in Camrose. The beaver population that frequent the water corridor, has been doing what comes naturally in our urban setting. They are spending their nights cutting down trees which they need for their food supply and dam building. Their presence along the west end of Mirror Lake is acutely obvious – numerous 80 to 120-year-old trees have been chosen as prized candidates by the ambitious rodents. The City of Camrose, Community Service Department, has attempted to manage the population with a balanced approach that includes: the caging of trees, dam removals, pond leveling systems and trapping. Such management tools assist the City of Camrose in keeping the numbers to appropriate levels. Our pond leveling system seems to be working in University of Alberta Augustana Campus area. Wrapping/caging trees with wire, in the public areas, or on residential property, makes it more difficult for the animals to sink their teeth into trees deemed crucial logistically, or esthetically, to the area.

City receives $20,000 from CN for trees By Dan Jensen
The Camrose forest is experiencing new growth. Camrose Wildlife Greenspace Stewardship Society has been enlisting the help of the City of Camrose, students, Scout groups and volunteers this summer to plant approximately 3,500 balsam, poplar, willow and Colorado spruce trees and seedlings in the Stoney Creek Valley and former snow dump area north of the CN train trestle on 50 Street. “We used to pile all our snow in the area but because of environmental reasons (salt going into the creek) we can’t do that anymore,” said Camrose parks director Chris Clarkson. The trees and seedlings were purchased by the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society (CWSS) using a $20,000 grant from the CN EcoConnexions From The Ground Up program. “We wrote and received approval for a program called Greening Camrose,” said CWSS chair Glen Hvenegaard before a June 13 planting event involving members of City council and others from the community. “The goal is to reforest some of the areas through the Stoney Creek Valley. We know that having a rich natural heritage here is important for recreation, for erosion control, for stabilization, dog off leash areas, bird watching and skiing. It is really important for us to protect the valley.”
CN launched the EcoConnexions From the Ground Up Program in 2012 as part of its continuing focus on environmental sustainability and helping the communities in which it operates develop projects to enhance the community’s environment, social health and general well-being. “The program is a demonstration of the social, environmental and economic benefits that can be brought to the greenspaces, making Canadian communities better places to live in, work in and visit,” said CN police spokesman Const. Terry Moser. CN provided From the Ground Up funding to 35 Canadian communities this year, up from 30 communities a year ago. Applications were evaluated by program administrators Trees Canada and Communities in Bloom on the basis of overall project, community engagement, sustainability, technical expertise, recognition of CN funding and budget. “We received 157 applications across Canada and very few of them were not of good calibre,” said Communities in Bloom founding president Raymond Carriere. The CWSS application received high marks for involving the City of Camrose as well as community organizations. “We are going to be meeting with the CN managers and deciders on this

program and they are going to be very pleased to see all the photos of the youth involved,” said Carriere. Hvenegaard said the tree planting has been a great learning experience for the students. “I saw a video yesterday of 120 kids planting on a hillside south of here. They were having a great time, learning about the natural world, learning about stewardship and contributing to the city’s environmental protection.”
Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer expressed gratitude to CN for the generous grant. “It will certainly help,” said Mayer. “It will be used to turn the green areas and spaces of Camrose into much more liveable and enjoyable locations.” Mayer said the City of Camrose has been concerned about protecting the city’s greenspace since the early days of the Community in Blooms competition. Formed in 2002, CWSS educates the residents of
Camrose with weekly sessions throughout the summer months (at Stoney Creek Centre every Thursday evening), and supports stewardship activities such as purple martin house builds and tree planting. Society members include representatives from the City of Camrose, the Wildrose Outdoor Club, the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, Camrose Ski Club, Camrose and District Fish and Game Association.
Wildlife Stewardship Society receives Emerald Award By Dan Jensen
The Alberta Emerald Foundation presented an Emerald Award to the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton June 4 for the work it has done to protect, preserve and enhance the environment. “We were very fortunate to receive the award,” said CWSS chair Glen Hvenegaard in a presentation to Camrose council June 15. “Since 1992 the (Alberta Emerald Foundation) has received over 2,000 (2,500) nominations resulting in a total of 204 (250) recipients. That is a 10 to one ratio.” The CWSS was chosen by a panel of knowledgeable third party judges as one of three finalists in the community group or not-for-profit category based on environmental benefits, commitment to the environment, sharing and innovation. “Fortunately our nomination was able to place a check beside each of those categories,” said Hvenegaard. The Emerald Award, along with being a pat on the back for a job well done, is an encouragement for the CWSS to continue the work it is doing,

as well as an incentive to take steps in new directions. “It recognizes the leadership that City council has provided to us as the society and the people who have been involved,” said Hvenegaard. The award should help the Society to leverage future support for funding applications and donations. The CWSS assists with the management of the greenspace in the city and supports stewardship activities like the weekly environmental education program that runs Thursday nights
throughout the summer at the Stoney Creek Centre. The Society also engages in stewardship projects that include the planting of trees throughout Stoney Creek Valley and the landlord program for the purple martin. “Our success with the purple martin program is growing,” said Hvenegaard. “We build the (purple martin) houses, we find landlords and we conduct research (on the martins) in hopes of maintaining their population.” CWSS activities are funded mainly by a grant from the
City of Camrose, as well as the Alberta Conservation Association, the Camrose and District Fish and Game Association, Ross Agri, and Camrose Rotary. “We want to thank them because without them the projects couldn’t continue,” said Hvenegaard. Ideas that are being considered by the CWSS for the future include a dedicated nature centre, additional greenspace research, and the proclamation designating Camrose as the purple martin capital of Alberta. “We can’t sit on our laurels of environmental stewardship,” said Hvenegaard. “There are always changes that are happening. The ideas are worthy of consideration and we will talk about them in the weeks and the months to come.” Councillor Bill Sears, who attended the Emerald Award presentation ceremony along with Hvenegaard, Camrose Parks director Chris Clarkson, Eva and Tom Tomaszewski from the Camrose and District Fish and Game Association, commended both the CWSS and the City parks department all of their efforts in making the greenspaces as beautiful as they are.
“It (greenspace) has been identified time and time again as a major attraction for bringing people into the city, for new residents, and as a quality of life issue for the residents that we have,” said Sears. “Greenspaces are identified as important and high up on the list of why people come to Camrose, so we thank you very much.” The Alberta Emerald Foundation’s Emerald Award celebration showcases environmental excellence in nine cross-sectoral categories. “We are the only Foundation in the country to recognize the important work of environmental leaders across all sectors,” said Alan Ross, chair of the board, Alberta Emerald Foundation. “By honouring and elevating the ingenuity, dedication and hard work of these individuals and organizations, we inspire others to follow their example, benefitting all Albertans with a healthier and cleaner environment. The emerald is a metaphor for all that is derived from the earth: it is brilliantly green, precious, beautiful in its natural form, nurtured and protected by nature, resilient and abundant.

Covenant Health St. Mary’s staff and volunteers to ride big bike for Heart and Stroke By Murray Green
Covenant Health St.
Mary’s Hospital Camrose staff and volunteers will be pedalling for the Heart and Stroke Team on the huge bike during a fundraiser at Rosehaven Care Centre on June 25 (Bethany Group, 4612-53 Street across from the hospital). “This is not only a fundraiser for Heart and Stroke, it is a time to celebrate the Stroke Unit Equivalent Care and Stroke Early Supported Discharge Program receiving permanent funding,” said Melissa Sztym, team lead and occupational therapist in the Stroke Unit.
“We have received unbelievable support from Covenant Health and the community and we want everyone to help us celebrate.” Presentations begin at 1 p.m. and the big bike ride starts at 2:15. This unique bike holds multiple riders who will be riding it around the block to create awareness for Heart and Stroke Month. “We are going to have a slide show, have a stroke client speaking on the care received, someone from the stroke action plan and then at the end some socializing,” said Melissa. “Then we are going to get on the big bike and
go for a little ride. There will be a mix of community and staff members on he bike. It seats 28 and right now we have more than that wanting to ride, which is great.” The bike might make its way to the hospital from Rosehaven to help raise awareness and money. June is Heart and Stroke Month, so more information is available at the hospital. You are reminded to watch for the signs of a stroke using the FAST method. Face – is it drooping, Arms – can you raise both, Speech – is it slurred or jumbled and Time – to call 911 right away.

Stroke Early Supported Discharge Program here to stay By Murray Green
Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose received exciting news recently. The Stroke Unit Equivalent Care and Stroke Early Supported Discharge Program received permanent funding. “We have a lot to celebrate and this is very good news for the Camrose community,” said an excited Melissa Sztym, team lead and occupational therapist in the local program. “Our program received permanent funding because of the successes and positive results we have achieved over the past year. Alberta Health Services’ Strategic Clinical Network Stroke Action Plan has made the decision to provide ongoing funding. This investment demonstrates a commitment to improving the equity of care in rural and small urban sites in Alberta. We are very excited to be able to provide enhanced stroke services to stroke survivors within our own community.” The stroke unit has focused on positive results achieved and a commitment to improving the equity of care in rural and small urban sites in Alberta. “This past year the entire team has worked hard and we have received 56 patient clients through the early discharge program and many more through the stroke care unit at the hospital,” explained Melissa. “We were able to treat patients at home in the early discharge program. The successful results we achieved over the last year have led to the permanent funding.” The announcement from AHS shows the dedi-

cation to rural communities and how well the program works in everyone’s homes. “This allows the province to have equal care in
the rural settings, as well as the big cities. We were the second team that started, after Red Deer, in February, 2014. Over the past
year we have experienced amazing results in Camrose. With all of the patients in St. Mary’s we have been able to decrease the length of stay from more than 15 days to below eight days,” related Melissa. “That is cut in half and the reason we have been able to do that is due to early discharge services being available to patients.” St. Mary’s Hospital provides efficient stroke care, so that when a patient does go home, the at-home services begin with a smooth transition. “At the hospital, one of the things we have really focused on is ensuring the stroke client coming to the emergency room receives all of the same services as in the big city called an order set,” said Melissa. “The order set is a pathway for stroke care and is ignited as soon as they come into emergency. The nurses use that order set to ensure patients receive the same care that is used around the province. The second thing we focus on is that the client receives maximum rehabilitation time.” Therapists see patients in a timely manner to ensure they receive the appropriate care and rehabilitation in the hospital. “The other thing is to make sure the nurses have the proper education required to know how to provide excellent care,” said Melissa. “Education is provided on stroke assessments and about 90 per cent of the nurses who provide stroke care are now trained. Training is ongoing because of staff changes. When we
started, we only had half of the nurses trained.” After being released from the hospital, patients can see up to 10 people on the early discharge team. “This team really worked hard on receiving successes, so the program would continue to be funded,” said Melissa. “We are focusing on seeing patients within two days from discharge. We see patients within an hour from Camrose and we are able to finish that rehabilitation within their own home and community.” Surveys have shown that patients have been satisfied with services and 100 per cent of them said they would recommend the early discharge program. “They liked being part of the decision making that revolved around their goals for care,” said Melissa. “Again 100 per cent of the feedback was positive on the care they received at home and that it focused on what they had to do to get back to doing the things they enjoyed.” Care is provided until they are integrated back into the community. People are linked to services within their community. “People recover much faster at home and they are so thankful we can come into their home. We hear that time and time again.” The stroke unit suggests to watch for the signs of a stroke using the FAST method. Face – is it drooping, Arms – can you raise both, Speech – is it slurred or jumbled and Time – to call 911 right away.

The Camrose Neighbor Aid Center food bank shelves are beginning to be barren of some products. While winter and spring months are full of activities to collect food, the summer months are usually a rest period for collecting. However, mid-June demands are emptying the shelves at a steady pace as supplies in some products have been diminished. “It’s normal for this time of year. Food coming in is slower, but the demand is still there. We want to stock up a bit more. The number of clients hasn’t gone down, but we could use some help filling the shelves that are low,” said program director JoAnne Tweed. “I thank people who are donating because we are making a difference in this community together. We are helping between 135 and 150 people per month.” The cereal shelf is the only one full. “We are in need of a lot of different foods. We are really short on pork and beans, canned vegetables, pasta, soup and spaghetti sauce,” added Jo-Anne. The shopping list includes canned fruit, any
canned vegetables, tomato sauce, tuna or canned meat, peanut butter, store purchased jam, crackers, cookies, ketchup, mustard and relish. The community is very supportive of the food provided by Neighbor Aid, but most of the drives by businesses, clubs and school functions happen in the winter. “The large drives do tend to happen in the winter and now we have gone through most of that food. We still have small individual donations, but we don’t have big drives in the summer to continue to stock the shelves,” said Jo-Anne. “We will also accept fresh garden vegetables as they come in later in the summer and packaged frozen meat. That means ground beef, chicken and small hams.” Donations are accepted on weekday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon at the 4525-54 Street Neighbor Aid location. Cheques are welcome that are made out to Camrose Neighbor Aid Center as well as cash to purchase perishables. If you have a big supply of food notify the center at 780-679-3220, so volunteers can help receive the food.

BEFORE
by Bonnie Hutchinson Role model of the week I have no idea why I was thinking about Julia Child this week, or what she has to do with anything related to me. In the 1960s, Julia Child introduced The Art of French Cooking to North America. That was a huge transition away from Shake ‘n’ Bake and instant pudding that were so popular at the time. For several days, two Julia Child incidents rattled around in my mind and I decided to make Julia my role model for the week. You’ll see why in a minute. Fearless I am old enough to remember seeing Julia Child on black and white TV. She was amazing in her day as the host of one of the first ever TV cooking shows. In one memorable show, she was showing how to flip an omelet. “You must be fearless,” she said. To demonstrate, she flipped the partially cooked omelet in her pan – and the omelet splatted onto the stove! This is what I remember of that scene. (Sidebar: I was unable to verify if my memory is accurate. I did however enjoy a delightful 45 minutes watching old Julia Child shows before I snapped out of my trance!) Back to the scene. So there was the omelet, lying splatted on the stove. Julia looked down at it, looked up at the camera and said, “Well, that didn’t go very well, did it?” And then she said, “That just proves my point. When I was about to flip the omelet, I had a moment of hesitation. I was not fearless!” Moderation The second Julia Child memory that’s been rattling around my mind is one of her comments. Someone challenged her on her lavish use of butter, at a time when people were just beginning to be aware of “bad cholesterol” in animal fat. I love Julia’s reply. She said, “I believe in moderation in everything – including moderation!” Role model Julia is going to be my role model for the week. In the next week, I’m scheduled to do a couple of things I’ve never done before. They’re not wildly new like introducing French cooking to North America, but they are out of the ordinary in my life, and far past both my comfort zone and my competence zone. Julia is going to be my role model in two ways: 1. I’m going to be fearless – or at least as fearless as I’m capable of… or maybe… Hmmm. I’m watching myself hedge my bets. Let me put it this way: I’m going to be fearless – in moderation! 2. If (or more likely “when”) I not only make mistakes but make them in public, I’m going to acknowledge, “That didn’t go very well, did it?” and enjoy the laughter. Turns out that Julia Child’s example is relevant indeed in times of making transitions. *** Some of my favourite Julia Child quotes: “This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook, try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!” “If you’re afraid of butter, use cream.” “I think every woman should have a blowtorch.” “Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all.”
Before and After: This main bath hadn’t been updated since the home was built in the 70’s and it definitely showed. The nook was the perfect place for a floating vanity with a coordinating floating, back-lit mirror. The tile pattern flows up the wall behind the mirror to make the space feel larger. Painting the walls a deep teal color added personality and created a calm atmosphere. This is a space that wows every time and, although it is unique; it is still classic and timelessly designed. If you are ready to transform your bathroom, give us a call!

MS BIKE TOUR PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE WARM RECEPTION
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Riders in the annual MS Bike Tour from Leduc to Camrose were numerous and they raised a lot of money for Multiple Scierosis research on June 13 and 14. About 1,926 participants on 216 teams made the trek to Camrose and raised around $1.92 million.
Camrose chosen to host Boston Pizza Cup By Murray Green
It wasn’t a difficult choice to select Camrose as the host of the Boston Pizza Cup (Alberta men’s provincial curling championships) at the EnCana Arena from Feb. 10 to 16, 2016. Darren McDermott was named the chair of the host committee to work alongside event manager Ken Duggan. It will be the fifth major arena curling event in Camrose. The Rose City Curling Club also hosted the Continental Cup of Curling, 2008; the Alberta Scotties, Jan. 2011; the Boston Pizza Cup, Feb. 2012; and the Canada Cup of Curling, Dec. 2014. “We have been very proud of what we have done in the past and we have volunteers in place that are experienced in hosting big events here in Camrose. The club was actually asked to host this event,” explained McDermott. Camrose has impressed the Alberta Curling Federation with past success. The organizing committee is now in place and volunteer recruitment has started. “We have had great attendance here, the players love coming here, the place is great and is a proven venue, and we have the same icemaker that has done such a great job in the past,” added McDermott. “All of these things line up to make it a great event.” Duggan pointed out that Camrose has set attendance records for both the women’s and men’s provincials events in the past. “The good thing about running Alberta Curling Federation provincials is that they are committee driven
events. The host committee has a lot of input, so that is exciting. There is a lot of excitement around the event (Boston Pizza Cup) because quite often the Brier champion comes from Alberta,” indicated McDermott. “It is hard to get to this event for teams because of competitive playdowns and strong competition in Alberta.” McDermott has been a big part of hosting all of the events in Camrose, but this will be his first event as the chair. “I have been kind of the vice-chair for past events. I learned a lot from Bob Seney
(past chair) and I learned from the best,” said McDermott. “With great volunteers in place, it is not too enormous for me.” Volunteers who will not be coming back mentored others, so the transition will be smooth. “We need between 185 and 200 volunteers for this event,” said McDermott. “The benefit of being a volunteer is that you can see the entire event, depending on what position you have, and you can see the event when you are not working,” added Duggan. “That is for the entertainment as well. We will have a volun-
teer lounge for snacks and refreshments. They will receive a jacket as well, all for a basic fee.” The website at www.2016bostonpizzacup. com has been launched and volunteers can register under the Volunteer Tab. You can also view how the other teams will qualify. Tickets will go on sale at about the end of September with full event packages until early January. The Alberta champion rink of Kevin Koe, Marc Kennedy, Brent Laing and Ben Hebert is the first team to qualify for the local event.
Pro Sports Photography Marc Kennedy and Ben Hebert from the Kevin Koe curling team sweep a rock into the house in action at the EnCana Arena.
Koe, with a different team, also won the last Boston Pizza Cup in Camrose. “Some very fine younger teams coming up include the Brendan Bottcher team that played the Koe team in the final of the provincials last year in Wainwright. Bottcher won the Junior Canadian and World Curling Championships in 2012 and topped that off by winning the CIS (Canadian University) Championships that same year,” said Duggan. “Last year they entered three of the four Grand Slam Curling events and made the semifinal in each of those three against the best teams in the world.” The event helps the local grassroots curling program. “Anytime that you can focus on curling in the community, we jump all over it,” said McDermott. “We have the Academy of Curling, a great junior program and we want everyone to come out and curl. Any exposure to curling is fantastic for the sport and our curling club. Any money that we make goes to the club to keep it running.” The organizing committee is still looking for a few sponsors for the event. The committee is also going to encourage school students to view the games through sponsor assistance. The entertainment venue has changed for this event. Daily entertainment, beverages and food will be available in the Rec Center after every draw. The RCCC is tossing the idea around of holding a concert with special entertainment at a bigger venue following the Friday night draw.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Many people recognize the term Lou Gehrig’s Disease, but have no idea what it really is. ALS is one of the cruelest diseases there is. Basically, your muscles slowly stop working. It affects everyone that has it a little differently. For me, it started with my left arm. It just got weaker and weaker. Now it is completely useless. Right now, my leg muscles, right arm and breathing muscles are weakening on a daily basis. It is difficult to deal with. As my wife Debbie says, ALS stands for Always Loosing Something. We are new grandparents this year of two babies that I won’t be able to watch grow up, or be able to spoil. I won’t be able to watch my own kids grow to be awesome parents (because they came from awesome parents) Debbie and I won’t be able to grow old together. It’s like a pyramid effect. All of my family, friends and former co-workers and associates are all affected in some way by this disease. There is comfort, however, in knowing that the ALS Society is there to help us with support in many different ways. They have discussion groups, children’s support groups and adult support groups for those who need it. They also have an equipment loan program available to ALS patients, such as wheel chairs, lifts, voice amplifiers and walkers. This walk is to help support the ALS Society so that these services remain available to us. I thank you for your support.

Aquatic centre improvements needed By Dan Jensen
Camrose residents conducted a demonstration in front of City Hall June 15 to call attention to the need for an improved aquatic facility. “We would like to see it extensively renovated or completely redone, depending on what the sustainability study shows and what would make the most sense,” said demonstration organizer Natalie Mills. “We just want something that meets the needs of the community. We are finding now the facility does not do that.” Mills noted that the shallow depth of the pool does not allow the Camrose competitive swim club (Sea Serpents) to host its own events (the club has to rent pools in other communities), and that the children’s and family area needs to be improved. “We would like to see a children’s and family area that is separate from the lane swim where the water is kept cooler because of the activities,” she said. “In the children’s area we would like to see warmer water, more activities, and safer water slides that don’t go into the deep end.” Mills also has concerns about the hot tub, which is not wheelchair accessible, as is the case with a number of other pools, and the hours the pool is open. “The hours are so limited that really the only public swim hours are on the weekend, from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sunday,” she
said. “That is very limited compared to other cities. As an example, the Leduc pool is open to the general public from 5:30 to 10 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends it is open for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.” Mills said her family does not use the Camrose aquatic facility as often as it would like. “We are often travelling to other facilities. We go to Wetaskiwin, Leduc, the Terwilliger pool, and Sherwood Park. Other people say they go to Stettler and Vegreville. A lot of people are commuting to other communities to go to the pool and that means they are supporting other communities more than our own.” Pool closures The Camrose Aquatic Centre has been forced to close twice in the past month. The first time was at the end of May when a water line broke in the spray park. “The way the drainage works it backed up into our pit, where our main circulation pumps are located,” said Camrose facilities director Dawn Mercereau. “We closed Thursday morning, but we were open by 4 p.m. the next day.” The second closure was the result of another water break. “This was a main water line in the lower mechanical area where we have all our pumps and systems,” said Mercereau. “The alarms did go off but unfortunately there was quite a

bit of water because it was a main water line break and it submerged several of the pumps in the basement, as well as the chlorination system. The repairs took a bit longer to do just because of the extent of the damage.” The Camrose Aquatic Centre was able to compensate for the disruption by rebooking some of the rentals and extending the passes for the lane
swimmers, as well as by extending the passes of those who are in the aqua fit programs. “We are refunding the people who were unable to get their programs in but unfortunately we had to cancel some of the school programs,” said Mercereau. Request for proposals Camrose City council issued a request for proposals on what should be done with the Aquatic
Centre at its meeting on Monday night (June 15). “I don’t know what the actual condition is because I haven’t been through it,” said Mayor Norm Mayer, “but I know there are a few things that need to be addressed, including the depth, which prevents diving and has been a concern for quite a while. I think we have to get a report back and go from there.”
Legion will dedicate new cenotaph on Canada Day By Murray Green
Canada Day will have special meaning this year for the community and members of the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. The opening ceremonies for Canada Day will begin at 11 a.m. on July 1 and then, at 11:45 a.m., the cenotaph will be unveiled with a dedication, south of the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. “Camrose now has a wonderful community cenotaph that everyone can be proud of,” said an excited Comrade Ragnar Gislason, who worked hard to launch the project. The City of Camrose also worked hard to complete the project by Canada Day. Light poles and flag poles have been installed to go with the concrete pad and gravel. Green grass has been laid. chapter of the IODE (Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire) donated the original First World War memorial to the citizens of
Camrose before there was a Legion. The cenotaph originally was located downtown, then moved to where the old outdoor swimming
pool was (near Parkview Place) and then to the 48 Avenue location. Since the Legion moved last year, the cenotaph has been in storage waiting for its new home. The monument will feature three pieces in a tribute to the veterans of the First World War, Second World War and several conflicts. The cenotaph is not only used for honouring those who lost their lives during the wars, or conflicts, but also on Remembrance Day, Decoration Day (last Sunday in August), the Battle of Atlantic in May, D-Day (June 6), Canada Day and any activity where the fallen are honoured. “It was truly a community project. The list of contributors is long with assistance from the City of Camrose, Camrose County, Battle River Community Foundation, Cam-
rose Branch #57, Royal Canadian Legion, Andreassen Borth Barristers and Solicitors, Battle River Implements, Kathryn and John Bratland, Burgar Funeral Home, Camrose Chrysler, Camrose and District Thrift Shop, Central Agencies, D & D Vehicle Sales, Dee-Jay Plumbing and Heating, Ken Drever, Farnham West Stolee LLP Barristers and Solicitors, Doug French, Marlene and Blain Fowler, Lamb Ford Sales, Mainstream Accounting, McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet, Paul Nielsen, Poppy Fund, Camrose Branch 57 Royal Canadian Legion, R & K Services, Re/Max Real Estate, Re-Tech Mfg., Shuman Insurance, Weber Funeral Home and Zetsen Master Builders. These people and businesses made it possible to make it an exciting celebration,” said Comrade Gislason.

Berg honours her birthday on the golf course
By Murray Green
Brandi Berg gave herself the best birthday gift on her special day. The new Camrose resident treated herself to a hole in one on number eight at Camrose Golf Course. Brandi used a seven iron to drive her ball 135 yards and score her first perfect shot. Happy Birthday Brandi on June 2. This was the second hole in one at the course this year, but the great shots kept coming. Vivian Sjolie of Camrose also nailed the perfect shot. She hit 110 yards with a nine iron on number four on June 5. This marked the second time Sjolie recorded a hole in one. Allison Curran of Beaumont had a hole in one on number four as well. He shot 165 yards using an eight iron on June 14. Bill Schulte of Camrose scored a hole in one on June 17. On spare hole number nine he shot 149 yards with an eight iron. This is his second hole in one.

Camrose Open Door doing good job of caring for youth and their families By Dan Jensen
The Camrose Open Door Association is doing a good job of taking care of youth and communicating their needs to the community says a recent survey by the association of its stakeholders. “All around fantastic organization,” said one of the survey respondents. “It is not often that you can find something like the Open Door in a city the size of Camrose.” About 65 (65.38) per cent of 26 respondents said that, from their experience, Open Door personnel are working very strongly to help clients be successful. Eighty-seven per cent (87.5) of 21 respondents rated their experience with the Open Door as excellent – better than most other similar agencies. Respondents praised Open Door Association staff for being solution focused and working to overcome challenges, their openness to changes to improve the effectiveness of the services and their willingness to work with those who have referred clients. “I have observed a common and regular message coming from Open Door staff that reiterates their mission statement through their words and actions,” said one. The Camrose Open Door Association bed races
were rated as an excellent or a good event by 69.23 per cent of respondents, while the harvest gala was rated as an excellent or good event by 56 per cent of respondents. Ninety per cent rated the association’s email newsletter as an excellent or good means of communication. Seventy-five per cent of the 66 respondents said that the association should continue what it is currently doing to raise awareness of youth issues and support to address those issues. About 70 (70.83) per cent said it should prepare a video, 33.33 per cent said it should share more client stories, 37.5 per cent said it should present more to churches, organizations and businesses, 20.83 per cent said it should host more tours of the housing facility, and 16.67 per cent said it should prepare a series of news releases. Suggestions for continuing to improve client services included coming up with stable sources of revenue and collaborating with other not-for-profits on events to share resources and cut down on costs. Sixty per cent of 25 respondents said they had donated personally to the Open Door in the past year (cash and or items), while 48 per cent said they had attended one or more Open Door event in 2014.
A bouquet was given to Open Door executive director Randal Nickel. “The Open Door, first and foremost, has an excellent leader in Randal,” said one in reply to the survey question, “What does the Open Door do well?” “With the current state of funding options and the constant battle to maintain stability in a not-for-profit, Randal manages to persevere, provide wisdom and support, and run a top-notch organization.” The Camrose Open Door Association’s goals for 2015 include helping 85 per cent of the youth who leave its housing to keep a safe place to live and employment for six months, meet the needs of an additional 30 youth by increasing outreach connections in the schools and other specific places in the community, and to provide housing to youth in the community (in one to three years) who do not fit within the shelter environment. Association staff member Lisa Kozak will be a visible presence at schools and in the community, while Wayne Wilson will be providing follow up employment and housing support. “All Camrose Open Door staff are highly visible in the community,” said Nickel.

Krich named provincial president By Murray Green
Peter Krich has, literally, more than one hat. The Camrose Fire Department fire chief was named the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association president in early June. Krich was on the Region 4 board that served Camrose and east for a number of years before serving as second vice chair of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association for four years. He was vice-chair on the provincial board for the past four years. “It was a natural progression throughout an organization that moved me up the board within the association working with projects for the organization. Our president had been in his position for six years and it was time for him to make a move,” explained Krich. “The natural progression of movement was to become president and the membership looked at that too. My name was put forth by the board and membership accepted that.” Typically, the term is for one year. “It’s like anything else: unless someone really wants the position, it may be for a longer period,” Krich joked. “It depends what projects are on the go. They might leave me in to finish something I’ve helped start.” One project that Krich has been very successful with was the May 3 to 9 Volunteer Firefighter Week. With the theme Answer The Call 2015, fire departments held several activities during the week targeted at raising the profile of volun-

teer firefighters in the community and encouraging others to join the ranks. “The program has been picked up nationally for next year, so we are very proud of that. In my position as president, it will be up to me to continue that progress to make sure that does happen,” the chief said. “Now I have a direct link and ties to the national committee. I will be on the national advisory council, which represents all of the provinces. There are a lot of exciting things coming down and it’s exciting for the membership to believe in me to work on those things.”
The recruitment and retention of firefighters program will be his main focus this year. “I want to see it through and take it from a provincial program to a national one. There are a number of other projects that we are working on. The medical first responder program working with Alberta Health Services and firefighters, and how we support each other,” explained Krich. “We are looking at stress and post traumatic incidents and how that relates to firefighters. We are trying to create a provincial contact list. It is for members that deal with
traumatic emergencies that create stress. We want to know how to help them.” The association is involved in ongoing work with commissions and other associations, as well as with the new provincial government. “I’ve met with the deputy minister of municipal affairs, so we have a link, even though we haven’t met with the government yet,” said Krich. “Once they are settled we will talk with them so they know where the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association stands on some issues and how the government can support our fire departments right across the province.” Krich said it will be an exciting year. He just came back from the British Columbia provincial conference to share Alberta’s news and meet that province’s national representative. “My whole career has been with Camrose. I have always focused on how to improve the Camrose Fire Department. I’ve taken ideas from what has worked in other places. Ever since I became a member of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, I’ve had a link and a tie to outside resources, education and people,” said Krich. “The advantage for Camrose now is that I will be in a position to represent Camrose provincially and nationally. What Camrose is doing is looked at by other fire services as well. I think it will be a positive to show how pro-active Camrose is in moving ahead.”
Elevator repairs have residents concerned By Dan Jensen
Seniors at Wildrose Villa have been feeling a little bit vulnerable since the commencement of work on their apartment building’s only elevator June 9. “It is creating quite the inconvenience,” said one Wildrose Villa resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “There are quite a few of us who are using walkers or have mobility issues so losing elevator access is making it difficult for us to put out garbage, pick up the mail or attend things like seniors’ meetings. “We are confined for most of the winter and now we are being confined in the summer as well.” The work is expected to be completed by Aug. 14. “The government has decided to give us money to fix (the elevator) because it is so old,” said Dennis Beesley, president of The Bethany Group, which manages the facility. “We are replacing it totally.”
The residents were surprised when they learned at the start of June that the work was about to begin. “There was a letter from the (Bethany Group) housing manager that was posted on the white board on the main floor down by the mailboxes saying that this was going to happen,” said the resident. “She (Bonnie Kotulsky) expressed the hope that the residents who have difficulty with the stairs would have friends and family around to assist with groceries and other things, and said she would do her best to help where she could.” The Bethany Group director of client services John Davis said there had been discussion with the residents ahead of time about the elevator closure. “I talked to Bonie yesterday and she said that she had dialogue with these people. There was a plan in place. I just don’t think the urgency was identified until the actual elevator stopped

working. We didn’t anticipate there was going to be a snag there.” The Bethany Group has offered interim accommodation to anyone who struggles with getting around. “We had a call from one resident who indicated she was going to struggle with the lift not working so we offered her another spot. We thought that things were in motion and that her needs were going to be met.” Maria Lobreau, director of Camrose Home Support Services, which provides services to Wildrose
Villa residents, expressed concern over the length of the time that the residents and the drivers who deliver meals through the Meals on Wheels program will be without service. “The repairs are going to take six weeks, which here is most of our summer. That’s a long stretch for those who aren’t able to get around very well.” Safety issues The disruption in elevator service has also raised some concerns about fire safety. Continued on page 25

David Hering …would like to express our heartfelt thank you to everyone who sent flowers, food and cards to the house and to the celebration of his life. Friends from near and far helped with the lunch and supper held at the house. The cards shared so many kind words and stories about David. There were many other aspects of caring that helped make the celebration a very special day. We received many calls of sympathy from those unable to attend who had us in their thoughts and prayers. Many had wonderful remembrances of David. Special thanks to Phyl, Yvonne, Marie, Randy and Cheryl, Tyler at Weber Funeral Home, Clair and family members plus many others. Thanks to all who attended the celebration of David’s life. Words cannot express the comfort in knowing so many cared and offered support. It meant so much and was truly appreciated. William James Miller June 16, 1923 - June 14, 2015 William “Bill” Miller of Camrose passed away Sunday, June 14, 2015, just two days shy of his 92nd birthday. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Bill joined the Canadian Army in 1943 and proudly served overseas as a tank driver with the 1st Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment (the infamous “Kangaroos”). Severely wounded while in action in Germany in 1945, Bill returned to Canada in 1946 and settled in Hanna, AB, lured by the burgeoning oil and gas industry. His Army training served him in good stead; as a civilian he worked as a heavy duty mechanic, welder and a cat-skinner doing excavation and road-building. Bill worked for various companies in the Hanna area, among them Hudson’s Bay Oil & Gas, Atlas Coal, Kirby Cartage and Grover Construction. In 1967, he moved his family to Camrose, working for Rudyk Construction, and once more in 1972 to Prince George, BC where he worked for RF Klein & Sons for 25 years until he finally retired and moved back to Camrose with his wife. In retirement, Bill was a gardener and active in his Regimental Veterans’ Association. Widowed in 2007, Bill was also diagnosed with dementia, but remained independent until 2010 when he moved to Bethany Meadows Continuing Care Centre in Camrose. Left to cherish his memory are his four children Janice (David) Steiner of Camrose, Bill (Melaine Kemp) of Calgary, Marylou (Trevor) Marshall of Dawson Creek, BC, and Phyllis Wagner of Dawson Creek, BC; one brother Roy (Ory); and two sisters Martha Jago and Irene Hall. Bill was predeceased by his wife Vivian (nee Sieppert); children Douglas and Chris; grandchild Crystal McLellan; and siblings August, Thomas, Paul and Danny. Bill’s family wishes to gratefully recognize the wonderful and caring staff at Bethany’s Spruce Cottage who always showed him great care, much affection and afforded him dignity and grace in his final days. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date from the Hanna Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to The Alzheimer Society of Canada. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Buffy da Silva ready for next chapter in her life By Murray Green
After many years of service and lots of good memories at the Camrose United Church, Buffy da Silva is leaving the community to open a new chapter in her life on Vancouver island. Music has always been an important part of Buffy’s life. From the time she was very young, it was evident that she had talent, along with a soft spot for others. Buffy began taking piano lessons when she was six years old and continued until completing her exams. She passed the Grade 10 Toronto Conservatory of Music (piano), Grade 3 Harmony and Grade 3 History of Music. “These were all held in the same month as I took my Grade 12 departmental exams to graduate from high school, so it was a very busy time,” recalled Buffy. “I was confirmed in the Camrose United Church in 1964 and was a member of the Junior Choir, along with my sister, Bonny. My parents, Edith and Gordon Hay, were members of the Senior Choir, so it was a family activity we all enjoyed.” She was in Grade 6 when her family moved to Alberta. A short time later they moved to Camrose where her father was the superintendent of schools with the County. “We (sister Bonny) grew up as teenagers in this community, so it was home for us,” Buffy said. She left Camrose in 1968 to attend the University of Calgary. She married, moved to Ontario and then back to Calgary to work for Esso Resources. When Esso downsized she took advantage of a package and went on holidays. “I spent three and a half months travelling around North America (five provinces and 24 states) in my car by myself,” she remem-

bered. “I saw all of the stuff that you usually fly over. I drove to Toronto and saw my sister. I wanted to go to a Toastmaster International convention in Atlanta, Georgia, so I toured in the time I had to get there by a certain date.” With another convention (not Toastmasters) planned for California, she spent more time touring and visiting friends around the event. “I returned to live in Camrose in 1991 when my elderly parents were needing assistance. After they had both passed away I got re-involved in the Camrose United Church, sensing a need in myself for involvement again in the spiritual life of a church community,” she explained. Her talents in music were immediately welcomed and she was asked to play for church services if the minister of music was away on occasion.
“I thought about just sitting in the ambience of the church with the beautiful stained glass windows with the spirit of God in the church in peace, but soon met lots of people and was renewed within the congregation,” said Buffy. “I got involved with a committee formerly known as Fellowship, which was renamed ConneXions. I have served on that committee for 12 years, being chair for the past seven years. Our committee’s mandate is provide opportunities for members of the congregation to connect in meaningful ways, to meet new people and develop new relationships in the church family.” Committee members for the past four years with Buffy as the chair include Margaret Wallace and Joyce Steiger. Before that, Joyce Lohner was on the committee until she passed away. ConneXions hosted many events such as Mardi
Gras Night, Games Night, Talent Show, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (plus a similar event for Augustana students), Bethany Meadows Mother’s Day Tea for United Church affiliated residents, Member Recognition and a celebration of the church’s anniversary in November each year for the past 10 years. “It is a great way to get to know people and broaden your experience in the church,” she said. “We put fun into being on the committee.” Along with the Membership Committee, ConneXions puts on a bi-annual Newcomers Welcome, inviting people who have recently become members, or adherents at Camrose United to have lunch and meet the ministers and committee members. “We hope they feel more welcome and get to know a bit more about the congre-
gation and our church in general,” said Buffy. Bob Walline and Jack Kamphorst had the responsibility of running the sound equipment for all the church services and funerals. It was an overwhelming job sometimes and Buffy volunteered to learn how to run the equipment and help out. “I’ve enjoyed sitting in the sound booth for many services and enhancing the message delivered from the pulpit,” she said. With the exception of the first year, she has been the ‘leader of the band’ for the Mad Hatters as they conduct a sing-along at the end of Risky Ribs night. “Alex Oliver tells me I’ve been doing this for eight years but, as it’s so much fun, I’ve lost track of the time. It’s a small commitment, but one I enjoy,” said Buffy. In 2014, she served on the Joint Search Committee to select a minister to replace Mary Ann Pastuck, who was retiring on June 30. Buffy was named chair of the committee at the first meeting (more by default than by desire) and worked diligently to locate and interview the best candidates for the position. The committee worked very well together and, within the desired time frame, chose Liz Carter-Morgan. “My dad used to say ‘Belong to something bigger than yourself.’ I am glad to belong to Camrose United Church and to offer my talents for use there. Everyone is so friendly and people always make you feel at home. You walk in and are met by greeters that make you feel so good that you decided to go to church. I am going to miss everyone when I move to Vancouver Island, but I know I am always welcome back and have a home in this congregation.”
Be careful with those who come knocking on your door By Dan Jensen
Camrose Police Service is encouraging residents to be careful in their dealings with people who come to their door selling a product or asking for a donation. “We want to remind people that individuals who are raising money for their organization have to have a not-for-profit licence that they must obtain from the City of Camrose,” said Camrose crime prevention officer Matthew Wilton. “If they are selling something they have to have a City of Camrose business licence.” Wilton recommends asking anyone who is looking for a donation how much of the money is actually going towards the cause. “You should be comfortable in knowing that all the money is going towards the
organization, and that the person who is on your step isn’t pocketing any of it,” said Wilton. Wilton also recommends continuing to stay alert even after the canvasser or salesperson shows his or her photo identification and name tag. “Photos and name tags are usually a pretty good indication that the person is for real but sometimes they are not,” he said. “There was an example a couple of years ago where people were going door to door just outside of Edmonton selling Tim Hortons gift cards as a way to collect money for (what they said) was the Canadian Cancer Society. People would buy $50 cards, only to find out later when they went to buy something, that there was nothing on them. The people had taken the gift
cards from the Tim Hortons store or wherever and had found Tim Hortons jackets that they wore to help with their sales pitch. Even scarier, they had an altered credit card machine and were stealing people’s credit card information.” Wilton advises against sharing information from gas or electricity bills with people who claim they are from a utility company. “Often what happens is they will look at your bill, get the information they need from it, whether it is an account or number or what have you, and actually switch things over from your current company to theirs without your permission,” he said. You need to be leery if they say they want to check your rate to see if they can provide you with a better one.”
Wilton said residents should never feel pressured to let anyone into their home. “A lot of alarm companies ask to come into your home and are quite pushy about it. My girlfriend was talking to someone from an alarm company who had come to the door last summer and all of a sudden he was in our front entry. She was trying to get him to leave, but he just talked his way in. Just let people know that the house is yours and remember that you can ask them to leave. At the end of the day he or she is still a stranger and you don’t know what his or her true motivation might be.” Wilton said people who use their credit card to make a donation are opening themselves up to a host of problems.
“If you are going to donate to what you feel is a good cause give cash. You might lose what you have given them (if they are conducting a scam) but you will just have lost that money once. You are not giving them something that they can access more than one time.” Anyone who has concerns about door-to-door salespeople or canvassers is encouraged to call the Camrose Police Service at 780-672-4444. “We will ask the caller what the person is wearing, the last known direction of the person’s travel, and what they are selling or raising money for,” said Wilton. “Sometimes we can locate them and do our own checks.”

It brings up mental health problems that come about from being isolated for long periods of time. “If residents can’t get in and out easily, which I suspect is the case for a number of them, they may be at higher risk of depression or anxiety or other difficulties that can
result from isolation,” said Family Violence Action Society program director Sheralyn Dobos. “They also become more vulnerable to predators who could be intent on doing them harm.” One of the residents noted that if there was a fire she would have to go down the stairs sitting down, one step at a time.
Doing what it can Beesley said he feels for the residents and their difficulties. “We will be doing whatever we can to help them. We are going to ensure that the vulnerable residents – those who cannot use the stairs adequately or properly – don’t get left behind.”

On the Other Hand… Our wonderful watershed By Ryley Corcoran
THE MOST HAUNTING SOUND ON EARTH
It wasn’t on my “bucket list” but on our grandparent trip to San Jose and San Francisco, my granddaughter Kenzie suggested we visit Alcatraz. Our schedule was loosely structured, and so we were off to Alcatraz Island. The stories of this escape proof island federal penitentiary are legend, and its former residents are a who’s who of the most notorious criminals of their era. (Not sure why Kenzie thought I should go?) We were introduced to the tour, and elected the headset self-guided tour option. We saw the exercise yard (from which inmates could view San Francisco and get an even heightened sense of their imprisonment); the laundry; the shower and toilet area; the mess hall; the hospital; solitary confinement; the cellblocks, the guardhouse and the morgue. The age of the prison, and the fact it had not been actively used for years, contributed to the sense of decay and hopelessness. (I felt it and I had in my hand a ferry ticket to return to San Francisco whenever I choose, as I had tickets to take Kenzie to a Giants ballgame that afternoon.) At various points we caught up with groups who were a part of a guided tour. We could take off our headsets and listen to the guide. At one such point, the guide was demonstrating the locking/unlocking mechanism housed in one of the guardhouses. It was, for its day, an engineering marvel of gears and levers. The guard could lock and unlock an individual cell, a defined set of cells, or the entire cellblock. After explaining the workings of the lockdown mechanism, and demonstrating a few variations of the locking and unlocking (think opening and closing the cells); the guard made an interesting request. He asked the crowd of tourists to stop moving, talking and taking pictures. He wanted us to be as quiet as possible. He systematically opened the groupings of cells until every cell door was opened. With one last appeal for quiet he announced; “Now I want you to hear the most haunting sound on earth.” After a brief pause for dramatic effect, he shouted. “Rack ’em!” He then pulled the largest lever in the guardhouse and every cell door in the entire cellblock slammed closed simultaneously. The sound rattled my bones and my nerves. It sounded so final, so absolute, so confining – it clearly defined the futility being faced by the prisoners at Alcatraz. Before putting on my headset to continue my self-guided tour, I took a moment to reflect. I realized that there was an even more haunting sound. I know that I have heard that sound, and I fear that I may have made that sound. That sound is the imprisoning word of discouragement that denies the potential to be found in each of us. That sound is the negativity that cripples the possibility to be found in each of us. That sound is the selfishness that values our own growth and progress over and above the growth and progress of others. On the one hand, I hold the lever and the opportunity to yell “Rack ‘em!” and to imprison those around me. On the other hand, I hold a ticket to the ferry to get off of Alcatraz Island. As I boarded the ferry to freedom from Alcatraz later that day, I determined I would rather be a ferry boat operator. Which hand will you choose to play in the lives of others?
Those in attendance at the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society’s event last Thursday, found themselves involved in an engaging evening full of information and thoughtful discussions. The event was run by Susanna Bruneau, of the Battle River Watershed. Susanna started off by providing an overview of what the Battle River Watershed does, who its associate partners are, and why its presence is of importance to us. She discussed the consequences of having a prairie fed water system and how the allocation of this water is of significant concern. Many people were surprised to learn that, in times of drought, certain licenses can call seniority over others, meaning that they can take what they are allocated
before another license does. Susanna demonstrated this idea by playing a short game with those that were present. In this game, attendees were given different roles in the community such as industry, municipal, recreation, commercial, agriculture and others. The amount of water that they were allowed to take from a shared pool was based off of their role. With each role they also had to ensure that a portion of what they took to use was able to return back to the watershed when they were done. Through the game it quickly became evident that the licenses each role has are not equal. This game also shone a bit of light on the difference between allocation and consumption. Allocation was what different groups were allowed to take, but
included what would end up back in the water system when they were done with it; water used for cooling at power plants would be a part of allocation. Consumption was what would not end up back in the water system. This would include water that we drink. This game sparked a lot of questions for those that had not fully considered the inequity of water allocation, and Susanna provided a lot of answers as to why it is this way. Following the game, and before wrapping up, the evening progressed into a further discussion of allocation, water quality and the importance of significant and protected areas. A big thank you goes out to Susanna for putting on the fantastic program.
KIDS FACTORY RIBBON CUTTING
Mayor Norm Mayer cut a ribbon June 11 to officially open Kids’ Warehouse, a downtown Camrose business at 4912-50 Street that carries brand name and value priced produces for babies, kids and moms. Joining the mayor were, left to right, City councillor PJ Stasko, staff member Ally Larson, Downtown Camrose Development manager Al Walkey, owner Kristine Smith, Downtown Camrose Development president Michael Wetsch, Downtown Camrose Development board representative Jessica Puddicombe, owner Debbie Thompson, Camrose Historic Main Street Society coordinator Janet Hatch, City councillor Agnes Hoveland and City of Camrose economic development coordinator Ray Telford.
Competitors Take No Bull Putting an end to family violence is no small feat. Fitting then, that the feature creature of a local fund- and awareness-raising event for that purpose is a massive Brahma-cross steer named Wild West Willie. The third annual Take No Bull campaign is organized by Family Violence Action Society to help men, women and children who are striving to create lives free of violence and abuse. “Demand for our services is at an all-time high with group programs and individual counselling service stretched to capacity,” says Sheralyn Dobos, program director. “We’re seeing increasing numbers of people who are required to come to us, but also a growing number who recognize their relationships aren’t healthy or their anger is causing problems.” Whether required or vol-
untary, services are available for people who want to stop reoccurring cycles of abuse. Contestants compete by raising funds for the honour of riding Wild West Willie, a 2,800-pound Brahma-cross steer, in the July 30 Big Valley Jamboree Parade. Prizes for runners up include Kickoff tickets to Big Valley Jamboree donated by Panhandle Productions, and Spring Classic Rodeo tickets donated by Camrose Regional Exhibition. Contestants can register and raise funds until July 24. Funds raised will help sustain individual counseling services for children, women and men impacted by family violence, as well as group programs for men and women wanting to end abuse in their homes or learn to manage their own anger that affects other aspects of their lives. “While the Take No Bull
campaign is intended to provide some good-natured fun and entertainment, the enduse of the funds is much more serious. The campaign will help to generate much-needed funds to keep our services available,” adds Dobos. Family Violence Action Society has provided group and individual services since 1996 to assist individuals and families to reduce the impact and occurrence of violence and abuse. Additionally, this registered charity serves a coordinating role through the Family Violence Response Council (FVRC) with about a dozen community agencies and organizations that collaborate for awareness-raising, staff training and networking opportunities. 2015 Ford Edge A showcase of innovation Craig Beddoes
By Dan Jensen
The 2015 Edge at Lamb Ford Sales is a showcase of innovation. From a new design that excites to technology features that comfort, the all-new Edge sets a benchmark for Ford utility vehicles. Available driverassist technologies include enhanced active park assist, adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, an 180 degree front camera with washer, standard rear camera, glove boxmounted airbag system, inflatabe rear safety belts and Ford’s unique handsfree liftgate. Body and suspension The 2015 Edge delivers the confident, smooth driving experience customers expect from Ford. “The all-new Edge has been remade in every single detail – always keeping in mind the customer who expects something distinctive and powerful,” said Lamb Ford Sales sales manager Brett Read. “With a structure more rigid than ever and a suspension tuned to the highest global standards, the 2015 Edge is a hightech utility that delivers a special driving experi-
ence customers will fee from their initial moments behind the wheel.” The front and rear suspension has been resdesigned to better isolate road imperfections and absorb noise without compromising handling. Steering feel is improved 30 per cent, with parking effort reduced by 30 per cent thanks in part to the new electric powerassisted steering. Two new engines The all-new Ford Edge features three engine options, two of which are new powerplants – a standard twin scroll 2.0 litre EcoBoost four-cylinder and a 2.7 litre EcoBoost V6. A naturally aspirated 3.5 litre V6 engine is available. The twin-scroll 2.0 litre EcoBoost, making 245 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque, is significantly improved over the previous 2.0 litre EcoBoost. Beyond efficiency advantages, the new engine provides more capability. Edge equipped with the 2.0 litre EcoBoost can be ordered with newly available all-wheel-drive and a towing package capable of hauling a 3,500 pound trailer. A lighter engine block
casting, along with new aluminum balance shaft assembly, shaves six pounds from the engine’s gravitational weight. Fuel economy ratings are still among the best in the segment. The 2.7 litre EcoBoost engine provides an exceptional combination of power and efficiency. The new V6 delivers a small increase in horsepower over the previous 3.7 V6 and a 25 per cent increase in torque for a total of 315 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. All three Edge engines are mated to Ford’s SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission featuring standard paddle-shift activation, giving drivers the ability to manually select gears via race-inspired paddles on the steering wheel. The SelectShift transmission features two modes of operation – drive and sport. Sport mode offers a more aggressive shift pattern, allowing the engine to rev higher during acceleration and hold lower gears longer to support spirited, fast paced sessions. The intelligent allwheel-drive system for
the Edge is on demand and seamless – there are no knobs or switches to activate. An electronically controlled clutch, which can engage faster than a human can blink, transfers power between front and rear axles, sending up to 100 per cent of the power to the front or the rear. Technology Active grille shutters help improve aerodynamics, particularly at highway speeds. Adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support uses radar to detect moving vehicles directly ahead and change the cruising speed if necessary. The Blind Spot Information System users radar to trigger a warning when another motorist is in the driver’s blind spots. Cross-traff ic alert uses radar to help alert drivers to oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space. Forward and reverse sensing systems provide audible alerts designed to help drivers avoid obstacles when parking. A simple kick motion
below the centre of the rear bumper allows customers to unlock and raise the tailgate. An active glove box knee airbag uses glove box front to cushion the knees of the front passenger in a crash. AdvaceT rac w ith Roll Stability Control uses sensors to measure the roll rate of the vehicle and predict its roll angle. Based on this information and measurements from other vehicle dynamics sensors, the system can adjust engine torque and brake pressure at all four wheels to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle. Curve Control uses the same sensors as Roll Stability Control to detect and measure roll rate, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, wheel speed and steering wheel angle to help drivers follow their intended path by slowing the vehicle more efficiently while maneuvering a curve. You can see the 2015 Ford Edge at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-6722411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

The Chuck MacLean Creative Arts Summer Program prides itself on providing children with fun, creativity and excitement every summer. The program will be offered from July 3 to Aug. 21 during the week from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. With prior arrangements, children can stay until 5 p.m. The program has two leaders that will be guiding children on many adventures and learning experiences. “Each year we come up with new themes and activities for children. We try and make it fun, so it is exciting every year,” said Marissa Tollefson, assistant summer arts coordinator, who is a business management student at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. Marissa is working with Kassandra Stanton, summer arts coordinator for the program. “This year we have a Hogwarts day, which I am extremely excited about. It will be a lot of fun with a potions class, Horcrux Hunt and a Quidditch tournament,” she explained. “I wanted to be a part of the summer arts program because it is fun and anything to do with project management helps me gain experience.” Some of the other planned events include medieval day, dinosaur day, school of rock, super heroes, spray park and wild wild west to watch the parade. “We will be working with the Camrose Public Library on some days, going to the museums and going to the spray park for activities,” she added. “This is a drop-in program, so you don’t have to feel that your children have to attend every day. You can drop your children off for the day. They can attend every day or whichever days work for the family,” explained Marissa. “It can be one day, or the entire summer. The program is pretty flexible. Sometimes the family goes on vacation, so they miss a week. It all depends on the family schedule.” The leaders looked at last year’s schedule and put together events that don’t Client: CHRYSLER CANADA rely on exact numbers for the Project: JUNE 2015 DAA ROC RETAIL NEWSP activity. Are you ready? ✔ Bags packed ✔ Dog at the kennel ✔ Grass cut
By Murray Green
After losing the first two games of the season, the Camrose Axemen have responded with a seven game winning streak. The Axemen edged the Sherwood Park Athletics 7-6 on June 16 to grab first place in the North Central Alberta Baseball League. Camrose beat the Stony Plain Mets 5-2 on June 10. Riley Guntrip and Kris Kushnerick each pounded out three hits to lead the attack on offence. Pitcher Blair Mulder pitched six solid innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Kyle Muzechka tossed one inning of relief, allowing one hit while striking out one. In a pitcher’s duel, Camrose clipped the Edmonton Indians 2-1 on June 2. Dylan Borman pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits and walking four, while striking out five. The Axemen host the rival Edmonton Blackhawks on June 24 at Kin Park’s Harry Andreassen Field beginning at 7:15 p.m. It could be a battle for first place. The teams met in the playoff finals last season. Other home games for the Axemen are on July 8, 14, and a doubleheader on 19. The final home game is slated for Aug. 12. Action for the home doubleheader on Sunday begins at 1:30 p.m.

Jeremy Olesen captures Jaywalker’s Jamboree Bowl for the Green title in back to back years…
The Camrose Booster publisher Blain Fowler with Jeremy Olesen, displaying the ball he used to earn the title of 2015 Bowl for the Green Champion and the corresponding $1,000 prize.
Accepting the cheque for $4,406 (total revenue from Bowl for the Green this year) is Battle River Vikings Volleyball Club Treasurer Lisa Brown and President Kim Wildeman. Handing over the cheque is Ron Pilger (left), Associate Publisher/Sales Manager of The Camrose Booster and Angie Arksey (second from left), Retail Manager, Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre.
Bowl for the Green, the entertaining and popular annual Jaywalkers’ Jamboree event made possible by Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre and The Camrose Booster, drew another record crowd this year. It also boasts a record-setting performance by a Camrose bowler. During the two-day event, at least 13, 218 balls were lofted, heaved, pitched or strategically rolled down the lengthy and unforgiving course. At the far end of the temporary bowling alley were ambitious volleyball players, moms, dads and supporters of Battle River Vikings Volleyball program, serving as bowling ball retrievers all day Friday and Saturday. Ninety finalists, who each earned the title by scoring a 100’ strike over the course of the two-day event, advanced to the 4:15 roll-off on Saturday afternoon. Among the finalists were several bowlers who had previously claimed the JWJ Bowl for the Green title during previous competitions. With the help of a healthy audience of fans, family and friends, Round 1 of the bowl-off came and went without a ball disappearing through one of the four distant holes. Bowlers moved ahead by roughly ten feet each time for Rounds 2 and 3. But all balls rolled missed the elusive mark. Another ten feet further down the course and Round 4 got underway. Despite a variety of great shoots and near misses, there was only one ball which disappeared out of sight through the tiny hole during the final round of intense action. That ball belonged to Jeremy Olesen, who had had plenty of paid practice and his name on the finalist sheets five times during Jaywalkers Jamboree 2015. Even more remarkable was that Jeremy brought with him the title of 2014 Bowl for the Green Champion! For his fine performance, Jeremy was awarded $1,000 to spend at Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre or, alternatively, any business which advertised in the June 2nd edition of The Super Booster. For their fine work retrieving balls during over 19-1/2 hours of bowling, Battle River Vikings Volleyball Club was awarded $4,406 – all revenue from this year’s Bowl for the Green.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Highway accident claims two drivers By Murray Green
Two motorists are dead following a two vehicle collision on Highway 13, one kilometre east of Highway 21 on June 21. A west bound Ford F250 with a male driver and female passenger was struck by an east bound Dodge Ram 3500. Camrose RCMP responded approximately 6:45 p.m. The 25-year-old male driver of the Dodge was pronounced dead on scene. The 42-year-old male driver of the Ford was also killed on impact. His female passenger was transported by STARS air ambulance to hospital in Edmonton. The RCMP collision analyst, Camrose Fire Department, EMS, Wetaskiwin Traffic Services and Camrose Police Services were also on scene assisting. The 16-year-old female passenger is in stable condition in hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, RCMP reported on June 22. RCMP believe there is a female witness to the collision and is seeking their assistance. If you have any information about the accident contact the Camrose RCMP at 780-672-3342. The highway was closed for
about five hours. The matter is still under investigation. June 11
A local campground called to report that a money box had been stolen. The box was left for campers to pay for their camping sites. It is unknown how much money was in the box. June 12
A resident in Armena called to report what was believed to be the sound of explosives. Neighbours were contacted and they confirmed hearing the same sound. The sound was not recognized to be that of fireworks or gun shots. Police made patrols but were unable to hear the sound again or locate any suspicious activity. June 13
RCMP assisted the County with an intoxicated individual who was using County equipment to load his gravel truck without permission from the pit or the County. The individual was uncooperative and violent with police and was subsequently arrested. This matter is still under investigation. RCMP also responded to three false alarm calls, eight reports of dangerous/ impaired driving, three animal related collisions and two calls under the Mental Health Act.
