Report on the Legislature Bruce Hinkley, MLA, Wetaskiwin-Camrose
Great news for the constituents of WetaskiwinCamrose already after the recent short Legislative Assembly session. Premier Notley frugally appointed a small, professional, competent cabinet, which was publicly sworn in, in front of some 10,000 excited Albertans. A new Lieutenant-Governor has been appointed: Mrs. Lois Mitchell. Bill 1 was passed – unanimously – to end corporate and union political donations, which will level the playing field. All candidates for election will now have a chance to succeed on their talents rather than on the size of someone’s wallet. Bill 3 was the second bill to be passed. This restored all funding which was cut to programs for seniors, schools, health care and numerous other programs. It also ended the health care levy, fees, and other taxes which disturbed so many Albertans. The last bill passed was Bill 2, which will, for only seven per cent of Albertans, raise taxes an additional two per cent. These seven per cent of Albertans are the large, profitable corporations
Bruce Hinkley
and wealthy individuals. That means 93 per cent of us will not have our taxes raised. Small business taxes remain frozen at three per cent. Post-secondary student tuition fees are frozen for two years. Highway 63 will be twinned. Seventy per cent of it by the end of this summer. Water pipelines, such as the one to Millet will be funded. Premier Notley formally apologized to all First Nations for the wrongs of Residential Schools and inappropriate fostering of First Nation’s children.
A mental health commission has been established to improve mental health services in rural areas. Farmers are going to have “some” Worker Compensation benefits for the first time ever. The new schools in Alberta will be built. My personal Private Members’ Motion 50f1 was also passed unanimously – it is the first step (of the long marathon) to give landowners fair compensation and respect their rights to due process. Finally a government is recognizing the need to respect property owners’ rights. On the home front the constituency office in Camrose is open and Niel Parker, raised and educated in Camrose, has been hired as my constituency assistant. He will be involved in many community events. The office phone number is: 780672-0000. I have been appointed to three committees: Private Bills, Community and Family, Social (education, advanced education, justice), and elected to the New Democrat caucus executive. It has been a thrill to meet so many of our fine constituents.
Green Action Committee seeks direction from City council By Dan Jensen The Camrose Green Action committee was seeking direction from Committee of the Whole council. “We are asking what role you see us having,” said Green Action Committee chair Gordon Lougheed. “If you do not have a role for us then we request that you make that decision clear.” The Green Action committee believes it can assist the City with the implementation of its Municipal Sustainability Plan, review and provide input and /or feedback for new plans such as the land use bylaw, provide input and feedback for multiple City divisions, including parks, engineering and planning, and be the “green voice” in promoting various community events and educational opportunities. “There are big projects coming up and I think the committee would be a good sounding board,” said Lougheed. The committee has been gradually losing members and is at the point now where it only has four.
“We have been unable to have a quorum since we lost councillor Bill Sears (after council decided to remove representation from nonlegislated committees),” said Lougheed. “There has been a bit of a loss of interest in the Green Action Committee and with the members themselves.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland said she would like to see the work of the committee continue. “I am totally in favour of having another set of ears and eyes out there in the community that is informing us on areas that we may not delve into necessarily. I think the benefit of having a committee is certainly there.” Councillor Sears expressed appreciation for the work the committee is doing. “I know it has been difficult but speaking for myself, council would like to see the committee continue.” Lougheed pointed out that one of the difficulties the committee faces is a lack of administrative support. “We need ways of
interacting with the various departments,” he said. “We would like to have meetings closer (to City Hall) so we can call upon people to come in as required to discuss things.” Councillor PJ Stasko suggested the committee could be tasked with working with the Blue Dot campaign, a world wide environmental movement that council is going to be asked to endorse. “The Blue Dot is really starting to get going and has quite a swell of support,” said Stasko. The Green Action Committee is an Advisory Standing Committee was formed in November of 2008 to help the City of Camrose reduce its environmental impact. Along with making recommendations to council regarding the waste management and energy efficiencies, it has worked with the public to plant trees and reduce water consumption, and assisted City Center Camrose with the purchase of waste receptacles, which have yet to be installed.

Armena eliminates Beaumont in semifinals By Murray Green
The second place Beaumont Angels were knocked off by the third place Armena Royals in the Powerline Baseball League playoff semifinals. The teams split two games during the regular season, but it was all Armena in the playoffs. In the opening playoff game, Armena pounded the ball on its way to a 14-4 victory in Beaumont on July 7. Then they blanked the Angels 3-0 in the second game of the best of three series on July 9. The Ryley Rebels placed first at 12-2 and took on the Rosalind Athletics in the other match. Ryley won both of the season matches earlier this year and Rebels are the defending league champs. In the playoff opener, Rosalind doubled up Ryley 10-5 in Ryley on July 7. Ryley fought back with a 5-3 victory in the second match to force a third and deciding game on July 14. Playoff finals are slated to begin on July 16. The

Be wary of phone calls asking for money By Dan Jensen
Camrose should be wary of telephone calls in which they are asked to pay utility bills and income taxes through a credit card or online money/ wire transfer service. As part of a new scam that is making its rounds, individuals claiming to be from Revenue Canada are telling people they owe back taxes as the result of an audit and a payment must be made immediately to avoid a fine. In some versions of the scam the call recipient is told there is an outstanding warrant or legal action that can be avoided if the payment
is made immediately or that they’ll be deported or arrested if payment is not made right away. “The Canada Revenue Agency will sometimes contact individuals by telephone,” said Service Alberta, “but never requests payment over the telephone in any form.” Individuals claiming to be from Direct Energy or Emax inform the person they are calling their electricity account is in arrears and threaten to shut off their electricity unless payment is made with either a prepaid credit card or online
payment method such as PayPal. Service Alberta notes that although energy companies may ask for a credit card number over the phone as a form of payment for overdue accounts, they do not ask for numbers from pre-paid credit cards or make payment arrangements through the use of online money transfer services. Steps to take Service Alberta suggests that those who are contacted try to verify the validity of the calls by asking for details of their account, which only they and their retailer will
know, including account address, payment history (including the date and amount of the last payment and how it was made). If suspicious they should tell the caller they are hanging up and calling the local number listed for the energy retailer or the Canada Revenue Agency. The call recipients should not provide any personal or financial information, be swayed by deadlines and aggressive tactics, or believe their telephone’s caller ID. “The caller may have altered (the ID) to make it appear that the call is
originating from a legitimate company,” said Service Alberta. Anyone who receives a phone call that he or she suspects was not legitimate is urged to report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501, or by using its online fraud reporting system at www.antifraudcentrec entreantif rau d e.ca/ index-eng.htm Anyone who has sent money to a fraudulent caller should contact the Camrose Police Service or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Home construction in Valleyview West set to begin By Dan Jensen
Action is starting to heat up in the new Valleyview West subdivision in southwest Camrose. “Of the 70 lots that are available in the first phase, about 35 are already sold,” said Royal LePage realtor and designated Valleyview West marketer Don Forestier. “We are expecting that the builders will start doing the digging in August.” Valleyview West is a three phase project being described by its developer, Camgill Enterprises Ltd., as a “premiere estate community” featuring large home sites, access to main shopping and recreation areas, a well developed trail system and significant green space providing a beautiful backdrop for the neighbourhood. “It’s going to have a man made lake surrounded by quite a few walk-out lots and will tie in with the whole network of trails running through the Stoney Creek Valley all the way north to the golf course,” said Forestier. The development’s architectural theme is to be a contemporary interpretation of regional heritage styles. Homes will: have inviting “street friendly” facades that promote “eyes on the street” with front facing living/ family rooms; reduce massing through heightened articulation and the use of elements such as dormers, overhangs, porches and wall projections; create depth, interest and

variation through changes in exterior materials, textures and colours and the use of human scale details; utilize clean, simple and bold trims; and have varied roof forms and pitches that reduce bulk and are appropriate to the style of the house. Camgill Enterprises will work with
the owners, architects or designers, and builders to ensure that design guidelines are adopted in order to obtain a high quality of planning and architecture. Valleyview West will have about 20 residential lots in the second phase, which is expected to go on sale
in the spring of 2017, and another 20 residential lots in the third phase, which is expected to go on sale in the spring of 2018. The selling of the first phase is expected to take upwards of two years. Forestier believes Valleyview West is a much need-
ed development in Camrose. “The Valleyview development that was done by the City of Camrose is totally sold out while the Creekview development is about 80 per cent sold,” he said. “When you take a look around you can see there aren’t that many lots that are available.”

Canada Post has told Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Grande Prairie that it will cease making door to door deliveries. “On the day Canada Post announced a five year plan across the country, I received an email from Canada Post after the fact that they were going to community mailboxes (CMB) in Grande Prairie and Camrose next summer. Subsequently, I received an email the next day saying they added Wetaskiwin,” said Larry Dionne, president of the CUPW Edmonton local. “We have quite a few issues and I talked to the mayor that day, Norm Mayer, and he told me that we have a few of these community mailboxes in the city already. Normally, the new communities have the CMB and are planned. Whereas when you try to put them into older neighbourhoods, you tend to have more people with mobility issues. The other part is where do you stick these things. They (Canada Post) will send you the location of the CMB
and tell you if you have a problem with the location to phone this number.” Dionne said the mailboxes will be crammed into any place that is available. “What we saw in Fort McMurray is that they put a bank of 40 to 50 mailboxes in a school zone. The community raised concerns and they were dispersed into several smaller CMB.” Postal workers will be able to stop in one place and disperse the mail to a lot of addresses. However, that also causes problems. “Our routes then become much larger. It is very difficult for some people to get their mail. Who is going to keep these places shovelled and clear the ice in the winter? We have lots of seniors, people with disabilities and some with no way of getting to the CMB. For us walking in the winter is one way to keep warm. When you stand in one place for up to 50 boxes, you will be open to the elements for a long period of time,” said Stop the Cuts coordinator and Sherwood Park letter carrier Kathy Gouldie. “There is more vandalism and theft with CMB. People cut the
whole thing off and take the unit with everyone’s mail.” The Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) told a parliamentary committee that the end of door-to door-delivery would adversely affect Canadians with disabilities, noting that Canada made a commitment not to do anything that would reduce accessibility services when it ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Canada Post will be using resident surveys to determine where the community mailboxes (CMB) should go. However, union members say don’t expect Canada Post to have your best interests in mind in the final selection process. “We understand the volume of mail is down, but the number of parcels are going up and people need access to those,” said Dionne. City officials would be able to accommodate Canada Post’s wishes to have the mailboxes close to intersections as long as they are not too close as to impede visibility of traffic. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has different views than Canada Post on how much
of a negative impact this will have on Camrose. CMBs were introduced as an integral element of the design and layout of future housing developments in consultation with the municipality and the builders. Now community mailboxes are being introduced in areas that have not been designed for their presence. More than 577 municipalities in Canada have passed resolutions opposing the elimination of door-todoor delivery, or calling for a halt to delivery changes until there is proper consultation. Canada Post said no regular or part-time employee will lose his or her job as a result of the initiative. Canada Post plans to reduce its workforce through the elimination of temporary positions and retirement. “In Sherwood Park we had 24 full-time carriers and two part-time. We are down to 10 full- and three part-time carriers, so we did lose employees. Most of us who stayed have permanent positions,” explained Gouldie. “To have your own walk (route) you have to have 18 years of seniority.”
Many municipalities have had to deal with the problems of litter associated with community mailboxes. “Somebody is going to have to clean these areas. People go to pick up mail, while walking their dog, so you have to deal with extra mess besides the unaddressed mail,” said Gouldie. “Who’s mess is this?” Inadequate snow removal around community mailboxes and street letter boxes is a major complaint of residents and a constant area of friction between municipalities and Canada Post. This can lead to serious difficulties for seniors who are more vulnerable to slips and falls on slippery surfaces. An average of one in four CMBs experienced a break-in, theft, arson or vandalism during a five year study period. “Mail service is a public service and everyone deserves to receive mail at their residence,” concluded Dionne. Canada Post plans to eliminate all door-to-door mail delivery in the future and dramatic increase stamp prices beginning in the new year.

Celebrating the friends of BRSD
Flagstaff County West trustee Susan Chromik presents an award to Bob Coutts for his contributions to Forestburg School.
BRSD city of Camrose trustee Norm Erickson presented a gift to Council of School Leadership Award recipient Laura Swanson.
BRSD board chair Kendall Severson, left, with Battle River Community Foundation representatives Dana Andreassen and Blain Fowler.
Beaver County trustees Rebecca Heiberg, left, and Tracey Boast Radley with Shuter Memorial Group members Deb Lindstrand and Dana Morgan.
The Battle River School Division board of trustees presented “Friends of Battle River” awards June 26. The awards were created by the trustees to recognize and celebrate those individuals or organizations who have contributed in outstanding ways to the success of students. One is for individuals or organizations which make contributions to a specific school or area within BRSD. The other is a division-wide award for those whose contributions span a larger geographic area. All nominations were submitted by BRSD staff members. The following awards were presented. Flagstaff County
award: Bob Coutts / Coutts Home Hardware. Bob Coutts, owner of Coutts Home Hardware in Forestburg, was nominated for his contributions, over many years to Forestburg School. Coutts has been an active volunteer as an individual and has made multiple donations of both items and dollars through his business as well. From small tools for building projects, to helping students locate trees and then helping them plant them properly, Bob has been an outstanding contributor and his support is much appreciated. Beaver County award: Shuter Memorial Group. The Shuter Memorial Group was formed after the death of Gregg Shute in 2009 by a group of
friends who wanted to honour his memory and continue to celebrate his love of music. The group began hosting an annual fundraising event and donating the proceeds. They were nominated for this award in recognition of their contributions to music programs at both Viking and Ryley Schools, through the purchase of musical instruments and music resources such as sheet music, amps and more. This award selection was made prior to this year’s Shuter Memorial Group allocations, which have benefitted schools in other areas as well. BRSD says thank you for helping to keep the music playing. Division-wide award:
Battle River Community Foundation. The Battle River Community Foundation is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year – just like Battle River School Division. The Foundation’s first-ever grant allocation, made in 1996, was a $200 scholarship to a BRSD school. There has never been a year since that time when BRSD schools or programs did not receive dollars from the Foundation. Since 2009 the Battle River Community Foundation has been a partner in Reading University, which has served more than 200 children in an area stretching from Tofield to Forestburg. BR SD extended
thanks to the Foundation for all it does. Excellence in leadership The board of trustees presented a Council of School Leadership award to Laura Swanson. The Council of School Leadership is a committee of the Alberta Teachers Association, made up of school leaders from across Alberta, which is committed to the promotion and advancement of excellent practices in educational leadership through an Excellence in Leadership award. This award acknowledges contributions to the field of educational administration and recognizes and rewards excellence.

Sixth Camrose Scouts attend Pacific Jamboree By Dan Jensen
Six Scouts and three leaders from Sixth Camrose departed Camrose last Thursday morning for the July 11 to 18 Pacific Jamboree at Camp Barnard on Vancouver Island. “It’s hard to tell who is more excited, the kids or the leaders,” said Sixth Camrose leader Dianna Lindberg in a pre-trip interview. “We are going to be taking a couple days to go and a couple days to come home so that everyone gets a bit of a vacation.” The Pacific Jamboree is one of the biggest Scouting events in the world, drawing upwards of 3,000 Scouts, 2,000 or more leaders and another 1,000 to 2,000 service people who help with camp setup and the planning of activities. Past Jamborees have had Scouts from as far away as the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico and across Canada. “It is huge,” said Lindberg. “We could see as many as 6,000 people attending.” The Scouts will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities that include a sail of the Salish seas, Art of Dragon boat racing, an overnight journey on the Juan De Fuca trail, a Tour de Rock on mountain bikes, repelling a natural rock face, and lumberjack log rolling. They will also spend a day in the BC capital of Victoria strolling down the cobblestone streets,
exploring the inner harbour, eating in celebrated restaurants or participating in the city’s many recreational activities. “Every day will be jam packed with things to do,” said Lindberg, who also went to the Pacific Jamboroe on Gibson’s Landing on the Sunshine Coast (where the show The Beachcombers was filmed) four years ago. The Scouts will be spending their last day at the camp where they will have the opportunity to relax and make sure that everything is in place for the trip back home. “It’s going to be a bit of a downtime,” said Lindberg. “The kids won’t have to get up at 6 a.m. for breakfast routines and will be able to sleep in.” The Jamboree will have opening and closing ceremonies, but no campfires. “I think they have done away with the campfires part because of the potential for a forest fire,” said Lindberg. “There weren’t any campfires at the Jamboree four years ago either.” Hosted by the BCYukon councils once every four years, the Pacific Jamboree is open to all youth of Scouting age. “The Jamboree is an opportunity for them to test themselves, see what they can do, and make new friends,” said Lindberg. “A lot of the friendships that

are formed at the Jamboree carry on for a long time afterwards. As an example, when we were at the Jamboree four years ago my son met Scouts from Salmon Arm, B.C. and is still in touch with them today. We actually had them come out and visit us last October.” The Sixth Camrose Scouts have been raising funds for their trip since last February with bottle drives, barbecues and various other chores in the area.
“We helped at the Moose breakfasts by clearing tables, doing the dishes, did some painting for the Duhamel Historical Society at the campground on Highway 21, did some cleanup at the Kensington Apartments, and cleaned out the birds’ nests at the Camrose and District Fish and Game Association fishing pond just east of Camrose,” said Lindberg. The Scouts also raised funds through the sale of
sponsorships at a model car rally. Camp Barnard is a 250 acre camp at Sooke with a 17-acre lake, swimming area, boathouse and a lake trail. The camp is used year round and offers short and long-term residential camping, wilderness camping and day use opportunities in a safe yet challenging environment. The Jamboree Unit Subcamps are nestled in the west coast Douglas fire forest.
Camrose and area well represented at Alberta 55 Plus Games By Dan Jensen
Camrose and Camrose County will be wellrepresented at the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in Strathmore July 16 to 19. “I am absolutely ecstatic,” said Rose Snopek, activity director for Zone 4, of which Camrose and Camrose County are a part. “We have more of the tennis, golf and athletics people who have qualified this year compared to other years. In fact, I think we are probably number one in our zone for representation from a certain area.” Alvin Eyolfson and Bev Maertens-Poole will be competing in athletics and arts and crafts. Darrell Skjaveland will be competing in athletics. Ole Lundle, Sharon Olsen, Kathleen Tennant, Nicole Silver, Gail Kerr, Lois Wilkie and Jean Clarke are entered in arts and crafts. Leona Oberg and Helen Cook are entered in cribbage singles. Dennis and Dianne Hartman are entered in floor shuffleboard. Linda Slater, Mike
Camrose and area participants in the 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in Strathmore include, left to right, front, Paul Davis, Bev Maertens-Poole, Ann Lindgren, Sharon Olsen, Gail Kerr, left to right, back, Helen Cook, Fran Fodchuk, Sylvia Lyon, Kathleen Tennant, Nicole Silver and Ole Lundle. The Alberta Games began as a provincial government initiative for amateur sport, providing an opportunity for all Albertans to participate. The first three Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games, formerly known as the Alberta Seniors’ Games, were held in Camrose in 1980, 1982 and 1984.
Yaremchuk, Lawrence Koehli, Steve Petz and David Gray will be competing in golf. Bill Maertens-Poole and Bob Affleck will be competing in pickleball. Paul Davis will be competing in eight-ball pool. Susan Nigh, Diane
Weeres, David Dahle and Ordean Broen will be competing in tennis. Ed Fuller will be competing in floor curling. Fran Fodchuk and Sylvia Lyon will be competing in contract bridge. Ann Lindgren will be entered in creative writing.
Renee Chartrand, Kevin Drader, Lorne Enright, Ed Heck, Ken Kirk, George Odovichuc, Terry Skoropad, Norm Van Petten, Fred Vanouck and Glen Winder will be competing in slo-pitch. “Zone 4 has slo-pitch teams in the 60, 65 and
70 age categories,” said Snopek. “We usually have four teams that go, but we didn’t have enough women this year for a co-ed team.” The Zone 4 team is made up of approximately 130 athletes who live in an area of central Alberta that stretches from the Saskatchewan border to the Rocky Mountains and includes Red Deer, Lacombe, Wetaskiwin, Stettler, Mirror, Bashaw, Rimbey, Ponoka and Camrose. Transportation The participants will have their own ways of getting to the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games. “Some of them are taking the bus, some are taking their trailers and some are driving,” said Snopek. “We have 41 people who are taking trailers, which really takes the pressure off the host community when it comes to providing hotel rooms.” Just over a dozen Zone 4 participants will be staying with relatives either in Calgary or Strathmore.

Recycled rocket bottles By Ryley Corcoran, Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society
Machinery Day date changes By Dan Jensen
Camrose and District Centennial Museum has changed the date of its annual Machinery Day to correspond with the city-wide Alberta Culture Days Festival. The new date for the event is Saturday, Sept. 26. The 1912 steam engine will be running, along with several other pieces of equipment, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be demonstrations of blacksmithing, thrashing, small engines, and old time washing machines, as well as music and much more. For those who want something to eat or drink, concessions will be set up on site.
What would be a better way to spend a Thursday than launching pop bottles a couple hundred feet? Using only cardboard, tape, some water and a bicycle pump, attendees at the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society’s program on July 2 did just that. The evening started off by looking over the supplies the attendees had in front of them. Minus the tape, everything was a recyclable that had been collected leading up to the event. After being told some tips on how to get their rocket to be as aerodynamic as possible, and being shown some rocket designs that were already made, everyone took to it. The goal was simple: to take one complete pop bottle, add a nose cone with some weight to the front, and some fins to the back. With the supplies and a little ingenuity, their designs quickly took shape. Although they were all given the same instructions and materials, not a single rocket looked the same. Once completed, the rockets were taken outside to be launched. Some plastic piping served as the launcher, and with the addition of water to each of the bottles, they were good to go! Everyone who made a rocket then took a turn holding theirs in place while another person used a bicycle pump to pressurize the bottle. Once released, the bottles would take off to the cheering and applause of those watching, all the while soaking whoever had been holding it. Some went sky high, while others were intended for distance. Regardless of how they launched, every rocket was fun to see fly. Those in attendance had a great time. Whether they were launching their own rocket, or simply cheering on another, it was a funfilled evening for everyone. The topic for the CWSS’s next program at the Stoney Creek Centre at 7 p.m. July 16 is Demystifying Bats. The July 23 presentation at the Stoney Creek Centre (also at 7 p.m.) is entitled Mushrooms with Martin.

Saskatoon pie contest returns for sixth year By Murray Green
It’s time to find your grandmother’s favourite saskatoon pie recipe to share with others. The sixth annual Battle River Watershed Alliance Saskatoon Pie Contest will be held on Saturday, July 25 during the Camrose and District Farmers’ Market at the Duggan Mall. David Samm, along with other guest judges, will be sampling the pies to determine a winner. Everyone will be able to sample the pies after the judges. “Bring your pie to the Farmers’ Market between 9 and 10 a.m. on Saturday (judging begins at 10 a.m.). You could win fabulous prizes,” said Susanna Bruneau, policy research coordinator at Battle River Watershed Alliance. “There are some rules to follow, so we encourage everyone to view those before they start baking. For example, it has to be homemade crust,” said Bruneau. “We will have other judges from the community. We have an award for the best pie based on the judges decision and a People’s Choice award. The general public will be invited to sample the pies and judge for themselves who they think has the best pie.” Last year, 18 pies were entered to set the record. “Coincidently, the winner baked pies for our Watershed Festival,” said Bruneau. “People had the
opportunity to sample the award winning pie at the festival in August. We hope to have the winner bake pies for the festival again.” If someone would like to enter the contest, but is unable to attend the event on July 25, he or she can drop off the pie the day before at the Battle River Watershed Alliance office. “We have access to some fridges, so we can store them and bring them with us to the market for judging. We will have a booth at the market during the contest,” said Bruneau. Most people love saskatoons, so they enjoy eating samples. “People are asking if the saskatoons will be ready in time (because of less moisture this year) and they should be, just not as large as in other years,” Bruneau said. For more information on the rules of the contest, visit the Saskatoon Pie Contest event on the Battle River Watershed Alliance Facebook page, visit website www.battleriverwatershed. ca/pie-contest, or phone 780-672-0276. Saskatoon berries were selected as the prime ingredient because they can easily be found across the prairies and at many u-pick berry farms. The annual Watershed Festival is slated for Saturday, Aug. 22 at Miquelon Lake Provincial Park.

One of the most difficult times for anyone is when a loved one is dying or at risk of death. The demands of caring for a gravely ill family member can jeopardize both employment and financial security. The Government of Canada believes that during such times Canadians should not have to choose between keeping their job and caring for their family. Compassionate care benefits, provided through the Employment Insurance (EI) program, are available to individuals temporarily away from work to care for a sick family member with a significant risk of death. Our Conservative government is increasing the financial support for individuals taking care of family members facing a significant risk of death Effective Jan. 3, 2016, Economic Action Plan (EAP) 2015 will invest up to an additional $37 million annually to extend the duration of compassionate care benefits from the current six weeks to six months. The benefits can also be taken within an expanded period of 52 weeks (up from 26 weeks) and can be shared between family members. Estimates suggest that up to 6,900 claimants per year could benefit from this enhanced measure. The enhancements being made to compassionate care benefits through EAP 2015 reaffirms our government’s commitment to helping families receive the support they need as they care for loved ones across Canada and here in Crowfoot. Eligibility for compassionate care benefits remains the same, including the requirement for a medical certificate signed by a doctor attesting to the family member’s condition. Self-employed Canadians can apply for EI special benefits if they are registered for access to the EI program. This builds on our government’s record of past legislation, such as the Helping Families in Need Act which allows parents to suspend the payment of their EI parental benefits if they become ill or are injured, and collect EI sickness benefits. This allows additional flexibility to claimants in receipt of EI compassionate care benefits or EI benefits for parents of critically ill children to convert to their EI sickness benefits if they become ill or are injured. They may resume collecting the balance of their parental benefits thereafter, if needed. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Canadian families. The changes we are making through Economic Action Plan 2015 will ensure that families are able to care for their loved ones. Through these enhancements, the government is ensuring that the EI program continues to help Canadians when they need it most. CPL contributing to social health of the city By Dan Jensen
Camrose Public Library is making major contributions to the social health of the city. CPL director Deb Cryderman told Committee of the Whole Council June 15 that in addition to being a social gathering place for people (especially those who cannot afford public spaces or cultural events with a price tag attached), the library provides after school programming for those who cannot afford after school child care, supports newcomers to Canada by helping them negotiate the endless paperwork they face and easing their integration into the community, teaches early literacy skills to our youngest citizens, acts as a conduit to information for learning, growing and becoming better citizens, and provides employment. Cryderman noted that the library has many healthy partnerships,
including one with Augustana university. “We support up to 40 students per semester with community service work experience,” she said. Cryderman expressed appreciation to the City for continuing to support free library cards for Camrose residents. “Those free cards have broken a barrier to access and we see a steady increase in city library card holders,” she said. “In fact, on April 22 we had 6,910 card holders, or 906 more card holders than we did in 2012, the year library cards first became free to Camrose citizens.” Cryderman encouraged council to follow the lead of Edmonton Public Library and make library cards free for life. “Perhaps that’s a thought Camrose would like to entertain in the next couple of years,” she said. “We beat them to free library
cards and to the book bike, so now we can be second in the province with free for life cards.” As of May 31 of this year, the library had invigilated 184 exams, had 7,432 people access the internet on its computers, had 10,118 use its wi-fi, had 7,053 people attend programs that were offered, had lent 91,000 items, and had seen more than 40,000 visitors. “With your support,” said Cryderman, “we will be able to continue to provide these valuable library services to all residents of Camrose and the surrounding area.” The library held a book bike launch party on June 25. Regional system Parkland Regional Library director Ron Sheppard told council at the meeting that in 2014, PRL had 659,305 items in the system catalogue (including 6,686 eBooks, 14,872 eAu-
dibooks and 12,262 large print books), made 191,733 inter-library loans, and circulated 1,210,346 items throughout the system. Sheppard said one of the biggest challenges for libraries in the Parkland system is finding volunteers. “In rural areas it is very hard to get people to take responsibility for libraries. In the smaller places it seems the same five or 10 people volunteer on every community committee there is, including library boards.” Sheppard explained that the PRL communications plan for 2015-16 includes making connections with municipal councillors and administrators to create stronger partnerships. “We want to communicate more effectively with councillors and administrators,” he said. “We have found that many councils don’t always know what
their own appointed library board is up to. You (Camrose council) get a lot of support from library staff and they keep you well informed, but that is not so in many small places, so we are trying to figure out what we can do as a regional library system to help those local library boards communicate more effectively with their councils.” Sheppard said PRL conducted a marketing campaign in 2014 to promote eLibrary services. “While we were successful in promoting new electronic resources we didn’t see the spike in library cardholders that we were wanting.” Sheppard said 14 per cent of the people in the Parkland region were library card holders in 2014. To increase memberships by five per cent, Parkland would have to attract over 10,000 residents to libraries in the region.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson
Canada Day had special meaning for Peters, Bueckert
The benefits of failure
So why would an incredibly successful author like J. K. Rowling, British author of the Harry Potter series, choose to speak about “The Fringe Benefits of Failure” to a Harvard graduating class? When a little book called Very Good Lives by J. K. Rowling caught my eye, I was surprised to read the sub-title: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination. I was introduced to J. K. Rowling by my then nineyear-old granddaughter Kate. She raved about a book featuring Harry Potter. I was intrigued because it was the first time I was aware of Kate liking a book that didn’t have a horse in it. Being a diligent grandma, I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (first in the series) and was hooked. I continued to read Books Two, Three and Four as they were published, but then fell off the wagon. Two summers ago, as one of my delicious summer indulgences, I re-read Book Four and continued on to read the rest of the seven books in the series. Harry Potter books have sold over 450 million copies worldwide, been translated into 77 languages, and turned into eight blockbuster films. I’d call that a success. ***
We know about J. K. Rowling’s phenomenal success, but there’s a back story. In her commencement speech to Harvard graduates, she described something of her life as she was writing the books. Rowling told the Harvard graduates that just a few short years after she graduated from university, “I think it is fair to say that by any conventional measure, I had failed on an epic scale.” A short-lived marriage had imploded, she was unemployed, a single parent, and “as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain without being homeless.” All the fears her parents had for her (including that with her quirky imagination she would never get a stable job and would live in poverty), and the fears she had for herself, had come to pass. As she said, “…by every usual standard I was the biggest failure I knew.” In her speech, Rowling did not glorify the years of struggle that came after that. So why did she talk about the benefits of failure? Here’s what she said: “Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena where I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea.” Rowling says that failure gave her an inner security she had never before experienced, and taught her things about herself she could not have learned any other way. She also found she had friends whose value was priceless. She says: “You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more than any qualification I’ve ever earned.” ***
When I think back to the most difficult times in my life, I would echo J. K. Rowling’s assessment. I learned I was a survivor, and had strengths that surprised me. Surviving things I feared caused the fears to lose their power. With gratitude and humility, I learned the amazing strength of relationships with family and friends. I would prefer not to re-live the tough times of failure – but I am eternally grateful to have the benefits they made possible. And having said all of that, frankly I still hope not to fail any more! *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an e-mail to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com

Helen Peters, left, and Anna Bueckert, right, had assistance preparing for their citizenship tests from Camrose Adult Read and Write Program coordinator Arlene Simmons.
By Dan Jensen
The Canada Day celebrations on July 1 had extra special meaning for two local women. Helen Peters, of Camrose, received her Canadian citizenship in a ceremony at Edmonton Public Library April 20. Anna Bueckert, of New Norway, received hers at the same location June 10. “It means a lot for me and my family,” said Helen. “My husband and all three of my children had their Canadian citizenship and I was jealous.” The Canadian citizenship status makes Anna feel more at home. “I have the same rights now as the others in my family,” she said. “There are a lot fewer things for me to worry about.” Helen and Anna took their citizenship tests after completing citizenship classes led by Camrose Adult Read and Write Program coordinator Arlene Simmons in which they learned about the history of Canada and is diverse culture. “Rather than having them memorize the parts of the textbook I led them through discussions about Canada so that when they went to take the test they would have the necessary background,” explained Simmons. “That way if they didn’t know the answers they would at least been able to make an educated guess.” Both Anna and Helen admitted to being nervous before writing their tests. “There was a lot of studying to do, which was hard to do when you have three little ones around,” said Anna. “I wasn’t sure if I would pass it or not.” Helen found some of the questions on the test to be difficult. “I didn’t feel very confident with how I did even though I had been taking classes for three years,” she said. “I was thankful that I had such a good teacher.” Anna, who is the daughter of dairy farmers, came to Canada from Chihuahua, Mexico, in the northern part in 2006, two days after she and her husband married.
“My husband had worked here part-time (during seeding and harvest) before we wed and found that it would be easier for us to make a living here than in Mexico,” she said. While everyone was welcoming, it took her a while to get used to the cold weather. “We arrived in February in a snowstorm,” she said. “Snow was not anything I had ever seen before.” Anna and her family usually try to do something special to celebrate Canada’s birthday. “We won’t be able to attend them this year because we will be in Mexico, but we usually go to the activities and take in the fireworks,” she said. Helen came to Canada in 2006, also from a dairy farm near Chihuahua. “We came by airplane to Vancouver and then drove through the mountains in the middle of August. “I was so impressed when I saw the snow on top of the mountains. I also liked seeing the big ponds that were at the side of the roads.” She was here for just two months when she gave birth to the youngest of her three children. In spite of living just 45 minutes away from her in Mexico, Helen didn’t meet Anna until she moved here. “The people here were very welcoming when I arrived,” she said. “They made me feel as if I had been living here all my life.” Helen and her family normally celebrate Canada Day by having a special meal and taking in the fireworks. “Canada Day has always been special to me,” she said. “It is a day to relax with the family.” Anna and Helen are relieved that as Canadians they won’t have any more troubles crossing the border. “When we went through the United States it was always me who was holding things up by having to produce all the extra paper work,” said Anna. “I am thankful that I don’t have to do that anymore.”

Jessie Bona Hall (Berke)
PURPLE MARTIN FESTIVAL
Dan Olofson, second from left, explains the migration of the purple martin birds and how they end up in the Camrose area every year at the Purple Martin Festival. Five geolocators from last year’s deployment were located. A study using radio-frequency identifier units will count the number of times birds go in and out of their house. A group will be deploying geolocators at Duggan Pond on July 18.
Jessie Bona Hall (Berke) was born on September 12, 1927 near Kelsey and passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital on June 16, 2015 at the age of 87 years. She was the eighth of 11 children born to Herman and Myrtle Berke, arriving a few minutes after her identical twin sister Bessie. She grew up on a farm near Kelsey. On October 28, 1950, she married Irvin Hall. They settled near Edberg and to this union, eight children were born. Mom was kept very busy growing a large garden, canning fruit and vegetables, and sewing clothes for her large family. She also drove the grain truck for Dad during harvest and worked alongside him pail-feeding 3,000 chickens and gathering and cleaning eggs. She was active in the community, belonging to the ELCW, Royal Purple, teaching Sunday School and driving her children to their various sporting events and 4-H meetings. Mom and Dad were fortunate enough to travel, some highlights being Australia, Hawaii and going on an Alaskan cruise. They retired in 1976 and moved to Camrose. Mom began quilting and also joined a bridge group. They purchased a winter home in Mesa, Arizona. We all looked forward to the homemade lemonade that she made from the lemon trees on their property. Mom loved to dance, sing, cook, bake and sew and was great at all these activities. She had a great sense of humor and a ready smile. Relatives, friends and neighbours were always welcomed and she always had a cup of coffee ready along with some sweets to eat. She leaves to mourn her seven children Sandra Brandt, Rod (Kathy), Gloria (Doug) Lundstrom, Janice (Dave) Rakoz, Dennis (Angie), Kevin, Sharon (Doug) Peter; 18 grandchildren; 22 grandchildren; and brother Randal Berke. She was predeceased by her husband Irvin; son Trevor; son-in-law Ernie Brandt; greatgrandchild Noah Stephen; parents Herman and Myrtle Berke; brothers Lloyd, Howard, Bernard and Victor; and sisters Ellen Ingles, Vida Innes, Lois Brockhoff, Hazel Dingman and Bessie Hall. Rest in peace, Mom. We will miss you dearly. Join us as we gather and share memories of our mom at Edberg Community Hall on July 25, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Your comfort and support are greatly appreciated. Memorial contributions are greatly appreciated to Edberg Cemetery Fund or the charity of one’s choice.

Mickey Allen Orr September 8, 1960 – July 6, 2015 Mickey Allen Orr was born in Camrose, AB on September 8, 1960, the eldest son to Gordon and Merna Orr. He spent the first five years of his life living on the Orr family farm in Rosalind. At age five, the family moved to a farm near Donalda. Mickey attended school in Donalda and Stettler, after which he worked in the oilfield service industry until his health declined. Mickey was a very hard worker and was very well respected in the industry. Mick was a loyal Oilers fan and also enjoyed golfing, fishing and camping. Mickey’s final years were ones of declining health. He purchased a home and moved from Stettler to Camrose to be closer to family. Mickey showed immense courage and resilience throughout this time. His pain and suffering finally ended on July 6, 2015 when he passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 54. Mickey was predeceased by his father, Gordon Orr. Lee G. Schultz
July 31, 1944 – July 5, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear brother, uncle and friend. Gerald was born on July 31, 1944, the youngest child and only son of proud parents, John and Adele. Gerry was little brother to five sisters, Lydia McAllister (Bill), Adaline Adolf (Ernie), Doris Lyseng (Norman) Doreen Graham (Myron) and Lorene Adolf (Edwin); 17 nieces and nephews; and extended family. Gerry was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth in infancy and Adeline; three brothers in-law Ernie, Bill and Edwin. May we all share the memories. Gerry loved golf, travel and his many get-togethers with family and friends. He was interested in the history of the area. Having a keen memory, he could tell who and what was where 50 years ago and broached no argument ’cause he was right! …and usually was.

Camrose Spirals attending competition in Paris By Dan Jensen
Camrose Spirals Jonathan Naslund, Jodi Harrison, Myles Bogstie, Tashina Bogstie and Taytem Syrnyk will be competing in a world skipping event in Paris, France, from July 21 to 27. “Myles will be competing as an individual in the masters events, while the rest will be competing as a team (Camrose Synergy) in the 18 to 25 age category,” said Camrose Spirals coach Beth Jarrett. The competition is not one for which the Camrose Spirals had to qualify. “Anyone can go as long as they have a certain level of skill,” said Jarrett. “Basically all you have to do is register.” The competition will provide the opportunity for the Spirals to watch and draw inspiration from the world’s best skippers, some of whom are also gymnasts and dancers. “The idea is to go for the experience,” said Jarrett.
Camrose Synergy team members, left to right, Jon Naslund, Tashina Bogstie, Taytem Syrnyk, Jodi Harrison and Myles Bogstie. Bogstie will be competing in the masters events while the others will be competing as a team.
Cultural component The Spirals won’t be spending all their time at the competition venue. “We’ve obtained passes that will allow us to explore parts of Paris and experience the culture,” said Jar-
rett. “We are also going to be going to Barcelona, Spain, after the event is over to tour and look around.” Community support The Camrose Spirals have been able to defray expenses for the trip thanks
to the generous assistance of the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Royal Purple in defraying expenses of the trip. “Our applications (for funding) have focused on
how much our senior members have contributed to the community with their mentorship of the younger skippers who come through the program,” said Jarrett. “Destiny Reay, who is an executive member of Rotary Daybreak, was very familiar with our club because of the work she has done with us as a personal trainer.” The team expressed its appreciation to the Royal Purple by doing a skipping demonstration. Personal funds The team members will be paying for the majority of the costs out of their own pocket. “They went into this venture planning to pay their own way and have been working and saving over the course of the past year,” said Jarrett. “They have been so busy that getting them into the gym for practices has at times proven to be a really big challenge.”
MacWilliam ready for the next challenge By Murray Green Jillian MacWilliam of Hay Lakes looks forward to the summer so she can spend more time on the ice and attend another Team Alberta hockey camp. She is focused on having an excellent Summer Selection Camp in Camrose on July 14 to 19 and getting back to the top of her game. “Last year was rough because I was recovering from mono, but I still continued to play hockey. It helped because I still continued to play better. This year we will have a more experienced team,” said Jillian, who played for the Sherwood Park midget club. “I couldn’t go to school, so I had to do my modules at home and be home schooled. I’m taking some summer classes to better my marks and get ready for Grade 12.” She didn’t have as far to catch up in hockey. Jillian has attended summer camps the last two years and the coaches know what she brings to the ice. “I like to contribute on offence and score points. I really developed last year with new coach Dan Auchenberg. He helped me improve so much,” she said. “Assistant coaches Dayna (Janzen) and Julia (Sharun) also helped me. Our trainer has us working out twice a week and it really helped me add muscle and get stronger. This is going to be a big year for me and I want to be ready.” Jillian scored eight
Target Photography Jillian MacWillliam, who is described as a gritty, hard working, in-your-face type of player with skill is attending a Team Alberta Selection Camp in Camrose this week. Team Alberta will compete at either the National Women’s Under-18 Hockey Championship, of the Canada Winter Games. Team Alberta will be selected for the National Under-18 Championship in Huntsville, Ontario, Nov. 4 to 8.
goals and added 10 assists for 18 points in 32 games as she fought to regain her form. “She is a gritty, hard working in-your-face type of player, but with skill. She can hurt you in many ways, the player you hate to play against,” said Auchenburg. She fully recovered for the playoffs with seven points in three games and
was second in team scoring. “It’s not all about the points. I want to be more of a leader this year,” she said. The team went to the Mac’s Tournament, which was one of the team’s goals. “Having the camp in Camrose and on familiar ice, is an advantage for me. Honestly, it feels like home. I love playing there and it’s in my comfort zone still,”
she said. “They push our comfort zone by making us stay in dorms and not being able to go home, but the rink is still home.” After the spring camp, 46 athletes are invited to attend the Team Alberta Program U18 Provincial Summer Selection Camp. Players participate in high intensity on and off-ice training, as well as classroom sessions and fitness testing. After the provincial camp, a few number of players are identified to continue through a fall training camp and scouting process. The fall camp will include on- and off-ice sessions, and some exhibition games. Then the Team Alberta coaching staff will announce the final 20-player roster. “I want to make Team Alberta and then focus on taking baby steps. I want to get my grades up, because I really want to play for an Ivy league team. I know it will be a lot of work, but I want to push myself,” said the former Camrose Minor Hockey player. Team Alberta will compete at either the National Women’s Under-18 Hockey Championship, or the Canada Winter Games. The National Women’s U18 Championship includes a combination of provincial and regional teams: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario Red and Blue, Quebec and Team Atlantic. That event is usually held in November of non-Canada Winter Games years.
Team Alberta will be selected for the National Women’s Under 18 Championship in Huntsville, Ontario, Nov. 4 to 8. Canada Winter Games are held every four years, with the next Games set for Red Deer in 2019. To prepare for camp Jillian played in a three on three tournament, plays shinny hockey once a week and trains in the gym. “I take any ice time I can get because being on skates is still the best practice. I’m still on the ice, so I’ll be ready when the camp starts,” she said. “This year I want to focus on playing well in every game.” The last two years, Jillian has played with the Sherwood Park Fury midget triple-A. Jillian joins Taylor Kezama of Camrose at the camp. “It’s nice to go to a camp with some familiar faces. I have some friends on the Fury that are going to the camp as well,” she said. Taylor played for the St Frances Xavier U19 private prep school team in Edmonton in the last two years. Jillian and Taylor have both been with the hockey Alberta development program since 2012. Kathryn Gotaas and Anna Purschke of Sherwood Park will be attending the camp as well. Kathryn’s brother, Cam, plays for Camrose Kodiaks and she has family ties to Camrose. Anna also has extended family in Camrose and both play with Jillian on the Sherwood Park Fury.

2015 Ford F-150 Better than ever before
Dan Madison By Dan Jensen
The 2015 Ford F-150 at Lamb Ford Sales in Camrose has the highest EPAestimated fuel economy ratings of any full-size gasoline pickup on the market. When equipped with the available 2.7 litre EcoBoost engine the new Ford F-150 4x2 has estimated 14.9 litres per 100 km city, 10.9 litres per 100 km highway and 12.8 litres per 100 km combined fuel economy ratings. Two smaller turbochargers, instead of one large one, pump air quickly into the combustion chambers, generating a virtually instantaneous surge of ondemand power. The flex-fuel 3.5L TiVCT V6 is engineered to handle demanding everyday jobs while keeping operating costs as low as possible. It has a five per cent higher power-to-weight ratio than the previous 3.7 litre V6 and can tow up to 3,447 kg, a 408 kg improvement. The 3.5 litre EcoBoost delivers 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Direct injection technology draws optimum power from every drop of fuel, while twin air-to-air intercooled turbochargers provide the surge of on-demand power when you need it. The proven, durable 5.0
litre V8 has 385 horsepower and 387 lb.-ft. of torque, which has improved from the 2014 model year. This engine has a 16 per cent higher power-to-weight ratio than before. The engine was built with twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) technology. With conventional valve cam timing, the intake and exhaust valves have to open and close at a fixed point, compromising performance. But Ti-VCT virtually eliminates this compromise. Variable control of valve cam timing optimizes performance across the entire low, mid and high ranges of the power band to match the driving conditions, all the while burning fuel with impressive efficiency. The standard electronic six-speed close-ratio transmission has a wide gear ratio for responsive low-end performance and enhanced fuel efficiency at the higher gears. The selectable tow/ haul mode improves performance when towing or hauling heavy loads. It compensates for grade and load and reduces gear hunting to improve on power delivery. Engine braking also helps slow the truck when descending hills. The available SelectShift® automatic has two modes of operation: Pro-
gressive Range Select lets you limit the range of gears to lock out overdrive for consistent speed over hills and mountain ranges. With Full Manual mode, you can go all the way up and down the gearbox, staying fully in control. Lighter
The new Ford F-150 is lighter by up to 317 kg thanks to the use of military grade aluminum that is the same high-strength grade used in the aerospace industry. Aluminum is resistant to dents and corrosion and its scrap can be reclaimed and sent back into the manufacturing process to minimize waste. The new fully boxed frame is made of more highstrength steel (more than 70 per cent at 70,000 psi) and larger cross sections than the previous frame. And while stronger and more rigid, this frame is lighter because many of the components are fabricated using the state-of-the-art roll-forming process that minimizes weight. Ford torture-tested the F-150 in labs, over highaltitude passes and through desert valleys, while hauling huge loads and towing heavy trailers at temperatures from -29 to 49 degrees Celsius. Ford also put F-150s in
the hands of people in heavy industries such as mining and construction who really know how to take a pickup to the extremes of durability. The cab redefined
The F-150 cab was redefined to help you work smarter and more productively. One hundred and 70 degree swing-out rear doors on SuperCab make for easier entry and exit, loading and unloading. The fully flat load floor has more under-seat storage space than ever – now in both the SuperCab and SuperCrew®. The new power sliding rear window is a seamless piece of glass with a power sliding centre section that seals tightly when closed and allows for the use of the defroster even when open The beltline of the doors was lowered by up to two inches and the front pillars were moved forward to improve visibility. The available classexclusive 360° camera with split-view display and dynamic hitch assist uses four cameras – one in the grille, tailgate, and under each of the sideview mirrors. The system enables you to see all sides of the truck and surrounding area by stitching the imag-
es together and displaying them on a centre stack screen. It’s helpful when manoeuvring in tight parking spaces, job sites and trails. The dynamic hitch assist feature provides a line-of-sight guide in an instrument panel display to help direct your hitch ball to the trailer receiver. The new available LCD productivity screen on the instrument cluster (part of SYNC® with MyFord Touch®) provides updated information from fuel efficiency to towing tips. You can create a customized “MyView” home screen to access your most frequently used screens in one place. The menu includes gauge setup, trip computer, fuel consumption, and towing/ off-road applications. The productivity screen is standard in F-150 Lariat, King Ranch® and Platinum. A 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen is optional in F-150 XL and standard in XLT. The F-150 has lots of places to store the assortment of things you carry inside the cab – plus nearly twice the front storage space than before. You can see the 2015 Ford F-150 at Lamb Ford Sales, 3771-48 Avenue, Camrose. Phone 780-672-2411 and ask for one of the friendly sales professionals.

By Murray Green Tim Levitt has always loved vehicles. Six years ago he seized the opportunity to purchase a 1972 Chevrolet Malibu. “I purchased it restored. I work on vehicles all the time, so I wanted something that I could just jump into and drive and enjoy,” said Tim. “I just keep it up as I go along.” The mechanic has always had a soft spot for Malibus. “For one, it’s affordable and two, I’ve always been a Chevy guy. I pretty much like all vehicles, but it just happened that it popped up. It had everything I was looking for and it was in my price range.” The fact that it was a muscle car classic didn’t hurt. “You know I was looking for something with a lot of pep. It is more of a cruiser. I would like to race, but I just bought it for cruising,” explained Tim. “I wanted to go to cruises and enjoy the camaraderie of it. I wanted something to talk to other people about at shows and it has been great. I bought it for $17,000 and it was appraised for $25,000. I actually am due for an appraisal for insurance purposes. “My son and I like to go to car shows and it gives us a chance to do things together and enjoy it. That’s what we do in the summer. When I was younger, I always liked the Camero and Malibu. I had a Monte Carlo SS and a 1979 Malibu, so when this one came available, I grabbed it. It caught my eye and I went to Calgary to get it. The car was pretty much done. I put a more sporty steering wheel on it and some minor things.” This year’s edition of the Camrose Cruisers Show ‘N Shine is on Main Street from noon to 5 p.m. on July 18. A cruise will follow at 6 p.m. and the evening will conclude with a drive-in movie at dusk. It will be at the Recreation Centre.
Team Alberta holds hockey selection camps
By Murray Green
The selection for Team Alberta U16 hockey starts in Camrose from July 7 to 12. Brennan Davis and Damon Zimmer of Camrose are two of 80 players participating in the U16 camp that develops and identifies the athletes who will comprise the Team Alberta roster at the U16 Western Canada Challenge Cup, or the Canada Winter Games. There are 160 athletes identified, with the top 80 invited to attend week long camps such as the Summer Selection Camp, or Elite Development Camp. High intensity on and off-ice training and classroom sessions provide athletes the opportunity to develop their skills within the game of hockey and as people. The U16 program creates an environment where athletes, coaches, trainers and administrators meet to compete with their peers and approach levels of excellence that each has the potential to achieve. The Elite Development Camp will also be in the EnCana Arena from July 21 to 26. The Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup is from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1 in Calgary.
Camrose defenceman Taylor Kezama, Hay Lakes forward Jillian MacWilliam and Kathryn Gotaas, sister of Cam Gotaas of the Camrose Kodiaks, will also be skating at the arena this month. From the Spring Selection Camp, 46 athletes are invited to attend the Team Alberta Program U18 Provincial Summer Selection Camp July 14 to 19. Players participate in high intensity on and off-ice training as well as classroom sessions and fitness testing. The Team Alberta coaching staff will announce the final 20-player roster after the camp. Team Alberta will compete at either the National Women’s Under-18 Hockey Championship, or the Canada Winter Games. Armena celebrates 100th anniversary A CENTURY COMMUNITY
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Top left: the Domes (Lomnes) family made a new entrance
sign for the community that was unveiled on July 11. From left to right, Cheryl Domes (nee Lomnes), Camrose County Reeve Don Gregorwich, MLA Wes Taylor, Chandra Domes with Max, Wayne Domes and Jill Domes. Below: a future farmer hauls his animals in a wagon in the parade. Left below: Reeve Gregorwich and Camrose County entered the parade with its award winning float.
By Bennie Lomnes, From Footprints along the Stoney, a history of Armena and Baldenstein areas
Armena and area celebrated 100 years at the Armena Recreation Grounds on Saturday, July 11. The earliest settlers in the Armena area were certainly isolated as far as the outside world was concerned. All supplies and mail were hauled by team and wagon or sleighs from Wetaskiwin, the nearest railway point. This meant a three or four days journey, with kind settlers along the way supplying food and shelter for both man and beast. These trips were usually taken in turns by neighbours, who would become the postman as well as the purchaser of supplies for much of the community. Sharing was really a way of life and very necessary. After its establishment in 1905, Camrose became the post office and trading centre. This was a great improvement for the settlers as a trip to Camrose and return could be done in one day. When the Canadian Northern Railway was built through the Stoney Creek watershed in 1911, a siding was laid out on the SW 12-48-21, a siding without a name. This siding lay within the Thordenskjold School District but Thordenskjold as a name for the hamlet everyone expected to be built here was thought unsuitable for two reasons. Firstly, for anyone but a Scandinavian, Thordenskjold was hard to pronounce, and secondly, the
word was very difficult to spell. It is said (how authentic this is I don’t know) that a letter was sent to the provincial government asking for a name for the siding. Others say it was the railway company that was contacted. Whoever it was suggested the name Armena and that’s the name it has had ever since. Armena is a village which was erected on the CNR (Canadian Northern Railway) in 1915. At that time it was part of L.I.D. No. 45, which was formed December 23, 1912, by an order in council. On March 1, 1918, it became M.D. No. 457 (Lloyd George). It merged with M.D. Melrose No. 426 an part of M.D. Parkland No. 456 to become M.D. Camrose No. 427. This merger took place on December 6, 1943, under the authority of a ministerial order. The area was renumbered in April, 1945 to become M.D. Camrose No. 53, and there were alterations of boundaries in April, 1948, January, 1952, December, 1954, January, 1955, and April, 1955. It became County of Camrose No. 22 in January, 1955. (Courtesy of Provincial Archives). In 1915 a store was built here by Mr. Carter. He named it “The Armena General Store.” It was located west of the store built later by John Walker. Mr. Carter shortly after that was given the Post Office, a great boon to the area. During the next seven years this business changed hands several times, being owned by Ted Walkameyer, Alfred Anderson and H.H. Gurly. It was
during Mr. Gurly’s ownership that the store was totally destroyed by fire. The following account was written by John Walker, who in 1922 had married Mabel Henrickson. “After our marriage, Mabel and I went to Ferintosh to run a store for K.W. Tanner. We had been there about a year when our folks, from Armena, came to Ferintosh to see if we would be interested in building a store in Armena as there hadn’t been one since the fire in 1922. With the help of Knut Lyseng we decided to embark on the new venture. We found out that by going to Millet we could get lumber (shiplap, etc.) for, I believe, $20 for 1,000 feet. When the neighbours heard this they got together and offered to take teams of horses and help me haul the lumber from there. We had four or five teams. “That year everything looked like a bumper crop as wheat stood five feet high in places. But one night, the night of the hailstorm, everything was lost from Big Hay Lake through Armena and Dinant and on for a strip two to three miles wide. The fields looked as if they had been cultivated. Almost all windows facing to the west were broken. This was not a very good outlook for starting a new business. “I made a deal with Ed Henrickson that on good days I would help him try to get together some feed from what was left of his crop and on other days he would help me build. That’s how
the store was built. When we came to the shingling, the whole neighbourhood came to help and we were done in one day. “We opened the store for business in September of 1923. We were given a Post Office and received mail daily by CNR trains. Things started to move along. “As time went on we made a living with the store but we found it to our advantage to take on other small duties. I bought a heavy safe from Martin Lyseng and became paymaster for the elevator companies, United Grain Growers, Searle and Alberta Pool. This was also the beginning of radio and we had an Atwater Kent radio with a horn speaker and a wire outside for an aerial. I got the job of taking the grain prices broadcast, every day at noon, from Calgary. For this we received, from each grain elevator, 75 cents to a dollar per month. I also became Commissioner of Oaths. “When we opened the store we purchased gasoline and coal-oil by the barrel and sold it a gallon at a time, measured out with a tin measure. As time went on we purchased a regular gas pump with an underground storage tank. As tractors were taking the place of horses, we opened a British American bulk station, selling and delivering grease and fuel oil by the barrel. We received one cent per gallon as our commission at that time.” After 23 years in business, John Walker sold his
store, in 1946, to Gordon Rud and moved to Vancouver. Vernon Lyseng and Raymond Skaret were the next buyers. They sold out in March, 1948, to the Grue brothers, who in turn sold to Maynard Moe in July, 1949. Mr. Moe sold the store to Raynold Throndson and Richard Skaret and Raymond continued to operate the business until it closed in 1979. Grain companies, United Grain Growers in 1914, Searle in 1927, and Alberta Wheat Pool in 1928, built elevators, as well as houses for their grain buyers in Armena. In the early 1930s, when the Armena Lutheran Parish, comprised of the Scandia, St. Joseph and Bethlehem congregations, was formed, a parsonage was provided in Armena. Rev. Selmer Rude was the first parish pastor. After fire destroyed the Scandia Church in 1956, the new church building was constructed right in Armena rather than on the former country site. A new centralized school was also built in the hamlet in 1941. Armena was well established as a central point for large gatherings. Church and community picnics were held during the summers. In the early years, Armena district residents were active in various sports and for many years had good baseball teams. According to some reports, the first baseball practice was held in Armena about 1919. The Jasmans, Roths, and Bennie Olstad come to mind a some of the early team members.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM
Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. The UDF program will begin July 9, 2015, starting with Zone A and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Emma Knapik at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca.

Ten University of Alberta students and two Augustana Campus professors finished their course on Chinese economics and politics with a whirlwind three-week tour of China. Dr. Jérôme Melançon and Dr. Varghese Manaloor led their AUECO 356/ AUPOL 356 student from ALES and nine students from the Augustana Campus to Zhuhai and Beijing. In Zhuhai, located in Guangdong province beside Macau and across from Hong Kong, they spent time with students and faculty from United International College, Augustana’s sister institution, a like-minded liberal arts university. In addition to lectures and activities on campus, highlights of their visit included a visit to the Communist Party School, the HighTech Development Zone and some of its factories, and the newly created Free Trade Zone pilot project. As a result, they had the opportunity to discover the origins of some of the products “made in China” over the last three decades. The group also had the chance to visit cultural and historical sites in Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Macau, Guangzhou, and all the highlights in Beijing. Through this immersion, the lectures they received from their professors, and the informal seminars in which they took part, they were able to learn how to build on their experiences to further their understanding of economic development and of political change, and to develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary China.

Excellent quality built bi-level
By Murray Green
The Camrose Axemen scored three runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Sturgeon Paladins 4-1 on July 8. The win was the second in as many nights as Camrose hammered the St. Albert Cardinals 17-5 on July 7 to run its North Central Alberta Baseball League winning streak to 10 games. Camrose made the most of its five hits to score the four runs. Dylan Borman led the way with two hits including a double. Riley Guntrip, Kris Kushnerick and Joe Pasychnyk all added timely singles in the win. The story was on the mound for Camrose. Three pitchers combined for a three hitter. Blair Mulder had a quality start with four innings, allowing one run on two hits and three walks, while striking out five batters. Braedon Majeski tossed two innings allowing just one hit. Kyle Muzechka garnered the save with one inning of work and recorded a strikeout. Against St. Albert, Mulder, Guntrip and Ryan Petryshyn all collected four hits, while Jordan Riopel chipped in with three. Mulder connected for a homer as Camrose smashed the Cardinals’ pitching for 24 hits. Pasychnyk pitched four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out two batters to record the win on the mound. Paul Ofrim, Muzechka and Bryan Toles each tossed one inning in relief to secure the victory. The next Axemen home game is on Tuesday, July 14 against the Edmonton Athletics, starting at 7:15 p.m. Camrose hosts a doubleheader against the Westlock Lions on July 19. Action for the home doubleheader on Sunday begins at 1:30 p.m. The final home game is slated for Aug. 12 against the Stony Plain Mets at 7 p.m.
