The coalition conducted a survey on active transportation with the results being loud and clear: more people would bike if there were more bike racks! In an effort to reduce barriers to active transportation, the coalition obtained grant funding and purchased four additional bike racks. The City of Camrose has partnered to provide the installation and maintenance on these. The new bike rack locations are at Stoney Creek Centre (pictured here), Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, the Gateway Centre and Jubilee Park (to be installed upon completion of construction). BRSD welcomes announcement on education funding By Dan Jensen
Back in April after the Progressive Conservative government announced its budget, Battle River School Division trustees were wondering how they were going to address a projected $1.7 million funding shortfall and come up with the funds to cover the costs of adding more than 100 new students to the classroom this September. They don't have to wonder any more. The newly-elected NDP government made good last week on one of the promises it made during the recent election campaign by announcing it will be restoring the funding school divisions need to pay non-teaching staff (educational assistants, librarians, administrative assistants, family school liaison workers, bus drivers, maintenance staff), purchase materials and supplies and operate buses, as well as funding new students coming into the schools in 2015-16. "This news is a great relief to us," said Battle River School Division superintendent Rita Marler. "Battle River School Division is grateful to the Government of Alberta for making education a priority." BRSD trustees' plan to offset service reductions to vulnerable students such as those for whom English is a second language and those in need of additional health or education supports was to dig into reserves, even though the previous government discouraged that. They will be now working with BRSD administration to review the budget that had previously been prepared and determining what areas need to be adjusted. "I don't think anyone minds doing the work required," said Marler. "We are happy to make it happen." Trustees were worried about what the reduction in money for transportation, combined with the four per cent increase in the fuel tax, would mean for the 4,000 students who are bused to and from school each day. "It appears that transportation grants are not being reduced as much as some other areas," said BRSD board chair Kendall Severson in April, "but adding a four per cent tax at the pump means that the cost of running a school bus just went up, while the grant went down." BRSD and other school boards were told by the previous government that no new provincial funding would be available for the next three years, despite Alberta's soaring enrolments. Continued on page 9
MESSAGE FOR THE GRADS

Number of traffic collisions increased in 2014 By Dan Jensen
The number of vehicle collisions increased by 35 last year to 756 according to the Camrose Police Service 2014 traffic analysis. Forty-one of the collisions involved injuries, down from 48 in 2013, while 599 resulted in property damage over $2,000, up from 557 in 2013. "Strategies such as enforcement, roving patrols, CheckStops and the Curb the Danger Program are presently in place as deterrents to reduce these type of collisions," said Const. Adam Belanger, traffic unit. One hundred and seven collisions involved property damage under $2,000, one more than in 2013. The total number of on-highway collisions in 2014 was 482, an increase of 16 from 2013. On highway collisions that resulted in injury totalled 46, while on highway collisions that resulted in property damage over $2,000 totalled 256. Hit and run collisions
and collisions involving pedestrians numbered 178 and six respectively. The number of bicycle collisions was four, the same as in 2013. "In 2012 a bicycle safety program was implemented by the school resource officer, crime prevention officer and traffic member to educate young cyclists on rules of the road and traffic safety tips," said Const. Belanger. "This program has continued to be offered in various Camrose schools with a classroom setting. The Camrose Police Service was also a partner in the Public Health Bicycle Safety Rodeo and played an active role in educating young riders with bicycle safety rules." Who is involved One hundred and thirteen of the collisions involved drivers between the ages of 21 and 30, 94 between the ages of 31 and 40, 91 between the ages of 41 and 50, 85 between the ages of 51 and 60, 75 between the ages of 61 and 70, 46 between the ages of 71 and
80, 45 between the ages of 14 and 17, 38 between the ages of 18 and 20, and 31 over the age of 80. December was the busiest month for collisions with 74, followed by April at 71, January at 70 and November at 66. The busiest day of the week was Friday with 135 collisions, followed by Thursday with 130 and Wednesday with 105. "This is reflective of the previous years," said officer Belanger. "Sunday has been the day that has consistently had the least amount of collisions reported for the last five years." The hour in which collisions were more likely to occur was between 2 and 3 p.m. Reasons One hundred and fifty four of the collisions were caused by unsafe backing, 102 by turn violations, 53 by speed, 48 by lane violations and 47 by following too close. "A look at the last five year span shows that collisions resulting from back-
ing up unsafely have continued to be the primary cause of reported collisions," said Const. Belanger. "Turning violations have been the second primary cause for collisions in the past three years. Speed, along with road sign, lane violations and following too close are also noted to be consistent contributing causes. Non criminal traffic offences increased by six per cent, with the number of parking violations going from 52 to 88. "From 2012 to 2013 parking enforcement decreased by 41 per cent and last year it increased by the same margin," he said. Criminal traffic offences decreased by a total of 38 per cent to 130 in 2014, with 57 of those due to impaired driving. "The education and implementation of the Impaired Driving legislation has been working to decrease the number of impaired drivers on our streets," said Belanger. "Camrose Police Service
actively targets impaired drivers through roving patrols, CheckStops and by responding to complaints that are received." Forty-four of the drivers charged with being intoxicated were male and eight were female. Camrose Police Service checked 6,587 vehicles during 46 CheckStops. "The CheckStop program is aimed at educating the driving public of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving," said Const. Belanger. "The intent of the program is to deter and change public attitude towards drinking and driving through other mediums than convictions. The vast majority of the public provides positive reactions to the CheckStop program." Road and weather Road conditions were noted to be a factor in 39 per cent of the collisions in 2014, while weather conditions were a factor in eight per cent. Continued on page 6

Increase in traffic collisions Continued from page 4
The 68 Street and 48 Avenue intersection had the most collisions at 19, followed by the 39 Street and 48 Avenue intersection at 11, the Grand Drive and 48 Avenue intersection at 10 and the 66 and 48 Avenue intersection at eight. “In 2014 there were 136 collisions at intersections as compared to 131 in 2013, which is an increase of four per cent,” he said. “This slight increase can be attributed to a growing city with more vehicles, road construction and poor driving habits. Provincially, the three main causes for collisions at intersections are unsafe left turn across the path of an oncoming vehicle, stop sign violations or disobeying traffic control devices. Through additional patrols during high impact intersections, these types of collisions can be prevented.” Education important Belanger believes that by educating people on the consequences that may occur from not abiding by the traffic laws people can be persuaded to change their driving behaviour.
“The need for education applies to everyone, including those of the enforcement community,” he said. “Just as members of the general public need to understand that speeding increases the risk of being involved in a collision, the members of the enforcement community, especially those who are starting their careers, have to understand the need to enforce the speed limits and to complete a full investigation into any collision that may occur.” Goals for 2015 Camrose Police Service will continue its efforts with the Curb the Danger and Photo Radar programs in 2015. “Photo radar enforcement within the community of Camrose has proven to be a very successful tool in reducing vehicle speed,” said Const. Belanger. “Photo radar will continue to operate in school zones to assist our youth in safely traveling to and from school.” Camrose Police Service, as a partner in the Alberta Occupant Restraint Program, will
again be targeting those who choose not to buckle up. “The Provincial Selective Traffic Enforcement Program identifies March and October as occupant restraint months,” he said. “Seatbelt safety stops will be targeted specifically in these months.” Camrose Police Service will be tracking the number of distracted driving violation tickets and using the reports to better educate the public on the dangers of distracted driving. “Research indicates that driver distraction contributes to 20 to 30 per cent of all collisions and distracted drivers are three times more likely to be involved in a collision than attentive drivers,” said officer Belanger. “Alberta’s new distracted driving law came into effect in 2011. Our Service will continue to enforce this legislation heavily in 2015 by educating the public and reducing the number of preventable collisions caused by distracted drivers that occur within our city.”

Citing poor diesel reliability and ever increasing diesel repair costs associated with todays’ sophisticated diesel engines, the Hays are excited to move towards new technology that is cleaner for the environment, offers greater reliability, lower maintenance costs, is quieter for the driver and warmer for the children in winter. These new propane buses are easily recognized by their clean air badging.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson A multi-billionaire’s secret Last week I watched an interview with Richard Branson, the man who founded Virgin Airlines and many other businesses. He’s been one of my heroes for a while. I first heard about him because he was attempting to go around the world in a hot air balloon, which attracted a lot of publicity. Then I learned he is a selfmade multi-billionaire, which also tends to attract publicity. What made him one of my heroes is that, while having such an extraordinary life, he has maintained healthy affectionate family relationships with his wife of more than 30 years and their adult children. He has contributed hugely to many philanthropic endeavours. He does not just contribute money to causes that interest him, he contributes talent, expertise and connections to causes that can change the world. An adventurous life Branson has had an adventurous life. He’s launched many businesses. He has crossed the Atlantic and Pacific in a hot air balloon, and was within one day away of beating the world record for going around the world in a hot air balloon. He is famously working on a project that will enable ordinary civilians, not just astronauts, to travel in space. During the interview, he exuded joyous vitality. He talked of some of the struggles and challenges he’s had, but even then, he was clearly having fun. He builds fun into every day. His number one secret Towards the end of the interview, the interviewer asked, “What’s your number one secret to success?” Branson said, “Look for the best in other people.” He went on to say, “There is always something special you can find in people. Find things to praise. And as a leader, it’s even more important to be out there, encouraging, inspiring and praising.” He also said, “Hopefully you never have a falling out with anyone. But if you do…” He went on to say that if you do have a falling out with someone, even someone you believe has done you harm, it’s important to find a way to mend fences. He told the story of his relationship with the Chair of British Airways. Even British Airways British Airways was a giant that dominated the UK market. Virgin Airlines was a tiny start-up, struggling to survive. When Virgin Airlines first began, British Airways did many things to put Virgin Airlines out of business – not just nasty things like predatory pricing, but sometimes unethical things like snooping in Virgin’s garbage, starting untrue rumours about Virgin Airlines, and other ugly tactics. Virgin Airlines survived, sued British Airways and won the lawsuit. British Airways had to pay $500 million in damages. Sometime after that, Branson audaciously invited the Chair of British Airways out for lunch. The Chair was suspicious, wondering about Branson’s motivation, but eventually accepted the invitation. During the lunch, Branson suggested that they set up a charity together. They did. Over the years, Branson and the Chair of British Airways became personal friends. Get past the past “Get past the past,” was Branson’s message. As an example, he said he was fortunate to know Bishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela in South Africa. At the end of apartheid, rather than seek out and punish those who had so viciously oppressed them, Tutu and Mandela set up the Truth and Reconciliation process in which former oppressors acknowledged what they had done and were forgiven. Rather than a bloodbath (which was distinctly possible), through the Truth and Reconciliation process, Tutu and Mandela managed to move their country ahead. “Get past the past,” Branson said again. “People will be suspicious,” he said, “and wonder what’s the axe you have to grind,” but you need to get past the past. Stoney Creek Lodge In reference to an article in the Booster dated May 12 regarding Stoney Creek Lodge closing. The Stoney Creek Lodge was built in 1960 and renovated in 1992. It could be home to 60 seniors. In March, 2013, residents in the north wing were told they’d have to move to
the other rooms as sprinklers were being installed. Then central wing was moved due to sprinklers being installed. To this day, sprinkers were never installed. Stoney Creek Lodge received a government grant for sprinklers. On April 13, 2015, residents were told at a residents’ council meeting that the lodge would be closing permanently at the end of May. On April 21, residents were told that you, you and you pack your boxes, the movers are coming on April 23 and 24 to move them to Bashaw Lodge. An incentive was given to these residents of free rent until the completion of the Rosealta addition. This left four residents remaining. On April 23, two of those residents were told where they would be placed and not to tell anyone. On April 24, the remaining two were told one was going to
Rosealta and one to Deer Meadows. Their incentive was rent, meals, laundry to remain the same as Stoney Creek Lodge. The numbers have declined at Stoney Creek Lodge because no new applications have been accepted since March, 2013. Why was this closure not done in conjunction with the opening of the Rosealta addition? According to the Landlord and Tenants Act, a tenant must be given three months of written notice but this does not apply to lodges. These residents were given two days of notice. Our seniors were not treated properly. They were uprooted several times in a short span. This is elder abuse and shame, shame on those people responsible for this closure. Lorraine Oslanski, Camrose

Funding increase welcome news for school division Continued from page 4 “The previous government cut the amount of funding available to be spent on each student,” said CUPE Alberta president Marle Roberts. “This would have meant increased class sizes, more portable classrooms, program and staff cuts, less money on maintenance and student support – it would have been a disaster for students, for the learning environment, and for Alberta’s investment in our future.” Alberta Teachers’ Association president Mark Ramsankar said improved funding for student enrolment growth is a welcome first step in better resourcing schools in the province. “I’m encouraged by the fact that decisive action has been taken to ensure that school boards will have funding to support enrolment growth in schools. The government is projecting that 12,000 more students will be added to classrooms next year and Albertans made it clear in the election that those students must be funded.” Minister of Education David Eggen said by funding enrolment growth and restoring funding for transportation, inclusive education, First Nations, Metis and Inuit among other areas, the NDP government is helping to ensure that school authorities can make decisions that are in the best interest of the students in their communities. The fiscal cost to restore funding is $103 million. School board budgets for the 2015-16 school year are due to Alberta Education by June 30.

The 26th annual Leduc to Camrose MS Bike Tour will be cruising through our city June 13 and 14. Cyclists raise money to help fight MS while enjoying the ride to Camrose on the first day. It is one of Canada’s largest MS Bike events.
Participants then return to Leduc the next morning. The tour begins in Nisku (Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers site) and spans 83 kilometres along scenic prairie roads to the Day 1 finish line at the Camrose Regional Exhibition grounds. Rest stops with water, snacks, lunch,
first aid, washroom facilities and mechanical support are provided along the way. After arriving in Camrose, participants enjoy the festivities, including a dance, at the CRE. Cyclists stay overnight at Augustana Campus dorms and at a Camrose hotel, or
camp at the CRE, After a hearty breakfast at the CRE, cyclists go another 89 km back to the Ritchie Bros. finish line where they enjoy a barbecue with other cyclists, volunteers, and supporters. Create a team by encouraging family, friends, and coworkers to join you or

Charity garage sale Submitted
Bethel Lutheran Church in Duggan Park is having a charity garage sale on June 6 to benefit Neighbour Aid and a sister church in Colombia. This sale will also benefit you as refreshments will be served free, there will be fun for the children and music for the adults. Some items will be free and many bargains will be found. The youth group will be roasting hot dogs served with chips and pop as a fundraiser for the 2016 youth convention to be held in Prince Edward Island. This garage sale with a difference could be an outing all on its own! The idea started last February during Lent. One of our members had come across the idea of a “1,000 item purge” and thought it could be used during the season of Lent. Many Christians give up things during Lent to remind themselves that Jesus gave up his life for us in His death on the cross, remembered during Lent and on Good Friday. Since materialism and consumerism are seen by some Christians as distractions from a life of faith and service and following Jesus, the idea of “giving up stuff” for Lent caught on. Not everyone chose “1,000 items” as their goal, but at least 10,000 items were given up by Bethel members this Lent and Easter season. Not all those items will be in the garage sale. Some went to the Thrift Shop, or were recycled, or to the garbage or to friends and family. But the church fellowship hall will be packed with hundreds of great items. The food bank and Neighbor Aid do excellent work in helping people with a variety of needs. A grocery cart always sits near the entrance of Bethel church to remind members of local needs. Our sister church in Bogota, Colombia, reminds us of people needing support far away. These two ministries are near and dear to our hearts and so the proceeds from the garage sale will be divided between them. Stop at Bethel Church this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Do some shopping, have some coffee, juice and cookies, enjoy some music, fun and conversation, buy a quick lunch. See our unique church building, find a bargain. We are located in Duggan Park at the corner of 41 Avenue and 73 Street.

Water ceremony to be held at Judy and Roy Louis home June 6 By Dan Jensen
The Association for Life-Wide Living of Alberta, Battle River Watershed Alliance, Friends of Fridhem Society, and Immanuel Anglican Church at Wetaskiwin will be hosting a Battle River Water Ceremony at the home of Judy and Roy Louis starting at 10 a.m. June 6. “It is the fourth in a four-year ritual that began in 2012 and finishes with this year’s ceremony,” said Association for Life-Wide Living of Alberta spokesperson Jane Ross. Water ceremonies were a way the First Nations people in the Maskwacis area recognized the importance of the Battle River as a source of life for themselves and settlers alike. Emphasis is placed on learning from nature and the river itself. “They were revived again in 2012 in recognition of the improved relationships between the First Nations and the descendants of the people who moved here in the late 19th and early 20th
century,” said Ross. “They are a way to revisit the importance of the river to everyone who is touched by the river or uses it.” The revival of the water ceremonies was introduced and is supported by Maskwacis elders. “Roy (Louis) told the elders that there hadn’t been any ceremonies for 65 years and made the proposal that they (elders) bring it back,” said Battle River Watershed Alliance education and outreach coordinator Nathalie Olson. Honour blanket A ceremony highlight will be the presentation of a Honour Blanket to Augustana dean Dr. Allen Berger for his work in promoting opportunities for First Nations people at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta and the University of Alberta as a whole. The efforts of Dr. Berger and Dr. Roger Epp are in continuity of institutional connections with Maskwacis neighbours begun in the early 1970s. In 1976, more than 5000 people gathered on Dried Meat Hill to com-
memorate the signing of Treaty 6. According to Berger in his 2015 Spring Soiree address, the percentage of First Nations students at Augustana is the second highest in the U of A, after the Faculty of Native Studies. The ceremony will be followed by the opportunity to learn about what the First Nations and settlers people are doing together, as well as a traditional Cree give-away. “A give-away is where participants bring useful items or items of beauty and give them away,” said Olson. “The items are placed in the middle of a circle of people and they handed out by helpers.” Dr. Russell Schnell (Castor), who is honorary chair of the Association for Life-Wide Living of Alberta, as well as the co-holder of a Nobel Prize for his work on air quality, will be the day’s guest speaker. Setting an example The work that the First Nations and settler communities have been doing in the Battle River area has caught the eye of
Australians Dr. Andrew Creed, Dr. Chris Kavelin and Aboriginal John Clarke, all three of whom will be present for the ceremony. “Dr. Creed, who is an Australian business professor, attended the Spirit of the Land Conference at Augustana in 2012, where he noted that a number of similarities between what the First Nations settler peoples are doing in Battle River and what the aboriginals are trying to accomplish where he lives,” said Ross. Teepee raising A teepee raising ceremony will be held at the Louis home starting at 4 p.m. June 5. To register or obtain more information, call Battle River Watershed Alliance at 780-6720276. The Louis home is approximately six miles east of Maskwacis. Go to the corner that has a large power transformer on power poles at the intersection and a ball diamond backstop, and then turn north. If you cross the bridge you have gone too far.

Dr. Schultz shares thoughts on love and forgiveness
Dyann Schultz learns importance of trust By Dan Jensen
By Dan Jensen
Dr. Darryl Schultz has made it a habit to read a portion of scripture every day. "I think that initially it started out more as a discipline, something that seemed a good thing to do," said Dr. Schultz, who was the guest speaker at the Camrose Ministerial Association sponsored City County Prayer Breakfast May 13. "What I found was that time and time again, as I was reading through the scriptural portion that day, the scripture directly related to what was happening in my life. That portion of scripture was giving counsel, direction, insight as well as giving correction to me. It was as though, and quite literally, God was speaking to me." Dr. Schultz believes that the scriptures are current, applicable, alive and inspired. "When (Dyann and I) read the scriptures, the most important question we have asked is not 'What does this mean?' but rather 'How can we live this?' he said. "The challenge is then to work the Word of God into our lives. Life of significance Dr. Schultz and his family have placed an emphasis on living generously and graciously at home and in the community, as well as in dental missions around the world. "We are attempting to view ourselves as managers and stewards of assets that have been given to us by God and not the owners of assets looking to gain more assets," he said. "Participating in dental missions is just one way to live out what it means to be generous and give without expecting any return." Dr. Schultz said Camrose is ripe with opportu-
Dyann and Dr. Darryl Schultz shared their life experiences at the Prayer Breakfast.
nities, whether they be with community service organizations, churches, Camrose Neighbor Aid, Martha's Table, or Meals on Wheels, to live out a God created identity. "There are many opportunities right here as well as beyond our borders." Loving others Dr. Schultz noted that the scriptural concept of asking ourselves what we want people to do for us then grabbing the initiative and doing it for them is the basis for sound business management. "The difficulty and struggle comes to us when we ask ourselves how we love someone when they have given us a really hard time, what we do when someone takes unfair advantage of us and what we do when a significant contract that was so carefully structured is being intentionally breached," he said. "I have found the over arching concept in the words of Jesus applicable here where he encouraged his followers 'for the purpose of good to be as wise as a serpent and as gentle as a dove.' Letting those
people who are hurtful to me bring out the best in me then is certainly challenging and certainly interesting. It is a scriptural instruction, and it requires some creativity." Forgiveness Dr. Schultz noted that while forgiveness is one of the 12 habits of highly successful people, three of the most difficult phrases in the English language are I'm sorry, I was wrong and please forgive me. "Jesus said to us there is a connection between what God does and what you do," he said. If you want forgiveness from God you need to forgive others. When you are ready to move away from your role as victim, remember you can forgive someone without excusing their behaviour." What is my part Dr. Schultz explained it is important to ask about our roles when praying for others, praying for direction or praying for forgiveness. "(Dyann and I) have found the words 'What is my part in this?' to be foundational in our praying and yet some of the most diffi-
cult words to work into the foundations of our lives," he said. "When praying for others, when praying for direction or when praying for forgiveness we continue to ask, 'Lord, what is my part in this?'" Dr. Darryl and Dyann Schultz were both born in Camrose. Darryl completed his pre-dentistry education at Camrose Lutheran College while Dyann, who was raised in Carstairs, worked as a secretary at Gardner College and as a dental assistant. After graduating from the University of Alberta Faculty of Dentistry, Darryl returned to Camrose to begin a practice in which he stayed until 2014. He is past president of the Alberta Dental Association and College, and serves presently as a dental consultant. Dr. Schultz and Dyann have four boys, four daughters-in-laws and nine grandchildren. They farm with their son, Tyler, and daughter-inlaw Melissa, and volunteer in their church and community. They have served on dental missions to Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Ukraine and Brazil.
Dyann Schultz has learned the importance of trusting God. "Faith in God and trusting Him is my life," said Dyann at the Camrose County City Prayer Breakfast May 13. "There is so much I don't understand so I choose to trust His better ways. Trust is an attitude of heart and soul. He who trusts in God is strong because he has God's strength." Dyann has found that prayer is a two-way communication. "Sometimes it is short and sweet, and other times it is long and intense," she said. "It has been said that the heart of prayer is prayer from the heart." Dyann initially objected to enrolling her boys in hockey. "Endless hours at the hockey rinks, icy road trips, and weekends away from church and family was not what I felt was important. I soon realized that God and prayers were at the hockey rinks, too and we needed to be there. Boys had to be kept busy and so we were." Dyann said that while she and her husband hope to continue serving in other countries using their dental skills, they realize there are simple acts of service they can do for family and community that can make a difference in their lives. "Last month, at home, for example, we had a foot washing at Easter with several of our children and grandchildren." Dyann expressed the wish that everyone will continue to cry out to the Lord for our leaders, co-workers, friends, family and neighbours.
St. Andrew's Anglican Church members provided the music at the Camrose City and County Prayer Breakfast at the Norsemen Inn May 13.

Victim Services holds annual duck race By Murray Green
The Camrose and District Victim Services is getting its rubber ducks in a row for the Duck Race during Jaywalkers’ Jamboree, June 6. “We wanted to continue with the good fundraiser and keep it going. It is an unique event and is an attraction at Jaywalkers’ Jamboree,” said
Brent Thiessen, a summer intern and court advocate with Victim Services. A course will be set up at the south end of Main Street in front of the Camrose United Church, with about 1,000 yellow rubber ducks. “We will be selling tickets right up to race time on Saturday at 2 p.m.,” explained Brent.
The first duck to cross the finish line gives the ticket holder $1,000. Second place wins $650 and third place is worth $350. The winner does not need not be present to win, so anyone over the age of 18 can purchase tickets. “We will have a booth at Jaywalkers to sell tickets and provide information
about Victim Services. There will also be face painting and Lucy will be there too,” said Brent. Canine Lucy assists with Victim Services in helping people in need. You can purchase your duck tickets at Jaywalkers’ Jamboree, ATB Financial, FCC Canada or Richardson’s Jewellery.
Women’s Institutes convention By Murray Green
The Alberta Women’s Institutes’ annual provincial convention takes place at the Norseman Inn in Camrose June 2 to 4. Women’s Institute (WI) is an organization that helps women of all ages to achieve change through personal growth, communication and education. “Our aims are to promote leadership among women, to encourage local community development, and to assist woman both locally and globally,” said local chair Diane Dammann. “At a local branch level or as a provincial group, we have made significant contributions to the quality of life for our families and our communities across Alberta for over 100 years.” There will be a handicraft display open to the public Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1 p.m. the opening ceremonies will take place with flags and a march in. The evening speaker will ask Why Bother with WI? On Wednesday morning, AWI will discuss and vote on resolutions. On Wednesday at 1 p.m., Misty Reberger will speak about the Rwanda Dental Dream.

These real Vikings will also be participating in the Saturday morning parade as well as performing combat demonstrations. Combat demonstration times will be posted at the camp. In the evening there will be a family dinner and dance with the band Domino performing at the Viking Community Hall. Tickets for the dance are available at the door. Converted to a museum, these grounds and buildings are filled with artifacts and displays from the community. The museum will be open on Saturday and Sunday with live music and a pancake breakfast. Vintage cars and trucks will be on display during the show and shine from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Sunday, the festival wraps up with a pancake breakfast and roller derby. Burn Ins hold CD release at Bailey By Murray Green
Elk ford, BC -based blues-rock band The Burn Ins will be holding a CD release party at the Bailey Theatre June 6 beginning at 8 p.m. The opening act will feature special guest local band the Mokry Blues Project. Tying the entertaining package together is Burn Ins guitar player, Aaron Mokry, who originates from Camrose. His brother Curtis heads the Mokry Blues Project. “It will be exciting to have my little brother and his band opening up for us. It will be cool for our family and friends to have us play on the same night in the same venue,” said Mokry. He was playing guitar for the Jill Hagen band, but when she stopped touring to marry and then start a family two years ago, Aaron joined The Burn Ins. Soon after, band member Matt Yeomans left to get married and it was a three-piece band again. “We toured with Jill Hagen on the Extreme Tour. We asked Aaron to come with us because we saw how good he was and we wanted to lure him into the band. We had a choice to make on whether to be weekend musicians, or play full time. We choose full time,” said Burn Ins drummer Aaron Lyall. “I liked the style of music these two played and I really enjoy it. The band is guitar oriented and since I play guitar, it was a good fit for me,” said Mokry. “They gave me the (musical) freedom to do what I wanted, which is always fun.” Where the band members are from doesn’t take anything away from the band. “We live on the road a lot, so it doesn’t matter where we call home. Home is where we are at today,” said Lyall. Mokry added that Alberta connections to the band led to the decision to play at the Bailey Theatre for the CD release. The Burn Ins have a mix of blues and rock in their sound. “Curtis Bassette from Martha’s Music was my guitar teacher, so I have the blues influence from him,” said Mokry. The Burn Ins competed in the CBC Searchlight event and reached the top 23 across Canada. “We won our region and were part of the top group. The competition started with more than 3,000 and we reached the top 23, so we were pretty excited about that,” added Lyall. “It was hard to just choose one song off our album.” “Good Vibes” received a lot of support in Western Canada. The song is off the new CD, On the Inside that was released in late March.
Lillie Ester Mabel Granger
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Aaron Mokry of Camrose played with Jill Hagen before joining The Burn Ins. The band is performing on June 6.
“The release concert was pushed back because my dad was in the hospital. He had a heart attack and stroke. We planned some shows for March, but we pushed them back. This show not only celebrates our release, but the fact my dad is doing really well now. He will be our special guest,” said Mokry. “My dad loves to see his kids play, so it will be a treat for him to listen to both of us in the same place on the same night. My family has always supported me and they have never said you can’t do music.” “The Bailey is a super venue, probably one of the best we have played at and it has a lot of history. We’re excited to play at the Bailey.” “We played at the Alice Hotel a few times and people told us we should play at the Bailey because it is such a good venue,” said Lyall. “Aaron’s parents are so supportive. The first time we played at the Alice, his parents sat through two entire four hour shows. We didn’t have a lot of songs yet, so they heard every song twice. I was shocked they stayed for the whole two nights.” The progression to the Bailey was a natural fit. “The release concert at the Bailey will have a family atmosphere because we want everyone to come out and listen to our music and the new CD,” said Mokry. The band will be touring mainly Alberta and
B.C. this summer and then join the Extreme Tour for a fourth year in September. “The tour is a non-profit organization that targets at-risk youth and we promote positivity and positive life choices,” said Kristine Lyall, the lead singer of the group. “We want to help people to know that they are not alone. They have people in the community that care about them. It is really rewarding. It is hard work, but to see them realize they have potential and give them hope is rewarding.” The tour takes them to places they wouldn’t normally see like northern Canada and Japan. The proceeds help the band with expenses. The Burn Ins were nominated for the best new artist at the Kootenay Music Awards prior to the CD release concert. The members explained how the band name came about. “In order for the tubes (in the equipment) to sound good, you have to let the tubes burn in. They have to be hot to produce good tone. We looked at the parallel of the band and we have to be on fire to sound good. We have to be passionate about music,” said Aaron Lyall. With the price of admission, you will also receive a free download. Advance tickets are available at the Bailey Box Office or online.
Lillie Ester Mabel Granger passed away at the age of 97 years at St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s and a recent stroke. She was born on the home place north of Bawlf to Edmund and Ida Cappis into a family of four brothers and four sisters. Growing up on the farm, she developed a love for the land and for animals, especially horses. She told us that her mom said, “If Lillie could plant her butt on it, sooner or later she’d come riding by.” Those were the days she rode horseback to school and loved every minute. Living in a farming community she eventually took a “shine” to Frank Granger at one of the local social functions. She eventually married him on November 22, 1939 in Camrose. Moving onto a farm near Frank’s home place, they made their first home in a granary. She fell into the role of a farmer’s wife with ease, always doing her part in both church and community, helping with many Ohaton fall suppers. On September 29, 1940, they welcomed their first son, Francis. Eddy followed on January 10, 1943. Twins followed which was a big New Year’s surprise! Marvin and Marlene were born on January 1, 1946. Not anticipating two babies, Frank made a divider for the only crib, and a dear friend Ragna Sheets sewed an extra dozen diapers. Lillie was an all-around farm wife. Family and friends were always welcome at the Granger house, often arriving around coffee or meal time to enjoy some of Lillie’s wonderful cooking. In 1961, they left the farm and moved to Camrose. Frank drove school bus and both of them worked at the auction mart every Saturday. Retirement came and they moved to Hardisty where they resided on Ed’s farm in 1973. The year 1995 found them moving back to Camrose to an apartment and, later on, making the decision to move into Stoney Creek Lodge. She resided there until Frank passed in 2006. As Alzheimer’s worsened, she had to be moved first to Faith House and later to Sunrise Village where she resided until recently. She had a zest for life, loved a good joke and enjoyed music, teaching many of us to dance. Most of all, she loved her family and friends. The grandchildren soon learned not to smell the whipped cream when she asked if it smelled bad! When she was cooking her famous “big pancakes,” there was always a group of kids around waiting for a taste! Many days were spent at Grandma’s house and were enjoyed by each of her 16 grandchildren! Even on her 97th birthday, she wanted to keep the paper cups just in case the kids came for a visit. Lillie was predeceased by her husband Frank; all of her siblings; and her grandson Dwight Granger. She is survived by her four children Francis (Jennifer), Ed (Carol), Marvin (Ardis) and Marlene (Don Delowski); 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. In the days prior to her passing when we visited, the first question was, “ Have you seen Frank? I’ve been waiting for him to pick me up.” We know that she is now in a better place reunited with him, probably scolding him for not picking her up and asking if he needs a haircut. Lillie was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed by all. Rest in Peace, Mom - we love you. Your comfort and support are greatly appreciated and gratefully acknowledged. A celebration of life was held on Monday, June 1, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment took place at Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. Memorial donations can be made to Hardisty Hospital Auxillary, Box 661 Hardisty, AB T0B 1V0, the Alzheimer Society or Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Marie Elizabeth Stang
Joan Ozubko
May 3, 1928 – May 21, 2015
Joan Ozubko of Edmonton, AB, formerly of Tofield, was born in Viking on October 19, 1938 to Peter and Josephine Ozubko. She passed away in Edmonton on May 22, 2015 at the age of 76 years. She is survived by her loving family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 30, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Tofield. Interment took place at Tofield Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Marie Elizabeth Stang of Camrose, AB passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the age of 87 years. Marie was born to Edward and Magdalena Shermak in May 1928. She was the second eldest of five children. She married Florian Stang in 1948 and would have been married 52 years when Florian passed away in 2000. They spent a year-and-a-half as newlyweds in Daysland and, during that time, they had their only child, Lorraine. They returned shortly after Lorraine’s birth to Camrose, and she and Florian built a home where they resided for their entire married life. Health issues in 2012 left Marie unable to care for herself so her residence became Sunrise Village Care Facility. Marie started working at Meraw’s 5¢ to $1.00 when she was 16 years old and worked there until it closed in 1973. She assisted many a family member or friend in selecting the perfect gift and ensured they were elegantly wrapped with a bow, even if the gift was 25¢. She spent several years at Mina’s Jewellery, China & Gifts on Main Street before moving out of retail to an optical company. She learned a new skill making prescription eye glasses. She retired from this position when she turned 65. She was active at St. Francis Xavier Church with the Catholic Women’s League which she joined in 1954. Many weekends and vacations were spent camping – during the ’60s in a tiny tent trailer, then upgrading to a trailer with all the comforts of home in the early ’70s. Marie discovered she loved to fish and was determined to catch a large salmon while fishing off the pier in the Burrard Inlet in Vancouver during a vacation there. Unfortunately after several hours, she was forced to give up by her fishing companions. Traveling to new destinations was a favorite thing for them to do. She and Florian traveled to Europe. Then they discovered cruises, taking four cruises, including one to the Panama Canal on Princess Cruises. She also enjoyed vacations to Florida, Hawaii and Las Vegas. Her hobbies included fancy needlework, ceramics painting and weaving. She also enjoyed playing cards and the board game Aggravation especially at family functions. She is predeceased by her husband Florian; and her brothers Edward and Joseph. She is survived by her daughter Lorraine; sonin-law Lyle Breland; grandchildren Shane (Lori), Shawn (Margaret) and Simone; great-grandchildren Tyler (Terri) and Morgan (Matt); great-great-granddaughter Norah; sisters Cecelia and Barbara; and nieces and nephews. She will be missed by family and friends, but they are assured she is at peace now. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Larry Pederson officiating. Interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Liver Foundation, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, or to the charity of one’s choice. In loving memory of
Joseph William Longhe November 13, 1924 – June 5, 2010 Those we love remain with us For love itself lives on Cherished memories never fade Because a loved one’s gone. Jessie Ann Louise Merkel (nee Cail) August 13, 1925 – May 22, 2015 Jessie, “Queen of Cooking,” resided in her home in Camrose until a brief hospitalization and sudden passing on Friday, May 22, 2015. Jessie was born on August 13, 1925 to Frank and Katherine Cail in Dinant, AB, where she was raised on a farm and attended school. She moved to Edmonton to complete high school and then business college. She married Stanley Merkel in 1946 then moved often with the RCAF – living across Canada, in France and Italy. Jessie and Stan had a daughter, Katherine, who is named after Jessie’s mother who died shortly after the birth, lingering with cancer six months longer to await the delivery. Jessie worked at many vocations – bank teller, optician and, lastly, as an administration clerk with DND until retirement. She enjoyed serving people. Her passion was always cooking, often reading recipes at bedtime. A close second was her devotion to animals and especially her dog of 13 years, Corky O’Grady, a spunky cairn terrier. Not to shed tears easily, Jessie’s hurt was palatable anytime animals were abused; sometimes confronting a person if a dog was locked in a hot car or a trucker if livestock was confined in a hot semi. Jessie walked the talk! She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Katherine Merkel (Bill Lockhart); grandchildren Leslie, Blair and David Lockhart; great-grandchildren Mercedes and Alexander Fogarassy; sister-in-law Vera Cail; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jessie was predeceased by her husband Stan; parents Frank and Katherine Cail; sisters Margaret Hanna and Frances Barclay; and brothers John Cail and Bill Cail. Our thanks to everyone who visited Mom in the hospital and to Vera, Joan, Annelie and Terrie who comforted Mom during her passing while Katherine and Bill were in flight. Also, a special gratitude extends to Dr. Slabbert and Laurel, RN, who always cared for Mom’s well-being and understood how special she was. Local athletes earn medals at Alberta Francophone Games By Murray Green
A small contingent of local athletes made a big impact on the 2015 Alberta Francophone Games in Camrose from May 22 to 24. Known as Jeux francophones de l’Alberta and organized by the Fédération du sport francophone de l’Alberta (FSFA), the event was successful in terms of participation, and athletes enjoyed the facilities. In cross-country running, Juanita Hohm, of Camrose, won gold in the junior girls. Carson Hvenegaard won gold in the junior boys and Benjamin Eggink won bronze in the cadet boys. Cadets comprised of athletes from Grades 7 to 9 and juniors were from Grades 10 to 12. The cadet zone soccer team captured silver medals and played five games in total. Local Camrose players on the team were Molly Boyd, Olivia Soanes, Dominic Schellenberg, Dryden Browne, Davis Dewalt, Andrew Hohm, Gabriel Osborne and Owain Osborne. They were coached by Lloyd Mackenzie, a teacher at Camrose Composite High School. Camrose athletes competed in badminton, but ran into some strong competition and missed the medal round. Participating in badminton were Talia Dewalt, Eggink, Juanita Holm and Carson Hvenegaard. “We had some strong athletes, but not enough to compete in the other sports,” said local organizer Nathalie Bernard. Other sports in the Games included basketball, volleyball and ball hockey. The event stared with opening ceremonies and concluded with a closing ceremony at CCHS. Every year, more than 350 athletes (Grade 7 to 12) take part in the Alberta Francophone Games. The Alberta Francophone Games was more than a sporting event. It was an opportunity for young French-speaking athletes from nine different regions in Alberta to come together. Between the medal round and closing ceremony, the athletes and coaches enjoyed a barbecue at the high school.

Hakstol new coach of Philadelphia Flyers By Murray Green
Philadelphia Flyers general manager and former goalie Ron Hextall named Dave Hakstol as the 19th head coach in Flyers history last week. This brings the number of NHL coaches with a Camrose connection to three. He joins former Vikings coach Mike Johnston with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes coach Bill Peters, who played under Johnston in Camrose. Ironically, Hakstol went to Camrose Lutheran College (now University of Alberta Augustana) to finish his Grade 12 (under teacherprincipal LeRoy Johnson) and attempted to make the Vikings as a 17-year-old. He moved on to the Red
Deer Rustlers of the Western Hockey League before accepting a scholarship to play for the University of North Dakota Fighting Souix. “Dave brings a wealth of head coaching experience and success to the Philadelphia Flyers organization,” said Hextall in a web site press release. “He’s a proven winner and we are pleased to have him become part of the Flyers family.” This is Hakstol’s first National Hockey League coaching job. “I am extremely excited to be named the Philadelphia Flyers new head coach,’ said Hakstol. “Through the process here with Ron (Hextall) and everybody in the
Flyers organization, I have gained even more of an understanding of the history and tradition of this organization and I’m very proud to become part of the Philadelphia Flyers.” Hakstol, 46, spent the last 11 seasons coaching at the university he attended compiling an overall record of 289-143-43 with a .654 winning percentage in 475 games. In 2014-15 he led North Dakota to a 29-10-3 record with a .726 winning percentage and a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four. The former Camrose resident (originally from Warburg) played for the Indianapolis Ice and Manitoba Moose before retiring from playing to be an assistant
coach with the Moose. He left Winnipeg in 2000 to be an assistant coach in North Dakota (joining Bashaw’s Brad Berry, a former Winnipeg Jet, as an assistant coach) before being named the head coach four years later. North Dakota made the NCAA tournament in every one of Hakstol’s 11 seasons as head coach and reached the Frozen Four seven times in that span, which is the most of any program in the country during that period. Hakstol led North Dakota to an overall postseason record of 54-24 for a .692 winning percentage, including a 17-11 record in the NCAA tournament, during his tenure. Continued on page 29

Grad comments “We ask that Thou will bless these beautiful children, these lovely young men and women with Thy love and guidance. I ask that Thou would bless them that as they complete high school and head out into this new world for them, as they go onto further education for their training, that they might have the courage that is needed to pursue their dreams and follow their hearts.” – Invocation.
‘It’s Time to Begin’ theme of CCHS Class of 2015 graduation
“You worked hard to complete your high school requirements and now move onto the next chapter of your life. Tonight we pay tribute to and recognize the accomplishments of the Class of 2015. It is our hope that all of you will become all that you were meant to be.” – Norm Erickson, on behalf of the Battle River School Division. “Good friends are empowering. They give us a constant shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen to your problems, and helping hand when you need it. A friend has the ability to know how to make you smile when you are sad. It is time to begin a new chapter in our lives and soon we will all travel different paths. We share a bond that we will never forget.” – Gracie Yelland and Taylor Johnson in their tribute to friends. “Throughout the years here we have created a special bond with the teachers that we can call friends outside of school. We’ll miss them, but we will cherish the memories we have made.” – Jennifer Helgeland and Rachel Adrian in their tribute to the staff. “Graduates, whether you have an interest in carpentry, welding, the sciences, history, literature or taxidermy, I urge you to do your best, Do good. As Albert Einstein said, learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to never stop questioning. I know the future is safe because it is filled with these good and nice kids. When you look for the good in others you discover the best in yourself.” – Greg Barclay in his response to the tribute to the staff. More of the valedictorian speech on page 28
Coordinators of Ceremonies Christian Ford and Kellie Gainsforth demonstrated a few moves at the Camrose Composite High School Class of 2015 Spring Exercises May 8.
Grads encouraged to cherish memories Rohan Manaloor gave the valedictory address at the Camrose Composite High School Class of 2015 Spring Exercises May 8.
Good evening honoured guests, members of the community, staff, family and fellow graduates. It is such an honour to be standing here before you as valedictorian, representing the graduating class of 2015. To begin, I would like to thank the people who helped us to be here today. To our friends who brought the good, and the not so good out in all of us. To our teachers, who acted as coaches and counsellors, helping us realize our full potential. You dedicated your time and effort before, during and after school, inspiring us to follow our dreams, helping us discover our talents, and, of course, providing us with knowledge and insight every day. Most of all, thanks you to our parents and guardians. You have been supporting and caring for us from the very beginning, providing us with your valuable wisdom and understanding. Our high school journey would not have been the same without you. You will always hold a special place in our hearts. Reflecting on this year’s
graduation theme, “It’s Time to Begin,” I started to wonder what that actually meant. I asked myself, “What are we beginning?” Fellow graduates, today marks the beginning of a new journey that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Graduation is a time to celebrate, yet it is also a time to plan for the future. We will begin thinking about how our world should look in the following years to come. We will have to look at the challenges that lie ahead of us. Graduation is the first step among many, to begin a life after high school and prepare ourselves to meet those challenges. Our lives will be a constant test of commitment and perseverance. In order for us to succeed and bring out the best that life has to offer, we must demonstrate a level of determination that is constant and steady. Some of us will continue with our education or pursue a trade. Others will directly join the workforce. No matter where you end up, remember that we will always be connected to the same beginning. Graduation is our new beginning. Three years ago we started our journey as high school students in an unfamiliar setting. For us, it
was a brand new school, with brand new teachers and brand new opportunities. Walking through the doors of Camrose Composite High School, we were welcomed by the many smiling faces of the administration and school staff. This marked the start of our high school experience. Switching from classroom to classroom, I still remember being asked the same question in every room. “Are you Robin’s little brother? ” I started to wonder if I would always be the “little brother.” However, that didn’t stop me from pursuing what I’ve accomplished today. In fact, in terms of height, I’m technically no longer the little one in the family. I am sure that each graduate here today has achieved what they wanted to accomplish through hard work and determination. Fellow graduates, as we begin the next chapter in our lives, I encourage you to never stop pursuing your goals and always aim for the top. Our accomplishments are a direct result of your pursuit of excellence. Our journey through high school has been a challenging one. Every day, we encountered new concepts,
theories and problems that helped us realize our intellectual aptitude. It has granted us with the knowledge and understanding that we will use in order to make a difference in our future. Although, most of us are still asking why we would ever have to know what the factored form of a polynomial is or why we read Shakespeare every single year. Even though it may seem unnecessary, everything we have learned has made an impact on our lives. It has shaped who we are today. No matter how small the impact might be, education has driven us to succeed and will continue to drive us towards our future with confidence. Philosopher Herbert Spencer once said, “The great aim of education is not knowledge, but action.” By taking action and working towards the future, we become the citizens of tomorrow. It is the knowledge we have gained that determines how we approach new experiences. Our time at CCHS has prepared us with the education necessary to take the next leap forward. It will bring forth a new generation of skilled workers and professionals, who will make a positive contribution to our society.

2015 Ford Fusion Simply irresistible
Dan Madison By Dan Jensen
The 2015 Ford Fusion at Lamb Ford Sales is bound to capture your attention. From the elegant grille to the radiant LED taillights, lamps, Ford Fusion's sculpted lines and swept-back silhouette prove irresistible to the eye. Inside, a high degree of craftsmanship extends even to the lighted, lined and lockable glove compartment. Performance Equip your gasolinepowered Fusion with a standard 2.5 litre IVCT four-cylinder engine or one of two EcoBoost turbocharged, direct-injection powerplants. With robust low-end torque and virtually no turbo lag, EcoBoost technology squeezes maximum power from each drop of fuel. Along with impressive efficiency. The 1.5 litre engine with six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission and Auto Start-Stop uses just 6.3 litres of fuel per 100 km. For performanceminded drivers, the 2.0 litre EcoBoost teams with a SelectShift automatic whose six speeds can be paddle-shifted from the
steering wheel. As you accelerate through corners, standard Torque Vectoring Control enhances your hold on any road. Fusion Hybrid delivers exceptional ride and handling as it seamlessly switches between its 2.0 litre Atkinson-cycle fourcylinder gas engine and electric traction motor to help maximize fuel efficiency. In fact, it can operate in electric mode even at highway speeds, thanks to an advanced lithium-ion battery that powers the electric traction motor. To coach you how to drive more effectively, vibrant "Efficiency Leaves" grow on the Fusion Hybrid SmartGauge with EcoGuide instrument cluster. The more efficient the drive, the more lush your green leaves – giving you instant feedback. Recharging your battery as you drive, the Regenerative Braking System captures over 90 per cent of the brake energy and uses it to help maximize your efficiency. Even when you are braking you're moving forward. With 2.7 litres per 100 km city/highway combined (electricity and gas), an all-electric driving range of up to 32 km
and a gas-plus-electric driving range of 901 km, the Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid may run all-electric and use no gasoline at all on short commutes – even while cruising at highway speeds. You can recharge at home in about 2.5 hours using the LEDilluminated charge port and certain Ford recommended 240-volt home charging stations. Monitor and schedule charging at home at one of the growing number of public charging stations. Finely crafted Relax in supportive leather-trimmed 10-way power, heated front seats with driver's side memory. Recharge your devices with a convenient 110volt power outlet. Enjoy the output from a well-balanced, 12-speaker audio system from Sony. Setting the ambient lighting to your choice of seven hues brings it all together. A new Terracotta package adds beauty with Terracotta-coloured premium leather-trimmed seats and more. Your sense of responsibility is also satisfied inside the Fusion. Nearly 40 recycled 16-ounce bottles go into the EcoCloth seats on select models, while recycled material
is used for the injectionmoulded splash shields and other underbody components. SYNC voice-activated technology delivers handsfree calls, music and more with simple voice commands. Once paired with your phone it can download your contacts and play Bluetooth-streaming music. Or, plug in your MP3 player, USB or iPod to listen to your favourites. Just push a button on the steering wheel and say things like "Call Ashley Martin" or "Play playlist: Rock." Fusion responds to your touch as well via the eight inch colour LCD touch screen on SYNC with MyFord Touch. Colourful graphics, a large touch screen and simple controls make it easy to operate your phone, entertainment, navigation and climate. For interactive maps you can zoom and scroll, or Aupgrade to the voice-activated Navigation System. Advanced technology Ford Fusion helps you maintain your lane with a Lane-Keeping system. It can help detect lane markings with a forward-facing camera and send vibration pulses to the steering wheel and apply steering
torque if needed, prompting you to steer back toward centre. Make parallel parking easier with active park assist. This system not only helps you find a spot, it actually steers the vehicle into place while you control the gear shifter, brake and accelerator pedals. Get a heads-up from adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support. This system helps maintain your choice of four preset gaps from the vehicle in front of you and can alert you to a potential collision. If one is detected, it flashes a warning on the windshield, sounds an alarm, and preps the braking system to help. Stay alert to traffic detected in blind spots as you drive forward, or traffic nearing either side of the vehicle as you slowly back up, thanks to BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert. It can help warn you using lights embedded in the sideview mirrors. You can see the 2015 Ford Fusion at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Grads urged to cherish memories Continued from page 23 Our time in high school has been the most valuable time of our lives. There will be many moments that we will want to remember and other times we may want to forget. However, through all of these memories, we always had our friends by our side. CCHS has provided us with friendships that we will value for the rest of our lives. In 2012, we were Grade 10s in an unfamiliar environment. With the help of old friends and new ones along the way, we were easily able to transition into the high school life. Whether it was through music, sports, drama or travel, we always found a way to connect with each other, making lasting friendships. My fellow graduates, my friends, cherish the memories that our school has given you. Treasure the bonds that were made and carry them with you throughout your lifetime. In a few short weeks, we will be leaving the comforts of CCHS, a place we called home for the last three years. Our high school careers will be over, and many of us will move on to pursue even greater opportunities. What we’ve learned, will open up an infinite number of possibilities. We will be granted the time and opportunity to decide what our next step in life will be. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” My fellow graduates, before you leave tonight, I encourage you to ask yourself, what will I do with the time that is given to me? No matter what your answer is, always remember that all of us here today are starting from the same beginning. The end of high school is a time to begin. Congratulations Class of 2015!

Hakstol new coach in Philadelphia Continued from page 20
Hakstol led North Dakota to three regular season conference championships, two in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA, 2008-09, 2010-11) and one in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC, 201415). North Dakota also won WCHA playoff championships in 2005-06, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12. Hakstol received conference coach of the year honors twice, in the WCHA in 2008-09 and in the NCHC in 2014-15. He was also an eighttime finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year.
City council has asked Camrose administration to obtain a pair of quotations for renovating Mirror Lake Centre once staff move to the new City Hall. Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer believes the initial renovation estimates of $200,000 to $250,000 that were provided during council’s 2015 budget deliberations are out of whack. “The indication I have received from my discussions is that we can probably do it for less than $80,000,” said Mayer at the first Committee of the Whole Council meeting in the new City Hall May 19. “I would like us to negotiate a price to remove the petitions that have to come out, fix the flooring and do whatever else we have to do when we move out of the premises rather than go for tender.” The City of Camrose has been informed by the Seniors Society that not everything at the Mirror Lake Centre has to be put back to the way it was before the City took possession, as was originally agreed upon. “They (the society) have shown us what can stay and what can go, so there is less area that we thought that will have to be torn out,” said the City’s acting chief administrative officer, Kim Isaak. “The finance area is going to stay the same because that is where the Handivan is going to go. The area where we are going to be tearing down walls is in the administration section.
The rest they are happy to leave as it is.” City acting general manager of infrastructure and planning Jeremy Enarson noted that under the City of Camrose procurement policy, work under $200,000 does not have to be tendered. “If the anticipated cost of the work is less than $200,000 you need two written quotations,” said Enarson. Mayor Mayer said one of the priorities for the Seniors Society is to get the roof repaired so work can be finished up inside around the washroom area. The City has still not decided what it wants to do with the Mirror Lake Centre basement. “We have to get that figured out,” said Enarson, adding he is concerned about the basement’s long term viability. “We are having discussions now in terms of long term facility planning for the City. Councillor Wayne Throndson questioned whether there should be ongoing discussions about the future of the Mirror Lake Centre and the possibility of housing the seniors in a different building. “I am curious about the timing of when we have to spend $80,000 for renovations or $250,000 for the roof and whether we should hold off on those type of expenditures until the seniors decide what the future is,” said Throndson. “Clearly they have a stake
in this and we should hear from them. I am not saying they shouldn’t have a facility, I am just looking at spending $300,000 or $400,000 here without including the basement that is in tough shape.” Mayor Mayer said the basement is something that can be addressed once the City staff are out. “Once that happens we can get our own safety codes people in there to find out what we have to do.” Mayer said he is not familiar with the time frame for completing the renovations. “The understanding that I had was that we would proceed with the renovations when the City was out. I am not even sure there is a written agreement. I think it is just when we are out, we will restore this.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland suggested going ahead with the restoration to a minimum compliance with what the seniors have requested and then taking time to decide what to do next. “I see it taking a whole lot longer to decide what we are going to do with the building if we are going to relocate the seniors in a different situation,” said Hoveland. “We are looking at least a year or more before that is decided. If we can do the renovations for $80,000 or less that is great, but we need to do that at this point.”
