City and County receive more MSI funding By Dan Jensen
The City of Camrose, Camrose County and other area municipalities will be receiving a share of the $400 million in additional Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding announced by the provincial government March 5. The City of Camrose will receive $1,516,714, while Camrose County will receive $1,067,509. The Town of Bashaw will receive $62,822, the Town of Daysland $56,482, the Town of Killam $73,025, the Town of Viking $75,893, the Village of Bawlf $27,769, the Village of Bittern Lake $17,217, the Village of Donalda $16,434, the Village of Edberg $10,590, the Village of Ferintosh $12,709, the Village of Forestburg $61,384, the Village of Hay
Lakes $31,077, the Village of Lougheed $18,386, the Village of Rosalind $13,033, and the Village of Strome $16,149. “This funding should help our partners meet their capital infrastructure commitments and position them well for the tough budget cycles ahead,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Diana McQueen. Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer was grateful for the additional assistance. “We weren’t expecting anything extra,” said Mayer. “We were just hoping that we weren’t going to get cut. Whatever we get is going to be a bonus.” Premier Jim Prentice said the government is committed to supporting infrastructure that promotes economic development, supports the province’s econ-
omy and keeps Albertans working. “We are providing $400 million from this year’s budget to ensure municipalities have the capacity to meet their current infrastructure project commitments.” The City of Camrose share of the MSI funding in the 2014-15 provincial budget before the increase was $4,596,503, of which $3,270,445 was designated for capital projects, $1,187,239 for basic municipal transportation, and $138,819 for operational. The Camrose County share was $3,411,970, of which 2,488,972 was designated for capital projects, $699,914 for basic municipal transportation, and $223,084 for operational. Municipalities are still waiting to see whether the provincial government
will be reducing MSI funding in the 2015-16 budget, which will be announced on March 26. MSI program
All municipalities in Alberta are eligible for funding under the MSI program based on terms set out in their long term funding agreement. Municipalities determine projects and activities to be funded based on local priorities within the general criteria set out in the program guidelines and are encouraged to take a long-term approach to planning for capital projects. Eligible capital projects include municipal roads, bridges, public transit vehicles/facilities, emergency services facilities/equipment, water and wastewater systems, solid waste management facilities and equipment, regional and
community airport facilities/equipment, and other municipal buildings such as recreation and sports facilities, public works buildings, and cultural and community centres. Funding is based on municipal populations, educational property tax requisitions and kilometres of local roads, and includes base funding for all municipalities and sustainable investment funding for municipalities with limited local assessment bases. MSI projects
The provision of third quarter funding brings this year’s MSI funding in the province to $1.6 billion. Since the MSI program was first introduced in 2007, the government has allocated over $6 billion in funding to 4,800 projects.
County asks library to provide more information By Murray Green
The Camrose Public Library asked Camrose County to provide 41.3 per cent more funding this year even though it showed a surplus of $130,655 and just a 2.31 per cent increase in the budget. During 2015 budget deliberations and in the 2015 interim budget funding for the Camrose Public Library, the County maintained the amount of $100,542 would go to the library to support the rural users. On Feb. 5, Reeve Don Gregorwich and administrator Paul King met with representatives of the library to discuss the budget. Reeve Gregorwich requested that the library provide detailed statements as to programing and actual numbers rather than just budget numbers. “Camrose Public Library requested a 41.3 per cent increase in County funding on a budget that showed only a 2.31 per cent increase in overall expenditures. My math is not great, but that doesn’t seem to add up,” said councillor Doug Lyseng. Library board members Al Corbett, Elizabeth Luck, Sandra McLay and library manager Deb Cryderman attended the March 10 council meeting to address the library funding shortfall. “The division of town versus county was not accurately reflecting the use of the library, “ said Cryderman. Instead of increasing every year, the library board decided to make up the difference in one year. “We covered the amount each year with our surplus money. This year we don’t have that surplus to back us up,” added Corbett. “We have to find those funds somewhere.” Councillor Brian Willoughby wanted to know
where the numbers came from. “We want to know how many county residents use the library and the last figure we have is 1,100,” said Willoughby. The figures used were based on how many items were taken out, rather than how many people used the service. “In 2012, the City decided to cover the costs of issuing library cards. So, since then, we have based the numbers on the items that are borrowed to better reflect the usage,” explained Cryderman. “We don’t have a list (of county users) just the amount of items borrowed by county members.” Councillor Willoughby asked again for a total of county users because he thought the information would be provided at the meeting. “I would actually have to look that up,” said Cryderman. “It would be in
our database. That number could change on any given day due to expiration dates.” Councillor Ken Krause still searched for a better answer. “You should still be able to tell us if 200 or 1,000 people are card holders. I want to know what our cost is per person to use the library,” said councillor Krause. “If we have 400 users and we gave you $100,000, we should be able to figure out the cost per person.” The library board agreed to provide those numbers at a later time. “I was disappointed and surprised to hear on the radio that it was 100 per cent the county’s fault (lack of funds). I don’t know if it was necessary to go to that length. We can go around the table and ask each councillor, but I haven’t had one phone call in favour of us giving the library more money,” said councillor Krause. Other councillors point-
ed out that they didn’t have any phone calls in support of more funding for the library and, in fact, several calls indicated the county should be giving less in the future. “We have had comments from various county residents saying they have received good service and even at the increased rate at $25 (card membership) they are receiving a good service,” Corbett responded. “We are not having a lot of negative feedback ourselves. We tried to spread our shortfall across everything and not focus on the county. We also closed a number of days, reduced the book collection and a number of other things that impact all of us.” Councillor Greg Gillespie asked a few questions about employees. “We have 26 employees and 11 are full time,” said Cryderman. “Don’t you think asking for a 41.3 per cent increase
is a little high?” asked Gillespie. “We send in our budget to the City and County and then later adjust it with final numbers,” said Cryderman. “We told everybody in the fall that we were not increasing the amounts given because we don’t have the extra money and yet three or four organizations still asked for more money. They didn’t get it. It is getting tougher and harder for us to come up with the money and asking for a 41.3 per cent increase is pretty hard to take. We should have been told about this, instead of it coming as a surprise,” added Gillespie. “We understand that. We come up with a budget that is the best for all patrons based on usage from the city and county. We could justify those numbers. It is a significant increase and it was a request, not a demand,” explained Corbett. Continued on page 5

County asks for more information Continued from page 4
Councillor Gillespie pointed out that county residents had their fees for cards doubled ($25 instead of $12), but the city user rates were free. He asked if the City had to pay higher rates as well. “The city portion should have doubled as well,” he said. “No, we always budgeted that same amount for the City. We went with the number of memberships that we had in 2011,” continued Cryderman. “Maybe that is something we have to bring up in next year’s budget process. It is a good point,” said Corbett. “I had six or seven calls after a story appeared in the paper and without exception, they all supported our position,” said councilor Lyseng. “They also commented on the tactic taken by the library to put the information out there. It made the
County look less than desirable and the library didn’t receive much sympathy in my area. My second point is that we will never fund the library based on the number of items taken out. That is just not a realistic figure.” Councillor Jack Lyle said the 1,100 card holder number seemed high. “You say that you came to us as a request and not a demand, but I guess we were very appalled at the article in the paper and what was said on the radio. When you come to us without the proper information and then put out information blaming the County without coming back to us, it is the wrong way to do business. I was very disappointed in the way you presented that without giving us the information. I didn’t get any calls saying support the library. The calls were about decreasing the requisition.”
The library board said they would take that as information. Administrator King pointed out that the library numbers show a revenue of $917,224 with contributed assets of $131,964 and an expense amount of $786,569, leaving a surplus of $130,655. “My question to you is if that is your revenue and expenditures, where is the $130,000,” King asked. “My other question is that in 2015 you budgeted a 13.28 per cent increase in salaries. I don’t know very many people who are getting a 13.28 per cent increase in salaries.” Cryderman indicated that part of the $18,000 amount was to go towards a new staff member. “I believe two per cent was for cost of living increase allowance and the rest was for a new staff member,” she said. by Bonnie Hutchinson Happy Equal Light Okay, so it’s belated. But it’s not too late to celebrate. Over the weekend, friends invited me to an “Equal Light Day” party. In case you, like me, didn’t know – Equal Light Day is one of two days in the year when day and night are both exactly 12 hours. You probably know it as the equinox. Here in the northern hemisphere, Equal Light Day marks the official beginning of spring. Of course, here on the prairies, astronomy may say the equinox marks the beginning of spring but the weather doesn’t always take the hint. For my buddies in Australia and the rest of the southern hemisphere, this equinox marks the beginning of autumn. Back to the party. I thought it was a clever idea of my friends. I know they’re interested in astronomy. They send e-mails and text messages about eclipses and times when certain stars or planets are visible. Made sense that they’d have an “Equal Light Day” party. More than an excuse for a party
I thought my friends just made up “Equal Light Day” for an excuse to have a party. Turns out that in some circles this is a very big deal. For thousands of years, people have celebrated the spring equinox with rituals and traditions. Many early peoples celebrated because their food supplies would soon be restored. In Christianity, Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Early Egyptians built the Great Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising sun on the day of the spring equinox. The first day of spring also marks the beginning of Nowruz, the Persian New Year (which I’d never heard of until the weekend). The celebration lasts 13 days (almost two weeks!). Its roots are in the 3,000-year-old tradition of Zorastrianism (which I’d also never heard of). In 2009, the United Nations officially registered Nowruz on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly recognized the International Day of Nowruz. Who knew?

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Theatre shuttle bus
Driving to Camrose from Calgary on Saturday morning to see the The Wizard of Oz, I wondered why a connecting bus link hasn’t been established to convey theatre travellers from the major Greyhound points to one of the best theatre cities in the province – Camrose!
I drove this time but would love to take in more of the theatre events around the province and especially in Camrose now that the Bailey Theatre has been beautifully renovated and the new Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre has opened. I would love to let the knowledgeable and capable bus driver handle the winter roads so that I could just look forward to the enjoyment of phenomenal talent of our Alberta youth and adult performance groups and individuals. Is a bus link possible? Can groups of seniors look forward to sharing the excitement of live theatre in Camrose? Well done to all the Camrose citizens who have worked diligently to foster inclusive theatre excellence for interested Camrose performing art enthusiasts! Kathy Newman, Calgary
Market surprise
Imag ine our surprise when our vendors and customers read the article “Society proposes farmers’ market use for the old f ire hall.” For the record, any rumours that the Camrose and District Farmers’ Market held on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. is moving downtown to the old fire hall are at best premature, if not outright erroneous. While it is an interesting notion, there have been no official discussions or presentations made to either the board or our membership, who will have the final say in any such an important decision. John Girvan, president, Camrose and District Farmers’ Market Association
BRCF presents grant to Legion to assist with cenotaph move
And the point is…
So why is this relevant on a Tuesday in March for people in East Central Alberta? Well, of course, the equinox signals that we’ve made it through another winter. Sure, there might be another winter storm or two but we know that the back of winter has been broken. That’s worth celebrating. But this did get me thinking about light and dark and the meaning of life. (When you’re over 70, you have the luxury of letting your thoughts meander into stuff like that.) Light has a good reputation. Light goes with lightheartedness. In stories of good and evil, light gets to be the good guy. Dark has a bad reputation. Dark motives are suspect. Dark subjects are depressing. I personally would rather turn away from darkness. But on this planet, we have light and dark in equal measure. Twice a year we have equal light and dark within 24 hours. Over the course of a year, we also have light and dark in equal measure. There might be something to be said for learning to appreciate both. Still percolating
Okay, this is a long way from “my friends had an Equal Light Day party.” Great food, great conversations, lots of laughter, great music, and fun to celebrate the lengthening days which I so appreciate about Alberta. But I’m still percolating about “light and dark in equal measures.” Next week I’ll tell you more about learning to walk in the dark... If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com.
Battle River Community Foundation director David Ofrim presented a cheque to Ragnar Gislason, chair of the Camrose Legion cenotaph communications committee. Shown in the photograph are Norm Mayer, mayor of the City of Camrose, Jeremy Enarson, director of engineering, David Ofrim, Battle River Community Foundation director, Ragnar Gislason, Camrose Legion cenotaph communications committee, Chris Clarkson, parks director, City of Camrose, and Bob Burt, president of Camrose Branch No. 57, Royal Canadian Legion.
The Battle River Community Foundation has granted $15,000 to the City of Camrose to assist in the relocation of the cenotaph to Rudy Swanson Park. The grant is from income from the Paul and Millicent Bethge Fund, established in 2007 to support development and maintenance of parks in the city of Camrose, and the Community Fund. The Battle River Com-
munity Foundation exists to support projects in East Central Alberta which benefit communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is
kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations in accordance with the wishes of the donors. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $2,900,000 to support important facilities and programs such as the development and maintenance of parks in Camrose.

“It still shows a 13.28 per cent increase in salaries. I would love to have that for all of our employees,” said King. “When you cut costs, you have to look at salaries and programming. But, only about two per cent is in programming. You list 1,374 programs, but only list expenditures for 16.” Of the $786,569 in expenses, programming costs totalled $20,869. “We may run seven programs a day, every day, all year. The 1,374 number means we had four programs today, three yesterday and six tomorrow, so it adds up to a total of 1,374,” said Cryderman. Corbett admitted it should say program days, or program sessions. He also said that the library decided to close on some days, so it would be reflected on less salaries being paid out. “ T h i s c ome s bac k t o my or i g i n a l que s t io n . Co-op is launching a new funding program to help protect, beautify and improve the spaces that help communities thrive. Co-op Community Spaces will donate up to $1 million annually to fund projects related to recreation, environmental conservation and urban agriculture across Western Canada. “Spaces define our local communities,” said Vic Huard, executive vice-president of strategy at Federated Co-operatives Limited. “Co-ops continue to make life better by investing in local economies and giving back to communities with programs such as Co-op Community Spaces.” Project funding is available between $25,000 and $100,000 for capital projects in Western Canada by a registered non-profit, registered charity or community service co-operative. Funding is available for projects in three categories: Recreation: enhancing recreation opportunities such as recreation centres and playgrounds; Environmental Conservation: preserving natural spaces such as green spaces, parks and interpretive centres; and Urban Agriculture: supporting small-scale agricultural initiatives in rural and urban spaces such as community gardens and food education facilities. Online applications will be accepted between April 1 and May 15. Co-op will announce the successful community projects this fall. Men’s Shed idea engages support Submitted
For some months now the Camrose Men’s Conference organizers and past conference participants have been exploring ways to provide options that would engage men who, through retirement or other life circumstances, find themselves with time on their hands. A Shed is a dedicated, friendly, and welcoming meeting place where men come together and undertake a variety of mutually agreed upon activities that they decide on their own. Men’s Shed is open to all men regardless of age, background or ability. It is a place where you can share your skills and knowledge with others, learn new skills, develop your old skills, or just be with other men for fun. An objective of Men’s Shed is to enhance or maintain the well-being of the participating men. The Men’s Shed movement started in Australia with the mandate to assist communities in establishing programs designed to give men a space to work on projects together, learn new skills and, most of all, to share their life experiences in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. This self-directed grassroots movement has had tremendous success in Australia and New Zealand and has spread to the UK and Ireland. Last year the University of Manitoba received Movember Mental Health funding for a three-year research project. Community consultations with men, throughout year one of the project, was incorporated into the development of a toolkit for starting Men’s Sheds in Canada and, as part of its further refinement in year two, Camrose has been chosen as one of four Canadian community partners to pilot and implement this toolkit to establish our own. Doug Mackie, founder of Mensheds Manitoba, the only fully functioning Shed in North America thus far, said that “Men have a greater tendency to suffer from isolation, loneliness and depression than women, especially after they retire; however, being productive and contributing to your community are key steps to good health.” To learn more about the project, the concept of Men’s Sheds and help us toward establishing our own Camrose and Area Men’s Shed join us at the Camrose Public Library on April 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. for some coffee and chat. For more information contact Allan Thompson at 780608-0605, Clarence Hastings at 780-672-0141, or Peter LeBlanc at 780-672-1645. All are welcome to attend.
FRANCOPHONE DAY FLAG RAISING
Camrose RCMP Detachment Constable Lou Leroux, Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson and Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer raised the Franco-Albertan flag at Bill Fowler Centre March 20 to celebrate International Francophone Day as well as to mark the end of a month of francophonie celebrations by the Association Canadienne Francaise de l’Alberta (ACFA) in Camrose and across the province. Sorenson, in a ceremony attended by students from Ecole Sifton, Ecole Fondateurs and Charlie Killam School, members of the Cercle local de Camrose-Battle River, and representatives from Augustana, said it is important to celebrate the rich heritage shared by French and English-speaking Canadians and demonstrate appreciation for the francophone culture and French language lovers. Mayor Mayer congratulated the French school system in the community for its efforts to keep bilingualism at the forefront in Alberta and said he can appreciate the heritage that such efforts bring forth. Designed by Jean-Pierre Grenier, the Franco-Albertan flag was adopted by the ACFA in March, 1982.
Council supports establishment of taxi subsidy By Dan Jensen
Camrose City council has given approval in principle to the establishment of a taxi subsidy program on a trial basis within the last six months of 2015. “I have every confidence in the Community Transit Advisory Committee (CTAC) to work out the details with administration in terms of pulling it off,” said councillor Max Lindstrand in discussions on the program at committee of the whole council meeting March 16. “There is money allocated in the budget so there isn’t any reason why we shouldn’t be able to go forward with that.” The program would involve the City providing chits (coupons) that could be redeemed for discounted taxi trips by clients of organizations like Camrose Open Door Association and Camrose and District Support Services, as well as students at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus and seniors’ homes. If the taxi fare is $7 the riders would pay $3 and present to the driver a coupon that would have already been paid for by the City, for the remaining amount.
“We would have to determine how the taxi components would work in detail, working with the taxi companies and probably some financial institution,” said CTAC chair Tony Hladun. “We would also have to determine the allocation to the people who are eligible.” Council is hoping that providing a taxi subsidy for a trial period starting in September will help it to gauge whether or not it will be successful and whether it would be acceptable to Camrosians. “Hopefully we will be able to reach at least some of the people who have expressed some interest and a need for transportation within the city,” said Councillor Bill Sears. “The hope is that this will eventually go into an actual transit system.” Hladun estimated the total cost of running the subsidized taxi system for a full year based on 30,000 to 40,000 riders would be in the range of $150,000 to $175,000. “The City could decide a much lower level of expenditure and then could pro rate it,” he said. The pros of providing
a subsidized taxi service would be the ability of the City to limit costs by controlling the number of coupons or chits printed and the ability of users to get service 24 hours a day seven days a week. The number of cabs could be matched to need, and drivers would be able to assist riders who have handicaps. Subsidized taxi system cons would include limited or delayed service during high demand periods, the chance of poor quality of service or fraudulent behaviour/cheating, and the fact that the only people who would benefit are those who receive coupons. “(The coupons) would be allocated on the basis of persons in need,” said Hladun. The City would also have to deal with the perception that is supporting private businesses. Councillor Wayne Throndson suggested the trickiest part of the subsidized taxi program would be the allocation of the chits amongst the various groups that need them. “I am hoping that task might be allocated to the
committee because I know they have had the best discussions with the groups involved. It can be tricky as to how many Augustana gets, how many CDSS gets, how many the Camrose Open Door gets.” The committee feels that the City could run a single bus that does a one hour run from the west end to the east end of Camrose for about $200,000 a year at $70 per hour. “If you run multiple routes and you run weekends and evenings, you just add up the hours and then it really becomes a case of how much you want to spend,” said Hladun. “If you want to do multiple routes, weekends, evenings and other services, the costs start to escalate.” Councillor Lindstrand said the subsidized taxi system could be a partial answer to the residents of lodges who are at a disadvantage now that The Bethany Group has decided to discontinue the mini bus service. Councillor Agnes Hoveland questioned whether it would be pos-
sible for the subsidized taxi program to use the mini buses that were used by The Bethany Group. “It would add a different style of vehicle and provide more capacity,” she said. Hladun said the idea is worth investigating. “The trick is to do something that provides multiple passenger capability. The cab companies might be willing to do something very simple like running a shuttle between Cornerstone and the Smith Clinic and downtown.” Councillor Sears said that the City needs to establish some criteria before starting the trial taxi subsidy program. “I think we have to have some really clear evaluation processes in place so we know if we are successful or not. I don’t know what those successes are but I think it is important to have that. We need to know what we are shooting for.” Camrose City council set aside $52,500 in the 2015 budget to address the issue of public transit after an attempt to attract expressions of interest from potential transit operators.

A Joyful Noise comes to Camrose Cheryl Balay director of operations, A Joyful Noise
As part of its “Around the World” theme this year, A Joyful Noise is going on the road March 27 to Camrose. The choir is thrilled to be sharing the concert with the talented choirs of the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. The concert will be held in the Augustana chapel, with its phenomenal acoustics, and will feature Mannskor: Augustana’s Men’s Choir, and Sangkor: Augustana’s Women’s Choir, along
with the Thursday Choir of A Joyful Noise. Inspired to travel and preparing for a tour to Iceland in June, choir members have been exploring the music of other countries and cultures this year. At the Camrose concert, their choral expedition will touch down on the continents of Africa and Europe and feature songs of joy and grace. A Joyful Noise choirs have been performing in Edmonton and area for over ten years. The very first Joyful Noise choir, now known as Thurs-
day Choir, was founded in 2004 by voice teacher Eva Bostrand. So many people have asked to join that there are now three A Joyful Noise choirs offering a rich choral experience to singers of varying levels of experience and different levels of time commitment. More information about all three choirs is available at www.ajoyfulnoisechoir.ca. Tickets are available at the door. For further information, contact the Augustana Fine Arts Office 780-679-1532.

Camrose Camerata will host Shumayela, a youth choir from the Kokopelli Choir Association of Edmonton at Messiah Lutheran Church (4810-50 Street) on Saturday, April 11, at 7 p.m. Camerata has just completed its 10th anniversary season and is excited to work together on this concert with an accomplished youth choir. “The concert theme of “Stories” is one that opens up a rainbow of possibilities for both choirs,” said Joy-Anne Murphy, of Camerata. “We will be sharing all sorts of musical stories, ranging from Folk Songs to African American Spirituals.” Shumayela (from the title of a renowned South African anti-apartheid song “Shumayela Ivangeli”) is a group of treble and changing voices in junior and high school. This vibrant group has travelled throughout Canada, sharing its love of music of all styles and cultures.

Resident Camrose musician Tova Olson is a local connection, as she serves as the choir’s accompanist. Shumayela is currently celebrating its ninth season with the Kokopelli Choir Association. “The choir offers a focus on music education, with singers learning about healthy vocal production and vibrant performance presence as well as musi-
cal literacy, theory, and sight singing,” said Murphy. “Shumayela provides a secure and accepting social environment where all singers feel their importance as members of the group. Most importantly, Shumayela has fun and creates energetic and engaging music.” Shumayela director Kimberley Denis is known for her energy and enthusiasm both on stage and off. She is sought after as a soloist, choral cli-
nician, and adjudicator for voice and choir. Kim recently starred in a production at the Bailey Theatre’s production of The Last Five Years last summer. She currently teaches voice at Alberta College. Join Camrose Camerata and Shumayela in a journey through Stories. Tickets are available at the door, or in advance from choir members. Camrose Police Service members will be checking to make sure you are wearing your seat belt. “The Province of Alberta comes out with a strategic traffic enforcement initiative every month and this month it has to do with seat belts and child restraints,” said CPS Const. Adam Belanger. The use of seat belts became mandatory in Alberta almost thirty years ago, in 1987. The fine for not buckling up can be expensive at $115. “We are still finding quite a few instances where they are not worn,” said Belanger. Seatbelts are meant to work in conjunction with, not apart from the air bag systems that are part of most vehicles. In fact, air bags can sometimes cause injury when seat belts are not used. “If you are in a collision that causes the air bag to deploy and you aren’t wearing a seat belt that air bag is pushing you back as you are moving forward, thus creating more of a chance of whiplash or concussion,” said Belanger. “If you are wearing a seat belt then you are held towards the back of the seat and the air bag helps to cushion
the impact. Both systems have to work together.” Seat belts also help drivers maintain control of their vehicles when the loss of traction causes them to slide or swerve. “When you lose control or are involved in a collision that seat belt keeps you where you are supposed to be, in the driver’s seat, not getting tossed around inside,” said Belanger. “If you are not buckled up your body will slide to a place where you can’t reach the pedals or turn the steering wheel.” In Alberta, the driver is responsible to ensure all passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured using either a child safety seat or a seat belt. Child safety seats Child safety seats reduce the risk of a child being injured or killed in a crash by up to 75 per cent. Children from birth to one year of age should be placed in a seat facing backwards, while those aged one to nine should be faced forward. Children who are between 18 kg and 36 kg (80 lbs), under 145 cm, or under nine years of age are safest in a booster seat. Without a booster seat, adult seat belts ride too high on the belly and
neck and can cause serious internal injuries in the event of a crash. A child is 3.5 times more likely to suffer a head injury in a crash when just using an adult seat belt than when using a booster seat. To check if it is time to have your child move to a seat belt, have him or her sit on the back seat with the lap-shoulder belt buckled. It is okay to use a seat belt if all of the following statements apply: his or her whole back is touching the back of the vehicle seat; when sitting back, your child’s knees bend comfortably at the edge of the vehicle seat; the lap portion of the seat belt is riding low across the hips, touching the tops of your child’s legs; the shoulder portion of the belt is crossing between your child’s neck and arm; your child can and will remain in this position for the entire trip. Usage goal The Alberta Occupant Restraint Program envisions a future where all road users in Alberta will consistently use occupant restraints correctly to reduce and eliminate death and injury due to motor vehicle collisions. The program’s goal is to achieve a provincial seat belt wearing rate of 98 per cent by 2015.
GENEALOGY SPEAKER
Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Camrose Genealogy Society invited speaker Shannon Cherkowski to share her knowledge of research at the Camrose Public Library on March 14. Cherkowski is an experienced genealogist and adoption reunification specialist. The Camrose Genealogy Society meets the second Thursday of every month (except July and August) in the Irving Room at the Library at 7 p.m. The next meeting is on April 9 with guest speaker Lorraine Lohr Cathro, who has published a book titled “Roots and Adventures – A Prairie Childhood.”
Residences evacuated Camrose Police Service and Camrose Fire Department members were dispatched to residential fire in the Valleyview Subdivision on March 15. Several neighboring residences were evacuated for safety reasons due to winds that were creating potential hazards of the fire spreading. Fire volunteers were able to extinguish the blaze, however significant damage resulted to the involved residence. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Also on March 15 police freed a heavily intoxicated man from the flowing water in the creek valley and transported him to the hospital for further examination.
Celtic Tenors supporting work being done in Africa By Murray Green
The Celtic Tenors will be playing a concert at the Bailey Theatre on March 26 at 7 p.m. But what you might not know is the group’s involvement with Mercy Ships. Prior to the concert the Celtic Tenors, Matthew Gilsenan, James Nelson and Daryl Simpson, will have a special presentation on aid work being done in Africa onboard the world’s largest charity hospital ship, Africa Mercy. The Celtic Tenors have had worldwide success and have become global phenomenons, touring consistently over the past 10 years. During their Canadian tour the group has partnered with international charity Mercy Ships, which uses volunteer driven hospital ships to provide free medical care and training to those most in need. “We are truly thrilled to be partnering with such a world class group, the Celtic Tenors. Few acts can captivate an audience the way that they do and we

are overjoyed that they are joining us in spreading the incredible story of Mercy Ships. Through their music and this partnership, they are helping us to bring hope and healing to the world’s
poor,” said Mercy Ships Canada national director, Tim Maloney. The Celtic Tenors hold a special place in their hearts for aid work in Africa because Nelson has been
working with his charity, Kenya Builds, since 2007. “My experience in Kenya changed my life, I am happy to support the work Mercy Ships is doing in Africa” said Nelson.
After listening to a short presentation on Mercy Ships, fans will hear songs from classical, folk, Irish and pop genres. Gilsenan, Nelson and Simpson combine their unique voices, character and humour to the music. The Celtic Tenors will give you a night to remember. They genuinely love what they do and you’ll see that shine through in each rendition of beautiful Celtic songs like the haunting “Danny Boy” and exhilarating classics like “Nessun Dorma.” Mercy Ships uses hospital ships to deliver free, world-class health care services, capacity building and sustainable development to those without access in the developing world. Each year Mercy Ships has more than 1,200 volunteers from over 40 nations. Professionals including surgeons, dentists, nurses, health care trainers, teachers, cooks, seamen, engineers, and agriculturalists donate their time and skills to the effort.

Adolph David Kushnerick of Camrose, AB passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2015 in Camrose at the age of 83 years. Adolph was born on September 2, 1931 to Mike and Nancy Kushnerick. Adolph was raised with his nine brothers and three sisters on the family farm near Round Hill. Hard work and shenanigans were always his style. He met Cora Lillevolden at Duhamel in the fall of 1951 and they were married in 1952, then blessed with three children along their road of life. Adolph laboured, drove truck, and became a licensed cheesemaker, before starting his lengthy career with Imperial Oil. Work, hunting, fishing, curling and softball were almost as important as family, and he always managed to find time for anyone at any time. Travel was also a part of his life to which he always looked forward. He and Cora retired to Camrose to spend the next part of their lives keeping up the acreage, working the ever-expanding garden and chasing grandchildren. Any fur-bearing or feathered creature that crossed his path was soon to be nicknamed and pampered with his utmost attention. After Cora passed away in 2010, Adolph continued to enjoy the comforts of family, friends and the peacefulness that was to be enjoyed at the acreage. Being known for his giving nature and kind-hearted ways, Adolph will be sadly missed. He is survived by his children Kathryn (David), Alice (Brad) and James (Thersea); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Cremation will follow the service and inurnment will take place at a later date at Round Hill Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA.

On the Other Hand… “Time Out” Today I want to apologize to the White Rabbit (of Alice in Wonderland fame), as I confess to stealing his theme song and making it my own. I run from appointment to appointment; meeting to meeting; event to event; and, obligation to obligation. I check my watch, study my daytimer, and consult the scheduler on my iPhone (hey, I just found fifteen unscheduled minutes – who wants them?). As I move impatiently (but never grudgingly and always with a smile) through this never ending list of places to go, people to see and things to do, I merrily sing… “I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date. No time to say ‘Hello, Goodbye’, I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.” I’m not always sure where I am going and occasionally not even sure why, but this one thing I know for absolute certain – I am busy and I am late!!! The days become a blur. If that is true, how much blurrier become my relationships? “I’m late.” The activities blend together and become indistinguishable. “I’m late.” I fall asleep in one meeting and wake up in another. “I’m late.” And the greatest embarrassment of all, I get where I am scheduled to be (according to my ever faithful and over filled calendar) and discover to my absolute horror – “I’m late,” yes late, for a very important date. That’s when I hear a delightful (but somewhat exasperated) mother and father say to their child – “go take a time out!” I think to myself, what a splendid idea! A time out! Time out from the routine, time out from the race, time out from the maniacal movement from this to that and then to the other. I need a time out. Ahhh…but I keep busy and I continue to feel like I’m late, yes I’m late, for a very important date. (At least that the date is important is what I keep telling myself. It must be; after all, it is in my calendar.) So I keep filling up my calendar, I keep running to my meetings, I keep my appointments and I meet my obligations. And of course, I continue merrily singing: “No time to say ‘hello goodbye,’ I’m, late, I’m, late, I’m late.” For moments that come and go all too quickly, I think about a time out – but I surrender over and over again to the constraints of a calendar of my own making. I tell myself, I tell my family and I tell my friends that someday soon I will take a time out. On the other hand, that theme song may just be written in stone… Yikes! Time Out!
Building Canada fund launched By Dan Jensen
The provincial government is accepting applications from small Alberta communities for financial assistance under the Small Communities Fund. Launched by the federal government in March of 2014, the Small Communities Fund (part of the Building Canada Fund) designates $94 million in federal funding to support infrastructure projects in Alberta communities with a population of 100,000 or less. “The Small Communities
Fund is focused on supporting local priorities that contribute to economic growth, a cleaner environment and stronger communities,” said Crowfoot Member of Parliament and Minister of State (Finance) Kevin Sorenson. “The program continues the tradition of cost sharing infrastructure investments among the three levels of government: federal, provincial, municipal.” The funding is in addition to the revenue communities receive from the Gas Tax Fund, which goes towards a
wide range of projects, including: public transit, drinking water, wastewater, solid waste management, green energy, innovation, connectivity and broadband, brownfield redevelopment, disaster mitigation infrastructure, local and regional airports, short-line rail, highways and major roads. Application for Small Communities Fund assistance may be made by visiting http:// www.municipalaffairs,alberta. ca/smallcommunitiesfund. cfm. The deadline for applications is April 2.

March is Fraud Prevention Month March is Fraud Prevention Month and Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada wants to help Canadians protect themselves and their hardearned money. Although financial fraud may fall into the “it’ll never happen to me” category in the minds of some Canadians, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada has news for us. The CPA recently released a survey that found nearly one-third of Canadians have been a victim of financial fraud in their life. “It’s an astounding number,” says Jeff Schwartz, executive director of Consolidated Credit. “People may forget that there are fraudsters out there, whose full-time job is separating you from your money – and they don’t care who you are or where you’re from.” Other findings from the survey include: Those victimized reported credit card fraud as the most common type (67 per cent), followed by debit card fraud (29 per cent); Reports of Online fraud jumped from six per cent in 2014 to 16 per cent in 2015; Almost half (48 per
cent) say they are uncomfortable making online purchases; Despite concerns about online safety, more and more Canadians are embracing digital payment technology. Schwartz sees a disconnect between the online enthusiasm of Canadians and their safety fears. “It’s like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is clicking,” comments Schwartz. “We need to address our security fears and take action in our daily lives so that we can protect ourselves and our bank accounts from thieves.” Schwartz and the team at Consolidated Credit recommend the following five tips that Canadians should put into place today: 1. Use stronger passwords. Your password is the key to your castle, and you need to craft one that is worthy of its duty. Mix and combine letters, numbers, and special characters. Try to update it at least once every three months. If you use the same password for every account and never change it, it’s like creating a master key for thieves. 2. Lock your mobile devices. If your password
is the key to your castle, your mobile device is like the extra key hidden under the door mat. Many of us have valuable information stored on our devices, along with bookmarked, password-stored access to bank accounts and shopping profiles. Protect your device with a password of its own. 3. Use secure websites. Only enter your credit card information on trusted sites. Don’t click suspicious links in e-mails that take you to pages that may just be mimicking the official site. Look for the padlock icon in the URL bar, along with an extra “S” in the URL (as in https://www…). 4. Check your credit profile. Keep a regular eye on your profile through credit bureaus Equifax and TransUnion and report any discrepancies immediately. You can request a free copy of your credit report, or sign up for ongoing credit file monitoring. 5. Employ the sniff test. If something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Be vigilant. Whether it’s a free cruise or a billionaire heir in Uganda, never give out your credit card number unless you’re completely confident.

Indoor Training Program 2015 In
Maximum Golf is a group-based golf training and conditioning program meant to prepare golfers for the season ahead and increase one’s ability to swing more efficiently through the ball. This program is based on the repetition of a concise set of drills that allow you to practice without requiring the use of a golf ball. These drills teach you how to swing more efficiently and with better swing mechanics. Feeling is very important to this teaching method, proven for over 30 years. In 2015, this program will be taught in a two-week (4 sessions) condensed format. Given that people live very busy lifestyles, coupled with others who like to take a winter vacation, we understand that making a commitment to a program which lasts several weeks is too difficult. The condensed format offers a wealth of skills, without being too difficult to fit into one’s schedule. To avoid disappointment, you are encouraged to book early in this extremely popular program.

Book your table now for Community Registration Night Submitted
You are invited to be a part of the ninth annual Community Registration Night on Thursday, Sept. 3. The purpose of the event is to showcase clubs, organizations and businesses which offer an arts, recreation, learning or sports activity, and recruit volunteers. Many of our displayers use this opportunity to sign up participants for their fall programs or courses. Community Registration Night is made possible through the efforts and contributions of several local organizations. Camrose Adult Learning Council takes the lead role in orga-
nization, registration, promotion and management of the event. The City of Camrose and the Camrose Regional Exhibition provide the Field House, tables and chairs for the event. Camrose and District Support Services provides funding for advertising. Volunteers from Camrose and District Support Services, Fox Taekwon-Do and Family Violence Action Society assist with the planning and execution of Community Registration Night and community organizations help out with the physical set up and take down on event day. Last year, over 1,100 people attended Community
Registration Night and 68 displayers participated in the event. The event will be open to the public from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Displayers set-up between 3:30 and 6 p.m. and take down between 9 and 9:30 p.m. We are delighted to be again offering a small demonstration area (20 ft. by 10 ft.) which will allow eight organizations or businesses to each demonstrate an activity for 10 minutes between 6:45 and 8:45 p.m. There is an extra $20 charge to displayers who choose to book a 10 minute demonstration time. The eight demo opportunities
will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis so register early if you want to access this opportunity. The Field House PA system is available for use during demos but displayers will be expected to provide their own music equipment if required. The number of tables available for this event are limited and will be available on a first-come, firstserved basis. Displayers can book a maximum of two six foot tables and four chairs. There are several table spaces with access to electricity. Community Registration Night is promoted through
a wide variety of media. In order to be included in all of the publicity, your registration must be received by June 18. You can register for a table(s) by completing the registration form on the Camrose Adult Learning Council website (www.camroselearning.com) and returning it with your registration fee by mail or hand delivery to our office on the second floor, 4707-56 Street, Camrose. We can accept either cash or cheque for your registration fee. If you have any questions about this event, please call Diane at 780-672-8754 or email calc@camroselearning.com.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Satisfy your desire to explore the world
Tony Smith By Dan Jensen
The award winning 2015 Jeep Cherokee at Camrose Chrysler delivers best-in-class capability, premium materials, exceptional fuel economy and a refined cabin offering an appealing list of standard and available features. “It allows you to satisfy your restless desire to explore the world while adhering to your principles for efficient travel,” said Camrose Chrysler sales manager Noel Skoglund. Efficient
Jeep Cherokee’s standard engine, the 2.4 litre Tigershark Multiair I-4, delivers impressive fuel economy as low as 7.7 litres per 100 km highway. From its fully isolated aluminum head cover with an integrated oil separation system to its high-pressure die-cast aluminum block, the Tigershark was engineered to deliver a quiet and refined ride. Plus, for those with dreams of heading for aggressive off-road destinations, it takes its 184 hp and 171 lb.-ft. of torque and crushes it down to a boulder pounding crawl ratio of 56:1 when paired with the available Jeep Active Drive-Lock 4WD
system on the Trail Rated Cherokee Trailhawk. The available 3.2 litres Pentastar V6 is engineered for those who require efficient performance combined with some extra muscle. Demanding drivers will appreciate the 271 hp, 239 lb.-ft. of torque and fuel efficiency as low as 8.1 litres per 100 km highway. Economies are further enhanced with the engine’s new Start-Stop technology that automatically shuts off the engine as the vehicle brakes to a stop, then seamlessly restarts it when the brake pedal is released. Shift modes on the nine-speed automatic transmission are determined by intelligent software that monitors engine torque as well as kickdown, acceleration and road grade changes. Jeep Cherokee has best-in-class towing when equipped with the 3.2 Pentastar V6 and the available Trailer Tow Group. Every 4x4 Cherokee is equipped with a Jeep Selec-Terrain Traction Management System, giving you the power to tackle Mother Nature’s toughest conditions. You’ll have up to five settings that deliver ultimate driving stability
by coordinating 12 vehicle systems, including throttle control, transmission shifting, transfer case, traction control and Electronic Stability Control. Choose up to five sure-footed modes: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/ Mud and available Rock. Rugged meets refined
Every sculpted inch of the Cherokee’s interior has been thoughtfully designed to offer versatile convenience and absolute beauty. Choose from four luxurious interiors, including an all-new Light Frost option, offered in sumptuous Nappa leather-faced or premium cloth. Soft touch surfaces are always within reach, adding even more to Cherokee’s upscale appeal. Options abound, including heated and ventilated front seating for added warmth and cooling, and a heated steering wheel for welcome relief in the cold of winter. There are up to 18 cubbies, pockets and bins throughout, giving you plenty of spots to store phones, computers, tablets, maps or gaming devices. Flip up the floor of the rear cargo area and you’ll find three levels of rear cargo under-floor storage systems, each with an integrated storage tray.
Opt for the fold-flat front passenger seat for another secret spot that’s revealed when you simply flip up the seat cushion. The 60/40 split-folding reclining rear seats can travel up to 152 mm fore and aft for adjustable legroom flexibility. When the entire rear bench is folded you have a nearly flat surface and approximately 1,554 litres of room. With the available award-winning and intuitive Uconnect multimedia centre, you’re always connected, informed and entertained. You can also use your voice to control nearly every feature hands-free with the latest available voice-recognition technology. Uconnect employs GP navigation for audible turn-by-turn directions, and detailed 3D maps help to ensure you arrive on time. A wireless charging pad on the front console keeps important devices in play. Steering wheel fingertip controls let you instantly scroll through a rich selection of vehicle data. This vast array of information is displayed on the seven-inch customizable
in cluster display centre that’s within clear view. Safety and security
Over 70 standard and available safety and security features add to Cherokee’s brave stewardship. The Parkview rear backup camera displays a rearview video image with dynamic distance grid lines when in reverse. A vehicle-wide network of safety sensors helps maintain vehicle control. Electronic Stability Control coordinates Electronic Roll Mitigation, Antilock Brake System, Brake Assist, All-Speed Traction Control and Trailer Sway Control, sending them into action when needed. Radar sensors detect when Cherokee may be approaching another vehicle too rapidly and send an audible and visual alert to the driver, along with a brake jerk if the driver does not react in time. The warning and limited braking are intended to provide the driver enough time to react and avoid a potential collision. You can see the 2015 Jeep Cherokee by visiting Camrose Chrysler on Highway 13 East, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2476 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Northstars to host provincial men’s hockey championships By Murray Green
The Daysland Northstars senior men’s double-A hockey team will be hosting the provincial championships in both Daysland and Camrose from March 27 to 29. The four time former Battle River Hockey League champions will be hosting a six-team provincials to determine the medal winners. Friday games will be hosted at the Daysland Arena, while most of the Satur-
day and Sunday games will be in the EnCana Arena in Camrose. “We received the bid to host based on our success over the last 20 years,” explained player Brad Trautman, who formerly played for the Augustana Vikings. “In total, we have 22 league titles, including the four in a row until this year. The provincials are awarded to a team that represents Alberta well in hockey.”
The Daysland Northstars will be the hosts and another team from the Battle River league will also advance to the provincials. “We had to have the provincials in a larger centre because of the hotel rooms that were needed. Hosting games in both Daysland and Camrose is ideal because we can showcase our level of hockey in Camrose as well,” said Trautman. Daysland will play
Westlock at 8 p.m. Friday in Daysland and the Elk Point Elks at 8 p.m. Saturday in Daysland, due to a Kodiaks game on the same night. Bonnyville will play at 5 p.m. on Friday in Daysland against the Ranchland team and then at 10 a.m. against Devon in Camrose. The Devon Barons, Westlock Warriors, Elk Point Elks, Bonnyville, Devon Barons and a team representing Ranchland
will join Daysland at the provincials. The bronze medal game is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday and the final will be at 4 p.m. in the EnCana Arena. The Northstars consist of many former Augustana Vikings and Camrose Kodiaks, as well as other local players. Daysland had a 21 per cent success rate on the power play and killed off 83 per cent of its penalties this season.

The Augustana Vikings men’s soccer team is holding a camp to prepare youth for the outdoor minor soccer season. Young athletes are invited to Augustana Campus to build their competitive edge with the expertise of the university’s athletes and coaching staff. The Vikings are offering a fun and inspiring Spring Break experience to Camrose and area soccer players. The camp will take place from March 30 to April 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily for ages eight to 18. The camp will be instructed by Vikings players with organization and curriculum designed and developed by coach David McCarthy.
Vikings instructors, left to right, Adam McKenzie, Mark Wrubleski, Dillon Lehman and Braeden McKenzie
Coach McCarthy is excited for the upcoming camp. “This is a great oppor-
tunity for my players to connect with community soccer athletes. They obviously have
a big passion for the game to share and I think it’s a good experience for them to develop
their leadership and communication skills on the coaching side of the game,” he said. The Vikings will take the lead on mentoring camp participants under his direction. “I’m excited to coach the youth because I grew up playing soccer in Camrose,” said captain Mark Wrubleski. “I am looking forward to helping the youth expand both their soccer skills and social skills in a team atmosphere. I think those are key no matter where a person goes in life.” For more information on the camp visit the Vikings website. You can register online. Only a limited number of spots are available to preserve a quality ratio of coaches to young athletes.

The Augustana Vikings lost in two straight playoff games, 6-5 and 3-1 at the hands of the SAIT Trojans, March 13 and 14. Augustana faced SAIT in the semifinals of the ACAC. In the wide open first game, five different Vikings scored to spread out the offence. Brad Bourke, Connor McLaughlin, Mathew Foster, Dane Bonish and Alex Rodgers collected single markers, while goalie Joel Danyluk made 24 of 30 saves. In Camrose, Jeremy Beirnes supplied the only tally in the closer checking contest. Danyluk started the game, but Andy Williams came in relief to stop 23 of 24 shots. This marked the third straight year the Vikings have earned a bronze medal after capturing the league title in 2011-12.
Kodiaks slay Dragons in second overtime By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks battled in extra time to slay the Drumheller Dragons. They needed nearly eight minutes into the second overtime to win the game 3-2 and the series in five games. Braeden Salverda slipped the puck past goalie Curtis Skip, not an easy thing to do, with help from Scott Ferguson and Adam Wheeldon. Camrose peppered Skip with 65 shots before he broke at the EnCana Arena March 19. Cole McBride opened the scoring in the first frame.
Ryker Leer netted the second tally for the Kodiaks between two Drumheller goals. After no scoring in the third and the first overtime, Camrose wore down the Dragons with the fast-paced action in front of 1,216 fans. Devin McDonald was also busy in the Camrose net with 47 saves on 49 shots. The Kodiaks took a commanding 3-1 lead in the playoff series against the Drumheller Dragons with a 3-1 victory in the fourth game of the second round of the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs. “It’s nice to get three
wins, but it is still a race to four and we are not there yet. We still have one more to go,” said forward Brett Njaa. “We want to take care of business because we don’t want to go back to Drumheller. They have a tough rink to play in, so we have to take of the business at home” Salverda again popped in the winning marker with five seconds left in the middle frame in Drumheller to push the Dragons to the edge of being eliminated, March 17. “It’s special to win at home in the playoffs and hopefully we get a good
crowd,” he said prior to the fifth game of the best of seven series. Ferguson opened the scoring for the Kodiaks shorthanded and Cam Gotaas added an insurance marker in the third on offence. Goalie McDonald made 25 of 26 saves to backstop his team to victory. The Dragons needed overtime to secure its only win of the series. Camrose dominated the first two periods, but the Dragons came out hard in the third to tie the match and force overtime. McBride scored twice for Camrose in the second period, both on power play opportunities.
“We played not to lose, instead of trying to win. We sat back too much. They took the play to us and that is not good for any team to do,” recalled Njaa. “We learned from it. We knew, we weren’t good enough. We will be better because of it.” McDonald turned away 20 of 23 shots. Camrose led in shots 25-10 after two periods. The netminder earned a shut out by stopping all 29 shots directed his way in a 2-0 victory in the second game in the EnCana Arena, March 14. Continued on page 32

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced our Conservative Government’s intent to introduce legislation to keep Canadian families and their communities safe by ensuring that the most heinous criminals like Clifford Olson, will be sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility of parole. This legislation will follow through on our Government’s 2013 Speech from the Throne commitment to ensure that a life sentence means a sentence for life. We are building on our ongoing commitment to keep Canada’s streets and communities safe by holding violent repeat offenders accountable and ensuring that the rights of victims are considered above the rights of criminals. The pending legislation will hold the most heinous perpetrators of violence accountable and protect Canadians from further violence by these individuals. As your Member of Parliament, I have always heard from you that you want assurances that those who break the law are punished for their actions. Year after year, I receive letters, emails and phone calls asking for penalties to match the severity of crimes committed. That is why this week our Government will introduce legislation to ensure that criminals who commit horrific crimes face serious criminal penalties, and that a life sentence in Canada means exactly that: a life sentence. We are ensuring that the Canadian justice system no longer allows the worst criminals to pose a risk to Canadians, our families, or our communities. We are targeting individuals who commit the most heinous crimes such as: those who plot kidnapping or sexual assault that results in murder; those with such contempt for law and order that they kill the police and correctional officers who are charged with protecting our streets; those who despise our values and way of life that carry out deadly acts of terrorism; and those who commit crimes of a particularly brutal nature. In addition to the mandatory sentences discussed above, courts will have the discretion to impose life sentences without parole in any other first degree murder case or in circumstances where an offender previously convicted of murder, or of an international killing under the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, commits another murder. To address legitimate constitutional concerns, this

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Armena Continued from page 35
The Armena Athletic Association contest entry included a short video put together by Hans Olson and a song written by Anna and Bill Harder that illustrated the importance of the skating shack as a gathering place for people in the community and beyond. “We amended the entry from the last one that we presented in January,” said Wetsch. “We had a number of people review the written submission and video and changed some of the pictures to emphasize the fact that the new facility will be used year round. One of the misunderstandings of judges was that it was just going to be a place to change your skates in the winter. In fact, one of the main reasons we are doing all of this is so that we can have various functions. The 4-H group will be able to meet there, and we could potentially have movie nights where we project movies onto a wall. The website we have really tries to explain it as Armena’s only year-round multipurpose facility.” The association’s original contest application said that there are people skating on the rink almost every night. “Up to now people have used their own equipment to clear the ice. The kitchen (in the addition) would be used for skating parties and winter activities. In the summer it would be used as a concession for ball, soccer and community picnics. Hired help, as well as volunteers, will construct the addition. The skating shack acts as a meeting place for young and old. The skating shack brings people together and keeps our community strong with the relationships that are developed there.” Calvin Mulvey, one of three judges from the Cassils Community Centre Building Committee, winner of the UFA Get ‘n’ Give contest on Jan. 27, said the Armena Athletic Association application was very catchy. “They are a small community that showed a lot of community spirit and the project will be very worthwhile to keeping the community alive.” The UFA Get ‘n’ Give contest invites rural communities to profile local projects that will make a major impact in their area. Community groups send in innovative pitches, including locally made videos that convey the heart of the projects. Winning community projects are chosen by the previous winner in a pay-it-forward style. Ken Hoppins, chair of the UFA board of directors, is thrilled the contest is touching the lives of people in communities around the province. “Get ‘n’ Give is bringing communities across Alberta together,” said Hoppins. “These communities built Alberta and UFA was there for part of that. We want to continue that relationship.” The $50,000 will be presented to the Armena Athletic Association at a community event at the end of April.
