The weather so far this summer, while not the ideal answer for gardens or crops, has been tailor made for tourism. And, traffic is up in Camrose if ridership numbers for The Mirror Lake Express can be viewed as supporting evidence. The unique train runs a continuous twelve minute loop along the south side of Mirror Lake every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 pm to 8 pm (including evening of July 30th, the day of the Big Valley Jamboree parade). It is an inexpensive, enjoyable and memorable experience for all ages. In addition to the scheduled weekly run, the popular Camrose attraction, thanks to tremendous volunteer spirit, appears throughout the province over the summer at numerous fair and festival parades. Last week it was a hit in Red Deer and Edmonton. On August 7 and 8 it will provide exposure for our community in Hanna and Morin. Don’t miss a unique opportunity on July 28 and August 25, the annual Toot, Scoop and Savour evening. You get a train ride plus a scoop of Olleo’s ice-cream and a piece of Lefse House pie all for the low price of $5.00. The Mirror Lake Express will also be offering rides at Founders Day on August 15th and at the Kodiaks’ Home Opener game in September.

Highway roundabout construction underway By Murray Green
Construction of a roundabout at the junction of Highways 21 and 13 started July 16. Since the construction would have a major impact on traffic during the July 30 to Aug. 2 Big Valley Jamboree and cause considerable delays, Alberta Transportation is delaying the detour. “I am happy to report that the detour at the intersection of Highway 13 and 21 will not go into effect until after the Big Valley Jamboree. Work at the intersection should not be a factor,” said Tina Stewart, from communications in Alberta Transportation. Motorists will be rerouted to an on site detour as crews proceed with work. Weather permitting, the roundabout construction is expected to be completed on approximately Oct. 12. Speed limits through the detour will be reduced to 50 km/h. Driving lanes will be 3.7 metres wide with a single metre shoulder. Flag persons will be present as

required through construction. Alberta Transportation reminds drivers that they are to obey all flag persons, signs and signals. Fines for speeding are doubled in construction zones. The total cost of the roundabout is expected to be just under $5 million. The roundabout was designed by Al-Terra engineering. Studies conducted in the United States show that roundabouts reduce collisions of all types by
40 per cent, reduce injury collisions by 75 per cent, and reduce fatal and incapacitating collisions by 90 per cent. Roundabouts are smaller than traffic circles and larger than traffic calming circles. A study in 2009 indicated that Highways 13 and 21 traffic safety would improve if the traffic signals that are currently in place were replaced with roundabouts. A study done by EBA Engineering Consultants in 2006 on the safety per-
formance and operation of the Highways 13 and 21 intersection indicated that, in 2004, the average annual daily traffic on Highway 13 was 8,150 vehicles per day east of the intersection and 2,450 vehicles per day south of the intersection. The study also showed that over 44 per cent of west bound vehicles turned north from Hwy 13 onto Hwy 21, that over 37 per cent of westbound vehicles continued west on Hwy 13, that over 92 per cent of
eastbound vehicles continued east on Hwy 13, that over 63 per cent of north bound vehicles turned east from Hwy 21 onto Hwy 13, and that 78 per cent of southbound vehicles turn east from Hwy 21 onto 13. The roundabout was one of three approved by the former provincial government in the March 26 budget. The others are at Hwy 2A and Hwy 597 near Blackfalds, and at the junction of Highways 23 and 519 northwest of Lethbridge.
Residents will be given a say on ski jump By Dan Jensen
City council will be seeking input from the residents of Camrose before making a decision on what to do with the Camrose Ski Jump at its regular meeting on Aug. 10. “I think it is very important that we have some public consultation on this,” said councillor Bill Sears at a Committee of the Whole council meeting July 13. “I think at the very minimum an open house, probably at the Stoney Creek Centre, where people can look out at it and say here is what we would not like to see or here is what we would like to see. I don’t think we want to just make a motion and say we are going to bring it down or not bring it down right now because it is a very emotional issue to a lot of people in the city.” The Camrose parks department has obtained an estimate showing the cost of removing and replacing the ski jump’s wood decking, applying a new coat of paint and erecting framing and cladding to be approximately $108,500. The estimated cost of demolishing the ski jump and removing the piles to about 24 inches below the ground surface is $16,500. “These quotes were obtained just shy of a year ago, so they may change a little bit,” said Camrose Com-
The ski jump was built for the Alberta Winter Games.
munity Services general manager Ryan Poole. “They are also just rough estimates.” Community Services has received mixed feedback from the Camrose Ski Club on the ski jump. “They have a few of their more senior members who would like to see it stay or would highly prefer to see it stay, and then they have some members who would actually prefer it gone because it is a bit of a hazard, it is in their
way, and they could use the site when they are having events and so on,” said Poole. Emails Camrose residents have jumped on the opportunity to email Community Services and share their thoughts on the jump. “I had six come across my desk today saying that for aesthetic reasons they would like to see the existing structure taken down and poten-
tially replaced with some other monument or something,” said Poole. True costs Councillor Max Lindstrand agreed with the need to obtain public feedback. “I don’t think we know (how the community feels about it),” said Lindstrand. Lindstrand said he has spoken with Camrose’s Mr. Ski, Garry Gibson, and Clarence Servold, both of whom are interested in keeping the jump as a historic community icon. “They both indicated that when that ski jump was done in 1988 that it was done to last 100 years and that the estimate of the cost to demolish it might be on the low side based on the amount of concrete in the ground holding it up. I think we would need a little more complete information than someone guessing that it might be able to be taken down for $16,500.” Poole told council that the City would not need to remove all the cement piles that are in the ground. “The individual who gave the estimate (for removal of the jump) did say that he recognized that it was built like a fortress, so you would basically have to just take the cement down a foot into the ground rather than try to dig up all the piles,” he said. (We could) take it down a little ways, cut it off and then you
would re-landscape on top, leaving the fortress base still in place. That was part of the estimate and that is why they figured they could do it for that price.” Poole noted that the City has $50,000 in the budget this year that could be spent on the ski jump. Camrose museum Camrose and District Centennial Museum has been having a successful summer. “We don’t keep track of the exact numbers, but (they) have been up,” said Poole. “We were able to get a few groups in there before the school year ended and we had a great turnout for the Canada Day festivities that were in the general vicinity.” Poole noted that the museum coordinator, Janine Carroll, is in the process of putting together a proposal to keep the museum open on a part-time basis through the winter months for school group usage and once or twice a month for the public. The museum is currently trying to pay off the amount that is owing to the Canada Revenue Agency. “(The museum society) is looking forward to paying that off, so they can apply for grants,” said Poole. “As long as they are owing money to the revenue agency they can’t apply for grants.”

Cargill celebrates opening of processing facility By Dan Jensen
Cargill Ltd. Canada celebrated the opening of its new state-of-the-art canola processing facility located south and east of Camrose July 15. “This is a very exciting time both here in Camrose but maybe more importantly for Canadians in the agriculture industry,” said Cargill Canada president Jeff Vassart before bringing out the scissors for the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony. “It is special for us to be celebrating the opening of this at the same time as Cargill globally is celebrating its 150th year as an organization.” Vassart expressed appreciation to Camrose and area producers for their support of Cargill over the last 40 years. “Your support is what gives us the confidence that we will be successful with this investment that we are making,” he said. “We know that you have a lot of choices out there and we are going to continue to work hard to be your partner of choice for many more years to come.” The new crushing plant is one of 22 facilities Cargill operates across the province with a little more than 3,000 employees. A Cargill grain handling facility is located nine km southeast of Camrose, while an animal nutrition facility operates west of the city at the junction of Highways 13 and 21. Cargill sees the new processing facility as another opportunity to help feed the world. “The demand for what we produce in Canada is very strong,” said Vassart. “We are fortunate that we have some of the most innovative farmers around the world. That results in a situation where over two thirds of the agricultural and food products that we produce in Canada are exported to different countries around the world.” Vassart promised that Cargill will continue to build new facilities, provide producers with the products and services that they need to be more successful, and make heavy investments in the people who are working on its teams. “This is a people business,” he said. “People deal with people and so we want to make sure we continue to invest in having the most knowledgeable people out on your farms to help you make the choices you need to make.” The new canola processing facility opened for deliveries near the end of May this year after nearly three years of construction. “I liken starting a facility like this to getting that
Cutting a ribbon to officially open Cargill’s state-of-the-art canola processing facility on July 15 were, left to right, Cargill corporate vice-president Wayne Teddy, assistant vice-president Ken Stone, president Jeff Vassart and grains and oilseeds supply chain business unit leader Roger Watchorn.
Up and running By Dan Jensen
After 24 months of construction, the canola processing plant is up and running. Cargill Ltd. started receiving canola seed from farmers in mid-May. “We are just in the final stages of commissioning and making sure that everything is operating the way we would like it to operate,” said Cargill Canada president Jeff Vassart. “The goal is to have everything ready to roll for the harvest season that will be upon us here in the next month.” The new plant will have the capacity to process more than one million tonnes of canola per year. “It is going to give us the opportunity to work with a lot of local producers that we have had a relationship with for many years through our export facilities, as well as a lot of new farmers who maybe haven’t traditionally worked with Cargill in the past,” said Vassart. Cargill looked at several locations before choosing Camrose as a site for the plant. “One of the reasons we chose the Camrose area,” said Vassart, “is that the farmers here consistently produce high quality canola in the quantities that we need to run a facility like this.” Cargill is pleased with the partnerships it has been able to develop in Camrose and area over the last 40 years. “We have developed a great working relationship with the county, the city and the province,” said Vassart. “They have been absolutely great to work with to bring to fruition a project like this that has a lot of complexities. We are very appreciative of the support they have given us. They have been very helpful.”
first new piece of equipment on the farm,” said Vassart. “It takes a while to figure out some of the kinks and get it operating completely the way you want it to and we are going through exactly that at this point in time. We are working out some of the kinks and do appreciate your business as we do that. We look forward to further discussions on the ideas that you have on how we can improve the level of service we can offer.” Cargill grains and oilseeds supply chain business unit leader Roger Watchorn told producers and community business leaders that Cargill is committed to being a strong corporate citizen. “I really hope that people are seeing that as we build this plant and get
involved in the community,” he said. Watchorn said the investment that Cargill is making with the new facility is something everyone should be proud of and excited about. “The canola industry has a noble purpose in helping feed the world. The world needs what Canada does and what north central Alberta does and it is going to need it much more over the next 15 to 20 years.” Watchorn thanked the Cargill operations people who have been working on the facility since 2012. “They have been working hard now for a little over three years to make today a reality and get this plant started,” he said. “It feels in some ways that we have hit the finish line but this is just the start and we have
big expectations. We want to make sure that we say thank you to our employees, our people who have been getting us to where we are today. It goes with a lot of personal sacrifice and that doesn’t go unnoticed.” Ed Lange, who is part of a five family co-operative farm north of Camrose, said the new facility will help reduce the cost of getting the canola to market. “If there is an opportunity to have another plant within miles of us, as producers we are at a huge advantage. We are privileged to have it here.” Lange noted that the new plant will provide jobs for family and more money for community projects and education. “Big industry has an impact on the community and Cargill is a good exam-
ple (of that impact),” he said. “Over time they have been a very positive industry from what I have seen, and I thank them for that.” Cargill presented cheques for $2,500 to the Battle River Watershed Alliance and the Camrose Neighbor Aid Center program. The new plant will have the capacity to process up to 3,500 tonnes per day of canola seed. The initial annual crush volume is expected to be approximately 850,000 tonnes. The finished products will include approximately 1,500 tonnes per day of food grade canola oil and 2,000 tonnes per day of canola meal animal feed. The construction of the plant involved approximately 800,000 man hours of employment.

REFLECTIONS by Bonnie Hutchinson Just Imagine! I’m still thinking about the little book Very Good Lives, which contains the commencement speech that J. K. Rowling gave to Harvard graduates. Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter series and she said, “As you stand on the threshold of what is sometimes called ‘real life,’ I want to extol the crucial importance of imagination.” I expected she might talk about how imagination enabled her to create her series of books filled with wizards and magic. She did begin by saying, “Though I personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp…” But then she went to a much broader place. Imagination is the uniquely human ability to envision things that do not exist. Imagination is therefore the source of all invention and innovation. But Rowling focussed on one aspect of imagination that I had never connected. “In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, [imagination] is the power that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared.” Imagination makes empathy possible. I’d never thought of that.
Higher postal rates proposed By Murray Green
It could cost Canadians more to mail a letter in 2016. Canada Post is proposing to increase postage rates to make up for the loss of revenue caused by declining mail volumes. The corporation would increase the cost of stamps purchased in a booklet, coil or pane for items weighing 30 grams or less from the current 85 cents to 90. The price of a single stamp would remain at $1. The rate change would be launched on Jan. 11, 2016 and replace rates that have been in effect for only 21 months. Letters (regular mail) volumes have been declining for nine years. In 2014, Canada Post delivered 1.4
billion fewer pieces of domestic letters than in the peak year of 2006. Some of the biggest declines have occurred this year. While mail volumes have decreased, the number of addresses served has increased, which has affected Canada Post’s bottom line. Canada Post is trying to maintain services and avoid becoming a drain on taxpayers. It believes the new postage rates will help achieve its mandate of being financially self-sufficient. Canada Post estimates the average Canadian household purchases fewer than two stamps a month, while the typical small business purchases fewer than 250 stamps per year. Canadians can avoid the
cost increase by purchasing permanent stamps at the current rate of $0.85 in advance of the proposed rate changes coming into effect. Permanent stamps with the letter “P” on them always retain their value and are valid postage regardless of when they were purchased. The post office is also proposing to increase rates for other domestic mail, international letter items and domestic registered mail. The rate change is one of several actions Canada Post is taking to achieve financial self-sufficiency. In December 2013, Canada Post announced its Five-point Action Plan to transform its business and preserve postal service for all Canadians.
Where it began
In her early twenties, Rowling worked at the African research department of Amnesty International’s headquarters in London. In her little office she read letters and notes and testimony of people who had been tortured because they criticized their government, people who sent pictures of family members who had disappeared without a trace, people who risked their lives to inform the outside world of what was happening inside their countries. Visitors to the office came to give information or try to find out what had happened to people they left behind. Many of her co-workers had been political prisoners or forced to flee because they dared to speak against their governments. Every day, Rowling saw evidence of cruelty and evil that some will inflict on their fellow humans to gain or maintain power. She began to have nightmares about some of the things she saw, heard and read. And yet… “And yet,” she said, “I also learned more about human goodness at Amnesty International than I had ever known before.” Thousands of people who have never been tortured or imprisoned for their beliefs act on behalf of those who have. Rowling says, “The power of human empathy leading to collective action saves lives and frees prisoners. Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know and will never meet.” Being part of this was one of the most humbling and inspiring experiences of Rowling’s life. “Unlike any other creature on this planet, human beings can learn and understand without having experienced. They can think themselves into other people’s places.” Use it
Rowling said she was going to extol the crucial importance of imagination, and connected it to empathy, the ability to imagine or “think ourselves into” another person’s experience. She didn’t just extol. She also exhorted us to use that power. She said, “If you choose to use your status and influence to raise your voice on behalf of those who have no voice; if you choose to identify not only with the powerful but with the powerless; if you retain the ability to imagine yourself into the lives of those who do not have your advantages, then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence but thousands and millions of people whose reality you have helped change.” My favourite quote
Her conclusion: “We do not need magic to transform our world; we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” This week, “the power to imagine better” is my mantra of the week. Arm your children against disease Alberta Health Services (AHS) is encouraging parents to learn more about arming their children against disease. Immuniz ealb er t a .c a — a website developed for Alberta parents, together with Alberta parents — was launched last September and has already provided more than 118,900 people with information and support, as they consider immunization for their children. With answers just a few clicks away, this website simplifies the search for credible immunization information in the crowded online environment. “We know parents have questions and that’s more than Okay: it’s healthy,” said Dr. Gerry Predy, senior medical officer of Health with AHS. “You want to keep your children safe and so do we. That’s why we’ve taken your common questions, concerns and information requests, and put together a simple website that you can trust.”
Since its launch, immunizealberta.ca has remained a go-to information source for questions about vaccine safety, immunization and immunity, and has also seen many visits related to emerging topics and events. “We’re pleased to see the activity on the site mirror the information needs of Albertans,” said Dr. Predy. “When we declared a pertussis outbreak in AHS Central Zone in December, the pertussis pages on immunizealberta. ca were the top pages visited for three weeks straight. Similarly, in late January and through February, when the measles outbreak in the U.S., including Disneyland, was a hot topic, pages about measles and getting immunized before spring travel were the top ranked.” In addition to helping parents find information they need, the website has also proven valuable for public health nurses, who are on the front line interact-
ing with parents at routine appointments. The feedback from both parents and these health care providers continues to influence the website content. “Front-line providers have told us that the Common Questions pages on the website are incredibly valuable and, for some questions that they hear more than others, they expressed interest in printable versions of those questions and answers,” said Dr. Predy. “As of today, we’ve added the printable Q&A option to the top eight questions on the site now, and more printable options will continue to be added.” Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.

Tony Hladun, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Camrose, presented Sheralyn Dobos, Family Violence Action Society director, with a donation of $3,300 to bring the one-person play “Routes” to Camrose for students of Camrose Composite High School, Our Lady of Mount Pleasant and Charlie Killam School. Routes tells the story of Tom, a 15-year-old Edmonton boy who rides the bus, rather than go home and face his dysfunctional family. While he rides, he reflects on his tenuous relationships with his former best friend, Leonard, his alcoholic father and a man who was killed by three teenagers on that very bus line a short time before.

The Camrose Composite High School Grade 9 Concert Band was recognized with several awards for its showing at the Alberta Band Association Festival of Bands. In addition to receiving an overall rating of “Superior” (the equivalent of “Gold”), the group was awarded a second honour, an “Adjudicator’s Choice” award. While this festival is a non-competitive event, the Alberta Band Association occasionally recognizes select groups which, in the eyes of the adjudication panel, are deserving of special mention. The Grade 9 band was one of nine bands out of a field of over 150 junior and senior high school bands which performed at the festival.

Have a special story about Camrose Main Street that is just begging to be told? The Tale of a Town Canada would love to hear it. A nationwide theatre and media initiative that aims to capture the collective memory of Canada’s main streets one story at a time, The Tale of a Town Canada will be in Camrose July 23 and 24 with its “Storymobile” (a travel trailer turned mobile recording studio) collecting oral histories through interviews with independent business owners, local heroes, community stakeholders and neighbourhood residents. The Camrose Historic Main Street Society will serve as The Tale of the Town host. “We are looking forward to participating
in the story telling that will be collected,” commented Camrose Historic Main Street Society coordinator Janet Hatch. Stories that are gathered in Camrose (as well as other cities and towns across the country) will be digitally mapped and added to The Tale of the Town Canada story portal at www.thetaleofatown.com, and become part of a podcast series d istr ibuted th rough The Walrus Magazine online. T he national venture will culminate in a multi-platform celebration of the country’s main street culture, in commemoration of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2017. Future looks promising for two Camrose families By Dan Jensen
Habitat for Humanity has given a “hand up” to two more Camrose families. “With the completion of homes 27 and 28 we are assisting two families with the realization of a bright and promising future,” explained Habitat for Humanity Camrose board president Tamara Saby during a Habitat home dedication ceremony at 7014- and 7016-50 Avenue July 3. Habitat’s mission is to engage volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promote home ownership as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty. “What that means in a nutshell is that we build homes with volunteers and community partners and then we sell those homes to hard working families at fair market value but at a payment they can afford,” said Habitat for Humanity Camrose executive director Cody McCarroll. “The zero per cent interest mortgage we provide gives families a chance at home ownership which (then) becomes a stable platform for change that they can use to make a lasting difference in their lives.” McCarroll expressed thanks to everyone who was involved with the 2015 build, whether as a volunteer or as a donor. “If you gave your money,
Christina Davidson and her son, Kaden, accepted the keys to their new Habitat for Humanity home from WetaskiwinCamrose MLA Bruce Hinkley.
your time, your talents to Habitat we really appreciate it,” he said. “We could not have done it without you.” Habitat for Humanity Camrose home ownership applicants must provide information about their income level, debt and credit rating, as well as how long they have lived in Camrose. “We go by the CNIT, which is the Canadian Net Income Table,” said family services committee chair Pat Johnston. “If your income falls within the $30,000 to $44,000 range you may qualify for a Habitat home.” In lieu of a down payment, Habitat families volunteer at the build site,
ReStore or volunteer organizations throughout Camrose. “An expectation of home ownership with Habitat is that you are willing to volunteer 500 hours,” said Johnston. Habitat for Humanity Camrose has the first right of refusal if the owner, within 20 years, decides to sell the home. Major donors for the Habitat for Humanity Camrose build include the Government of Alberta, City of Camrose, UFA and Habitat for Humanity Canada. “The Government of Alberta is one of the proud donors to the Habitat program,” said Wetaskiwin-
Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley, who presented the keys to Christina Davidson and her son, Kaden. “You look at the brochure and see all the benefits that it has for the family. One of the key things for me is the stable community that home ownership can bring. We have bricks, mortar, drywall, all that kind of stuff, but in a home, if you have a happy family it doesn’t really matter if it is a shack or $1 million mansion. The fact is homes bring families together and create happiness.” Mayor Norm Mayer, who, presented the keys to Jomer and Angel Garcia and their children, Noah and David, said the City of Camrose is pleased to be make home ownership possible through Habitat. “The number of homes that have been developed so far speaks for itself in regards to the acceptance and the need for this type of accommodation in our community.” Habitat for Humanity faith relations committee chair Signi Bruner gave thanks to God for the wisdom that has built the homes and the caring people who have contributed money, time, energy and materials, and asked for a blessing on everyone who lives inside. Brenda Murdock read a statement from a member of
the CCHS leadership group who was involved in the building of the new Habitat homes. “The opportunity to help at the Habitat for Humanity build site was an exciting opportunity when we decided to make it one of our club’s projects. I never thought, however, it would be a more miraculous experience than I even expected. I went to the build expecting to help my community and I was excited to make even a small difference. Much to my surprise from learning to side a house to pounding nails, I learned much more from going to the build than I ever imagined. Normally when we think of helping other people it sounds like a lot of work. This did not seem to be the case with this project. Throughout the morning we were able to learn a ton and had a blast. And we made a difference at the same time.” Saby said Habitat for Humanity is not just building safe and affordable homes, but building stronger supportive and inclusive communities. She thanked the financial donors and volunteers for helping with the Habitat mission of giving families a hand up by providing decent homes at affordable prices.
Habitat gives a hand up to Garcias and Davidsons By Dan Jensen
Jomer and Angel Garcia and their sons Noah and David and Christina Davidson and her son Kaden received the keys to their new Habitat for Humanity homes July 3. “This is a new beginning and a dream come true,” said Christina, who works at Camrose Regional Exhibition. “To be able to work towards owning a home is something I never thought I ever be able to afford to do.” Jomer said owning a Habitat for Humanity home means a better future for his children. “When we were in our apartment we were always impacted by the rental costs. Every time the rent went up we would have to make adjustments to our budget. We are so thankful that Habitat was able to help us.” Christina and Kaden were living in a small, low income apartment when Christina made the decision to apply to become a Habitat for Humanity home owner. “I had an amazing feeling when I dropped my application off,” said the five-year Camrose resident. “I was very confident that I
Angel and Jomer Garcia and their children, Noah and David, accepted the keys to their new Habitat for Humanity home from Camrose mayor Norm Mayer.
would be able to get into a home this year.” Jomer and Angel were having a hard time finding a decent place to live when a friend suggested they look into partnering with Habitat. “We were a little unsure about it at first but we decided to give it a go and apparently we were approved,” said Jomer. “We made the application online and about a week
later received a call from the Habitat people asking if they could visit us. They told us what Habitat is all about and they explained everything really well.” The family was surprised and overwhelmed when informed it had been accepted. “There aren’t that many people who have the privilege of getting into a Habitat for Humanity home or approved for it, so yeah,
we were very happy about that,” said Jomer. The Davidsons and Garcias are well on their way to completing the 500 hours of volunteer labour or “sweat equity” that Habitat for Humanity requires from its partner families as part of the down payment on their new homes. “They are coming and I am almost there,” said Christina. “We still have about 75 hours to go.”
Jomer, who is employed by Meridian Manufacturing, and Angel, who is employed by Bethany, see the “sweat equity” requirement as a way to become more familiar with the needs of the community. “There are a lot of volunteer opportunities in Camrose and so many different ways to get involved,” said Jomer. Christina describes Habitat for Humanity Camrose as an outstanding organization made up of amazing people. “The people who are involved (with Habitat) have amazing hearts,” she said. “Working alongside them has opened up something new inside of me and created a desire to do even more as a volunteer.” Jomer expressed appreciation to everyone who was involved in the construction of the Garcia home. “Watching the home being built by hardworking volunteers who were driven by caring and loving hearts to me was just overwhelming,” he said. “We owe a lot to this great community of Camrose.”

Legion recognition
THE OLD TIN CUP I remember the old tin cup. It hung on a hook over Grandma’s kitchen sink. It was a battered old 8-ounce measuring cup that had seen many years of loving use as she prepared countless meals for family gatherings. Now dented enough to distort a true measurement (and while most things in the kitchen Grandma did more by instinct and experience, her carpenter husband taught her the importance of true measurements), it now hung over the sink useful only as a drinking cup. This old tin cup was the family drinking cup. Grandma would have been too frugal to use paper cups even if they had been available. Her logic was that it seemed silly to dirty drinking glasses just for family. Grandma and Grandpa, their children, their children’s spouses, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins, and aunts and uncles would all take cooling drinks of water from that wonderful old tin cup. Grandma entertained many others besides the family in her home, and they were always offered a clean glass from which to drink. It did not take long, even as children, to recognize the difference between guests and family. All were treated with love and respect. All were made to feel welcome. All received great hospitality and (if they were really lucky) the best chicken and dumplings ever made on earth. But there was always that one significant distinction. Only family got to use that old tin cup. Family were the most special. Family shared in ways that guests could not. Family were not afraid of the openness and trust that comes from family ties. No ugly germ would come between family; family was stronger than germ warfare. That old tin cup outlived many beloved family members, but it could not and did not outlive the family. That family would today be described as the “nuclear family” referencing how each person’s life revolved around the importance of the family unit. In that strength, we were tougher than any nuclear weapon or any microscopic germ. That old tin cup is now long gone, and no one in the family seems to know where it went. Many of the previous users are also gone. I got nostalgic over that old tin cup at our last family reunion, and maybe a bit nostalgic over the old way of family life. I enjoyed that nostalgia, that remembering, and that sharing very much. I am home now and can live with the memories and the pictures of that reunion, even as I anticipate the next one. On the other hand, I think I will go and try to find and buy a tin measuring cup. No one may drink out of it in the hygiene conscious reality of today, but just seeing it might help, it the midst of the dizzying hurry of today’s life, to focus my attention on my family.

Paterson Grain building terminal near Daysland By Murray Green
Paterson Grain will be constructing a new train loading facility near Daysland. The $25 million terminal is expected to begin accepting grain (mostly wheat and canola) late summer in 2016. “Flagstaff County is excited to receive the news. Agriculture is a valued industry in our area and any development which supports this industry is an exciting opportunity,” said Reeve Gerald Kuefler, after hearing the news. “We look forward to working with Paterson Grain, as they proceed to obtain a development permit and welcome this family-owned agri-business.” The new unit train loading facility, Paterson Grain’s third Inland Export Terminal in Alberta, will incorporate the most modern grain handling and storage concepts. The facility could provide between 15 to 20 full-time jobs. With storage capacity of over 55,000 metric tonnes, the new facility will utilize a highly efficient loop track system, which has become a customary feature in Paterson’s newest grain terminals. As the first in the industry to utilize the loop track design, Paterson has been able to minimize train loading times, setting a new industry benchmark at its two loop track sites. The new facility will also feature a dual receiving area, allowing for efficient truck unloading. These features are expected to result in quick turnaround times for offfarm deliveries. The efficient truck handling capability combined with highly efficient rail car loading will allow Paterson to offer excellent customer service, even during the busy harvest season. Paterson GlobalFoods is one of Canada’s oldest and most distinguished familyowned agri-businesses. Founded 107 years ago in 1908 by a young Manitoba grain trader named Norman Paterson, the company has grown into a global organization that sources, sells and ships high-quality agricultural commodities and food products to over 118 countries around the world. Paterson has other terminals in Dunmore and Gleichen in Alberta. It is also planning a build in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan.

Augustana hosts biathlon training camp By Murray Green
Holding a biathlon camp in July at the University of Alberta Augustana campus may seem premature to some people. But, for coach Lowell Niven it is an opportunity to get a jump on next year’s season. “Although biathlon is typically a winter sport, the spring and summer months present great opportunities to train and teach,” said Niven earlier in the spring. He uses roller skiing, cross-country running and mountain biking as a summer alternative to cross-country skiing on snow. Camrose is an ideal location for the camp with more than 11 kilometres of paved roller ski trails, another 25 kilometres of running trails throughout the city and a close by biathlon range. All trails

are accessible directly from Augustana. “The summer biathlon camp has always been a great place for young biathletes to train
and socialize with each other,” added coach Niven. A week long residence camp brought biathletes from across the country
to Camrose for high-performance summer training from July 13 to 17. “While the mountains garner a lot of attention as the focal point for Nor-
dic sports, Camrose has exceptional facilities and we are proud that our Augustana hospitality is always second to none,” said Niven.

Camrose Axemen pitcher Blair Mulder prepares to fire a pitch against the Westlock Lions on July 19 at Harry Andreassen Field at Kin Park. Camrose won the first game of the doubleheader 8-7. Westlock rebounded with a 3-1 score in the second outing to earn a split in North Central Alberta Baseball League action. By Murray Green
The Camrose Axemen won three straight games to garner the Blue Willow Invitational Baseball Tournament at Telus Field in Edmonton on July 10 to 12. Camrose started the weekend by beating the Rocky (Mountain House) Red Dogs 13-7. Pitcher Cornelius Friesen picked up the win for the Axemen on the mound. He gave up nine hits, but all seven runs against him were unearned due to a couple of costly errors. The Axemen returned the same fate on the Red Dogs by scoring five runs on one hit in the second inning. The Axemen blanked the Innisfail Indians 3-0 to advance to the final against the host Edmonton Blue Willow Angels. Dylan Borman tossed five innings of shut out ball with six strikeouts. Camrose scored all three
runs in the first inning in the well played contest. Jordan Riopel hit a double followed by back to back triples by Blair Mulder and Riley Guntrip. Borman helped his own cause by driving in the third run. Camrose edged the historic Blue Willow squad 3-2 in an epic battle for the tournament title. The Blue Willow Angels roster had an amazing resemblance to the Edmonton Blackhawks roster. Kyle Muzechka picked up the win in relief as Camrose scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to garner the victory. Mulder held the Axemen in the game with solid pitching early in the game. A 1-0 score stood until the Angels scored two in the sixth inning. Catcher Dennis Landriault drove in Chance Wheatley for the walk-off win.
Other teams entered in the tourney included the Leduc Milleteers, Provost Combine Pilots, Sturgeon Paladins and Heisler Cardinals. In league play, the Axemen 10-game winning streak was snapped by the Edmonton Athletics, 8-3 on July 14. Camrose still holds the top spot in the North Central Alberta Baseball League with a 10-3 record. The Edmonton Athletics at 9-6, Westlock Red Lions at 8-4 and the Blackhawks at 7-4 currently hold the other playoff spots. Camrose hosts a doubleheader against the Westlock Lions on July 19. Action for the home doubleheader on Sunday begins at 1:30 p.m. at Harry Andreassen Field in Kin Park. The final home game is slated for Aug. 12 against the Stony Plain Mets at 7 p.m.

Catch the western spirit at Camrose museum By Dan Jensen
Camrose and District Centennial Museum is about to host four days of fun activities to help city and county residents explore their western heritage. A Find Babe scavenger hunt from July 22 to 25 will encourage children to search the museum buildings for likenesses of “Babe,” the faithful horse owned by mail carrier Ted Perry that would pull the mail wagon from the CNR station to the post office. “So accustomed did the horse become to his task,” said the history book A Light Into the Past, “that no driver or direction was needed. The horse (Babe) would haul the loaded cart down Main Street and turn of its own volition into the alley on the north side of the post office.” Once they find “Babe” children will be asked to answer a trivia question about the community’s history.
“We’ll be asking them to write their answers down on a form then put it into a draw in the main museum building for the chance to win $50,” said museum coordinator Janine Carroll. A picnic lunch on July 22 will be followed at 2 p.m. by the cutting of a “Babe” cake. Visitors on July 23 will have the opportunity to make a “Babe” type of craft and take turns swiping at a pinata that will be hung from one of the museum’s trees. “We are going to do the pinata game the old fashioned way, with blindfolds and spectators shouting out instructions on which way they should go,” said Carroll. “Each one will be given a certain amount of time.” July 24 will be devoted to old fashioned games like rolling old tires, anti anti-Iover (using the blacksmith shop), and skipping. Sandra McLay will be teaching lessons in the one-room school house.
Activities planned for July 24 include a blacksmith demonstration, crafts (making a sheriff’s hat), photo opportunities with the stage coach and a viewing of the antique tractors. Museum staff have been working hard to create new displays. “We have dug out a few artifacts from our collection for the four days that are not normally shown and made signage so people can see who donated them and what the circumstances were as we know them,” said Carroll. “We will also be showing pictures of early farm days when, instead of using machinery to work the land, farmers used horses.” Staff will be highlighting the theme of the week by dressing in western costumes. “I have a square dance dress that I will be borrowing,” explained Carroll. “We are also going to have kids who will be pretending to live in the pioneer house be students at the school.”

Railway station remembers sacrifices with Victory Garden By Dan Jensen
Throughout the First and Second World Wars Canadians were encouraged to plant war, or “victory” gardens so that the country’s farm produce and preserved foods could be sent to the troops overseas. “In 1917, planting a victory garden was seen as a national duty,” said Glenys Smith, chair of the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park, which will be celebrating the sacrifices of all the military efforts of the soldiers in those two conflicts with the opening of a new Victory Garden its own park grounds at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25. “It was a way for them to contribute to the war effort.” In 1943, the government adopted the slogan “Food will Win the War.” The average produce from the 209,000 Victory Gardens that were planted that year was 500 pounds. The Victory Garden in Camrose (in the Second World War) was located just west of the current railway station. “The row of trees to the west of the station marked its eastern boundary,” said Smith. “It was a community, very large community plot that took up most of an entire block that was tended by many Camrose families. Stu Bailey remembered playing with other children from the community at the site, and everyone helping with the tillage. The plot was a welcome addition during a time of rationing, food shortages and little money.” The idea of the Victory
Camrose Railway Station and Park chair Glenys Smith tends to the plants in the Victory Garden that will be opened July 25.
Gardens was not initially thought of as a good idea by the government. “The government was not so much in favour of it in the early days of the Second World War,” said Smith. “It felt that the gardens would use up too many materials. It wasn’t until the gardens caught on in most communities that it became more accepting of them. A lot of the railway stations during that time changed their station gardens to Victory Gardens to grow vegetables.”
The idea of starting a Victory Garden was proposed by the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park three years ago as a way of remembering an important piece of Canadian history. “We looked around and saw that we had a lot of other gardens, but not any that grew vegetables,” said Smith. After having the City of Camrose parks department under Chris Clarkson strip the sod, the Camrose
Heritage Railway Station approached the Battle River Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of Camrose and several local individuals for assistance with funding that was needed. “Thanks to their support we were able to build a fence that was high enough so the deer couldn’t get in and develop the soil,” said Smith. “Once we had the soil in place we added amendments like crushed leaves and compost and covered it with cardboard and
newspaper so that everything could all be blended together.” As the plan was for the garden to use raised beds, the station needed a few planks of wood. “It is interesting that the wood for the raised gardens came from an old barn at Ted Rawson’s farm,” said Smith. The Battle River Community Foundation has since provided a second donation to fund the creation of a large sign that tells the story of Victory Gardens, as well as four smaller ones that explain the organic gardening methods that are being used for growing. The first crop for the new Victory Garden was better than anyone had ever expected. “It was profuse,” said Smith. “We had enough lettuce and produce that we were able to donate some of it to the Camrose Neighbor Aid Centre food bank. We haven’t had as much success this year, but I think that is the case with all the gardens in the city.” The Victory Garden opening ceremony will include an introduction to the Victory Garden concept, as well as remarks from Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer, Crowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson and a representative from the office of the Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA. The Camrose Railway Station will be serving free home made carrot cake, tea and beverages as a thank you to the people of Camrose.

Sebastien and Heather D’Eschambeault came to Camrose a few years ago with their young family so Sebastien could become an owner and manager of the Brick store. Heather was very content being a stay-at-home Mom with her babies, Sophia, Olivia and Amelia. As the girls got older they no longer needed her full-time attention so she started thinking it might be nice to find a job. She talked with Sebastien. She knew he really enjoyed his job, found it challenging, fulfilling and rewarding in many ways. She thought she would like to learn the business, too. That was nearly two years ago. She started as a part-time sales consultant, which soon became full-time. She really enjoys meeting customers and working with Sebastien; they have an ongoing friendly competition on who can be the better salesperson. A couple of months ago, Heather became a co-owner of the Brick in Camrose. Within 20 months she went from stay-at-home Mom to a co-owner of Camrose’s leading furniture, appliance and electronics store. The biggest challenge for her is balancing home and work. They just bought a new house, they’re raising three energetic daughters and they’re running a dynamic business. “It’s perfect,” she says.

Brenda Gurr, General Manager
Jenn Stone,
Boston Pizza
Sometimes a phone call can change your life. One of those came 26 years ago to Brenda Gurr, who was working as a restaurant supervisor in Calgary. Her brother Kevin needed her to manage the lounge at his Boston Pizza in Camrose. After talking it over with her mom, she packed up her things and headed to Camrose to help out. It’s family, after all. She could always move back to Calgary, which she almost did three months later, but her new friends made her feel welcome, her brother encouraged her to stay and Camrose had a warm vibe, kind of like family. She’s seen a lot of people come and go over those 26 years. Customers who started coming to BP in their teens are now bringing their own children. Employees who were working part-time in high school are raising families of their own. “When I first started Kevin always said he wanted to create a culture of family here,” says Brenda. And that’s just what they have done. Some staffers have been with the Gurrs for 20 years. They stay because it’s like family, with Brenda at the centre, helping them feel welcome.

General Manager The Auto Shoppe The autobody industry is one that typically doesn’t attract a lot of women. It’s a hard world of metal, power tools, loud noise and physical work. Meet Jenn Stone, not your typical autobody shop employee. As general manager of The Auto Shoppe in Camrose, Jenn talks about her work in ways more concerned with customers than the industry norm. “My goal is having customers happy with their repairs and having the least stressful experience possible,” says Jenn with a vivacious smile. “Through today’s media, texting, Facefook, email, we can give daily progress updates to our clients so they know exactly when their vehicle will be ready.” She defines success as building lasting relationships with customers and trade partners. If you’re in need of autobody collision repairs and want someone who puts your needs first, call Jenn at The Auto Shoppe and be prepared for a refreshing change. Wow, now that’s a body shop!

Dynamic duo offers super service
There has been a lot written about the importance of teamwork, about being cooperative, communicating well, collaborating, being part of the solution and not the problem. Geri Ferner and Chris Cameron could have written that book. They don’t have MBA degrees from a business college, but they do have that unmistakable can-do attitude that their customers really appreciate. Fourteen years ago they began working together, managing the operations of Camrose’s original full-service hotel. But they didn’t start out in management roles; they earned them, working their separate ways up through the ranks. They’ve washed dishes, served in the restaurant, dining room, lounge and nightclub; they worked as night managers, each of them learning the skills to become managers. Now, as they talk about their roles at the hotel, there’s a natural, easy friendliness between them gained over the years, over the hundreds of banquets they’ve coordinated, the staffing schedules, the training, the supervising, and, of course, the thousands of conversations they’ve
Geri Ferner
had with customers, some of whom come into the hotel three times a day. They both agree their favorite part of the job is working with their customers. It’s what drew them to the hospitality business in the first place. Geri started 26 years ago, fresh out of high school, working in the nightclub. Several years later, she was night manager and then manager. Chris followed a similar path. She began working part-time in the nightclub while attending Augustana and liked the work so much, she decided she had found a career in hospitality. Now they work in the same office at desks that face each other. Sometimes they finish each other’s sentences. Sometimes they laugh at exactly the same time. They share a similar sense of humor. They’re committed to excellent customer service. They enjoy the diversity each workday brings, the many different people Chris they encounter and the situations which Cameron arise. If you’re ready to start planning an event and want it to run as smoothly as possible, give Chris or Geri a call today. They will respond as one.

CDSS programs are making a difference By Dan Jensen
Camrose and District Support Services programs made a big difference in the lives of parents, children, youth and seniors in 2014. One hundred per cent of 131 Boys and Girls Club members aged six to 12 reported feeling safer and 96 per cent reported feeling more connected with others as a result of participating in the Kid Way after school program. One hundred per cent of 18 OSCAR parents reported that OSCAR’s safe and caring environment helped their children develop inter-personal competencies like empathy, sensitivity and friendship. One hundred per cent of 46 Pre-School parents reported that it helped their children develop key assets, including commit-
ment to learning (trying new things), service to others (playing well with peers), responsibility (carrying out simple tasks or following direction), and self-regulation. One hundred per cent of 71 Family Violence Action Society clients reported learning effective communication skills, with 90 per cent practicing healthy strategies to manage stress. In addition, 90 per cent of 50 group participants reported gaining a better understanding of how they can contribute to healthy relationships. One hundred per cent of 37 Home Support/ Meals on Wheels clients reported an enhanced capacity to meet or have their needs met. All but one said they felt a greater sense of independence because of the program. One hundred per cent
of 2,152 Service Options for Seniors clients who received assistance completing forms agreed that the program helped them access seniors’ benefits. Most of those who attended SOS presentations learned something new to assist them with their daily living. Seventy-six per cent of 49 Celebrating Seniors’ Day participants reported that the day gave them ideas on how to embrace life with humour and optimism. Eighty-six per cent said they learned ways to enhance their well-being overall. Ninety-three per cent of the 88 people who attended an Elders in Care panel presentation on facility-based services for seniors agreed that they learned about available supports, including more about where to go to get help.
Twenty-three rural volunteers reported that they felt more connected with their community and that they have noticed more people in their communities who are willing to help out. Ninety-four per cent of 129 Family Resource Centre parents reported that the Centre helped to decrease isolation. The same percentage reported an increase in knowledge about their child’s development milestones. Ninety-two per cent reported increased access to parenting resources, with slightly over half agreeing they had benefitted from an increase in Family Supports counselling. Eighty-nine per cent of 115 people who attended a Camrose Family Violence Response Council public presentation agreed that the presenta-
tion helped them become more aware of the impact of family violence in our community. One hundred per cent of the 61 agency representatives who attended training and networking coordinated by the Family Violence Response Council agreed that the training helped them more effectively address family violence. Camrose Family Violence Response Council conducted eighteen workshops on the topics of elder abuse, bullying in sports, sexual violence, youth engagement and healthy/unhealthy relationships. The Rural Community Program director coordinated a men’s conference that had 54 participants. A subsequent focus group launched the Men’s Shed in lieu of a 2015 conference.

Chevy Trax An entry to SUV market
Graeme Davidson By Dan Jensen
The 2015 Chevy Trax at McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC offers versatility, connectivity and turbocharged performance in an efficient package. Sporty and modern, Trax blends small-car agility with the utility of an SUV, including up to 1,371 litres of cargo room. “Trax offers customers another option in the Chevrolet family and will be a strong competitor in the emerging small-SUV market, which is expected to grow more than 80 per cent by 2016,” said McClellan Wheaton Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer principal Will McClellan. A Chevy inside and out
With its signature dual port grille, prominent bowtie emblem and swept headlamps, the Trax is immediately identifiable as a contemporary Chevrolet. Its grille design – with chrome accents – emulates other Chevrolets and provides a more cohesive appearance across the brand’s lineup of crossovers and small cars. Available cues such as front fog lamps and simulated front and rear skid plates
lend a sportier presence, while vertical tail lamps flank the tailgate, accenting taught body lines and pronounced wheel arches that give the Trax a more confident stance. The ten exterior colours are Brilliant Blue Metallic, Orange Rock Metallic, Satin Steel Metallic, White Pearl Tricoat, Black Granite Metallic, Summit White, Silver Ice Metallic, Ruby Red Metallic, Deep Espresso Metallic and Blaze Red. Inside. Traxs’ distinctive styling carries over to a dualcockpit instrument panel. In the centre, it houses a seven-inch high-resolution, full-colour display for the standard MyLink voice-activated infotainment system. It also features displays for available SIRIUSXM satellite radio and standard rearview camera, as well as the available GPS-enabled app navigation system that customers can download. The instrument panel is inspired by the bold design in the Sonic, featuring a large performance-style analogue tachometer combined with a prominent digital display for the speedometer and other readouts. A small-diameter,
thick-rimmed steering wheel enhances the sporty ambience. The wheel is leather wrapped on LTZ and some LT models. LS models feature standard cloth seating with deluxe cloth standard on LT, along with an available cloth/ leatherette seating trim. LTZ models feature standard full leatherette trim. Interior colours are Jet Black Jety Black/Light Titanium, and Jet Black/Brownstone. For versatility, the 60/40 flat-folding rear seat features a fold-down armrest with cup holders, storage in all four doors, four bins in the dash, pockets in the seatbacks and bins under the rear load floor and in a hidden storage drawer under the front passenger seat. It also offers 540 litres of storage behind the split-foldingrear seat and 1,371 litres with the rear seat folded. The front passenger seat also folds flat to extend the cargo length and accommodate items up to eight feet long. Connectivity
Available Siri Eyes Free for iPhone iOS 6 and iOS 7 users enhances connectivity and convenience. Each enables voice-controlled con-
nectivity so customers can keep phones stored and their hands on the wheel. Additional standard and/or available features include a diagonal colour touch screen and additional USB ports, Chevrolet connected by OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi, next-generation OnStar and MyLink, SIRIUSXM Satellite Radio (with three months of trial service), and playback of MP3 files stored on USB flash memory drive. With Chevrolet’s connected by OnStar 4G LLTE connection, Trax provides an available Wi-Fi hotspot that allows passengers to connect multiple personal devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to high speed wireless Internet.
crankshaft centreline, making the entire powertrain unit shorter fore-to-aft. This design enables a shorter overall vehicle length, increased interior space, enhanced safety crush zones, and lower weight. A “steep” first gear and a “tall” overdrive top gear achieve a wide ratio spread of 6:14:1. This allows Trax to achieve robust acceleration as well as fuel efficiency and lower engine noise at highway cruising speeds. The turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility. A solid cast crankshaft and forged connecting rods deliver additional durability to support the engine’s pressurized power and torque.
Trax is powered by a power-dense Ecotec 1.4 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine backed by an efficiency-enhancing six-speed automatic transmission that produces 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm. The transmission has a unique design with the planetary gearsets positioned on the same axis and the engine
Trax isi s built on a robust global platform and engineered with precise suspension tuning to deliver one of the segment’s quietest and most refined driving experiences. The Augustana Miquelon Lake Research Station will be opening on Thursday, Aug. 20. The University of Alberta Augustana facility at Miquelon Lake will be used to promote research, teaching and partnerships within the wider community, including Camrose County and City of Camrose. “The Augustana Miquelon Lake Research Station has a strong interdisciplinary focus, and seeks to support a variety of projects. From the sciences to social science and the arts, we hope to become a hub for researchers and educators in Alberta and beyond,” said research assistant Erin Specht. University staff, students and community partners helped with the new facility to bring it to reality over the past five years. The facility is located northeast of the Miquelon Lake Provincial Park campground. The station includes a lab, sleeping accommodation for eight, washrooms, a kitchen, a meeting room, and storage space for specimens that are collected. The space will be used mainly by researchers from Augustana, but will be offered to others when there is a request. Teaching opportunities for both university and Battle River School Division students will be available. Benefits will include finding rural and local solutions for biodiversity issues, fostering leadership opportunities in students and the formation of community networks. Camrose County gave Augustana $25,000 to help launch the research station project back in 2010. The project then succeeded in getting $75,000 each from Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation and the University of Alberta, as well as CANADA $80,000 in philClient: CHRYSLER Project: JULY 2015 DAA ROC RETAIL NEWSP Some anthropic gifts. Canada standing up to global economic uncertainty
✂
No cash value. Expires on December 31, 2015. Valid at Camrose location only.
Kevin Sorenson, Crowfoot MP
We have been having a good summer so far. It has been wonderful seeing so many constituents at many events in and around our riding, including Canada Day celebrations, the Calgary Stampede, a number of parades, grand openings, and more. As your Member of Parliament, I always encourage everyone to come out and attend these local events as they are always rewarding. Many constituents raise concerns about poor economic reports coming from too many economies around the world: the situation in Greece and its effect on the European economy, the slow recovery of the U.S. economy, and a dramatic economic slowdown in China’s growth, including stock market problems, among other difficulties. China is the largest growing source of new customers for Canada’s exports; the U.S. is our largest customer. While Canada already has substantial trade with numerous locations in Europe, there are hundreds of millions of potential customers there and we are anxious to expand our trade with them. Yet, the difficulties these markets are facing cause a reduction or curtailment in Canada’s ability to sell to these customers. Too often we hear that they cannot currently afford our goods and services and reduce their orders or hesitate before placing new ones. The undeniable fact remains that the global
Kevin Sorenson
economy remains fragile and is impacting Canada’s performance with forces beyond Canada’s borders and control. Now more than ever Canada must continue with our low tax plan. We have a balanced federal budget without builtin or on-going ‘structural’ deficits. We have taxes that are at the lowest level in 50 years – for individuals and businesses. These fiscally responsible policies are serving our nation well in these times of global economic uncertainty. Our country is one of very few economic jurisdictions that do not suffer from internationallysourced credit downgrades. Many foreign politicians, economists and others recognize that “Canada has it right” in terms of working to bolster our economy against negative off-shore effects. Our Conservative government has worked hard
to help create over 1.2 million net new jobs for Canadians that are overwhelmingly full-time, private sector jobs in high-wage industries. We have worked with every sector in Canada’s economy toward preventing ‘investment freezes’ and to realize every bit of economic growth that can be had. It is true, that the International Monetary Fund has slightly reduced Canada’s economic growth rate to 1.5 per cent in 2015 versus their prediction in April of a 2.2 per cent gain for Canada. Compared to the plight being faced by too many nations that we trade with, and the IMF’s predictions for them, the IMF’s latest prediction is not so disappointing. Canada will continue to have economic growth in 2015; Canada’s economy is well placed with the short and mid-term problems from the global economy that continue to impact us; and, we are wellprepared to work for the economic prosperity we will be able to achieve, once our major trading partners can progress from their various current challenges. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780608-4603 or e-mail Kevin. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING PROGRAM
Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. 2. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. 3. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water color. 4. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. The UDF program will begin July 9, 2015, starting with Zone A and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If discoloration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Emma Knapik at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca.

Rintoul dispels some of the myths surrounding bats By Ryley Ca m r o s e Stewardship
Corcoran, Wi ld l i fe Society
For many people, to think of bats is to think of eerie creatures of the night. Some people imagine winged mice out to suck their blood, while others just find them a little too mysterious for their liking. Regardless if they were wary of them to begin with, or loved them already, those who attended the CWSS’s “Demystifying Bats” program left feeling a little more love for these misunderstood critters. This change in attitude was thanks to Jody Rintoul, from the University of Alberta, who presented the event. Jody did her Master’s research on Bats at the University of Regina, and she had a lot of information to share. The evening began with a discussion of myths. Jody was quick to debunk some of the most common ones that a person might hear about these winged mammals. Such myths included the belief that bats are blind and are carriers of rabies. Bats are far from blind, and if we consider their ability to use echolocation, their quality of definition is incredible.
“They can sense something as small as a human hair while in flight,” says Jody. Furthermore, the percentage of bats which carry rabies is very low; less than five per cent. Just like any other wild animal, they shouldn’t be handled carelessly, however they pose no threat that any other wild animal would not already have. Following the discussion of myths, Jody went on to explain their origins and how they fit in around the world. They are remarkable for many reasons. One major reason is the fact that they are the only mammal capable of true flight. Another reason is that they can be found all over the world, fitting in with various roles. Jody gave example of some extreme bats to put the diversity into perspective. On the smaller end of the scale, the bumblebee bat has a wingspan of only five inches and a weight of two grams (less than a penny), while the large flying fox has a wingspan of six feet and a weight of three pounds. From these extremes and everything in between, different bats can be found eating insects, frogs, fish, fruit,

nectar, and even blood. Worldwide, there are 1,100 to 1,300 species, while in Alberta there are only nine. In Alberta we have bats that fit fairly similar roles, which provide a great importance to not only the environment, but the economy. Bats provide a huge assistance to pest control, pollination and seed dispersal. In Alberta, pest control is the most notable. To help put this in perspective, Jody showed a study done in the United States which estimated bats to have an economic value of $74/acre. Across a province so heavy in agriculture, these numbers start to add up in a hurry.
After defining their importance, Jody brought attention to the threats facing bats, specifically white nose syndrome and its devastating impact on bat populations. The fungus, which irritates the skin and disturbs the bats’ hibernation, has a 99 per cent mortality rate. The presentation ended on what we can do to help. This topic included avoiding entering caves in the winter, how to utilize bat houses, and humane ways to remove bats from unwanted locations. For more information on bats, visit batcon.org. The program was intended to include an
evening walk with a bat detector to look for bats in the valley, however due to inclement weather, the walk has been postponed until July 30 at 10 p.m. The walk will be starting at the Stony Creek Centre, and it is a public invitation for anyone to come out. The Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society’s final program, “Mushrooms with Martin” is this week at the Stony Creek Center. Join us at 7 p.m. when Martin Otis from the Alberta Mycological Society comes out to talk about mushrooms from the Camrose area.
