Seniors are sometimes targeted by criminals who prey on unsuspecting Albertans on their doorsteps. The Fair Trading Act protects all Albertans from aggressive door-todoor salespeople. Before allowing a door-to-door seller into your home or office, ask to see his or her identification. Once you decide to buy, make sure you get a signed sales contract that includes the company’s contact information and a detailed description of the goods or services, including an itemized price list. Service Alberta recently investigated a case where an older Albertan responded to an advertisement in a senior’s magazine placed by Wills R Us, a company operated by Michael Nathan Steinberg, who offered to prepare a will and a land title transfer in the senior’s home. The senior was encouraged to sign documents that essentially transferred all his money and property to a complete stranger. Following Service Alberta’s investigation, the power of attorney was cancelled. Steinberg was prosecuted, found guilty of operating without a direct seller’s licence and fined a total of $800. Consumers can call Service Alberta’s toll-free Consumer Contact Centre at 1-877-427-4088 to confirm that a business or charity is licensed or they can find this information on the Service Canada website. Ser vice A lber ta works with law enforcement, other levels of government and business groups to help Albertans: recognize fraud in its various forms; learn how and where to report it; and how to stop fraud before a con artist or scammer cheats someone out of their hardearned money.

Ramsey wins car in Roll Up the Rim to Win contest By Dan Jensen

She couldn’t have asked for a better (belated) birthday present. Camrose resident Amanda Ramsey hit the jackpot Feb. 12 when she discovered she had won a 2015 Toyota Camry XSE valued at approximately $30,000, one of 50 grand prizes in the Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim to Win contest. “It happened two days after my birthday,” said Ramsey. “It is the best thing that has ever happened to me.” Ramsey purchased her coffee at the west end Tim Hortons in Camrose but didn’t check to see if she was a winner until she arrived at her office at the Edmonton International Airport. “At first after rolling up the rim I thought it said I had won a camera,” she said. “It took me about a minute to figure out that what it really said was that I had won a Camry. When I told others they all wanted to see the cup.” The rest of her day was pretty much shot. “I had a hard time believing what had happened,” said Ramsey. “The only other thing I had won was a cabbage at a farmers’ market when I was 11.” After going on line to see how she could claim her prize, Ramsey went to the Tim Hortons office at the airport, where she received a claim form that she was told she had to mail to New Brunswick.

Ken, left, and David Mah, co-owners of Tim Hortons in Camrose, celebrate after presenting the keys to Amanda Ramsey, winner of a new Toyota Camry in the Tim Hortons Roll Up the Rim to Win contest. A total of 50 Camrys were handed out by Tim Hortons.

“I sent the form with the rim and made sure I insured it for a lot of money,” she said. “A week and a half later I received a call from a Tim Hortons representative who wanted to verify the information. She congratulated me on being a potential winner and I was like, no, not potential.” Ramsey is hoping to

sell the Camry and use the money to pay off the car that she currently drives, a 2012 Ford Fiesta. “I love the car I have now,” she said. “It is cheap on gas and gets me where I need to go. I might get something bigger in a couple years, but for now it is good.” Tim Hortons Camrose

owner Ken Mah said that having a grand prize winner was exciting not just for him, but for his team members, guests and the community. “Our guests are happy when they win a donut or a coffee so you can imagine how thrilling it is when someone rolls up the rim

and realizes they have won a new vehicle.” The Camrose Tim Hortons has given away 17,475 Roll Up the Rim Prizes this year alone. Prizes may be claimed until May 8. Contest rules, odds of winning and prizing information can be found at rolluptherimtowin.com.

Government and Olson on road to recovery By Dan Jensen

Alberta Agriculture Food and Rural Development Minister and Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Verlyn Olson knew the budget tabled in the Alberta legislature March 26 wasn’t going to satisfy everyone. “There are always people on both sides of the spectrum,” said Olson, who is on the mend after a pancreatic Islet transplant. “Some people accuse us of cutting too much and not spending more money and others are just the opposite.” The budget is the first step in the government’s plan to reduce expenditures by $8.6 billion over the next three years ($1.9 billion this year, $2.95 million next and 3.75 the year after that) and bring the province into a situation where the debt is totally wiped out. “We are taking a careful measured approach,” said Olson. We are going to be reducing government spending, increasing revenue through fees ($1.5 billion this year and $2.6 bil-

Verlyn Olson

lion next), and using our savings.” Using some of the money that has built up in the contingency fund, said Olson, will allow the government to continue to build much needed infrastructure. “It makes sense to use that money rather than doing something more drastic,” he said. Olson said the fact that the government will be obtaining more revenue

for the health system from taxes rather than premiums shows the government has been listening to the people. “There were a couple of issues with the health care premiums. One was just the administrative cost of collecting them, and the other was that in a lot of cases those costs were passed on to the employer, of which the government was one. We felt that if we were going to bring back anything that related to payment for health care that it would be most efficient to have it as part of one tax return.” Ag ministry

The budget forced Olson to make some tough decisions in his own department. “Alberta Agriculture Food and Development was definitely not left untouched,” said the minister. “Treasury department told us how much we would have to spend and it was less than last year by about $16 million, so something had to give somewhere.” Nine of the Agriculture Financial Services Corpora-

tion’s 55 offices will be asked to close their doors. “The offices (that will be closed) for the most part are just a few miles down the road from other AFSC offices,” said Olson. “They are ones that have very low staff members, very low traffic and not a lot of files.” The budget for the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, which provides grants to assist with innovation, industry development, food safety and marketing, was reduced by $4.8 million. “They will still receive a little over $32 million so they will still have a resource there to support the industry,” said Olson. “They will still be doing what they have been doing but with somewhat less money.” The budget for the irrigation rehabilitation program which supports irrigation infrastructure in southern Alberta was reduced by $2 million, as was the funding for Edmonton Northlands and the Calgary Stampede Association, which up to now have been

receiving over $9 million a year. “That will be a significant reduction for them,” said Olson, adding that the funding for the province’s seven regional ag societies, including the Camrose Regional Exhibition, will remain the same. Olson said whether the budget will be considered acceptable by the majority of Albertans in the next election still remains to be seen. “There are those who suggest that having an election at this time would be an opportunistic move on the part of the government. A counter point would be that this is not a very opportune time because people don’t like to see their fees and taxes increased and they don’t like to see reductions. In my mind it shows some strong leadership on the part of the premier. He is intent on not leaving the province in a vulnerable economic condition. On the other hand we are not going to slash and burn and try to do everything in a single year.” Continued on page 5

Olson on the road to recovery Continued from page 4

Although he has already secured the nomination as the PC candidate for Wetaskiwin-Camrose, Olson may not be able to do much campaigning. “I have been told they are putting me back on the waiting list (for islet transplant) and that I could be called in 10 minutes or a year, depending on whether they find a donor,” he said. “It has created a bit of uncertainty in my life, but I had a discussion with my family over Christmas and in early January in which we decided that if I could get on the transplant list I wouldn’t put it off. If I was called in for a transplant in the middle of an election I know I would be able to count on a great group of supporters because it is not just me, but the team. I know they would be gung ho to do whatever is necessary.” Olson said he already feels better as a result of his first islet transplant. “I can see huge benefit already after two weeks. My blood sugars are really stable, I have lost 10 or 15 pounds and I am taking less than half the insulin that

Telephone: (780)679-0822

I used to. I would like, if it is possible, to have another transplant, which might get me to the point where I wouldn’t have to take any insulin at all.”

Stage is set for Game 7 showdown By Murray Green

Six hockey games haven’t solved the question of which team will be representing the south in the Alberta Junior Hockey League finals. The Camrose Kodiaks garnered five straight tallies to defeat the Brooks Bandits 6-2 in the sixth game to even the series at three wins each, April 5. Spencer Kryczka notched three goals to set the pace for the Kodiaks. Dallas Bergstrom, Adam Wheeldon and Ryker Leer added single markers in Brooks. Goalie Devin McDonald stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced in the Camrose net. Brooks spoiled the Kodiaks’ chance of taking the lead in the series by having strong first and third periods in Camrose on April 3. The Bandits stole the show with a 5-3 victory. The visitors scored twice in the first and once in the third to gain the advantage. The Kodiaks scored all of their goals in the second with Kryczka collected two and Trevor Costello adding a single marker. McDonald had a rare off night by turning away 33 of 38 shots he faced. The Kodiaks scored four goals in the first period but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Brooks Bandits in the fourth game, March 31. The Bandits slowly stole the momentum away from Camrose and emerged with

a 5-4 victory in overtime to even the series at two games each. Scott Ferguson continued to provide the spark on offence with two goals. Single markers came from Braeden Salverda and Cam Gotaas to give the Kodiaks a 4-2 lead after the opening frame. Brooks fought back to tie the game in the second. When neither team scored in the third, overtime was needed to determine the winner. Shane Bear notched

the winner after just 41 seconds. McDonald was busy, especially after the opening period when Brooks out shot the Kodiaks 25-12. McDonald turned away 33 of 38 shots. Camrose directed 27 at the Brooks cage. Brooks had another strong second period on March 30 to win 4-2. Both teams scored in the first with Salverda garnering the tying marker. Brooks took the lead in the second

with two goals and then the teams were even in scoring in the last period, despite Camrose pouring on the pressure. Salverda netted his second of the night and the last Bandits goal was into an empty net. McDonald stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced. Both teams had 31 shots on goal. Bear facts

Game 7 will be on April 7 in Camrose with a 7 p.m. puck drop.

Season comes to an end for Augustana curlers The college curling nationals in Olds on March 25 to 28 ended the season for Augustana. The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference silver medal winning Augustana women’s team earned a berth to nationals and the men’s team went as a wild card after placing fourth in the ACAC. The women’s rink

sported a 4-3 record. The Vikings beat Mohawk 10-5, beat Olds 8-6, lost 6-5 to NAIT, beat Holland 6-4, beat MacEwan 8-6, lost 8-4 to Humber and lost 6-5 to Fanshawe. The top ACAC team, NAIT, received bronze medals. On the men’s side, the Vikings had a 3-4 record. They beat Red Deer 8-7,

beat Fanshawe 6-5, beat Fleming 6-3, lost 8-2 to Sault, lost 9-4 to Olds, lost 8-6 to MacEwan and lost 8-6 to NAIT to finish out of the playoff round. MacEwan, the top ACAC men’s team, earned bronze medals. Hockey The Augustana Vikings lost in two straight semifinal playoff

games against SAIT to place third in the ACAC. This marked the third straight year the Vikings have earned a bronze medal after capturing the league title in 2011-12. Defenceman Logan Sproule was named to the first team all-conference squad. Augustana forward Adam Johnson was selected to the second team.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson White Rabbit terror I really appreciated John Howard’s column about the White Rabbit a couple of weeks ago. For sure, he is not the only one who has the White Rabbit experience. In Alice in Wonderland, a character called The White Rabbit is always rushing around, checking his watch, saying, “I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!” John talked about his schedule – appointments bumping into appointments, and him rushing around saying, “I’m late I’m late I’m late!” When I read John’s column, I smiled in recognition, and then had two flashbacks. Flashback #1: The birthday party It is my 70th birthday party. My children announce that, in preparation for this milestone birthday, they have asked family members for comments about me. They read the comments. I don’t know who said which comment, except that all comments came from a family member. As I listen, I am touched by things people say they appreciate about me – many of them things that surprise me, and some things that feel familiar. I also notice a recurring theme – that I am often late. Not a surprise and also not comfortable to hear. The last comment can only have been written by one family member – my Mom. The comment is, “Bonnie is an achiever. She was born six days late and now she’s got it down to about half an hour most of the time.” Like everyone in the room, I laugh. And I remember being late for school in Grade 1. Flashback #2: Ride to the airport I am in a taxi, on the way from downtown Edmonton to the airport. I am running a tad late. I know it is not reasonable to expect the taxi driver to speed up, but I do mention to him the time that my plane will be boarding. The taxi driver quotes a friend who’s been known to say, “Your lack of organization does not constitute a crisis for me.” He mentions that if he exceeds the speed limit he could lose his license and therefore his livelihood. He assures me that he’ll get me to the airport as quickly as possible within the speed limit. I reflect on the choices I made, moment to moment, that led to “running a tad late” on the way to the airport. Doing “just one more thing” is a common theme. Then I remember that I want to do “just one more thing” because I’m running a tad late on a project. And that’s because I’ve been trying to squeeze “just one more thing” besides the project into my schedule. At that point, I ask myself a useful question: “What is the terror of an unstructured moment?” The irony does not escape me I’m writing this column about two days later than I wanted to have it sent to the Booster. It will arrive on time for them, and I’m glad. But my life would have been simpler this morning if I could have focussed on a different project that’s running a tad late. Here I am, writing about squeezing in just one more thing and running a tad late – for more than seventy years! That’s a pretty entrenched habit. A tougher question By now, I have a few answers to, “What is the terror of allowing an unstructured moment?” If you’re a person who tries to squeeze in “just one more thing” and sometimes runs “a tad late” you may have your own answers to that question. But now I have a different question: “Can a person who has a 70-year-old habit that does not serve her well, and that creates problems for others, change the habit?” I think that question might be right up there with, “Who am I?” and “What is the meaning of life?” I’ll keep you posted. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com.

Poetry workshop April 23 By Dan Jensen

Leading Canadian poet and University of Victoria writing department head chair Lorna Crozier will be conducting a residential poetry workshop at Down Home Bed and Breakfast (south and east of Camrose on Township Road 440) Thursday, April 23, to Sunday, April 26. Poets from beginners to advanced will spend three hours a day consulting with Crozier, learning new techniques and sharing their works with others. A supper reception will be held Thursday evening, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Crozier has been described as a person with small town manners, common sense and big city savvy who writes poetry that is witty, poignant and beautifully plain spoken with

startlingly clear moments of revelation that provide quick and deep glances into our very nature. Her first poem, written when she was a high school English teacher and guidance counsellor, was published in Grain magazine. She has taught creative writing at the Banff School of Fine Arts, the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts and the Sechelt Summer Writing Festival. She served as the writerin-residence at the Cypress Hills Community College in 1983, the Regina Public Library, and the University of Toronto in 1989. She has received a 1992 Governor General’s Award, the Canadian Author’s Association Award for Poetry, the National Magazine Award (gold medal), and first prize in the National CBC Literary Competition. She

received the University of Victoria’s Distinguished Professors Award and the University of Regina presented her with an honourary Doctorate of Law in 2004. The workshop is being presented by the Association for Life-Wide Living of Alberta Battle River Writing Centre. More information may be obtained by contacting Greg Zinter at 780-487-9334. Spaces are limited so early registration is advised. Crozier will also be presenting a public reading at Fridhem Historical Church at 7 p.m. April 24. The church may be found by travelling 30 minutes south of Camrose on Highway 21 to Ferintosh. At gravel pit corner turn east. You will find the church 3.5 miles down Range Road 440 on the south side of the road.

Federal government improves Advance Payments program Minister of State (Finance) and Member of Parliament (Crowfoot) Kevin Sorenson is highlighting major enhancements to the Advance Payments Program (APP) for farmers that will improve and streamline administration, provide greater flexibility and more repayment options, and ease access to the program. “These improvements to the APP are part of the coming into force of Bill C-18, the Agricultural Growth Act our Conservative Government recently passed in Parliament,” said Sorenson. “The Act modernizes and strengthens

federal agriculture legislation, supports innovation in the Canadian agriculture industry and enhances global market opportunities. Many of the changes implemented under the Act have taken effect on April 1, for the 2015 Program Year. I am most pleased that these improvements are in place in time to help producers plan for the new production year.” The APP is a federal loan guarantee program that helps agricultural producers benefit from the best market conditions by improving their cash flow throughout the year. Starting April 1, producers can

now request advances for all their commodities through one application with a single administrator, significantly reducing their paper burden. In addition, there is no longer a requirement for a farmer to be principally occupied in farming in order to utilize APP. Across Canada, more than $1.9 billion in advances has been provided to close to 21,000 producers for the 2014 program year to date. For a full list of improvements, visit the Advance Payments Program’s website: http://www.agr.gc.ca/ APP or call toll-free 1-866367-8506.

Working Well Workshop April 15, 2015 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Donalda, Alberta Lunch Provided

Consider how your life would change if you lost your water supply! Did you know that a poorly maintained water well can put your water supply at risk of contamination and reduce your well yield? If you are one of 450,000 Albertans who use their water well for household purposes, the key to ensuring your water supply is safe and secure is knowing how groundwater works, learning about your well and understanding how to properly maintain it. Proper water well siting, construction, maintenance and plugging will help protect your well from biofouling and contamination, save you costly repairs, and ensure your well water yields are sustained over many years.

Battle River School Division is offering

Early Learning Programs for children who are 3 or 4 years of age. These programs are facilitated by certified teachers and offer developmentally appropriate activities which will increase children’s confidence and Kindergarten readiness in preparation for success at school.

April Fool’s spoof… Special thanks to Dr. Chris Dinh for helping The Camrose Booster have a bit of fun with readers. The only thing correct in the March 31 Camrose Booster cover story on tooth brushing and excessive fluoride in the water was the photograph of a real, live practicing dentist. The ability for us to use Dr. Dihn’s photo gave the fictitious ‘fluoride in the water’ story significantly increased credibility. Based on verbal comments, texts and emails, the vast majority of Booster readers had trouble wrapping their heads around City Council considering a 90-day toothpaste ban for residents. Others knew the jig was up when they caught the name of the imaginary expert – April Phirst. The next clue for astute readers came upon reading the name of Ms. Phrist and the phony environmental company she supposedly owned with two partners: Phirst, Dey and Forth (the first day of the fourth month – April). If you didn’t catch on until you flipped over to page 2 of our publication and noticed the April Fool’s message, that’s still okay with us. We hope we lightened your day and that this phony story brought a smile to your face. Perhaps you smiled at yourself, too. We loved the email from one faithful Booster reader who admitted being highly skeptical of the front page piece but skipped using toothpaste on the morning of April 1 – just in case! We received three phone calls at our office from individuals expressing displeasure at this prank. Two felt this item, out of character for The Camrose Booster, was in poor taste and reading it caused them unnecessary anxiety. The third call came from the office of a medical office. This person also felt the April Fool’s joke was improper. We apologize to anyone who was offended. For the record, no one other than Booster staff and our dentist-friend were briefed on the April Fool’s lark prior to the Booster hitting the

streets mid-day on March 31st. It was at this point that we briefed the Mayor, Norman Mayer, and City Hall front-line staff. We appreciate that they found humour in our effort! Be assured, Camrose water is perfectly safe. The condition of our water is constantly monitored. Municipal water quality is highly regulated by the provincial government. Under no circumstances could spitting out water used for tooth brushing cause a water quality problem! One final thought for all Camrosians. Use the water that comes out of your tap for bathing, cooking, drinking and brushing, too! But please use it wisely. A clean, clear and safe water supply is one of our most precious resources and many of us (in this community, this province and this country) inadvertently take our water supply for granted. Whether it’s being used to nourish your lawn, for showers in the morning or for brushing your teeth, please use water sparingly. Have a great week and don’t forget to brush, floss and rinse! Three or four times a day would be wise just ask Dr. Dinh! Thanks for reading…

Cousin Harley ready to rock Bailey Theatre By Murray Green

Paul Pigat has been called a lot of names over the years. Two of those names have stuck. Dutch rock fans dubbed him the Motorhead of Rockability after witnessing his nonstop energy on stage. He also assumes his own identity in the Cousin Harley band when he wants to stray from his regular tunes and veer into his own direction of music wizardry. He will be emerging with Cousin Harley during his show on Friday, April 10, beginning at 8 p.m. Pigat is blessed with a jazz man’s sheen, a rockabilly heart and a hobo’s soul. He is able to play pretty much any music genre with great imagination. The unassuming Vancouver native has quietly compiled

a list of credits that would be the envy of anyone in the music business. He has performed in the background for The Sojourners, Jakob Dylan, Neko Case, Jim Byrnes and Carolyn Mark. Cousin Harley cranks up the energy so high that no one can resist his exhilarating hillbilly sound. “Cousin Harley’s been my main project for 12 or 13 years now and people think it’s easy to play rockabilly, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Everyone has to be on board from the first note or it just doesn’t work,” said Pigat on his website. Pigat has been nominated in the Rockabilly Male category in the 2015 Ameripolitan Music Awards. Tickets for Cousin Harley are available at the Bailey Box Office or online.

The Rose City Roots Music Society added Colleen Rennison, of No Sinner fame, to the line-up of its concert series to offer her solo work to local music fans. She will be appearing on Thursday, April 9 at 8 p.m. at the Bailey Theatre. Rennison’s band was known for its hard hitting rock and roll sound, but her solo work has more of a county-folk sound that reaches more fans in western Canada. “When you are in a band it is a collaboration of people working to a common sound. I wanted to have a solo album that was a branch of my own sound,” she explained on her move towards Canadian folk music. “The solo project (released last July) gave me a chance to explore my own direction.” Rennison (which backwards spells No Sinner, the name of the rock band) has also put her acting career on the back-burner as she moves towards a busy schedule in the music industry. She played minor roles alongside some of the famous actors and actresses in Hollywood, including Bruce Willis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathleen Turner, Minnie Driver, Tom Arnold, Ray Liotta and Hilary Duff. Rob Reiner and Sally Field were two of her directors. Rennison even won a Gemini award at the age of 13. However, even with her success, she longed for the musical stage. “I think a solo album was always coming. It is another side of me. It’s a personal side of me that needed to be shared. There are many different shades to an artist and sometimes you get pigeonholed. I’m so much more than that and what people see on stage,” she shared. “My solo work is lighter and easier to listen to. I wanted to focus on the Canadian-American songbook that was in the background for everyone. It has that North American feel. It’s a struggle to go in a direction that you don’t really know.” Last year, she headed into the direction of more solo work. “I have had more radio play and so far it is rewarding,” she said. “The song ‘Whiskey, Whiskey’ is my favorite because it is the kind of song you can put on at any given moment and no matter what you are doing with anybody, it always fits the mood.” Rennison has heard good things about the 100-year Bailey theatre. “I’m excited to come to Camrose and play some music at the Bailey,” she said. “I’m looking forward to sharing my songs.”

Sing Yuen Kim Mah was born in Hoi Sun Bak Sa (known as Baisha today) in the Taishan, Guangdong province of China in 1928. He was the adopted son of Mah York and Wong You Gam. At the age of 21, he married Woo Guey Gee in China. Their first child Mei Lai was born in China in 1949. The family moved to Hong Kong in 1951 following the communist takeover of China. Sing worked as a barber in Hong Kong. Their second daughter Mei Sui was born in 1952. Sing and Gee had seven more children in Camrose, AB from 1956 to 1970. On April 6, 1952, Sing emigrated to Camrose to join his father Mah York. York, one of many immigrants who worked on building the Canadian Pacific Railway and who owned the York Café. Sing worked with his father until 1955 and became part owner in 1957. Together with his cousin Don Wing, he opened another café, the Jubilee Lunch in 1960, later to be owned by Don. By 1964, Sing sold his interests in the York Café and became sole owner of the Rose Grill Café until his retirement in 1988. Sing and his chief cook, Tony Mah, were great chefs, known for their delicious Chinese food, in particular, sweet and sour spareribs, as well as homemade pies and soups. Sing loved to cook and would host many banquets for his family and friends throughout the years. Chevy Trax An entry to SUV market

Graeme Davidson By Dan Jensen

The 2015 Chevy Trax at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC offers versatility, connectivity and turbocharged performance in an efficient package. Sporty and modern, Trax blends small-car agility with the utility of an SUV, including up to 1,371 litres of cargo room. “Trax offers customers another option in the Chevrolet family and will be a strong competitor in the emerging small-SUV market, which is expected to grow more than 80 per cent by 2016,” said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer principal Will McClellan. A Chevy inside and out

With its signature dual port grille, prominent bowtie emblem and swept headlamps, the Trax is immediately identifiable as a contemporary Chevrolet. Its grille design – with chrome accents – emulates other Chevrolets and provides a more cohesive appearance across the brand’s lineup of crossovers and small cars. Available cues such as front fog lamps and simulated front and rear skid plates

lend a sportier presence, while vertical tail lamps flank the tailgate, accenting taught body lines and pronounced wheel arches that give the Trax a more confident stance. The ten exterior colours are Brilliant Blue Metallic, Orange Rock Metallic, Satin Steel Metallic, White Pearl Tricoat, Black Granite Metallic, Summit White, Silver Ice Metallic, Ruby Red Metallic, Deep Espresso Metallic and Blaze Red. Inside. Traxs’ distinctive styling carries over to a dualcockpit instrument panel. In the centre, it houses a seven-inch high-resolution, full-colour display for the standard MyLink voice-activated infotainment system. It also features displays for available SIRIUSXM satellite radio and standard rearview camera, as well as the available GPS-enabled app navigation system that customers can download. The instrument panel is inspired by the bold design in the Sonic, featuring a large performance-style analogue tachometer combined with a prominent digital display for the speedometer and other readouts. A small-diameter,

thick-rimmed steering wheel enhances the sporty ambience. The wheel is leather wrapped on LTZ and some LT models. LS models feature standard cloth seating with deluxe cloth standard on LT, along with an available cloth/ leatherette seating trim. LTZ models feature standard full leatherette trim. Interior colours are Jet Black Jety Black/Light Titanium, and Jet Black/Brownstone. For versatility, the 60/40 flat-folding rear seat features a fold-down armrest with cup holders, storage in all four doors, four bins in the dash, pockets in the seatbacks and bins under the rear load floor and in a hidden storage drawer under the front passenger seat. It also offers 540 litres of storage behind the split-foldingrear seat and 1,371 litres with the rear seat folded. The front passenger seat also folds flat to extend the cargo length and accommodate items up to eight feet long. Connectivity

Available Siri Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users enhances connectivity and convenience. Each enables voice-controlled con-

nectivity so customers can keep phones stored and their hands on the wheel. Additional standard and/or available features include a diagonal colour touch screen and additional USB ports, Chevrolet connected by OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi, next-generation OnStar and MyLink, SIRIUSXM Satellite Radio (with three months of trial service), and playback of MP3 files stored on USB flash memory drive. With Chevrolet’s connected by OnStar 4G LLTE connection, Trax provides an available Wi-Fi hotspot that allows passengers to connect multiple personal devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to high speed wireless Internet.

crankshaft centreline, making the entire powertrain unit shorter fore-to-aft. This design enables a shorter overall vehicle length, increased interior space, enhanced safety crush zones, and lower weight. A “steep” first gear and a “tall” overdrive top gear achieve a wide ratio spread of 6:14:1. This allows Trax to achieve robust acceleration as well as fuel efficiency and lower engine noise at highway cruising speeds. The turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility. A solid cast crankshaft and forged connecting rods deliver additional durability to support the engine’s pressurized power and torque.

Trax is powered by a power-dense Ecotec 1.4 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine backed by an efficiency-enhancing six-speed automatic transmission that produces 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm. The transmission has a unique design with the planetary gearsets positioned on the same axis and the engine

Trax isi s built on a robust global platform and engineered with precise suspension tuning to deliver one of the segment’s quietest and most refined driving experiences. You can see the new 2015 Trax at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 3850-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

SOUP AND SANDWICH LUNCHEON – St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 4713-50 St., April 17, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., $9/person.

PETS/PET SUPPLIES

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Privately operated seniors’ facilities make significant investments into continuing care operations and should be allowed to have a return on investments says the Alberta Senior Citizens’ Housing Association. Responding to questions by Public Interest Alberta about the profit margins of privately owned facilities, ASCHA said in a March 24 release that contracted service providers which receive grant funding from the Alberta Affordable Supportive Living Initiative (ASLI) must meet the same standards as non-profit or faith based facilities. “They (private operators) offer operational efficiency and creativity that leads to a sustainable industry, said the release. “All ASLI applications include budgets which may not reflect reality and will not include all expenses like building amortization, or mortgage principle repayment. ASCHA executive director Irene MartinLindsay believes that continuing care operations, whether they be home care, supportive living or long term care, need to be funded equitably and sufficiently across the province to ensure Albertans receive excellent housing and care when they need it. “Regardless of ownership structure there needs to be a shift in our focus to support innovative strategy aimed at improving the quality and accessibility of housing, services and care received by seniors and persons with disabilities, MartinLindsay said.

Alberta Continuing Care Association CEO Tammy Leach feels Alberta needs to re-balance the continuing care sector, which is funded 19 per cent less than the national average. “The continuing care sector in Alberta has long been neglected, said Leach. The Health Quality Council of Alberta released two reports in January of this year entitled Supportive Living Residents and Family Experience which indicated that facility own-

ership (Alberta Health Services or a private or voluntary organization), did not have any influence on resident and family experiences. City council has approved a $5,000 sponsorship of the Alberta Francophone Games that will be coming to Camrose in May. The funds will be allocated from the Community Grants and Support – Community Events account. The Alberta Francophone Games are expected to draw approximately 400 athletes and their entourages and generate approximately $40,000 in spending on everything from catering and the production of t-shirts to medal purchases and hotel bookings. “The host community is at the heart of the Games and we value the involvement of the Camrose community by giving back,” said Federation du sport francophone de l’Alberta (FSFA) directrice generale Monique Witzell in a presentation to council last October. “Our intent is to work with local companies to make this event a success while supporting the local economy.” Continued on page 31

Nanton Palominos edge Northstars in men’s final By Murray Green

The Daysland Northstars senior men’s double-A hockey team collected silver medals after a tough 6-5 loss to Nanton in the provincial final in Camrose on March 29. The four time former Battle River Hockey League champions built up a 2-0 lead in the first after David Jacobsen and Cameron Dion scored. Nanton cut the lead in half before the period ended. In the second frame, Dayne Sorensen gave the Northstars a 3-1 lead but the momentum soon changed as the Palominos scored three straight prior to the break. Daysland fought back with two early tallies in the

third by Brad Trautman and Dean Prpick. Nanton responded with two more including the winner with 1:37 left on the clock. The Northstars advanced to the final with a 6-3 victory over the Elk Point Elks. Justin Trautman scored twice and single markers came from Brad Trautman, Sorensen, Dion and Greg Doll. Daysland beat Westlock 4-3 in the opening game for the Northstars. Trevor Bromby, Brad Trautman, Dion and Prpick notched tallies for the host team. The Battle River Hockey League champions from Bonnyville earned bronze medals with a 6-1 win over Westlock.

Francophone Games coming to Camrose May 22 to 24 Continued from page 28 The Games athletes will attend opening ceremonies on the evening of May 22 and be able to enjoy an evening of culture before heading to their temporary home at the Camrose Composite High School, where they will prepare for two days of competition in soccer, men’s and women’s volleyball, badminton, ball hockey, three on three basketball, and men’s and women’s cross-country running at various city venues. The FSFA had originally asked that the City of Camrose provide $20,000 in cash and in-kind support in exchange for naming rights (Alberta Francophone Games presented by the City of Camrose), the City logo on posters, the City logo on the back of the official event t-shirt worn by all athletes and volunteers at the Games, and a tent and tables for City promotion at the arrival of the athletes. “Though less than the requested amount, the recommended sponsorship amount of $ 5,000 has been discussed with the games organizers and they are pleased that the cost of City facility rentals would be offset by the proposed amount,” said a report presented to council by Community Services general manager Paul Nielsen March 16. The level of support falls in line with support granted to other events that have come to Camrose and the exposure that those events have generated. The Games will require approximately 100 volunteers to assist with everything from running the cafeteria and timing the events to coordinating the transportation. “We feel (the Games) will create a sense of solidarity and pride amongst local volunteers, knowing they are part of a great event that is showcasing Camrose as a community that supports the francophone community,” said Witzell. “The Games will create strong community networks between the francophone community and the Camrose community at large.” Camrose is home to more than 200 francophones (mother tongue). The Cercle Local of Camrose Battle River, which was incorporated in 2013, has worked to strengthen the francophone community of the region, while the French immersion program has been extended to the high school level with students from the first cohort who commenced the program in 2004.
