City trying to stay ahead of pothole problem By Dan Jensen

Camrose public works crews have waging a diff icult battle with potholes on city streets this winter. “I would have to say that the problem is a bigger one this winter because of all the freezing and thawing we have had,” said public works director Jim Kupka last week. “We have been going out and f illing them as we can.” Public works superintendent of roads and right-of-ways Ray Leiren said the pothole problem is worse this year than it has been in the past few. “ The many freeze thaw cycles that we have had have caused a lot of f laws and blemishes in the roads,” he said. “We were out doing f ixes two or three times in January and two or three times in February and now we are back at it again.” Potholes occur when the water from melting snow and ice seeps beneath the pavement through cracks caused by the wear and tear of traff ic. As the temperatures cool to freezing at night, the water becomes ice and expands below the pavement, forcing the pavement to rise. As the weight of traff ic continues to pound on this raised section – and the temperatures once again rise above freezing – a shallow divot occurs under the surface and the pavement breaks. The holes are typically f ixed by cleaning out the loose debris and f illing it with hot and cold asphalt patch. “We do t he r epa i r s i n a l l k i nd s of we at her,” sa id L ei r en , add i n g t h at c r ews wer e out doi n g r epa i r s when it wa s m i nu s 2 5. “ T he pr ob lem w it h doi n g t hem when t he t emp erat u r e i s r e a l ly c old i s t h at t her e i s st i l l wat er i n t he hole wh ic h w i l l t hen c au se it t o op en up a ga i n.” Public works tries to target the most severe problems on major roads like 48 Avenue f irst before moving into the residential areas. “We know where most of the problem areas are, but we have limited resources so it sometimes takes us a little longer to get to all of them,” said Leiren. “If people are concerned about some of the potholes they see they are welcome to call us at 780- 672-5513. If they are a foot deep then we need to know about them before they can start causing major damage to vehicles.” A long spell of dry and warm weather would go a long way towards helping the crews get and stay ahead of the game. “ The f ixes that we are doing now are just temporary,” said Leiren. “Once we get into the summer weather we can do more extensive treatments and repairs.” Provincial law outlines the City’s responsibility and liabilities and sets a reasonableness standard with respect to the repair of roadways.

City of Camrose employees Steven Boden, left, and Darrell Peterson repair a pothole on 50 Street just south of 48 Avenue. Camrose has seen an increased number of potholes this winter because of the many freeze and thaw cycles.

On the Other Hand… Digital World I am about to leave the house and so I do a bit of a double check. Automatic car starter? Check! Personal iPhone? Check! Bluetooth ear piece? Check! iPad? Check! Office Blackberry? Check! Thumb drive with files for today? Check! I close the door behind me, leaving the comfort of my Apple TV, my lounge chair and my programmable pre-set automatic coffee maker which had coffee ready when I finished my shower. The electronic controls on my thermostat and operated from my iPhone would now control the heat in my house to maximize my savings on gas, while the lighting control panel program on my iPhone insured that all of my lights were turned off. My iPhone was already programmed to preheat the house and turn the lights on as I leave work tonight to return home. I check my facebook, twitter, and linkedin accounts, read all of my e-mails (or at least the ones that look real or important) and send e-mails in return (to the ones that are really important – I hope you got one so you know I think you are important). I send a text message to a few people; and make calls on the two cell phones I carry (I’m careful not to call myself – always just get a busy signal). I am glad to be so thoroughly connected to this great network of people. (I have “friends” I have never met – not even sure who they are!!) Nothing is more satisfying than being engaged with others. As I enjoy this sense of satisfaction, I realize it is a strange name we use to describe today’s world – “digital.” It is true that with the digits of both hands I have contact with anyone and almost everyone no matter where in the world they are and no matter where in the world I am. “Both hands?” “Digital?” Wait! When was the last time I laid aside all my digital tools that keep my digits so busy that I seldom actually lend a helping hand or two? In years gone by, I used to hear about a different “digital” world. That was way back when people did interact face to face and where neighbour helped both neighbour and stranger alike, using their “own two hands.” What did we lose in the “new digital world”? Now I live with my “digital” and electronic contacts. It is common place. It is expected. It is easy. But as I think about it, this new digital world actually may distance me from true contact. On the other hand, I could discard the gadgets once in a while and use my God-given digital biology to reach out and greet someone by actually shaking their hand; I could really touch real people. If you agree – call me, text me, tweet me, fax me, instant message me, e-mail me, poke me, leave a voice mail, send me an Instagram send me. On the other hand, we could really get together and wrap our digits around a cup of coffee!

There is a strange breeze blowing that whispers bizarre things to the province, a heralding not heard before. It trumpets from the lips of the premier and finance minister; they have heard the thousands upon thousands of voices of “who-ville” clamoring, clanging and chiming as we are gesticulating for the opportunity to be taxed more. Our imminent demise, according to the great “Jim Horton,” can only be averted by the acts of taxation that he alone understands, for we are too much of a munchkin to understand. I think the

problem lies with the hearing. Where they are hearing “oh tax us” we are actually saying “no taxes”. The first thing you could do Mr. Premier, to balance the budget, is to adopt some common sense business practices when dealing with your executives. Recalling back to my time in public service and my father’s 36 years we can recount one over-arching problem. The truly very great public leaders were never allowed to exhibit their greatness because frugality, creativity, ingenuity and diligences were attributes the system does not favour. The only way to have a meaningful change that is both profound and deep is to honour those qualities that are universally recognized around the world by all peoples and nations. If you and your government honoured selflessness, servanthood, compassion, visionary thinking, and a liberal dose of common sense, your budget would be balanced with no need for an opposition party. That is truly the only way to be rid of the opposition. Rob O. Johnson Daysland

Phone scam On March 4, I received a call from someone saying that they were calling on behalf of WestJet, “following your recent trip” ...and that I had qualified for a credit of $999 with WestJet. I was suspicious, but pressed “1” to hear the message for further information. I could hear a connection being made and momentarily, an operator came on, congratulating me on qualifying for a credit of $999 with WestJet. She then asked me if I had my credit card handy. I said, “Pardon me? ” and she repeated the question. I told her I wasn’t interested and hung up. The phone number is a local one (although I was connected to another line). I called that number and an operator came on, saying that the number is not in service. I have reported the call to the Camrose Police Service and the RCMP. I want all Camrose and area residents to be aware of this “new” scam. Joan Conley, Camrose

BRCF presents grant to Town of Sedgewick

Battle River Community Foundation executive director Dana Andreassen presents a cheque to Amanda Davis, chief administrative officer for the Town of Sedgewick.

The Battle River Community Foundation has awarded a grant to the Sedgewick Municipal Library from the Jesswein Family Fund. The Jesswein Family Fund was established in 2010. Grants from the fund are designated, in part, to support the Sedgewick Municipal Library. The Battle River Commu-

nity Foundation exists to support projects, such as these, in East Central Alberta which benefit communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The

principal of these endowment funds is kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $2,900,000 to support important community services such as the Sedgewick Municipal Library.

GOLF into Swing Indoor g Sprin School Golf

Indoor Training Program 2015 In

Maximum Golf is a group-based golf training and conditioning program meant to prepare golfers for the season ahead and increase one’s ability to swing more efficiently through the ball. This program is based on the repetition of a concise set of drills that allow you to practice without requiring the use of a golf ball. These drills teach you how to swing more efficiently and with better swing mechanics. Feeling is very important to this teaching method, proven for over 30 years. In 2015, this program will be taught in a two-week (4 sessions) condensed format. Given that people live very busy lifestyles, coupled with others who like to take a winter vacation, we understand that making a commitment to a program which lasts several weeks is too difficult. The condensed format offers a wealth of skills, without being too difficult to fit into one’s schedule. To avoid disappointment, you are encouraged to book early in this extremely popular program. BILL PENNY – C.P.G.A. Master Golf Professional has been teaching Maximum Golf since the mid-’80s to over 2,500 students. Now available to the Camrose golfing community.

Camrose Royal Purple forms a society A decision by the Elks of Canada to not support the auxiliary charter it issued to the Royal Purple of Canada 100 years ago made it necessary for the Royal Purple of Canada to form a society if they wished to remain Royal Purple. The new national name will now be the Cana-

within the communities as previous,” said Royal Purple spokesperson Marion Czapp. “The Camrose Royal Purple and Camrose Elks will continue to work together within the community in the future raising funds and supporting community needs and requests.”

Council awards waste contract

City council has awarded a new residential waste collection contract in the amount of $6,999,863. BFI Canada Inc., from Edmonton, will collect from 22 curb side receptacles in downtown from April, 2015 to March, 2020 (with a negotiated extension to 2022), 6,200 residential units from April, 2015, to March 2020, and approximately 6,385 residential units from April, 2020, to March, 2022. Collections will be done manually in the first year of the contract, then transition to the automatic method using totes. “People are being injured with the normal manual collection and the contractors are saying they don’t want to do it that way anymore,” said Mayor Norm Mayer. The City could potentially see a cost savings in the range of $175,000 over the term of the contract (based on existing finance rates) by purchasing totes directly, either through a separate tender for supply and distribution, or with the assistance of the contractor. “BFI has indicated that they would be willing to negotiate the alternative of tote purchase by the City in the spring of 2016 following the roll out of the tote collection system,” said a report by City Infrastructure Services director Mark Barrett. The new contract will result in a monthly fee of approximately $2.75 being imposed on utility bills for five years, in addition to the averaged collection rate of $11.11, for a total rate averaging $13.86 (over five years). The rates do not factor in the tote maintenance, administration or franchise fee included in the residential waste collection fee. Maintenance and warranty issues associated with the direct purchase of the totes by the City is estimated at between two and four cents per monthly per unit. Councillor Bill Sears said it is important for council to get a handle on what Camrose residents will be facing in the future in the way of utility costs. “We need an idea of where they are going so that we can plan and that future increases don’t come as a surprise to council or the residents,” he said. Administration expects to bring a revised rate bylaw to City council for approval prior to the commencement of the new collection contract, which begins April 1.

The family lives in rural Drayton Valley and came to Camrose for the assessment.

Pediatric clinic works with Glenrose to get positive results By Murray Green

Technology is being used to save local families many hours on the road. Camrose and area children with developmental disabilities and their families can now access expert diagnosis in their community because of a new project involving the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton and the Camrose Pediatric Specialty Clinic. “It enables us to have access to a pediatrician and that expertise which we are not able to get in our community at the moment,” said Lorraine McPhee, a social worker on the Camrose team. “It is a different way of using resources wisely through Alberta Health Services. This allows us to have more complex assessments.” The local clinic offers rehabilitation provided by an occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech language pathologist, two psychologists, a social worker and a clinical coordinator. However, without a developmental pediatrician on

board, the clinic’s capacity to help children and their families with specialized care in this area has been limited. “The family would first go to their physician, who then would be referred to us. One of our pediatricians (from Glenrose) meets with the patient and (his or her) family to develop a plan, and then our staff can implement it from there,” she explained. “Our team here serves rural and smaller communities. We are able to help families here, which reduces the number of trips they would have to make to Edmonton. They still need to meet with the doctor, but the initial assessment can be done through video-conferencing.” The change came about last November when developmental pediatricians at the Glenrose started to collaborate remotely with the Camrose team using Alberta Health Services’ Telehealth video conferencing technology. “We do all of the leg work here in Camrose and we provide the link to the pediatrician. We are the eyes and ears for Glenrose out here in Cam-

rose. We do the assessment, then the physician will meet the patient and then we provide the services,” added McPhee. “We have had great feedback from families on the service. It may peak the interest of other rural and remote clinics across the province. We are happy to share that and I think it is creating a bit of a buzz through the medical community. It is amazing because it is clear, the doctor can see the child and it has been good, It is the new age. Partnering with the Glenrose is a great opportunity for us. It enables our team to do the follow-up work with families right here in our community. And that’s huge, when you’re looking at family-centred care. The feedback we’ve received from families has been positive.” The pilot project is helping one family a month in the first assessment. “We will re-assess our program in September and if the need is required, then we will look at more physician time if need be,” said McPhee. “These are complex children.” The breakthrough saves

time, travel and expense for patients and families It also reduces delays, the number of appointments it takes to assess children and to decide on future care. It also saves cancelling appointments when Glenrose doctors can’t drive to Camrose, or families have trouble going to Edmonton when Alberta highways are unsafe in the winter. “Camrose families would drive to the Glenrose to see a developmental pediatrician even though they have a team, in their city that has already completed the bulk of the assessment,” said Val Guiltner, director of pediatric rehabilitation at the Glenrose. “The piece that their team was missing was the developmental pediatrician — a physician with that very specialized skill set to help support the team in working with families with complicated medical and developmental needs,” added Ryan Sommer, project lead at the Glenrose. “As it’s often difficult for a Glenrose physician to travel to Camrose regularly to give outreach support. Children would

sit on a waiting list in Camrose and end up, instead, having to come to Edmonton — only to sit on our waiting list here. This project not only reduces the wait list for children to be served in their own community, but it means better accessibility in our Edmonton programs to see our own local children. Now, it’s a win-win.” The Glenrose will no longer have to create a whole new care team for a visiting Camrose child that duplicates work already done in Camrose. Typically, upon referral for assessment, infants are seen within two weeks, toddlers within six months and school-aged children within 18 months to two years. “The earlier we can see children the better,” added Guiltner. “With this project, I believe we can reduce these wait times by half.” Dustin Manchester, a father of two special needs children, said the project enables his family to see the children’s health care team during one visit in Camrose, rather than multiple visits in two cities. “The care has been really good,” Manchester said, who chose to go to Camrose, rather than the bigger city. Glenrose developmental pediatricians Dr. Lyn Sonnenberg and Dr. Gail Andrew, along with medical fellows under their guidance, now join monthly Camrose team meetings to review patient referrals and triage for appropriate services. “It’s my hope that keeping families in their local communities and getting the resources there – with me as an additional resource – is beneficial to everybody,” said Dr. Sonnenberg. “By making use of both Camrose and Glenrose resources, there’s more capacity for all.” Dr. Andrew explained further, “Children just love the idea of a doctor on television as they’re so familiar with screens and technology today. The family, if they wish, can also bring other members of their community team such as teachers and other service providers. Information on their child can be directly shared with everyone involved, and there are opportunities to ask questions to ensure that the recommendations from the assessment are meeting the needs and goals for their child.” “This Pediatric Specialty Clinic session is a great example of how Telehealth eliminates barriers to patient care by enabling clinicians to deliver health care and expertise with the use of video-conferencing,” said Judy Treppel, provincial manager of Clinical Telehealth Information Technology. “It allows for options for care and support closer to home.” Families are benefiting because of the sharing of resources in a positive way to meet their needs most efficiently. “This is across zones, across teams. This is really adding value to a strong service that already exists in the Camrose community,” said Guiltner.

Residents petition council for public transit system By Dan Jensen

Wildrose Villa residents presented a 1,800 signature petition asking for a public transportation system to committee of the whole City council March 2. “We, the residents of the City of Camrose, are in support of a public transit system for the City of Camrose,” said Wildrose Transportation Group coordinator Betty Marks. “Many of us are seniors on fixed income, college students, single parents, or working parents on a low income. Please consider

the situation you might also be in one day when you are unable to drive and cannot get to medical appointments, shopping, or visiting.” Marks said the residents of Wildrose Villa were under the understanding that Camrose is a progressive place for seniors. “We moved into town only to find that we cannot get around. We need public transportation. We know of the Rose City Handivan, but they are too busy for us. One of our residents, Beatrice

Woroschuk, said that she tried to book them following her back surgery. They were booked up for a month and would not help.” Wildrose Villa resident Linda Broz asked the committee to take a lesson from Ghandi and walk in someone else’s shoes before casting a no vote on public transit. “Cut off your legs and see how you can get around because that is what you are doing to us,” said Broz. “The biggest mistake I ever made was to retire here. to a concert at the Bailey because (transportation) costs $10 to $16 on top of the price of a ticket. I wanted to visit my daughter in Calgary, but I couldn’t do it because there is no transit.” Wildrose Villa residents who were interviewed by Canada World Youth participants Theodore Soukotta and Aaron Ginn for an Association for Life-Wide Living (ALL) of Alberta sponsored study on public transportation (seven in total) indicated that owning a vehicle

is not always an option because of the expense involved, their health status and the uneasiness about driving habits of others, and that a public transportation system would not only increase independence but contribute to economic development by attracting more people to the city. The residents also expressed that the Rose City Handivan and taxis have drawbacks because of restrictions, cost and waiting times, and suggested that a public transportation Continued on page 22

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Light play Seeing a trailer of the movie Mr. Turner flashed me back to one of the most powerful gallery experiences I’ve had. I knew right away which painting it was. It lit up a wall of the National Gallery in London. I’d heard about the painting from a man who, as a not-enjoying-school Grade Nine student, had an art teacher, Mr. Bjorgum, who opened his eyes to visual arts. One of the unforgettable paintings Mr. Bjorgum introduced was The Fighting Temeraire, painted in 1838 by British artist J. M. W. Turner. Even as a 14-year-old, Mr. Bjorgum’s student was affected by seeing a print of the painting. He couldn’t get it out of his mind. Eventually, that painting and others led him to art school and many other adventures. To see the original of the painting that had such a profound impact on a teenaged boy felt almost like a sacred experience. There are lots of things to say about The Fighting Temeraire – the subject matter, the symbolism, the story it tells – but what most affected me was the way Turner painted the light. It took my breath away. I could not take my eyes off the shimmering luminous colours, the way the painting seemed to glow. If you came back in the middle of the night, that painting would light up the room. The theme of “light” bounced around in my mind for days after I saw the painting. Snippets of phrases came and went: “Light-hearted;” “Like a bolt of lightning;” “Lighten up;” “Bring light into dark corners;” “You light up my life.” Light images danced behind my eyes: sheet lightning lighting up the night; dust particles sparkling in a beam of light; sunrises and sunsets that fill the air with colour; children making shadow figures in a beam of light; silveredged clouds with shafts of light shining through… I remembered the infinite uses of the energy of light: laser light used for everything from industrial cutting to surgery; “light techies” who change the images and mood of stage productions; healers who use different colours of light to shift different kinds of energy… I tapped into a practice I’d been playing with for a while in my imagination. When I feel myself slipping into cynicism or black despair about events in the world, sometimes, when I remember, I imagine sending light into the situation. Sometimes when a situation in my own life is troubling me, I imagine light flowing into the situation. I cannot say that anything changes in situations because I imagine light in dark places. In some cases in my own life, I’ve seen improvement, but it’s possible I just see what I want to see. What I can say with authority is this: when I imagine light flowing into dark places, my heart lifts and I feel better. When I feel better, events in my life go better, and I’m sure I’m a more pleasant presence for the people around me. It can’t do harm, and, at a minimum, makes me feel better. That seems like a good enough reason to keep playing around with light in my imagination. Mr. Turner was in his sixties when he painted The Fighting Temeraire. He probably never imagined that 150 years into the future, his painting would inspire a teenage boy who didn’t like school, or that 175 years into the future would expand the imagination of a past-hersixties woman. He probably never imagined that 175 years later, light technology would be used to show a movie about his life. You just never know where light will take you! Camrose police issue scam warning By Dan Jensen

A Camrose business has been forced to cancel its credit card after falling victim to an advertising scam. The business contacted police on Feb. 20 about a company called J White Publications that had failed to deliver on a promise to provide $800 in advertising and charged its credit card account to $2,400. “The Camrose Police Service and the bank of the business are investigating this fraud but, as with most of these scams, criminal charges and the recovery of lost money can be difficult,” said CPS Crime Prevention

Officer Const. Matthew Wilton. Camrose Police Service urges caution when dealing with any unknown company promising advertising, phone number directory listings or any other marketing services, or even recognized businesses, since some scams involve the improper use of wellknown business names, as has been seen locally with the Yellow Pages scam. “To best protect yourselves and your business, always do your own due diligence before providing sensitive information such as a credit card number,” said Const. Wilton. “Only

use known trusted phone numbers when purchasing services and conduct your own internet research on a company using resources such as the Better Business Bureau.” Camrose Police Service can provide information about the possible legitimacy of a business. “If you are suspicious of a received bill or service request we have access to the records of past reported police occurrences from across most of Canada,” said Const. Wilton. More information may be obtained by calling the Camrose Police Service at 780-672-4444.

Standing up to terrorism at home Kevin Sorenson, Crowfoot MP

At home in Alberta, we have all been concerned about the recent release of a propaganda video from the terrorist organization Al-Shabaa calling for jihadist attacks to be targeted at a series of shopping centers in the West, including West Edmonton mall. Shortly after the threats were released, the Edmonton Police Service and RCMP responded stating that while there is no imminent threat, police are taking the issue seriously. According to media reports following the threats, while visitors to the mall noticed an increase in security presence, there has been no detectable drop in the number of shoppers. As your Member of Parliament, I am proud that our fellow Albertans north of us are not intimidated. Under the leadership of our Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our government has been steadfast insisting that the Government of Canada, our military and security forces, and Canadians themselves will not be intimidated by threats from any terrorist organization. Canada’s national security agencies will not hesitate to take all appropriate actions to counter any ter-

rorist threat to Canada, our citizens and our interests around the world. It is however important that we remain vigilant. The international jihadist movement has declared war on us. We are being targeted simply because these terrorists hate our society and the values we represent and hold dear. That is why we have put forward legislative proposals for Parliament to debate that will work to protect Canadians from jihadi terrorists. Canadians want to maintain a good balance between the rights and freedoms that define our society and the need to protect ourselves from the harm being threatened by jihadists. That is also why Canada is not sitting on the sidelines – as some would have us do – and we are joining our Allies in supporting the international coalition in the fight against ISIL. At the end of March, Parliament will be asked to consider further efforts that may extend and expand the current mission against ISIL– and whether Canada should extend our mission to Syria and Libya. We will need to assess what our nation can contribute and how we can best be of assistance to the

efforts of our allies who are continuing the flight. Previous generations of Canadians have grappled with these issues. In the First World War the world learned about Canada’s willingness to help from the great heroics and sacrifice of our nation. In the ensuing global conflicts (Second World War, Korea, and most recently Afghanistan) the world learned that Canada is serious about protecting our way of life. While we live in a peaceful and strong democratic nation that we built together under the rule of law, we must defend our freedoms - freedoms such as the right to privacy, lawful advocacy, protest, dissent and artistic expression, as we have always done historically. With that said, let’s go to the mall! Johnson performs All Neil All Night at the Bailey By Murray Green Kit Johnson is one of those talented singer-songwriters that you know very well, you just don’t realize it at the moment. He is headlining the All Neil All Night, a Neil Young tribute at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, March 13 at 8 p.m. Johnson co-wrote the Alannah Myles smash hit “Lover of Mine” and has appeared on recordings and on stage with David Wilcox, Murray McLauchlan, Wild Strawberries, Amos Garrett, Tom Cochrane and Big Sugar. He has played in bands featuring Corb Lund, George Fox and Sylvia Tyson as well. Johnson isn’t a stranger to performing tributes either. Before he took on the All Neil All Night, Neil Young tribute he was the musical director and performer in Hank WilliamsThe Show He Never Gave. Johnson has since been working in Calgary’s recording and live music scenes, as well as continuing to tour and play with some of Canada’s top musicians. He has played extensively with some of the country’s finest roots, country and rock acts and has backed up many international artists on stage and in the studio over the last 20 years. He continues to tour with McLauchlan and Wilcox, as well as playing and recording with many different Alberta artists. His solid ‘no-nonsense’ bass playing is his forte, though he is also an award winning songwriter, a record producer and a guitar player. Johnson provides lead vocals, guitars and harmonica for his Young tribute. He is backed by Tim (Dutch) Leacock on drums, guitars, pedal steel and harmony vocals; (Sweet Daddy) Steve Pineo on guitars, mandolin, bass and harmony vocals; and Ross (The Boss) Watson on bass, drums and harmony vocals. Forestburg show Johnson will return to the area for a March 28 concert in Forestburg. He will be reunited with David Wilcox for shows in Calgary on April 2 and 4.

THREE DAYS OF PARTYING!

The Josephburg Men’s Chorus and Belles of Harmony Handbells will be making a return to Camrose for a concert of sacred and secular music, Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. in the Camrose United Church. During their last performance here, these groups sang and played to a very appreciative full-house. The Josephburg Choral Society is a community choir from the Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park area made up of three groups. About Time Productions celebrates 10th year with production of Wizard of Oz By Laurel Nadon

With opening night quickly approaching, the

stage is almost complete and costume designers are working overtime to prepare for About Time Production’s presentation of the musical Wizard of Oz. The group’s first musical 10 years ago was also the Wizard of Oz, and to mark the anniversary, the musical will be back although the MGM version has been chosen this time. “We thought to celebrate our 10th year that we would go big,” said Cathie Johnson, artistic director and founder of About Time Productions. She noted that there are subtle differences between the two versions, including silver slippers in the original versus ruby slippers and flying monkeys in the MGM version. She said that audience members can expect their biggest show yet. The musical runs from Thursday, March 12 to Sunday, March 15 with a school show, matinees and evening performances. The shows will be presented at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The 36 actors, ranging in age from eight to 18, have been rehearsing for three hours on Sunday afternoons as well as rehearsing with music director Tova Olson on Wednesday nights. “I have very high expec-

tations with students. I feel you get what you expect,” Johnson said. “They have met and in some cases exceeded my expectations. These kids have worked really hard.” Two actors who were also in the Wizard of Oz production 10 years ago will be back for this year’s musical. including a crow and tornado, while Haugen has the role of the Wicked Witch. Haugen, now 18, said that while this is her sixth musical, her favourite role is still the munchkin. “It was the experience of it. It was just such a wonder to have bigger people as role models that I got to work alongside,” Haugen said. “I was in such awe of theatre and I felt so little and shy, but I loved it at the same time and obviously that’s why I’ve been coming for 10 years.” She noted that it’s been wonderful being involved in the production, and she has especially enjoyed being on set with the original Wicked Witch from 10 years ago, Paige Fairall, who is now the assistant director. Haugen said that it’s the group of people at About Time Productions who have kept her coming back. Besides her roles in musicals, she has also taken classes in tap, jazz, ballet, improv, directing, movement for acting as well as volunteered in classes with younger children. “You grow up in it and you’re connected to the people there and you’re sharing something that you love,” Haugen said. She said that taking part in a musical requires teamwork, a large time commitment and personal responsibility. “You have to love it and feel a responsibility to the group that you’re not going to let your part down,” Haugen said, adding that people might be surprised by the amount of preparation time and backstage

work involved in putting on a musical. Johnson noted that production designer and choreographer Beyata Hackborn, a Grade 12 student who plans to enter production design post-secondary school next year, came up with spectacular drawings and interpreted the look and feel of the musical in a new way. “She’s come up with quite a brilliant design,” Johnson said. “It’s still the same story, but you’re not going to think of Judy Garland (who played Dorothy in the original film).” She added that Camrose has lucked out with fine technical talent at the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, and that the stage and costumes had to be bigger to fit into the new space. “It’s opening up a lot of creative opportunities,” Johnson said. Ten years ago, there were 23 youth involved in About Time Productions and one musical a year; now there are 170 students and five or six shows a year. The group now includes classes for drama, improv, movement and dance. A clowning class will be offered next year. “Every year I’m surprised and overjoyed that kids want to do this and experience what it’s like to be on stage,” Johnson said. “The support from the community and parents has been incredible.” For tickets to the musical, visit camroselive.ca or the box office at the University of Alberta, Augustana campus.

Residents present petition for public transit system Continued from page 13

system should be flexible, with stops in front of or within one block of senior centres, accessible to everyone, and be people flexible, with schedules that enable users to get to where they need to go at the times they need to be there. They further noted that the City could combine bus fares with community events and use school buses when the buses are not used for transporting students. ALL vice-president Ted Wigglesworth told committee that in order to move people not only within Camrose, but within surrounding areas, the City needs to work with other communities. “Unless they start working together rural communities don’t have the volumes to make it (public transit) work,” he said, adding that the Alberta Community Partnership provides funding for transit projects only if communities demonstrate they are willing to cooperate with each other. Wigglesworth said ALL has gained some insights about what it takes to run a public transit system from its experience with the Battle River Bus and is willing to work with the City of Camrose to find solutions to ways a system could be implemented here. “We have to find a way to enable people to utilize the facilities that are here in the city so that people can be healthy and well. We know people are healthier when they can get out of their homes. The more we can work together the better off we will be in finding solutions for everyone.” City councillor Max Lindstrand said the City of Camrose has to address the needs of both the mobile in the community who wish for a bus transportation and the immobile who would benefit from an escalation in service provided by the Handivan. “People think we need to find one solution but we need to find two solutions.” Lindstrand is confident that the City will be making progress on the issue of public transit in the coming year. “We have allocated money in the budget,” he said. “Within the year we are going to see some attempts to solve the problems that have been identified.” Councillor Bill Sears assured the Wildrose Villa residents that the information they have provided will be added to the other discussions taking place on the subject of transit. “There are lots of discussions taking place which is good,” said Sears. “The chair of the public transit committee is working hard to come up with solutions.”

2015 Ford Focus New design and advanced technologies

Craig Beddoes By Dan Jensen

The 2015 Focus at Lamb Ford Sales delivers a new exterior design, completely revised interior and advanced new technologies for improved customer comfort and safety. “The combination of compelling, modern design and the most high-tech interior in the class will appeal to contemporary customers who desire a small car with very sophisticated features,” said Lamb Ford sales manager Brett Read. “What makes Focus so attractive to consumers today – being great to drive, delivering exceptional fuel economy and value, and offering leading-edge in-car technologies – is amplified with the new Focus.” Exterior Available in four- and five-door versions, Focus features a restyled hood and grille, available signature lighting for the headlamps and taillamps, new rear lamp clusters and a restyled trunk lid. The Focus ST includes 18-inch Rado Grey aluminum wheels and 18-inch machined aluminum with

black-painted pockets as an option. Inside Inside, colours and materials have a clean, modern look, with satin chrome detailing, new seat trims, switches and an available heated steering wheel. Storage is improved with a new centre console incorporating adjustable cupholders, and a new, easier-to-access glove box. Technology Focus is as ready to make things happen as you are. Features including the SYNC® 6 communications system that helps keep you connected and the rearview camera that helps you see what’s behind your vehicle were designed to do more than complement your drive – they make it more convenient. The rearview camera appears on either a 4.2 inch screen or an eight inch screen that comes with MyFord Touch equipped cars. The available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) uses rear radar sensors to help warn you when a vehicle is detected in your blind spot. And cross-traffic alert can help warn you of vehicles approaching from either

side when you’re slowly backing out of a parking space. Should a Focus driver start to drift out of the current lane without a turn signal on, the system provides a warning through a series of steering wheel vibrations that mimic a rumble strip. If the unintended lane departure is not corrected by the driver, the aid function of the system actively applies steering torque to help the driver direct the car back toward the centre of the current lane. Smart There’s smart. And then there’s smart done with purpose. The Focus was designed to keep you comfortable and in control down every road you travel. The available SecuriCode™ keyless entry keypad lets you conveniently unlock your vehicle without a key or push-button remote. Grabbing a cold steering wheel is a thing of the past with the new available heated steering wheel making those uncomfortably chilly days a little more comfortable. MyKey® encourages responsible driving by others when they’re behind the wheel of your Focus,

by letting you limit top speeds, decrease audio volume and more. Performance While Focus is always powered by driving dynamics, the big story this year is the innovative technology under the hood. The SE EcoBoost® package centres on the available 1.0L EcoBoost® I-3 engine—an engine that’s small, but packs enough punch to handle almost any driving situation powerfully and efficiently. Twice already, automotive journalists have named the EcoBoost® powerplant International Engine of the Year for 2012 and 2013. In Europe, where it is already on five nameplates, it accounts for 32 per cent of sales of the current generation Focus and 26 per cent of Fiesta sales. “The 1.0 litre EcoBoost® engine is proof that excellent fuel economy and performance can come in one package,” said Read. “Focuus is already known for bringing together efficiency and fun, and the latest addition will bring consumers a whole new level of enjoyment.” The standard 2.0L TiVCT I-4 engine is flex-

fuel capable, so you can use either unleaded, E85 or any combination of the two. The Focus Electric runs exclusively on electricity – keeping you on the road and away from the pump. The Focus Electric is powered completely by a rechargeable stateof-the-art lithium-ion battery. That means it never needs a drop of gas or an oil change, ever. And being 100 per cent electric also means zero CO2 emissions-talk about improving your carbon footprint. The unique sport suspension offers excellent handling without sacrificing power. Suspension and shock absorber upgrades include a new shock absorber valve design providing improved interior quietness, a new electronic stability program system with less intrusion and improved comfort, and a change to the rear suspension to give drivers a more connected feel to the road. You can see the 2015 Ford Focus at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

City redistricting proposal Continued from page 11

“I am not in favour of a building with six or seven stories when others around it are three of four,” she said. Leckie said Building and Development Services would change its recommendation to proceed with the redistricting if the property was more than seven stories in height. “If it creates shadows on properties and does not respect the character of the neighbourhood we would have to change our stance.” Fieldstone Development’s Don Forestier assured council that the project he is proposing to develop won’t be any more than four stories. “I would like to build a high rise in Camrose but this won’t be the one,” he said. The project has an urgency with the proposed changes to the land use bylaw. “It is advantageous to the developer in this specific circumstance to have the proposed development considered under the existing land use bylaw,” said Leckie. “The existing bylaw does not set a maximum density in the R4 district. The proposed R4 district in the proposed land use bylaw carries a maximum density of 125 dwelling units per net residential hectare if parking is provided below grade. Therefore the maximum density for the combined sites would be 18 units. There are also more detailed design guidelines to limit the impact of high density development on adjacent low density dwellings.” As the project could conceivably have a significant impact on adjacent property owners, traffic volumes and the urban character of the neighbourhood, City administration is requesting that the developer, before second and third readings, host an open house to gauge the greater community sentiment. Administration is expecting that detailed design schematics will be available for public comment.

The Camrose Police Service’s commitment to suppress and reduce the illicit drug trade continued with a significant seizure of drugs and a pair of arrests. The investigation, conducted by members of the Camrose Police Service Major Crimes Unit, led to a vehicle stop and the arrests of the male and female on the evening of Feb. 27. Searches were subsequently conducted of the vehicle and a residence in the area of 57 Street and 51 Avenue. A total of 150 grams of cocaine was seized along with 63 grams of methamphetamine. Police also seized cellular phones, a scale, cash and other items related to drug trafficking. A 29-year-old Camrose woman and a 25-year-old Drayton Valley man were charged with two counts of Trafficking a Controlled Substance and two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. The woman was further charged with Possession of Proceeds of Crime and Possession of a Controlled Substance. They were scheduled to make their first appearance in the Camrose Provincial Court on March 4. The total amount of drugs seized in this investigation represents 700 potential sales at the street level with a potential street value of over $28,000. Camrose Police Service has laid nine charges for drug trafficking offences thus far in 2015.

Volleyball Vikings earn trip to Charlottetown for nationals By Murray Green

The Augustana Vikings men’s volleyball team earned a trip to nationals in Charlottetown, PEI by knocking off the former Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference champion Red Deer Kings in the final match at provincials. Augustana defeated SAIT in three games, Medicine Hat in four games and the Kings in an exciting five game series in front of Camrose fans on Feb. 28. “It has been an amazing year with this group of guys. The stars have been aligned in a sense. Everything really clicked well for us. We remained focused and the players bought into what was being sold to them,” said coach Stephen Leg-

gitt. “They have seen the payoff of it and that is amazing. A score of 15-13 in the fifth game, that is two points. The whole match could have gone either way.” The players thought of the finals as just another match. Cole McCartney was smiling like he already knew the outcome. “We were down 6-1 in the final game and we didn’t panic. There was no time out in the fifth game. They were relaxed and didn’t feel the pressure,” said coach Leggitt, who was still playing the game in his mind. “As long as Red Deer and Augustana don’t match up early at nationals, we could see a rematch in the finals again. We were ranked seventh during

the last CCAA rankings, but a lot has changed since then. Red Deer was number two and Douglas was number one. Douglas (New Westminster) lost and Duram (Oshawa) was 18-0 heading into the Ontario playoffs and they lost,” said Leggitt. “It shows that any team can go into nationals now and win it.” Heading into the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association nationals the Vikings are ranked second in the country, while Red Deer is fourth. The Camosun Chargers are first, Niagara Knights are third, St. Clair Saints are fifth, St. Thomas Tommies are sixth, Titans de Limoilou are seventh and the host Holland Hurricanes

are eighth. The Vikings play Limoilou in the opening match of nationals (1 p.m. AST) on March 12. Strong opposition from NAIT all year (bronze medal winners) helped the Vikings prepare for the southern teams “After the holidays we came back ready for the second half of the season,” said Leggitt. “We worked on gaining bench strength, we worked on picking apart opponents more and on the down side I overloaded them with too much information. After some losses, we sat down and righted the ship and relaxed. I over coached. The coaches before me, Greg Ryan and Tom Tigchelaar did an

amazing job, and it was time to turn them lose. Tom has to take credit for this because he brought some of these guys in when the program started.” Once Augustana reached the gold medal game they relaxed, knowing they could beat the former champions. “We talked about winning last September so everything has been falling into place and it helps when you don’t receive surprises. We were preparing to meet Medicine Hat and Red Deer all year. By the time we get to nationals we will have gone through every scenario that could possibly happen, right down to if our plane is late.” Continued on page 30

Regardless of the temperature outside, you should avoid vehicle idling. The best way to warm up your engine in the cold is to gently start driving. If you are driving a vehicle that is newer than 1980, then idling should be a thing of the past. Vintage cars did need a bit of time to warm up because the carburetor couldn’t always get the right mix of air and fuel into the engine when it was cold. But carburetors were replaced by fuel injectors starting in the 80s, so unless you drive a car that is more than 30 years old, it’s time to change your bad habit. Modern fuel-injection technology relies on sensors to supply fuel to the engine and these sensors adjust to temperature, so you should only need a maximum of 30 seconds of idling before driving away. Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine, and it gets you zero kilometers per litre. Idling to warm up your car simply wastes fuel and increases emissions, which is bad for both the environment and your wallet. If you follow your owner’s manual and use the correct type of oil for your vehicle and climate, there’s no need to worry about cold oil. Modern synthetic motor oil can flow at temperatures as low as -40 degrees celsius, so your car should get the oil it needs as soon as you start your car. When your engine is cold, the fuel injectors supply it with more fuel. Idling your engine, therefore, forces it to operate in a very inefficient, fuel-rich mode that can cause excessive engine wear and damage components, including the cylinders, spark plugs and exhaust system. A cold engine produces more unburned hydrocarbons. Idling your engine to warm it up releases harmful emissions that have been linked to cancer, diabetes, cognitive degeneration, and heart and lung disease. This is especially dangerous if you idle in your garage. Even with the garage door open you are putting yourself and your family at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Idling your car is completely unnecessary even in the cold. In extreme temperatures, using a block heater or plugging in your vehicle are far better alternatives. Stop idling and make the right choice for your car, wallet, health and environment.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Kodiaks end season with wins By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks earned a two week break from the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs by finishing first in the southern division. It is a welcome break for the hard working players. “It’s nice to have a break and get the troops healthy for the playoffs. This season has been incredible and I’m glad to be part of a this team,” said Danton Davis from Camrose. “We are excited for the playoffs and eager to see what we can do.” Davis was a Kodiaks fan since he was little. “It’s nice going around town and having people wish the boys success. It’s a little more pressure, but it is good sometimes. It was a good decision to play here. Sometimes coach Boris (Rybalka) is hard on us, but he does it the right way and gets you ready for life. It’s a decision I don’t regret,” said Davis, who played midget hockey in Camrose last season and had a choice of going to the Western Hockey League or the Kodiaks. “We have been preparing for the playoffs all year, so we are ready for it. Regular season doesn’t mean anything if you can’t do it in

the playoffs,” added Davis. “It’s going to be a long haul stretch, but coach Boris has us prepared already. He has us paying attention to details right now. He wants us to be consistent because a single game can sway a series in a different direction. He wants us to focus on every game.” Rest will do some players a lot of good. “It’s important to get everyone healed and well rested while the other teams battle it out. Hopefully, the teams go five games and beat each other up and we will come in ready. Our game is fast skating and heavy hitting, so it takes a toll on other teams. If we get them worn down, it will be a huge advantage for us,” said Davis. As a rookie Davis has enjoyed a successful year. “I’ve had my ups and downs but I’m ready for the playoffs now. It has been a big learning curve coming from midgets where we had two practices a week and a game to practicing every day, playing more and going to school,” he explained. “I’m happy where we are at and excited about playoffs. They are at a whole different level.

I want to play in the grudge matches against Brooks and Spruce Grove. We play our best hockey against the best teams. It is a different intensity and a different atmosphere. You tend to hate them a little more then everyone else.” Camrose doused the fire brought by the Drumheller Dragons in the last game of their Alberta Junior Hockey League season on Feb. 28. After Drumheller scored first, the Kodiaks fought back with four straight goals and eventually won 5-2 at the EnCana Arena. Dallas Bergstrom, Cole McBride and Adam Wheeldon collected tallies in the opening period for a 3-1 lead. Spencer Kryczka increased the advantage before the Dragons came back with another marker. In the third frame, rookie Parker Kelly added an insurance goal. Goalie Devin McDonald stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced, while his teammates directed 43 shots at the Dragons’ cage in front of 1,912 fans.
