BRCF making impact on people’s lives By Dan Jensen Battle River Community Foundation public relations committee chair and board secretary Karin Naslund gave three examples at the BRCF open house June 18 of how the Foundation is having an impact on the lives of real people. “In May, I was part of a conversation with Dave Chamberlain, Centra Cam board chair, and learned the impact of a grant given to the Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot,” said Naslund, adding that Centra Cam has received Foundation grants totalling just over $65,000. “He identified the grant allowed them to staff the depot for four months, which served the needs of 200 people each month. Eight hundred people had their basic needs met thanks to that grant. Where would they be without your generosity?” The Family Violence Action Society received a $3,000 grant plus flow through funds of $160, which, along with other resources, were used to treat 29 children and offer a six week anger management group counselling program at PACE School. “I remember the impact of this application on our committee,” said Naslund. “They asked for $1,000 to assist in decreasing their wait list for counselling for children experiencing abuse from 11 children to three.” The Foundation chose to increase the amount of the grant so all children could receive the necessary counselling. The Camrose Open Door Association has received Foundation grants totalling $115,440, including one for $5,000 in 2001, for operating support. “At a recent function where the proceeds were going to the Camrose Open Door I heard a gentleman scoff, ‘There are no homeless people in Camrose,’” said Naslund. “The place was busy and I tried to make my way over to that person, but to my dismay he was gone by the time I reached that area. Those words struck in my heart as I wished them to be true, but I knew they were a common misconception. The Open Door has been in existence in Camrose for 15 years and its need is real. Homelessness is one of the biggest “at risk” qualifiers for anyone, let alone youth between the ages of 11 and 24, and yes, there are homeless people in Camrose. I do realize that you can drive around this beautiful city for hours and not see one cardboard box with a blanket...not one corner of the street that is littered with ‘derelict beings’ bundled up or asleep on benches...not one soup kitchen where there’s an out the door lineup. Because we don’t see these things doesn’t mean they do not exist. There are many youth in our city that by circumstance alone find themselves at risk and in need of help. Even though we may not see homelessness and at risk youth in the same capacity as other cities doesn’t mean we don’t have these issues: we do. Just ask one of the 48 youth who needed shelter services last year.”

HAIRCUT FOR CANCER

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Rebecca Jacobson of Camrose had eight inches of her locks cut in a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society and the program Pantene Beautiful Lengths for cancer patient wigs. It takes between nine and 15 pony tails to make a wig. Rebecca thought someone needed her hair more than she did and was looking for a change in hair style on June 18 at Evolve. The money the Augustana student is collecting for cutting her hair is going to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Rebecca is hoping to donate $1,500. Hair donations must be at least eight inches in length.

BRCF has been a force for good in community By Dan Jensen

The Battle River Community Foundation has become an incredible force for good in the community. In the twenty years it has been in existence, the Foundation has granted almost three million, including six hundred and eighty thousand in 2014 alone, to support worthwhile projects in the Battle River Community. “Judy Larson, a director of the BRCF, recently attended a three-day meeting of community foundations from across Canada,” said BRCF board chair Blain Fowler at the Foundation’s twentieth anniversary open house June 18. “She reported that representatives from other community foundations were astounded by our progress and also that we seem to be the benchmark to which other foundations are compared.” The total value of endowments with the Foundation at the end of 2014 was ten million four hundred thousand. “In 2014 we received

nine hundred and twelve thousand from 920 unique donors,” said Fowler. “We now have established two hundred and eighty-nine named funds, twenty-eight of those in the last year alone. This is a ten per cent increase, indicating a very healthy donor buy-in and confirming that community spirit is alive and well throughout the area we serve. It also tells us that we are a long way from tapping out the supply of potential donors.” Fowler explained BRCF has come to be recognized as the major charity of choice throughout the community it serves because of the commitment and skills of its board members, its personalized approach to personal philanthropy that allows endowment funds to be established in a variety of formats to address the specific needs and wishes of donors, and its proven record of prudent financial management. He noted BRCF was the first community foundation to top-up endowment funds equiva-

lent to the increase in the cost price index of the province in the previous year, thereby ensuring that all funds, regardless of age, would always retain the equivalent value as at their day of inception. “Our policy to deal with value erosion due to inflation in this manner,” he said, “has since been adopted by many other community foundations.” Any amount welcomed While many other foundations try to zero-in on a few large donors, the BRCF policy has always been to welcome donations of any amount at any time. “Our broad donor base has paved the way for wide acceptance and recognition of the endowment concept,” said Fowler. “Rather than spending the entire donated amount in the initial year, foundations invest it, distributing net earnings each year and leaving the principal intact, to keep on earning. This wasn’t an easy sell in our early years, but now it is really starting to come into its own.

People now understand that delayed gratification is a proven long-term financial strategy. Twenty years on, our nest-egg is capable of kicking-off truly significant earnings, and in turn delivering big dollars back to the Battle River community in accordance with the wishes of donors.” New programs Fowler touched on two new programs that have been launched by the Foundation this year. The “Forever Remembered” program, offered in partnership with the funeral directors of the area, has the Foundation, if named by the family as the preferred charity, hold all memorial gifts for ninety days before the family needs to decide what it would like the Foundation to do with the resulting sum. “We can either flow funds directly to the charity or charities of choice or launch a new fund in the name of the departed in support of any charitable cause that was closest to that person’s heart,”

said Fowler. “Using this approach, the family is not forced into making a quick decision at a time of major stress, but can give the matter due care and thought at a later, less stressful time.” The second initiative captures the experience and goodwill of retiring board members by naming them as “Ambassadors” of the Foundation. Fowler challenged everyone at the open house to be a Foundation ambassador. “We are not asking you to be crusaders to the point that you become a nuisance and alienate all your friends and relatives,” he said. “All we ask is that you put in a good word for the Foundation whenever the opportunity arises to do so. Each person has a circle of acquaintances he or she can influence. More than any fancy brochure, promotional piece or website could ever do, your testimonial can be most compelling. Please consider yourselves all to be honorary ambassadors for the Battle River Community Foundation.”

Chichkin moves on to university hockey By Murray Green

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Layne and Tyler Weber of Weber Funeral Home donated $2,200 worth of restoration of the Second World War bronze plaque to Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion cenotaph committee chair Ragnar Gislason and president Bob Burt. The restored plaque will be installed at the new cenotaph near the Camrose and District Centennial Museum prior to Canada Day and the unveiling dedication at 11:45 a.m. on July 1.

Valik Chichkin has announced his move to Simon Fraser University for next fall. The former Camrose Kodiaks defenceman graduated from junior hockey in the spring. “We are excited to hear

School’s Out for Summer! Students of Battle River School Division left their classrooms on Friday, June 26 and won’t be returning until Tuesday, September 1. Please watch for them in the playgrounds, parks and streets. Let’s make this summer a safe and happy one! Summer hours are in effect. All schools are closed until Wednesday, August 26. Division Office is open Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (with the exception of statutory holidays July 1 and August 3).

that Valik has made a decision to play at SFU. When he arrived here at the deadline we were excited at his skill level as a player. I wish we would have had more time to develop him as he has great potential,” said Boris Rybalka, Kodiaks general manager and coach. “Valik has a great personality and was a pleasure to coach and teach.” The Kodiaks organization congratulated Valik’s decision. “We will be watching closely as Valik embarks on his university hockey career and we know that he will be a huge asset to SFU.” Main camp for the next edition of the Kodiaks will start on Saturday, Aug. 22. The exhibition season begins on Thursday, Aug. 27 for the Kodiaks with a pre-season tournament from Aug. 27 to the 29 at the EnCana Arena. The Kodiaks’ annual golf tournament is on Sunday, Aug. 30 starting at 9 a.m. on the Camrose Golf Course.

Community mailboxes on the way By Dan Jensen

The way that Camrosians receive their mail is about to change. Canada Post has informed City of Camrose officials that it will cease making door to door deliveries in 2016 to 5,077 addresses starting with the postal code T4V. “This is part of a fiveyear initiative to convert one-third of Canadian addresses, which still have delivery at the door to community mailboxes in an effort to secure postal service for the future,” said Canada Post media relations manager Carly Smith. “Since the program began in 2014, one million addresses have been, or are in the various stages of the conversion process.” Canada Post will be using resident surveys to help determine where the mailboxes should go. “This is something we have done since the beginning of the process,” said Smith. “So far 260,000 Canadians have shared their insights through this survey, which has proven to be very useful in choosing safe and suitable locations.” Discussions underway City of Camrose administration has had initial discussions with Canada Post regarding the mailbox placements. “It was definitely an initial meeting that we had with them,” said infrastructure and planning acting general manager Jeremy Enarson in a discussion with Camrose City council June 1. “There was really no intent to finalize locations. It was more to say this is the direction we are going and we would like to have ongoing discussions.” Enarson anticipates that the survey will show that most residents want the mailboxes to be close to, but not in front of their property. “Everybody would like it close and everyone would like to have it right in front of their neighbour’s house,” he said. The City would be able to accommodate Canada Post’s wishes to have the mailboxes close to intersections as long as they are not too close as to impede visibility of traffic. Anyone who has concerns about the ability to access his or her community mailbox will be invited to contact Canada Post via a dedicated phone number. No job losses No regular or part-time employee will lose his or her job as a result of the initiative. Canada Post will reduce its workforce largely through attrition as people retire.

Screen Test comes to Camrose July 7 Continued from page 9

“Thousands of Albertans are alive and healthy today because they were able to find signs of cancer early when treatment can be the most successful. When you consider that one in eight women in Alberta will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime,

breast cancer screening is one of the most important things you’ll ever do for yourself.” Alberta Health Services recommends that women between the ages of 50 and 74 have screening mammograms every two years, or as determined by themselves and their health care provider. Women 40 to 49 and

75 and over should speak with their health care provider to determine their breast cancer risk and if screening mammograms are needed. More information about the Screen Test mobile program or about booking an appointment may be obtained by calling toll-free 1-800667-0604.

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Magna Carta

Malone’s guest editorial (“800 Privileged Years”; June 9/15) begs a reflective response that challenges his premise that the Magna Carta has categorically, in Canada, provided the “finest political practice that exists in the world today.” King John, in 1215, put his seal on the Magna Carta under duress, to avoid civil war. He later reneged on that agreement. Despite this, the Magna Carta survived and was subsequently respected throughout much of the world. The United States, for example, venerates and respects the Magna Carta, yet, that has not translated into Magna Carta rights for African Americans. Nor does the proposed Bill C-45 translate into Magna Carta rights for Canadians. Canada’s Aboriginals have not benefited from Canada’s interpretation of the Magna Carta either, as verified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report. The former PC government in Alberta has moreover created legislation (e.g. Carbon Capture and Storage Act; the Alberta Land Stewardship Act/ALSA, and the Land Assembly Project Area Act) that make a mockery of those hard-won rights of the English feudal barons. Alberta legislation actually obliterates, and violates, the democratic rights that this ancient harbinger guaranteed British citizens. Even though this 800-year-old harbinger of democracy elsewhere has guaranteed those rights for centuries, Alberta’s recent legislation contradicts the Magna Carta rights and strips Albertans of both our democratic and property rights. Instead of guaranteeing Albertans those ancient charter rights that stipulated “no free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possession, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way… except by the lawful judgment of his equals,” under the PC’s Land Stewardship Act a Minister has the power to rescind/ extinguish property rights, acquire, and use private property for a “public project.” And in the case of a land ownership dispute and/or a disagreement, if in the minister’s “opinion” a landowner “is doing, or “is about to do any act or thing…directed toward committing an offense” to protect his/her rights and/or property, the minister has the power to “take whatever measure the minister considers necessary to carry out the terms of the enforcement order. The Alberta landowner still has no recourse to an independent hearing, or “the lawful judgment of his equals” guaranteed by the Magna Carta, because the Alberta Land Stewardship Act prevents Albertans having recourse to the courts. REFLECTIONS

Letters Continued from page 11

by Bonnie Hutchinson July 1 Eve

On the eve of July 1, I’m thinking about my mom, Berdie Fowler. Her birthday was July 1. As I was growing up, we made jokes about how nice it was that across the country, Canadians celebrated her birthday. It wasn’t until after Mom died that one of her granddaughters told me something else. In one of their visits in the last months of Mom’s life, my mom told her granddaughter about birthdays as a child. When my mom was a little girl growing up in the East Bittern Lake district, there was always a community picnic on July 1. There were ball games and sack races and all of that, and wonderful picnic food, and even fireworks. As a little girl, my mom thought the party was for her! When I heard that, I thought, “What a wonderful thing for a child to believe – that the whole world (or at least her whole world) is celebrating her.” *** Flashback. Mom is in a hospital bed after some kind of “heart incident.” Because of her condition, she’s in a room that’s visible from the nursing station. Not much privacy. The room is used for other things too. Equipment of various kinds is sitting around. There doesn’t seem to be a bedside table, or a place to hang clothes. I’m looking around thinking it’s not exactly a hospitable environment. Mom is weaker than I’ve ever seen her. She’s lying with her eyes closed, resting. She cannot lift her head up. For the first time in my life, it occurs to me that she’s fragile. She turns her head to me and says, “I’ve been lying here thinking about how much love there is in the world, and how kind people are.” Then she looks me right in the eye and says, “And I know you worry about not visiting enough. You don’t have to worry. I know you love me. You don’t have to tell me. And I hope you know I love you. I hope everybody knows I love them.” *** On July 1, I’ll be spending the day with about three-quarters of my mom’s descendants – those who can get to Camrose on that day. Most of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even two great-great-grandchildren will be there. Cousins who only see each other once a year (especially the cousins who live in Singapore) will reconnect. We’ll have the annual killer soccer game. Now that the little guys have grown into teenagers and young adults, the game is a lot tougher for the adults! And I know that, as I have in previous years, there will be moments when I look around and marvel how our little family of two grown-ups and four kids has grown. The little girl at the East Bittern Lake picnic would not have imagined this. It’s precious time indeed. *** When I look back at my own life, and look forward, I could not have imagined. Perhaps that’s true for all of us. I think it would be a better world if all of us believed that the whole world is celebrating us because we are so special. Happy Canada Day! *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

Kind hearted actions On June 8 Const. Woodall of the Edmonton Police Service was killed performing his duties as a police officer. This tragedy affects all front line responders. As an organization with close ties and strong relationships with the Edmonton Police Service, we at the Camrose Police Service were impacted as well. On the day of Const. Woodall’s funeral, police officers from Camrose were honoured to march in the procession and to take over traffic and security duties, thereby allowing Edmonton officers to attend the services. On the days leading up to the funeral our organization was humbled by the outpouring of compassion we heard and saw from the citizens of Camrose. From the f lags at half mast, to the f lowers and treats dropped off, to the anonymous tearful phone call simply saying “thanks for doing what you do,” your compassion and empathy was truly felt and appreciated. Please know that your kind hearted actions and support helped all of us through an emotional experience. D.L. Kambeitz, Chief of Police Personal apology I am writing this letter with the sincere hope that City councillor Sears and the rest of the council will accept my personal apolog y from the remarks made by me about the bus offered to the Rose City Handi-van Society. I should have said the statement from Councillor Sears was an “offer” rather than a “bribe.” I truly regret any hard feelings this may have caused. The City of Camrose council works hard to provide services to its citizens as does the Rose City Handi-van Society with the help of the City. Iris Baker, president, Rose City Handi-van Society

Arnold Reuben Naslund August 19, 1928 – June 22, 2015 Arnold was born on August 19, 1928 to Swedish immigrants Johann and Hildur Naslund, the second youngest of eight children. Arnold was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Wilhelmina Lutheran Church. He grew up on the family farm just east of Hay Lakes and, as a young man, he met and married the love of his life and the center of his world – Margaret Forsen. They were married in 1955 and took over the family farm and remained there until their retirement in 1990, at which time they moved to Camrose. They began their family in 1956 with the birth of their first daughter Barbara and, two years later, a son Gordon. Then more additions to the family arrived with daughter Bonnie in 1963, and the baby of the family, June, who was born in June 1966. So, now the family was complete and life on the farm was busy with raising pigs, chickens, cattle and grain. Although farming was Arnold’s livelihood, his true passion was in carpentry. Every family member’s household has numerous pieces of furniture made by Arnold. He enjoyed his woodworking shop at the farm and, when they moved to Camrose, he continued with his hobby where half the garage became a carpenter’s cove complete with walls and floor covered in tools bought over a lifetime. He built numerous kitchen cabinets for surrounding neighbours (including those in Wilhelmina Church), as well as coffee tables, curio cabinets, TV stands, china cabinets, dressers and many types of toys for his family and grandchildren. One of his greatest builds was the grandfather clock that took great time and precision – a family heirloom. Anything that could be made from wood – even some things that you would not think could be made from wood – Arnold made it. All his children and grandchildren have something made by Dad and Grandpa. Arnold had a quiet but quick wit which continued with him until his last days. While in the hospital, the technician was connecting his ECG and Arnold said to her, “They brought me in for my leg (broken hip), but they are trying to fix my heart.” He enjoyed reading history and did this often, and looked forward to receiving many books for birthdays and Father’s Day. Dad complained little and had no regrets. Arnold passed away peacefully in his sleep late Monday night, on June 22, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Margaret; one son Gordon and his wife Joan and their three boys Derrick, Jonathan and Austin; daughter June and her daughter Jacqueline; his other grandchildren Brenda, Charlene, Brian, Marie and Brittany; his great-grandchildren Ariel, Nora, Elsa and Axel; his brother-in-law Glen and his wife Betty Forsen; sister Sylvia and her husband Hilbert Lechelt; sister Alphid Sims; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter Bonnie in March 1994 at the age of 30; and Barbara in November 2013 at the age of 57; four brothers; and one sister. A private family service will take place. Inurnment will take place in the Wilhelmina Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Wilhelmina Lutheran Church. Edwin Eivinsen December 18, 1928 – June 19, 2015 Edwin Eivinsen passed away peacefully on June 19, 2015 at the age of 86, after a courageous battle with myelofibrosis and leukemia. Ed was born to Ole and Kari Eivinsen and was the third of four children. In 1953, he married Jean Spiller. They were married for nearly 40 years and had three children Gary, Barbara and Robert. Nephew Trevor Carlson joined the family in 1964, when he was eight years old. After the passing of his wife Jean in 1993, Ed met a wonderful woman with whom to share the rest of his life. January 28, 1994 was a extremely lucky day for him. While golfing at his favorite course in Arizona, he got his first and only hole-in-one. Celebrating that evening, he met Sharon Hickey whom he would marry six months later. Ed and Sharon shared 21 years together spending their winters in Arizona and summers in BC. Ed was born and raised on the family farm in Daysland. He left home in his teens to work in the retail automotive business both in Vancouver and Edmonton. He later returned to the farm, which he eventually acquired and then expanded. Farming remained an integral part of his life until his passing. In 1965, he joined Crawford’s of Alberta as a territory manager, later becoming sales manager. He purchased controlling interest of Crawford’s of Alberta in 1972. Ed was a highly regarded entrepreneur in Camrose who worked tirelessly to build several successful businesses. He was elected President of the Farm Equipment Wholesalers’ Association (FEWA) in 1984, serving members in Canada, USA and England. Ed was a lifelong aviation enthusiast. While working on the farm in his early teen years, Ed saw an airplane fly overhead and, from that moment, he was hooked. He earned his private pilot licence at a very young age and continued to fly until he landed his beloved Navion for the final time in 2007 at the age of 78, completing more than 60 years of flying. Ed is survived by his loving wife Sharon; his children Barbara Blatz (Don), Robert Eivinsen (Esther) and Trevor Carlson (Patricia); stepchildren Caron Sada, Greg Holmes (Chris) and Steve Holmes (Jennifer); 15 grandchildren Gregg Blatz, Jordan Blatz (Laura), Chris Blatz, Jolisa Oliver (Josh), Mackenzie Eivinsen, Ethan Eivinsen, Jarrett Carlson, Mitchell Carlson, Nicole Carlson, Ivy Sada, Gunther Holmes, Garett Holmes, Isabelle Holmes, Josephine Holmes and Annelise Holmes; and two great-grandchildren Lincoln Lazowski and Cooper Blatz. Numerous beloved nieces and nephews also survive him. Ed was predeceased by his son Gary; first wife Jean; parents Ole and Kari; sisters Louise Cadell and Esther Carlson; and brother Larry. Celebration of His Life was held at Camrose United Church on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Interment has taken place in Daysland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Edwin may be made to the Lymphoma & Leukemia Society (www.lls.org or www.llscanada.org). To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Marguerite Ann Meland April 22, 1938 – June 21, 2015 Marguerite was born in Hardisty, AB on April 22, 1938. She passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at the age of 77 years. She grew up on the family farm being the youngest of four girls along with four brothers. Not being a true farm girl at heart, she moved to Hardisty as a teenager with her brother Ken, his wife Iris and their growing family. She had very fond memories of helping Iris around the house and being part of Lynn, Judy and Vicky’s lives. On March 4, 1959, Marguerite married Hugo Meland. They resided in Camrose and raised two daughters and a son. Shortly after their son Darcy’s passing, Marguerite started her career at Bethany Nursing Home which she very much enjoyed. She kept in touch with the friends she made over the years. The two loves she had, besides her family, were hockey and camping. Travelling to stay with her daughters to see the grandchildren and great-grandchildren was her joy. She loved to camp, so they would stay a little longer when they took the trailer. The Meland family reunion was the highlight of the summer and just last week, she said she sure wished they could go. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Hugo; children Val (Randy) Scott of Okotoks, AB and Shelley-Rae (Dale) Kirwer of Macklin, SK; five grandchildren Erin (Brett) Livingston, Kellie (Aaron) Demers, Cori (Dave) Lortie, Brett Scott (Kayla Brown), and Jordan Kirwer (Shylee Kamps); seven great-grandchildren MacKenzie Demers, Aiden Brown, Kassidy Demers, Dylan Livingston, Caydence Lortie, Quinten Demers and Blake Livingston; brothers Ken Drever of Camrose, Doug (Helen) Drever of Innisfail, and Ray Drever of Hardisty; and sister Marian Cooke of Vancouver. Marguerite was predeceased by one son Darcy; three sisters Muriel, Yvonne and Florence; and one brother Jim Drever. A Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Archdeacon Jacques Vaillancourt officiating. Interment has taken place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Cross Cancer Institute, or to CAFCL. I am writing to you on behalf of a dear friend – a grand old lady of the arts. She started life in vaudeville, made the transition to silent movies and found life again in generations of “talkies”. Her first beau was from back east and, after 10 years, he returned there and left her behind. Fortunately, her next sweetheart stayed with her through almost five decades. She still carries his name. In later years, she fell on hard times and she was almost given up as a lost cause. Fortunately, a local group of fans and a white knight rallied the powers-that-be to give her new hope, and she is once again the grand dame of the arts in our community. By now, you will have surmised that my friend is the Bailey Theatre. Over 104 years old, she has been lovingly restored and upgraded with state-of-the-art rigging, lighting and sound, and is assuming her rightful place as the downtown centre for arts and entertainment in Camrose. Unfortunately, her new life has been hindered with a ball-and-chain mortgage and no dowry. We are looking for more white knights, or fairy godmothers, to come to her aid to pay off the mortgage so that she can continue to be a source of joy and inspiration for future generations of fans. The mortgage is currently $440,000 CDN. Once the mortgage is paid off, operating costs will be reduced by $40,000 per year. That will allow us to concentrate on building an endowment fund to provide a steady annual source of income and secure the future of our beautiful theatre. We are very thankful that you, the local community, are great supporters of the Bailey and that you contribute so generously to our fundraising events, live and silent auctions and 50/50 draws. We are also very fortunate to have a group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, and a volunteer Board of Directors, who will continue to work tirelessly on fundraising, programming, marketing and promotions activities to continue to bring you “life’s entertaining moments” in this historic setting. Donations can be made through our secure Donation Box in the Bailey or in person at the Bailey Box Office. The Bailey Theatre Society is a non-profit society and a registered charity. Thank you for considering this as a way to make a lasting contribution to the arts, and to our community. We hope you can help and we look forward to hearing from you, one way or the other. Cook releases at Bailey By Murray Green

Scott Cook and the Long Weekends are releasing their first CD together at the Bailey Theatre. A show with songs from Go Long will begin at 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 6. “The Rose City Roots Society presented us a couple of times and they took really good care of us. We have had good audiences and it is one of the better places to play in Alberta,” said Cook, on why they wanted to have a release party in Camrose. Cook is known as a roots artist with a rare personal warmth. The Sherwood Park artist has managed to distill the stories collected over years of near-incessant touring across Canada, the USA, the UK, Europe, Asia, and Australia into straighttalking, keenly observant verse. “This CD is a whole different one for me. This one strays from my acoustic folk sound and is more of a party record. It features a sevenpiece honky tonk band. It is about festivals and summer fun,” explained Cook. He will still bring his humour, a disarming honesty, years of roads and a deep love of humanity to his song craft and storytelling. Continued on page 27

Harrison shatters golf course record By Murray Green

Andrew Harrison set a new record for the Camrose Golf Course. He shot a 60 over 18 holes on June 23. The old course record was held by Frank Van Dornick, who shot a 62 at a sanctioned event when the course was then a Par 71. “I didn’t think about it until I hit the 16th hole. I birdied the last three holes before and it was crazy,” said the humble Harrison of his special day. “I was just in the zone and couldn’t miss a shot.” Harrison, an 18-yearold Camrose golfer, shot a 63 earlier in the year and felt the record was within reach this summer. Camrose is currently a Par 70 course. He birdied number 11 and a regular outing turned into a record setting pace in a hurry. “I felt if I made a few more shots, I could hit 62. I birdied three of the last four holes. I thought at that point I could hit a 59, but number 17 gave me some trouble,” added Harrison. The record almost didn’t happen. “The horn blew after we finished 16 because of the lightning, but there was no way I was coming off,” joked Harrison, who focused on golf despite the threat of the lightning approaching. “I had to finish before it got worse. I was feeling the adrenalin and the storm coming in. I tried to keep calm.” His friend Colton Leslie witnessed the record. Jessiah Olson played nine holes with him before he had to leave.

Andrew Harrison tees off at Camrose Golf Course. He recorded a score of 60 on June 23.

“I feel that I am playing more consistent this year,” said Harrison. “I put on a few pounds over the winter

and I’m hitting it a little further this year. On 16 I was thinking about a 59, but

hopefully I can do that by the end of the year.” “This is the unofficial record, because to be official it has to be recorded in a sanctioned event,” explained golf pro Bill Penny. “The way he shoots, I expect him to break his own record. It is just a matter of time.” Harrison is aiming for provincials this week in Lethbridge and then Canadian westerns. “I’m excited for those and should be able to do well and compete. I want to go to the Alberta Men’s Amateur after that and then Canadian and junior amateurs,” he added. The local golfer is heading for the University of British Columbia on a scholarship this fall. “I’m excited to play golf all year-round and improve, see where that takes me. I want to make a career out of golf, but the education in kinesiology will be a nice fall back for me. I want a career in golf, so hopefully, a few years down,” Harrison said. “Shooting a 60 gives me confidence that I can play with some of the top golfers, especially if I keep improving.” Harrison was honoured to break the course record. “I played a few holes with Frank a couple of years ago,” he said. “He won a few amateur titles and it was an honour to pass him. It’s big for me to pass him and realize I’m at that level now so hopefully I can keep that going. He is a very good Camrose golfer.”

Future of Camrose ski jump in question By Dan Jensen

City council had the first of what could be many discussions on what to do with the Camrose ski jump June 15. The jump has had almost no use since it was built for the Alberta Winter Games in 1990. “The folks who have had exposure to it over the years see it as an icon that defines the city,” said Mayor Norm Mayer at Committee of the Whole. “New people coming into town see it as an eyesore and a threat to public safety.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland feels the City is exposing itself to liability as the jump continues to dilapidate. “I acknowledge it is iconic but I see it as a safety hazard,” she said. “I would like to see a very appropriate cairn at the top of the hill with a plaque or some sort of reference to the hill, as well as a picture of what was there and a picnic table.” Mayor Mayer agreed that having a cairn and picnic table would be the best way to go. “There is support from

the developer in the area to throw money into the pot to be able to put up a cairn or whatever you wish to call it,” he said. Council has asked that administration provide a report on the cost of either tearing the jump down or doing repairs to make it a safe structure. “Many of us around the table thought it would be a huge number,” said councillor Wayne Throndson. “I am still waiting to see what the number is.” Council has also asked the Camrose Ski Club to provide an opinion on whether its members would like to see the jump stay or go. “Obviously this is the wrong time of the year for the ski club to be active but we did invite them and I think they agreed that they would provide us with their opinion,” said Throndson. Councillor Bill Sears said he is not willing at this time to support any decision to remove the jump. “It is seen as being part of the community but we

need more information. At the very least I think we would be wise to have an open house and ask the public what they think.” Councillor David Ofrim said he would be very sad to see the jump taken down. “My kids talked about it with me yesterday and I told them I think it falls under the same category as the water tower that we had. It was basically too expensive to maintain and there wasn’t a use for it anymore, so it went down.” Councillor Ma x Lindstrand agreed that public consultation should occur. “It is a symbol that is iconic to our community and we haven’t heard what it would cost to make it safe,” he said. “It seems to me that it wouldn’t be that much to secure the facility and it certainly has tourism potential. I am not sure what the rush would be to tear it down.” Camrose Community Services general manager Ryan Poole suggested that an alternative to a cairn would be a statue or someone ski jumping

that could be seen from a long distance. “With a plaque or a cairn you wouldn’t be able to tell from afar what it is or what the history was,” he said. Camrose became famous in the early 1900s for the skill of the mostly Norwegian skiers. Nordic style was jumping and cross country combined, and the ski jump that was built in 1921 on the land of Ed Thompson, a land agent, proved to be the making of many champions. “Camrose skiers were helpful in getting ski clubs established at Banff a nd Edmonton,” sa id Fay Ca rlson i n An E arly Hi s t o r y of C amros e Ski Club and Camrose Ski Hill. Sk iers put Ca m rose on the map in USA , Canada and the world. Many champions were pro duc e d f rom t h is club.” Carlson noted that the ski jump is a vital link to the ski history of Camrose and should be on the list of designated historic sites.

Seniors’ Chat By Mary Wilton, ITEAM facilitator for Camrose Seniors’ Coalition

Camrose Seniors’ Coalition has held two Elders in Care Community Conversations over the last several years. It has obtained valuable information from seniors, their families, caregivers and agencies providing services to seniors. With the new ITEAM project, funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, Camrose Seniors’ Coalition is continuing the conversation, and working even more diligently on the project outcomes supported by myself, the ITEAM contract facilitator. ITEAM stands for Informed, Trained, Elder, Advocate, Mentors. The ITEAM project outcomes include the development of an elder care advocate training for seniors and their families and a planning guide for “Aging in Place.” A networking event for advocate/mentors from central Alberta will be held in early 2016 to share experiences and resources. To obtain community grass-roots feedback from the people best able to articulate what is required to fit local needs regarding the project out-

comes, Camrose Seniors’ Coalition hosted a workshop on Tuesday, June 16, in the Rosehaven Auditorium called, “Finding our Way: Our Experience Caring for Our Loved Ones.” Workshop participants shared their personal experiences and listened to others who have also journeyed as caregivers, family members and seniors receiving care. Using a World Café approach, Rev. Dr. Alan Richards facilitated discussion in the form of table conversations. The “World Café” approach was selected as the best process to engage in dialogue with people who have first hand knowledge and experience in this important conversation about Elder Care. These rich conversations are essential to the development of communitybased elder care advocacy as well as defining the training required to fit the needs expressed. The conversations will also assist in the creation of a planning guide, ensuring that key information is included and the format is user friendly. In addition to input from the June 16 gathering, two advisory committees were formed in May to help guide key components of the project. The Advocacy/Men-

LEGION DONORS

torship Advisory Committee is overseeing the development and implementation of the community-based elder care advocates series of fall training workshops and follow-up gatherings. The Planning Guide Advisory Committee is focused on the production of the locally developed planning guide for “Aging in Place.” Both committees are working hard to create a solid start to the project through their wide personal and professional experience, as well as knowledge and skills in elder care issues. The future of this project is promising due to the dedication of the volunteers, service agencies and members of the public who have generously shared their experiences and wisdom to build these new supports for seniors and their families. Regular updates follow in the months ahead. More information on the World Café process can be found in A Resource Guide for Hosting Conversations that Matter at the World Café by Juanita Brown and the World Café Community; Whole Systems Associates, 2002, and from http://www.theworldcafe. com.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Members of the community who had a hand in making the new cenotaph project become reality viewed the monument east of the Community Centre on June 24. The cenotaph will be dedicated on Canada Day, July 1, at 11:45 a.m. The entire community is invited to help with the celebration.

Grateful Grannies plan Canada Day market By Barb Stroh

Can you just picture some of the unique treasures hidden away in homes throughout Camrose and area? The Grateful Grannies have been unearthing these one of a kind treasures for a Village Market at this year’s Canada Day celebrations on Wednesday, July 1. The sale will be held rain or shine at the fairgrounds, 53 Street and 45 Avenue, in Camrose, following the Canada Day opening ceremonies which start at 11 a.m. The sale will wrap up at 5 p.m. The Village Market will be on site with the other Community Garage Sale booths. In case of poor weather the sale will be moved into the Field House. Teresa Roth has spearheaded this fundraising project for the Grateful Grannies. Roth said, “Many of our members have collected things from around the world. Most of us are at the stage where we are in the process of downsizing. Now we are faced with a big dilemma of what to do with these prized items. So we asked our over 90 members to donate unique things to a great cause, the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.” The Grateful Grannies support African grandmoth-

ers and the concept of a Village Market fits. There will be a good variety of giftware, home accessories, antiques, tools, and handcrafts. This is not your average garage sale. Quality items, especially ones with an African or international flavor will be on sale. All items will be priced; however, the volunteers have been encouraged to barter with interested buyers. Roth said, “The prices will be considered as “suggested” so let the fun begin.” The Grateful Grannies are comprised of grandmothers and grand “others” from Camrose and area who are committed to supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. The Grateful Grannies is one of over 242 Grandmother Groups across Canada which raise funds to assist grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa as they care for a generation of orphaned grandchildren and others affected by HIV/AIDS. The Village Market will be open from 11:30 to 5 on Wednesday, July 1, at the fairgrounds, together with the Canada Day Celebrations. Contact Teresa at 780-678-2272 for more details.

2015 GMC Yukon A culmination of improvements in design and engineering

Graeme Davidson By Dan Jensen

The 2015 Yukon at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC in Camrose is the culmination of numerous improvements in designing, engineering and crafting. “It’s a whole new Yukon,” said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer principal Will McClellan. Aerodynamics

The 2015 Yukon was purposefully designed for efficient aerodynamics. The goal was to make it appear smaller to the wind for reduced wind noise and improved efficiency. Bold, sculpted lines glide from the three-dimensional grille and over the inlaid doors. The redesigned liftgate reduces wind drag for enhanced efficiency and cleverly houses the wiper, which is hidden when not in use. Projectorbeam headlights create a distinctive appearance with front and rear “C” shaped LED signature lighting. Quiet ride

Yukon raises the standards for quietness. Acoustic laminated windshield and front door glass, triple door seals, a new engine compartment barrier and damping materials in floor sheet

metal all help keep noise from entering the cabin. As a result, you’ll enjoy the quietest Yukon ever – in fact, there’s no quieter SUV in its class, with noise sealing improved by 33 per cent. Yukon’s all-new instrument panel and Driver Information Centre put driver controls and entertainment options a fingertip or a voice command away. At the centre of it all is the Colour Touch Audio System with IntelliLink, featuring a 203 mm diagonal display, to provide a personalized audio experience and seamless integration of personal devices. The available Blu-Ray/DVD rearseat entertainment system includes a 234 mm diagonal flip-down display. Yukon XL models feature two screens, one specifically for third-row passengers. This system is compatible with most popular video gaming systems. Yukon integrates generous storage compartments throughout the cabin. An expanded centre console offers room for laptops, tablets and whatever else you can’t live without. There are handy upper and lower door pockets and cupholders so everyone has a place

for smaller carry-ons and, of course, refreshments. New available secondand third-row power fold-flat seats turn generous passenger room into an equally generous cargo area. It’s a luxury no other competitor offers. For even more flexibility, second-row seats offer an easy-to-use, power-release fold and tumble feature. To provide second-row passengers with easier access, the size of the second-row doors has been increased. Performance

The all-new Yukon EcoTec 3 engine family features GMC’s latest technologies: Direct Injection (DI), Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Continuously Variable Valve Timing (VVT) to deliver power, and in the 5.3 litre V8, the best fuel efficiency in a full-size SUV. It generates 355 horsepower, 383 lb.-ft. of torque and 10.1 litres per 100 km highway. Yukon’s smooth ride suspension system senses and adjusts the rear suspension height to maintain a level position. It also contributes to Yukon’s max trailering rating. Yukon has prolonged brake life by using Ferritic

Nitro-Carburizing (FNC) technology, a patented, GMexclusive corrosion protection process which hardens the rotor surface. It provides protection against rust to help prevent steering-wheel shudder when applying the brakes. Yukon’s available fourwheel-drive system allows you to switch between twowheel drive for optimum fuel efficiency and four-wheel drive for much-needed additional traction and control. The new frame is constructed with 75 per cent high-strength steel for maximum people- and cargo-carrying capability. A wider rear track provides for improved stability and more confident cornering. Electric variable-assist power rack-and-pinion steering improves fuel efficiency versus engine powered systems. It provides less assist at highway speeds for a solid on-centre feel, and more assist for less steering effort when you’re maneuvering in tight spaces. New shear-style mounts dampen side-to-side vibrations, while the new hydraulic mounts dampen vertical vibrations.

Auto grade braking automatically senses when you want to slow your Yukon and engages a Grade Braking shift pattern within the transmission to help maintain your desired speed. StabiliTrak, Yukon’s electronic stability control system, helps improve stability by reducing traction loss. Sensing when Yukon isn’t responding to steering inputs, it adjusts engine speed and applies brake pressure to any wheel to help maintain directional control. To mitigate rollovers, it anticipates a vehicle “tip up” situation, rapidly braking to help reduce lateral forces and the likelihood of a rollover. Tow/Haul mode raises transmission upshift points, providing more power to accelerate when trailering or hauling heavy loads. It also helps reduce speed by using engine compression to slow Yukon instead of merely braking. See the 2015 GMC Yukon at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC at 385048 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2355 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

Q.

Do you carry any natural sweeteners?

Q.

I don’t want to use anything artificial.

A:

Absolutely! We carry numerous natural alternatives to sugar for those who want alternative sweeteners. Raw Organic Yacon Powder/Syrup – This is made from a potato-like root, farmed in South America. This is an attractive alternative to sugar for diabetics and is known for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Raw Organic Lucuma Powder – This fruit, native to the Andean valleys of Peru, provides a natural sweetening to desserts without increasing blood sugar levels. Erythritol – is a sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols contain fewer calories than sugar and they occur naturally in plants, like fruits and vegetables. Erythritol provides a sweet taste that does not raise blood sugar to the degree that sucrose (sugar) does. Xylitol - is a naturally occurring alcohol found in most plant material. Possessing approx. 33% fewer calories, it is absorbed more slowly than sugar, and does not contribute to high blood sugar levels. Stevia – Stevia, is a zero calorie, plant-based sweetener. Stevia, itself, contains no carbohydrates, so it does not affect blood sugar or insulin levels. Monk Fruit – Monk fruit is a melon-like gourd found in China and Northern Thailand. This is a a lowglycemic-index sweetener with a positive effect on stimulating insulin secretion. Answer provided by:

Q.

What is the most common mistake people make when buying a hot tub?

A:

There are actually two common errors: the first is to buy a tub on impulse from a dealer or company not properly researched. This might be at a parking lot sale or at a trade fair. It’s imperative that consumers make sure they will be able to obtain the parts and service they may require long after the sale. Our advice is to make sure that you are selecting a brand and a dealer with a long and successful track record. The dealer must have a fixed location offering parts and service. It’s also crucial you buy the right tub for your needs. Don’t rush into a purchase or be swayed by high pressure sales tactics. Buy a size that will be right for 90% of the dips you will take in your tub. Recognize that the number of seats in a tub may not translate into complete comfort or spaciousness with all seats occupied at the same time. Take your time. Compare. Study. Try. We think you will choose us! Answer provided by:

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

He is equally at home alone on stage, accompanying himself with guitar, banjo, ukulele, or backed by his acoustic trio, the Second Chances or, in this case, the Long Weekends. “I’ve played with these people (Long Weekends) over the years, since 2008. We just didn’t make a record. They have all been on my records before, but it makes more sense to travel solo. This time they all came together at the same time long enough to make a record,” Cook explained. “The electric band (Long Weekends) will be touring for six dates in Alberta just to release the record.” Local music fans will have one of those rare chances to hear the full band on stage. “It’s just not cost effective to take everyone on the road outside of Alberta,” Cook added. “I wanted them to get together to make the CD. It’s a party record and I wanted it to sound like a bunch of friends getting together having fun.” Cook’s songs are true stories set to music, drawing on influences from folk and oldtime country to soul and blues. He has made his living playing music full-time since 2007, and, despite all the hard miles, he still believes that songs can change your life, and your life can change the world. “People should bring their dancing shoes and be ready for a party. It should be a lot of fun,” said Cook. He has averaged over 160 shows and 10 festivals each year for the last eight years. Songwriter’s round

Cook will also be in Camrose on Friday, July 31, for the songwriters’ workshop at Big Valley Jamboree from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. He will share some of his music with other artists as well as the audience. “I will be singing songs in a round with other artists. I’ve never been to the Big Valley Jamboree before, but Russell deCarle is heading that up and I have a lot of respect for him, so I agreed to be there,” said Cook. “I’ve been at similar folk events that are called writer’s in the rounds instead of a workshop. It should be fun.”

CITY OF CAMROSE UNDERTAKES INITIATIVE TO CREATE A CULTURAL MASTER PLAN At the present, there are already many cultural opportunities provided either directly by the City or indirectly by other government agencies, volunteer organizations or private enterprises. However, these providers either work independently or even often in conflict with one another while providing similar services or opportunities. The City of Camrose anticipates having a Cultural Master Plan will reduce these inefficiencies and conflicts and ultimately benefit end users and the organizations themselves. The City of Camrose is looking for a consultant to work with it and other organizations in the region to create this master plan. For more information about this project, visit our website at www.camrose.ca.

TOILET REBATE PROGRAM

The City of Camrose will once again be offering a rebate to those who replace any number of older, high volume toilets with newer, eligible low-flow models. The rebate will be $70 for one toilet; or, if multiple toilets are being replaced, participants will receive a 25% rebate for the cost of each additional toilet (up to a maximum of $50 per toilet). This program is offered to anyone with a water account with the City of Camrose including residents, businesses, and institutions who apply within the determined time frame. The City of Camrose is offering this rebate to encourage water conservation. The toilet is one of the largest water consuming appliances, attributing to nearly 30% of total indoor water use in residential homes and up to 45% in some businesses or institutions. Certain conditions will apply in order to qualify for this program.

Do you sell or install toilets?

The City of Camrose must receive: 1. A completed toilet rebate application form. 2. Original receipt of purchase of new, approved low-flow toilet(s). (Will be returned with rebate). 3. Pictures of the washroom, before and after installation. 4. Evidence that the old toilet was made non-functional.

Contact us with a list of toilets that you stock and we will let you know which ones are approved for the Toilet Rebate Program!

For a full list of conditions, please refer to the City’s website: www.camrose.ca/toiletrebate The City of Camrose must receive the application between July 6, 2015 and September 30, 2015. All other items (original receipt, before and after photos, and proof the old toilet was made unusable) must be received by October 30, 2015 at 4:30 p.m. Rebates will be given out as funding is available to those who fulfill the requirements. Steady as she goes appears to be the mantra for the Camrose housing market. Information presented by Altario Appraisals in its April newsletter shows that the sale of improved properties in the first quarter of 2015 was down from that in the first quarter of 2014 (73 to 63) but was on par with the first quarter numbers in both 2012 and 2013. “The most intriguing part of all this is that prices continued to rise in quarter one,” said Altario Appraisals owner Jerry Iwanus. “The average sale price for the quarter, the average sale price on a rolling 12 month basis and the median price for the quarter were all up from the previous quarter. The 12-month rolling average graph line that started its upward trend two years ago has continued in that direction unbated, with quarter-by-quarter median prices showing more volatility by generally following the same pattern.” The average sales price of $300,643 in quarter one was the second highest for any quarter since 2003. Oversupply The newsletter noted that there are 112 residential properties on the market in Camrose via MLS (on the Central Alberta board and the Edmonton board combined), excluding vacant land, versus 73 at the beginning of October. “If we consider this relative to the 63 sales that occurred in quarter one of 2015 there appears to be an oversupply that has not yet manifested itself in terms of either falling prices or extended exposure times,” said Iwanus. “Perhaps the market is simply getting ready to respond to the higher level

of activity that tends to occur in quarter two of each year. If so, perhaps the effect of the downturn won’t be felt for a while yet in the Camrose marketplace.” Information from City of Camrose economic development showed the City had issued building permits totalling $1,477,800 to the end of February (2015), with residential permits accounting for $1,162,800 of that total, followed by commercial permits at $195,000, industrial permits at $75,000 and institutional permits at $45,000. The total value of building permits issued by the City of Camrose to the end of February 2014, was $1,999,500, with residential permits accounting for $1,794,500 of that total, commercial permits $175,000 and industrial permits $30,000. Smaller towns Altario Appraisals recorded 44 sales between $20,000 and $405,000 in the first quarter in the small towns of the area that it tracks daily (as far north as Ryley, Holden and Viking in Beaver County, as far east as Hughenden in the Municipal District of Provost, as far south as Veteran in the County of Paintearth, and as far west as Bittern Lake). Twenty-one acreage sales were recorded in the first quarter in all of Camrose and Flagstaff Counties, as well as in the north part of the County of Stettler, the east part of the County of Wetaskiwin, and the southernmost part of the County of Beaver.
