Armena 4-H Beef Club holds successful mini show

Armena 4-H Beef Club members had lots of fun at our 4-H Mini Club Show on April 26. Our mini show took place at the Hay Lakes Ag multi use building.

We did lots of things, including having to set up and take down stalls in the arena. Prep for the show included washing and drying the animals, clipping and grooming.

Darian Livingstone gave the grooming and showmanship demonstration.

The mini show was great and all of our 4-H members had lots of fun preparing the animals for the show and showing the animals in the ring. Judge David Salmon and ringman James Selin helped make our day a success. The winner of the grand champion steer competition was Kaden Tritten with his steer Itchy.

The winner of the reserve champion steer competition was Hannah Resch with her steer Sheldon. The winner of the grand champion female was Ashley Ganske with her cow Ebony, and the winner of the reserve champion female was Ty Hilgartner with his heifer Rose.

The winner of the showmanship competition was Ashley Ganske.

The second place winner was Hannah Resch.

Armena 4-H Beef Club expressed appreciation to everyone who came out to the show and showed their support. The club was also appreciative of the help of Brenden Hilgartner and Christian Ford, who were the night watchmen and helped to get the animals show ready.

Josh Lyseng and Alex Clennett helped make halters and neck ties.

The silent auction for our 4-H horse club raised $1,431.

Meridian Manufacturing refinished our grooming chutes.

Hope you can come out and join us at our inter club show and sale on June 2 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition.

Truck checks keep roads safe in County

The Camrose County Truck Inspection at the east side Wildrose Co-op card lock was a success despite the strong winds and snowy conditions, April 1, 2 and 9.

“Camrose County would like to thank those farmers who still participated in our annual farm truck inspection,” said officer Manie Germushuysen, of County Protective Services.

Camrose County joined forces with a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement crew to inspect 38 farm trucks.

Of those 38, 12 trucks were found to have defects that would place them out of service. If stopped on a highway, those same trucks could easily have been towed and the drivers ticketed. Nine trucks required attention and 17 trucks passed the inspection.

“Because this is a free farm truck check, no vehicles are towed and no tickets are issued. Camrose County would like to encourage farmers to take advantage of this inspection program in order to avoid any on-highway problems,” added officer Germushuysen Inspections included critical safety items such as brakes, steering, lights, frames, fuel systems and drive shafts.

Camrose Cargill Animal Nutrition, Camrose Wildrose Co-op and Richardson Pioneer donated prizes that were won by Mark Hillaby, Weyga Farms, Baumle Farms, Blaine Fenske, Larry Young, Roger Gabert, Fred Evenson, Cal Flemming and Helmut Dierks.

Alan Doutre, Gurpreet Bajwa, Todd Thompson, Sgt. Dan de Melo from Justice and Solicitor General Commercial Vehicle Enforcement assisted the Camrose County peace officer. Wildrose Co-op allowed Camrose County to utilize its card lock parking area and provided refreshments during the inspection.”

Camrose County and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement performs truck inspections on an annual basis, usually near the end of March or the beginning April.

An Alberta-based group showcased innovative ways to create energy from woody biomass on Earth Day (April 22) by touring facilities in Whitecourt and Camrose where bioenergy solutions are currently in use.

The group, known as the Alberta Rural Organic Waste to Resources Network or AROWRN, is a network of communities, researchers, other organizations and industrial interests that works to convert organic waste into resources and share its knowledge with others who are interested in this approach.

The theme for this year’s field day was “Fast-growing woody biomass in the energy production chain.” AROWRN’s goal is to connect the links in Alberta’s fast-growing woody biomass to the province’s energy production chain. The daylong tour, which started and finished in Edmonton, focused on growing the crop, environmental services and various enduses for this biomass.

Camrose County’s boiler and chip system was viewed and examined by many guests. “When we started the project the price of natural gas was going higher and there was no way of knowing were it was going to stop. Well we know where it stopped (prices went down). We had a lot of challenges along the way, but we feel it was worth it,” said County reeve Don Gregorwich.

The cost, not counting labour, was about $188,000 in 2008. Today, the cost would be double.

“We tried wood dust, but it didn’t work because there was glue in it. We then used wood pallets. However, they had aluminum nails that were not detected by magnets,” said County administrator Paul King. “We had to switch to clean burning willow chips. This is the first spring we haven’t had any problems.”

Heating from willow wood has proven to be more efficient. “Many people would be surprised to learn municipalities and provinces such as Alberta are already investing in technologies that use woody biomass as a feedstock,” said Don Harfield, thermochemical processing team leader at Alberta Innovates Technologies Future. “Instead of treating woody biomass as waste, the material can be used to produce higher-value products like composite fibre products, biofuels and biochar. It’s an abundant and readily available natural energy source that is currently under-valued and underused in Alberta and many other parts of Canada.”

The Willow Harvesting and Combustion Field Day event was an all-day tour that started at the Canadian Forestry Centre in Edmonton, visited the Whitecourt Willow Plantation to observe the harvesting of willow after their recent three year growing cycle and then travelled to Camrose County for presentations and a walkabout of woody biomass combustion system, which provides supplemental heat to the County offices.

“What I’ve seen today in Camrose is a wonderful method of using and applying wood in a very practical way,” said Harfield.

This tour was viewed as a great way to communicate the benefits of woody biomass to a focused audience interested in employing practical environmental technologies and to celebrate Earth Day. “The goal was to connect the links in Alberta’s fastgrowing woody biomass to the province’s energy production chain. I find that many people would be surprised to learn that municipalities (such as Camrose County and Strathcona County) in Alberta are already investing in technologies that utilize woody biomass to provide heat energy into their municipal buildings,” said Harfield.

He reinforced that the visionary leadership at Camrose County is remarkable and that its dedication to utilize the willow from the Ohaton plantation is an example of how we can utilize environmentally sustainable and renewable resources to complement our efficient use of energy from fossil fuels to the benefit of the local community.

“It is one of the best examples in Alberta of using wood in providing heat in practical applications,” Harfield explained.

Spreading the knowledge that this woody biomass can also be used to produce higher-value products like composite fibre products, biofuels and biochar is important.

“Biochar in particular is a wonderful soil amendment and a hydroponic greenhouse substrate, which is produced from woody biomass through a simple process called slow pyrolysis, which heats up the wood in the absence of oxygen,” said Harfield. “This is a way of using our resources wisely. For Camrose, this is a win-win situation.”

Using lagoon water to water the willows prevents sewage from going into water systems. Harfield leads a team of scientific and engineering specialists (in Vegreville), which focuses on underutilized or waste materials, including woody biomass. Some specialty applications for the carbon based products include activated carbons and modified biochars, which are remarkably beneficial as filtration media, including the removal of toxic compounds from oil industry waters such as oil sands tailings ponds.

(1) (a) Prior to July 15, in any year, only the owner of land abutting the ditch of a public highway under the jurisdiction of Camrose County is authorized to harvest by cutting, baling, or any other method, any forage crop that grows within the said ditches of the said public highway. Victim Services assists people

Camrose Victim Services assists the Camrose Police Service and the Camrose RCMP detachment in helping people deal with the aftermath of trauma.

Victim Services members Dan Hertel, Kim Telford and Michelle Hauser (with dog Lucy) updated Camrose County on how volunteers assist victims on April 28.

“We wanted to explain how busy we are in the county. We had 400 calls into our office last year,” said Hauser.

“About a quarter of them are RCMP calls. Our violent calls are up from the RCMP and increasing, as is theft. Bashaw is short of advocates right now, so we are helping them as well. We also share Lucy.”

Normally, Camrose covers up to the Edberg and Ferintosh area and Bashaw handles the southern part of the county. “All of our advocates are volunteers, so we wanted to give the government an idea of what their traveling distances actually are,” said Hauser. “We wanted to show the time they spent on the road and that doesn’t include gravel roads.

Council was happy with the service the group provides.

“It seems that the advocates are very special people,” said Reeve Don Gregorwich. “They receive very little recognition, not that they are looking for it, but they are pretty special.”

Camrose Victim Services caters to their advocates to help educate and support them. “We received a grant to answer court calls in the district. Sometimes people don’t want our help right away, but then six months down the road they want our support in court, or to be kept up-todate,” said Hauser. “We have had higher numbers of children in court, which is more than usual.”

Camrose Victim Services assists with victims of crime as they recover from an incident or attempt to gain some restitution.

“A lot of people don’t know about the service we provide until they are a victim, or in a crisis,” explained Hertel.

“We don’t do as much front line awareness that we would like to because advocates don’t want to be labelled as providing these services either for fear that there might be retribution as well. I witnessed an advocate in action and that is how I first heard about it. We can’t recognize our advocates enough for what they do.”

Councillor Doug Lyseng asked when do the advocates become involved.

“A lot of times it is a given that we respond to a crisis like a death. We become involved at the crisis and we assist unless someone tells us they don’t want our services or support,” said Hauser. “Lucy goes on every call with us. If they say she is fine to come in, she does. She also appears in court as comfort for victims.”

Lucy has received national and international attention for her work in comforting people.

“I’ve seen Lucy in action and without saying anything, she put her paw on someone who was having a difficult time at a meeting,” said Telford. “She just knew.”

Hertel said the dogs help with the natural healing.

Lyseng also asked about advocate burn out. “We are very careful not to have burn out. We rotate the advocates and try to give them some time off. It doesn’t always work like that,” said Hauser.

“We are always looking for more advocates to give them time off. We have some advocates that have been with us for 12 years.”

Man sleeping in Lexus charged with theft May 4 An individual working in the area of Township Road 473 and Range Road 201 discovered registration and an owner’s manual for a 2015 Lexus.

Other belongings were seen scattered about on the side of the road. The vehicle was determined to be stolen out of Strathcona County. Later in the day, Killam RCMP received a call about a suspicious person sleeping in a vehicle.

The vehicle was the stolen Lexus and the individual was arrested and charged.

This matter is still under investigation.

A report was received about an individual who tried to purchase some Calgary Flames tickets off of Kijiji and failed to receive the tickets. Money was sent via e-transfer.

While on patrol, an officer was given an envelope filled with identification and credit cards that had been found. Upon contacting the owner, it was confirmed that the individual’s truck had been broken into in February in Edmonton.

May 5 RCMP attended a property near Highway 26 as there was a report of stolen property. The owner reported his farm shop had been broken into and tools stolen. A red 2005 Dodge Ram 4x4 had been seen on the property. The vehicle was located later in the day near Township Road 472 and the stolen property was recovered. This matter is still under investigation.

May 6 An individual attended front counter to turn in some identification she found on the road. The owner was contacted and the property returned.

May 7 Police received a call regarding a two vehicle collision on Highway 21 north of Hay Lakes. The complainant was pulling into her driveway when she was sideswiped by a silver Chevrolet truck heading south. The vehicle did not stop for the accident.

No driver description or licence plate was obtained.

This matter is still under investigation.

May 8 A call was received about two vehicles that were stopped at Highway 21 and Highway 13.

May 9 RCMP responded to a complaint of a dirt bike crossing private property in the area of Range Road 215 north of Hay Lakes.

The complainant was able to motion to the driver of the dirt bike to stay off

the property. Threats were made. This matter is still under investigation.

May 11 RCMP responded to three calls in the area of Range Road 205 and Township Road 482 for four stolen vehicles. Two of the vehicles have been recovered, but a green Chevrolet GMT400 and Grey 1997 GMC Sierra are still missing.

RCMP also responded to (two) 911 hang up calls, (three) false alarms and (eight) reports of dangerous drivers.
