Century Award presented to CRE Council will wait for transportation master plan before making decision on barricades

City council has reconfirmed its decision to wait until the new transportation master plan is approved before making a decision on what to do with the barricades in the West Grandview area.

“I would prefer we let our motion stand,” said Councillor Agnes Hoveland at a committee of the whole council meeting Feb. 17. “We need to have information and recommendation from the consultants regarding all of our traffic calming issues.”

City administration is hoping to see work on the transportation master plan start within the next month.

“We are hoping to have our request for proposals issued by the end of this calendar month,” said engineer Jeremy Enarson. “After they submit the proposals we will review them and award the work.”

The consultants will be asked to do some larger scale traffic modelling before making recommendations on whether or not the area should be permanently closed to through traffic.

“There are going to be some impacts,” said Enarson.

Open houses

The transportation master plan will give West Grandview residents the chance to have their say at open houses.

“I don’t know if there would be a statutory public hearing per se but realistically there would be open houses,” said Enarson. “There is no statutory requirement to do so (have a public hearing) as far as I know, but I could be mistaken. It is not a formal road closure in terms of closing a roadway and then parcelling the land and selling it to somebody. If you have a non statutory open house then people can come from all different sides. Right now it is whoever signs up for public commentary who can make their opinions heard, as opposed to having a set time of this is when the issue is going to be dealt with, when input is going to be received.”

The transportation master plan will to take a broad city-wide view on traffic calming measures and policies rather than concentrating in just the West Grandview area.

“While it might talk about a specific issue we generally try to expand that to include potential policies that the City might have around traffic calming that could be applied in more than one area of the city,” said Enarson.

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Verlyn Olson presented an Alberta Agricultural Society Century Award to the Camrose Regional Exhibition at the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies convention Feb. 6.

The Camrose Regional Exhibition (CRE) and Agricultural Society began in September, 1908, with the objective of encouraging improvements in agriculture, horticulture and homemaking, and improving the quality of life for members and the agricultural community. To meet these objectives the Society established the Camrose Summer Fair, which was a major event in the community, providing a showcase for excellence in agricultural production and

a forum for the introduction of new technology, equipment and production methods.

From 1908 to 1980, the CRE was located on the south side of Camrose. As the city grew, much of the residential development took place on the fairgrounds.

This resulted in the relocation of the site to the east side of Camrose in 1980. The Society continued to operate on the original site until 1988, when all operations were moved to the new site.

Construction of the Exhibition Centre was completed in the fall of 1988 and provided the impetus for the growth that fuels the CRE today.

These simple beginnings signaled the evolution of the CRE into a dynamic organization based on a philosophy

of innovation in programming and dedication to superior customer service.

The CRE is the largest facility on Highway 13 and serves a client base that is local, provincial, national and international in scope.

The CRE offers all of the traditional programs and services associated with the exhibition business and a number of innovative services and programs which are unique to the CRE. Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development honours the significant contributions Agricultural Societies make to their communities by formally recognizing those societies that have been incorporated for 100 years or more with the Alberta Agricultural Society Century Award.

Administration to research 48 Avenue flashers

City of Camrose administration wants to do more research before making any recommendations on the possible installation of pedestrian actuated flashers on 48 Avenue.

City engineer Jeremy Enarson told committee of the whole council last week that administration needs to take a step back and have an internal planning meeting in order to evaluate what it might cost to install the signals and where they might do the best good.

“We want to make sure that we take a look at it in a very thoughtful manner,” said Enarson.

A preliminary report from Camrose Public Works estimates the cost of installing a solar powered pedestrian actuated warning system from Alberta Traffic Supply to be anywhere from $12,746 to $16,710.

“That is the cost of installing a post on either

side of the highway,” said Enarson. “The width of the roadway would probably require that we have more than just the installations on the two outsides (of the road) but also something in the median so that you catch the eye of the drivers who are going forward and not really looking as much to the sides.

The signals on the outside would catch the attention of people on the outside lanes but generally not so much on the inside lanes. We would need something that would extend over top of the roadway so it is in the driver’s normal field of view.”

Enarson noted that the signals would be designed so that they would only work when a pedestrian is wanting to cross the road.

“You don’t want something that is going to be flashing 24/7 because otherwise the drivers are just going to get used to it and potentially, unfortunately, are not going to pay atten-

tion to it anymore. It is generally better practice to have something that is pedestrian activated so that the lights would only be going when the pedestrian is there.”

Enarson believes the final cost of installing the signals will be much more than the estimates if there is a need to lay a connecting cable under the roadway.

The suggested locations for the pedestrian actuated signals are 48 Avenue and 56 Street (between Humpty’s and the Church of God) and 48 Avenue and 55 Street (close to the Bill Fowler Centre).

“At 57 Street there is basically a little pork chop island so that the pedestrians actually have a small area of refuge before they have to cross the five lanes of traffic,” said Enarson. “At the intersection immediately east we don’t have that pork chop island option so

they are actually crossing six lanes at that location as opposed to five.”

City administration has to balance the requests for safer crossings on 48 Avenue with the need to keep traffic flowing at a steady pace.

“Every time you do an installation such as this you are slowing the traffic down and making it harder for an arterial road to function as an arterial road,” said Enarson.

The City also has to deal with those citizens who feel it is better to have a crossing at one location than somewhere else.

“Anytime you put a crossing in at one location and abandon another there is going to be an uproar from the people,” said Enarson.

Existing policy will be taken into account in the final recommendation. “We do have a number of locations throughout the city where our

pedestrian crossing volumes are higher than what we are looking at either of these two locations,” said Enarson. “It is just that the cross product of the pedestrians and the vehicles are quite high because of the vehicle traffic.”

City councillor Max Lindstrand commended administration for looking into the signals.

“This certainly has been an area identified by people as being dangerous to cross and particularly, as we are trying to make our city more walkable, this certainly plays into that,” said the councillor.

“I strongly support what your approach is because we have to make sure we do it right and make sure that we meet the standards so that we don’t open ourselves up to other lawsuits because of our negligence and doing it in a manner that isn’t certified as correct.”

The plan will also be taking a look at reducing traffic noise and whether it makes more sense to put up berms versus sound walls. “On things like that the city does not have a policy per se,� said Enarson. “We would be asking the consultants to take a look at some of those types of issues so we can come back to council at a future point in time and say, based on the recommendations, these are the practices we see elsewhere, this is how it potentially would be applied in Camrose.�

Traffic volumes Along with the other matters, the new transportation master plan will review traffic volumes in the city and the anticipated growth areas, and present recommendations of where upgrades will be required. “They will put certain time frames on their recommendations in terms of which ones are needed sooner and which can wait,� said Enarson in response to a question from councillor PJ Stasko regarding what might be happening to the north ring road. “They wouldn’t necessarily be focusing on the north ring road in isolation but would be dealing with it as part of the larger upgrades. For instance, the last transportation master plan identified a number of projects, including the north ring road as a priority project, and identified timelines that they (consultants) would recommend. Now, of course, those projects can only be advanced and delayed at council’s consideration.�

What’s water in your desert?

Recently I flew into Palm Springs, California for a week with dear friends. One of the amazing sights from the air is the “patchwork quilt” appearance of the flatbottomed valley that is surrounded by mountains.

On one side of a road will be a rectangular or square patch of lush green – golf course fairways, palm trees, fountains…looks like paradise. And then across the road, a rectangular or square patch of brown desert – sand, scrubby sage, some cacti...looks like barren desert, which it is.

Both aspects have their charm. The contrast got me thinking about “water in the desert.”

I admired the resilience of plants, animals and people that can survive in the desert. With scarcely any water, they have adapted. Their colouring, their form, their biological processes – everything about their design enables them to survive and flourish in conditions which would kill less tenacious life forms.

The lush watered areas also have their charm.

I find them easier to be in, but also felt uneasy about so much water being used to maintain such unnatural greenness in the desert. I didn’t want to be cranky about it – it wasn’t my home – but something seemed “not quite right.”

My “water in the desert” reflections led me in two directions.

First, what is it that enables living creatures to survive in challenging environments? Adaptability seems to be the main requirement – the ability to modify the ways of carrying out life’s functions in order to work within the environment.

I thought about the times I’ve been willing to be adaptable in less-than-optimum conditions. There’s something powerful about looking adverse circumstances in the face, accepting them as they are, and modifying as necessary to be able to function.

I also thought about times I have expended a fair bit of energy railing against conditions as they were and resisting the need to modify as necessary.

That was a lot of wasted energy that would have better been used to adapt. The most uncomfortable part of remembering those resistant times was not only the ridiculousness of trying to deny or face down reality, but that I couldn’t be sure I’d never be that ridiculous again!

Second, when I considered the lush green areas and the amazing transformation caused by water, I started asking myself, “What’s water in my desert?”

What are the conditions that enable me to flourish and grow, to thrive and contribute even in challenging circumstances? That was very fun to think about. I made a couple of decisions about things to add, things to subtract and things to change in my life when I returned home. Though I’ve been known to rant and rail, I decided that ranting is not nearly as fun as flourishing!

So what’s water in your desert? What creates lushness in your life? What helps you flourish and grow, thrive and contribute, even in challenging circumstances? And what might you want to add, subtract or change in your life, in light of changes in your world?

Say no to sales tax

All Albertans must oppose any Conservative efforts to implement a provincial sales tax.

Taxation is not the way to end or prevent a recession.

There is an economic theory which states during times of prosperity the government should raise taxes as people making money can afford those taxes, and those taxes should be saved for times of need. Of course, due to Conservative financial mismanagement the PCs cut taxes during the boom but put not one penny into the

Heritage Trust Fund, nor did they build schools, take care of seniors, or support municipal infrastructure.

The theory says during recessions governments should reduce taxes, stimulate business and create jobs. Our Prentice instead is considering borrowing money, raising personal income taxes, bringing in a sales tax, cutting jobs and reducing services.

When the Premier tells us “The circumstances that we’re in are the most serious financial circumstances we have seen in this province in 25 years, if not fifty, and certainly they will affect every Albertan,” one has to ask “why is this happening?” The quick answer is falling oil prices but in reality it is because the Conservatives have been plagued with entitlement scandals horribly abusing your money. They have provided huge subsidies to the petroleum industries but practically nothing to the green economy and alternative energy sources. Also since Klein, no resource revenue has gone into the Heritage

Trust Fund. The province has been collecting a miserable nine per cent average for oil royalties. Norway, during this same time with the same resource has a sovereignty trust fund nearing $1 trillion.

Yes, the Conservatives have failed us time after time and now want to tax us for their mistakes. All Albertans must say No Way! It is time to elect a new government which will not raise personal taxes but will raise the royalty rates, will end corporate giveaways, will invest in green energy industry to create jobs, and refocus on agriculture. We should re-invest in our cattle and dairy industries, forestry and tourism.

The drop in oil prices should not have been a problem, but since it is, it’s time to get rid of the Conservative government.

True Albertans will stand up against a sales tax, program cuts, job losses, entitlement and financial incompetence. Bring on the next election!

BRCF presents grant to Camrose Open Door

Battle River Community Foundation vice-chair Vivianne Grue presents a cheque for $1,000 to Camrose Open Door Association executive director Randall Nickel.

The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $10,000 to the Camrose Open Door Association.

The grant is from income earned on the Beverly Pearson Penner and Don Penner Fund and from the Community Fund. This grant will assist with the cost of renewing accreditation of the Open Door. The Association’s programs, directed at assisting youth in East Central Alber-

ta, cannot operate without accreditation.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects in East Central Alberta which benefit communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have cre-

ated endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $2,900,000 to support important programs such as those operated by the Camrose Open Door Association.

Rotary Daybreak hosts Days for Girls Project Over 1,700 pieces of fabric were stitched together when the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak hosted and organized a sewing project in support of the Days for Girls project at Certified Training Group Jan. 31.

“Over 50 women, men and children took part in the marathon sewing production assembly line with the objective of providing safe, sanitary and sustainable feminine hygiene kits for girls and young women in all parts of the world,” said Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak president Anna Harder. “The original goal of 60 kits was surpassed – 65 complete kits are now on their way, along with education to reduce the stigma of menstruation, keep girls in school and train others to make the kits.”

Rotary and the Days for Girls Camrose Team expressed a special thank you to Quilting from the Heart and Janice Steiner for their commitment to and generous financial support of this project.

Camrose Legion celebrates flag’s anniversary

By Murray Green Ragnar Gislason of the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion performed the honour just like he did 50 years ago.

Legion president Bob Burt and Comrade Gislason lead a group of members in raising the Canadian flag on the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada on Feb. 15.

Gislason was part of a ceremony that raised the first Canadian flag at a school in West Germany back in 1965.

“It was honour back then just as it is today,” said veteran Gislason.

The event was celebrated across Alberta and Canada.

“The national flag of Canada stands for a nation that is peaceful and free and for a people who are compassionate, strong and welcoming to all. It’s important to take the time to honour this cherished symbol and to reflect on all that it means to us as Canadians,” said Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Shetland sheepdog achieved lofty goals in 2014

By Murray Green Booker was a busy dog in 2014. The Shetland sheepdog and owner Karen M. Gibson, of the Gwynne area, went to 63 obedience trials and entered 126 competitions from last January to September.

While traveling 20,000 km across British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Booker (his full name is Booker Can Ch. WillowGlyn Blue Book, CGN, CD RAE7) was a partner who never once let the team down.

“We achieved all of the 2014 goals that I set,” said Karen. He was the number one Shetland sheepdog in Canada, number one in Herding Group in Canada (out of 29 breeds) and fourth in the All Breeds class in Canada (out of 208 breeds). His winnings were all in Rally Obedience.

Booker is owned, trained and exhibited by Karen.

“Between October 2012 and September 2014, Booker has earned 12 obedience titles on top of a Canadian championship he was awarded in April 2010 for a total of 13 titles,” she said.

“Booker has competed in 158 obedience competitions and never once disqualified. However, the

handler disqualified three times,” admitted Karen.

“He has won with many perfect scores and many high scores.”

Booker, who is considered an elite dog in Rally Obedience in Canada,

accomplished this in less than two years.

“This from a dog, that I was told by a vet, would never be an obedience competitor and that I had made a mistake in my choice of dog. His calm,

cool, collected disposition had been considered as shyness. I went with my gut and experience and the rest is history,” said Karen proudly.

In conjunction with the Battle River Canine Association, Karen put together an obedience team and began conducting classes in October 2014.

Her goal for this year is to compete in Cara Obedience competitions.

This February the duo will begin pet therapy work in schools, senior facilities, psychiatric facilities, airport, courts, personal residences, penal institutions, with handicapped people and will participate in Canadian Cancer Society functions.

“I also want to initiate a Pet Therapy Reading Program in local schools,” she said. “Booker was accepted by Alberta Film Animals and we are awaiting our first assignment in film and advertising. We want to continue giving exhibitions and conducting obedience classes.”

Booker remains an integral part of the breeding program of WillowGlyn Shetland Sheepdogs Permanently Registered north of Gwynne.

Carmina at performing arts centre On Thursday, March 5, the University of Alberta Augustana Choirs, the Camrose Camerata, and the Edmonton Youth Choir will create a 170-person ensemble to present Carl Orff’s thrilling masterpiece, Carmina Burana, in the new Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. The choirs will be joined by well-known Alberta musicians, the Edmonton Youth Choir, soloists Kathleen Corcoran, Roderick Bryce, and Timothy Shantz, pianists, Dr. Roger Admiral and Dr. Leanne Regehr, conductor, Dr. John Wiebe, and the Orion Percussion Ensemble.

Cst. Matt Wilton named 2015 Top Cop in Camrose Constable Matthew Wilton is an extraordinary volunteer in our community!

When he is on duty, he is a Forensic Identification Specialist for our Camrose Police Services and in his spare time, he volunteers for a myriad of organizations, both in Camrose and in the surrounding communities.

Matt, a seven-year veteran of the Police Service, was recognized and nominated by far too many organizations to list here, but they included the Special Olympics, the annual Charity Checkstop, the Food Bank and the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which also raises funds for Special Olympics. His nominators also included Staff Sgt. Rick Marcinkowski, the inaugural winner of the Kiwanis Top Cop Award.

Matt’s community service also includes volunteering on the board of the Family Violence Action Society and the Family Violence Response Council. He is an active participant in the Victim Services group, which is a police-based community service group that provides support, information and referrals to victims of crime and tragedy in Camrose.

Beyond the actual physical acts of volunteering, this member of our city’s police force also provides personal support to McHappy Days, Tim Horton’s Camp Day, The Wise Owls (Senior Fraud Prevention) and PACE Outreach School. In the rest of his “spare” time, he runs relays for a number of organizations, raising funds as he does so.

Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas, once said that, “Unselfish and noble actions are the most radiant pages in the biography of souls.” We believe that Matt lives up to this declaration with his volunteer work in our city!

Wilton named Kiwanis Top Cop for 2015

Const. Wilton has ser ved in the police department for seven years as a forensic identification specialist and has volunteered his spare time in the community for a number of organizations.

Not only has he been dedicated to his job, he assists Camrose Special Olympics, Charity Check Stop, Camrose Neighbor Aid Center’s food bank and the Law Enforcement Torch Run to name a few.

Const. Wilton’s community ser vice also includes volunteering on the board of the Family Violence Action Society and the Family Violence Response Council. His is an active member in the Camrose Victim Services group, which are not sponsored by any ser vice groups. They are accepting donations to be put towards the Camrose and area program to help support local victims of crime and tragedy. Gregg Shute died in a car accident and his friends started a tribute day to honour his love for music and the local community. The first two events were held on backto-back years. Now the event is held every two years to ease the burden of asking for donations.

Report to the Com Message from Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Last year Covenant Health facilities celebrated 150 years of health care in Alberta with the theme “Visions of Hope.” The St. Mary’s celebration included our Community and Foundation Board hosting a chapel service on June 13, 2014 to bless their donation of the new altar and lectern. Our board commissioned a local artist to create fabric art to commemorate and celebrate the rich history of 150 years of Catholic health care in Alberta and the 90th anniversary of St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose. 12 stained glass windows were commissioned by St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and donated to the chapel by Drs. Alan and Suna Smith. The leadership council planted a garden on the south side of the hospital and created a tribute wall across from admitting. The team placed the 150th banner on the outside of St. Mary’s Hospital. In 2014, Covenant Health was recognized as a top Alberta employer. This prestigious award recognizes Alberta companies on the criteria of work atmosphere, community involvement, employee benefits, learning opportunities, and professional development. It is shaping up to be a great year for St. Mary’s Hospital.

Accreditation is a process that helps our organization meet the challenges of the future. This fall, Accreditation focused on leadership, infection, prevention & control, medication management and reprocessing and sterilization of reusable medical devices. The surveyors highlighted many strengths and a strong foundation is being established in medication management where areas for improvement were identified. In the fall of 2015, Accreditation Canada will be focused on obstetrical care, surgery, child health and mental health.

Our new manager of food service, Jay Nair, and his staff have made many well-received dietary changes. Soups are now made from fresh ingredients and vegetable soups contain homemade stock. Over 80% of entré meals and 98% of deserts are now made by our dietary staff. Our dietary department is concentrating their efforts on reducing our reliance on disposables to be more environmentally responsible.

As of March 31, 2014, St. Mary’s Hospital has 157 volunteers within volunteer services, St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary and spiritual care. This year, palliative care has seen help from many hands. In July, a survey was conducted to elicit feedback about St. Mary’s Hospital volunteer program and we found an opportunity to provide more learning opportunities and assistance, especially in understanding dementia.

Milestones Long Service awards were distributed to staff members, physicians and volunteers on March 6, 2014, at a recognition banquet. This year, seven physicians, four volunteers and 36 staff members were each recognized for 10 years of service or more, and 28 individuals were recognized for five years of service at a separate event. Jeanette Campbell was the successful recipient of the St. Mary’s Hospital Sisters of Providence award.

The Gallup survey was conducted in Nov. 2014, to capture information regarding staff engagement. This valuable feedback from our front line staff will assist us to change and modify the work environment; therefore better meeting our staff’s needs.

Last year, St. Mary’s Hospital welcomed a new chaplain; Jim Wilson was hired on Sept. 25, 2014. Jim is a country boy at heart and lived in the country until 10 years ago. In his words, “I am familiar with the rural way of life and the importance of relationships within a community, including staff and local clergy.” The hospital chapel is open 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week for meditation, reflection and prayer.

We celebrated our 90th anniversary along with the milestone of 150 years of Catholic health care in Alberta. This is because of the innovation and persistence of our leadership team, staff and physicians. New services and support

Nov. 18th was the official opening of the ambulatory care clinic. This clinic was designed to better meet the needs of ambulatory care patients, to provide scheduled ambulatory care in a timely manner in an appropriate space and to better address the workload needs throughout the facility. This clinic will allow for the treatment of six scheduled patient procedures three days per week.

This spring, St. Mary’s Hospital will be working with Alberta Health Services to upgrade the helipad to accommodate new STARS helicopters. The helipad upgrades are required as the new helicopters have a larger wingspan that increases the speed at which they can travel. In 2013-14, St. Mary’s Hospital called on the STARS team to assist with patient transport on 12 occasions.

St. Mary’s and the Cardiovascular Health and Stroke Strategic Clinical Network are collaborating on a pilot project to enhance stroke care in Camrose and area. This program consists of two components, Stroke Unit Equivalent Care (SUEC) and Early Supported Discharge (ESD). SUEC is enhancement for stroke care while in hospital (above existing primary stroke services). The ESD program is designed for mild to moderate stroke survivors to receive comprehensive stroke rehabilitation in their own homes rather than in a rehabilitative hospital setting.

Our team and resources will be shared between these two components to expand stroke Hospital Expenditures patient care and to improve the quality of care provided. The ultimate goal is to help stroke Support Services patients return to their activities in their homes 20% and communities.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a condition involving an irregular heart rhythm. Individuals with AFib are about five times more likely to have a stroke than patients without this diagnosis.

St. Mary’s Hospital is involved in a research project which represents the first phase of a larger program of research concerning AFib. The purpose of this study is to: 1) determine the accuracy of nurse-led pulse checks in patients with no diagnosis of AFib. 2) examine why patients may not be following through with the physician recommended test.

Female breaches conditions of probation February 19

A complaint was received from staff of a licensed premise that an intoxicated female was refusing to get into a taxi. It was determined that the female was currently on court ordered conditions to be inside a licensed premise. The female was arrested and later released on a charge of breaching a condition of her probation.

A 32 year old Camrose man was arrested on numerous outstanding warrants related to possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and proceeds of crime. Upon his arrest, it was determined that he was breaching his court ordered conditions by being behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and possessing a cell phone. The male was brought before a justice of the peace and held in custody.

While on patrol, police located a male urinating in a public place. It was determined that the male was breaching his court ordered conditions by possessing a cell phone. A 22 year old has been charged with breaching conditions of his recognizance and is being held in custody awaiting his bail hearing.

“O Fortuna!” So begins the massive choral masterpiece Carmina Burana – with a raucous invocation of fickle Fortune, the “Empress of the World.” Composed in 1935-36 by Orff, Carmina Burana is one of the most important and most popular choral works of the 20th century: its enduring presence in concert halls and on countless film, television and, more recently, video game scores readily attests to this fact. On March 5, history will be made at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on the Augustana campus, as Carmina Burana receives its Camrose premiere, in a performance featuring a massed choir of 170 singers, vocal soloists, two grand pianos and a percussion ensemble.

Carl Orff himself, born in 1895, was a composer whose musical interests increasing turned towards the past as he came of age in the early decades of the 20th century.

As a young musician, he was strongly attracted the music of contemporary composers like Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss, but soon developed a fascination with the culture and aesthetics of Ancient Greece and in the music of the Renaissance. At the same time, Orff began creating his Schulwerk, an approach to music education that spread around the world following the Second World War and is still used today.

Orff continued composing up to his death in 1982, but his works of the post-war era – including a number of stage works on topics and texts from classical antiquity – are not particularly popular and are rarely staged today.

Carmina Burana was and remains Orff’s bestknown work. It consists of

24 Medieval poems, in Latin and Middle High German, selected from a large collection of satirical poems written by monks between the 11th and 13th centuries. The poems Orff selected from the collection address subjects that were front-and-centre in Medieval society: the power and unpredictability of fate, the transience of life, the joys of pastoral life, and the pleasures and torments of lust, gambling, and drinking. The music is melodically simple, often reminiscent of chant, but is imbued with a rollicking, primitivistic, pulse-pounding energy that perfectly matches the passionate, subversive and sometimes downright raunchy texts of the poems.

Carmina Burana marked Orff’s first major success as a composer: following its premiere in Frankfurt in 1937, it immediately became one of the most popular pieces of classical music in Germany; after the war, it grew into one of most frequently performed pieces in the international classical

music repertory. An important aspect of the history of Orff and Carmina Burana – one that cannot be overlooked – has to do with the fact that the work was composed in Germany during the Nazi era, and that Orff remained in Hitler’s Germany and continued to work as a musician. It has taken some time for both the composer and the work to shake off the taint of Nazism, but it seems clear now that Orff was not ideologically aligned with the Nazis – he did not work for the regime, a – and nor does Carmina exhibit any of the unwholesome folknationalism associated with the Nazi aesthetic, notwithstanding its popularity in Nazi Germany.

On the question of the Nazi roots of Carmina Burana, Alex Ross, the music critic for The New Yorker magazine, has argued that, given its universal popularity and ubiquity, it not only a work with no bad message, but in fact a work “with no message whatsoever.” This is surely not the case, especially as we find ourselves in the wake of grim budget news and languishing in the doldrums of late winter in Alberta. I would argue that Orff’s glorious Medieval-themed cantata resonates with potent contemporary messages, as it entreats us to be ever mindful that fate is “savage and empty,” a turning wheel upon which we may all find ourselves, one minute on the bottom, the next on top; to remember that money doesn’t last when you spend too much time in the tavern; but most importantly to revel in the fires of new love and to take pleasure in the return of “the happy face of Spring.”

A brazen 29-year-old female is in police custody facing numerous charges after the Camrose Police Service received two separate complaints of robbery. At 11:35 a.m. Feb. 12 the woman entered Cheers and Beers liquor store pointing a handgun at the lone employee demanding money.

About 20 minutes later the same female entered McSliquors liquor store, pointing the firearm at staff demanding money.

The suspect fled both locations with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police located her in a nearby residence with the assistance of a witness to the second robbery, where she surrendered without incident. A search of this property resulted in the recovery of the money and locating a pellet pistol.

Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will hosting a series of workshops over the next month to help gardeners wishing to take their skills to the next level.

“They are going to focus on the healthy management of gardens,” said Camrose Railway Station and Park chair Glenys Smith.

The Fundamentals of Edged Hand Tools on Saturday, Feb. 28, will have Takota Coen from Grass Roots Family Farm and Deep Roots Design demonstrate how to safely use a variety of hand tools designed for cutting, chopping and coppicing, including the serrated sickle (rice knife), bill hook, scythe, machete, axe, knife and weeding hoe.

“Those who register will be able to take home a free sharpening stone,” said Camrose Railway Station and Park education coordinator Eleanor White.

Fundamentals of Permaculture on Thursday, March 26 will have Coen explain a methodical holistic garden design process that integrates elements which serve more than one purpose.

“The participants will be able to see how he has integrated these principles as he shares about his philosophy and the Grassroots Family Farm,” said White.

Creating a Healthy Garden on Saturday, April 11, will have Smith and soil specialist Bernice Kadatz explain combinations of organic practices that result in health gardens managed without synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, including attention to soil, building proper plant care, and protective techniques for pest control.

“We are going to show that the greater the biological diversity of a garden the less likely it is to have problems with pests and weeds,” said Smith, who is an organic gardener.

“The focus will be on healthy soils, preventive intervention for bug control like companion planting and physical controls.”

The practices that will be taught in Creating a Healthy Garden are the same ones that are used at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park which, as an evolving eco-centre, is committed to promoting research-based practices that support the return of soils and communities to healthy diverse environments where all living creatures are integrated into nature’s design.

“The Station partners with other communities to share information and set guidelines for organic practices that are value based on the belief that we can make a difference by producing food and beautiful areas without destroying or abusing water, air or land,” said Smith.

The Station also documents how the impact of the harmonious energy created by the gardens affects the people who work in and visit them.

The workshops are designed to supplement rather than duplicate the Organic Master Gardening program that is offered by the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park in conjunction with Gaia College.

“We have had a lot of people who are interested in taking the Organic Master Gardener program but we have also had a lot of people interested in taking audit or take just one section of it,” said White. “They wanted to learn more about container gardening or a subject that isn’t covered by the course, so we felt there was a need to start stand along workshops for gardeners.”

The Organic Master Gardener program currently has 12 students over the age of 18 who are receiving instruction from a variety of professional instructors.

“About half of the students are from Camrose and about half are from outside of Camrose,” said White. “We have Camrose residents as well as owners of farms and acreages.”

Students are required to do at least ten hours of practicum work in the gardens at the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park.

“It is good for the students but it is also good for the Station,” said Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday February 28, 2015 from Solid Rock Lutheran Church with Rev. Melody Small, Rev. Steve Holomis, and Rev. Collin Hauch officiating.

Interment will follow in Parkland Cemetery.

Victory garden

The Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park has completed the preparation work for its Victory Garden and will be holding a dedication ceremony for it in the early part of July. Crops in the Victory Garden will be rotated yearly, according to an established plan, based on information that has been gathered on companion planting.

The initial focus of the Station and Park’s gardens was to recreate and visually interpret a historic station garden and to develop a Garden Railway with historic Canadian Northern model buildings, mostly depicting the railway sites that the Canadian Northern Society has restored. Cottage gardens are full of heritage plants that pioneer gardeners would have grown, many of which are native to the area.

Camrose Nordics midget coach Jason Goodhope, player Justin Goodhope and the rest of the team presented the $1,000 raised in the Black and Blue campaign to Family Violence Action Society treasurer Lynne Kennedy and secretary Cassie McCaffrey. The money will be used for violence, bullying and anger issue programs. The midget team raised the most funds for the Black and Blue program.

Older adults who struggle with difficult family relationships often feel alone, afraid, and helpless to change their circumstances. They may feel like their difficulties are their own fault or that they are the only ones who experience such struggles. Unfortunately, elder abuse is all too common and can take many forms. Elder abuse is any deliberate action or lack of action that causes harm to an older adult within a relationship of intimacy, dependency, or trust. The intent of the abuse is to gain power, control and induce fear. Abuse may be financial, verbal, emotional, physical, sexual, medicinal, spiritual, violation of rights, neglect or a combination of these. It is generally caused by a relative, close friend or caregiver and can affect any senior, regardless of socio-economic background, health status or cultural heritage. Various Canadian studies indicate that between four and eight per cent of older adults in Canada will likely experience abuse. In the City of Camrose, where nearly one fifth of our population is senior, about 250 people will be directly affected.

Although incidents of elder abuse often occur behind closed doors, it is essential that all Albertans realize elder abuse is not a private matter. Elder abuse is everyone’s business, and we all need to work together to prevent and address it. Neighbors, friends and family often observe things that don’t seem right, but may not know what to do about it. “It’s Not Right! Neighbors, Friends and Family,” is a 90-minute presentation that empowers people to respond in a simple, caring, supportive way that respects the dignity of the senior to make his or her own choices. “It’s Not Right,” will be presented by Family Violence Action Society on March 18, at 7 p.m., at Camrose Community Centre, second floor. The 2015 GMC Canyon at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC is an all-new midsize truck that redefines the segment and raises the bar for everything from horsepower and efficiency to refinement.

“The all-new Canyon is the segment’s first premium midsize truck, delivering classleading efficiencies with the brand’s signature refinement,” said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer principal Will McClellan. “It’s an efficient sized maneuverable package for customers who want the cargo hauling and trailer versatility of a truck without the size of a fullsize pickup.”

Canyon is offered in base, SLE and SLT models, in 2WD and 4WD, and with an aggressively styled All-Terrain package offered on SLE models. It includes 17-inch painted aluminum wheels wrapped with all-terrain tires, a body-colour grille surround with horizontal chrome bars, a body-colour rear bumper, front tow hooks, hill descent control, and specific suspension tuning. It also includes a power-adjustable front passenger seat.

Customer-focused technologies include available OnStar 4G LTE connectivity, segment-first available driver alert features such as forward collision alert, lane departure

warning and a standard rearvision camera.

OnStar with 4G LTE and its standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the car is on and comes with a three-month/ three gigabyte data trial, whichever comes first.

Pure GMC Inside and out, the GMC Canyon is pure GMC, with a quiet refined interior distinguished by premium materials and commanding exterior presence that emulates the technology-infused design aesthetic introduced on the 2014 Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD models.

Bold front-end styling incorporates the segment’s only standard projector beam headlam.ps and GMC’s signature LED daytime running lamps on all models.

Three body configurations are offered: an extended cab model with a six-foot two-inch bed, a crew cab with a five-foot two-inch bed, and a crew cab with a six-foot two-inch bed.

With the tailgate down, the longer bed allows eight-foot long items to be hauled within the vehicle.

Triple sealed doors inlaid in the body sides result in improved aerodynamic performance and a quiet interior.

The segment-first EZ Liftand-Lower locking tailgate

uses an internal torsion bar to make raising the tailgate easier with one hand, and a damper for more controlled lowering..

The patent-pending GearOn system is designed to fit perfectly within the bed for significant storage and hauling flexibility. It is upgradable, with modular cargo dividers and tiered storage to accommodate sheets of plywood above the wheelhouses.

Interior The Canyon’s interior design blends elements of its full-size sibling, the Sierra, with those typically found in more personal vehicles such as sports coupes, including standard front bucket seats and a centre console with a floormounted shifter. Comfort is enhanced with technologies, connectivity and other features that support owners’ daily and recreational lives, including a 3.5 inch-diagonal driver information screen in the instrument cluster (4.2 inch-diagonal multi-colour display on SLE and SLT).

GMC IntelliLink is standard on SLE and SLT models, and available on the base model. It combines with available OnStar to bring infotainment technology to Canyon at a time more and more consumers are buying smartphones. IntelliLink extends the OnStar experience from safety and security to infor-

mation and entertainment by seamlessly integrating the capability of a smartphone into the vehicle so that handheld phones may be safely stowed while driving.

Enhanced connectivity and convenience with IntelliLink includes text message support and Siri Eyes Free.

With text message support, the driver can be alerted to new messages and can have them read aloud, vide and respond to them with preset messages by voice. Siri Eyes free enables iPhone users to access Siri via the steering wheel controls and check calendar entries, have text messages read and respond to them, place calls or call up music.

Capabilities The all-new GMC Canyon delivers the capability expected of a GMC truck, including offering a greater maximum payload – 735 kg – than competitors and the segment’s best trailering rating: 3,175 kg when properly equipped.

A coil-over-shock front suspension and the segment’s first electric power steering system help give the Canyon a very responsive driving quality, with a very direct feel to driver inputs.

A 2.5 litre I-4 is standard and SAE-certified at 200 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque, with approximately 90 per cent of the peak torque

available from 2,000 to 6,200 rpm.

The available 3.6 litre delivers best-in-class 305 horsepower. Direct injection provides a more complete combustion of fuel, which helps improve efficiency and power.

Variable Valve Timing consistently boosts power by providing near-peak torque over a wider rpm range. It also contributes to Colorado having a city fuel consumption rating of 13 lites per 100 km and a highway fuel consumption rating of 9.2 litres per 100 km.

Safety With 360 degrees of available active and passive safety technologies, Canyon is designed to help keep occupants safe with standard features including six air bags, large rearview mirrors and rear-vision camera system for greater visibility, and StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, trailer sway control, hill start assist and hill descent control. A Driver Alert Package is available on SLE and SLT models and includes segmentfirst forward collision alert and lane departure warnings.

Special Olympics take on St. Albert in hoops

By Murray Green Special Olympics Camrose will be hosting basketball games against Special Olympics St. Albert on Sunday, March 1 at Sparling School.

Students from Augustana University have been offering weekly sessions with Special Olympics Camrose basketball to improve skills and prepare for the competition.

The Augustana men’s basketball team supplied valuable tips in basketball with Special Olympics Camrose on Feb. 15.

“Great fun was had by all,” said Carol Wideman, Special Olympics Camrose chair. “This is the third year that Camrose has had a Special Olympics basketball program. The athletes are learning great skill and technique from their Augustana coaches.”

Special Olympics Camrose is hosting games against Special Olympics St. Albert beginning at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

City of Camrose employees will be staggering their move into the new City Hall next month.

“I talked to the project manager (Jocelyn Kew) and she does feel that absolutely they would be ready for us to be in there on the seventh and eighth (of March), but there are still some things going on,” said City general manager of corporate and protective services in a report to council Feb. 17.

“Our hope is to have treasury in there when it opens to the public on March 9.

The first regular meeting of council in the new City Hall will be held on Easter Monday, April 6.

Under budget A report presented to Camrose City council in December showed that even with higher than expected project manager and architect fees due to changes in design (reworking the first three floors to maximize work flow, changing the council chambers to make best use of space and incorporating the underground parking structure), the new City Hall will be less than the budgeted cost of $18,250,000.

“The (City Hall’s) underground parkade was not in the original design so that was a change that needed to be made when council approved the inclusion of it,” said now retired City manager Damian Herle. “The short story of that is in a review of purchasing additional lands for parking as well as development of those lands it was actually a little bit cheaper to build a parkade than it was to purchase and develop other lands for parking on the ground level.”

The City realized a savings of approximately $68,360 as a result of a miscalculation of development charges at the Mirror Lake Centre.

“The City paid all of the required permits but as that was an existing facility there were no additional charges,” said Herle. “I made a mistake and estimated $70,300 when in fact the actuals were $1,940.

The City also realized savings of $34,000 on the purchase of the lots across the avenue from the province of Alberta, and $65,600 when the elevator and the audio visual equipment were removed from the main City Hall contract and sourced elsewhere.

The Camrose Kodiaks clinched first place in the southern division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League by mauling tired horses on Feb. 16.

Together with a six-game winning streak and Brooks losing two straight, the win gave the Kodiaks first place in the south. That means Camrose will receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

“This is pretty special.

It’s a goal we set out at the start of the year, to finish first and we clinched that.

It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Braeden Salverda. “That was one of our goals. We are not finished yet. We want to win the league and everything past that. It was nice to clinch, but it’s time to refocus on the next goal.”

Camrose scored four times in the opening period and went on to tame the Calgary Mustangs 6-1 without a lot of struggle. The Kodiaks out shot Calgary 44-19 including 21-4 in a first period barrage. Brett Njaa, Cole McBride, Nelson Gadoury and Landon Pilger garnered the tallies for the bears.

“I don’t think it is hard to focus on the rest of the season first. We have a good shot this year, so we will continue to work hard. We achieved one of our goals, but our main goal hasn’t been accomplished yet,” said Salverda.

The Mustangs didn’t know what hit them until they replied with a lone marker in the middle frame.

Camrose poured it on again in the third when Ryker Leer netted a shorthanded goal and Gadoury added his second of the afternoon.

clinching victory. Brooks lost two straight games to help the Kodiaks as well.

“The extra time that we will have off after the season allows to heal, work on the little things we have to, be fresher for when we do play and gives us more time to prepare for the playoffs,” explained Salverda.

“The other teams will be battling each other and we will be healing. It gives us the chance to be fresher both physically and mentally. We will be ready to compete and ready to win.”

Maintaining the drive to win has been planned all season, so a couple weeks off won’t be enough for the Kodiaks to hibernate.

“We see every practice as an opportunity to get better.

It’s one step closer to our goal and every practice that we

work hard at pushes us that much closer,” said Salverda.

The Kodiaks have made a huge turn around over last season.

“This year, we have all bought in and everything is clicking. In the dressing room we are clicking, on the ice it is working because we all bought into the hard work mentality. We are never going to get out worked,” said Salverda.

In a battle of the best two goalies in the south, McDonald proved he is on top with a 2-1 win for Camrose, Feb. 13.

The Camrose netminder turned away 28 of 29 shots he faced to record the win.

Okotoks Oilers goalie Nic Renyard stopped 36 of 38 shots.

All of the scoring in the contest was done in the second frame. After the Oil-

ers got on the scoreboard, McBride and Njaa replied providing all the offence Camrose needed.

Camrose has just two more home games left in the regular season. The Kodiaks take on the Olds Grizzlys on Feb. 24 and the Drumheller Dragons on Feb. 28 in evening games. Playoffs for the Kodiaks is expected to start around March 13.

Bear facts

A good season often leads to awards. With a huge improvement in the AJHL standings over last season and considering the Kodiaks lost three of its top scorers from the previous season, coach Boris Rybalka received a nomination for Coach of the Year.

The last time a Kodiaks squad clinched first was in

2007-08. The team made it all the way to the RBC Cup. McDonald received a nomination for Goaltender of the Year. He was the AJHL’s player of the month in September. McDonald currently has 25 wins, a 2.15 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.

“Both are deserving nominees. Coach Boris (Rybalka) is hard working and puts in a lot of time for us. It is all of the extra things that other people may not do,” said Salverda. “Devin is one of the elite goalies in this league and definitely deserves to be up for that award. He gives us confidence knowing that if we make a mistake, he is the guy that can bail us out.

Defence is important in the playoffs and if the other team can’t score it gives us the advantage.”

Augustana curling teams ready for the playoffs

All three Augustana Vikings curling teams will be seeking medals in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships in Grande Prairie from Feb. 27 to March 1.

The women’s team had an 8-4 record. MacEwan University, NAIT and Red Deer also qualified for provincials.

“I think we have curled well. We finished third and get to go to provincials, so that is really exciting. That was the goal. We have a chance at provincials if we play as hard as we can. If we are all on we are very strong,” said women’s lead Kristen Huber.

“We need to make sure we are focused and then we will be good to go.”

Since the winter bonspiel at the Rose City Curling Club on Feb. 6 and 7 the team has been preparing for the playoffs.

work really well together.

Mostly, it is focusing and making sure we make the shot we want,” said Huber.

“If we miss, we want to have good misses.”

She further explained

what a good miss is in curling. “We want to do the next best thing and avoid throwing it through the house, or hitting a guard to leave your rocks out in the open. We

want a plan B and if we miss, miss as well as you can.”

Augustana will have to beat NAIT, or MacEwan to have success at provincials.

“They both have strong teams. We can’t get down on

ourselves if they get ahead.

We have to push through it and fight our way back,” said Huber, who has curled at Augustana for the past two years. “If we can beat them it would give us quite a lot of confidence. We need to place in the top three in order to go to nationals. If we can beat one of them we will be fine.”

Huber has been curling for 10 years and was in the junior circuit before arriving in Camrose.

“Our coaching staff is really good here and we have practices three times a week,” she said. “It is really great.”

The defending silver medalists in mixed curling from Augustana finished the season tied for first place with a 9-3 record. NAIT, Olds and the host Grande Prairie team complete the field.

The Vikings men’s squad had a 5-7 record, but still finished third. MacEwan, NAIT and Olds also advanced.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Feb. 21, Camrose RCMP responded to a collision between a passenger car and railway locomotive at the railway crossing on Highway 833 a few kilometres north of Camrose.

The passenger car hit the side of train and ended up in the northeast ditch.

The lone witness at the scene and train personnel report that the train crossing lights were activated at the time of the collision.

The subsequent investigation resulted in the driver being arrested and charged for Impaired Operation of a motor vehicle. There were

no injuries sustained as a result of this collision.

Camrose County has a large number of railway crossings, and Camrose RCMP would like to remind motorists that complacency when crossing railway tracks can have devastating results.

Obeying the traffic control signs/devices at each crossing is paramount in ensuring your safety while using the roadway.

In this case the impairment of the driver was an obvious factor. Camrose RCMP want to remind everyone don’t drink and drive.

The final costs for the parking portion of the project won’t be known until spring when the lots are paved.

A total of 77 changes orders have issued at an additional cost of $629,996.11.

Forty-six per cent of the construction contingency had been used on construction only change orders.

A Feb. 2 project status report prepared by Kew indicated that work on the the roofing and data centre/communications rooms have been completed, that tile has been installed, and that the primer paint has been applied on three floors.

The report also noted that the blinds that were specified for the project came from Germany and will be installed in the late spring of 2016. “These special blinds cannot be provided by other vendor and they take approximately 10 to 16 weeks to arrive,� said Kew. The balance of landscaping will need to be done in the spring when plants are available.

The overall project expenditures are being monitored to ensure there are not project overruns.

Additional project funds are not available for items not identified in the original budget and project costs.

Volleyball squad sweeps Rustlers

The Augustana Vikings men’s volleyball team made it look easy as they defeated the Lakeland Rustlers six games in a row to win both matches on Feb. 13 and 14.

Augustana won the first match by 25-17, 26-24 and 25-19 scores. Jason Abma earned nine kills and six digs to lead the way for the Vikings.

The ACAC men’s championships will be held in Camrose Feb. 26 to 28.

The women Vikings lost their fifth match in the last six including 3-2 and 3-0 decisions to the Lakeland Rustlers. Augustana pushed the Rustlers to the brink at home. Lakeland won 25-18, 20-25, 25-7, 21-25 and 15-12.

Keri Alcorn led the way with 18 kills and Stefanie Zahara chipped in with 14 digs and 36 assists. Jenn Laskosky also collected 14 digs.

In the second match, Lakeland won three straight, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-20. Alcorn led with 12 kills and Zahara had 15 assists.

Hockey

The Augustana Vikings edged the Briercrest Clippers 3-2 in overtime and shut the same team out 4-0 in the second game in a weekend series, Feb. 13 and 14.

In the first game, Mathew Foster, Adam Johnson Devon Hobbs in overtime scored to give the Vikings the win.

Goalie Andy Williams turned away 34 of 36 shots to pick up the win. Augustana fired 45 at the Briercrest net.

The Clippers offence was shut down in the second outing, as Vikings goalie Joel Danyluk recorded the shut out. Tanner Korchinski led the offence with two goals. Single markers came from Kenny Bradley and Beau Taylor. The next Vikings home game will be a first round playoff match.

Basketball

The Augustana women’s basketball team dropped both games of a weekend series with Lakeland on Feb. 13 and 14.

The Vikings lost 66-57 and 71-50 to the top team in the north division to remain in third place. In the first game, Amanda Stonehouse held the hot hand and netted 19 points for the Vikings. Sydney Purdy collected 11 in the second outing to lead her team.

The men’s Vikings lost 80-65 with Jamin Lockert leading the offence with 17 points. In the rematch, Augustana was on the wrong side of a 71-66 score with Cameron Vicsak leading the offence with 17 points. Josh Nicol chipped in with 16 points.

The basketball teams close the home regular season on March 1 against the King’s Eagles.

Rock Around the Clock

The Camrose and District Minor Soccer Association hosted another successful Rock Around the Clock Indoor Tournament at the Community Centre fieldhouse Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

All five of the host teams finished in the top three of the competition that featured late night and early morning games for teams from across the province.

The U18 boys’ Camrose FC captured gold in a tough division. Coach Chris Howard led his team in earning the Fair Play award, while FC player Tyler Bjorgum was named the MVP in the division.

Camrose FC beat Red Deer 4-1 in the first game, tied Lac La Biche (Sir Francis and his

Knights) 2-2, tied Red Deer 3-3 and won 3-0 over the Sir Francis and his Knights in a double round robin format to win the crown.

In the U14 boys’, division Camrose emerged as the champions over teams from Stettler, Lac La Biche and Bonnyville.

U12 boys’ Camrose Claymores also won gold medals, while the Camrose United received silver in the division.

Camrose Claymores player Henock Sexton was awarded the Golden Boot award. Stettler came in third place.

The U16 girls’ team, Camrose Challengers, placed third in the division. Player Brittany Reed earned the Golden Boot award. Red Deer and Bonnyville were the top two teams.

Camrose real estate sales down last year, but property values up

The number of real estate transactions in Camrose dropped by 1.4 per cent in 2014 and went from 295 sales to 291. However, the value of properties sold increased from an average of $296,912 in Camrose to $312,068, which is a 5.1 per cent increase.

The Central Alberta Realtors Association (CARA) keeps track of the sales within central Alberta. CARA, which elected Lorna Moore as president on Dec. 15, 2014, is an association of more than 600 real estate professionals, which facilitates the marketing of real estate in Central Alberta.

“As the president of the Central Alberta Realtors Association, I am continuously asked about the 2015 housing market forecast,” said Moore.

“This is in essence the accumulation of opinions of industry leaders, professional economists, historical data, statistics and trends. It seems to be of particular interest this year in light of the changing energy sector.

“Many people in the public are questioning as to whether or not we in Alberta will feel the impact as we did in 2008.

Although no one has a crystal ball to predict exactly what the future may hold, the best that I can do is to explain that the factors that existed in 2008 are not all present in 2015. It is not enough to look strictly at the numbers of housing units that have sold in our area. We

must also take into account that the global economics are certainly stronger today than we had seen in 2008 with the United States beginning their recovery from the recession that they were experiencing.”

Moore predicts a slower start to the year. “Today, although we are heavily invested in the energy sector, it is predicted that we will have a slower start to the beginning quarter of this year followed by increased strength in sales as the year continues,’ she added.

In 2014, Central Alberta recognized an annual increase in sales of 10.6 per cent. Sales of single family dwellings that sold ranged anywhere from 1.8 per cent to as high as 32.5 per cent in some cases as well as areas that reflected a decrease as high as 3.6 per cent. Growth in most areas remained steady with the exception of a few rural areas.

Rental markets still remain tight, however with the decreased lending rates; there may be an increase in first time home buyers.

This is a historical blueprint that is measurable to predict the possibilities of future growth in our area. It is believed that we are entering into a stabilized market for 2015. Some banks have responded with decreased interest rates of lending to ensure that consumer confidence remains high.

“Although we have seen these fluctuations in the past, I am confident that Alberta will remain an ever resilient province,” said Moore.
