRSP is a registered savings plan that allows you to accumulate funds for retirement, while saving you taxes. Investing in an RRSP has a much bigger impact on your savings than investing outside one because both the amount you contribute to your RRSP and the income it earns are sheltered from tax as long as the money stays in the plan. But remember, RRSP assets will be taxed when withdrawn from your plan at the marginal tax rate you’re paying at that time. An RRSP lets you invest more of your income. For example, if you’re in a 40 per cent tax bracket and set aside $5,000 of your gross income a year, you’ll have just $3,000 after taxes to invest outside an RRSP. However, if you put that $5,000 into an RRSP, the full $5,000 goes towards your investment. An important part of planning for retirement is thinking about what you can do now to make sure you will achieve your personal and financial goals. Consider these tips to ensure you’re doing all you can today, for a better retirement tomorrow.

Let Vision Credit Union help you get there…

Energy Minister visiting Camrose Feb. 11 By Dan Jensen

Energy Minister Frank Oberle will be speaking at a 11:30 a.m. Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce sponsored luncheon at the Bailey Theatre tomorrow (Feb. 11). Oberle had the opportunity to see first hand the more than $14 billion in current and planned expansion in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Feb. 4. “Alberta has the expertise to produce high value energy products and I was pleased to see how the Heartland region con-

tinues to grow and attract investment,” said Oberle. “By working together we will weather the current low price environment and ensure this region has a bright future as a leader in value-added and petro chemical development.” The continued growth in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland helps stimulate long term investment, jobs and revenue in the petrochemical and oil sands logistics sectors. Current and planned projects in the area will create long term manufacturing jobs

that pay $1.8 billion a year in salaries, and increase provincial revenue by over $6.5 billion and federal revenue by $10 billion over a 10 year period respectively. The Alberta Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA) supports the provincial government’s continued efforts to open pipeline access to Eastern Canada and industrial markets, and believes that policies to expand energy diversification in the province will produce a host of benefits for all Alber-

tans in the form of jobs, new markets and stable revenue to pay for roads, schools and hospitals. “There is significant opportunity with lower cost feedstock from natural gas, including a range of petrochemical products,” said AIHA executive director Neil Shelly. “With the right policies in place the business case for further investment is strong.” Tickets for the luncheon may be obtained by calling the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce at 780-672-4217.

On the Other Hand… A new monthly column in

Let‛s play and learn together!

beginning next week! John Howard came to Camrose in 1983 via St. Louis, Anderson and Winnipeg. Sure that he was to come to Gardner College, he was less sure about Camrose, as he was truly a city boy. Taking comfort in the proximity of Edmonton, he decided to give Camrose a try. Camrose was true to the spirit of a small city with a big city mindset, and John soon found himself comfortably at home. His welcome to Camrose soon allowed him to serve as President of the Rotary Club, and in all of the executive positions on the Chamber of Commerce, including President. When he ended his career at Gardner College, he served as fundraiser for the community portion of the funds for the building of the Recreation Centre. That experience eventually led to an interest in Camrose politics and he was elected to two terms as city councillor. In addition, John served six years on the St. Mary’s Hospital Community Board. John currently serves as a constituency assistant to Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot and Minister of State (Finance). John also does pulpit supply in area churches, but always returns to Camrose. John now also serves on the Habitat for Humanity board and the board for About Time Productions. He was most finally convinced that Camrose is the place to be, as his children and grandchildren are all making Camrose home. Once doubtful of Camrose as a place to live out his life, on the other hand, he has now become a true “Camrose Booster.” We welcome John to the pages of The Booster and trust that you will enjoy this new monthly feature!

Experienced Entrepreneur Joins Central Agencies Real Estate Team Cole Walker

Though Cole Walker has yet to turn 30 years of age, he already has a lifetime of experience in the complexities of business. After graduating from Camrose Composite High School this Camrosian moved north to Ft. McMurray where, together with his uncle, he owned and operated a car Cole Walker wash and gas station business. B.Com A second opportunity arose five years ago when Cole and Cell: 780.679.5544 his cousin, a third generation grocery store owner, co-purchased the Garden Market IGA store in Beaverlodge. With aspirations to return to the city that “will always feel like home”, Cole and his wife Tiffany (Weinkauf), also Camrose born and raised, sold their shares of both businesses in northern Alberta. While searching for a home using the service of Central Agencies Inc. realtor Matthew Mayer, a friend from school years and youth sports, Cole became intrigued at the prospect of a career in the real estate business. Soon after buying a property in the Creekview Subdivision, Cole earned his license. “It was the simplest of decisions to join the Central Agencies real estate team”, notes Walker, “in fact, I didn’t even explore other available real estate options. Recognizing the family atmosphere at the Central Agencies office I knew this would be the only place where I would want to build my client base”. Tiffany, a personal trainer, and Cole have a young family. Their daughter Avery will turn two years of age in June. A brother or sister for Avery is due in May. Cole is an avid outdoorsman. He continues to love oldtimer’s hockey, and has always had a passion for fitness. As Cole and Tiffany, along with their young family, get settled back in their hometown, they are anxious to get reacquainted with former friends and contacts. Cole is settled into his real estate role and is already proving his value as Central Agencies’ newest addition to the team. Drop by and say hi or give him a call if you are in the market to buy or sell a property, or business.

Will the Circle Be Unbroken shares both songs, stories By Murray Green

John McEuen and John Carter Cash have more in common than most people realize. McEuen, one of the original members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB), and his band mates recorded the flagship 1972 release, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, they made certain it would be a career changing album. “Years ago I had a dream of recording with Earl Scruggs and I asked him one night in Colorado if he would record with the Dirt Band. He said yes and a week later I asked Doc Watson. He said yes and the Dirt Band proceeded to work on the album Will The Circle Be Unbroken,” recalled McEuen. Nitty Gritty surrounded themselves with a shortlist of the biggest names in bluegrass and country music with Roy Acuff, Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Scruggs and even Mother Maybelle Carter. Those tireless nights in August 1971 produced a classic record that remains relevant to this day. “We (NGDB) actually started in 1966 and this year marks our 49th year,” said McEuen, who performed at the Big Valley Jamboree a couple of times. “We toured 88 cites last year. In addition, to that I tour with this project and some solo performances. About 40 shows away from the NGDB.” Now McEuen and John Carter Cash (son of Johnny Cash and June Carter) want to share the experience with music fans from the Camrose area.

John McEuen, above, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founding member, and John Carter Cash share priceless stories.

They will be performing a historic show on Wednesday, Feb. 18 beginning at 8 p.m. at the Bailey Theatre, recalling the music from that time period. The duo will share the stories and memories through multimedia shows featuring personal photographs, narrative and music. The audience will discover how Mother Maybelle Carter and friends came together for the historic recording sessions. “This was Mother Maybelle’s first gold and platinum album. She is John Carter Cash’s grandmother

and he has had that album in the background his entire life. His dad, Johnny Cash, was a very big fan of the Dirt Band and recorded with us a couple of times. We did about 20 shows with him over the years,” said McEuen. “A few years ago I asked John Carter to do some Carter family music with me and we had such a good time. He suggested that we tell the story of the young NGDB coming together with my grandmother. Now people don’t seem to get enough.” McEuen explains the NGDB’s story of a bunch of young 1960s ‘west-coast longhair hippies’ with a dream to get on the radio.

Hit songs from their early years performed live accompany what is on screen. McEuen’s enthusiastic storytelling and music, coinciding with what is on the screen behind them, leads to how NGDB joined the icons of Country Music for a magic Nashville week in August of 1971 to create the classic multi-platinum album. “We plan on continuing with these concerts for a few more years because it has been so well received. Camrose wanted us to come right away, so we booked our tour to include this show,” added McEuen. “Between the NGDB’s schedule, my solo dates and John Carter Cash’s dates, it took some planning.” This concert features two driving forces in American music – the NGDB and the music of the Carter Family. John Carter shares the Carter Family story with music, narrative, and historic photographs from his personal archives. On stage, with music from the early Carter Family days by the ensemble, John Carter relates what it was like growing up with ‘Grandma Maybelle Carter’, and how A.P. Carter influenced his and his father’s life’s path. His telling of how his mother’s song, Ring of Fire, came about is a great insight. The full cast (including original NGDB member Les Thompson) performs songs from the Circle album against the larger-thanlife photo-montage backdrop from the sessions. The audience is transported to that magic time with the performers for an exciting, unforgettable experience.

“I love playing with the Dirt Band, but I don’t get to play all of the songs I want. We have 18 other songs we have to play. This gives me a chance to play some different songs and it is a lot of fun,” said McEuen. “We play ‘Mr. Bojangles,’ but we share the story of how the song came about. It is a funny story that people like to hear.” After many hits the evening ends with the band and audience joining in for the Carter classic “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” “John (Carter Cash) tells the story of how the song ‘Ring of Fire’ came about and it is hilarious,” said McEuen. “Sharing the stories is what makes it such a fun and great show to do.” McEuen describes how events unfolded as a new dimension of his innovative ways to approach the music in new and exciting domains during the show. The audience seemed to agree as their applause supported every step through the journey. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played ‘30s jug band music during a time when Bob Dylan went electric and the Beatles launched the British Invasion. McEuen displays photos and footage of the Dirt Band’s 1977 trip to the USSR. The band was the first American act allowed into the communist country, a diplomatic feat that stunned the locals. Tickets, McEuen said, cost over a month’s salary – concert-goers split tickets into time-shares. In Leningrad, the band’s four encores got the crowd so heated it would be seven years another American group was allowed in.

Saskatoon’s Outside The Wall pays tribute to Pink Floyd By Murray Green

Saskatoon band Outside The Wall went from a group of guys who liked the rock group Pink Floyd to being one of the best tribute bands over the last decade. Outside The Wall will be performing at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Feb. 13 beginning at 8 p.m. “One day after attending a Pink Floyd concert our drummer and the other guitar player Ron jokingly said we should just play their music all of the time. They saw them in Winnipeg and then I saw the band in Edmonton and it took off from there after an off the cuff statement,” said Corey Hildebrand, who sings the majority of the songs in the tribute. “We took a year to learn all of the songs and we have evolved over the last 14 years. We haven’t gotten tired of it and the fans still want to hear more Pink Floyd music.” Outside the Wall’s first performance attracted a full house, with a lineup down the

block that suggested there are lots of fans of the music. “We love playing and we’re excited to play in Camrose. We’ve played facilities, much like yours, and it’s exciting for us to play at an arts place, rather than at a pub. It’s like a show and we love to have an audience that is going just to see us,” said Hildebrand. “We play the music of Pink Floyd, but in the past we have added visuals. It is fantastic for the audience, but our main goal is to

recreate the music of Pink Floyd for the audience. Specials (visuals) are just icing on the cake.” Outside The Wall honours the music to which true fans are dedicated, making every show an experience and an event. What started out as a chance to play the music they love for fun has turned into 14 years of live performances. The sixpiece band recreates the Pink Floyd sound with melodies, lyrics and stirring solos.

“I can only speak for myself, but we don’t play a lot because we all have other jobs. We keep coming back to Pink Floyd music because people want to hear it and it hasn’t slowed down. As long as people want us to continue, I think we will,” explained Hildebrand. “We love it and if someone else wants to hear it then we will keep playing.” Outside The Wall was a five piece band until it added Hildebrand’s wife Carrie. “She plays the saxophone

and it adds depth to our band,” said Hildebrand. “It also allows us to work (they are employed by the same company), play music and live together.” Hildebrand’s favourite song to perform is “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” off the album Wish You Were Here. “We perform their later year’s version of it and what is fantastic about it is that every member of the band is featured in a solo piece,” he shared. “Everybody is singing and playing and to me that is fantastic. It’s the highlight of the night.” The band concentrates of the glory years of Pink Floyd. “We want to perform the songs people know as well as some of the not as well known good songs,” Hildebrand said. “Like Pink Floyd, we are a group of performers rather than individuals.” Tickets for Outside The Wall are on sale at the Lougheed Centre website at www.camroselive.ca. You can call the box office at 780-6082922 for more details.

Alexander Gabry August 26, 1921 – January 29, 2015 Mr. Alex Gabry of Bashaw, formerly of Camrose, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the age of 93 years. Alex was born in the Franklin Municipality of Manitoba on August 26, 1921. He was the youngest of nine children born to Tom and Pearl Gabry. In 1923, the family moved to southern Saskatchewan where Alex attended school and helped on the farm. In 1937, the family came to the Lake DeMay district in Alberta, and in 1939, they moved to a farm in the Bawlf district. Alex joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1944 and in 1946, escorted German prisoners back to England by ship. When he was discharged, he took an electrical training course and also operated a TV repair store in Donalda, AB before embarking on a lifelong career as an electrician. Alex was actively involved in the Bawlf Legion as a member and also served as president. For many years, Alex was also a member of the Masons – Camrose Chapter. He had an adventurous nature engaging in trapping, mink farming and working in the North (Yukon, N.W.T. and AB) and drove the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Central America. He also found time to take a lengthy cruise around the world to such faraway places such as the Far East. Through the Edmonton Flying Club, Alex obtained his pilot’s license in 1960 and became involved in various aviation-related activities. Attendance at various fly-in breakfasts was greatly enjoyed for many years. It was at the single’s club that Alex met Bernice Starcheski and, after a courtship of 10 years, they married on July 28, 1984 and spent almost another 30 years together in Camrose. They enjoyed travelling, dancing (ballroom and square dancing), playing cards (crib anyone?), camping, fishing and visiting with family and friends. Fondly remembered were the approximately 10 years that they lived in the Park Place North Condos. Playing the violin became a keen interest for Alex and he travelled to many fiddle contents and jamborees, collecting trophies and ribbons along the way. The weekly jam session with other musicians at Park Place North was considered a highlight. Alex was predeceased by his parents; eight siblings; and his wife, Bernice. He will be fondly remembered by his stepchildren, Linda and (Chuck) Descheneaux of Edmonton, Jim (Ann) Starcheski of St. Albert and Anthony Starcheski of Edmonton; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Also left to cherish Alex’s memory are nieces and nephews, cousins and other family and friends. A funeral service was held on Friday, February 6, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Brett Starcheski Memorial Fund, or to the Royal Canadian Legion Bawlf, AB Branch, or to the charity of one’s choice. James ( Jim) Donald AuCoin January 24, 1944 – January 29, 2015

McCORRY, Frederick January 29, 2015 Fred was born in Camrose in 1954 to Rose and Paddy. He was the second youngest of six children. Rose was re-married to Bob Sakowsky, who became Fred’s second dad. Fred spent his first 34 years in Camrose during which time he made many lifelong friends. Fred’s family started in 1977 with the birth of his daughters Tanya, Shyla and Brittany. Fred then moved with his wife Kerry and children to Kelowna and dabbled in many adventures and again acquired some lifetime friends. In 2001, Fred and his family moved back to Alberta, settling in Red Deer where he started a painting business. Fred leaves to mourn his wife of 34 years Kerry (Chadwick); his daughters Tanya McGinnis and her children Connor, Rowyn and Isibeal, Shyla Jensen (Jamie), Doryen and Maddy, Brittany White (Jeff) and Riley. He also leaves behind numerous extended family and friends. Fred was predeceased by his father Paddy, his mother Rose, sister Helen, son-in-law Matt and nephew Tyler. Fred loved life, had an incredible sense of humor and never sat still for long. He loved the outdoors, fishing, golfing, music trivia, (“The Oilers”) and his second home, Isla Mujeres, Mexico. His last years were very busy with his family, especially his grandchildren whom he adored. A Celebration of Life will be held in Camrose at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.eventidefuneralchapels.com. Arrangements entrusted to EVENTIDE FUNERAL CHAPEL 4820-45 Street, Red Deer Phone 403-347-2222

It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of James (Jim) Donald AuCoin. Jim was much loved and cherished by his wife of 52 years, Dianne. His legacy will live on through his children – Lloyd (Laurie), Georgina (Dennis), James (Tara) and Don; his grandchildren – Amanda, Suzanne, Julie, Laura, Parker, Jackson, Cameron, Ethan and Cooper; his great-grandchildren – Georgia, Havanna, Lucas, Emma, Domenic and Aubree; his brother Robert (Lucy); and sisters Marilyn (Jerry) and Carol. Jim was predeceased by his grandson Christopher, his brother Fred and his brother-in-law Ron. Jim was born in Vancouver, BC and spent his childhood in Nanaimo where he met his soulmate Dianne in seventh grade. In 1962, they were married and started their journey of raising a family together. They moved to Vancouver in 1966 where he began his career as a pipefitter in the oil and gas industry. It was in Port Moody that his passion for soccer began as he served on the board of the Port Moody Soccer Association and was involved as a coach and referee. A family move to Calgary in 1979 offered new opportunities for his career and his children. His strong work ethic was complimented by his love to explore the outdoors through camping, fishing and spontaneous road trips. He spent many weekends visiting garage sales which led to a keen interest in collecting anything and everything. As the years progressed, and his children grew, Jim and Dianne found themselves enjoying a life of simplicity at their retirement property in Ferintosh, AB. Jim spent his days puttering, gardening, watching the soccer channel and even tried his hand at raising chickens. Jim enjoyed trips to many states in the USA with his favorite travel companion, Dianne, but was particularly fond of Las Vegas, Penticton and always appreciated returning to Vancouver to visit his favorite spot – Stanley Park. In his later years, he maintained his connection with his grandchildren by learning social media – especially Twitter – which elevated him to the level of ‘cool grandpa’. One of his greatest attributes was his ability to make people laugh and smile. Jim approached life with a sense of humor and always had a one-liner to deliver which he carried with him until the very end. A memorial service was held on Monday, February 9, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calgary Kensington Legion (1910 Kensington Road NW). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Childrens Hospital.

Doll heads to Winter Games with experience By Murray Green

Braden Doll is hoping to garner a medal in wheelchair basketball at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C. from Feb. 13 to March 1. Doll reflected on how he got started in the sport. “Originally, since my sister (Mackenzie) is in a wheelchair, she started as an adaptive sport for activity levels and then I decided to join her to provide support,” he explained. “It was in a mini-league for U12. As we grew and progressed with the sport, we were asked to join Team Alberta for the 2011 Winter Games in Halifax.” Mackenzie was unable to attend and Braden made the team as an alternate. Due to an athlete cancellation, Braden soon found himself on the squad. “I was fortunate to go, but I didn’t get much playing time,” said Braden. “Since then, we have competed at some western Canada tournaments together with the junior team and I have grown with them, which has brought us to the Canada Winter Games.” A series of camps and tryouts were held for the Winter Games squad and Braden made the team of top 12 players. “I’ve grown in skills over the last two years to be a starter and a leader to spearhead the team,” said Braden. “I expect to play a lot of minutes and hopefully lead the team to a successful finish.” Meanwhile, Mackenzie is taking time off from basketball this year. Success for Braden would mean a medal when the competition is over. “Saskatchewan and Quebec are our main adversaries. Saskatchewan has several players on Team Canada and Quebec has a larger population to draw from,” said Braden. “Last time I went to enjoy the Games. This time it is a little more nerve-racking

because we want to do well and medal. It is a toneddown Olympics for many athletes.” Alberta could claim a medal if they can play well. Teams compete in a round robin in a pool prior to playoff semifinal crossovers. Braden plays on the Camrose Composite High School senior basketball team as well as for Team Alberta in wheelchair basketball. “I like the team aspect of wheelchair basketball,” he said. “It is definitely like a second family to me and we’re a family that supports each other. We play a defensive game, not offence like stand-up basketball. That unifies the team more. You have to trust your teammates on the court and passing is more important. It can’t be one person running the show.” The first and hardest skill to learn is how to dribble.

“It is hard to dribble and not hit the ball off your chair. The wheelchair is an extension of your body and not just equipment. Adapting to the wheelchair was my biggest problem at first,” he added. Braden is working on his communication skills on the court, leadership and helping his teammates any way he can. “I’m developing the intricacies of the game by drawing two defenders on me to open space for my teammates,” he explained. “We are going in as a younger team so gaining experience is valuable. The next Canada Winter Games will be held in Red Deer and as the host team, we want to be in a position to challenge for the gold medal.” Braden travels to Edmonton three times a week for practices under coach Darryl Nordell of the Alberta Northern Lights.

“I go into each game thinking about who I am going to be defending against. I have defensive goals to shut the other team down, rather than worrying about how many points I’m going to score,” he added. “Offensively, I set goals of passing to set up my teammates. A lot of the athletes from the 2011 Games have continued forward to these games, so we will know our opponents. We have competed against them over the past four years.” Because wheelchair basketball is an aggressive sport, Braden often takes his loaned chair home with him to minor repairs, or adjustments. “We receive the chair on loan for a small fee, but it is up to us to maintain them,” he said. Braden also attained bronze at the 2014 Provincial Skills Canada Competition in electrical installations and is a black belt in TaeKwon-do.

Asfeldt headed to Games after injury setback By Murray Green

Augustana Vikings cross-country skier Hans Asfeldt has been working hard to recover from a running injury to compete in the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C. from Feb. 13 to March 1. Asfeldt competes in running for the Vikings to keep in top shape for the skiing season. However, a late season injury put a damper on his fall and winter ski training. “This is the most exciting event that I have been in as a cross-country skier. Last year, and

previous years, racing at nationals has been the highlight because you are racing against the best in the country,” explained Asfeldt. “The Canada Winter Games won’t have the same elite skiers because the Olympians and national team won’t be there. It will be a U23 event. That being said, it will be more competitive in a sense that I have more prospects in placing in finishing higher.” Asfeldt said it will also be exciting because it is a large event with multiple winter sports.

“It will be the biggest and most prestigious event that I have participated in. One of the things the ski team communicated with us is that we are not only on the Alberta ski team, but also on this larger Team Alberta. It will be interesting to feel that team unity across other sports. It’s an opportunity to learn about other sports and see other athletes in action.” Asfeldt placed in the top five in Alberta, which is one of the stronger provinces in cross-country skiing. “I’m not looking to medal, unless maybe on the

relay team, but certainly a top 10 finish, or a little better,” he said realistically. “One of the factors is my injury. I have been training hard in the pool and in the gym, but I haven’t been on the snow trails this winter, so I hope that I’m ready by the time the Games begin. I will start skiing in February. Provincials and then nationals are where I want to do well, but the Games are a good place to start for me.” He is ready for the groomed in Prince George and he will be bringing his coach with him.

It was a tale of two games. Sounds like a novel, but the weekend games between the first place Camrose Kodiaks and the second place Brooks Bandits didn’t solve anything in two completely opposite games. Camrose dominated the first game in Brooks 6-1, Jan. 30. However, it was the Bandits that stole the two points in the 6-1 rematch on Jan. 31. “In the first game, we came to play and played our game. We didn’t get rattled, or unfocused at all,” said defenceman Trevor Costello. “After beating them 6-1, some guys got a little to complacent, we got unfocused and we thought it was going to be easier then it was. We should have known it was going to be a war.” Both games featured a steady parade to the penalty box as the squads wanted to prove which team was better. “Brooks is a good team and if you give them enough chances they are going to capitalize. It’s like a playoff series and we have to win the next one,” added Costello. “All of the games the rest of the way are important, so now we have to take it one game at a time and be prepared.” In the first contest, Camrose went zero for 11 on the power play, but two shorthanded markers in the first period offset the lack of production. Ryker Leer and Brett Njaa gave Camrose a 2-1 lead in the first. “At least we know that we have good penalty killing, and we had extra practice on that,” joked Costello, commenting on the extra work load for the special teams. “The positive is we know everything they do on the power play because I can’t even count how many times we had to kill penalties. Now we’ll be ready and prepared for them. We even had some good five on three practice against them.” Braeden Salverda added to the lead in the third before Adam Wheeldon netted the third Camrose shorthanded tally of the game. It was one behind the record of four in a game for the team. “It’s a huge boost to us when we can score shorthanded and it deflates the other team as well,” said Costello. “It’s good to chip in on offence.” In the third, Cam Gotaas and Scott Ferguson added insurance markers. Goalie Devin McDonald stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced. Camrose had 35 shots on net. It was another self-inflicted busy night for the same whistle-friendly referee in the rematch as Brooks capitalized on three of 14 power play opportunities, while Camrose failed to score in eight chances. “We know that they (Brooks) are going to try to draw us into the scrums and do stuff to get under our skin,” said Costello. “It is all mental and we are going to tough it out when they crosscheck or slash us. We know they are going to, so we have to be prepared for that. We can’t retaliate and that will frustrate them. We can just be more physical and that will frustrate them as well.” The local connection provided the lone Kodiaks goal as Dallas Bergstrom scored with help from Danton Davis and Landon Pilger. McDonald made 17 out of 23 saves before Reid Kilburn came in to turn away all 14 shots directed at him in net. The Kodiaks host Okotoks in the next home game at the EnCana Arena on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. and then take on the Calgary Mustangs on Feb. 16 with a 2 p.m. start time. Camrose then has just two more home games left in the regular season. The Kodiaks take on the Olds Grizzlys on Feb. 24 and the Drumheller Dragons on Feb. 28 in evening games. Bear facts

On Feb. 13, Camrose will be facing the Okotoks Oilers in the Max McLean Arena in a retro night contest. The Kodiaks will be wearing special old time jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game.

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Augustana sends three to Universiade By Murray Green

Team Canada’s biathlon squad will have two Augustana Vikings on the roster and coach Lowell Niven will lead the team in events in Europe. The 2015 Winter Universiade Games run from Feb. 3 to 14 in Granada, Spain. University of Alberta Augustana Campus biathlete Keely MacCulloch will be on the women’s team and Sasha Eccleston competes on the men’s side. MacCulloch competed at the 2013 Games in Trentino, Italy. She was also part of the ninth-place mixed relay team. MacCulloch competed in the 2012 junior world championships in Kontiolahti, Finland

Eccleston joins Regan Mills (Truro, Nova Scotia) and Sam West (Grand Prairie) as veterans of the Canadian championship series. Niven also has previous Winter Universiade experience, as he served as the technician in Trentino. The contingent will compete for Canada’s first medal in biathlon at the Universiade. Women’s events include 15 km individual, 7.5 km sprint, 10 km pursuit, 12.5 km mass start and a mixed relay. Men’s events include 20 km individual, 10 km sprint, 12.5 km pursuit, 15 km mass start and the mixed relay. The Winter Universiade is a biennial international multisport event open to competitors

who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of Jan. 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a postsecondary institution in the year preceding the event. The Granada Universiade will feature nine compulsory sports and one optional sport. The optional sport is freestyle skiing.

Family Literacy Day celebrated at Camrose library By Murray Green

The Camrose Public Library was a hub of fun and laughter as families gathered together to celebrate Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27. About 90 adults and children joined in activities and games to start the evening. Then, the children were treated to a variety of sing-a-long songs with Lavina Copperpot, known to all as the Fairy Godmama and played by Janice Shoults. A magic show by Professor Cornelius Copperpot (played by Dave Wilson) followed and children howled with laughter as Professor Copperpot brought his own special brand of humour to the magic tricks. “Family Literacy Day is celebrated to promote early childhood learning and the key role played by parents in helping their children’s healthy development,” said Lynne Hartwick, Camrose Family Literacy coordinator. “Learning starts in the home, long before children go to school. Important learning occurs in all of the everyday activities that children and parents do together. Parents are their children’s first and best teachers.” The event was sponsored by Camrose Family Literacy, Camrose Public Library and the Early Childhood Development coalition.

Lesson wasn’t learned February 4

As a result of conducting a vehicle stop, police have charged a 26-year-old Camrose man with driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and registration and the misuse of a licensed plate. The man’s vehicle was also seized for 30 days. February 2

On the morning of Feb. 1, at 10 a.m., police released a female who had been charged with break and enter as she had posted her $500 cash bail. At 1:45 p.m. of Feb. 1, police received a complaint that the same female had just broke into another residence and stole property not belonging to her. Police located the female and arrested her for break and enter, possession of stolen property and breaching her release conditions. She was subsequently remanded into custody and appeared in Provincial Court on Feb. 4. The break and enters were not random acts, as the victims were known to the offender.

Rotary scholarships

The Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak awarded $1,000 scholarships to Brianne Shultz (top photo) and Jonathon Naslund (bottom) to use towards their post-secondary education. The presentations were made by Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak president Anna Harder and scholarship committee chair Paul Vieira.

Hope Haugen, left, and Mackenzie Bird made crafts during the Camrose Family Literacy activities session at the Camrose Public Library.

On the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’ statement concerning eligibility for induction asserts that Hall “shall consider factors such as an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique, but musical excellence shall be the essential qualification of induction.” The very fact, however, that the sub-mediocre pop-punk trio Green Day topped the list of 2015’s inductees makes it abundantly clear that these criteria are cynically disingenuous at best; at worst, they speak to the tone-deaf curation of the hallowed halls of rock history. Green Day are – on their best day – a band of aging juvenile delinquent hobbits, hawking derivative, punk-lite songs that give the finger to conformity and “the Man” out of the front of the store, whilst selling the rights to turn their albums into lucrative Broadway musicals out the back door. In the end, it couldn’t matter any less that Green Day are not authentically punk – as a case in point: the Sex Pistols are grateful Hall of Fame inductees, notwithstanding their legacy of putative anti-establishment, paleo-punk anthems – or that they are boring, or that they are hypocrites. What matters is that they are now being celebrated as paragons of “musical excellence” and for a long and deeply meaningful career that has had a significant “musical influence upon other artists.” I have to wonder if the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation membership has any meaningful familiarity with “rock music” as such? If they did, then we could just assume that the induction of Green Day into the Hall was simply a joke

Second Thought

Alex Carpenter, Music, Augustana Campus, University of Alberta

– a mean-spirited, ironydriven joke, at Green Day’s expense; or an attempt by the Hall as some cutting, self-effacing satire. Alas, it’s no joke. It is clear, moreover, that the Foundation not only lacks familiarity with rock music, but also with the basic meaning of words: “innovation,” for instance, or “technique.” Green Day are many things, but superior musical technicians they are not; nor are they innovators in any recognized sense of the word (consider the fact that Rush were inducted in 2013, and you get a sense of the disparity here). Instead, they are yet another incarnation of that increasingly shopworn phenomenon of amateurish “three-chord wonders” that pollute the airwaves. I suppose this was quaint in the 50s and early 60s, and perhaps even made some kind of sense – as a gesture of revolt against the excesses of progressive and corporate rock – in the punk era of the late 70s. In the 21st century, however, in the wake of decades of increasingly sophisticated pop song writing, new technology, new media, and a globalized musical culture that has widened our musical horizons and allowed us

to cultivate richly kaleidoscopic tastes, it’s just sad. In the end, it might be best if we ignored the grandiose claims of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerning its criteria for inclusion. Instead, we should focus on the last word in that institution’s name: “Fame.” Green Day remains a “famous,” and even a celebrity, band. Their fame increased exponentially in the wake of their American Idiot album of 2004, which levied harsh criticism against then American president G. W. Bush and his foreign policy. Green Day, then, probably ended up on the ballot for consideration in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by dint of fame – it simply can’t be because of any musical innovations, or technical excellence, or lasting influence – buoyed by a rowdy, naïve, right-side-ofhistory political activism. Consider, finally, David Bowie (inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996) and his timeless meditation on the emptiness of rock and roll celebrity. “Fame,” wrote Bowie in his eponymous 1975 song, “puts you there where things are hollow.” As a critical reflection on the fleeting and superficial nature of fame, the song is spot on: as Bowie goes on to sing, “…what you like is in the limo…what you get is no tomorrow.” Fame corrupts, is fleeting, and is meaningless as an end in itself. As a criterion for induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which it clearly appears to be, “fame” ensures the elevation and sanctification of that which is hollow and easy – hello, Green Day – over that which has the potential to reflect the very best human qualities that manifest themselves in the arts, namely talent, creativity and imagination.

Ice Cream Carnival takes edge off winter

Three local athletes preparing to compete in Canada Winter Games By Murray Green

Three Camrose athletes and a manager will be going to the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C. from Feb. 13 to March 1. Hockey player Ethan McIndoe, wheelchair basketball athlete Bradon Doll, cross-country skier Hans Asfeldt and cross-country skiing manager Tim Wintoniw all qualified for the Canada Winter Games. McIndoe plays for the Sherwood Park Kings triple-A midget team, Doll plays for Edmonton and Wintoniw is the skiing coach at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. The Canada Games are an interprovincial and territorial sports festival staged every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter. Since the Canada Games were introduced in 1967, more than 100,000 participants in over 40 sports have been involved as athletes, coaches, or officials and over 75,000 volunteers have dedicated their time to staging the event. Through innovative partnerships, the 2015 Canada Winter Games will feature the most comprehensive webcasting coverage in Canada Games history; all available on one online Canada Games portal. The webcasting will complement conventional broadcasting coverage with over 900 hours of sports coverage webcast, as well as unique human interest programming never before offered at a Canada Games. The webcasting programming will also produce a 30-minute magazine-style online show, Canada Games TV TODAY, which will air daily in both official languages during the 2015 Canada Winter Games. “Congratulations to the young athletes, coaches and staff whose hard work and dedication led to their selection to represent our province at the Canada Games,” said Maureen Kubinec, Minister of Culture and Tourism. “Albertans are very proud of all their athletes, coaches, volunteers and supportive fans who help our province remain a leader when it comes to the pursuit of excellence in sport and a more active Alberta.” This talented team of Alberta’s best is comprised of 245 athletes competing in 19 sports. They will be supported by 73 coaches and managers, along with 19 mission staff. “This exceptional group of athletes has a great combination of ability, experience and commitment and we are proud to have them represent us at this competition,” said John Short, chair of the Alberta Sport Connection. “These athletes have achieved success provincially, and many of them nationally and these Games represent the next step in their quest to compete at the international level.” Team Alberta is comprised of the best young athletes in our province. The youngest team member is 11 year-old Emma Bulawka, a figure skater from Edmonton. Team Alberta’s involvement in the Games is coordinated by Alberta Sport Connection. The mission is to enhance, advocate and inspire participation and partnerships as Albertans strive for excellence in sport.
